W
hether you enjoy bourbon or know someone that Tom Fisher does, it is in our blood as Contributor Kentuckians. The veins that have been flowing from the Bardstown region will soon be making a shorter journey. I'm not at all suggesting hooking up an IV to a bourbon bottle. No, I'm talking about CMDK of Owensboro. You might have last known it as the Charles Medley Distillery. It is now under the new ownership of Angostura, LTD of Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Angosutra may sound familiar to you because you've seen or tasted Angostura Aromatic Bitters. It no surprise to us at BourbonBlog. com that a company in the southern Caribbean wants a piece of the “bourbon action.” We cover stories that make Kentucky and the South what it is especially with regard to bourbon whiskey. Since our beginning several years back, we have seen bourbon become increasingly popular not just in the USA, but all over the world. Typically, there is travel involved in capturing our stories because many bourbon events happen between Louisville and Bardstown. On this occasion, the story is our backyard. Just down West 2nd Street and turn on North Ewing Road in Owensboro, for those of you who may not remember. Please note that CMDK is not open to the public yet, that was simply reference point. Another reference point is BourbonBlog.com where you can watch the story about CMDK, after you read tthis article. “CMDK will be the westernmost point on the bourbon trail,” says Barbara Poynter, President of Oakwood Consulting and Event •6•
Coordinator for CMDK's Debut Party. Since October of 2008, renovation has been underway to bring this distillery back to life. After BourbonBlog.com is invited to the CMDK's Debut Party, I decide to film the distillery in the daylight and I head down the road. When I arrive, a guard waits at the security checkpoint and welcomes me, ensuring that I am on the guest list. Security is rather tight as someone must be overseeing the entrance off Distillery Road. At least eighty contracted workers are on the job in some fashion every day to make the rebirth of CMDK a reality. Driving by the rickhouses where the bourbon will be stored, I'm aware that I'm stepping into the past while also having a glimpse into the not so distant future. My grandmother has told me of a time when bourbon was much more visible around Owensboro. The trucks passing with the leftover mash driving by her house to give the excess to community farmers as feed. She declares, “It stunk.” She remembers rows of bourbon distilleries in this area of Owensboro at that time. We're not talking about looking back that far in our history. The original distillery on this same piece of land in started in 1885 as the old Green River Distillery. It produced bourbon until it burned in August of 1918. Shortly after, prohibition came slowing down any thoughts of bringing it back. After that, the distillery was rebuilt around the 1940 and The Medley brothers ran it all the way until the Nineties. Since around 1993, this great slice of Kentucky history has stood idle in Owensboro. It has been whispering, “Will someone please put bourbon www.News4UOwensboro.com • Owensboro April 2009

back in me?” It took around sixteen years after the original fire for the first comeback. Now sixteen years after that whisper, Angostura is making it happen. I think that whisper became a screaming obvious question our rum and bitter producing friends heard down at Angostura. “Like a phoenix, we're coming back out of the ashes and restoring it and coming back into bourbon production,” says Derek Schneider, Plant Manager CMDK. Schneider and his team are working hard every day. I appreciate that he is taking a few minutes away from his work to even give a tour and show me more. “Sometimes I feel like Frankenstein. This is a monster that has been dead for years and I'm bringing it back to life,” laughs Schneider. Schneider explains that CMDK has obtained the old mash build and the old yeast from the Medley family that date back to1812. The recipe and the yeast have gone back through the years. “This will give us the true and tried Kentucky bourbon.” Bourbons can vary greatly in taste, complexity and number of years aged, so I am curious what will CMDK's signature will be? “We will be aging for different tastes and aging them accordingly. We will capture the taste of Owensboro. The marketing, branding and naming of the unique products is still being decided," says Schneider. I'm interviewing Derek Schneider next to the remains of the old smokestack. While some remains are kept merely for the visual, I want to see the rickhouses, or warehouses as some call them, where the bourbon will be stored. Schneider