KASBAH TAMADOT

NIGHTLIFE

Although there are many bars and clubs all over town, we recommend three, which in our opinion are more in line with how we do things in London: Pacha, Theatro and the recently opened La Suite at the Meridien. These are without doubt the best of the destination clubs. Expect to see familiar faces from the usual hangouts in Paris, London, St. Tropez and Ibiza, along with the customary vodka-swilling, champagne-spraying shenanigans that go on (thankfully the latter is still not a common occurrence here!)

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN; KASBAH TAMADOT Our stay at the uber-cool, Kasbah Tamadot was one of the most memorable to date. This is Sir Richard Branson’s Moroccan retreat, opened nearly three years ago following an extensive renovation period. Located on the outskirts of Asni in the Atlas Mountains, it’s less than one hours drive from Marrakech. Tamadot is a spectacular property. From the moment you drive through the gates you enter another realm, offering you a sense of total peace and serenity, where luxury and opulence come as standard. Add to that the sheer beauty and majesty of the High Atlas, with its truly breathtaking views, and you really feel you’ve arrived. Tamadot belonged to an Italian antiques collector and interior designer before Branson bought it back in 1998, during one of his famous ballooning expeditions. Along with the sale came a collection of antiques and artifacts the previous owner assembled during his extensive travels throughout India and the Far East, which has since been put to good use in furnishing the property in magnificent style. In terms of facilities, the property has five junior and five deluxe suites, including one deluxe suite with its own plunge pool. In addition there are six superior rooms and a three bedroom studio, which can be booked exclusively for those in need of total privacy.

There are two pools (indoor and outdoor infinity), a gym, two tennis courts and a Hammam, offering traditional Moroccan treatments. Kanoun, the main restaurant offers a selection of local and international cuisine, run by Jean Mundell-Murphy, a Raymond Blanc prodigy who honed his skills at Le Manoir aux Quat’ saisons. Dinner by starlight on the roof terrace is highly recommended, particularly if you are with a loved one and are looking to impress! www.virginlimtededition.com THE PALMERAIE GOLF PALACE: First opened just over ten years ago, the Palmeraie Golf Palace has been undergoing a major refurbishment programme. As well as upgrading the existing facilities, the group has expanded its portfolio with some new additions: Le Palmeraie Village (luxury apartments), Les Jardins d’Ines (boutique hotel) and Le Pavillon du Golf (44 all-suite hotel where we stayed). The award winning Robert Trent Jones Sr. eighteen-hole golf course is also adding another nine holes, which should be opening as we go to press. With plenty of amenities to keep one occupied, there is a great deal of choice when it comes to leisure, entertainment and relaxation, including numerous signature restaurants and probably the best Japanese in Marrakech, which we mentioned earlier.
