ice cream cone fans Summer is the time for frozen treats! Here’s the scoop for making an ice cream cone fan craft that’s super easy and super cute. Plus, this cool cone can keep your child cool during the hot days outside. You’ll need the following supplies to make one fan: • 2 sheets of colored paper • 1 sheet of white card stock • Brown paint • Paint brush • Fork utensil • Scissors • 1 red pompom • Tape • Glue Start by painting the white sheet of card stock with the brown paint. While the paint is wet, use the fork to make diagonal lines across the paper, going in both directions to create a grid like an ice cream cone pattern. Let the paint dry. Fold the two sheets of colored paper accordion-style, folding along the short edge of the paper. Then fold the accordion-folded sheets in half. Pull apart the folds to create a fan and tape the edges to hold in place. Next, tape both of the paper “fans” together to create a circle. At the top center of the paper fan circle, glue the red pompom to make a cherry. After the brown paint has dried, cut out a cone-shaped triangle. To finish the craft, glue the fan circle “ice cream scoop” to the brown painted cone. Louisa Kopp is a South Jersey mom and writer. a letter from the EDITOR

S

ummer is finally here and it’s time to relax and enjoy the summer with your kids. But, how does one relax with house full of kids for the summer? This is the ultimate mom challenge to make the best of a lighter schedule, but less structure. I eventually found an equation that worked in my house… send the kids to camp! When my kids were small I felt like a camp counselor myself keeping the kids busy enough, yet allowing spontaneity to create down time and relaxation. This summer treat yourself by taking time to fill your own bucket. South Jersey MOM writer, Patricia Mooneyham has compiled a list of reminders of things you can do for yourself this summer, True Love Starts With Yourself (page 8). I know the kids take up most of your time, but how many

times have we heard the expression to truly love someone else we need to love ourselves first. An hour yoga class, walk in the park or buying a new lipstick can feel like a new start. The article that stands out the most for me this month is Stranger Danger (page 6). Summer is a time that kids have more freedom to be out riding a bike or playing in the neighborhood and children need to understand different safety measures for different circumstances. When my son was about 3 or 4 years old he liked to play in the backyard while I was preparing dinner. This gave him some needed space to play without me helicoptering as we usually spent all day, everyday together. We had talked about stranger danger and he learned about it at preschool. I thought he got it, but I was wrong in my assumption. I asked him one day, “If you’re playing in the yard and a person comes to the gate and says come with me to get an ice cream, what would you say?” His reply was, “Thank you!” What, are you kidding me? No, that’s good manors, not stranger danger!✲ Be sure to visit South Jersey MOM upcoming events. Riverwinds Sunset Music Festival on July 8th from 5:30pm to 10:30pm. What Most Parents Don’t Know About

H

ave you ever taught your child “don’t talk to strangers?” If so, you’re not alone. While child safety is every parents primary concern, this is just one example of a misguided or outdated tactic many parents use to teach their children about safety. Are you teaching your child the right ways to stay safe? Good Stranger vs. Bad Stranger According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (citing U.S. Department of Justice reports), more than 2,000 children are reported missing every day. While most of these cases don’t end in disaster, it is still important to equip our children with the right safety tools. Let us begin with that simple statement almost all parents teach their children, “don’t talk to strangers.” The challenge with telling them “don’t talk to strangers” is that when a problem arises when they are faced with a true emergency, they may not know how to handle it. Explain that if they cannot find you and they refuse to communicate with anyone, they could be in serious trouble. However, if you teach them the right kind of strangers to talk to, they can analyze the situation better and find help when needed. Typically, the best types of strangers to talk to are police officers in uniform, or a mom or grandma with children. And, what exactly is a bad stranger? If an adult asks your child for help, your child should be able to tell that something is not right. An adult should ask another adult for assistance, not a child. Teaching your child to distinguish between a good stranger and a bad stranger is critical for child safety. Phone Number and Address Let’s fast-forward a bit. You taught your child the right kind of stranger to talk to and shortly after, they need to use what they learned. For example, they get caught in an emergency, find a uniformed police officer, and inform the officer that they are lost and need help. The police officer 6 | July/August 2016

