C’est un havre naturel de pêche et de plaisance. C’est là qu’on trouve des buttes aux formes douces et arrondies nommées les Demoiselles. From Rivière-du-Loup to Moncton (New Brunswick), there are two possible routes: a) Through the Matapédia Valley: Take Route 132 until you get to Matapédia. Then continue on to Pointe-à-la-Croix where you can cross the bridge to New Brunswick and take Route 11 from Campbellton until you reach Bathurst, then Route 8 to Miramichi, and then again Route 11 to Shediac (Campbellton-Shediac: 286 km). At the end of August and September, the water surrounding the Islands can reach up to 18 °Celsius (63 °F), and up to 21 °Celsius in the lagoons and bays. It is the low tides (see low tides p. 115) and especially the shoals near and around the archipelago that help warm the water in the lagoons as well as the water surrounding the Islands. Constant winds greatly influence the climate of the Islands. Stronger in winter than in summer, wind speeds vary between 17 and 40 km / hr (9 to 22 knots). In summer, the prevailing winds are from the southwest, and in winter, they are from the northwest. The archipelago has everything: climate, wind, various bodies of water and more than 300 km of beautiful beaches – all it takes to be a wind, surf and water-sport lover’s paradise.

or the visitor arriving on the Îles de la Madeleine, the effect is an immediate and total change in scenery. As far as the eye can see, the islands and the dunes seem to blend, break apart, and then stretch out of sight, as if dropped by a whimsical sea. The islands look like tiny landmasses enlivened by brilliant green valleys, spectacular white sandy beaches, deep red cliffs, and the countless shades of blue that the sea and the lagoons reflect from the sky. Here one encounters a nature that is rich and fragile not only in its elements, but also in its dimensions, origins and evolution. The smooth features of the islands, the combinations of colours and the views are charming and refreshing. It is easy and very agreeable to explore the winding roads and paths of the Islands on foot, horseback, bicycle, or by automobile.

An archipelago in the gulf

islands are part of the archipelago as well: Île d’Entrée, inhabited and located 10 km east of Havre-Aubert, and Île Brion, 16 km north of Grosse Île (see area map p. 6). The main village on each island carries the same name as the Island. Since January 2002, the whole archipelago has been grouped in two municipalities: the Municipality of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Grosse-Île. There are other smaller islands and islets that are part of the Îles de la Madeleine archipelago: Rocher aux Oiseaux, Île aux Loups Marins, Île aux Cochons and Rocher du Corps Mort among others.

An archipelago in the Gulf The archipelago of the Îles de la Madeleine is located in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, or more precisely: 215 km from the Gaspé peninsula, 105 km from Prince Edward Island and 95 km from Cape Breton Island. The Islands take the shape of a half moon fishhook stretching across a distance of 65 km in a south-west/north-easterly direction. Islanders live in the Atlantic Time Zone, one hour ahead of the rest of the Province of Québec. When it is 12 noon in Montréal and the rest of the province, it is 1 pm on the Islands. The archipelago is composed of about a dozen islands, six of which are linked by long, thin, sand dunes. The names of the islands (from north to south) are: Île de la Grande Entrée and Grosse Île, Île aux Loups, Île du Havre aux Maisons, Île du Cap aux Meules, and Île du Havre Aubert. Two other

The maritime climate enjoyed by the Islands is markedly different from that of the mainland. The huge water masses around the archipelago temper the weather and create milder conditions in each season. On the Islands, winter (December to March) is mild, with the least amount of annual frost in the Province of Québec. Spring (April to June) is cool. There are no heat waves in summer (July to September), and fall (October and November) is warm; in fact, these sunny warm temperatures often last to the end of September. This engraving depicts “le ponchon” – a barrel with a sail that carried mail from the Îles de la Madeleine to Nova Scotia on February 2, 1910 when the Islands lost contact with the mainland due to a breach in the underwater telegraph cable.

100 years! The discovery of the Islands Micmac Indians poetically named the archipelago “Menagoesenog”, a word that means “islands brushed by the waves”. Well before the arrival of the first Europeans, Indians were coming to the Islands to fish and to hunt for seal and walrus. In June 1534, Jacques Cartier entered in his diary the first written report about the Islands, “Les Araynes” (from Latin “arena”, meaning "sand"). He named the first islands he came upon Île Margaulx (today Rocher aux Oiseaux) and Île Brion. He wrote in his ship’s log: “Icelle isle est rangée de sablons et beau fons et possaige à l’entour d’elle, à seix et à sept brassez. Ceste dite isle est la meilleure terre que nous ayons veu, car ung arpant d’icelle terre vault mielx que toute la Terre Neufue. Nous la trouvames plaine de beaulx arbres, prairies, champs de blé sauvaige, et de poys en fleurs, aussi espes et aussi beaulx, que je vis oncques en Bretaigne, qu’ilx sembloient y avoir esté sémé par laboureux.” “This island is very sandy, with good anchorages and passages between the islands, six to seven fathoms. It (Île Brion) has the best soil that we’ve seen, for twenty acres of this soil is worth more than all Newfoundland. This island is full of beautiful trees, prairies, fields of wild wheat, and flowering pea plants as beautiful as I’ve ever seen in Brittany, and they seem to have been planted by a ploughman’s hand.” (English transcription) In 1629, Samuel de Champlain wrote on a map, “La Magdeleine”, near the area of Île du Havre Aubert. However, it is said that the archipelago’s present name, Îles de la Madeleine, was given in honour of Madeleine Fontaine, wife of François Doublet de Honfleur, concessionaire of the Islands in 1663. Under the French Regime, the Islands were passed from hand to hand without lasting colonisation or exploitation.

Madelinots are only too familiar with the trials and tribulations of maritime life. Many tragic shipwrecks have been recorded (more than 400), and these were more often than not foreign ships swept ashore in storms while passing the Islands. Survivors often decided to make the Islands their home. Legends and extraordinary stories colour the Islanders’ oral tradition, kept alive from the time when they lived in almost total isolation. Although modern methods of communication have eased this isolation, the Madelinots still maintain their unique way of life and retain their distinctive accent. In 2006, the population

A unique francophone culture

The primary industry of the Islands is its fisheries. In order of importance, commercial fishing comprises: lobster, scallops, snow crab, fish (cod, sole, mackerel, herring, ocean perch, shark and smelt); and shellfish (mussels, baby clams and surf clams). The fishing industry dominates activities on the archipelago. Visitors will feel its pervasive influence in language, cooking, and numerous fishing ports.