and Barbara Poynter take me to Warehouse A. If you've toured Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace or any other distillery, you know what it feels like to walk into a warehouse full of barrels. This one is empty of barrels. Although given a ghost town like feel, the aroma of bourbon remains present after 16 years. The scent of the wood is luscious. The warehouse itself is beautiful and has insulation process that few other, if any, rickhouses possess. For the best explanation of how the holes, watch the complete CMDK video on www.BourbonBlog. com When this rickhouse is full, around 20,000 barrels will be its maximum capacity. When fully refurbished, CMDK can produce 2,000,000 proof gallons per year at full capacity among their ten warehouses. They will aim for around 40% of that the first year. “We can fill a whole warehouse in half a year,” says Schneider. “Bourbon will begin to be placed in the warehouses to age in the fourth quarter of 2009. That is our current target. The one thing I have learned is that sometimes these things take longer than we think.” Several days later, I return to CMDK for their Debut Party. for Rotary Club of Owensboro. Unlike some industries where competition is fierce, there is a spirit of cooperation, encouragement and “lending a helping hand” by the other established bourbon distilleries. This approach is referred to by some business experts as, “coopetition.” Tonight, the “coopetition” is being enjoyed in a bourbon tasting whereby other bourbon brands have brought their products to Owensboro to sample. Four Roses, Maker's Mark, Evan Williams, Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, and our other bourbon friends of the Kentucky Distillers' Association pour us tastes before we enjoy a dinner by Moonlite Bar-B-Q. Actually, the bourbon continues to flow even as we are eating. By the way, are you wishing you had been here for the party? What is even better (or just a good) as than the Moonlite, the bourbon and the night is that this event will be helping those in need. “We have a foundation that gives around 30 to 40 thousand dollars year nationally and internationally. One of the projects we are proud of is making water better Uganda. In these remote part of Africa, kids drank it out of ditches,” says Tom Smith, President of Rotary Club of Owensboro. With that thought, I remember Derek Schneider telling me that a large reason why this distillery was built on this land back in the 1800s is due to the fact that there is the strong limestone aquifer underneath. While others struggle to find clean water, we're blessed to have the ability to pick the type of water that we'll make our bourbon with. Bourbon is an industry just like Kentucky, full of people that care about helping others. Well done, CMDK! We are looking forward to tasting Owensboro. The Trip to Thailand – Through His Mother’s Eyes

hen News4U asked me to write an update about Trey and our trip to Thailand, my first thought was, “How do I put 33 days in a Third World country, a life-changing experience, and a medical miracle into one short article?” I urge you to read our daily blogs on www. helpgivetreysight.com for a little more insight into our trip. “It’s 8:00a.m. in the Kingdom of Thailand,” the radio reported as we pulled into a government hospital to Katie O’Bryan test Trey’s vision – or lack there of. After his first SC (stem Contributor cell) injection the test revealed he could see the slightest bit of light. That was the best news we had heard since we found out about the SC treatment. And after delayed flights and missing the appointment for the first treatment, causing us to have to stay an extra week, we were ready for some good news. After all the doctors had told us to give up on a treatment for Trey, and just praying everyday for a miracle we finally had one! If he could see some light after the first treatment what was he going to be able to see after the sixth? Over the next month our schedule was pretty routine. We were woken at 7:00 a.m. by housekeeping; at 8:00 a.m. one breakfast tray was brought in and Weldon, Trey’s father, and I usually just shared the fruit (the rest of it just wasn’t our idea of breakfast). At 9:00 a.m. we took Trey to physical therapy for an hour and then we enjoyed a break from 10:00 – 2:00. This left time for us to see some sights and eat some McDonald’s or KFC. Between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Dr. Wit would come give Trey acupuncture, and twice a week during this time frame we would have a doctors’ team visit. Then we would usually order Subway or pizza and have it delivered to the hospital room. On SC days they would bring Trey little baby scrubs at 6:00 