There’s a new resident at Zoo Atlanta. Welcome Hamlet, an almost-2-year-old male warthog from the Houston Zoo in Texas who now lives at the attraction’s African Savanna complex. A companion for Eleanor, the zoo’s 6-year-old female warthog, Hamlet joins recent addition Mumbles, a 9-year old Southern white rhinoceros that’s the first of his species to call Zoo Atlanta home. www.zooatlanta.org
View an Exhibition
The first major traveling exhibition presenting the work of Ethiopian artist “Julie Mehretu” runs through the end of January at High Museum of Art. This comprehensive survey covers more than two decades of the artist’s work from 1996 to the present, combining about 40 drawings and prints with 35 paintings largely monumental in size and scale. Mehretu’s work involves diagrams and maps, cave markings, Chinese calligraphy and graffiti. www.high.org

In January, we celebrate the birthday and contributions of Atlanta native Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Events such as exhibits, children’s activities and concerts take place throughout the city.

Today, visitors to Atlanta can relive the history of the American civil rights movement by visiting Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, which includes a visitor center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, King’s birth home, the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame, the tombs of Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, and the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights Visit The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, where the exhibition “Rolls Down Like Water: The American Civil Rights Movement” features a history of Atlanta’s role in the movement. Walk up the stairs into a recreated Lorraine Hotel after viewing television clips of newscasters conveying stories of the violence occurring in our nation during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Immerse yourself in the history of

civil rights sit-ins as you perch at a mock lunch counter and try to remain calm and nonviolent as you listen through earphones to recordings of angry people shouting insults. View a panorama of the March on Washington and be mesmerized by the sights and sounds. The basement houses a rotating selection of Dr. King’s personal papers and items. Another level maintains a rotating view of the world’s human rights efforts and how it affects the lives of everyone.
One undisputed highlight is the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King, his father and grandfather all preached. No longer used for Sunday services (those are reserved for the new Ebenezer Church just across the street), the older church is open for self-guided tours. Visitors may sit in a pew and feel history envelope them as they listen to sermons by Dr. King. Next door, find the tombs of both Dr. and Mrs. King and the eternal flame that symbolizes Dr. King’s hope for justice, peace and equality. Inside Freedom Hall, see Dr. King’s key to room 307 at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis where he was assassinated, a draft of his Nobel Prize acceptance speech and awards he received.

Atlanta is a city within the forest and here are three lesser known places to hike and explore. OLMSTED LINEAR PARK
This park, laid out by architect Frederick Law Olmsted at the turn of the 20th century, is actually made up of six segments stretching around the east side of Atlanta, from Poncey-Highland to Decatur along Ponce de Leon Avenue. Located in the area of Druid Hills, the six segments of Springdale, Virgilee, Oak Grove, Shadyside, Dellwood and Deepdene (the largest with 22 acres) all have different landscapes, from mature oaks to knolls, groves and water features.

Its best feature is its stretch through Tanyard Creek Park, which is full of lush greenery and includes passage through a wooden bridge beneath the railroad line. Atlanta BeltLine Northside Trail
LIONEL HAMPTON-BEECHER HILLS PARK
Another well-protected slice of nature in the heart of Atlanta, the Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Park, is part of a roughly 100-acre nature preserve in southwest Atlanta. Nearly half of the four miles of trails here are paved, with paths following Utoy Creek where Civil War remains of Union fortifications are still visible. The park features a playground and easy access to the BeltLine Westside Trail.

Aria plans to serve its famed cuisine -- both à la carte and a seven-course tasting menu -- on the patio, under a tent. Reservations are available Tuesdays through Thursdays. Buckhead Life Restaurant Group owns two restaurants with outdoor spaces. Bistro Niko plans to feature outdoor dining with heaters, and Kyma will serve its acclaimed Greek food on the covered patio, complete with heaters, in the Kyma Garden through December. Over at Little Alley Steak Buckhead, the restaurant’s 2,500-square-foot patio includes an outdoor bar, lounge area and plenty of outdoor heaters. Joy Cafe plans to winterize its Peachtree
Road patio with several conventional propane heaters as well as a few propane tungsten heaters. The restaurant is also considering adding seat warmers and electric heating fans. Buckhead’s Gypsy Kitchen plans to have heaters and blankets to keep the fun going all year long. After each use, blankets will undergo a thorough sanitizing process. KR SteakBar has heaters in place, and servers wear masks so that diners can safely enjoy steaks and Italian cuisine while keeping warm. South City Kitchen Buckhead has outdoor seating surrounding an awesome fire pit.

TWO Urban Licks, located on the Atlanta BeltLine in Old Fourth Ward, has a dog-friendly patio that will feature fire pits perfect for enjoying the Midtown skyline. Cold Beer, the latest concept from acclaimed chef Kevin Gillespie, features such dishes as a New England hybrid lobster roll and bulgogi pork ribs. Enjoy them on a heated patio and watch the sights and sounds of the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. Bring your dog to Red’s Beer Garden in Grant Park where there will be plenty of heaters and more than 200 beers plus wine and seltzer on the menu.

Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall is ready for anything winter throws at it. The BeltLineadjacent restaurant plans to bring back Base Camp Tents that will be located in the eatery’s large, outdoor Grove space. Priced by the hour, the three 144-squarefoot tents will be open though the winter, and each will have its own food and drink menu. Murphy’s, a Virginia-Highland favorite, has invested heavily in patio heaters for those who want to dine outdoors. Murphy’s installed a Synexis air purification system that fights infectious microorganisms in the air for those dining indoors. Lazy Betty, one of the city’s most honored restaurants, already has heaters installed and shawls waiting to accommodate guests during the colder months. THE ROOF at Ponce City Market has a fun holiday program including an ice skating rink, fur coat mini-golf, outdoor fire pits, indoor heaters and heated pergolas. Also at Ponce City Market’s rooftop is 9 Mile Station, where igloos keep guests cozy. Renowned Chef Kevin Rathbun can seat at least 60 outdoors at Kevin Rathbun Steak, and Rathbun is investing in new heaters and wind barriers to maintain his outdoor seating and please guests.
BOONE’S: The neighborhood destination welcomes guests at Bobby Jones Golf Course with upscale, new American cuisine. Miracle on Peachtree alights in Buckhead as a grand new event, delivering festive, socially distanced celebrations. Lace up for the virtual buckheadRUN! 5K over Dec. 1-13. The second annual race has a new virtual format with participants running over an extended time period to allow for social distancing.
