Many of Atlanta’s popular attractions are eager to welcome guests back following COVID-19 closures, and opportunities for fun, fresh air and human interaction are what summer’s all about. ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN A 30-acre oasis in the heart of the city, Atlanta Botanical Garden has reopened both its outdoor and indoor spaces for guests with online timed ticketing and limits to visitor capacity. On the heels of last summer’s blockbuster exhibition “Imaginary Worlds: Alice’s Wonderland,” this summer’s “Alice’s Wonderland Reimagined” lures guests with larger-than-life topiary-like sculptures depicting characters from the classic tale. Joining last year’s sculptures are a new 16-foot Red Queen and 14-foot Alice rotating in the Howell Fountain pool. www.atlantabg.org
CHATTAHOOCHEE NATURE CENTER With 127 acres of trails, forests and wetlands along the Chattahoochee River, Chattahoochee Nature Center delivers plenty of space for social distancing. From wooded hiking trails and canoeing to ziplines, a Wildlife Walk aviary and Discovery Center

At this shrine to college football, guests can unlock a unique experience with an interactive All-Access Pass, peruse more than 50 engaging exhibits and learn about the top teams, players and coaches. A new exhibit dedicated to Historically Black Colleges and Universities debuts this summer highlighting the legendary players and history of the program. HIGH MUSEUM OF ART Be among the first to visit High Museum of Art when it reopens on Saturday, July 18. As the leading art museum in the Southeast, the High boasts a permanent collection of more than 15,000 works of art along with
a steady stream of blockbuster traveling exhibitions. When the museum reopens, guests can plan to attend Second Sundays, when museum admission is free from noon-5 p.m., and children can explore their creativity at the museum’s Summer Art Camps. PORSCHE EXPERIENCE CENTER ATLANTA Feel the need for speed? Rev your engines and head to Porsche Experience Center Atlanta where guests can take part in a thrilling 90-minute driving session to experience the performance and unique capabilities of Porsche vehicles on the facility’s 1.6-mile track. Among featured cars are the 911 Turbo, 911 GT3 and the new Taycan, Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle unveiled in September 2019. The Center’s Worlds of Puppetry Museum will reopen on July 10, including the Jim Henson Gallery, where visitors can bask in nostalgia with Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, Miss Piggy and many more familiar Muppets. Also in the Museum is the Global Collection Gallery, which features one of the largest collections of international puppets in the U.S. Live performances remain closed for a bit longer, but a new summer lineup of digital programming will include “Jack and the Beanstalk” and online interactive Create-APuppet Workshops for children ages four and up. Summertime in the great outdoors begins at Stone Mountain Park. WORLD OF COCA-COLA On July 15, this attraction dedicated to the world’s most famous soft drink will open. Guests will be able to see the Vault of the Secret Formula, the Pop Culture Gallery and the bottling process, and many more favorites.The Coca-Cola Polar Bear has even been schooled on social distancing and is ready to greet guests, with a few adjustments to his normal routine. Expect less people, timed tickets and face coverings required for everyone over the age of two. THRILLS AND CHILLS HIGH ABOVE THE GROUND SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel in downtown Atlanta is a perfect place to soar above the trees and get a bird’s eye view of the city. Gather in the Gardens

Atlanta History Center’s Goizueta Gardens: Stroll a variety of woodlands and gardens around the Center’s grounds, which includes 33 acres of cultivated gardens and shady forests in which to roam. Nine distinct curated gardens and preserved woodland are included, and is connected by trails that are easily walkable. Be sure to catch Olguita’s Garden, a formal English garden, and the Mary Howard Gilbert Memorial Quarry Garden. A limited number of visitors will be admitted every 30 minutes. Atlanta Botanical Garden: The Garden is now open for visitors, including the Children’s Garden. Stroll the picturesque grounds and view the newest outdoor exhibition: “Alice’s Wonderland Reimagined.” Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum: The library itself might be closed but it is surrounded by 35 acres of
beautiful ponds and rolling hills, which overlook downtown Atlanta. The easiest way to access the grounds are from the Atlanta BeltLine or Freedom Parkway Trail. Wander through, and take note that the Freedom Farmers Market operates in the parking lot every Saturday. Pemberton Place: Technically, Pemberton Place isn’t really a garden, but the expansive green lawn is perfect for picnics. Grab takeout from an adjacent local restaurant and settle on the lawn for skyline views, right in the midst of World of Coca-Cola (reopening July 15), Georgia Aquarium and National Center for Civil and Human Rights (reopening July 24).

