THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER ARTIST

RADCLIFFE BAILEY

T

he New York Times describes artist Radcliffe Bailey’s shimmering, shape-shifting works as being fueled by an exploration of “Black Atlantic culture, the vital, nurturing, agitated link between Africa and the Americas.” Born in 1968 in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Radcliffe Bailey moved to Atlanta when he was four years old. Growing up, his interest in art was piqued by visits to the High and the art classes he took at the Atlanta College of Art. He later earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Atlanta College of Art in 1991. Bailey harmonizes an intuitive balance of world history and familial memory. Through exploration of the past, the present, and the unknown, Bailey layers meaning into his art by layering objects. Combining two and three dimensional forms, he uses various mediums and scale to create a diverse and engaging collection of art that can be read together as pages of the same book. Bailey’s work is represented in leading museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. 4

CREATIVE PROCESS: VINCENT MANTSOE

AFRO-FUSION DANCER AND CHOREOGRAPHER INVITES US TO TRAVEL ON HIS DANCE JOURNEY by Holley Calmes incent Sekwati Koko Mantsoe grew up in Soweto, South Africa, surrounded by a family filled with dance and tradition. Many women of his family were Sangomas, or healers, who woke early in the morning to perform their rituals. “Dancing every morning at 4 a.m. and again in the evening gives one a different perspective about culture,” Mantsoe explains. Ritual dance was not the only influence which led him to eventually become an internationally recognized dancer and choreographer. Street dancing to the music of Michael Jackson and the Temptations was also a part of his young life. “Memories are important, to keep one’s path to many possibilities,” Mantsoe says. “When I was younger, it was a time when the lives of young people like myself could not see beyond apartheid, so dancing in the streets chanting and dancing either the toi toi, and then privately dancing to the music of Michael Jackson, it was a time when my soul could just be free.” Street dance added another dimension to his life. “Dancing in the street and being a part of another life beyond what we knew or saw was a preparation to be open and true to one’s journey.”. Mantsoe began studying dance in 1990 when he won a scholarship to Sylvia Glassner’s “Moving Into Dance Company in Johannesburg. Learning more traditional forms of dance, he began merging these forms with street dance. Mantsoe became the Associate Director of MID from 1997 to 2001, and has continued to be a soloist and choreographer, creating dances for Dance Theatre of Harlem and Collective Black Artists in Toronto, Canada. His choreography includes the influences of traditional African dance with contemporary, Asian, aboriginal and ballet. “My work is who I am and where I come from,” he says. “It reflects the history and spirit of my ancestors, and it can be hard for audiences to understand, as it gives specific gestures that may be very alien to them.” Yet he asks audiences to not to worry about this lack of understanding. “I want you to travel with me on this journey, and I want you to be free to feel the impossible. Don’t ask questions about this gesture or that one.” “I believe that we are all students,” he continues. “We should all fill the same journey as when we were children. Take one step at a time, and be free to express what you feel, not what I am telling you to feel. It may take time to understand, but with patience, you can achieve more than you have imagined.” Finally, he explains, “It is all about us, our spirits living and wanting to dance again and again….To be continued onstage in Atlanta!” 6

GWINNETT BALLET THEATRE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF NUTCRACKER by Holley Calmes

Photos by Richard Calmes

W

hen Gwinnett Ballet Theatre began performing their version of The Nutcracker back in 1981, Gwinnett County was a small, sleepy Atlanta “burb.” Thirty years later, GBT performs on the splendid stage of the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center, delighting over 9,000 audience members annually who come from across the region to experience this annual holiday treat. This 30th Anniversary production will be especially exciting. New sets, props and costumes will be front and center. This spruced-up Nutcracker will be performed from December 2-18, including 11 public performances, 5 school shows and a special performance just for Boy and Girl Scouts. Performances are held on weekends, including a Friday and Saturday evening show plus Saturday and Sunday matinees. Eight of the public performances will be accompanied by the live, professional GBT Orchestra conducted by Predrag Gosta. (Mr. Gosta is also the creator and director of Atlanta’s acclaimed New Trinity Baroque Ensemble.) Over 150 performers will be involved in the production. GBT draws from its non-profit school to include dancers from the tiniest 4 year old angel to the loveliest graduating ballerinas, and all ages in between. Many of the dancers from past years have gone on to professional careers in major companies across the country, such as North Carolina Dance Theatre’s Principal Dancer Alessandra Ball who also performed with the acclaimed Victor Ullarte Ballet in Madrid, Spain. GBT also had two alumni be named in Dance Magazine’s annual January feature “25 to Watch.” Houston Ballet Soloist Jessica Collado won the distinction in 2009. Company C dancer Robert Dekkers, who also founded the company “Post:Ballet,” received the honor in 2011. GBT continues to serve its community by also being very active in outreach and ticketing initiatives to the underserved. Its adoption of Shiloh Elementary in 2008 has continued to offer economically challenged youngsters a chance to dance. A special scholarship program benefits many more. Community involvement with organizations such as the Gwinnett Public Library, United Way of Gwinnett, the Hudgens Center for the Arts, and many others have kept GBT in the mainstream of community life. Tickets for The Nutcracker are available through Ticketmaster and at the Gwinnett Center Box Office. Visit www.gwinnettballet.org for more information. 10

