Art & Techniques of

Decorative Painting Michel Nadaï

Editions Vial Michel Nadaï, is an award-winning decorative painter who devotes his time between teaching the trade to an international set of students and working on commissioned projects, in France and abroad. He is a Master Artisan, and earned the title of Best Craftsman of France in 1994. He invites us to reflect upon the creative possibilities of this art. Part one of this volume goes over the basics of decorative painting; using a unique approach, it introduces us to the profession and helps us become familiar with its demands. The second section consists of techniques of painted imitations. The techniques presented reflect both, a well established tradition and the constant wish to achieve even more realistic effects. The selected examples - twenty-five in total - consist of detailed step-by-step instructions, and are accompanied by photographs depicting the different stages of the work. The last part of this volume takes us from trompe-l’œil to murals. Here again, the author provides us with clear, comprehensive and easy-to-follow instructions that are backed up by plenty of illustrations and photos. Contents : • The basics: documentation, the tools, paint, glazes, protecting the painted works, health and safety precautions. • Painted imitations : painted imitation marble, wood graining, semi-precious stones and organic materials. • Trompe-l’œil: highlights and shadows, stripes and moldings, decorative panels painted in trompe-l’œil.
