Friends of Arundel Castle Cricket Club Spring Newsletter 2013 from the Chairman

Dear All It is mid January as I start to write my appraisal for the coming season. I am sitting in a hotel in Solden, Austria watching snow falling and thinking of summer and what might be in store for Arundel Cricket this year. All I am really praying for is some sun and a great deal less rain and then things should start to fall into place and our unique and beautiful venue will be able to return to hosting and entertaining the visiting teams and The Friends, with a lot less frustration for everybody. Retirement has opened the door for the Wadey family to explore and experience different pastimes and this year it is skiing with Georgie and Pippa, our oldest daughter, and ten other friends. Sadly after my new knee and hip replacements my surgeon said I would be ...... foolish to try to learn to ski. So unfair (but of course a reality), however I have found that après skiing is proving to be very enjoyable instead!! This is so very different to our travels in New Zealand this time last year with Sacha, our youngest daughter, and after two years out there she is now moving on to Australia. Guess what - I see another adventure looming! This year's festive season brought great sadness for cricket lovers, Sussex folk, personal families and myself with the loss of Tony Greig and Christopher MartinJenkins, both legends in their own right. Tony, my captain at Sussex, is the man to whom all cricket professionals, administrators, commercial sponsors, media corporations (throughout the world) and the public owe a huge debt of gratitude. Whether or not you agreed with what he did all those years ago, he was responsible for projecting the game into a viable, new and exciting spectacle for everybody and I for one take my hat off to him for his courage and determination. I sat opposite him at dinner after the Cowdrey Lecture at Lords in late June, where he was very much his old self with just as much charisma and forward looking beliefs and I am so sad for everyone at his sudden passing. As for CMJ what more can be said about this kind and level headed "Gentle Man" that has not already been said or written. He was a one off, who saw only good in everyone and felt the game of cricket could heal nearly all dilemmas and with HIS skills with the pen, and HIS passion he might well have been right! He suffered physically, too much for such a lovely man, as he indicated in his last article, about Tony Grieg, and I just hope that he is now at peace and his family will soon be able to remember him as he was and use the tributes from friends and colleagues to regain their strength. We will all miss him. On a more domestic level, the new drainage on the square is really being tested this winter and oh how pleased I am that we did push on and do this work in the autumn. The whole playing area is so wet and with the water table being almost at ground level, our groundsmen at the moment just cannot get out there to start preparing anything. We do however know that we are getting a terrific quantity of water to drain off the ground as we can see it pouring out of the new drain on the far bank. Fingers crossed that nature will know what our country needs in the way of rain in the months to come and let things start to improve for all of us.

The Christmas Lunch was, yet again, a great success at the end of last year, with a hundred and sixty five people enjoying quite wonderful food prepared by Fran Smith and her team from Food for Thought. Mike Griffith then entertained us in his role as President of MCC, and told us of what was being prepared and achieved at Lord's to improve and maintain the status of the world’s most famous ground. He has a hectic season in front of him with a representative visit to New Zealand in mid February, then the rematch with The Black Caps here in May, followed by the Ashes series for the rest of the season and we wish him well with all his duties and pending ideas. To cap off this happy day Susan-Ann Dowle recorded a splendid result on the raffle she runs for the Club funds and we cannot thank her enough for her hard work and help at all our events each year. By the time you receive this letter The Friends will be Incorporated and have the word "Limited" added after its existing name. This has been a long and involved process as well as quite hard work and we must thank John Stapleton of Thomas Eggar for all his unstinting help. The Friends should now be happy that matters are in a logical, formal but straightforward format to ensure that everything is in order for the future, yet with none of the existing ethos being changed. I feel confident that Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk would have been happy with the outcome of her ideas for The Friends and I know that The Duke himself is extremely pleased with the evolution. As a last action, the old committee unanimously voted to invite Lady Mary Mumford and Lady Sarah Clutton to be Vice Presidents to express our thanks for all their support over the past years, along with recording and maintaining the ‘Old Family’ connections for the future. PLEASE remember that if any of you feel you would like to be more involved with the running and mechanics of The Friends then do make contact with me and I shall be more than delighted to talk and discuss matters through. By the time you read this, the new Friends’ Rule Book will be available on our website and I would urge you all to read it - hard copies will be available from the office or you can send us an SAE. It is at this point that I feel I should also tell you about this year’s financial position. Our office staff have worked very hard to put together the ‘year end’ accounts so any problems resulting from 2012’s terrible weather, sixteen days of cancelled matches, reduced commission and less donations from former benefactors could be identified as soon as possible. We also had to consider our expenditure, which we knew had risen as a result of the weather and meant a number of extra repairs and renewals, together with the one off costs of the Incorporation. What I can tell you is that The Friends and staff have done sterling work this year, enabling us to keep a result that will show only a very small deficit. Well done to all and so much better than had been feared.

