Tupac Resurrects at Coachella Is This The Future of Music? I was up the other night and decided to catch some of the closing acts of Coachella 2012. I was pretty stoked to see At The Drive In, Miike Snow (even though we recently covered them during SXSW), and of course hip-hop legends Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg…

So I was just chillin and expecting an epic encore performance by Snoop and Dre and with such high expectations, I couldn’t even imagine what was to come. During their set they had special guests including Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 cent. Being that we caught the Shady Records SXSW Showcase, I was fully prepared for Eminem to make a surprise appearance and it sure happened that way. So that’s epic right??? Not really!!! Then the most unexpected event happened. All of a sudden THE Tupac Shakur appears on stage and greets the crowd with “Yeah, you know what the f*ck this is? What up Dre? What up Snoop? What the f*ck is up Coachella?” -- as Tupac would have tastefully said back in ’96. The last time I took a hallucinogen was years ago, so I knew I wasn’t trippin’. It really was Tupac Shakur! I wasn’t even sure of what to think! I asked myself “Is he really alive?” Well, if he was, it would’ve been the biggest hoax in the music industry next to Elvis! Because we all know his death was really a conspiracy, right? We of course know it wasn’t Tupac, but it might as well have been him, because that hologram was as real as it gets -- viewing it from my computer that is. He started off with “Hail Mary” off of his final studio album “The Don Killuminati” and led into the classic “Gangsta Party” featuring Snoop Dogg. It wasn’t really him, but I’m sure it felt good for Snoop Dogg to be up there with a version of his old homie. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t enjoy the performance, but it did leave me feeling a bit eerie inside. What strides does this evergrowing monster called the music industry have in store for us in the future? I mean, if they can bring TUPAC SHAKUR back to life with a hologram at one of the largest festivals in the world, what else are they capable of?

whole “L.A. Woman” album, or Jimi Hendrix performing every single song in his arsenal all day at a music festival named “HENDRIX FEST?” The possibilities are honestly endless with these holograms. Sooner or later, festival organizers won’t even need artists to throw these festivals. Would you go to a festival featuring The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors? It sounds almost taboo, but I know I would definitely be there. This does bring up a problem: what benefit is that for an aspiring indie artist? What chance is there for you to hop on a world-wide festival? Not much if you ask me. Why would one of these festivals take a chance on an independent artist, when they can book The Beatles to sell tickets, or as we literally just witnessed, TUPAC!!!

Get this through your heads people, we just witnessed the resurrection of one of the most famous rappers, musicians, and pop icons of all time! It really won’t be long before these tours DO start happening and the music industry will definitely be there to reap the benefits. What matters to them is what sells tickets. Artist integrity and talent comes after that, and it might not even be second on the list either. I like to call them the 1% of the music industry, because they are. There are hundreds of thousands of bands out there and less than 1% get to play these music festivals that control most of the revenue in the industry (I wish I had exact figures, but I know there is a large discrepancy here). There is already a Pink Floyd laser light tour, which has no members from Pink Floyd on stage and they have no problem selling tickets -- and that’s with Roger Waters still touring. With this Tupac Shakur hologram being introduced the last Sunday at Coachella, it’s really up to the indie artists to keep pushing their stuff on a local level and to collaborate with smaller independent local festivals -- a big niche in the Austin scene. These smaller festivals are the key to maintaining integrity in an industry that has been exploiting artists since it’s fruition. These festivals are the ones in the industry with the money and they have the power to throw these hologram shows and tours. And even if they haven’t already thought about it, the cat is out of the bag now.

Just imagine being able to see The Beatles performing the entire “Abbey Road” album, Jim Morrison and The Doors performing the

Clown Speaks About His New Book..............

When I received news of a set interview with Shawn Crahan from Slipknot, my jaw dropped. When their self-titled debut album dropped in 1999, the songs “Wait and Bleed”, “(Sic),” “Surfacing,” and “Spit It Out” did not stop playing in my home. Seeing Slipknot live is an incredible experience. These guys have so much energy when they go on stage. They killed it when I had the privilege of checking them out during their “Tattoo The Earth Tour 2000” in Mercedes, TX. Not only was this their debut, but they were headlining along with other amazing bands like Slayer, Sepultura, Tiger Army, The Unseen and Sick of it all.