SNAPSHOT OF HISTORY

RUBBLE OF DISASTER 1962 by Ann Boutwell Mayor Ivan Allen said his official “au revoir”— meaning “until we meet again”— 49 years ago to a group of his Atlanta friends. Most were art association members, today’s Atlanta Arts Alliance. On Wednesday, May 9, 1962, they departed for a 25-day cultural tour of Europe from the Atlanta Municipal Airport, now HartsfieldJackson International Airport. The adventure arranged by American Express began in Paris and proceeded to London, Amsterdam, Lucerne, Venice, Florence, Rome, ending back in Paris for a four-day stay before the Atlanta return. On June 3, the Air France 707 chartered jet roared down the runway at Orly Airport and crashed. Monday’s Atlanta Constitution’s read— “106 Atlantans, 24 Others Die as Jetliner Crashes in Paris.” Two stewardesses were the “Rodin” by Kevin Burnup only survivors. Mayor Allen rushed to the French scene, to represent the distraught Atlanta families. In Explosion at Orly the Disaster that Transformed Atlanta (2001), Ann Uhry Abrams said, “From the rubble of disaster came the impetus to donate long-needed dollars for an arts center that would house a museum, art school, symphony, and theater.” On October 5, 1968, the new concrete $13 million Atlanta Memorial Art Center opened with much fanfare. What made it possible was the fundraising leadership of Richard H. Rich, the Emily and Robert Woodruff Foundation, the Atlanta Arts Council, and the Callaway Foundation. The next afternoon, French Ambassador Charles Lucet unveiled a casting of Auguste Rodin’s statue The Shade (L’Ombre), (L’Ombre) symbolizing reconciliation of death and destiny. In 1984, the center was renamed for Coca-Cola magnate Robert Woodruff its largest single benefactor. The entire complex is now the Woodruff Arts Center, home to the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art, Young Audiences, and 14th Street Playhouse. The Shade now stands amid greenspace fronting Peachtree Street circled by 11 granite plaques engraved with the names of the crash victims. Former Mayor Allen spoke at the rededication September 21, 1995, remembering his earlier official “au revoir” 33 years ago. 12

BILL LOWE GALLERY: CELEBRATING 22 YEARS C O M M E N C E: A Philosophical Détente

B

ill Lowe Gallery celebrates its twenty-second anniversary in Atlanta in July with a monumental show of works by artistic giant Thornton Dial, coupled with a super-chic exhibition of photographic images by Italian Thornton Dial Vogue photographer Greg Lotus. These shows are the fifth chapter in Lowe Gallery’s epic initiative titled “C O M M E N C E: A Philosophical Détente” which began in January 2011 and concludes in January 2013. Thornton Dial’s show is a presentation of his latest works, all of which address the destructive and regenerative forces of nature and their impact upon the human psyche. Dial celebrates his 83rd birthday in September and this show is presented concurrently with a major retrospective of his works at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This historic show attracted a blue-chip chorus of critical acclaim including a five-page story in Time Magazine, a full-page review in the New York Times and an equally glowing review in the Wall Street Journal. Greg Lotus presents his first major show in the Greg Lotus southern United States after his successful New York show. This exhibition includes a collection of photos spanning his 20-year career drawing inspiration from classical paintings, international travels, and life experiences. Lotus has his own evocative way of using light and shadow, playing with angles and composition to enhance the graphic quality of his images. His work captures the human desire to move beyond the common experience, often resulting in a constructed exaggeration of natural beauty. He often mixes high fashion with rural or wild surroundings and exotic animals with elements that link the rarefied atmosphere of the fashion industry to the organic beauty of the natural world. These two bodies of work will be interfaced with selected work from Bill Lowe Gallery’s stable as a demonstration of its twenty-two year advocacy of art that inspires, challenges and transforms audiences from around the world. The show is housed in Bill Lowe’s spectacular Two Peachtree Pointe gallery. Lowe describes his gallery as “part temple, part museum and part music video.” This show promises to be the visual arts event of the year for Atlanta.

Opening July 29, the Summer Festival is rounded out by Michael Frayn’s hilarious farce Noises Off. Clandestine affairs, out-of-control egos, drunken frivolity... and that’s just what’s happening backstage!
