The School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID) offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree and a Masters of Architecture degree. In order to meet the needs of faculty, students and the community, the ARC seeks to acquire, maintain and make available to users an extensive collection of resources relating to the fields of architectural design, design theory, architectural history, landscape architecture, graphic communication and representation, architectural technologies, professional practice, planning environment and behavior, urban design and other areas relevant to the professional program. The collection level is appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate research. I.

PURPOSE

The mission of the Architecture Resource Center (ARC) is to encourage and facilitate study and research in architecture within the framework of the mission of the School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID). It reflects a commitment to the SAID, as well as to the professional community and the general public. The goal of the ARC is to provide information resources that support the curriculum of the SAID; to develop a broad collection of resources covering the field of architecture; and to build upon the Center’s special strength in environmental design. The clientele are the students and faculty of the SAID; however, the ARC also serves the Andrews University community as well as the wider professional and general public. The ARC collects a wide variety of materials at different levels: basic, undergraduate, graduate, comprehensive/doctoral, and exhaustive.

II.

COLLECTION POLICIES

Any print materials relating to architecture and associated topics of the SAID curriculum, but purchased with non-architecture fund allocations, may be housed within the ARC as there is an agreement between the requestor and the ARC Director. The selection of resources is the responsibility of the ARC Director, who takes into consideration the needs of the architecture faculty and students. The ARC provides a wide range of books and periodicals, as well as appropriate nonbook formats, which support the SAID curriculum. Audiovisual and multimedia materials are acquired and housed in the ARC to meets the needs of architecture students and professionals. Other resource formats collected include boxed plates and product catalogs (“materials; not product samples). EDRA materials are accepted and housed within the ARC, irrespective of format. III.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

Since 1987 the ARC has developed a special relationship with the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) and has become the official depository worldwide for publications on environment and human factor studies. This interdisciplinary collection contains books, monographs, series, journals, EDRA proceedings, documents, technical papers, and multimedia materials supporting research in the discipline of environment and behavior. The collection has been developed over the past 35 years and is the most comprehensive in the world. There are more than 15,000 EDRA titles currently held in the ARC. This collection has been augmented yearly because of the EDRA book display held at each annual EDRA conference. Each year new books and materials were added to the collection as listed in the annual bibliograpies. The bibliography gives EDRA members the opportunity to order the materials for their personal or corporate libraries. The annual bibliographies are also maintained on the Andrews University Digital Commons (digitalcommons.andrews.edu/edra). The Senseman Rare Book Collection was donated to the ARC, in 1986 by Ronald S. Senseman, an accomplished career architect from the Washington, D.C area. The collection contains rare and valuable books, old photos mounted on linen of high renaissance architecture, along with many of his original drawings and sketches, and other personal items. Among his government and civic architectural projects has been the Chapel at Andrews Air Force Base, an addition to the Navy War College in Newport, Rhode Island, the Army War College in Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C. and an addition to the Walter Reed Hospital. Other projects have included schools, nursing homes, hotels, and private residences, many of which were built for the SDA denomination.

GENERAL COLLECTION GUIDELINES

English is the primary language of acquisition, because of the heavy emphasis on pictorial and graphic presentation, materials in other languages such as German and Italian, Scandinavian etc. may be acquired. Diversity of geographical and cultural materials is encouraged due to the nature of architecture and the international emphasis at Andrews. The main criteria for selection are (1) indexing in architecture periodical indexes, and (2) relevance to the architecture curriculum. Indexes are considered only if they relate to architecture. Some continuation series are significant and important in the field of architecture. Because of the nature of architectural study and the resources that support it, most print materials do not become obsolete. De-selection will apply mainly to materials in the fields of technology. V.

OTHER GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

Electronic access is available for all indexes and databases that support the needs and interest of the ARC and its resources. Gift materials are treated in accordance with the James White Library policy on donated materials. Donors will understand that duplicate and low priority items might not be placed in the ARC, but may be sold or donated to other institutions. Multiple or duplicate copies will only be considered if there is a significant demand for the materials either at the ARC or elsewhere in James White Library.
