editor’sletter Inside and Out

In every issue of Atlanta Home Improvement we strive to include topics that address both

Frameless Shower Doors Antique Mirrors Cabinet Door Glass Glass Shelves and Tops Color Glass and Backsplashes

NEW MIDTOWN SHOWROOM

the inside and outside of the home. This issue is no different. Beginning with the outdoors, check out our feature on theme gardens. Theme gardens are a great way to express your unique style and provide a vision for your landscape. From sprawling cottage gardens to easyto-maintain container gardens, there is a theme garden for every lifestyle. Did you know there is even such a thing as a moon garden? Filled with fragrant white flowers to reflect moonlight, they’re a neat idea for adding enjoyment to those warm summer nights. With the help of a landscape professional, I’m sure you can get away with blending several of your favorite styles in different areas of your yard. Is your child outgrowing the décor in his or her room? It may be time for a redesign that will carry them through their teen years. In this issue, local interior designers weigh in on how to create a stylish and personalized look that both you and your child can live with. There is also a great product roundup from ProjectJunior.com featuring items that make the “big kid” room transition easier. I think parents everywhere will enjoy this home interiors feature. Touching every corner of the home, both inside and out, is this month’s annual maintenance and repair checklist. The checklist takes the guesswork out of keeping your home in top shape and offers guidance for performing the annual home inspection experts recommend. If you encounter a problem along the way, you may be able to make a simple repair on your own, or you may need to call on a professional

New Showroom Now Open

How can I make my hardwoods look good as new? Except in cases of severe damage, hardwood floors can be sanded and refinished by removing a thin layer of wood containing polyurethane and stain. The newly exposed wood can be restained and restored to its original luster. Sanding and refinishing can be done on hardwoods in otherwise good condition simply to change the color. Hardwoods can also be recoated to remove surface marks. This process will not remove deep scratches or allow you to change the wood’s color. Recoating the wood every five years or so extends the time between resands. —Janice Howell, vice president, MODA Floors & Interiors, www. modafloors andinteriors.com

If you’re looking to transform a space for the little one in your life, a good starting point could be your child’s personal wish list. Creating a fabulous room for kids 12 and under calls for getting him or her “involved in the design process,” says Terrell Dinkins, residential interior designer and owner of Posh Interiors, LLC, www.poshinteriorsllc.com, in Atlanta.

“Bright colors and bold patterns are trends in general, but easily transfer to children’s rooms,” says Terri Ervin, regional director, Georgia, for Decorating Den Interiors, www.local.decoratingden. com/tervin. “One wall of a bold graphic wall covering will add a lot of fun to the room. Little girls seem to be drawn to black-and-white zebra print mixed with pink or turquoise.” Bold colors such as pink and green “add contrast to other textures in the room and can really illustrate the child’s personality, where a color like gray can be more elegant and a lot more androgynous,” says Kristine Cupid, marketing assistant for Smyrna-based Design2Sell Interiors & Home Staging, www.homedesign2sell.com. Cupid also is a fan of vinyl wall decals. “You can get them in an array of different sizes and shapes like a tree from the floor to the ceiling or oversized cupcakes,” she says. One source for these peel-and-stick coverings, Ervin points out, is WallPops, www.wallpops. com, which are designed for moving, reusing and repositioning. “They are inexpensive, colorful and easy to create a custom look,” says Ervin. “If your child decides they don’t like them anymore, they are very easy to change. Or if you move, they can be taken down and repositioned on a new wall.” Another trend is personalization. “Personalizing is a great way to make the space feel like yours,” says Rachel Greathouse of Rachel Greathouse Design, www.rachelgreathousedesign.com. “Add a big painted letter to the door or monogram a favorite pillow.” Studio M Interiors, www. studiominteriors.net, chose a monogram wall appliqué to help make a tween’s bedroom her own during a recent project.

Mix it up

Since children’s rooms are multifunctional spaces for sleeping, playing, dressing and arts and crafts, Dinkins suggests parents also consider “mixing in what I would consider traditional adultroom accessories. We have seen the pretty chandeliers in girls’ rooms. Now people are using dome-shade overhead lighting and chandeliers in boys’ rooms. One of my favorite trends is using vintage pieces in place of traditional pieces.”

