Hiking and Biking around the City

From the Atlanta BeltLine to our vast array of parks, there are so many beautiful spots to stretch your legs with a brisk walk, morning run or family bike trip.

Westside Park

Atlanta’s newest and largest green space is Westside Park, a 280-acre jewel of outdoor space repurposed from a retired quarry that offers beautiful panoramic views and 2.5 miles of trails for walking, skating, bicycling and more. Continued on page 12

Stone Mountain Trail

This trail, connected with the PATH Foundation network of trails, is great for those staying in the Downtown area. Start at the John Portman Cycle Track at Centennial Olympic Park, then continue across Piedmont Avenue along the Freedom Parkway trail. This 19-mile trail ends at the loop around Stone Mountain. Silver Comet Trail

Imagine smooth cycling under towering pines, over bridges and between rock cliffs, all free from traffic. EXPLORE OUTDOORS WITH ATLANTA’S BLACK CYCLING CLUBS BY ALECIA ZACKERY

Atlanta has earned a few nicknames over the years. Most recently it is recognized as the City in a Forest. With great outdoor spaces nestled between our inner-city neighborhoods, there are many ways to explore the city too busy to hate. You’ll find skaters at Old Fourth Ward Skate Park and see people on scooters in Piedmont Park. Add to that, biking, which has taken over our Peachtree streets and avenues like never before. Groups have always hosted holidayfocused bike-a-thons and annual cycling and racing events, but none compare to the rise of Atlanta’s Black bikers who are taking the extracurricular sport to new heights.

Atlanta Cabbagetown BeltLine Trail

Among other notable trends, Atlanta’s Black community is strong, rich and diverse in cultural activities and activism. Social experiences that grab bystanders’ attention are charity events like Hosea Feed the Hungry Bike-A-Thon, Black-owned bike shops along Atlanta BeltLine’s Westside trail and inclusive bicycle groups such as Velo and Metro Atlanta Cycling Club.

NEW AND NOTABLE

Sara J. González Memorial Park

One of the newest Atlanta parks, the Sara J. González Memorial Park, opened in 2018, a tribute to González, a Cuban immigrant who became a voice for minority rights. The first park named for a Latin person in the State of Georgia, this Westside park includes a playscape designed for children of all abilities and the Edgar Flores Memorial Garden, named for the first Latinx police officer shot and killed in the line of duty

in Georgia. Founded in 2018 by her daughter Isabel González Whitaker, the park is built under four pillars that represent González’s life and work: diversity, family, community and unity. www.sarajgonzalezpark.org

Rodney Cook Sr. Park

Rodney Cook Sr. Park in Historic Vine City opened in 2021 and remakes Mims Park, Atlanta’s first integrated park, built by the world-renowned Olmsted Brothers. The park supports the community with

recreational programs and opportunities for local youth including neighborhood health and fitness programs, a fitness zone, a bouldering (free climbing) area, sport courts, open green space and a splash pad. Amenities within the park provide ways for the community to gather, connect and enjoy nature, including a destination playground, an amphitheater stage, market plaza, multipurpose courts, recirculating fountains, meandering boardwalks and interpretive overlooks. www.rodneycooksrpark.org

Sara J. • Update your denim at Pure Denim, 7 for All Mankind and Madewell. Lighter washes are in play and the skinny jean’s run may be ending as flared, wideleg and baggy styles take over. • Happy is back in. Versace, Tory

Burch and Lacoste always bring the color. Look for dreamy hues of lilac and sky, and lush, fruity pinks and melons. Raspberry might be the color winner across men’s and women’s clothing this season.

• Shoes are also brightening up. Nike’s Air Force 1 Fontanka and Lebron 19 pop in azure, coral and canary. Vans are going off the checkerboard with trippy florals and graffiti-ish Zodiac prints. Prada has chunky rubber slides and sandals in electric blue and yellow. • Keep it loose but styled with pieces from Free People, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters.