p.m. We would change him and take him to the OR at 7:00. There, they gassed him and gave him the injection. His first and last ones were given to him through an IV and the four in between were given to him through his spine. He was such a little trooper and I’m so lucky he never had any of the complications that sometimes go along with the injections. On the weekends we had a little more flexibility to venture out into Bangkok. It would take a whole book to share all those experiences, but I am grateful that we did get to learn about the culture and it made me appreciate the United States that much more. I loved Thailand and the people there. Thai people are friendly, helpful and mild-mannered but communication was sometimes a problem. We always found that a smile is universal and calmed any tension built by a confusing tone. The day before Trey’s last injection, we returned to the government hospital one last uncomfortable time. (This hospital gave “Third World” a new meaning.) They repeated the same test on him to see if there was any improvement. A couple hours later with our hearts pounding waiting for the results, the two ladies that seemed to understand exactly how we felt without
understanding a word that we said....beamingly announced in the best English they could muster, “The number go up!” I can’t put into words – then or now – what my heart felt at that moment. It was working! All the hard work that we all put into raising the money, all the money that people donated during the hardest economic crisis of our lifetime was working. And all the emotion and stress involved with Trey’s journey, this made it all worth it. He still has a long way to go, and he is still legally blind, but research has revealed it take up to six months before you start seeing results and the stem grows for an entire year. He is keeping his eyes up more and they don’t wander as much as they did before. He is pulling himself up now and though he is not crawling like he should be, but he is finally creeping. Maybe he will walk before he crawls. But if he is already improving now, I can’t wait to see what he is doing in six months. So what’s next? The doctors in Thailand want him to come back for a second round of treatment in a year but as you can imagine this is not something we can afford to do every year, although we do intend to give him a second round. Hopefully we can save enough to repeat the trip in the next five or six years. Until then, we just wait and keep praying for the next miracle. Thank you again for all your support emotionally and financially and all the prayers. We can not stress enough our gratitude to everyone who helped contribute; you didn’t just donate money you changed the path of Trey’s future. God bless you all!
Madalyn Marie Hayden born on January 20 2009 at St. Mary’s in Evansville. She was 18 weeks early born at 22 weeks and 1 day. She weighed 1 lb 2.4 oz and 11 inches long! A
ccording to Peter Ko, owner of both Tokyo of Japan in both Owensboro and Evansville, “When you eat at traditional hibachi-style restauMomKat rants, you are payContributor ing 40% more for the show. The customer has to pay for that and we give the customer the same quality food with less price. Besides it’s the same show every time. We wanted to focus on the food. We found that hibachi chefs were too expensive and we wanted to be able to cut the price and give bigger portions so everyone can enjoy it. We also not try to use much oil and don’t use any chemicals in our food like MSGs. But, the most important thing is to keep the restaurant clean.” The staff of Tokyo was very gracious as we entered into our March dining experience. The last time we reviewed Tokyo, we focused on the hibachi but in this compact dining establishment, big flavors emerge! From sushi to authentic appetizers and of course the hibachi our table soon filled with a colorful assortment of dishes. Peter first brought a small plate filled with unidentified squiggly somethings to our table first. I looked at the dish and then back at Peter. He explained it was a squid salad made with fresh cooked squid, bamboo shoots and sesame sauce. The squid has a naturally sweet flavor and but the salad gave off sweet and salty tones. Next, we sampled the shrimp tempura – large, sweet shrimp that is lightly coated with a translucent batter and fried. It was very light and crispy; and had a much different flavor than the traditional fried shrimp you might find at an American restaurant. Food was piling high on the table at that point so my dining companion and I had to make more headway! The Japanese potato cake looked much like a fried hashbrown from McDonald’s but when you bite into the potato cake, you’ll immediately notice the difference. Inside the cake the potatoes were mashed not shredded and there were surprises of corn, onion and other vegetables throughout the cake. It was topped with a Japanese bar-b-q sauce and fried to a golden brown. • 14 •
