Southern Forester 2013

Forward from the Forestry Club Advisor Dear ASFC Members and 2013 Conclave Participants: What a weekend! I knew hosting Conclave was going to be some work, but I could not have imagined the amount of time involved. Fortunately, the Auburn Forestry Club was up to the task. James Robert Dearman, Russell Agnew, John Lancaster, Ocllo Parks, Nathan Hatch, Trent Williamson, Will Leonard, Dalton Hand, Spencer Thompson, Michael Gunter, Sam Massey, Jonathan Kenney, Zalin Smith… the list goes on but I cannot name them all (sorry if I missed you). A special thanks goes to Fern Graves for pulling all these pictures and results together for our Southern Forester. It was not all just the Forestry Club. We had great support from our faculty, alumni, financial contributors and facility personnel. Teresa Whitman-‐McCall from our communications department was instrumental in the early planning stages and keeping us “legal”. She also played a huge part in advertising and helping us show what a great place Auburn is to live, work and get a degree. Grant Bond, Glen Davis and Larry Pits from our Ag Operations Group helped with much of the groundwork. And many thanks to Bill Batchelor, Dean of Agriculture for allowing us to use their beautiful facilities here on Campus. The technical events came off without any glitches because of the professional way several of our faculty handled the contests, namely Becky Barlow, Robert Tufts, John Kush, Nancy Loewenstein, Dick Martin, Mark Smith, Brian Via, and John Gilbert. We also had some outside assistance from Dan Sitz of Osmose on pole classification and Susan Anderson from the Office of Research Compliance. Many thanks goes to the Dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, Jim Shepard, for giving us the support and me the time to organize such an endeavor. Conclave does not happen without support from industry, both with in-‐kind and financial gifts. Please see the list of supporters on a later page and remember to thank them if you cross their path. Stihl has become a big part of Conclave, and I have to thank Brad Sorgen for putting up with my craziness and helping organize a great event on Friday night. We received many compliments from the “locals” who attended the show, and we were able to raise some more money for Log-‐a-‐Load, which is always a good thing. Lastly, I cannot say enough about all the students who attended. We did not have a single “event” that would cause any concern or pass the “newspaper test”, and for that I am very appreciative. Conclave has truly become an event that we can showcase to the public, and I look forward to attending Virginia Tech and Blacksburg next year and many more after that. War Eagle!!! Tom Gallagher, Faculty Advisor

Letter from the 57th ASFC Conclave Coordinator Dear all current and fellow ASFC members, I would like to thank everyone who was involved or participated in this past years 56th Annual ASFC Conclave at Auburn University. I believe that we had a successful weekend full of competitive, yet safe competition. I want to give a personal shout out to my classmates and faculty advisors within the Forestry Club that made this weekend at Auburn University the best it could be. It would have been impossible for me to coordinate this event alone. From the technical events to the physical events, each school represented themselves in a professional, respectable manner. Congratulations to Auburn winning first place in the technical events. Also, congratulations to Georgia on winning first place in the physical events. It is an honor to be a part of a school and organization under ASFC that represents integrity and pride in the things that we all do. Each team was supportive of each other, and in the end that is what it’s all about. Congratulations on ABAC becoming a part of our association. As we came together and voted your school into the association, we ask that you take the code and honor we all have taken to keep this association reputable as it exists today. We welcome you and hope for the best! Again, I want to thank everyone who was involved in this past year’s conclave. The set up and sponsorship by STIHL was great. All of the money raised through the entire weekend was donated to Log-‐a-‐Load for Kids. Many blessings and wishes to the Children’s Miracle Network. We had many laughs and great memories that will last forever. It was a huge success and I hope that everyone had a wonderful time. Looking forward to next year. See all of you in Blacksburg. War Eagle! Dalton Hand Forestry Conclave Coordinator 2013 Auburn University Forestry Club
