Deputy Undersecretary of Education Visits ASU-Newport
Joining United States Department of Education Deputy Undersecretary Kim Hunter-Reed on her tour of the postsecondary correctional education program operated by Arkansas State University-Newport at the McPherson Correctional Facility in Newport were ASUN Director of Public Information and Mass Communications Van Provence, ASUN Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Ashley Buchman, ASUN Chancellor Dr. Sandra Massey, Jaye Espy of the USDE, Dr. Hunter-Reed, Deputy Undersecretary Hunter-Reed, ASUN Dean of Institutional Effectiveness & Academic Outreach Dr. Allen Mooneyhan, ASUN Assistant Professor of Speech and long-time faculty at the correctional facility, Bruce Smock, Elyse Jones of the USDE, and ASU System Vice President for University Relations Shane Broadway. Arkansas State University-Newport announced in July that the institution was one of 67 colleges and universities across the country selected to participate in the Second Chance Pell Grant pilot program. The experimental program is designed to test whether participation in high-quality education programs increases after
expanding access to financial aid for incarcerated individuals. The pilot program will allow eligible incarcerated Americans to receive Pell Grants and pursue postsecondary education with the goal of helping them get jobs and support their families upon release. As a follow up to that announcement, and as a part of
the Back to School Bus Tour through the South, Deputy Undersecretary of Education, Dr. Kim Hunter-Reed visited and toured the postsecondary correctional education program operated by Arkansas State University-Newport at the McPherson Correctional Facility in Newport. Deputy Under Secretary
Reed, along with ASU-Newport and ASU System officials, toured the facility, met with students and faculty, and hosted an informal discussion with students about their educational experiences, receiving feedback and stories about how Second Chance Pell will impact their educational and life trajectories.

The Farm Bureau Women’s Committee held a rice tasting event Sept. 6 in the Larry N. Williams Student/Community Center on the Newport campus. Various rice dishes were provided for tasting by ASUN students and staff.
ASUN alumni Wilson Cole lectured on the Newport and Jonesboro campuses Sept. 20 & 21 about his time serving in Cambodia in the Peace Corps.
ASU-Newport observed Constitution Day with a mock Presidential Election on all three campus locations.
ASUN HVLT Hosts Southern Electric Corp.
Linemen from Southern Electric Corp. of Flowood, Miss., spent Sept. 29 on the Newport campus, training and working with ASUN’s current High Voltage Lineman Technology class. The groups enjoyed training on safety procedures and other activities. Southern Electric Corp. has employed many of our linemen over the years and ASUN enjoyed having them on our campus. Of the 20-plus workers from SEC that attended the training, eight were ASUN program graduates—including two of their foremen.
ASUN Alums Timmy Stevens, Blaike Jones, Korey Harlson, Logan Trusty, Mickey Vanhorn, Justin McGowan, Clay Herren and Craig Sellers, all now employed by Southern Electric, spent the day training on the ASUN campus Sept. 29. They are joined by their former instructors, Clay Fulton and Kenny Browning.
ASUN Holds Annual Scholarship Luncheon More than 160 scholarship recipients and donors were on hand Sept. 28 when ASU-Newport celebrated student success and donor support with the college’s annual Scholarship Luncheon. The luncheon was hosted by the Division of Student Affairs, under the direction of Dr. Ashley Buchman, Vice Chancellor
for Student Affairs and was coordinated by Candace Gross, ASUN Dean of Enrollment Services. The luncheon was held in the Merchants & Planters Bank room of the Larry N. Williams Student/Community Center, and connected scholarship-receiving students from all three campus locations with the donors who provide them.
Scholarship donors and recipients were seated together with ASUN staff and faculty members, providing donors an opportunity to interact with students who benefit from their generosity. Those in attendance enjoyed remarks from student scholarship recipients Jamaal Rainey, Tatum Roberson, Ramiro Macias and Samuel
Wakefield, as well as greetings from Dr. Buchman and ASUN Chancellor Dr. Sandra Massey. The invocation was given by Rev. Thompson Murray of Newport First United Methodist Church. See the following pages for photos of all scholarship donors and recipients in attendance at the luncheon.