Finally, we moved on to the four large sushi rolls that were arranged in a beautiful fashion on decorative plates. We started with the mildest of the rolls – the Bagel Maki. What most local Japanese restaurants call the Philadelphia Roll – the Bagel Maki was filled with cucumber, creamed cheese and smoked salmon. This is a great roll for those who want to enjoy the freshness of raw fish but in smaller quantities. The Caterpillar Roll was by far my favorite. It had a savory flavor and a hearty texture. The Caterpillar consisted of cucumber, avocado and Japanese bar-b-qued eel which made it darker in color than the other rolls. The Spicy Tuna Roll was a fun, whimsical sushi roll that mixed fresh fruit in with the other flavors. Tuna, cucumber and spicy mayo was topped with sliced kiwi and a coconut sauce. The roll started off sweet when the kiwi and coconut first hit your tastebuds but the spiciness of the inside bursts when you begin to chew! The conflicting flavors harmonized quickly but were inevitably followed by a mouthful of warm sake (which is available at the Evansville location on Green River Road). Our final roll was the Kentucky Derby or Tokyo Roll. This signature roll was very dif-
ferent from the others in that not only was it twice as large but also fried. Avocado, cucumber, tuna, white tuna, salmon and masago (smelt roe) were wrapped in rice and seaweed and deep fried to reveal a very delicious house roll. This is a great choice for those who are weary of raw foods or seek a more substantial sushi! Though we were stuffed to the gills, our hibachi is something my foodie friend and I are no stranger too. Tokyo hibachi has been a favorite of ours for several months and we have even turned on many of our friends to the notorious Bonsai! Tokyo does a great job of keeping the best features of high quality hibachi dining while going easy on your wallet. Unlike traditional hibachi restaurants, Tokyo prepares their meals on their grills away from your dinner table. However, doing this does not take away from the taste and service of the traditional hibachi grills. For a scant $10.55, we dined on beef, chicken, shrimp, scallops and vegetables with rice. The chicken was probably the tenderest chicken I have ever put into my mouth and the shrimp and scallops had to be cut in half to be eaten. The dish was saucy and scrumptious. Paired with Tokyo’s secret weapon – their shrimp sauce – the Bonsai meal was enough for two of me – even before I had eaten all the sushi! Since our food review I have tried to mimic the shrimp sauce at home but all my attempts have failed miserably… Starting at only $6.63, hibachi meals at Tokyo range from one meat to all four giving you different options each time you visit. Perhaps the best example of the incredible quality and value offered at Tokyo is the seafood. Tokyo’s shrimp is easily twice as large as most other restaurant’s and their scallops are quite possibly the largest and tastiest in town. Tokyo only uses the highest quality seafood and all of their scallops are chosen for their size. Peter has to travel to Georgia and Tennessee to pick up the cases of scallops Tokyo uses. Tokyo is located in both Owensboro, KY, on Frederica and on the east side of Evansville, IN, on north Green River Road. Music Madness Spreads through the Tri-State
Strawberry Jam and Kentucky Fried Music Festivals
M
arch madness transitions to music madness for the month of April. During the month two music festivals will be taking place in the tri-state area. The Kentucky Fried Music Festival will take place Friday April 17 and Saturday April 18. The event, featuring 21 of the area’s most talented musicians, will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and end 1 Emilee Shake Contributor a.m. Saturday morning. Festivities will resume at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning and conclude at 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The location of this event is Stanley’s Pumpkin Hollow in Madisonville, and camping is free. On site there will be food venders and area merchants. Ten percent of the proceeds will go to local nonprofit organizations. Attendees are allowed to bring coolers of food and beverages; however, pets are not permitted. One-day passes are available for $20 and twoday passes for $30. Ushering in the final performances of the 2008 – 2009 theatre Melissa Kaiser season, all of our fabulous Staff Writer venues pull out the stops to send