Furniture, says Vicki Gladle-Bolick, a certified interior decorator with Bolick Interiors, LLC, www.bolickinteriors.com, in Atlanta, “is becoming more ‘grown-up’ with youthful touches. Homeowners don’t want cutesy kid spaces any longer, but want to ensure that the design evolves with their child, and that with a few minor changes over the years, the furnishings can take their kids well into their teenage years and beyond.” To achieve this, she says that the majority of the budget should go toward anchor pieces such as dressers, nightstands and desks. Cupid agrees, adding “Use less expensive items like accent pieces, which can easily be changed in the future.” “Try your local flea market, garage sales and thrift stores for furniture,” says 24

Bright and bold are the buzzwords when it comes to the latest trends in room designs for children. Today you’ll find “fun and bold geometric patterns such as chevron or stripes in rugs, bedding, walls or the back of a bookshelf,” says Wendy Beville, owner of Defining Spaces, www.definingspacesinc.com, in Marietta.

While the journey may prove exciting for both child and parent, be careful not to let enthusiasm — more than budget — drive you. “Don’t spend the entirety of your budget in the beginning,” adds Carvelli. “Allow a yearly budget where every three to six months something can be updated or added to keep him or her intrigued in the space.”

“The best designs are easily adaptive so they can evolve with the child,” says Dana Carvelli, design assistant at Atlanta’s Pineapple House Interior Design, www.pineapplehouse.com. Possibilities include incorporating the child’s hobbies or interests.

Check in with your child to gauge what he or she likes, adds Dinkins: “Do they want a theme room? What colors do they like? The child might want a bright color for the wall. Mom might not like this idea. Come up with a compromise on the color and use the color in accessories. This is just a consideration if you do not want to change out the paint color on the wall in a few years.” While a theme may be a good idea, Dinkins and other design professionals suggest that you still choose carefully so you don’t end up with something the child grows out of quickly.

We love Oeuf for their sleek sustainability but also because their “Perch” bunk is not as high off the ground as some others. Their lower bunk also offers plenty of height for mom and dad during story time. Source: Polka Dot Peacock, www.polkadotpeacock.com More about product: http://tinyurl.com/bgeuz2x

Small rattles and classic stacking toys will soon become obsolete. Make room for even more educational toys, loads of Legos and a costume collection that will put your own closet to shame. 5. The Trundle. First comes the transition into a “big kid” room,

Greathouse. “After a little TLC and a fresh coat of paint or some new fabric, these pieces can save your budget and bring great character to the space.” Another smart investment, says Jenny Warner, president of J. Thomas Designs, www.jthomasdesigns.com, is window treatments. “Having room-darkening shades or drapes is great for naptime, sick days, going to bed in summertime when it is still light and kids think they should still be up, and maybe getting your kids to sleep a little longer on the weekend!” Other touches may include a study or reading area with poufs, ottomans or oversized pillows, along with your child’s own artwork, family photos and gallery-wrapped canvas art. “Whether it be a special piece that is showcased in a frame or gallery wrapped or a great area dedicated to displaying daily artwork, it makes them feel special and gives you a place to put projects that isn’t all over the fridge,” adds Warner. Also, “I think it is super important to have family photos in a child’s room. It reminds them of how loved they are and helps younger kids remember their relatives.”

Safety and storage

Whether you choose to work with a professional or take on a do-it-yourself role, think safety and storage, professionals warn. Children starting as young as three years old “are inclined to rough housing and active play,” Ervin says, “so I try to limit sharp corners and breakable materials,” by using metal or wood lamps versus glass, for example. “Storage is also an important feature. So much of kids’ toys, stuffed animals, etc., can create a messy look in a room. So having storage for those items helps eliminate the cluttered look and keep the items organized.”

“If you have a small space, try to use wall space for storage by adding floating shelves or cubbies,” says Annalisa Thomas, president and CEO of Oilo, www.oilostudio.com. “It’s also a good way to add dimension to a room if you have a huge empty wall.” Thomas also suggests picking furniture with solid or frosted-glass doors or bookshelves with baskets to conceal clutter.

