Hello friends!

Pets in the Park! p. 4

Events and Outings p. 8

It is hard to believe that we are in our fifth year of incorporating our decision to return to the grassroot mission of our organization. We have been busy building relationships with national groups such as PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA and our efforts have produced positive results. Through these partnerships and our local adoption efforts, we have been able to provide loving and forever homes for 5,767 animals. It is very rewarding to reach out and assist adoptable animals in overcrowded facilities that are facing the possibility of euthanasia. We are determined to reduce the number of animals euthanized in our community simply because they are unwanted. Our low cost spay/neuter clinic provides a non-lethal solution to this overwhelming problem. Since the opening of our Agnes Lawrence Spay/Neuter Clinic in 2011 over 12,500 dogs and cats have been sterilized, significantly impacting the number of litters being born in our area. We're gearing up for our annual Pets in the Park event!!! This year's event will be held on Saturday, August 20th in Gypsy Hill Park, Staunton. Please join us in the Park and participate in the Walk for the Animals, the Doggone Good Dog Show, and the Candid Cat Photo contest. In addition to our variety of vendors this year we are welcoming 3 food trucks. Again, we will be celebrating by hosting "A Cause for Paws", on Saturday, August 13th at the Best Western Waynesboro. This year's event features music by our friends The Janitors! We will also of course still feature the ever-popular and fantastic silent auction! Plan to come and enjoy the music, heavy hors d'oevres, and silent auction offerings. And don't forget your dancing shoes!

Volunteer Service Awards

WHO’S WHO AT THE AUGUSTA REGIONAL SPCA EMPLOYEES Shelter Director Debbie Caywood

This year we are pleased to present Volunteer Service Awards to Cameron and Sue Nickels. Sue and Cameron are truly our feline angels! They visit the shelter almost daily and spend time spoiling and socializing our cat room residents.

Shelter Coordinator - Customer Service Rebecca Caywood Accounting Stacy Moran

There are some people that have natural instincts when it comes to animals and they both have that special knack with cats. Both of them know every kitty by name and have a talent with placing the right cat with the right family. Not only do they give their time volunteering, they also sponsor adoptions and pay toward the cost of the adoption fee. The Augusta Regional is very proud to honor Sue and Cameron with our volunteers of the year and our SPCA kitties totally agree!

Maryanne Moffett was passionate about animals and — even after death — her care and devotion lives on. “Maryanne truly loved all of God’s creatures,” said her husband Stuart Moffett. Words he said can even be found on her headstone. Maryanne Moffett died Feb. 3, 2015.

Altering our community

one pet at a time

Every year in May, the Augusta Regional SPCA is honoring Maryanne Moffett’s memory with $20 spay and neuter appointments, thanks in part to a $300,000 endowment gift she left to the organization. “She was a lifetime supporter of the SPCA,” said Debbie Caywood, director of SPCA. “We are very humbled and appreciative that it was her wish to carry on the SPCA.” Discounted spay and neuter events are often possible through various charity funds including those from PetSmart Caywood said, but annual funding is contingent on its availability. Maryanne’s gift ensures the affordable clinics can be offered on a yearly basis, she said. “This one is so special because it was actually the bequest of a long-time SPCA board member, friend and supporter,” Caywood said. “You know that person really wanted to the money to go locally to make a difference.” This May, $10,000 was designated to help offset the cost of spaying and neutering animals. Stuart Moffett, 78, visited the SPCA clinic to see the animals undergo surgery and talk about his wife’s determination to save the animals in her community. “Her main thing was spay and neuter,” he said. The conversation was sprinkled with laughter as Stuart Moffett retold the stories of Maryanne’s determination to save strays and the couple’s mismatched love story. Seeing him overcome with emotion, Caywood told Stuart Moffett that Maryanne's gift would touch many lives. She said people who participate in the spay and neuter clinics are often on limited funds and unable to afford the surgery. Maryanne's endowment gift will touch many lives, Caywood said. "Her wishes will live on forever," she told him. In collaboration with

This year we also received a series of "Blitz" grants from PetSmart Charities™. Each RESCUE WAGGIN’ grant being targeted to a specific demographic. The January campaign,"Happy Neuter Year" provided $20 neuter surgeries to male dogs or cats. The February campaign, "Beat the Heat" provided $20 spay surgeries for female cats. In June, we ran the campaign, "Precious Not Parents" which allowed for puppies or kittens under 6 mos. of age to be spayed or neutered for $20. ®

–Article excerpts from The News Leader, May 11, 2016

The last campaign (August), "Primp Your Pit", provides $20 spay/neuter surgeries for Pit Bulls. Through these grants, we have been able to financially assist our community members so that they may more easily afford the cost of altering their pets. And in-turn create a healthier pet population with less unwanted litters and fewer animals facing the threat of euthanasia because of overcrowded shelters.

