Review

Arkansas State University - Newport

Volume 3, No. 8

August Brims With Activity as Classes Resume August is a month that brings newness and excitement to any college campus, and ASU-Newport is no exception. When July melts away from the summertime heat and August begins, everyone on campus can feel the pace of the workday pick up as we finalize preparations for the new school year. When August slips into September, the change of months is hardly noticed - the hectic days of preparation are almost a blur because classes are in full swing and students, faculty and staff have settled into their school-year routines. The month of August is packed with activity as New Student Orientation wraps up, students finalize schedules and return to campus and Welcome Week activities help introduce new faces and reacquaint familiar ones. The week before students returned this year was filled with activity for faculty and staff. Convocation Week brought everyone together for meetings and final planning. Staff and faculty heard welcome addresses from our Chancellor, Dr. Sandra Massey, our System President, Dr. Charles Welch and special remarks from Dr. Walter Bumphus, President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges. The return of our students meant that Welcome Week activities were in full swing - food, fun and games accompanied the beginning of classes. As classes began in August,

ASU-Newport also welcomed over 60 students from four local high schools to our campus as we opened our new IGNITE (Investing in Gen Next Industrial and Technical Education) Academy in Newport. The pilot program will allow students from Newport Special School District, Jackson County School District, Cedar Ridge School District and Bradford School District to receive training in Computer Network Technology, Welding, Diesel Technology or Phlebotomy/ Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon graduation from high school, students completing

the program will have earned transferable credits and certificates of proficiency or technical certificates in the four fields of study. The IGNITE Academy will have a great impact on the workforce in our area, as these high school students will graduate with skills and credentials that will make them valuable employees who are workforce ready in their chosen fields. With the return of students, ASU-Newport introduced food service options on our Jonesboro and Marked Tree campuses for the first time. A full-service dining facility, similar to

The Hub in Newport, serving both hot meals and grill items, opened on the Marked Tree campus. Food trucks became a presence on the Jonesboro campus, giving students and staff at both locations the ability to grab a quick lunch without the need to leave campus. Both of these new improvements are a testament to ASUN’s goal of serving our students in the best ways possible. These are just some of the many activities that took place at ASUN during the month of August. Please enjoy our look back on the month in this issue of our Month-N-Review!

Our new Ambassadors are just some of the many students ASUN welcomed to campus in August. Ambassadors are (sitting, from left): Sarah Howard (Liberal Arts) of Newport, Sara Baker (Liberal Arts) of Newport, Courtney Jackson (General Studies) of Tuckerman and Tatum Roberson (Liberal Arts) of Tuckerman. (standing, from left): Felix Caballero (Liberal Arts) of Newport, Garrett Oliver (Liberal Arts) of Tuckerman, Kylan Young (Liberal Arts) of Tuckerman and Tristan Vance (Liberal Arts) of Newport. The ASUN Ambassadors serve as representatives of the student body by serving as the student leaders on the ASUN campus. These students are charged with serving as greeters at ASUN and community events, assisting with planning and coordinating on-campus events and presenting themselves as leaders inside and outside of the classroom.

With 17 students enrolled in our Diesel Technology program for the Fall 2016 semester, ASU-Newport is boasting one of the largest classes in the history of the program. Our Diesel Technology students land great jobs with competitive salaries upon graduation. Thanks to our generous partners like Truck Centers of Arkansas, who provided the truck used in training and in our class photo, our students are able to train on the best, most modern equipment available.