By Robert McQuade will ask for a phone number or address. As a Martial Arts Instructor, I am amazed at how many children do not know their phone number or home address. The best thing to do, as a parent, is to prepare them by making them memorize both and testing them on it every 6 months or so. Safe Word or Code Some ‘bad strangers’ are very smooth talkers. Let’s imagine they come up to your child with the following dialogue: “Hey Sara, I’m good friends with your mom. Your mom was in a car accident and she asked me to come pick you up so I can take you to her.” Sounds like a pretty legitimate story, right? The child will probably be even more convinced of the stranger’s honesty because they knew her by name. What your child doesn’t realize is the stranger could have either read it off their book bag or overheard one of her friends using their name. What if your child had a way to verify if there actually was an emergency? This is where a safe word comes in. The safe word should be something ONLY you and your child know. Your child just needs to know when to ask for the safe word and to scream if the stranger does not know it. Teach assertive behaviors Teach your child to scream, “I don’t know you! You’re not my mom/dad!” It’s been my experience that most parents teach their children to throw a temper tantrum in an emergency in order to draw attention. That’s not wrong, however, what child does not throw a temper tantrum occasionally? A temper tantrum may generate some attention, but that might not be enough. It certainly won’t generate as much attention as your child screaming the words “STOP! I don’t know you! You’re not my dad/ mom.” By saying these words, your child can effectively alert anyone nearby that something is truly wrong. The sooner you teach your child these techniques the better. Just like anything else of critical importance, make sure you review these steps with your children from time to time- making sure they are updated with any new information.✲ Robert McQuade is a Martial Arts Instructor at Action Karate Cinnaminson. True Love Starts with

Yourself

By Patricia Mooneyham

M

any may have heard the expression to truly love someone else we need to love ourselves first. While we think we are showing love all the time with doing and being everything to everyone we think is important to us, we are very often not loving or “filling the emotional tank” for ourselves. I recently did a book club gathering of the “Five Love Languages” and although the original concept was for married couples if you check out the book on Amazon you can see the additional titles that have come as an extension of the concept. We all have a love language and what fills our tanks is as different as we are. So this summer in an effort to challenge women to be open to receiving the love that they deserve I want to recommend a few things to help in the self-love department.

• Schedule a date night even if it is with yourself. It can be a night with your significant other or with your BFF but make it a priority. Just like a dentist appointment for your kids would be. Try to make this at the very minimum a monthly ritual.

• Ask for what will really make you happy, you don’t have to wait for a holiday. Whether it is affection, attention, help with the laundry, flowers once a week or to be told you are beautiful make it easy for those you love to love you back and give you what you need. Tell them. Don’t demand or nag, just communicate your needs.

• Find a Nordstrom and let one of the make-up artists do your make up. It is usually free if you are asking about the product line. I am not saying we all aren’t beautiful the way we are, but it is fun to have someone do your make up and I like Nordstrom because it reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

8 | July/August 2016

“Ask for what will really make you happy, you don’t have to wait for a holiday”