Pets in the Park

Join us for our Annual Walk for the Animals! When you Walk for the Animals, you are helping hundreds of wonderful homeless pets find new homes where they will never again be abandoned, abused or neglected. Every valuable dollar raised goes toward shelter, medical treatment, and food for animals that are at risk of being euthanized due to over-crowded shelters. Your participation and fundraising in the Walk for Animals helps the Augusta Regional SPCA care for more than 1250 cats and dogs each year who are waiting for their forever home, and provide affordable spay/neuter services to more than 2000 animals annually. Take a walk with your canine companion, friends, colleagues, neighbors to raise money for animals in need. Form a team or travel solo. Enjoy a fun filled morning with other animal lovers and their four-legged best friends, all while we help end the tragedy of pet homelessness! Registration begins at 9 AM. There is no set fee for the event, we encourage you to ask your friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor your walk. A sponsorship form may be downloaded from our website or SEE INSIDE BACK COVER OF THIS NEWSLETTER FOR A SPONSORSHIP FORM!

Events & Outings A big thank you goes out on behalf of all the animals at the Augusta Regional SPCA to Valley Subaru of Staunton who hosted and organized the Santa Picture event on December 5, 2015. Also special thanks to Take One Imaging who did the photography! Thank you for all your efforts and for thinking of the animals during the holiday season! Thank you, also, to everyone who came and got their pictures taken with Santa! It was a great event!

Events & Outings On Saturday April 23 we were invited by Rockingham Cooperative/ACE Hardware in Waynesboro to attend their Spring Open House event. We took a few dogs who enjoyed meeting folks and listening to bluegrass music! Thank you Rockingham Cooperative/ACE Hardware!

Harriett needed to be snuggled!

Junior enjoyed the attention!

May 7 was Doggie Socialization Day with Mary Baldwin College students at the Rose Terrace. Bud and Freyja were the life of the party, as you can see everyone fell in love with them!

10

Brody loved the bluegrass!

Thank you to Petco in Staunton for frequently inviting us to showcase our adoptable animals there. Great exposure and our furry friends love the attention!

Bud greeted everyone who came in to shop that day!

Barney was treated to a pedicure while he was at Petco!

On June 11th Queen City Brewing hosted a "Pints for Paws" event with live music, games and food trucks. Patrons were able to bring their pets to enjoy in the festivities . $1 of every pint sold during the event went to support the SPCA. Thank you Queen City Brewing!!!

A look inside the Agnes Lawrence Spay/Neuter Clinic Our spay/neuter clinic has been rocking this year! Dr. Janice Raab and her staff have kept busy providing excellent care to their patients!

Thanks to the amazing generosity from the Maryanne Moffett bequest, our Spay/ Neuter clinic recieved a Warm Touch Air Blanket. As you can see these kitties have just had there alteration surgery & are recovering quite comfortably. 12

Tail Mail Thomnus the cat, who came to Arlington last Thursday, is doing well and learning lots of new things about windows and birds. We did have to run to the vet today because he was scratching his ears - the vet found some crud that he diagnosed as ear mites, so he gave us some drops. The vet was also very impressed by Thomnus's "glamor shot" and by the quality of your records - and the records made everything easier on Thomnus, who was really glad to have his ears cleaned out but was happy that was all he needed.

I adopted Gus from the Augusta SPCA in 2011 (formerly “Jerry”) and he is such a happy guy! Since then he has traveled with me from Waynesboro to Pittsburgh and is enjoying life in our large apartment with his brother Bogey and sister Kiki. He loves watching birds, playing with his siblings and staying close by my side (always!) I was told he had spent almost ten months at the shelter.

I’m so happy he is with me now. Now if I could just keep him off of my keyboard…

We adopted Murray this summer at 9 months. We celebrated his first birthday with him tonight and are so happy to have him in our family. He is full of energy and loves the yard and the kids! We love him! Even though he chewed through his present in less than 5 minutes!