The keys to the originality of Madelinot culture lie in its Acadian and Québec influences and its history of profound isolation. Once, shipwrecks and maritime commerce were its principal contacts with the outside world. This culture is still vibrant today, in the language, the arts, the economy, and in the maintenance and development of the land. This originality gives the Islands a little something extra… a difference which, when coupled with the landscape, is a “breath of fresh air”. Visitors will be surprised and charmed right from the start by the melodic intonations of the Acadian accent, the marine terminology, and archaic words from ancestral France. In the Islands, the pace of life is different, it is said that time flows to another rhythm; in the Islands… it’s not the same… The Islanders have a natural sense of hospitality, a trait that adds charm and warmth and provides a sense of relaxation and comfort for a newcomer. Madelinots are also very proud of their culture and of their special environment, and are glad to share this with others. These qualities are reflected in the services offered. For example, restaurants offer visitors wellknown local products such as lobster and other seafood. Look for the logo, “Le bon goût frais des Îles de la Madeleine” (the good fresh taste of the Islands), which identifies locally caught fish and other Island products.

Tourism is the second most important industry on the Islands. Tourism is growing steadily, attracting visitors looking for peace and quiet, in an unspoiled setting, with a unique culture and heritage. Agriculture is an important economic activity on the Islands. Sustainable agriculture, allowed the first settlers to survive, and now it is considered an expanding industry. Local produce includes eggs, cheese, beef and honey and, in season, local market gardeners offer fresh vegetables and herbs. Look for products marked “Le bon goût frais des Îles de la Madeleine” (the good fresh taste of the Islands). Salt mining is another important economic activity which brings major revenues to the local economy. This salt is used during the wintertime for de-icing roads.

Islands for all seasons The archipelago offers year-round activities. Whether you come in the warmth of the fall to enjoy the golden colours, during winter to experience the white ice fields in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, during the spring to breathe June’s fresh tonic air and eat fresh seafood, or in the summertime, without the oppressive heat, there is something for everybody. Come discover the Islands any time of the year! At the end of February and into early March, the seals arrive on the ice pack around the Islands. Observation of “white coats” (seal pups) on the ice fields by helicopter is a unique product offered on the Islands. March is also time for the traditional festival of Mi-Carême. From mid-May to mid-July, sea products are at their very best. This is also the ideal time for photography, hiking, bird watching or observing wild flowers and butterflies. Why not take advantage of the fish and lobster in May and June and come with a group of friends, your professional association, your walking club, etc.; have your annual “spring break”, a meeting, or a convention and take the opportunity to taste the first fresh lobster available on the market, “Lobster Nouveau!” The end of August is the perfect time for wind sports. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, acrobatic kite, and sailing: get your “rigging” ready and come practice your favourite sport in the superb winds of the Islands. The fall light is fantastic for photography; migratory birds stop on the Islands to rest; what could be more relaxing than a long walk on a deserted beach with a fresh breeze to clear your mind! Relaxation guaranteed! In the archipelago, hospitality has no season, and nature unveils new secrets all year round.

In 1755, the destiny of the Acadian people took a tragic turn. It was the “Grand Dérangement” (the Exile) and the Acadian population was deported all across the continent. Some managed to escape the deportation and came to the Îles de la Madeleine, where all commerce was controlled by Richard Gridley, including the walrus hunt and the Islands’ fisheries. In 1789, following the French Revolution, other families came from Saint-Pierre and Miquelon under the leadership of their priest, Jean-Batiste Allain. Together they began the true colonisation of the Islands. Under British control in 1763, the Islands were annexed to Newfoundland, until 1774 when the Québec Act annexed them to Québec. Isaac Coffin was granted the Îles de la Madeleine in 1798, and he forced the Madelinots to pay rent on lands that they had cleared with their own hands and occupied for more than 25 years. This feudal domination, along with the merchants’ exploitation of the fishermen, created a climate of misery and injustice, which explains the Islanders’ continued emigration to new lands. Emigrating Madelinots founded several villages on Québec’s Lower North Shore: Blanc-Sablon (1854), Havre Saint-Pierre, Natashquan (1855), and Sept-Îles (1872). Only in 1895 did a Québec law allow the Madelinots to buy back their lands from the grant holder. Freed from colonial oppression, they began to overcome their difficulties and work towards self-sufficiency.

Off-road bicycle paths are available in some districts (Cap-aux-Meules, L’Étang-du-Nord, Fatima and Grande-Entrée). On the maps, these paths are indicated with a pictogram in each sector. Windsurfing, swimming, deep-sea diving, fishing, discovering the beauty of the archipelago, strolls along wharves and fishing ports, boat trips, shops, restaurants… nothing is left out. It’s surprising how much there is to do! On pages 78, 79, 80, you will find a calendar of Events describing major festivals and events. The Madelinots are proud of their pure and fragile environment. They want to preserve it. The Municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine runs a composting plant, whose operation is based on three-way sorting at the source (compostable, recyclable and incinerable waste). The idea is to minimize the amount of waste that needs to be buried. We ask visitors to help by sorting their garbage while they are on holidays. Just remember the colour-code: brown for compost, green for recyclable and grey or black for combustible rubbish. Ask your host for further details on waste-control methods and pick-up schedules. They can all be visited by car on this road, which is about 100 km long from one end to the other. Entry Island, located a short distance away, is visible from most of the other islands and is a good reference point while travelling. Secondary roads circle the islands and join the main road. Some lead to magnificent scenery. Many of the smaller roads lead to spectacular sites. Caution! Back roads are not always suitable for driving. Do not hesitate to walk or cycle rather than drive.

ocated at the southern end of the archipelago, Havre Aubert is the most forested island of the group. The two main communities on Havre Aubert Island are HavreAubert and Bassin. They in turn are subdivided into townships: Portage-du-Cap and La Baie, La Montagne, L’Anse-à-la-Cabane and L’Étang-desCaps.

The first Acadians to arrive on the Islands settled in Havre-Aubert. Their influence can still be seen in local architecture, businesses, fishing operations and the Courthouse. This island has a lot to offer: beautiful natural surroundings, good restaurants, cultural activities, shops and cafés where you can sit back and relax. Havre-Aubert is a member of the Association des plus beaux villages du Québec (most beautiful villages of Québec).

