TANGRAM CRISTIANA CASADIO & STEFAN SING (GER)

AURORA NOVA makes a highly anticipated and welcome return to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Set up in 2001 as an alternative venue for international physical theatre. Aurora Nova quickly became a celebrated festival hub, winning many awards for its highly original programme. ‘The venue could always be relied on to showcase work which was not only enormously accomplished artistically, but which was often visually stunning’ The Guardian, 2010. Aurora Nova disappeared from the Fringe in 2008 and was since sorely missed... The energy behind Aurora Nova is now focused on representing a growing roster of international artists and bringing highly artistic yet universally entertaining shows to festivals around the world.

WE after a five year absence! As always, our are excited to be back in Edinburgh -

programme selection stands for outstanding quality and originality but this year, free from the restraints of a single location, the shows can be seen in a number of different venues across the city. United in Aurora Nova’s trademark spirit of artistic solidarity, each company recommends that you also go to see the other shows presented in this brochure. We believe it will become your indispensible pocket guide to the ‘must see’ shows this season! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Wishing you a wonderful festival 2013!

Tangram redraws the boundaries of dance, new circus, and physical theatre in this imaginative and sensuous production. Created in Berlin at the prolific artist-led Katakomben, former ballerina Cristiana Casadio and world class circus performer and juggler Stefan Sing breathe new life into their art forms as they come together to tell a story of love, scorn and above all power. Whether she is hanging from her partner’s fingertips like a marionette or he is shielding himself from objects falling like missiles, the pair explore relationships through tension and beauty. Tangram questions what it is to surrender to love and asks us: Who is in control?

One lets go of everyday life, forgetting it completely. After an hour it is all over, yet the magic of the evening is far from forgotten.

RED BASTARD

HAVE I NO MOUTH

ERIC DAVIS (USA)

BROKENTALKERS (IRE)

Any art worth existing tries to accomplish what this confrontational monster succeeds in doing; A volcanic tour de force — this marvel is the single most courageous effort I’ve witnessed inside the walls of a theatre. New York Times

Could this 5-star, dangerous, seductive comedy-monster literally change your life? How is it possible that a comedy show could make audience members quit their jobs, reunite with estranged siblings, propose marriage and end friendships by the time the show is finished? Experience the madness as this exquisite monstrosity unleashes an absurdly sadistic masterclass where something interesting must happen every 10 seconds. His mission: charm, disarm, shock-and-seduce. His target: You! Anything can happen as Red Bastard lures his students into raw conversation, traps, rewards and catch-22’s - encouraging risk and discovery. Red Bastard is Eric Davis. His unique show has won awards for Most Outrageous Show, Best Solo Performance, Best Theater, Best of Fest and a Community Commitment Award. In 2011, he created the role of Allen Smithee in Cirque Du Soleil’s Resident Hollywood show, Iris. In 2010, Mr. Davis won the Golden Nose for Clown of the Year in New York. In addition, he was a Finalist for the NY Comedy Festival’s Andy Kaufman Award.

Sean Cannon died 12 years ago. His death could have been prevented. This powerful piece by one of Ireland’s most daring independent theatre companies, explores the changing nature of the relationship between real life mother and son: Ann and Feidlim Cannon (who also perform) in the aftermath of a family tragedy.

Brokentalkers have yet again produced a raw, poignant, and deeply moving piece of excruciatingly honest storytelling, delivered here with simplicity and poise Irish Theatre Magazine

With honesty, humour and profound courage the performers attempt to bring dead memories back to life with the aid of their real life psychotherapist. Representations of their family members are made to play along with the recreated memories, to answer difficult questions from their past. Brokentalkers are a Dublin based theatre company renowned internationally for their pioneering and socially engaged productions. Productions that speak of the real lives experiences of the participants in an authentic and highly theatrical way.

LEO Y 2 D & CHA MA EL EON PRO DUC T IO NS (CAN/GER)

A mind-bending, surreal and funny one man show that challenges the senses and perceptions of reality through a clever interplay of live performance and video projection. LEO turns your perspective upside-down in this gravity defying yet surprisingly touching piece of physical theatre. Is he falling or floating? At the end, the question is of no real importance.

Simply an unmissable Fringe treat ***** Mark Brown, The List

Directed by Montréal actor and director Daniel Briére, and based on an original idea by Tobias Wegner, LEO is a triple award winner, including the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh and Fringe First Awards. AWAKE

WHITE RABBIT RED RABBIT

AWAKE PROJECTS (SWE)

NASSIM SOLEIMANPOUR (IRAN)

Christopher Sivertsen and The Awake Project have composed a dance of death with the same beautiful melancholy as Lou Reed’s ‘twilight’ ballad Perfect Day. Vestmanlands Läns Tidning

Awake Projects was founded in 2008 by Norwegian Christopher Sivertsen. Along with three other company members, Chris was a principal performer with worldrenowned company Song of the Goat (Poland) who have visited the Fringe many times. AWAKE is produced by London and Berlin based Producer Natalie Richardson. Max is a man at a crossroads. He’s received some bad news and now he has to decide what to do. Should he share the information with his pregnant wife and friends who have gathered to celebrate his birthday? Is it kind? Is it moral to keep such a secret? A simple story about health, harmony and the choices we make told in words, acrobatics, music and dance.

An unnerving comedy of human freedom that defies national boundaries, censorship… and description. Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour’s audacious theatrical experiment will come as a shock — not least to the actor handed the script the moment they walk on stage! A different unsuspecting performer will take the stage each night, joining the audience on a journey into the unknown; stumbling upon the humorous, terrifying and utterly personal. This internationally acclaimed new work forges connections across time and continents. A stunning piece of theatre, thought-provoking and morally unsettling. It’s a wonderful testament to the power of words to transcend cultures and borders. — Fringereview

It’s a privilege to see it performed. Nassim Soleimanpour is a fiercely – even frighteningly – original voice, and a thrillingly adept craftsman..... Go see! The Skinny

Awake Projects also presents the Awake LOVE Orchestra. Combining voices from world music with cellos and percussion they create new versions of traditional songs inspired by Gypsy, Folk and Eastern European music. LOVE orchestra runs at 15:30 from 14 — 26th August at C Venues Chambers Street.

WUNDERKAMMER CIRCA (AUS)

Wunderkammer (noun): a cabinet of wonders; a place where a collection of curiosities and rarities is exhibited. Internationally-acclaimed CIRCA return to Edinburgh for the first time in four years with Wunderkammer - an exquisite cabaret of the senses. Seven performers of alarming ability play with your perceptions of reality in this eye popping cocktail of new circus, cabaret and vaudeville. Watch as an enchanting diva melts into a rope, as balloons and bubblewrap discover their artistic souls while anarchic bodies twist and fly all around. Control, abandon, skill and humour all melt into a sinuous fugue of profound beauty in this wonderful production from Brisbane.

White-hot, funny and sexy, these are superhuman acrobats masquerading as mere mortals... few companies can match the innovation and sheer brilliance of CIRCA. The Stage