this season out in style: The Owensboro Symphony Orchestra presents a new patriotic classic, Ellis Island: The Dream of America; RiverPark Center presents two highly anticipated productions: Bye Bye Birdie and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; and Theatre Workshop of Owensboro presents the funny, yet touching musical, Quilters. Each of these productions creates the perfect conclusion to an equally perfect theatre season. On April 18th at 7:30 p.m., the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra presents Kentucky’s premier of Ellis Island: The Dream of America. This beautiful contemporary piece by Peter Bayer combines the best the OSO has to offer. This dynamic satirical plot centers on the rock star and teen heartthrob, Conrad Birdie and the chaos that ensues after he is drafted into the war. His manager, Albert, and Albert’s girlfriend, Rose, organize a contest where one lucky young lady will receive a good-bye kiss from Conrad on The Ed Sullivan Show before he is shipped out. Small town Ohio native, Kim MacAfee, wins the honor. Conrad and his gang, plus several reporters, descend on this small town and conflict and chaos ensue! Adding to the excitement, on April 26, the hilarious musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, sends audience members forward as they double over in laughter. The comical setting for this story centers on a spelling bee competition at the Putnam County Middle School where six uniquely quirky kids compete to win the championship. Even the words the students must spell are amusing and intriguing. The three adult characters are truly interesting; the two judges – a former spelling bee champion and a crazy vice principal – and the “comfort” counselor add their own dash of hilarity to this tantalizing plot. Finally, Theatre Workshop of Owensboro presents the heartwarming dramatic musical, Quilters as their final production of the 2008 – 2009 theatre season. Quilters is a heartwarming tale of the life of one family – specifically the women – and their struggle to survive frontier life. We learn of the joyous occasions of pioneer life: girlhood, love, marriage, and childbirth, and of the challenging times: illness, fires, twisters, and death, through their eyes. inally - Spring is in the air, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and Easter is right around the corner! One thrilling way of celebrating this holiday is by participating in a good ol’ Easter egg hunt – and Owensboro has
plenty to offer! One of several Easter Egg Hunts going on during April is the Family Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Owensboro Parks and Recreation. On April 3, from 7-8 p.m., Mooreland Park becomes speckled with eggs from one side of the Tennis Courts to the playground and every nook & cranny in between. This will be no easy hunt since your family will only have the light of a lone flashlight to guide you. Participation fee is $10 per family of four and you must register fo r this event by March 27. Community members are invited to join this church family as they hunt and peck for the candy filled eggs scattered over their church lawn. No fees or registration required, simply come as you are, ready to search high and low for all colorful candy-filled eggs! Finally, the biggest Easter event in Owensboro takes place on Saturday April 4, at Diamond Lakes Resort when they host their annual Easter Eggstravaganza! This will be a day full of family fun and you do not want to miss it! The hunt begins at 11:30 a.m., with several eggciting activities, including arts and crafts, bunny-themed games such as pin-the-tailon-the-bunny, a duck pond, a fishing game, and face painting (prices for these activities range from .50 - $1.00). You can even get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny (for FREE). The main event for the day, the Easter Egg Hunt, kicks off at 1:30 p.m. There will be three hunts: one for age group 1-2 years, one for 3-5 years, and one for ages 6 and up. cd reviews Kenneth Ishak Silver Lining from a Black Sky (Division Records) www.kennethishak.net The musical composition in this album is precise, smooth and superb but there is a major factor which weighs the music down like a bag of ball bearings. Norwegian Grammy award-winner Ken Ishak happens to be the tack in the foot of an otherwise incredible album. Ishak’s voice is simply too high and nasal in most of the CD and this does not compliment the smooth jazz and soaring rock inspired tunes. The lyrical composition of the album is also strong, especially in songs like “New Rising Sun” and “The Passionate.” The music is definitely the main character in “The Sword,” a gloomy chamberesque piece and “Anytime, Kid,” a soothing but progressive piano driven creation. There also seems to be noticeable influence of Seventies-era psychedelic rock such as Pink Floyd and The Beatles (in their drug days) on the songs “Snakes in the Grass” and “SOS.” What Ishak really has going for him are his talent with instruments. On the album he plays guitar, bass, synthesizer, omnichord, piano, organ and even some percussion. The album is perfect for spacing out on a rainy, spring day but leaves me wishing Ishak sounded more like George Clinton or Isaac Hayes. –Nick Durcholz - Rating: 4