NAVIGATING UNCHARTED WATERS AT GEORGIA AQUARIUM The world’s most magical aquarium is ready for visitors. BY LIESL MERKEL Georgia Aquarium reopened at the end of June and I took the family to see some of our familiar aquatic friends. It seems that wherever we have gone recently, there’s always the awkwardness of not knowing where to stand or what to do, no matter if we enter a grocery store or any other place. Everything that used to be familiar is now new, and the aquarium staff went out of their way to be accommodating with plenty of smiles underneath their masks. Special precautions have been put in place, including two timed ticket sessions and two entrances to welcome guests. Everyone is encouraged to wear a mask, visitors get a touchless temperature check upon entering, and information stations are outfitted with plexiglass to protect visitors and employees. One of the must-see stops at the aquarium is in the Cold Water Quest gallery, where the
new baby beluga whale lives with her mother Whisper and other beluga friends. Baby Shila was only a month old when we visited, and more plexiglass was put in place, both for distancing and also to keep Shila feeling safe with her new visitors. Many animals were very active, including the giant Pacific octopus and weedy sea dragons, as well as the southern sea otters in Cold Water Quest and the whale sharks - the world’s largest fish - in the Ocean Voyager gallery. Floor markings at each exhibit helped us remember to keep six feet apart from other guests. Even though the 4-D theater and Dolphin Celebration show are temporarily closed (you can still visit the dolphins), the aquarium makes sure guest experiences are still memorable. New starting July 1 is Sea Lions Up Close, which temporarily replaces the Under the Boardwalk presentation. Four families or small groups are allowed in at a time, and are paired with one of four charismatic sea lions. We were treated to a brief educational talk, asked questions and then interacted a bit with our sea lion ambassador named Katie. Then, we were able to take a socially distanced selfie with Katie.

For food, grab-and-go-options are available at Cafe Aquaria, and all dining tables have been moved upstairs to Oceans Ballroom in socially distanced spaces. From the start of our experience in the parking lot where every other parking space is marked off for safer access, to one-way directions in tight spaces, signage and more, Georgia Aquarium has worked hard to make sure guests feel comfortable in this new state of living. Bonus: Hand sanitizer is readily available in multiple locations, and it smells amazing. We walked away from our visit smelling like a tropical vacation. a butterfly, which is the neighborhood logo. Created around the turn of the century, the curved streets are home to grand Victorian homes, and these streets counted business moguls such as Asa Candler, founder of The Coca-Cola Co., among their residents.
GRANT PARK Grant Park is home to Zoo Atlanta, but the entire neighborhood is a charming enclave of houses going back to the 1880s. Cherokee Avenue is the main street, but again, spend time getting lost looking at the architecturally distinctive homes.

Take a Scenic Drive Through Atlanta

NORTHSIDE DRIVE Northside Drive is an epicenter of gorgeous, lush landscapes and lots of twists and turns. You might see a celebrity home or two. Producer Dallas Austin’s spaceship-style house is an easy one to spot. While you’re driving up Northside Drive, feel free to take a random left or right on streets such as East Conway, Jett Road and Garmon Road. These are mansion-filled streets.
WEST END Driving around Atlanta’s West End is a delightful ride, and you might take a short break and visit the Wren’s Nest, home of “Uncle Remus” author Joel Chandler Harris. Streets such as Lee, Gordon and Ashby feature historic homes including Craftsman bungalows, Queen Anne and Folk Victorian. The West End has always been where middle and upper middle class, and some downright rich, African-Americans lived, and today these beautiful homes exist near historic churches, vegan restaurants and a growing arts scene.
EXPERIENCE NATURE’S THRILL RIDE THIS SUMMER
ANSLEY PARK Ansley Park is another great neighborhood for marveling at the homes. Start at Peachtree Circle, behind Colony Square in Midtown and wind through the neighborhood that was developed between 1904 and 1930. You’ll find single-family residences and some new mega-mansions that replaced historic homes. Among the styles are Colonial, Federal, Italian Renaissance, Queen Anne and, well, let’s just say, eclectic. Winn Park and McClatchy Park bring even more greenery into an already well-landscaped area.

Our families visited Zoo Atlanta just after it reopened on May 16; we returned in late June. Having been multiple times before the COVID-19 pandemic and twice in the last five weeks, the kids consider themselves experts, so we decided to let them guide you through Zoo Atlanta. Rhys is the youngest at three years old, Cal and Karter are five, and Kyle is seven years old – the veteran of the crew.

