he month of February brings one of my favorite holidays — Valentine’s Day. It’s a month filled with hearts, chocolate, treats and classroom parties. But there are lots of other days you and your kids can celebrate in February! Here are just a few special days this month: n February 2 is National Ukulele Day, one my son is sure to celebrate by playing a tune or two. n On February 6, honor National Chopsticks Day by attempting to eat every meal with chopsticks! n February 10 is the first day of the Chinese New Year. Deciphering Parenting Metaphors:

ANIMALS AND MACHINES

THE ANIMAL PARENTS Jellyfish Parent A jellyfish parent is permissive and doesn’t create many rules or expectations. They often give in to avoid confrontation and lack a backbone like a jellyfish. n How do you know you are acting like one? Your kid has been whining all day to eat their Halloween candy. Even though you know they can’t handle eating sugar, you hand over the bag and let them have at it. When they are running around the house, unable to go to sleep you realize that saying “no” would have been easier than dealing with the sugary aftermath. by Cheryl Maguire

When I grew up parents were referred to as, well, parents. But nowadays it is hard to keep up with the trendy terms used to describe people who raise children. First, there were helicopter parents then lawnmower parents and, now, the newest one — snowplow parents. Since land and air vehicles have been covered, maybe submarine? Besides machines there are animal types of parenting. Do animals also gather around and coin terms for their parents? If so, would they say, “You are really acting like a human parent right now.” Here is a cheat sheet of the latest lingo to help you figure out your style.

Tiger Parent Tiger parents are strict and demanding. They prioritize academic and extracurricular success. n How do you know you are acting like one? Your favorite show is Dance Moms, and you think the media has unjustly demonized the moms who are only trying to help their kid be on Broadway.

Elephant Parent Elephant parents are the opposite of tiger parents (although a koala bear or something cute and cuddly might have been a better choice as the opposite) and focus on nurturing and encouraging instead of tough love and being demanding. These parents are protective of their young and intervene at the first sign of danger. This style is similar to jellyfish parenting in the sense that these parents are permissive and lack boundaries. n How do you know you are acting like one? Not only did you have a video cam on your baby’s bassinet, but you also situated it directly next to your bed. At the first murmur of a whimper, you sprung out of bed and placed your baby next to you where you wanted the baby to be all along.

THE MACHINES Helicopter Parent Helicopter parents hover over their child’s every move and help when needed. They tend to worry a lot about their child. n How do you know you are acting like one? You hover next to your child as they eat their hotdog that has been cut into so many pieces it resembles grains of sand on a beach instead of food. And then you count the bites they consume to make sure they are receiving the proper amount of nutrition. If they haven’t reached 15 bites, you say you need to eat one more bite before you leave the table.

Lawnmower Parent Lawnmower parents are more aggressive than helicopter parents. Like a lawnmower that cuts grass or anything in its path, lawnmower parents mow away obstacles, so their child doesn’t have to experience any. n How do you know you are acting like one? When your kid calls, texts or sends a smoke signal to you that they forgot their lunch and you rush it over to the school faster than a FedEx delivery truck. Ditto for homework, sports equipment or water bottle. The thought of your child lacking in hydration for five minutes sends you into a tailspin.

Snowplow Parent The snowplow parent is more aggressive than a lawnmower parent since plowing requires more force than mowing. But they are similar in the sense that they remove any obstacles in their child’s way. The snowplow parent does not want their child to have to deal with problems, so the parent intervenes and fixes it for their child.

n How do you know you are acting like one? Since you reside in a cold climate, you deliver your child’s forgotten jacket, mittens, and hat to the school so that they can go outside for recess even though you are fully aware that they wore shorts and short sleeves to school. And you know they didn’t forget but rather chose not to bring any of those items because they have no intention of wearing them, but you bring them anyway.

Bulldozer Parent See definition for Snowplow Parent. This one is for the warmer climate parents who were not happy with the lawnmower metaphor and wanted a more robust descriptor. They also never shoveled 15 feet of cold wet snow in 30 below temperatures (not including the wind chill) and therefore they don’t comprehend how powerful and savior-like a snowplow is when it clears the road. n How do you know you are acting like one? Since you reside in warmer weather, before your kid goes to the beach not only do you pack the sunscreen, towel, 10 water bottles and 100 snacks, you also apply the sunscreen to your 15-year-old who is fully capable of applying sunscreen on their own.

SO WHICH ONE ARE YOU? I’ll admit it, I’ve probably exhibited symptoms of all these types of parenting styles over the years. When you have three kids, you are going to resort to whatever works in the moment. Instead of referring to parents as machines or animals maybe we can just call them what they are: superheroes.