You may find you’re ready to take on the project on your own — perhaps with a bit of design direction through a consultation with a professional. Or if going it alone proves too much, you can call on expert help, making sure to share your thoughts and your budget on the front end. Either way, the payoff will be a dream room your child can look forward to calling his or her own as a place to play, create and rest — even more reason to Scan for more photos cherish those childhood years.

pringtime is here, and it’s time to fill your yard with flowers. Want to get a little more creative with this year’s landscaping? Consider combining some of the thousands of plants that thrive in Georgia to build a unique themed garden. “The important thing is to match the personality of your home, complement the natural terrain and choose a theme that is conducive to your lifestyle,” says Avi Moyal of Atlanta Curb Appeal, www. atlantacurbappeal.com. Whether you prefer a peaceful Japanese garden, a compact container garden or a cottage garden that overflows with color, there are endless options for bringing an artistic look to your yard.

Japanese Gardens Creating a Japanese garden comes down to combining just the right elements, from plantings to hardscapes. “Japanese gardens, historically, were designed to replicate the natural landscape of Japan; an island country, mountainous, with streams and tall trees,” says Lucinda Bray of Floralis Garden Design, www.floralisdesign.com. “This original theme has carried through to the now common symbolic elements of Japanese gardens.” These elements include water features, rock formations, statues, bamboo, miniature trees and soft moss.

“Water is a critical element in Asian gardening,” says John Kenna of Water, Color & Stone, www.watercolorstone. com. “Whether it’s a simple fountain or a waterfall with a pool, it’s a must! Large ‘character’ boulders create a feeling of timelessness and a sense that the garden has been there for a long time.” You can add privacy and serenity to your garden by using bamboo and other plantings to screen the area from the rest of the yard. Subtle hardscaping is especially important in Japanese gardens. “The blend of hardscape (stone, sand, statuary) and softscape (trees and small plants) is reflective of the yin and yang in creation – the central theme of a Japanese garden – ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL 2013

and exudes serenity and balance in the garden,” says Tina Cook of Shady Grove Landscape Company, www. shadygrovelandscapecompany.com. You might want to incorporate small fountains, bridges, stone steps and lanterns. If you have the space, a small teahouse or pergola can also add to the Japanese feel. Overall, keep space in mind. “One of the most important elements is the use of negative space,” says Holly Brooks of King Landscaping, www.erickinglandscaping.com. “The Japanese use strong, powerful elements like boulders, lanterns or carefully pruned specimens surrounded by negative space, such as gravel, moss or a low-growing ground cover.” When choosing plants, consider small trees that you keep closely pruned, and surround them with a variety of lowgrowing greenery. 30

Container Gardens If a Japanese garden sounds too tough to tackle right now, think simpler: A container garden will allow you to get creative without spending much time or money. Most garden centers sell readymade containers already bursting with a variety of plants. If you want to make your own, though, start with a large decorative planter and fill it with a variety of plants. These expert tips will help you get started (see our website for “Building a Container Garden” information): • Plant a variety of fragrant flowers with a pop of color. Also, variegated plants are very popular because they offer a variety of colors and will last throughout the year, offering lower maintenance. —Avi Moyal, Atlanta Curb Appeal •

ixing textures and varying the heights of plantings creates interest

in container gardens. Don’t hesitate to add small rocks or an interesting piece of lichen-covered driftwood for interest, as well. —John Kenna, Water, Color & Stone Inc. •

ne of the most popular container gardens is edible. It doesn’t have to be tomatoes – herbs such as a rosemary centerpiece with edible nasturtiums for color and some trailing chocolate mint is a beautiful combination. Try Jerusalem Artichokes or Red Mustard with pansies in the fall. —Holly Brooks, King Landscaping

• A great container plant that can sustain cool temperatures is parsley. The texture is nice and goes great with pansies and tulips. Plus, in the springtime, the Swallowtail caterpillars (soon to be butterflies love them. —Mark Schisler, Legacy Landscapes, www.legacylandscapes.com www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

• If you want a low maintenance container, try succulents and arid region plants such as Sedums, ucca, Agave and Delosperma. —Betsey Norton, Going Green Horticultural, www.goinggreenhorticultural.com

Cottage Gardens For those who love bursts of color and lots of variety in the garden, a cottage garden might be the right choice. he origin of cottage gardens is based on the old English traditional design that depends more on charm and massive planting and less on the formal structure, oyal says. It s very common for cottage gardens to combine ornamental plants, which can be used for cuttings to create flower arrangements, with edibles like vegetables and herbs. he plants are arranged very close together to www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