He was Pet of the Week on WSVA TV and we adopted him that afternoon. His name is now P.J. He is doing great and he weighs 12 pounds now. Thank you so much for letting us adopt him. Thank you. 13

To whom it may concern, Named Doodle, Spock now He has turned into one of the family. Spock is now a year old. He just celebrated his first birthday as a Hedrick. He has shown us all the love and openness he has and we have loved him too. He was a little scared when we first got him but once he bonded with us humans and our 2 dogs at the time, he relaxed. He has survived the loss of one of our beloved dogs, Sometimes you wonder if he goes looking for her or he just knew. He is spoiled rotten. Spock loves to be outside. He has a fence and loves to go riding in a car. He does not care for strangers that he thinks are coming near his family, either outside or in. That is the only time he barks is to alert you. If you leave the house for 1 minute or a week he feels you have been gone forever and he attacks you at the door. He loves his treats everyday. We have him trained to come when he is called and he is rewarded for that. He also learned to sit. He is a very smart dog. When my granddaughter picked him out because he was all alone and was not with the other dogs now he is not alone and is well loved. Thank you for offering us such a wonderful addition to our family. I am sending you pictures for you to see how he has grown. Thank you so much.

To the SPCA, It is with GREAT sadness, and through vast tears, I put inform you that “Koji (formerly known as Chase) left me for heaven February 6, 2016. He got sick 3 days after Christmas. I had him to the ER in Verona, Middle River Vet, Cedarcrest and Dr. Chodrow made 2 house calls here. He was 1st diagnosed w/gastroenteritis, then spine problems. He was only 6. I adopted him from the SPCA Sept. 11, 2011. He had epilepsy - which y’all had never seen. Therefore, he was unable to receive 2 vaccinations at a time without getting a fever or be on many medicines w/o going into a comalike state. But we managed his epilepsy well, as I’d had a cattle dog when I was younger that also had epilepsy and lived to be 18 yrs old! My only consolation is that he was VERY HAPPY and knew he was VERY MUCH LOVED in his short, short life. We had many great times together and he slept in my arms. He is buried with my 16 1/2 yr old cat, Harmoni, under a swaying pine tree, beneath a bird house where yellow finches nest. He was my son. 14

This picture is from her 13th birthday party, May 2016. We celebrated with carrots and ranch dressing -- Maggie's been in renal failure for a year, so she's on a renal diet -- carrots are renal-diet approved, and we did a little ranch dressing because if you can't have fun on your birthday, well ... (and it's her favorite)

(December 29, 2015) 12 years ago today we brought Maggie (then Meeko) home from the The Augusta Regional SPCA. Thanks for taking care of our girl before she joined our family.

Bella seven months happy in her forever home!

Now it's been 12 1/2 years since we got her from the SPCA. I've been lucky to have several dogs in my life through the years, but Maggie is "that one" dog that people talk about. I've been lucky to have her for so long, and of course, I'm counting on her living another 13 years ...

Thank you so much for connecting us with Cash! We have had him for a few short hours, and are already head over heels! He is full of energy and love, and is the perfect fit for our little family. Cash has been playing with his new brother since we got home, and just fell asleep in my lap. We are so blessed to have found him. Thank you for the awesome adoption experience!

Jade had her first visit to the beach. She and her new sister Tula love the sound and the water. We've only had Jade 5 weeks but she has adjusted to her brother and sister and our home quickly. I'm so in love with this sweet dog! Thank you for letting me adopt her.

This beautiful girl.. Chelsea. . was adopted from you April 15, 2011. She died from congestive heart failure Feb. 16. She was a loved family member. This was taken the day before her death at 10 yrs old. 15

rst trip Gators fi each. to the b , yeah... He said

Gator is not digging the cool weather, he is ready to head back to the beach!

We have fallen completely in love with Molly and as you can tell, she has adapted well and is oh so comfortable.

We are one big happy fam ily with Midnight and Lil ah (now Simon and Lilly). Brothe r and sister in the same ca ge since birth. Thank you Augu sta SPCA. You'll be ha pp y to know they have adjusted very well.

As an update, Magnum (now known as Draven) made it through his first snow storm too, with the help of a warm hat. He is so loved and is getting along great with our German Shepherd

This little lady is loving her home almost as much as we love her! Justice Jane Johnson. "JJ" for short has been a highlight! Thank you so much! 16

ear from Tiger Happy New Y

Moonshine says thank you for helping me find my furever home!!! I love my big sister, she is helping me come out of my shell!!!!

Lilly Rose has become an important, happy part of our household. She is very friendly with other dogs. She loves to run around, chase, be chased, and wrestle with dogs and humans. She still doesn't know what to do with squirrels, and until she catches one, I won't know either. It is wonderful to have her. I can't wait to see how much more she grows!

Our rescue hound, Chief is one year old today! He's a big goofy affectionate walker hound dog who enjoys eating drywall, electrical cords, couch cushions, and to burn off those empty calories- jumping 4 foot tall gates, and digging in the mud. Happy birthday Chief Chief, hope this year is less shocking with a better menu! So glad he chose us back in April. 17