• Light some candles, buy a bath fizzy and soak in the tub. Hire a babysitter if you have to but nothing feels like you are loving yourself than to indulge in a little “Calgon Take Me Away” therapy. Make it special and don’t forget to moisturize when you get out of the tub! • Pick something new for your health and do it. Positive focus on an area in our lives creates more positive energy in that area. What better place to create that than our health. So whether it is to drink more water, take a multi vitamin or a yoga class do something for yourself in this area. It is a great example for your kids and it is good for you which makes it a win-win. These are not huge things to incorporate in your life. There are minimal costs involved but the return on the investment in yourself will yield a windfall in return. Once your tank is filled this summer, you will have even more love to give those you love the most!✲ Patricia Mooneyham coaches and educates women on personal confidence, wellness and empowerment. Graduate Daniel agreed, “The school allowed me to find my niche in the world, academically, spiritually and personally.” Fellow graduate Arden spoke of how the school had allowed her to overcome her shyness as she stood poised and confident delivering her speech. Every Middle School student at Friends School serves at a local nonprofit three times a year to learn and support the mission of organizations that care for others. Eighth grade students, as part of their graduation requirement, also design and coordinate an individual service project of their choosing. During graduation students recalled their amazing journey at Friends School and the many special experiences beyond the classroom they experienced – experiences unavailable at many other schools. They spoke of the hands on learning they obtained through their 8th grade trip to Chincoteague Bay Field Station, a fall trip where they visited a marine biology and coastal ecology student center in Virginia, their trip to Costa Rica and an overnight canoe trip through the Pinelands. Many had special memories at Camp Onas, the annual 6th grade fall trip that focuses on environmental education, team and individual challenges. This experience allowed them to form lasting bonds with their teachers and classmates. One student, Joshua, called his school journey, “the best experience a child could ask for.” Equipped with the academic and experiential knowledge they gained from Friends School Mullica Hill, graduates will further their achievements at some of the finest independent schools in the area. The 2016 alumni will go on to The Tatnall School, George School, Bishop Eustace, Gloucester County Institute of Technology, St. Augustine Prep, Friends Select, Wilmington Friends and elsewhere. Water Safety Brush Up: The 5 essential water safety rules to follow this Summer

N

ow that the warmer weather is finally here, it’s time to refresh your water safety skills before you and your loved ones head out to the pool. Follow along with these 5 essential water safety tips for a safe and splashtastic Summer!

1. Always Supervise Your Little Swimmers The absolute most important rule in water safety is to always keep supervision. No matter the swim proficiency of your children, it is essential to have an undistracted adult keep constant supervision of the pool area. Very young children can drown in less than 2 inches of water, so keep an eye on them even when they are in inflatable pools, fountains, or even near buckets! That being said, you should make sure your little ones won’t be able to reach the pool area without an adult present. Consider pool fences that are at least 4 feet high or taller, with a self-closing and self-latching gate that is beyond a child’s reach. Don’t forget to keep the gate area clear of any toys or objects that can be used to reach the gate latch! 2. Make Sure You and Your Kids Know How to Swim Children aged 1-4 with formal swimming lessons have up to 88% less of a chance of drowning. Children can learn how to swim from a very young age. However, do not assume children who knows how to swim are not at risk for drowning. They will still need to be supervised by an adult at all times to ensure water safety. 3. Be Swim Proficient, Know CPR, and First Aid Certified Although this may seem like an obvious step, many people, even experienced swimmers, underestimate the need for knowledge of CPR and First Aid. Be sure you are up to date on your First Aid knowledge and certifications so you can take charge in case an emergency situation arises. Effective CPR can double a child’s chances of survival, so make sure the 14 | July/August 2016

supervising adult is not only swim proficient, but also know basic CPR and First-aid training in case of a swimming emergency. During the time it takes for the ambulance to arrive, CPR training could save a life. Due to popular demand, many swim schools offer water safety and first aid courses for parents, so be sure to check! 4. Establish Pool Rules Adults and children have different sets of rules to follow in the pool. Adults, including babysitters, should make sure that they know the location of pool safety equipment, such as first aid kit, throw rings, and a phone for emergencies. On the other hand, children should understand that good pool etiquette is essential to their safety. Some examples of rules to follow near the pool include no running near the pool area, no pushing or dunking others in the pool, and never pretend or ‘play’ drown. 5. Don’t Forget About Sun Protection! Sun safety is just as important as water safety when it comes to swimming. Many of us tend to forget to reapply sunscreen, but the American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least 1 ounce, or 1 shot glass’ worth, of sunscreen, applied all over the body every 2 hours. For swimmers, the best kind of sunscreens should be at least SPF 30 and waterproof. Parents should also consider bringing along hats, UV sunglasses, and protective clothing for longer sessions in the outdoors! Swimming is a fun and healthy activity, but you’ll enjoy your water experience so much more when you practice these safety precautions. Happy swimming!✲ Diana Goodwin is the CEO and Founder of AquaMobile and is passionate and knowledgeable about all things related to swimming. www.aquamobileswim.com

