Ruth Zuckerman: A warm heart of stone By Cheryl Anderson Brown Stones can be hard and cold, unyielding to the touch. Unless that touch belonged to a master sculptor like Ruth Zuckerman. Each slab of marble or block of stone she touched became warm and inviting, some would even say tender. A pair of lovers. A mother and child. Zuckerman launched her art career in New York City, where she worked in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. In 1970, she moved down south with her family, making a home and building a name for herself in Atlanta. Each year, she traveled to Pietrasanta, Italy, to work with the famed Carrara marble and to study with master carvers. From Italy, her work traveled to join numerous private, corporate and public collectors. Although well known for her carving of fluid figures from single blocks of stone, Zuckerman also worked in metal casting, particularly bronze. No matter her media, however, she stayed true to universal themes of family, love and protection. “Ruth Zuckerman’s stone sculpture reflects an utmost respect for the nature of her materials,” according to Diana McClintock, associate professor of art history at Kennesaw State University. In 1997, Zuckerman was working with Kennesaw State University to mount a solo exhibition of her recent works. When she suddenly passed away, KSU postponed the plans for a year and chose instead to do a retrospective of her four-decade-long career. That exhibition was the genesis of Kennesaw State’s ongoing relationship with the artist’s work. It was that show which inspired her husband, Bernard Zuckerman, to gift the bulk of his personal collection to the university and to provide $2 million for the school’s art museum. Through the Zuckerman Collection, students and others are able not only to view dozens of her stone and cast sculptures, they can also see her sketches and maquettes. They can read her notes and delve into her creative process. “Kennesaw State has a fantastic study collection,” McClintock says. “There is a wide variety of work and, for artists like Ruth Zuckerman, a real depth of material to explore.” Works from the Ruth Zuckerman Collection are on display in the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance Center at Kennesaw State. hen the Atlanta Lyric Theatre opens its season with “Thoroughly Modern Millie” on September 16 at The Strand in Marietta, Brandt Blocker can bask in the glow of knowing he has greatly influenced the growth of musical theatre in Atlanta. Blocker arrived in Atlanta in May of 2007, finding a city with plenty of quality theatre. But his great passion, musical theatre, was not represented with the depth he knew the city needed and deserved. He describes his taking the reins of the Atlanta Lyric Theatre as “a match made in Heaven,” giving him the opportunity to do the work he loves and revitalize the local, professional musical theatre scene at the same time. “I left New Orleans and came to Atlanta just for this job,” Blocker explains. “I produced a full season and realized that we had one venue that was too small, and one venue that was too big. We searched for the perfect site, a theatre seating around 500, and in the summer of 2008 we found The Strand.” The Historic Strand is “almost like a mini Fox Theatre,” Blocker says. “It has charm, it’s in the beautiful Historic Square in Marietta, there is free parking, and with all the great restaurants and other amenities, it makes the whole area perfect for an evening out. Finding the Strand was another match made in Heaven.” The Atlanta Lyric Theatre has continued in this new location, under Blocker’s leadership, 6

to ignite the musical theatre scene in Atlanta. Producing entire seasons of well known musicals with exacting quality and fine, professional local talent has made a big difference in Atlanta’s cultural atmosphere. “My mission has been to cultivate musical theatre in Atlanta, and I think we’ve succeeded a lot faster than I thought possible,” Blocker states. He cites the burgeoning number of audiences the Atlanta Lyric Theatre has experienced, denoting a public hungry for what they have to offer. “Another indication of musical theatre’s ascendancy in Atlanta has been the number of other fine area theatres who are opening their seasons with a popular musical production,” Blocker continues. Blocker has enjoyed numerous high points or “Ah Ha!” moments since he arrived in Atlanta. Last year’s production of “Hairspray” was one, when Kayce Grogan Wallace received a standing ovation midway through her performance of “I Know Where I’ve Been.” Another emotional peak occurred on the night The Strand was reopened. “I knew that night that we had a home!” Blocker says. A great moment that will pay big artistic dividends in the years to come occurred this year. Alan Kilpatrick was hired as the Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director. “He has worked extensively in Atlanta and is very well known. Bringing him on to our staff was a great moment, a very great moment.” Blocker’s passion for musical theatre has ignited a spark in the Atlanta musical theatre community, and the fire is spreading. May the embers continue to glow.