Peter Koppes Misty Heights And Cloudy Memories 2xCD (Immersion) Australian psychedelic group The Church have been around for a great long time, creating some memorable and suitably trippy space-out rock sounds, yet seldom lacking in melodic hooks and darker, more introspective overtones. This fairly concise solo retrospective from guitarist Koppes shows off his own chops, sans the band, and damned if this apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Disc A covers his more recent output, and these are clear evidence that Koppes’ spectral guitar sound is integral the Church’s oeuvre, indeed. Certainly, the mystical poetics of (Church frontman/lyricist) Steve Kilbey are missing here, but Koppes does an admirable job at keeping it consistent and stylish, even ambiguous at times. Atmospherically, the subtly mysterious tones and almost-ambient flow are more than palatable. “Met Her Today” is a catchy pop tune of the highest order, whereas “Thank You” could be a Church outtake circa Starfish. Disc B showcases Koppes’ earlier solo work, and although some of this sounds awfully dated with primitive drum boxes and simplistic keyboard accents, there are some fine little songs here as well. “Desert Flower Bride” is a top-shelf • 30 •

Olafur Arnalds Variations Of Static CDEP (Erased Tapes) With just his second release, Icelandic composer Arnalds creates a vibrant and intimately beautiful set of five instrumental tunes that combine the austere classical melancholy of Arvo Part with the modern sounds of glitchy electronica (think Autechre or Aphex Twin). It’s an incredible (and all too-short) collection, embracing rich and sonorous strings, bittersweet piano, and, on occasion, loops and subtle textural manipulations. The first track, “Fok,” marries some minimal booms and skitters to the sensitive string/piano foundation, and “Lokaðu Augunum” is a stunning treat in the ambient tradition of Stars of the Lid. As a complete work, this 21+ minute release flows effortlessly, ripe with emotion and delicacy. Variations Of Static is a mature, thoughtful, rich, and stylish set of warmly evocative music that’s quite recommended if you’re into stuff like Radiohead or fellow countrymen Sigur Ros. - Todd Zachritz - Rating: 5

StoleyPT winter-summer-winter-summer (In Music We Trust Records) www.stoley.com This album is just skin and bones. There is no palpable substance or feeling to this music. The New York natives have noticeable talent, apparent in the lead guitar and the drummer. The guitars are a buzzing symphony with smooth composition but the vocals and lyrics are sufferable at best. Stoley’s voice is meshes well with the music but there are very few places in the album in which the vocals sound sincere. There is a lack of soul here. Actually, there is more soul in the secret song (track nine) than in the rest of the album. There are a couple of songs that stand out from the rest of the album mostly due to sharp guitar work. These are “Ladies’ Choice,” “Switchblade” and “Kate.” These songs are made for raw, arm-flailing eccentricity. It does not help Stoley’s cause that their CD doesn’t sound like it’s mixed properly and this can be a roadblock for any band no matter how good they are. I get the vibe from this album that the band doesn’t seem comfortable with the style of music they are playing. StoleyPT has potential but needs to be refined. –Nick Durcholz - Rating: 2.7

Hannah Montana: The Movie (Buena Vista) As if I didn’t feel like a sex offender sitting alone in the theatre watching Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience! Now, I have to watch this too? Why do I have this nagging suspicion that I have to atone for something? Did I accidentally run over someone and not know it? Have I stolen from a children’s charity? Do I need to beeline to a confessional? In the words of the Pet Shop Boys, “What have I done to deserve this?” The only amusing thing about this whole project is the fact that Miley Cyrus said, while being interviewed on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, that she hopes to land an Oscar� nomination for this movie. Idiot! Twit! Twerp! Dumb a$$!