0413_028-035_theme-gardens.indd 31

give the impression of abundance. Cottage gardens of yesterday and today have the common thread of appearing to burst at the seams, so lush and full that another plant couldn t possibly t, but at the same time not messy or overgrown, rooks says. Choose an area of your yard that gets plenty of sun, and start planting ften, people will sow a cottage garden in a spot where they can view it from a window or porch, especially since it s likely to attract birds and butterflies. rellises are an elegant addition, too, and they offer a place for vines to grow. Some of the plants that landscapers en oy using in this type of garden are roses, lily of the valley, clematis, peony, foxglove, salvia, butterfly bush, black eyed Susan, dianthus, yarrow, verbena, hydrangea, catmint, garden phlox,

delphinium, snapdragon, mock orange, Siberian iris, boxwood and purple coneflower. A variety of herbs may be mixed in, as well. Cottage gardens usually offer a burst of color and fragrance while having a sense of organi ed chaos, says en Hilliard of Selective Designs, www.selectivedesigns.com. When planting your garden, try marking off the space in your yard with paving stones arranged in a whimsical shape, then ll the area in with a plethora of plants. Curvilinear bed designs and drifts of plants entice one to take that next turn to discover what that heavenly scent may be or what floral treasure exists around the bend, Cook says. What seems to be fortuitous simplicity in the cottage garden is what lends it its grace and charm. ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL

Timeless Themes Many other garden themes are also popular in Georgia. For example, you might try a classic Southern garden, which is lush and full of heavily flowering plants like hydrangeas, gardenias, azaleas and boxwoods. Or consider planting a monochromatic, color-themed garden that focuses on your favorite hue, from pink to yellow to green. “We recently did a white-themed garden, with Becky daisy, white astilbe, white drift rose, white alyssum and white perennial salvia, and it was very soothing,” Schisler says.

C

Timeless theme

If you don’t want to take on a full vegetable garden, plant a small kitchen garden made up of beautiful edibles. “I plant ‘blooming salad bars’ every fall and spring,” Kenna says. “The foliage from the carrots and parsley is wonderful by itself and when planted alongside broadleaf herbs and flowers.” Butterfly gardens are also popular, attracting not only butterflies but also small birds. Try filling this type of garden with Buddleia davidii, butterfly bush and Echinacea species coneflowers. If you love sweet scents, create a fragrant garden with plants like the Osmanthus Fragrans fragrant tea olive and the Calycanthus Floridus sweetshrub. It’s also simple to create Photo courtesy of Arcoiris Design Gardening a native-themed garden. “Native plant gardens highlight Atlanta’s rich array of native plants that are adapted well to our soil and climate,” Cook says. And for the night owls? A moon garden that’s filled with fragrant plants and white flowers that capture the moonlight will be a special treat in the warmer months. Remember, you can always pick your own theme based on colors, textures, outdoor accessories and more. “To create and maintain a themed garden, choose plants that you are excited about, and integrate your personality into your garden,” Bray says. “Add a piece of art, a homemade bird feeder, or mix some vegetable plants into your garden palette to make your space both beautiful and functional.” Editorial Resources begin on page 64

First, check their exterior condition by looking at sash and frame joints and all caulk lines, both on the window and along the window frame, where it meets your home’s exterior. Look for discoloration, splitting wood, wood rot and worn-down caulk joints. If you find these conditions, fix immediately. Otherwise, water can penetrate into your wall cavities. Next, check your glass. If you have single-pane windows, check for any cracks. If you have insulated glass, look for a seal failure, which shows itself as fog, condensation or a milky appearance between the glass panels. Finally, check the windows’ locks, weather-stripping and operation. If your windows are in poor condition, your home’s energy efficiency will be noticeably affected. —Pella Windows and Doors, www.pella.com

Check Your Water Heater Once a year, check the temperature and pressure valve on your water heater by lifting up the lever partially, then letting it snap back into place. This process should allow the water to be released into the relief line. If nothing happens, it may need to be replaced (Call a plumber). Avoid the Pressure “I never recommend pressure washing windows or doors or even your home exterior. It is like forcing hurricane-strength winds to blow water in every crack and crevice, which could take months to dry out if the water penetrated your walls, causing mold and mildew to grow undetected. Also, if you’re looking to paint your exteriors, pressure washing beforehand forces water into any wood surfaces, causing the resulting paint job to peel off of the wood in a short period of time.” —Hal Lipsky, Window Replacements of Georgia, www.windowreplacementsga.com, Marietta

Check your basement for moisture and rotten wood. There could be a leaky pipe in the walls, a downspout that isn’t draining away from the house or possibly moisture coming in through a cracked concrete foundation.