Bassin, map p. 24 The coastal road takes you all the way around the west side of the Island (Chemin du Bassin). This scenic route winds its way among the houses from Portage-du-Cap to L’Étang-des-Caps, ending on a beautiful beach of the same name. There you can sit and enjoy a magnificent sunset over the cliffs and the Dune de l’Ouest (west dune). The solitary rock you can see on the horizon is known as Corps Mort (dead body). Along your route be sure to take a good look at all the beautiful traditional architecture, the typical houses with their barns and sheds, and the ecclesiastical architecture of the Bassin Church with its presbytery, outstanding for the complexity and refinement of its mansard-style roofing. At L’Anse-à-la-Cabane (shack cove) lighthouse, you can take in a splendid view of the cove, the fishing port and the Island’s rolling landscape. Havre Aubert Island has the most extensive forest of the archipelago. It is ideal for hiking and observing the forest flora. A well planned trip from the beach to the hills or vice-versa will let you take full advantage of this area’s natural beauties. Havre-Aubert is a natural fishing and yachting harbour. Here you will find the round sloping hills called Les Demoiselles (the Misses) at whose feet there is a scenic road, Chemin d’en Haut, bordered by traditional houses. Havre-Aubert, with its Courthouse and jail, was once the busiest site on the Îles de la Madeleine. The most interesting attraction in Havre-Aubert is without a doubt the Historical site at La Grave (from the French “grève”: pebbly and sandy terrain). This pebbly beach was a favourite spot for fishing and commerce and still retains its maritime flavour. Designated as an historical site by the Minister of Cultural Affairs in 1983, La Grave has preserved its original purpose as a meeting place. Its many arts and crafts shops, businesses, cafés and restaurants make La Grave THE place to go for both Islanders and visitors. Entry Island is the only inhabited island not connected to the rest of the island chain. Of Scottish and Irish descent, the Island’s 100 isolated inhabitants live to the rhythm of the sea. In the summertime, Entry Island is linked to the other islands by ferryboat for pedestrians (no cars), and during winter people come and go in a small plane. The main economic activity of the Island is fishing. Entry Island will charm you with its unspoiled nature, the shimmering colours of its landscape and its rounded hills. The summit of Big Hill, the highest point of the archipelago at 174 m, offers a truly breathtaking view. To reach Entry Island, take the ferryboat and explore the Island on foot. You may choose a random hike of a few hours or a day trip or even stay for several days. Please walk along the roadsides so that you do not disturb local traffic. You will be charmed by the tiny Anglican church, the lighthouse, the museum and the pastoral scenery. The Island has both a restaurant and a convenience store. Cap-aux-Meules, map p. 29 The name, Cap-aux-Meules (Grindstone), comes from the presence of grindstone in the hill overlooking the port. Cap-aux-Meules is the ferry’s point of arrival, where visitors get their first look at the Madelinot countryside. For the last fifty years, the concentration of businesses and services has made Cap-aux-Meules, with its main street, village-like appearance, numerous restaurants, bars and other facilities, the centre of the Islands. Despite the “urban” look of Cap-aux-Meules, nature is never very far away. A walk in Parc des Buck, at the end of the Chemin de la Mine will reveal spectacular views of the Island and its neighbours. You might also choose to walk the coast path where pedestrians and cyclists share 2 kilometres of trail leading to the lookout at the top of the cape. The port of Cap-aux-Meules bustles with activities: offshore and coastal fishing, the arrival and departure site for boats crossing to the mainland (Souris, Montréal) and the ferry boat to Entry Island. Sailing enthusiasts visiting the archipelago will find a well-equipped marina. The Canadian Coast Guard and Fisheries and Oceans Canada are nearby. From the Chemin du Quai you can reach stairs leading to a scenic lookout at the summit of the hill. Close to the harbour, boats in dry-dock await the next fishing season or undergo repairs. An enormous travel lift crane with long straps is used to handle boats. Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine and its tourist information bureau welcome visitors on arrival, year-round. L’Étang-du-Nord is located to the west of Cap-aux-Meules on Route 199 and Chemin de l’Étangdu-Nord. It is formed of several townships, each of which has its own personality. La Vernière is the “suburb” of Cap-aux-Meules with its businesses and services as well as the Hydro-Québec Power Station that opened in 1991. This diesel plant has a capacity of 70 megawatts. The scenic road along the Chemin de Gros-Cap overlooks Baie de Plaisance (pleasant bay). One kilometre further on, explore the cliffs and caves that are the distinctive feature of Parc de Gros-Cap. On returning to Route 199, don’t miss the beautiful white La Vernière wooden church. It is one of the largest wooden churches still existing in North America today. The church has been renovated and has been listed as a Québec historical monument since 1992. Farther along, the Site de La Côte is a public park where the Madelinots like to stroll around L’Étang-du-Nord fishing harbour. The focal point of the area around the cove at L’Étang-du-Nord is a magnificent sculpture. From the end of Chemin Delaney, you can see Île aux Goélands (Gull Island), an excellent site for bird watching. It is possible to walk along the coastal cliffs to Hérissé Cape, and L’Étang-du-Nord lighthouse (Chemin du Phare), where a peaceful view awaits you, particularly at the end of the day when the contours of the landscape glow in the slanting beams of the setting sun. Fatima, the newest village on the Îles de la Madeleine, includes the townships of Cap-Vert, du Grand-Ruisseau, de l’Hôpital and Les Caps. Exposed to northerly winds, the coast is indented by spectacularly steep, jagged cliffs. Forests cover a good part of the hills in the middle of the Island. The long, flat Dune du Nord Beach (north dune) was used as a landing strip for the first airplanes arriving on the archipelago until 1959. Belle Anse (pretty cove) offers a striking example of cliffs sculptured by the sea. It is easily accessible by Chemin de la Belle-Anse where you can relax at the roadside rest area. You can walk or bicycle along the cliffs and discover cliffs carved out by the sea. Beware! Everywhere on the Islands, the cliffs have overhangs that are very unstable. Do not walk close to the edge. Le Barachois nature interpretation trail is located on Chemin de la Plage de l’Hôpital. This trail provides the opportunity to walk in typical Islands wetlands, and brings you all the way to the foot of Cap-Vert. At the intersection of Chemin du Grand-Ruisseau and Chemin des Caps, don’t miss the Fatima Church, an example of modern religious architecture rendered in the shape of a shell. The simplicity of its interior decor adds to the pleasant and comfortable atmosphere of this church. Starting at Chemin des Caps, take the scenic route along Chemin Noël and then Chemin Poirier to enjoy a magnificent view of the Havre-aux-Maisons lagoon, La Pointe, and Havre aux Maisons Island. The interior of Cap aux Meules Island is a highland dotted with conical hills. The highest point in these hills is the Butte du Vent (wind hill), where in clear weather you will be treated to a spectacular view of the archipelago. Enjoy a walking tour to get there. At the foot of the hill, you can leave your car and hike the rest of the way. If you would like to explore the Island more thoroughly, take the time to hike around on some of the side roads like Chemin des Huet, Chemin des Arsène and Chemin des Buttes. against its worn red cliffs. The Îles de la Madeleine Airport is located on this Island. The dunes take up a large percentage of its area, with Dune du Sud (south dune) on one side of the island and part of Dune du Nord (north dune) on the other.

