CAPTIVATING | POWERFUL | INSPIRED Nothing Replaces The LIVE Experience - This is our mantra this year. It is time to get back to celebrating the arts in person, with shared experiences and inspiration. So often, I leave the theater awe-struck at what I’ve just experienced; that’s what we aim for. This season will not disappoint. Dance is such a distinct art form. Luminous, arduous, meaningful and inspiring. “I’m overwhelmed; this was not what I expected.” This is the reaction I most often hear from audiences, something our longtime subscribers have always known. Our 40+ years of experience affords TITAS the unique perspective of looking back and appreciating the amazing impact that high-quality, curatorial arts presentation has on a community, on a city. TITAS/DANCE UNBOUND continues to present the most innovative, the most remarkable artists touring the world today. It’s time for all of us to return to the extraordinary shared performance experience, to leave our devices off and experience art with all our senses. Nothing Replaces the LIVE Experience!!! The 2023:24 season won’t disappoint. International, creative and breathtaking imagery makes this an exceptional set of the world’s most interesting movement artists. We proudly present a season of ten extraordinary companies from the United States, Japan, Canada, Israel and France. Four of these companies are making their Texas/Dallas debuts with TITAS. Thank you for being a part of another year of breathtaking performances, and thank you for actively engaging in the arts and for being a part of the TITAS/DANCE UNBOUND and AT&T Performing Arts Center family. What we do together, truly does make a difference.

Excerpts from Hervé Koubi’s working note Why do we dance? We are nothing in the universe. Life - and not just humanity - will be nothing more than a match lit and extinguished in the skies. Our existence will go unnoticed and our loneliness in the cosmos is maddening. What is difficult is not the hostility of the universe but its indifference to our existence. Yet if we manage to integrate this indifference, and accept the challenge of life, our existence can truly have meaning and be fulfilling. No matter how deep the darkness, we must bring our own light to it. The universe, the cycle of the seasons, how do we situate ourselves in this great vertiginous space? From this space, related to that which is life, delimited by a beginning and an end, our destiny for all of us will be the same, me, faced with this, I dance. SOL INVICTUS or how to make fun of death while dancing. Celebrate through dance, this vital energy that we must find within us to face our fears, to face ourselves. I wish to rediscover through danced gatherings this union of peoples and cultures beyond any con- sideration of ethnic, cultural or religious belonging. Dance gathers and unites. Dance goes beyond human and geographical boundaries, it goes beyond the boundaries of the codes of ballet, urban dance and acrobatics. SOL INVICTUS will be a generous piece, with vital energy, carried by 15 dancers from France, Europe, Brazil, Asia, North Africa, the United States of America, on a creation music by Mikael Karlsson and Maxime Bodson, and works from the repertoire of Steve Reich and Beethoven.

What’s Left ? - Love. Eros, Agapè, Dilectio, Caritas… All these names are found united in one in the Augustinian corpus. It’s about love in a broad sense. And yes, in Hervé Koubi’s project for 2023, it is still a question of bringing together, of federating, of uniting, of building, of dancing – together. If the line of flight remains in the trace of the gentle orientalist sequence of What the day owes to the night, the violence of The Barbarian nights and the ballettomaniac flight of Odyssey, major shifts subtly point to. Indeed, the Company now has dancers, French, Italian, Brazilian, Swiss, American, Taiwanese in addition to those, Tunisians, Moroccans and Algerians who are always companions, but also… women. The gesture is still "earthly", but less martial, the style is aerial. Hervé Koubi, in fact, is keen to weave a more refined dance work, by rubbing shoulders with the multiple personalities of newcomers. To this day, the choreographer wants to go beyond his Algerian origins. His wish is to give what remains after the physical process of Sublimation. And what remains, when all is forgotten, when all is forgiven is Dance. But beware, dance as an act of love, but on a modest scale, according to the humility that the world would certainly be more beautiful if all people danced, but without any claim. What he dreams of, quite simply, is a luminous ballet. "In caeruelo candes nitet orbita mundo", declaimed an unknown Lucretian poet. It is under this celestial vault which is the guarantor of peace through the brilliance of love that this project takes place. It is not even necessary to bet, but to note that thanks to the meeting of performers from parts of the world shattered by wars, Evil will here be transcended by Good, under the figure of Beauty. Fluidity, fidelity to each, the piece promises. Between rupture and continuity. But always by – love.

Far from any pretension, the intention is to sketch a dreamlike world where everything is simpler, more obvious, more beautiful. With SOL INVICTUS, Hervé Koubi wishes to stage, in the flesh, and above all in light, the fact that love is the guarantor of peace, in a world which, despite the outbreak of perpetual war, conceals a force more powerful – that of communion. And it is indeed the men and the women, as respectively actors of the reconstruction and land of welcome, who have the mission of reviving clarity in the heart of darkness and the beauty of goodness from the very valley of tears where we live in sin. And, if Heidegger recalled that "only a God can still save us", it does not matter what spiritual form the resurrection will take. Or rather, it will be multiple or it will not be. It is never other than – love, even if it means repeating itself. And love, is it nothing else than founding a “big family”? If there was only one thing left at the end of the world, at the death of the Sun, it would be dance, but in the sense of Nietzsche’s Zarathustra: "I will only believe in a god who can dance. Hence the title SOL INVICTUS. Bright piece, but also free, in the "liberated" sense of the term. A need for the lightness of Zarathustra which reminds us that 'one does not kill with anger, one kills with laughter. Come on, get on the spirit of gravity!»… Gravity which is none other than the devil. However, this intention of liberation, through the lifts launched, the flights, the wounds and their dressings by the fraternity, and the girls, today who appropriate this upward spiral, play full. Excerpts from notes of reflections by Bérengère ALFORT, Artistic Advisor

Hervé KOUBI Trained at the "school of dance", notably with Rosella Hightower, Hervé Koubi decided in 2000 to develop his choreographic project. It is first of all the Tradition, and all the oral and physical transmission that it carries within it, which will capture his interest. A dance that gathers, that unites, that makes links between people. This passion for memory, filiation, History will lead him to Algeria, in 2009, in search of his own roots. There he will be struck by urban dancers and urban practice. Since then he considers the porosity of the techniques between them as a space of experimentation which would exceed the frameworks and the technical and aesthetic affiliations. As a committed choreographer he develops numerous territorial projects with the communities. He was decorated in July 2015 with the Order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by Brigitte Lefèvre.