As you all know both The Friends and The Foundation are concerned with the decline in numbers and the age factor of The Friends and so jointly we have set up a small working group to consider and make suggestions of how we can improve the situation. We have invited some outside helpers (who are genuine friends of the club) to discuss ideas, and consider a new approach on how to improve our number of Friends. It is hoped to have some proposals and structures in place over the next few months. We must ensure that future income from almost any source is considered to make sure that we have healthy 'end of year' balance sheets. However with the existing economic situation we will have to be diligent but always remember our Arundel standards. This now brings me to the coming season's fixtures and I trust you will be pleased with the results when you read through the enclosed 2013 Fixture Card, what follows is a brief summary of who will be visiting Arundel. Cambridge University starts our season on Sunday 5 May, with Oxford following on during the next week. The Arabs come at the end of the month and I hope we can have sunny days this year for all these matches, as the last two years were badly weather affected. Combined Services start off the month of June and then we have the Sussex County Festival Week from 12th to 16th June, firstly against Surrey, followed by Northamptonshire in a one day match. Then it is the Duke’s personal game versus IZ on 23rd June. We have some high profile Australian Touring sides in July, the Crusaders (Swan Richards’ very strong side) and Sydney Cricket Club. These contests will be in their own little way personal 'Ashes' affairs and will give the flavour of what is going to take place with our International side. Arundel Town is once more back as is the MCC during July. On the 5th July we will again host the National Schools Twenty/20 finals, organised by Andy Whittall, and also on 12th of this month we will have the ECB 2nd XI County T/20 Finals, where Alan Fordham from ECB will be overseeing the event as last year. If the ECB final is anything like the previous year’s three match extravaganza then we will all be in for a wonderful day’s cricket, so please try to come along, bring friends and join the England Scouts (who attend this event) and be entertained. August brings us the MCC Young Cricketers, with all their high quality, up and coming, possible next Generation County prodigies, all ably overseen and drilled by Mark Alleyne. The Sussex County 2nd XI then have their one day match on 5th August against Surrey and this is immediately followed by

their three day fixture also against Surrey and we are delighted to be hosting these games again this year. Lady Mary's XI against the Martlets is on the following Sunday and the Woozlers will be with us on the 18th of the month. Then the month is finished off with the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival on the 25th. The season ends during the first part of September with the ECB/ESCA U-15 T/20 Finals and I know the three matches will be very exciting, if the last two years is anything to go by. In my opinion this type of fixture is what both the Friends and Foundation should be all about..... promoting good youth cricket. To add to all of this we have the Harlequins against the Quidnuncs in May, along with the Private Eye corporate day, where Ian Hislop will be showing us his all round skills. Sir Tim Rice's Heartaches return at the beginning of September for their usual fun day. We also have some other possible matches pending but not finalised, as we go to press. The Sussex Martlets have another strong fixture list, which is much more evenly spread through this year. It includes MCC in May, Brighton College and Brighton Brunswick in June, Eastbourne College and a very special match against Singapore Cricket Club in July, along with the Yellowhammers fixture. The Junior v Senior Martlets contest is in mid August and finishes off their visits to Arundel. The Foundation is now staging more traditional cricket matches, over and above their recognised ‘special needs’ events at Arundel. This year the Foundation’s main fund raising event will be in the form of an 'Eight a Side' contest of corporate teams that will include high profile players and be held at our own wonderful ground. There will also be up to two hundred paying guests in a marquee for lunch and tea. All this is going to take place on Wednesday 3rd July and all Friends will have a chance to purchase tickets. The Foundation will also be putting out a side against the Leopards from South Africa at the beginning of July. August sees the Lord's Taverners’ two day competition being staged and this will be followed by another remarkable and important match against the Afghans, a repeat of last year which proved to be a huge success. This bring me to a conclusion, save to wish all the staff at Arundel an enjoyable and smooth running season, along with some fine cricketing days and I give my thanks to all of them for everything they do to make the summer such a wonderful time for us. To YOU all I say, "please come and see us" and enjoy a day at Arundel. Here’s to a great season, kind regards and good wishes