Havre-aux-Maisons, map p. 38 Havre-aux-Maisons is a lovely rural area with winding roads and scattered houses located on what many consider one of the most beautiful islands of the archipelago. This district is composed of several townships, the most typical of which are La Pointe, Pointe-Basse, Dune-du-Sud, Petite-Baie and Cap-Rouge. Near the bridge joining Havre aux Maisons Island to Cap aux Meules Island is La Pointe. With its marina, wharves, and fishing infrastructures, it has always been a business and meeting point for the fishing trade. Blue mussel farmers have their equipment and processing plant here and farm mussels in the lagoon. Just behind, across a narrow channel, we find Paquet Island, also called “Pig Island” because long ago it served as a place to raise pigs. Now the Island is home to many species of birds like terns, gulls and herons. For a view of the beautiful La Pointe site reflected in the calm waters of Petite-Baie with Cap aux Meules Island in the background, take a tour by Chez Mounette hill, along the scenic Chemin de la Petite-Baie and Chemin des Cyr. It is a wonderful place to enjoy unforgettable sunsets while Great Blue Herons quietly fish for their dinner. Keep going and you will come to the Domaine du Vieux Couvent. Built in 1915, it is the only fieldstone building in the Îles de la Madeleine. Continuing along Route 199 you might stop at Sainte-Madeleine Church. Then you can visit La grande école, located in the old St. Joseph school, a heritage building dating from1906 that was recently renovated into an art centre. A panoramic road that you absolutely must try, walking, cycling or driving, is the Chemin de la Pointe-Basse. You will get a good picture of how Madelinots traditionally divided the land:

Havre aux Maisons Island a plateau that slopes gently toward the sea dotted with brightly coloured houses. Traditional houses are well represented here. The small fishing harbour at Pointe-Basse used to be an important location for smoking herring. A few remaining smokehouses bring to life what was once a very important industry. Continue along to the end of Chemin de la Pointe-Basse, where you will come to the Chemin des Échoueries. Stop by the Alright Cape lighthouse where you will have a spectacular view over grey cliffs, all of Plaisance bay and the outline of Entry Island. Along Chemin des Montants, on the other side of the Butte Ronde hill, you will find a peaceful little valley with a few houses. This is one of the most beautiful sites in Havre-aux-Maisons. Farther on, before going down towards Dune du Sud, glance over to your left to get a good view of Les Sillons, furrows created by the unceasing movement of the dune under the influence of wind and wave. The roadside rest area at Dune-du-Sud gives access to a beautiful beach with picnic tables and toilets. Red cliffs sculpted by the sea shelter one side of the beach. Don’t hesitate to explore the holes and caves at low tide (p. 115). This is the perfect beach for family outings, as the water is calm here. On the other side is the long Dune du Sud, also named La Cormorandière, where you can walk for hours. Pointe-aux-Loups is a little township of 50 houses located on the tiniest inhabited island, Pointe aux Loups Island. Pointe-aux-Loups stands out like an oasis in the sand dunes. On the north side of the Island, there is a little fishing dock where fishermen’s boats are beached on a wooden slip until it is time to return to the sea. There is also a very beautiful beach. All along Route 199, to the east and west of Pointe-aux-Loups, two long beaches washed by crystal clear waves stretch from Fatima to Grosse-Île. The beach on the west side is Dune du Nord Beach (north dune) and the one on the east of the Island is Pointe-aux-Loups Beach. These are two of the most beautiful and popular beaches on the Islands. However, these beaches are also the most dangerous on the Islands, particularly when tides are high at the full moon or when winds are strong. Beware: very strong currents run along these beaches. Extreme caution is necessary if you swim because of strong winds and very high tides. Currents are treacherous and can pull you out into the open sea. Grosse Île Island and Grande Entrée Island hese islands contain the best preserved natural environments on the Îles de la Madeleine. The East Point Wildlife Reserve connects the Islands to one another. Also in this area are Brion Island and Rocher aux Oiseaux (Bird Rock), two uninhabited islands located north of Grosse Île Island (see map p. 6). The Anglophone inhabitants of Grosse Île Island

and the Francophones of Grande Entrée Island are primarily fishermen and fish plant workers. The salt mine, an impressively large installation located at the entrance to the Grosse-Île district, is unique in North America. Here, huge salt domes that are part of the geological base of the Islands are mined.

Grosse-Île is populated by Anglophones, mainly of Scottish descent, fishermen for the most part. The traditional life-style of the fisherman-farmer is still maintained here. The Island is very pretty, with areas like Rockhill Point where the woods slope down to the sea, and typically isolated areas like East Cape and Old-Harry. Brion Island and Rocher aux Oiseaux (bird rock) are two uninhabited islands off the coast (see regional map, p. 152). Boat excursions and guided hikes to visit Brion Island are possible on days when the weather is good. The East Point Wildlife Reserve is part of Grosse Île Island and links it to Grande Entrée Island. Beneath the Islands’ surface lie large reserves of salt. In fact, the Magdalen Islands are floating on enormous salt domes. In 1983, Mines Seleine began excavating the salt at Rocher-du-Dauphin on the dune linking Grosse Île Island to Pointe aux Loups Island. Salt is mined at a depth of 300 meters in tunnels that extend over a diameter of 1.6 km under the dune and the sea. Mines Seleine produces 1.5 million metric tons of salt annually and exports it throughout eastern Canada and the United States where it is used to de-ice roads. It is not possible for the public to visit the underground mine. The charming little church in the village of Grosse-Île is well worth the visit, as it is adorned with a splendid modern stained-glass window representing the life of fishermen. Stop a little farther on at the Le Portage observation site, where you can do some birdwatching as you stroll along the boardwalk and the shore of the lagoon. In the direction of Grande Entrée Island, a panoramic road passes by the lagoon. A little valley, named East Cape, shelters a few houses from the north wind. Grande Échouerie Beach makes up the coastline of the East Point National Wildlife Reserve. The beach seems to go on forever, and you can walk it to the end where you may see seals playing in the water. The entrance to the beach is located at Old-Harry. Grande Échouerie Beach offers services for the whole family: parking ($), a crafts and souvenir shop, showers and toilets, picnic tables and a children’s playground. Be very careful if you swim, especially if the wind is strong. The waves can be very large and sea currents are extremely dangerous.