Percussionist, Shawn Crahan (also known as, “Clown” or “#6”), made an appearance at the SXSW panel for a Q & A. We were able to catch up with Shawn at his SXSW party and book preview at The Jr. (formerly Emo’s Jr.). Shawn is a very nice and down to earth kind of guy who enjoyed SXSW just as much as everyone else did. One of Shawn’s highlights was checking out Pennywise and running into the different aspects that SXSW had to offer. “SXSW is the Mardi Gras of music, not Mardi Gras on crack,” said Crahan.

Shawn let us in on the release of his first photography book titled “Apocalyptic Nightmare Journey”, and it surely has some sick paintings along with some creatively manipulated photos. “This book has been in the making for twelve years,“ said Crahan. “It was done by three, but we were waiting for the right time.”

Finally the release of his book will hit wherever books are sold on June 19. Loving and appreciating all of his fans, Shawn even brought two young fans into the interview stating “Music is the closest that I come to God.” Shawn, along with Slipknot will be coming back later in the year to Texas for Mayhem Fest with Slayer, Motorhead and Anthrax.

3rd Season Premieres

May 29th - 9:30 CT

Beer, Pizza, Music & A Quick Chat W/ Adam Their most anticipated season yet, Workaholics Season 3 premiers May 29th at 9:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central. When they are not filming, Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, Blake Anderson and Kyle Newacheck are out having a blast and hosting parties just like they did during their free House Party at South By South West at Icenhausers.

Blake

Having more than 10,000 RSVP’s, we inevitably had a hard time getting into this shindig, but after speaking to the right people we finally entered and received an invitation to interview the crazy cast.

Anders

Our first interview with Anders and Kyle was unexpected but that is what made it exciting. Kyle, one of the creators and fourth amigo (lazy drug dealer) in the series is not as well known as the rest of the cast. This confused me and I had to be reminded by asking for his name (embarrassing), but he was cool enough not to put me on the spot. Not only did this house party include the cast but also games

and an outdoor stage with performances by bands including: Reptar, Youngblood Hawke, Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs, Cool Kids, Trash Talk and Wavves, among others. The Wizard Crew even performed, but unfortunately we were unable to catch them. Regardless, we were sitll able to hangout back stage with Curren$y, Adam, & Blake after the first interview. After pouring down a couple of brews with Adam and Blake & munching down on some Austin’s Pizza, we decided to interview them along with Lee Spielman (Lead singer of Trash Talk). By this time, we all had a little too much fun at the party. Nonetheless it was, as they say................................ “VERY TIGHT BUTTHOLE!”

The interview to the right is a combination of both interviews, but stay tuned in to our website, www.ATXMusicMag.com for the full- lenth video interview, which will be released soon!!!

Interview with WORKAHOLICS

& Lee Spielman (vocals) of “Trash Talk” Their Take on ATX and Their SXSW House Party:

Blake: “We’re really honored to be here with this guy [Lee]”

Anders: “We’re throwin’ it down in major ways. We’re going hard in the paint. We’re just trying to have a good time and fortunately, we have our own party that we can host. It’s been pretty nuts.”

What They Thought of “Trash Talks” set at Icenhauer’s:

Adam: “Pizza and Beer! Booze plus balls!” Blake: “It makes me feel really drunk.” Adam: “Everything they’ve been giving me makes me feel nauseous.” Blake: “We’re always drunk.” Lee: “I might throw up right now.”

How They Felt About 300+ Fans Waiting Outside Their Party @ Icenhauer’s: Kyle: “I mean, on real levels, it’s very weird.” Anders: “Yeah, it’s a weird signal, you know. No, it’s a f**kin’ honor! It really is you know. We put some hours in and then you got people coming and they like what you do.” Kyle: “That’s what’s really cool. Just seeing everybody that loves the show, it’s work, it’s good.” Adam: “True, true, thanks for coming out. Thanks for supporting and thanks for waiting in line for like f**king four hours. It’s insane!” Blake: “Yeah, it was a crazy turnout. I think everybody’s just here to see Trash Talk.” Adam: “Ninety percent Trash Talk.” Lee: “There’s one million people here to see us!!”