State of Play (Universal)
This big-screen treatment of the BBC mini-series State of Play boasts a terrific cast. With names like Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn (who is just as gifted as her husband) and Viola Davis attached, it’s hard to think that director Kevin McDonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void) could go wrong. But I fear he may have. Playing the congressman at the center of the film’s murder-mystery . . . Ben Affleck! Oh no! Remember when we were kids and we used to get those Officer Friendly stickers to put on toxic cleaning supplies. I’d like to put one on Ben Affleck’s face. It saddens me that he is going to be the center of the attention here, because he’s hardly the class of this field.

Well, it’s never a good sign when a movie studio delays a film and that’s exactly what happened to The Soloist, which stars Jamie Foxx, as a homeless man who was once a classical music prodigy, and Robert Downey Jr., as the journalist who finds him and reports about him. The Soloist was initially supposed to bow last November, was then pushed to March 09, then finally bumped to the end of April. Despite the constant shuffling, I am optimistic. I’ve been seeing the trailer for about seven months now (Hello, just release the damn thing!) and Foxx and Downey Jr. look terrific. If you ask me, the film has one more thing going for it and that’s director Joe Wright. With his last two projects, 2005’s Pride and Prejudice and 2007’s Atonement , Wright has proven that he can conduct classically!

According to the Academy Awards, the Best Picture of 2008. According to my previously mentioned Top Ten list, the second best movie of 2008. Slumdog Millionaire is genius storytelling by director Danny Boyle, who snagged a Best Director Oscar� for his work on this project. Here, he tells us the story of a young Mumbai “slumdog” who defies the odds and makes his way onto Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Boyle makes us root for his “slumdog” Jamal the same way audiences in the Seventies rooted for Rocky and the same way audiences in the Nineties rooted for Forrest Gump. Slumdog Millionaire is clever, unique and stirring filmmaking. You will truly sit on the edge of your seat while you cheer Jamal to victory. That’s my final answer! GRADE: A

In my column, I often make reference to my list of the Top Ten Movies of any given year. Well, (and this will surprise no one reading this) I also keep a list of the Worst Movies of any given year. And, in 2008, Will Smith clocked in a #10 with Seven Pounds, a ridiculous morality play that involves a tragic car accident, battered women, a blind Woody Harrelson, a heart-diseased Rosario Dawson, organ transplants, a bathtub full of ice and a pet jellyfish. If you know anyone at all who enjoyed this movie, I can merely tell you they simply fell victim to big-screen manipulation. This movie is preposterous and embarrassingly bad. GRADE: D-
floor if I had seen this movie. Yes, I fully understand that death is a necessary component of the circle of life (suddenly, I’m Elton John)! But I refuse to watch a cute and cuddly Labrador Retriever bite the big one. I’m the guy who swan dives for the remote control when that @#$%ing Sarah McLachlan commercial for the Humane Society comes on the television. I’m the guy that laid in my living room floor and sobbed like a child when Barbaro got hurt at the Preakness and when Eight Belles had to be put down at last year’s Kentucky Derby. I am not watching Marley and Me. I don’t care how many people tell me it’s a “really good movie, Chad!” You all can kiss it! Yes! Jennifer Aniston may be terrific. Yes! Owen Wilson’s nose may not look that crooked in this movie. I don’t care! The dog dies!
The first few minutes of Scott Derrickson’s (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) remake of 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still are quite the roller coaster. I was fully engaged when Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) was whisked from her home, rushed to a secret bunker and briefed about a mysterious flying object set to collide with Earth in, yes, just 76 minutes. Unfortunately, the movie ceases being entertaining and engaging at the precise moment of that collision. It’s at that moment that this movie stands still. There’s a gigantic robot-looking thing in the middle of Central Park and everybody assumes it’s going to destroy Manhattan. Logical assumption, I guess. Lord knows I would be headed for Jersey! But it doesn’t destroy anything. In fact, Derrickson moves his movie out of Manhattan and into the woods. And, in his bizarre rural setting, where Dr. Benson and Klaatu have time to get to know each other, nothing seems urgent. The initial frantic pace of the movie gets zapped. Consequently, not only did the Earth stand still, so did I. In fact, I may have dozed off! GRADE: C