A few notes regarding enhanced protocols and procedures: • Get your timed ticket online. All guests are required to reserve a time slot. • Masks are strongly encouraged and are available for purchase. Masks are required to enter The Living Treehouse, Naked Mole Rats and Scaly Slimy Spectacular.
• Bring snacks and plenty of water. • A few areas are temporarily closed including Nourish Cafe, Splash Fountain, train, carousel and Treetop Trail. Food and gifts are available at outdoor kiosks.
Now, a few words from our children: How do we enter Zoo Atlanta now? Cal: We go into the gates and we go straight across. We stand about this far apart (shows distance with his hand). Karter: I remember where to go and to be safe you hold my hand. There are lines and people in costumes to help you (Zoo Atlanta team in uniforms and masks). And then you can get some toys to start. Kyle: There’s a starting part and that way is closer except during the coronavirus season. Some people will ask you some questions before you have to go up the line.
Do you have a map when we visit? Cal: We use the phone map. I like the paper map.
What is the first animal you see when you enter Zoo Atlanta? Rhys, Cal and Kyle: A flamingo. Karter: The first animal I see when we go is a toy elephant on a bubble stick.
Are there any new animals this time? Cal: The rhinos are coming! Karter: Yeah, the rhinos! I never saw a real rhino. Kyle: That’s what I was going to say too. Mumbles.
Who is sleeping when we go? Rhys, Karter and Kyle: LIONS! Kyle: They are almost always sleeping when we go, except one time. Cal: Warthog.

Who is the most active? Rhys: The other monkeys were climbing. Kyle: Flamingos. They were really active when people fed them.
Did you talk to any of the animals? What did they say? Cal: No (Parents: that’s not how I remember it, but okay.) Kyle: I talked to Mumbles. I mumbled to see if he could hear me.
What’s your favorite animal at Zoo Atlanta? Rhys: My other favorite was the lions. Cal: My favorite animal was a warthog. Karter: The lions, but if they had a black panther, that would have been my favorite. Kyle: I have more than one favorite. I like the lions, tigers and the flamingo because of the colors of them. Parents: Lions, tigers, bears … oh my! (We can’t help it.)
What’s different about this visit to the Zoo? Cal: We wore our masks. Kyle: We got to see Mumbles and we went inside the slippery slimy place.
What’s the same, but really cool to see again? Cal: The zebras. And the panda.

Karter: For the coronavirus, we get a picture of a map so we don’t get lost. Kyle: Yes, in the coronavirus season, you have to scan for a map. When there is no coronavirus, someone will give you a paper map. Parents: There is now a one-way journey that includes most experiences and habitats. Knowledgeable Zoo Atlanta team members are positioned along the route to encourage social distancing and answer questions. Many of the animal habitats have markers on the ground to suggest where we can stand. There are also hand sanitizing stations along the path.

Rhys: The ostrich. Karter: All the animals were the same. Kyle: But the pandas were really close this time. Parents: The Panda Care Team wears masks and takes social distancing very seriously. They maintain six feet between themselves. Our kids recognize that COVID-19 has changed the way we do things, so seeing how the animal care professionals continue with safety precautions around the animals reinforces the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of ourselves and others.

Black History and Heritage Neighborhood Guide Take A Walk Down Auburn Avenue Auburn Avenue, located in the neighborhood fondly called Sweet Auburn, is famous for its place as the heart of black enterprise and the American civil rights movement. In 1956, Fortune Magazine called it “the richest Negro street in the world.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on the street and he preached on the street. Coretta Scott King established The King Center on the street. The MLK Jr. Day Parade is celebrated on the street. Both Dr. King and Coretta Scott King are interred on Auburn Avenue. Start at the APEX Museum, which gives a view of history from an African-American perspective. There is a focus on the origins and introduction of the slave trade. There are several churches on Auburn Avenue that have a place in history, with the most important being Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King, his father and grandfather preached. Dr. King was baptized there and his funeral was held at this historic church. It’s hard to miss the Big Bethel AME Church; just look up and see the “Jesus Saves” sign on the steeple. Big Bethel was founded in 1840 by enslaved members of the white Union Church. It housed the city’s first public school for African-Americans,

The Wheat Street Baptist Church is another church with a rich civil rights history. The church’s pastor, William Holmes Borders, was a prominent civil rights activist who worked to desegregate the city’s public transportation system in 1957 and influenced a young Dr. King. His daughter, Lisa Borders, was president of the Atlanta City Council between 2004 and 2010. Part of the movie “Selma” was filmed in the church. 359 Auburn Ave. NE