The endless beach at Grande Échouerie and the East Point National Wildlife Reserve.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Old-Harry was the site of the walrus hunt, which brought the first Europeans (Basques) to the Islands. The “échoueries” (haulout sites) are the areas where the walruses, piled one upon the other, would lie in the sun. Although they were huge, almost as big as cows, these animals were agile enough to use their tusks to help them climb up the rocks. Walrus were slaughtered in Old-Harry for the oil in the animal’s thick layer of fat. Seacow road is said to be the path to the slaughtering grounds. The hunt was so intensive that in 1799 the whole herd of walrus was destroyed, and they have now completely vanished from the Islands. Continuing along Route 199 towards Grande-Entrée, you will come to an old school house built in 1921 that is now the centre of a historical exhibit established by the Council of Anglophone Magdalen Islanders (Little Red School Museum (C.A.M.I.)). Grande Entrée Island was the last of the Islands to be settled. Its colonization dates back to the 1870’s, and since then its fishing port has been a vital part of Island life. Designated as Québec’s Lobster Capital in 1994, Grande-Entrée has over 100 lobster-fishing boats that bring in more than half of the Islands’ total annual catch. Route 199 ends at the wharf: this is Pointe de la Grande-Entrée (Grande-Entrée Point). Here you have a charming fishing port packed with brightly coloured boats. Blue mussels are farmed in the bay at Grande-Entrée as well as in Havre-aux-Maisons. Chemin Pealy leads to the western extremity of Grande Entrée Island and illustrates the traditional division of land: widely-spaced houses centered on open fields. Take a walk to Boudreau Island, one of the most beautiful views you will see in the Magdalen Islands. Visit the Bassin aux Huîtres and explore its secret beaches and footpaths. You can reach it by following Chemin du Bassin Ouest. Landscape – The best way to explore the countryside is to travel through it. Wonderful vistas and spectacular sights are scattered throughout the region. Panoramic routes (in mauve on each of the sector maps) are a good way to enjoy much of the beautiful scenery that the Islands have to offer. Going out to explore on foot, by bicycle, car or kayak, is another way to discover the varied flora and fauna, charming countryside and calm lagoons. You may simply wish to go berry picking instead of swimming. A palette of wonderful colours brings the landscape to life, illuminating the variety of its vegetation and landforms. These rich colours come from the archipelago’s three main elements: the Islands’ rock core (islets and islands), the sand dunes, and the waters (interior bays, lagoons, and the sea).

At the end of February and beginning of March, Harp Seals come to give birth on ice fields around the Îles de la Madeleine. Females feed their youngs, the "white coats" (blanchons in French), for 3 to 4 weeks. Helicopter observation tours to the ice pack are available.

The islands and islets of the archipelago are in fact the visible part of a shoal (a type of underwater plateau) on which the islands rest. The islands, connected by sand dunes, make up the archipelago. Each island is a rocky, mountainous mass with bare, round hills, which the inhabitants call buttes. The hills are interspersed with valleys that form plateaus gently sloping toward the sea. The inhabitants, the Madelinots, have established their homes and farms near these areas.

Mi-Carême This is an important traditional festival celebrated mostly in the village of Fatima. This ancestral religious celebration gave Christians a break halfway through Lent. It is celebrated over three days with music and original costumes.

The Islands

Note: Information was compiled in fall 2009. Details are subject to change without notice. Other events are scheduled during the year which may not be listed above. The program of cultural events is published every year in June and is available at the Tourist Information Office.

There are two types of rock in the cliffs on the Magdalens: gray sandstone and red sandstone. The gray sandstone is more resistant to erosion and is found in some of the highest landforms on the southern Islands, Entry Island, Havre Aubert, Cap aux Meules and Havre aux Maisons. These are often volcanic mounds containing argillaceous sedimentary rocks, limestone and gypsum. The red sandstone cliffs take spectacular shapes: columns, swags, towers, corbels, funnels, sawteeth, sinkholes and potholes offer a constant vision of wonder to the eye. This is sedimentary rock, 99% quartz covered with a thin layer of iron oxide, and it is this latter which gives the stone its reddish colour. The rock is highly friable, and suffers greatly from erosion by wind and waves, particularly in the fall when strong winds combine with high tides. Spring thaw also breaks down the stone of these cliffs. Created by the incessant battle between the sea and the land, visual wonders await the eye of the visitor all along the cliffs, in Belle Anse, Fatima, the Dune du Sud in Havre-aux-Maisons and along Old-Harry on Grosse-Île and all the way out to Grande-Entrée.

The Sand Dunes Storm waves and currents are constantly carrying new material onto the beaches: sand, rocks, seaweed, marine animals, etc. These materials enrich the soil and make it possible for some pioneer plants (sea rocket, sea chickweed) to establish themselves on the backshore; once established, these plants help block the wind and promote formation of what are called “buttereaux” in the Islands, coastal dunes, mobile dunes. Decomposition of pioneer plants helps other plants such as beach grass to survive. Beach grass is critical to the ecological balance of the archipelago. Its rhizomes (underground stems) hold down the sand on the dunes. However, this plant is extremely sensitive to treading. Once the sand is firmly settled among the roots of the beach grass, the dune will be colonized by a wider range of plant life and will support a greater density of population. These plants complete the stabilization of the dune and turn it from a mobile dune into a fixed dune. Sandspits represent over 60% of the Islands’ coastline, a total area of more than 17,200 acres. This is how dunes and furrows (Sillons) are formed, and you can see a perfect example of these formations at Dune du Sud. Here you see the true individuality of the Madelinot landscape: golden dunes whose maritime flora differ in many ways from those on the mainland and are not found in such concentrations anywhere else in Québec.

Beware: Never walk close to the edge of the cliffs, because the eroded areas are not always visible and they can be extremely dangerous. Stay at least 3 metres away from the edge, especially when you see this sign.

Winter does not really come to the Islands until January.When the snow starts to fall, the Gulf of St. Lawrence begins to freeze over. Exploring the winter landscape is like rediscovering the archipelago in a completely different guise.

Features of the Region

Flora – The most typical flora of the Islands is found on the dunes. The forests, often stunted by the climate, are home to a variety of plants including berries, which may be found while hiking. Many different environments can be observed between the dunes and the middle of the Islands, including beaches, peat bogs, salt marshes, and fields. Each varies according to its soil composition, humidity and salinity, the slope of the land and its microclimate. Different sectors contain different species of vegetation. One of these is peat moss, a plant whose stem grows from year to year but whose roots decompose, allowing the peat bog to develop. There are also two insectivorous plants, the Pitcher Plant and the Sundew Plant. The dunes are covered by dune grass (Marram grass), a thick grass that holds the sand down on the dune. The beautiful Greater Blue Flag sometimes grows in freshwater marshes. Since dunes cover 30% of the total land area in the Îles de la Madeleine, the most characteristic flora in the archipelago appears in the dune environment. The dunes are covered with beach grass, the most important plant in the archipelago's ecology, since it is essential to the stabilization of the dunes. Its rhizomes fix the sand in the dunes, preventing it from invading and filling up habitats located behind the dunes such as lagoons and ponds. Other plants also grow in the dunes: seabeach sandwort, beach pea, bayberry, black crowberry, starflower, not to mention the magnificent poverty grass, one of the rarest plants in Québec, which is found in the Îles de la Madeleine. In salt meadows and marshes, there are many species of grasses such as carex, bulrushes and spartina. Other species present in this environment: Baltic rush, black sandwort, glasswort, and marsh rosemary. Peat bogs, ponds and freshwater marshes are home to several species: sphagnum moss, a plant whose stems grow upward year after year while the base decomposes slowly, creating the peat bog. Peat bogs are a perfect environment for our two carnivorous plants: the pitcher plant and the dew plant, as well as the grass-pink orchid and the hare's tail. Dense colonies of gorgeous blue flag grow in freshwater marshes, as do the buckbean, the giant bur reed, the marsh cinquefoil and the sheep laurel. The forested area is not large, but it does offer many interesting plants. Wild berries may be found in some places but be careful not to go on private land without permission:

Fauna – Even though the archipelago is not large, it is home to many species of birds and mammals. Due to their location in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Îles de la Madeleine are a favourite site for birds. The most important of the marine mammals, both because of its numbers and its importance, is the seal. Four different species of seal can be found around the Îles de la Madeleine. There was a time when walrus was also common, but they disappeared long ago (1799). Whales can sometimes be observed offshore, although they are rather rare.

The Gray Seal and the Harbor Seal Gray Seals live in the temperate waters along the shores, near rocky islets and sand banks. Their large size makes them easy to spot (adults weigh 275 kg on average). Other identifying marks include widely spaced nostrils in the shape of a "W", dark color, black head and rather long muzzle. Because of its relatively long nose, this species is often called "horsehead". Most of the seals you will see around the Islands in summer are of this type. The population of Gray Seals is on the increase in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Harbor Seal is a much smaller animal. Average adults weigh in at around 90 kg and are much lighter in color than the Gray Seal. Their nose is shorter, their nostrils closer together in the shape of a "V". Harbor Seals spend hours lying on sandbanks, rocks and reefs which appear with the ebbing tide. When the tide comes in again, these seals go out to hunt. This species is currently under observation, as it is declining in most places along the shores of the St. Lawrence. Gray Seals and Harbor Seals can be observed in their natural habitat at the east end of Brion Island, at the end of the Grande Échouerie Beach in Grosse-Île, at Corps Mort Rock and on the Dune du Sud Beach, just opposite the Grande-Entrée fishing port. Tour organizers offer zodiac tours observing seals and snorkeling among the seal herd which lives near Corps Mort Rock or Brion Island and Bird Rock. This is a wonderful, exciting experience, but can only be experienced in good weather. For the less adventurous, boat tours are also available. (see Nature and Outdoor Activities, Nautical Excursions section, p.103).

• Wild strawberries: last two weeks in July, in fields and at the edge of forests. • Raspberries: end of July and beginning of August, in clearings and in wooded areas. • Blueberries: August, on the dunes and in the woods. • Cranberries: end of September, at the edges of ponds and in damp fields. Exploring these areas for botanical purposes requires the services of a knowledgeable guide. On the other hand, a book like “Plantes Sauvages du bord de la mer” from the Groupe Fleurbec can be of great help.

• East Point National Wildlife Reserve (Grosse Île Island): marshes, ponds and beaches. • Havre aux Basques Bay (Havre Aubert Island): fields and salt marshes. Take the Chemin de la Dune-de-l’Ouest or Chemin de la Pointe-des-Canots. • Dune du Sud (Havre aux Maisons Island): peat bogs in the area of Les Sillons (furrows) and along the dune to Grande-Entrée. Caution, peat bogs are very wet so bring along your rubber boots! • The Mountain (Havre Aubert Island): coniferous forest and forest flora.

In summer, fields, meadows, even the roadsides are ablaze with wildflowers of all kinds. Some of the plants you can expect to see: ox-eye daisy, buttercup, red clover, white clover, alsike clover, rabbit-foot clover (Trifolium arvense), bird vetch, yellow melilot, Canada goldenrod, pearly everlasting, fireweed, foxtail barley.

When two parallel dunes meet, they trap water between them and create a lagoon connected to the sea by narrow channels. These natural basins have some very important ecological functions. Their location, the water exchange, and the shallow depths make the lagoons an excellent habitat for the growth and reproduction of lobster, herring, smelt, and other marine species. The warm, calm waters of the lagoons are also safe areas to enjoy windsurfing. In addition, the banks of the lagoons shelter large populations of marine and coastal fowl.

The Harp Seal is an Arctic species which migrates to the coast of Newfoundland and the Îles de la Madeleine around the end of December. Adults have gray fur marked with wide black bands running down each side of the body and meeting over the back. The Harp Seal’s head is black. Every year at the beginning of March, hundreds of thousands of Harp Seals come to the ice floes around the Islands when it is time for the birth of their youngs, which are called “whitecoats”.

The whitecoat’s fur is long and white. Helicopter excursions to observe whitecoats in their natural habitat on the ice floes are available in the Îles de la Madeleine (p. 109). The sight of this immense herd spread out over the endless fields of ice and snow is truly awe-inspiring. Discover the Islands in their winter garb. Features of the Region The Harp Seal (cont.) For the first two weeks of their life, baby seals grow at an amazing rate, thanks to the fact that their mothers’ milk is 40% fat. During this period, their lovely white coat peels off and their appearance gives rise to another nickname,“guenilloux”, or “ragged-jacket”. The baby is weaned approximately two weeks after birth and his mother leaves him on the ice to go off and mate. Once he has finished shedding his baby coat, the young seal is called a “beater”. His fur is now silvery and mottled with darker patches. For the Madelinots, the arrival of the seal herd signals the beginning of the hunt, time to go out on the ice. The seal hunt is an ancient tradition with the Island people. Over the last few years, however, the hunt has been the target of a campaign by anti-hunting environmentalist groups, and most of the markets have disappeared. Hunters can no longer sell fur seal pelts, so there has been much less hunting since the 80s. As of 1983, killing whitecoats is illegal, forcing many hunters to terminate their subsistence activities. The seal hunt is a sure sign of the end of the winter and the start of maritime and fishing activities for the Madelinots. Once the herd (“mouvée”) is sighted offshore, preparations for the hunt begin. At daybreak and with favourable winds, squads of five or six hunters begin an arduous day of work. Hauling their flats (small boats called “canottes”), the hunters must often walk ten kilometres or more on the ice before reaching the herd. Once the hunt is finished and the pelts and carcasses are loaded onto the flats, the hunters retrace their path to their distant starting point. The decline of the fur trade put an end to the commercial hunt. Hunting now takes place on an individual basis only. The resulting increased size of the seal herd is causing fears for fish stocks, on which the seals feed.