Waterproofed! Think your only option for waterproofing your deck is to sand and stain yearly? Think again! Duradek offers a vinyl membrane waterproofing system with a 10-year warranty (no reapplication required). The waterproofing function has been known to last two to three times longer than the warranty. This way, you don’t have to wait for a dry spring day to spend staining and sealing, worrying in the meantime about water infiltrating the decking system and the building envelope. —Duradek Georgia

3 Overlooked Items 1. Anode rod. Located in a water heater’s tank, the anode rod attracts chemicals in the water and keeps them from rusting the tank liner. Designed to rust (so your tank liner won’t), the anode rod will last approximately four to five years and should be replaced so the rust won’t affect the tank, cause leaks and decrease life expectancy. 2. Furnace filter. Often forgotten by homeowners, changing the furnace filter regularly prevents the furnace blower wheel, evaporator coil and internal components from becoming dirty, which can result not only in poor air quality, but premature failure of parts, overheating of the exchanger, low airflow and high utility bills. 3. Air-conditioning condensate drain. Twice a year, you should flush out the drain at the evaporator coil outlet by pouring up to two gallons of water into the condensate drain. To prevent stoppage and clean the pan, add an EPA-approved drain pan treatment to the evaporator pan. If this is not done, the condensate drain can clog, causing ceiling damage if the system is located in the attic or floor damage if located in a basement or closet. —Information provided by Rescue Rooter Atlanta and R.S. April is the perfect time to start your vegetable garden. With the cost of fresh food on the rise, combined with the promise of better nutrition and flavor, growing your own food is more than just fun. You can plant from seed or make the job faster and easier by buying already started plants in six-packs or four-inch containers.

Plant annual and perennial flowers, vines and ornamental grasses. Check out this year’s unique plant introductions to snap up a perfect, newly developed variety that is bound to make your neighbors jealous. Remember to give extra water to all your newly planted additions.

3

Think ahead and plant drought-tolerant perennials that will put on a show in late summer and fall. Salvias, asters, mums, eupatorium, chelone and helianthus are good choices.

5

A sharp mower blade and cutting at the right height promotes healthy, water-efficient turfgrass. For calendars with complete information about Georgia turfgrass, visit http://www. commodities.caes.uga.edu/turfgrass/georgiaturf/CultPrac/1310_ Calendar.htm.

Warm-season turf should be greening up nicely this month, so apply fertilizer when the lawn is about 50% green. Follow guidelines on label for correct application. After full green-up, this is a great time to aerate warm-season turf (centipede, zoysia, Bermuda). Cool-season turf such as fescue should be aerated in the fall.

Set your irrigation system timers to match the longer, drier days. Fix pipe leaks and broken heads so you don’t waste water or allow unwatered areas to dry out.

7

6

Weeds can get out of control quickly, so mulch well to help prevent weeds in your vegetable, annual and perennial gardens. It’s a good time to spread pre-emergent in your planting beds to decrease weed production.

Look for aphids clustered at the tips of fast-growing crape myrtle branches. Blast them off with a water hose and give a ground-dwelling spider a nice lunch.

9

4

8

Prune spring-blooming shrubs – forsythia, azalea, rhododendrons – after blooms have faded. Take care with hydrangea pruning – wait until August for mopheads and consult UGA’s hydrangea fact sheet to determine when to prune other varieties: http://apps.caes.uga.edu/urbanag/index.cfm?storyid=2497.