THE NEW BROWNIES’ BOOK:

Bringing Joy and History to the Next Generation by Emily Webb

A critical piece of history is a monthly periodical published from January 1920 to December 1921. The work of W. E. B. Du Bois, “The Brownies’ Book,” was the first publication created for African American children. Now, 100 years later, this groundbreaking work has been reimagined in an anthology titled “The New Brownies’ Book: A Love Letter to Black Families.” The beautiful collection combines art, literature and history for an incredible look at Black life and was compiled by scholar and Emory University professor Karida L. Brown and her husband, artist Charly Palmer. Atlanta Parent spoke to the duo about the importance of this book for Black families and why Black history is relevant to all. How did you discover the original “The Brownies’ Book?” KLB: I was working on an academic book with a co-author and researching the sociology of W. E. B. Du Bois. In his archives, I found a group of letters where he reached out to literati and Harlem Renaissance artists asking them to contribute a piece of their best work for “The Brownies’ Book,” so that Black children could know they were thought about and loved. I wanted to know, what is this book? I fell in love with it. Du Bois was one of the most revered, important, booked and busy intellectuals of his time, but he carved out time in his schedule to create this book because he thought this much of Black children.

We as Black people, as Black creatives, as Black intellectuals, are not bound by anything. CP: We built it as a family book. You are never too old or too young to go after your dreams. I don’t consider myself a writer, but I had stories to tell. Our youngest artist was 18 at the time of contributing, and the youngest writer was 4.

How does connecting art with history make it more accessible? CP: Art is a cultural experience. There is something there for everyone. These are representations of us from a visual standpoint. We’re dealing with life and death, dealing with funny stories. There are fantastic stories from the original 1920-21 issues, and 100 years later, we’re still talking about these things and emphasizing these messages. KLB: There is something that is completely timeless about art. It is telling an immortal story about the Black experience. The art is really

What inspired you to bring the project back? CP: One of the messages Du Bois made called to us: for the Children of the Sun to know that they are loved. There could never be enough of us reminding our children that they are loved and encouraged. We wanted to emphasize and reiterate that message.

Why is it important to inspire creativity in children? CP: Sometimes, when we look at our youth, we’re like, “We’re lost; what are we going to do?” There can be an emphasis on the negative, but we do encounter brilliance. There are brilliant young people out there, and they’re saying, “We’re going to be fine.” We have to do everything that we can to encourage and push them forward.

What do you hope readers get from this book? CP: I hear about Black girl joy, Black boy joy, but I don’t hear enough about Black family joy. I hope it encourages a lot of conversations. THE NEW BROWNIES’ BOOK Why have you partnered with Page Turners Make Great Learners? KLB: Page Turners Make Great Learners is a phenomenal organization. They promote literacy amongst Atlanta youth, and the founder, FeFe Handy, understands all too well the power of reading, and the doors that open for children. Reading takes you anywhere in the world and can take you to other worlds. When we shared the idea of “The New Brownies’ Book” with FeFe, she was so excited, and she extended the opportunity to us. KLB: It is inaccurate the idea that any of us “did” history alone or in a vacuum. We wouldn’t get the American public school system we know today if we didn’t have the Freedmen’s Bureau pushing education during Reconstruction. When we talk about the contributions of Black Americans, their efforts, their creativity, we remix the whole country in ways that are not in a vacuum but have reverberated throughout the country. Not just Black kids, but all Americans have something to celebrate about Black history.

How does “The New Brownies’ Book” showcase Black history? KLB: There is a whole chapter called “Young Langston.” His first works were published by Du Bois in the original book. We’ve republished all those works, and beyond reading the material for what it is, it’s highlighting for families that he was submitting work as a teenager, which can serve as inspiration to young people to start their craft early. There are 26 Black women of note in “She’roes.” There’s a quiz at the end of it. With the chapter “School Daze,” we highlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities. There’s a chance to engage within these pages, and then, go do something with that knowledge.

I hear about Black girl joy, Black boy joy, but I don’t hear enough about Black family joy. I hope it encourages a lot of conversations. CP: I would like to tell parents to please pick up the book in order to experience it. It truly is an experience. You never know what’s going to be on the pages until you turn to the next one. It ends with a piece I did on a musician that I honestly didn’t know anything about. There was an attempt to wipe away his history by the government in France. It was intentional to end with this piece — if you’re not careful, if you’re not researching, you’re going to forget or not even know the amazing things around the world that Black people have done. Health and wellness are popular search topics. From timely concerns like how to avoid the common cold or deal with seasonal allergies to more general terms like healthy eating and fitness plans, getting answers to your medical questions has never been easier. The catch? There is so much information available on the Internet and via social media, how do you know what to trust? Do you trade the speed and convenience of online medical advice for the reliability of a real-life medical professional? The good news is that you don’t have to! The latest trends in healthcare make getting quality medical care in a setting that is convenient for busy parents a reality.