Birds Approximately 200 species of nesting, migratory, visiting, wintering, and indigenous birds live on or pass through the Islands. It is also possible to observe many passerines and some birds of prey. Wildfowl, sea birds and shore birds represent the majority of bird species on the Îles de la Madeleine. Many of the nesting birds live in colonies: the northern gannet, the blacklegged kittiwake, the great blue heron, the double-crested shag, the thick-billed murre, the atlantic puffin, the razorbill, etc. The Piping Plover, an endangered species, nests on beaches. It is found nowhere else in the Province of Québec except here in the Islands. You should avoid their nesting grounds (identified by signs) between May 1st and August 15. Many of the migratory birds are coastal species: Sandpipers, Plovers, Yellowlegs, Turnstones, the Whimbrel and the Hudsonian Godwit. There are only about 25 resident species on the Islands, from the common crow to the rare snowy owl. Note that the number of individual species reaches its maximum at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn when migratory birds stop on the Islands. There is also quite an impressive list of visiting species.

The Îles de la Madeleine sit on an underwater ridge in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Because of this, the waters around the Islands are fairly shallow and whale sightings are infrequent near the shore. It is possible, however, to see whales occasionally from the C.T.M.A ferry or from cruise ships.

Land Mammals Compared to other regions in Québec, the Islands have few species of land mammals. There are only a few small indigenous mammals such as the red fox, the deer mouse, the Norway rat and the meadow vole. Red squirrels were introduced on the archipelago at the end of the 70s, and they have adapted extremely well to their new environment. A recent population density study shows a higher density of squirrels per square kilometre, probably because there are no predators. Note that this species can be found only on the Islands of Havre Aubert, Cap aux Meules and Havre aux Maisons. An attempt was made to introduce the snowshoe hare, but the population was decimated. At the beginning of the 90s, a project was undertaken to reintroduce hares on the Island of Havre Aubert. At present, a few do still survive on Havre Aubert and Cap aux Meules Island, but a 2002 study shows that their population is declining. An experiment with a mink farm was also carried out in the past on the Island of Havre Aubert. A few individuals escaped the farm and there is now a small resident population in the ponds around the lagoon at Havre aux Basques.

The best sites for bird watching are generally the areas around marshes and ponds in tidal zones and dunes or on the islands and islets just off shore: • La Martinique, between Dune de l’Ouest (Chemin Coulombe) and La Martinique Beach (along Route 199). • East Point National Wildlife Reserve on Échouerie and Marais salés trails. Île aux Goélands in L’Étang-du-Nord (Chemin Delaney), Île aux Cochons (near the Havre-aux-Maisons’ marina), Île Rouge (close to the bridge linking Cap aux Meules and Havre aux Maisons Islands) are interesting sites. Bird Rock, Brion Island and Entry Island are some of the finest marine bird colony observation sites. Parc des Buck’s trails are also excellent places to observe woodland birds. Don’t forget to bring along a bird watching book, a map of the Islands and a pair of binoculars!

This is also an Arctic species, living mainly in the waters between Greenland and the European continent. These seals occasionally migrate around the archipelago to give birth on the ice pack. An adult male weighs an average of 300 kg and is easily identified by his blue-gray color and his size. The male has an impressive nasal appendage as well as a hood on his head that he can blow up like a balloon, doubling the volume of his head and giving him a fierce and most impressive appearance. The young of this species are called bluebacks because of their color. It is very dangerous to approach young Hooded Seals on the ice pack because the adults are extremely aggressive at this stage of their reproductive cycle. Red fox

Fishing Industry – Fishing is the principal activity on the Îles de la Madeleine. It supports the economy and shapes the Islanders’ way of life. For the visitor, fishing is a subject of curiosity, a reason to explore. Take a walk around the many wharves, where you can sometimes enjoy a pleasant chat with the fishermen. Early in the morning, the wharves bustle with activity. What a pleasure it is to breathe the fresh salt sea air at the fishing ports when most people are still sleeping!

Molluscs Scallops The “scallop” most people eat is actually the mollusc’s adductor muscle. However, the farming methods used by Culti-mer in the Îles de la Madeleine now allow them to market these shellfish whole from the beginning of June to the end of December. The farming process begins with putting out collectors offshore from the Islands in October so that juvenile scallops (spats) drifting with the currents can attach themselves to them. After one year at sea, the collectors are brought back to the plant, where the scallops are sorted and suspended in the Havre aux Maisons lagoon. The temperate lagoon environment is rich in nutrients and encourages optimal growth. The suspension technique varies with the grow-out stage (Chinese lanterns, ear hanging, pearl nets). It takes from one to four years of growth in suspension for the spats to reach marketable size, depending on the type of product. Don’t pass up the chance to taste the Islands’ farmed scallops, available directly from the scallop farm, and also in the best restaurants and fish shops.

For seafood lovers, fish markets and fish plant outlets offer a variety of fish and seafood (see the Regional Delights section, p. 100).

Here is a brief description of the different types of fishing common to the Islands and the products of the fish and seafood (crustaceans and shellfish) industry.

Shellfish

Every year in May, fishermen set their lobster traps off the coast. The lobster season, which usually runs for nine weeks starting on the Monday closest to May 6th, is strictly regulated. In the last decades, effective conservation measures were put in place in collaboration with the lobster fishermen themselves. A total of 325 fishing licenses are issued for the Islands, and the crew of each boat, which is usually composed of 2 or 3 people, can set a specified number of traps identified by a tag issued by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. That number was 300 per permit in 2004 and will be diminished by three per year until they reach a total of 270 traps per license. Spawning female lobsters and lobsters inferior to regulation size must be set free. The total lobster catch reaches nearly 2.27 million kilograms yearly. Lobster fishermen leave port early in the morning to reach the bottoms where they haul their traps by 5 o’clock am. They empty their traps, then they re-bait them and return them to the water. With their catch aboard, the fishermen return to their homeports in the afternoon to prepare for the next fishing day.

This big deep-sea shellfish has been fished commercially in the Islands for many years. Fishermen go more than 40 km west/southwest of the Islands in 20-metre (65 feet) boats to set large traps. The snow crab lives in very deep water, 45 to 275 metres. It is fished in April or May as soon as the ice is gone from the Gulf and the season ends when fishing quotas have been attained. Fresh snow crab can be bought at many seafood markets and counters as well as in most restaurants.

Clams and other mollusc species are also harvested on the shores of lagoons. Even though shellfish digging is authorized almost anywhere in the Islands, it is possible that in some areas, and at certain periods of the year, shellfish consumption can be hazardous. A new regulation, in effect since 2004, permits harvesting of 300 clams measuring 51 mm and more (2 inches) per day per person. An experimental farming operation has been started at Cap Vert Bay in Fatima. This business has not yet reached the stage where the product can be commercialized, but it is possible to find clams for sale in the different fish and food markets on the Îles de la Madeleine.