Summertime Menu By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

The air is filled with the sound of twittering, chirping birds; the ground’s producing beautiful, sun-kissed daffodils, and the temperature’s on the rise! These are just a few sure signs that summer has truly arrived, and, with it, comes the desire to put aside the heavier, comfort foods most people enjoy during the cold winter months and replace them with lighter, summertime meals. Here are three recipes that are filling yet not too heavy -- perfect for a summertime menu! Almond Coated Chicken

• 10-12 boneless, skinless chicken tenderloins • 2 cups almond flour • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder • 1/2 tsp. onion powder • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste • 3 eggs, beaten • Extra virgin olive oil Preheat oven to 400°. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with non-stick olive oil cooking spray, set aside. In a bowl, add the almond flour, parmesan cheese and seasonings, set aside. Dredge the chicken tenderloins into the beaten eggs, then into the almond flour mixture until well coated on both sides. Place the tenderloins in one layer onto the prepared baking pan. Drizzle the chicken lightly with extra virgin olive oil and place pan into the oven. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove pan from oven, flip chicken over and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until clear juices flow when the chicken’s pierced. Serve.

• 1 small onion, diced or sliced small • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half • 1 English cucumber, peeled and diced • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese In a large saucepan, cook the quinoa in water for 15-20 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Allow to cool. In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil, set aside. In a large bowl, gently toss the quinoa together with the olives, parsley, onion, tomatoes and cucumbers. Pour the olive oil mixture over the quinoa. Add salt and pepper to taste and gently toss in the feta cheese. As always, Bon Appetit!

Roasted Cauliflower with Parmesan & Breadcrumbs • 1 head cauliflower, cut into 1-inch florets • 3–4 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese • Garlic powder, to taste • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste

Preheat oven to 400º. In a bowl, toss florets with olive oil, bread crumbs and cheese. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet greased with non-stick cooking spray. Season with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Roast 25-35 minutes or until nicely browned.

Greek Quinoa Salad

• 3 cups cold water • 1 1/2 cups quinoa, uncooked • 1/4 cup apple cider or balsamic vinegar • Juice from one lemon • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced or grated • 3-4 tbs. extra virgin olive oil • 1/2 cup pitted Kalamata olives • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio is the author of “Seasoned With Love,Treasured Recipes” & “Lisa Ann’s Seasoned With Love II”, and the children’s book, “Snicker Learns An Important Lesson.” Visit her blog http://lisaanndinunzio. blogspot.com/ or Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001935347501

Ask the Doc Is This Going to Hurt? In a procedural specialty caring for children, this question comes up more often than any other (from children and parents alike). I know it is foremost on my mind when I take my son to the doctor—or anywhere else for that matter. Unfortunately, examining and treating children often involves some discomfort and distress. However, there are simple and effective ways Dr. Ryan Walker to minimize pain and make children feel safe. Even young children can often express their fears in a clear and considered manner. Children should be told what will and will not happen in the course of their visit. Often, acknowledging and addressing their anxiety up front can be enough to allay their fears. Explaining there usually aren’t any shots at our visits calms the nerves of children who have come to associate doctors’ visits with the unfriendly needle.

When a procedure does involve discomfort, we must be particularly sensitive not to dismiss children’s pain. We should anticipate and treat it to the best of our ability. In infants, we use sugar water prior to releasing tongue ties since it has been proven effective at treating pain. In older children, we work with parents to develop a plan if pain is anticipated. Tonsillectomy, for instance, can cause a sore throat for up to two weeks. With newer techniques and a clear postoperative plan, we are able to reduce and manage this pain more effectively. Explaining the nature and duration of the exam is critical to gaining children’s trust and coaching them through the exam. Any procedure, even if painless and brief, can be anxiety-provoking. Explaining and demonstrating the instruments before slowly working up to the actual exam can make this process easier for children, parents, and medical staff alike.