Telemedicine

Technically defined by the National Institutes of Health as the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology, many think of telemedicine as the “Zoom meeting” version of a doctor’s appointment. This method of healthcare, also called Virtual Care, emerged in the 1970s, but developed more in the 1990s as technology was more widely available. However, the healthcare method has gained widespread popularity since 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. The main benefits of telemedicine are convenience, privacy and cost savings. Many telemedicine providers, including local hospital systems like WellStar and Piedmont HealthCare, offer access to care on the weekends and have on-demand appointment options. Patients

can log into a telemedicine visit from the comfort of their own home and discuss concerns without anyone else seeing them. Co-pays are typically less than a traditional office visit, plus there are no parking fees or other costs associated with telehealth visits. “Various healthcare professionals now efficiently use telehealth to provide care. For those with access to telehealth through apps, mobile browsers or at-home devices, it is revolutionizing patient-provider communication,” says Phindile Erika Chowa, MD, FACEP of EMCare 2U. Specifically, for pediatric patients, telemedicine can have its limits as many conditions, such as ear infections or strep throat, can be difficult to diagnose without a physical exam. Blueberry Pediatrics, a telehealth provider exclusively for children, is trying to overcome this with their at-home kit of tools that includes a thermometer and ear scope with secure app integration.

Concierge Care House calls, as they were typically called, were the primary method of receiving medical care in America until about 1950. Today’s version of in-home looks a bit different than its predecessor, though, as it is usually combined with concierge medical service, allowing physicians to provide comprehensive regular care to patients. “Concierge medicine provides convenient access, particularly for individuals with mobility issues. This healthcare innovation caters to postpartum mothers, post-operative patients, individuals with busy schedules, and others who often experience significant stress trying to reach clinic appointments,” explains Chowa. “They can greatly benefit from receiving care in the comfort of their own homes throughout Atlanta.” This type of healthcare is based on membership with a provider. EMCare 2U offers monthly and annual options, starting at $97, that are designed for individuals and families who prioritize convenience, customized care and direct access to medical professionals. “Concierge medicine creates a tailored plan that should parallel a doctor-patient relationship built on trust and empathy. The ultimate goal of concierge medicine is to bring opportunities for healthy living, preventative care and direct care into people’s homes,” says Chowa.

Do they take insurance?

Drive-Thru Healthcare When you picture a drive-thru, fries and shakes are what you think of, but thanks to a new trend, medical care needs can be addressed without ever getting out of the car. Born out of the COVID-19 drive-thru testing services they offered, a few local businesses have expanded to be able to address a myriad of medical care needs. “Anything that you would go to urgent care for other than a broken bone, we can address while you stay in your car,” explains Stacy Lathrop CEO of SmartMED in Roswell. Lathrop notes that the majority of patients are parents because of the convenience associated with Drive-Thru medicine. “When the whole house gets sick, you’re not sure what it is, and you don’t have the energy to get everyone dressed and to the pediatrician’s office, you can stay in the car, everyone can get swabbed or ears checked. And, you’re out of the drive-thru in 10 minutes,” says Lathrop. At SmartMED, all tests are run on-site, and a medical provider follows up with results and any needed prescriptions within about an hour. Roswell mom Laura Longergan tried drive-thru medical care based on a friend’s recommendation when she had a sick kid and couldn’t immediately get into the pediatrician. atlantaparent.com

THE CAMP

You’ve gone online and asked everyone you know for recommendations in your search for overnight camps for your kids. How do you find the one that’s just right for them? When you’ve narrowed down the options to a handful or less, it’s time to speak to the camp directors by phone or email. Below is a list of some of the most important questions to ask.

Is the camp accredited, how old is it, and how long have you owned or managed it?

It’s a good sign if the camp is licensed by the American Camp Association (ACA). To earn accreditation, a camp must satisfy 300 industry standards for health, safety and program quality. Every three years, the ACA visits the camp to verify that it’s in compliance. It’s also a good sign if the camp has been in existence for many years (kids are coming back year after year), and if the director is experienced at running camps.

What’s your philosophy? Camps can be very different. Some camps, especially ones focused on specific sports, can be quite competitive. Other camps are more aimed at instilling certain values, like comradery, cooperation and conflict-resolution. Make sure that the camp’s philosophy matches your own values.

How do you build community? One of the most satisfying parts of being at camp is to feel a part of a larger community. Ask about community-building activities, like whether there are nightly camp fires or sing-alongs for the entire camp, cabin-specific activities and more.