Adam: “Lee almost got our whole party shut down because he f**king rocked so f**king hard.” Lee: “I don’t know man. I didn’t do anything, it was all the kids. Always blame it on someone else.” Blake: “That’s it, it wasn’t us, it wasn’t us.”

Their Take on the New 3rd Season: Anders: “More of the same, except dumber right?” Kyle: “Yeah, I think we got a little dumber this year.” Anders: “Downhill as far as depending how fast I go. Its just going to be a ‘Shotgun Blast’, as Adam would say.” Kyle: “It’s a Shotgun Blast of comedy. Be ready for it. We got a lot of stunts and a lot of new toys. We meet some of the dude’s families, which is really cool. I’m really excited to see where these guys are from. You know what I mean?” Adam: “[New Season Drops] May 29th! June 6th, new dvd!!”

Last Shout Out: Anders: “Clap, it’s like Carl Weathers, you know what I’m talking about. Peace out boys!”

B National Tour w/ Arctic Monkeys L A C K

E

Akron’s two-man wrecking crew, The Black Keys, returned to Austin Wednesday, on the night of April 25th. Delivering nearly four hours of superb blues/rock n’ roll, singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and manic drummer Patrick Carney jammed their set to a packed house at The Frank Erwin Center.

K E Y S

English rockers, Arctic Monkeys, got the crowd going by hitting them with a full hour of numerous hits off their own wildly adventurous catalog. After their last appearance at Stubbs BBQ last year, I knew what to expect. Their set consisted of everything from both past and present such as “Teddy Picker,” “Fluorescent Adolescent” and “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor.” Of course “Brick By Brick” off last year’s album, Suck It and See, was on the set list too. Arctic Monkeys have been around for many years and their progression has everyone coming back to hear more. From there, it was time for Akron’s finest to take the stage. They immediately

launched into “Howling for You” from 2010’s Brothers -- which some might say drove the band into its recent success. Long term fans know better than to agree with that statement though. Grooving into classic songs such as “Thickfreakness,” “Girl Is On My Mind,” “I’ll Be Your Man” and “Your Touch,” they definitely gave their old-school fans what they wanted. Ending their fantastic set with their latest single “Lonely Boy,” the crowd of Keys fans was begging for another dose of Auerbach and Carney. The crowd nor I knew what to expect out of the encore. Only one question ran through my mind as the biggest disco ball came shining down from the ceiling: How much better can this get? Beginning their encore with “Everlasting Light” and “She’s Long Gone,” they swam their way to the finale with “I Got Mine” off their 2006 Attack & Release album. This was one heck of a ride through the Black Keys time machine, which is second to none.

Mary Jane Psychotherapy Writer: D.T.

Since the dawn of modern man, not excluding primitive and extinct cousins, we have diligently sought the benefits of altered states of being. The motives are varied and range from stress-reduction, enlightment, conviviality, social relations, and just plain blotting out whichever reality one may find annoying and painful. The demand for changing how we feel, think, and act is a fundamental, innate phenomena that doesn’t seem to want to fade into the conservative, sober night. While certain forms of pleasure through ingested chemicals blatantly carry tremendous personal and social consequences, most governments have prohibited and demonized any and all forms of self-induced changes in consciousness. Do we really need to condemn marijuana-use, in its many forms, to a level comparable with Oxycontin, meth, or PCP? Scores of people die from aspirin overdose rather than from tokin’ mota. Sure, there are bronchial consequences and lapses in cognitive functioning, but memory degradation can be more accurately linked to the lifestyle of certain bud smokers. Neuronal synaptic pruning is mainly associated to not using parts of your brain (lazy thinkers), than to consumption of T.H.C. I am a seasoned veteran of this domain and practice of sub-