found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.” Georgia O’Keeffe said these words, and so many children, even right here in Georgia, share the same feeling. Using the arts as a way to express thoughts and enhance learning (both in and out of the classroom) is becoming more widely accepted and is proven to help increase test scores and students’ overall academic achievement. With many schools cutting or eliminating the arts, schools and community venues are facing the challenge of how to keep the arts in their students’ everyday lives. Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center (YA) helps solve this problem. For almost 30 years, the Atlanta organization has been bringing the power of live arts experiences in music, dance, theatre, literary, and visual arts to young people from preschool through high school. With a roster of more than 70 professional artists and ensembles, YA’s curriculum-based programs reach more than 500,000 students in schools, recreation centers, libraries, museums, and other community venues throughout the state of Georgia every year. In addition to over 280 assembly, workshop, and residency programs—Young Audiences also has three literacy programs (smART START, Arts for Learning Lessons, and Digital Storytelling) which use arts integration to impact literacy and inspire education through the arts. Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which the arts leverage learning in other subject areas such as language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies. “During one of Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center’s programs, I watched students who were normally reserved and uninterested in the classroom setting come alive. Students who had no intensity for learning became excited about creating a project for a piece of literature they read. It was quite fascinating to see a child blossom from one extreme to another and then be excited and proud of his accomplishment,” said Dr. Annette Roberts, principal of Rainbow Elementary School. By learning through YA’s arts programs, young people will develop necessary 21st century skills (which includes thinking, reasoning, teamwork skills, and proficiency in using technology), and engage as life-long learners. nside the Baker Woodlands ravine at Emory University, sculptor George Trakas created the commissioned piece “Source Route” in 1979. Two pathways wind through the woods; the isolated grove on the busy Emory campus evokes stillness and contemplation. This is the site of “Water Study,” a free dance performance running October 15-19 and created by D. Patton White, artistic director of Beacon Dance. White, then a student at Emory, watched Trakas install the original “Source Rout” and was profoundly affected by both the sculpture and the landscape. “Water Study,” says White, “recreates a work originally performed in City Hall East. As Beacon Dance celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year, I wanted to re-mount older works, especially dances with a strong community element and impact.” The 2011 version of the dance incorporates material from the original work, while expanding the original concept and choreography. The piece is structured as a tour of the site of a scientific experiment. The audience watches as dancers move through the ravine and around Trakas’s “Source Route,” but what happens when the subjects of the experiment begin to behave in unexpected ways? Beacon Dance often performs site-specific dances in order to engage the community. “The Mapping Project,” a year- long event, saw a series of performances through DeKalb County Parks. With a performance each month, the project celebrated 12 parks in various seasons. “Water Study” is presented as part of a year-long exploration of water curated by the Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts. In another exploration of water through dance, Emory faculty member Lori Teague presents the public performance “Vessel—A water happening.” For months, Teague has collected water carriers of all shapes and sizes. Teague explains, “Each person who comes to the performance has one of these vessels and water is poured from one person to the next, in a line stretching across Emory’s campus. THe DIVIne SArAH BernHArDT (1844-1923) by Ann Boutwell n Wednesday, February 16, 1881, the West Point train from Mobile pulled into the carshed at Atlanta’s Union Depot. Aboard, ensconced in a private curtained car was the legendary French actresses Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923). While the troupe had nearby hotel accommodations, the 37-year-old-celebrity remained in her car parked alongside the carshed. She relaxed, chatted with the press, and received French-speaking visitors that afternoon. Later, a carriage took her to DeGive’s Opera House on Marietta Street where she portrayed the role of Marguerite Gautier in Alexandre Dumas, fils, La dame aux camélias, better known as Camille. The Sunny South magazine noted her arrival, saying that DeGive was never so completely sold out. Many members of the Young Men’s Library Association were in the audience, but few understood the play’s nuances because the performance was in French. With the final curtain came a burst of thundering applause. Back on the rails by dawn, she performed that evening in Nashville’s Masonic Theater. On January 25, 1892, Bernhardt returned to DeGive’s in “La Tosca.” After 11 years Atlanta discovered age had left no mark on her vitality. In 1906, the Theatrical Syndicate’s grip on stage bookings was tight. The Shubert brothers— Bernhardt’s agent—flatly refused to deal with them. Barred from Peachtree Street’s Grand Theater, she opened on March 17 a few doors down at a popular remodeled skating rink called the Peachtree Auditorium. Although latecomers marred Bernhardt’s performance March 22, 1911 at the Orpheum, her “Jeanne d’Arc” received an ovation after every act. Bernhardt launched her Atlanta “adieu” in private quarters at the Georgian Terrace Hotel, January 21, 1917. Eglé de VillelumeSombreuil Gatins hosted the Sunday gathering of 40 women. Monday was her final two performances on the Atlanta Theater stage. The repertoire included her greatest roles: Hecuba, Rosalie, Jeanne d’Arc, and Cleopatra and of course, Camille. March 26, 1923, Sarah Bernhardt died in Paris. Her burial site is Père-Lachaise Cemetery.

uth Zuckerman may have been the artist in the family, but her husband is also a man of vision, and he sees great things for her sculpture. After the Atlanta-based sculptor passed away in 1997, Bernard Zuckerman knew he wanted to share her work with the world by donating 100 of her sculptures to Kennesaw State University, where he anticipated an art museum would be built to showcase them. In 2007, Kennesaw State used funding from the Back row (l to r) KSu Foundation President Robert W. Now numbering nearly 1,000 pieces, it includes work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, N. C. Wyeth, Rembrandt Peale, Norman Rockwell and Viola Frey, as well as Georgia artists Athos Menaboni, Howard Finster and Ruth Zuckerman. “We needed to share these great works of art with our students and with the wider community, but we just did not have adequate galleries to display them properly and securely,” says Joseph Meeks, dean of the KSU College of the Arts. The rapidly growing university needed to grow some more to properly honor, exhibit and care for the artwork. Phase II of the art museum was needed very quickly. Bernard Zuckerman saw it as an opportunity to realize his dream of seeing Ruth’s work displayed in a glass pavilion, where the viewer could experience a sense of soaring height. So, last year, he pledged $2 million if Kennesaw State could raise another $1 million for the project. In less than one year, the university met the challenge, and has now started planning the new facility with the architectural firm of Stanley Beaman & Sears. Phase II will not only provide a “soaring” space for the Zuckerman collection, it will also include additional galleries and facilities for KSU students to conserve and study these works. Plans for the new museum are being drawn up under the leadership of Teresa Bramlette Reeves, KSU’s new director of the art museum and Galleries. Reeves arrived on campus in July, having served previously at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, The New York Kunsthalle and the Guggenheim. Like Zuckerman, she is a person with a big vision. She sees the growing KSU art museum as a place for the community and the students to come together. “I want to make the art museum a destination,” she says. Bernard Zuckerman would ask for nothing less. 16

The show premiered off-Broadway in 1996 and won a Pulitzer Prize. Tragically, its creator died suddenly the night before the premier. It later moved to Broadway, where it won a Tony Award for Best Musical and became the ninth-longest running Broadway show.