As you continue down the street, you’ll see the signs of businesses, many long gone, that played a vital role in the civil rights movement. Look for the Atlanta Daily World sign. The first black daily newspaper published news that blacks couldn’t get anywhere else at this site from 1928 to 2008. Among the issues the paper regularly covered were lynchings, police brutality, school segregation and racial discrimination in the military.
SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was founded in the Ebenezer Baptist Church and moved to offices in the Prince Hall Masonic Temple, where many of the movement’s activities were planned, including the March on Washington, the Selma Voting Rights
Campaign and the March to Montgomery as well as efforts to desegregate cities such as Albany, Birmingham and St. Augustine. 320 Auburn Ave. NE

Many notables served as SCLC president, including Dr. King, Ralph David Abernathy and Joseph Lowery. The Prince Hall Masonic Temple has a history in civil rights that predates the movement. The building was built in 1937 by John Wesley Dobbs and served as the home of WERD, the nation’s first African-American radio station. In 1936 Dobbs, dubbed the “Mayor of Sweet Auburn,” organized black voter registration drives and formed the Atlanta Negro Voters League. 330 Auburn Ave. NE There is so much more to Sweet Auburn. HOSPITALITY RESOURCES Atlanta Braves announced a $1 million relief fund for game-day workers and certain other affected members of the baseball community to help them in this time of need. The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation plans to grant $5 million to the Greater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund established by United Way of Greater Atlanta and Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. Atlanta United announced its ‘United We Conquer’ initiative to give back to the community, acknowledge and support those on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis and offer resources for fans and community members who would like to learn about safe volunteering opportunities. Included in the initiative, the Atlanta United Foundation will grant longtime partner Soccer in the Streets $85,000 to assist with the nonprofit’s operational and coaching expenses during this time.

Here’s how the city’s top convention and trade centers, as well as the restaurant scene, are safely reopening in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. BY WENDY BOWMAN
GEORGIA WORLD CONGRESS CENTER Although the city’s number one convention, sports and entertainment destination didn’t host any shows during the coronavirus shutdown, the venue never really closed. Not only was Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) tapped by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to serve as an alternate care facility for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, but staff also continued to work on initiatives like partnering with Westside Community Market to distribute fresh produce to local residents. GWCC has enacted a comprehensive “Business ReturnPlan” (available at www.gwcca.org) that features 11 support functions ranging from crowd density protocols, enhanced cleaning, touchless services and team member training. GWCC recently announced that it is the first convention center in the U.S. to achieve GBAC STAR facility accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC), a Division of ISSA, the leading trade association for the cleaning industry. During our closure, we worked with our current clients to reimagine their events to meet our guidelines and produce a safe gathering for their attendees. We have assisted them with creating socially distanced floor plans, outlined new food and beverage guidelines, and educated them on our very detailed ‘Together Safely’ program to prepare them to host events that will help them get back to business.” Access to the facility is governed by IMC’s “Together Safely” master plan (www.togethersafely.com), which details procedures for facilities, staff, customers and third-party vendors. Among the required protocols: contactless registration; temperature monitoring; and the use of personal protective equipment. “As we prepare to reopen our campuses and our markets, the health and well-being of our customers and staff are the top priority for IMC,” says Maricich.

GEORGIA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION “We are delighted to see the restaurants here in Georgia open back up,” says Karen Bremer, CEO of the Georgia Restaurant Association (GRA), which represents the industry in the areas of advocacy, education and awareness. “Our guests are grateful to have their favorite neighborhood restaurants open again, and there is an increased demand as many people want to get back out.” The state’s restaurants began closing in different municipalities as early as March 17, and a stay-in-place order was declared by Gov. Kemp April 2. The order was lifted April 27, with dining room capacity limitations, and dine-in service allowed as long as a set of 39 state-mandated guidelines were met. In addition, the GRA joined with nationally recognized food safety experts — including the Georgia Department of Public Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and CDC — to develop reopening guidelines. The association created a one-stop COVID-19 website (www.garestaurants.org/ news/covid19) offering information on how to reopen safely, as well as to ensure the wellbeing of workers and guests. “Food safety and sanitation are paramount,” says Bremer. “Guests want to trust the restaurant and feel safe, so we ask that our restaurants monitor our website for the latest information regarding COVID-19. We hope everyone will respond in a positive manner.” The GRA also partnered with Atlantabased digital-learning company mLevel to offer THRIVE Georgia. This training program allows businesses with up to 500 employees in the Georgia restaurant sector to educate their employees virtually on the latest state regulations to ensure they are compliant and safe.