stance use and abuse. From intravenous adventures to powered pleasures, I have combed the land, especially barrios, for any of the aforementioned reasons, in search of the next high. After several tragic entries into rehabs, halfway houses, hospitals, and various forms of quasi-higher power belief systems, I no longer feel the imperious urge to do any of those things, including the need to believe in a Sky Daddy. However, I still smoke occasionally. The first couple of years off of the needle and the glass dick, weed helped me get through those times. Now, I am in the midst of finishing a master’s degree and moving on to attaining a doctorate. Is complete abstinence necessary to have a fulfilling life, apparently not. In the past, I found myself stricken by far more anxiety and irrational thoughts in total sobriety than now, smoking recreationally and responsibly. If I have research to do, a presentation, or therapeutic sessions with clients, I simply refrain from bud until the right time presents itself. Rather than running back and forth to 12 step meetings and chanting archaic pseudo Judeo-Christian or metaphysical garbage while wearing a reverse pride sobriety jacket just to not shoot up or smoke hard shit, I now kick back, light up, laugh, eat, make love, and go to bed....... So hardcore, right?

T H E G R A M M Y S Integrity Is Definitely Not Their Strength Alright I’m 30 years old and can honestly say that I’ve never once seen the Grammys...until this year. Now I’m usually an underground music fan but due to circumstances at work I’ve become something of a pop music “expert”. I know with advancements in technology people now have the attention span of a cracked out 4 year old. Everything has to be flashy, outrageous, and quick, and the Grammys did their best to oblige. First I wanna start by asking, who the hell is Bruno Mars’ chopo dealer because that dude was on fire! And I can definitely enjoy watching some dude on stage who looks like he’s been up for a few days. Next is Madonna. Yuck! Does anyone really want to watch seniors shake their ass in revealing outfits? Next I can’t even tell you what I was watching during Nicki Minaj’s bit. I mean what were they trying to exorcise? What’s left of her dignity or what because that whole thing seemed pretty desperate to stand out. But there was one performance I was eagerly anticipating. The recently divorced, always generous with her cleavage, Katy Perry! And of course I had to catch the one

show were she’s wearing the least revealing outfit and singing some crybaby stuff probably about Aldous Snow. But what can I say about Chris Brown? How did he even get the Grammys gig given the whole Rihanna spousal abuse incident? What were they thinking? Not to mention he just sucks. Bad. And his dance moves?! He’s supposed to be some bad mofo on the dance floor, but he really messed that up real good with moves that would only impress America’s evergrowing uncoordinated population. This dude needs to seriously stop getting his moves from House Party and The Matrix, cause it’s not working. It honestly would’ve been cooler to watch me stumble up stairs after a night of Wild Turkey and some fake chron! I can definitely guarantee that! in the end, the Grammys aren’t there to make everybody happy. Their sole existence is based on pleasing their sponsors by getting people to watch. Whether it’s to discover new artists, see what your favorite star is wearing, or just plain shock value, they get you watching. Hell, they got me watching.

BOWLING FOR SOUP

“FISHING FOR WOOS” ON U.S. SPRING TOUR Fresh off the boat returning from the U.K comes the quirky & musically talented Pop Punk group of four out of Dallas, Texas. They brought you hits like “High School Never Ends” & “1985” I’m talking about the band none other than BOWLING FOR SOUP. The band is now back in the U.S. kicking off their first shows of 2012, which started on April 18 in Lawrence, KS and culminates in their hometown, Dallas, on May 5. Before stopping in Dallas, the band will also be melting our faces off here in Austin, TX on May 3 with PATENT PENDING, FRESHMAN 15, and SANDLOT HEROES in support. Tickets are on sale now!!! The band is currently on the road in support of their latest album, Fishing For Woos, which features fan favorites “S-S-S-Saturday Night” and “Turbulence”. Feel free to snag your copy of the new album on ITunes and at all major retailers. DON’T YOU DARE miss out on one of pop punks most beloved bands live this spring!