Since lobster fishing is so physically demanding, visitors should understand that it is difficult to give tours on a real lobster fishing boat. Boats leave very early in the morning and come back to the harbour only late in the afternoon. However, fishing interpretation trips are available and you can taste lobster in many places! You can also participate in the lively activities on the opening day of the lobster fishing season in May (see Calendar of Events, p. 78). Attention! Visitors are advised that they may not fish for lobster at any time of the year, under penalty of law.

The technique used for farming mussels is rather simple. Mussel farmers put collectors into the water to attract and fix young mussels in compact groups. The collectors are put into the water in June and are taken out in September. By this time, the mussels are between 15 and 25 mm (.5 to 1 inch) long. They are then placed in growing rolls made from netted sacks and suspended in lagoons for one year before reaching commercial size (50 mm or 2 inches). Fresh mussels can be purchased in fish shops all over the Islands as well as in the grocery stores. Prepared mussels are also available, vacuum packed, canned or in chowder. Many restaurants offer mussels on their menu during the season.

The blue mussel was not exploited very much on a commercial basis because there was no market for it. Since the spring of 1984, the blue mussel has been cultivated locally in the Islands’ lagoons to meet the demands of a new market. The farmed mussel has many obvious advantages in quality compared to the wild mussel. Suspended in water while it grows, the mussel contains neither sand nor small bits of gravel, allowing it to grow faster and offering two to three times more meat than the wild mussel.

Fish Herring This pelagic species, when salted and smoked in huge smokehouses, was once the pride and joy of the Madelinots. Then, for a time, herring was used almost exclusively as a mash or bait in lobster traps. Increasing stocks over the last few years have revitalized the smoking industry in the Islands. We would like to think that this recovery is only the beginning, heralding the return of certain species, like cod, that have traditionally filled our fishermen’s nets. At present there is a cottage-industry old-time smokehouse, Le Fumoir d’Antan (p. 101), that markets smoked herring in different formats. Make it a point during your visit to the Islands to savour these local delicacies.

Mackerel

Ocean Perch, Cod, Flounder, and Other Species These species of bottom feeders were once considered the main stocks of the fishing industry in the archipelago, but they have been over-fished and compromised by other factors, some of which are difficult to identify. Although some limited cod fishing was again permitted in 1997, the cod fishery was the object of a new moratorium for a year in 2003. Since the end of the second moratorium, restricted commercial fishing is permitted in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and in fact, it is now a complementary fishery. Recreational fishing is generally authorized a few weeks per year, with a limit of 5 fish per person, for a maximum of 15 fish per boat, all groundfish species included, except for the Atlantic halibut, which must be put back into the water. To find out more about the opening dates and conditions, you must contact the Fisheries and Oceans local office at 418 986-2095. Other groundfish species like Atlantic halibut, American plaice, yellowtail flounder and flounder are all commercially fished around the Islands.

The houses on the Islands have become an important attraction with their colours and originality, but above all else for the way their location respects the landforms and natural habitats. They are naturally part of the territory.1 Domestic architecture: houses, barns and “baraques” (hay sheds) are quite simple and painted in a variety of bright colours. The Acadian and French origins of many of the Islanders as well as some influence from New England can be seen in the architecture of their homes. Several details are typical of the traditional home: the small enclosed porch, corbel, veranda, painted or stained cedar shingles. There are many fine examples of traditional houses throughout the Islands. The whole of the Historical site at La Grave constitutes without doubt a privileged heritage site where the traditional architecture is showcased. transformed. Its designation as a historical site is an initiative that has encouraged other similar interventions such as the reconstitution of Anse de L’Étang-du-Nord, largely inspired by the traditional architecture of the Islands, or the beautification project along the Rue Principale (Main Street) in Cap-aux-Meules. Finally, there is the 10-year-old “Mérite architectural” (architectural merit contest), which awards prizes each two years to individuals and organizations that endeavour to protect and promote the traditional architecture of the Islands.

Mackerel is a pelagic species found in large schools off the coast around the Islands at the end of the summer. Mackerel is very sensitive to water temperature. Over the last few years, the water around the Islands has been warmer, with the result that the catches have diminished. The mackerel has moved more towards the north of the Gulf. You can fish mackerel by hand line from all the Islands’ ports until the middle of fall or from boats on guided day-trip excursions.

Around the Îles de la Madeleine, six lighthouses still project their life-saving beams out to sea. For many years, they were a vital link for thousands of vessels travelling around the archipelago’s treacherous coast and for the local population whose livelihood was dependent on the sea. Their geometry and the various materials employed in their construction give an excellent picture of the evolution of lighthouses in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Musée de la Mer and other cultural and heritage centres exhibit their collections of objects, photographs and archives illustrating the history of the Islands and the varied origins of the Madelinots. See Museums and Interpretation Centres section, p. 92.

The "baraque" (shed) is a little square barn with a sliding roof controlled by a pulley system that is used to protect hay from bad weather. Many farmers still use them, especially on Havre Aubert Island. The most distinctive of all fishing industry buildings is the smokehouse. These structures can still be seen near some fishing ports. The best example is located in Pointe-Basse harbour in Havre-aux-Maisons. Unoccupied for a long time, this smokehouse has been renovated to give new life to an activity that was so important barely thirty years ago. Culture and Heritage Religious Heritage Churches are traditionally made of wood, which is vulnerable to fire. Nevertheless, many examples of this traditional architecture remain and it is well worth while to take the time to visit our churches.

This is the oldest architectural church and presbytery on the Islands. The beautiful church in Bassin with its two imposing square towers was built in 1939 to replace the old church, which was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1936. Behind it, we find the presbytery with its typical mansard roofing.

Located in the oldest parish in the Islands, founded in 1793, the church we see today was actually built in 1962. Its interior boasts five magnificent tapestries by artist Rosaire Vigneault. The church, with its chapel on the hill of the cross, is a most interesting religious site, and one of which all Acadians are rightfully proud.

of Saint-Pierre in La Vernière 3 Church 1329, chemin de La Vernière First built in 1876 and now classified as a historical monument, this is the second largest wooden church in North America. It was struck several times by lightning: first in 1900, then in 1945, 1947 and 1980. The wood used in its construction was retrieved from shipwrecks and had to be blessed before the building could be rebuilt. It is an important element of the Madelinot heritage.

Built in 1916 by Symond Taker and Colin Turnbull, the church was constructed using wood from a shipwreck. In 1988, the “Gates to Infinity” door was built at the church entrance. This door is a memorial to Aaron Clarke, a resident of Old-Harry, who was swept out to sea when he tried to help some swimmers.

The Veterans’ Museum is situated beside the Memorial Park at Old-Harry. It contains artefacts, photos and information pertaining to the Magdalen Islands War Veterans.