Water houseplants more frequently with the onset of more hours of sunshine and new green leaves. Begin monthly feedings with houseplant fertilizer. Orchids, Christmas cactus and other flowering houseplants enjoy a shady spot outdoors in the spring and summer months.

choice. Granite is readily available, provides an array of colors and patterns, has a standardized installation process and is accepted by the marketplace. Besides, it’s impervious, impenetrable, indestructible… well, not quite. Granite, like any natural material, varies in its characteristics from one slab (in this case) to another. The swirl of minerals in the molten metamorphic mass (sorry) produces a grain not unlike that of beautifully complex burl wood. Similarly, there are areas of greater and lesser density and planes of fracture. That is all part of the trade-off that comes with choosing something that is unique. Granite may be divided into convenient types or species, but your particular slab is not identical to any other. How do we protect, clean and preserve this bit of nature’s incomparable creativity? First, recognize that granite is not indestructible. If you bang it with a frying pan, will it not chip? If you overstress

bottom of cook-pots and coasters to shield it from the scratches of unglazed coffee cup bottoms. While the granite itself is impervious to heat, epoxy resin surfacing, frequently used in the industry, is not. It will soften under the assault of a still bubbling saucepan. The cleaning principle is pretty straightforward. Use a ph-neutral cleaner. Ask your installer to recommend one. Don’t use abrasive cleaners, and avoid glass cleaners (potentially acidic). Blot up spills quickly, and keep the surface grime-

and grit-free with a clean, soft cloth. Preservation will probably come in the same kit with the cleaner your granite professional suggests. Typically, the granite care package includes cleaner and sealer. With gentle use, you will not need to restore the sealer more frequently than every couple of years, perhaps even less frequently, depending on the characteristics of your individual stone. of the material at hand. If you have an existing installation, try and identify the particular granite variety as a basis for best cleaner/sealer choice. Please, do not wax, neither paste, nor spray. Several million years were required for the production of your countertop. With a little protection, cleaning and preservation, it should certainly last a few decades more.

cahptalk It’s Electric!

Tips for choosing a surge protector Let’s talk about surge protection and why everyone needs surge suppression, commonly known as surge protection. Every home that is supplied with electricity from a utility company gets up to ten thousand surges a day. Most of the surges are small and the common appliance can handle it, but it lessens the life of the appliance.

Carpet • Ceramic Tile • Hardwood • Vinyl • Laminates Area Rugs • Expert Installations

How much can you Afford to Lose?

Surge sources inside your home may come from units “WE WILL GROW WITH YOUR GARDEN” such as your refrigerators, J L I N pumps D E R D E or S I G N A N D C O N S U L T A N T . C freezers, air conditioners, treadmills, irrigation virtually any electric motor turning off and on. Home office equipment such as paper shredders may also contribute to the surge problem. There are many more surge sources in businesses, depending on your business. There are two parts of surge protection. The first is making sure your home is bonded and grounded. Call a licensed electrician to ensure that your home is properly grounded. The next step is choosing a good surge protector. There are many different surge devices you can choose from. The best way to choose a good surge protector is to look at the joule rating. Remember that the idea is you want to protect your valuable equipment. If you buy a surge protector with a high joule rating, you are less likely to replace it in the event of a major surge. You will spend more money on a higher rated surge protector, but it will save you money in the long run. I would suggest a whole-home protector rated at 2,500 joules or more. The Cutler Hammer Ultra is by far the best we install at 2,880 joules and comes with a very good warranty (lifetime) and dollar replacement policy. There are hundreds of brands on the market. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Choose wisely.

wood can be restained and restored to its original luster. Sanding and refinishing can be done on hardwoods in otherwise good condition simply to change the color. Hardwoods can also be recoated to remove surface marks. This process will not remove deep scratches or allow you to change the wood’s color. Recoating the wood every five years or so extends the time between resands. —Janice Howell, vice president, MODA Floors & Interiors, www. modafloors andinteriors.com

pringtime is here, and it’s time to fill your yard with flowers.

Japanese Gardens

Creating a Japanese garden comes down to combining just the right elements, from plantings to hardscapes.

Looking to update an outdated 1980s master bathroom, these Roswell homeowners sought a spa-like atmosphere for their new space. First, the floor plan was redesigned to be more user-friendly, including larger his-andhers closets. Next, outdated fixtures and materials were replaced with new ones. Photos courtesy of Cindi with an Eye Photography

Multi-spray showerheads, a jetted soaking tub by MTI Baths and crystal knobs/ pulls were selected to create a sense of tranquility. Herringbone-pattern tile floors are low-maintenance and make the room look bigger, while more natural light, a request of the homeowners, is brought in by a new window over the tub.