ATXMM: How did the band come up with the idea for making the album called “Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies”? a compilation album of cover songs and contributions to movie soundtracks. Reddick: Basically, we had just come off touring for a little over two years and were taking a break before jumping into the next album...We had all of these songs we had done for film and TV, some released and some not, laying around in a huge scattered pile that we thought our fans might want to hear...So that’s it...We put it all together and you get Goes To the Movies... ATXMM: Being that you were on VH1’s “I Love the ‘90s: Part Deux” I have to ask. What is the one thing you guys miss most from the 90’s? Reddick: Definitely not college! I do wish my red flannel shirt was more accepted...It is super comfy.... ATXMM: I read that the song “1985” was in fact given to you by SR-71’s lead singer Mitch Allan. How did this happen and were you all aware that it was going to end up being one of your biggest hits?! Reddick: It is actually not quite that simple of a story... But yes...Mitch and SR-71 had a version of the song they released in Japan...We were finishing up our newest album at the time and Mitch called me and said, “you gotta do this song”...He was cool enough to let me have my way with it lyrically and arrangement wise, and the song became our lead single on that album....I would have never predicted it to be so big...But I am glad it was! ATXMM: Your videos have a reputation for being funny. Do you guys come up with your own concept for your videos? Reddick: Absolutely...We are 100 percent involved in everything we do creatively...

ATXMM: Also, on some of the videos you guys have. you feature previous songs of yours as an introduction for the video. Why is that? Reddick: It started after “the Bitch Song”...We used the same director for our follow up single Girl all the Bad Guys want and needed an opening scene to show on a TV at the opening of the video...After we did that one, we thought it was kind of a nice touch to revisit previous videos within newer videos....Man...I am confused! ATXMM: You guys just got done touring in the UK... Any memorable shows or events that happened out there? Reddick: Always a blast in the UK...This was our third anual acoustic tour...And my favorite to date....The fans there are special... ATXMM: To an older fan of Bowling for Soup, how would you compare the new “Fishin’ For Woos” album to your older stuff? Reddick: Actually, for the older fan, it will feel like you never stopped listening....It is very much remnicent of Drunk Enough to Dance or Hangover.... ATXMM: Any shout outs you want to give in Austin? Any specific people/venues? Any standout memories from a previous show in Austin? Reddick: I love Austin....We were set to move there a few years back, but decided to stay put....When we recorded Sorry For PArtyin a few years back, we ate at Kerbey Lane every day and finished out nights at a place called Aussie’s....Both were near the studio and the hotel respectively, and we are creatures of habbit... I always go get a beer at the Blind Pig when I am in town, and of course, the PArish is our favorite place to play these days.... So many good times in Austin in the past...Nice I actually rememeber a few!!

South Austin’s New Smoke, Tattoo, &

Music Venue

In the Summer of 2010, a couple of guys sitting in a cloudy room, deep in South Austin, wondered why there wasn’t a quality smoke shop in their neighborhood. Tired of the same old dimly lit, dusty, black-light poster vibe you get when walking into a traditional ‘head shop’, it wasn’t just a convenient location they wanted. Rocky Gruver and Tommy Donnelly felt like the whole genre/ industry needed revamping. The young entrepreneurs envisioned a more sophisticated establishment to shop for their smoking accessories. They focused on heavily on local heady glass from independent blowers, and felt great customer service, expert product knowledge & supporting local live music would be more encompassing of Austin’s smoke scene than the crack pipes, pornography, and synthetic weed found in other shops. Having very little money to start the business, Billy Cannon’s participated in a pilot program in a co-op with other small business incubation. With the right location secured, in August 2010, Billy Cannon’s opened for business. Right from the start Billy Cannon’s was committed to a company philosophy to be a positive and active member of the community. Shortly after opening, Billy Cannon’s organized their first event on Saturday September 11, 2010. Instead of having a grand opening party, the company purposely took themselves out of the spotlight for a greater cause. Organizing an all day tribute to those affected on 9/11, Billy Cannon’s hosted and organized a hot rod car show and skateboard competition with all proceeds benefiting Soldier’s Angels. Additionally, all the day’s action and live musical performances were UStreamed to soldiers deployed in Iraq. In their second effort, the smoke shop organized a holiday toy drive for SafePlace of Austin with great success. In 2011, during the tragic effects of the Bastrop County wildfire, the busi-