What are the accommodations like? Ask whether the kids sleep in cabins or tents, whether there are bathrooms and showers nearby and, most importantly, whether your kids can request to room with friends from home. Whether your kids are first-time or seasoned campers, it’s always comforting and great fun to room with one or more of their regular friends.

How much does it cost? You probably don’t need any reminders to ask about the camp fee. But don’t forget to ask whether that fee is all-inclusive, or whether there are additional costs for day or overnight trips, transportation to and atlantaparent.com

THE PROGRAM How long are the sessions, can they be lengthened or shortened, and how long do most campers stay? Most camps offer sessions of a specific length, often two, four or eight weeks. However, if you have other things planned for the summer, it can be useful to either shorten or lengthen a session to fit your schedule. Most kids like to stay as long as the other kids: assuming they’re having a great time, no kid wants to be the one getting picked up before everyone else.

What do the kids do on a typical day?

Try to get a sense of what your kids will be doing on a typical day, including how much time is devoted to indoor and outdoor activities, and what they’ll be doing in the evening. This will help you decide whether it’s the right camp for them.

How do you handle discipline and conflicts between campers?

Ask questions that help you decide whether the camp’s parenting philosophy and practices agree with your own. You also want to make sure that your kids are aware of who they’re supposed to speak to in case they have conflicts with other campers, and what kind of behavior can result in serious consequences, up to and including dismissal. One of the best signs of a high-quality camp is that it has strict procedures for hiring, training and supervision of camp counselors. This includes criminal background checks, first aid training and regular feedback sessions. It’s also a good sign if most of the counselors return for several summers (they’re obviously enjoying the experience). The APA recommends that the counselor-camper ratio should be relatively low (between 1:6 and 1:12).

Is there a medical facility with qualified personnel? A top-notch camp will either have a licensed physician or nurse on the premises, a well-stocked supply of commonly-used medications and procedures in place for dispensing medication to all the kids who

Generally speaking, the larger the camp, the more activities, and the smaller the camp, the more intimate it feels. Likewise, the higher the return rate, the more satisfied the kids (and parents) are with the whole camp experience.

How do you deal with homesickness? Even the most seasoned campers can get homesick. Ask how the camp handles it. Do they encourage campers to call home? Do you get to visit them outside official visiting days? Do they have strategies to help campers cope and redirect their attention?

How can your kids stay in touch with their counselors after camp has ended? Kids often develop strong bonds with their counselors. Ask whether they’re encouraged to stay in touch after camp has ended (who knows, your kids’ favorite counselor could end up being their babysitter). Some camps also host events throughout the year for counselors and campers. It’s a great way to keep in touch until next year’s camp. atlantaparent.com

LET YOUR EYES PLAY TRICKS ON YOU

AT THE MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS Things are definitely not always as they appear when you visit The Museum of Illusions. My crew of 5th graders had a blast exploring the interactive elements of the museum and learning how each illusion works. I enjoyed it as well and recommend checking it out for these reasons:

Great Photo Ops

A lot of the fun from the exhibits are the photos that reveal the illusions. There are markers on the floor to guide you about where to stand to take the photos or take advantage of the museum’s built-in cameras by scanning the ticket they give you when you arrive. This is especially helpful if you only have two in your party as many of the illusions require two or more people to get the full effect.

Lots of Laughs

Thanks to the wacky photo reveals and silly positions you may find yourself in, there was plenty of laughing during our visit. My son and his friend got a huge kick out of pretending each other were the main dish and seeing how their sizes changed in the various exhibits.

The Vortex Tunnel

This was by far the kids’ favorite thing! I have to warn other parents, though. It was my least favorite thing, and I spoke to a couple of other moms who agreed. Though the walkway itself is stationary, it REALLY feels like you are walking through space, so if you don’t like roller coasters or get motion sickness, I suggest just waiting by the exit of the tunnel like I did while the boys went through the tunnel at least a dozen times!

A Little Learning Along the Way

Each of the experiences from color illusions to spatial ones and everything in between are explained in just a few sentences. It’s great for older kids because they can read the information themselves and, for younger kids, you can easily tell them how and why the illusion worked.

Know Before You Go: n To make your experience smooth, be sure to buy a timed entrance ticket before you arrive. The tours are self-guided, so the number of people per entry is limited. Lines did still form at a few of the more interactive or illusions, but they moved quickly. n The Museum is located on an upper level at Atlantic Station near the “number 5” parking marker. You can also park closer to “number 2” but will have to walk a bit more. The first two hours of parking are free, so if you only do the Museum, you won’t have to pay to park. n Try to limit how much stuff you bring into the Museum with you. Many of the illusions are active, so having your hands free is helpful. – Tali Benjamin