ness joined a coalition of local organizations seeking to help. Billy Cannon’s offered their location for use as a donation exchange point for South Austin residents and helped sort the donations for more efficient delivery to the Bastrop area. With a lot of hard work, determination, and extremely loyal (almost cult-like) customer base, Billy Cannon’s outgrew their original grassroots location after a little more than a year in the co-op. At the same time, a neighboring business, Art Attack Worldwide, was getting ready to make a jump of their own to a bigger location. With Billy Cannon’s Smoke Shop displaying their local handmade glass like the art that it is, and Art Attack’s commitment to only the highest quality custom tattoos, a mutual respect and strong alliance developed. With over 15 years of experience, Sean Hilterbrandt is always striving to push his craft to levels. The local glass blowers’ whose art is displayed at Billy Cannon’s mirrors that same commitment to their art. The marriage of the two businesses at first occurred naturally from simply sharing a physical address. With overlapping target demographics the businesses were wise to split cost on their marketing efforts. The partnership was officially formed in the Fall of 2011, and together in January 2012, opened up Billy Cannon’s Smoke & Ink. The new shop, located at the corner of William‘Billy’Cannon & West Gate Blvd. is definitely unique to Austin. Bringing the ‘Arts’ full circle, Billy Cannon’s added canvas art and music instruments to their inventory. Slowly gaining a rep and being recognized as a legit live music venue, the shop’s sound & lighting system and intimate setting creates the perfect vibe for any scene. Billy Cannon’s interpretation of a true counterculture shop for South Austin, is a unique recipe that is right on time.

The Expendables - Gone Soft (2012)

The Expendables’ best work gets revisited as an acoustic recording project. Which means all you Midwest farmers’ daughters can now ride a horse while listening to The Expendables. Best known for a fast-paced, punk, surf, guitar heavy sound, Gone Soft takes their powerhouse rock songs and shows a musically balanced softer side of their fan-favorite classic songs. The 12 track album features songs off their past albums, including “Bowl For Two”, “Positive Mind,” and many more. Trying To Focus is the first song released and tells the truth about being on the road. You might have heard it before, but not this way. The songs’ slower, rhythmic, brushes on the snare drum set the pace you need to patiently digest the gems found on this album. Gone Soft will allow fans to experience the stripped down and unplugged version of The Expendables. “After years of fans asking for an acoustic album, we finally delivered. We experimented with different tempos, melodies, and instrumentation while recording music that spans our entire career to date,” says Raul of The Expendables. The Expendables, California’s highly respected rock-surf band, is set to release their first full-length acoustic album, Gone Soft on May 17th, 2012. The Expendables will be performing in Austin on May 5th at the Texas Ski Ranch before hitting the road for their Southwest Gone Soft Tour from May 18, 2012 – May 26, 2012, in support of their new album.

Voodoo Glow Skulls - Break The Spell (2012)

Voodoo Glow Skulls’ Break The Spell album is a groovy-ass collection of Voodoo flavor. And by saying groovy, I don’t mean hippy shit, I mean you can’t help but shake your ass to it. To try and compare this to any other Voodoo album would not be fair. It’s different, but the same. They managed to create an eerie groove with a hard kick in this one. Some of my favorite tracks are “Creep Tonight”- which is creepy as hell, “Knucklehead”- a major head bobber and body shaker accompanied with the horn and woodwind section giving it a smooth flow, as they do throughout the whole album; “Haunt You” another catchy-ass tune. I can’t help but dig this album. To simply state, just get this album; you’ll be stoked you did. Also, if you have a chola girlfriend, bang her to it, she’ll come around.

Alabama Shakes - Boys and Girls (2012)

They were a must see show during South By South West and have been gathering a larger following ever since. The release of their debut album Boys & Girls, brought such a rush of eleven songs delivered in thirty-eight minutes. Their latest single and opening track “Hold On”, gives a perfect example of what this bluesy/rock n’ roll album is all about. Lead singer, Brittany Howard’s soulful vocals deliver such a passionate feeling, while the boys keep the beat and riffs rolling smoothly. Having serious lyrics in tracks such as;”I Found You” and “Rise To The Sun”, they can also let loose just like they do in “Going To The Party”. Make sure to keep an eye out for this rock n’ roll group straight out of Athens, Alabama, who will also be touring with Jack White this summer.
