BOARD PERSPECTIVES

ASP 2021 Global Conference – Setting the Standard * By Denise McNerney, ASP Board President ASP’s 2021 Global Conference is the embodiment of our newly updated Vision and Mission, bringing our commitment to being the standard-bearer for strategy management to vibrant life. The theme, “Mastering the Strategy Life Cycle”, aligns with our updated Body of Knowledge being launched this year. With the international lineup of presenters and the addition of at least three Regional Conference Events, the 2021 Conference advances our commitment to being a truly global association. As I hope you have already seen, the conference agenda reflects leading-edge thinking, tools, and techniques, all based on foundational practices that have been proven to be critical to the strategy life cycle. I appreciate board member Fiona Carter’s perspective below on how ASP is bringing outstanding professional development opportunities to leaders and strategy professionals for maximizing the strategy management life cycle to advance their overall organizational success.

Mastering the Strategy Life Cycle - ASP 2021 Global Conference – Setting the Standard Fiona Carter, ASP Board of Directors, 2021 Global Conference Co-Chair Professional development and thought leadership are keystones of the ASP mantra, and we take them both very seriously. This year in particular, where the pandemic has taken over, in many aspects, our day-to-day lives, the role of strategy and strategic thinking is very important to companies who want to not only survive but also to thrive. We at ASP are taking this a step further, looking holistically at how each part of the strategy life cycle is being hit in today’s world of uncertainty; taking stock not only of the uncertainty in the present but also the impact it will have on the future of business and modes of working. As you have no doubt seen, ASP is producing an excellent content-driven, technology savvy, interactive platform for you to explore these areas and more through our ASP 2021 Global Conference, the theme of which is ‘Mastering the Strategy Life Cycle”. The live conference starts with a day of deep-dive Masterclasses on 19th May 2021 with expert speakers interacting with you on areas such as high-performance virtual facilitation, strategic agility in times of uncertainty, and how to adapt and align balanced scorecards. The body of the conference will take place on 20th and 21st May, giving you 16 breakout sessions to choose from. These sessions will cover different aspects of the five activities of the strategy life cycle: strategy formulation, strategy transformation, strategy execution, strategy engagement, and strategy governance. Plus, there will be two-panel sessions with expert panelists discussing Strategy & Technology in Transformative Times and Strategy Execution. Not only that but there will be opportunities to network with your peers across the world – from South America to Europe to Australia. Our Opening Reception on 19th May will include chances to meet fellow attendees, speakers and sponsors, as well games to participate in and enjoy – nothing like a virtual ice-breaker to get you in the mood! This year for the first time, ASP is adding Regional Conference Events hosted by our chapters/partners in Australia, Uganda, and the United Kingdom. The events, taking place in the weeks leading up to the conference, provide opportunities for attendees to hear regional experts explore strategy management through a more local lens. The addition of these regional events further cements ASP’s ongoing commitment to supporting strategists around the globe. Look forward to seeing you there: 2021 Conference Agenda - Association for Strategic Planning (strategyassociation.org) * Thank s to Lynne Brown – 2021 Global Conference Co-Chair - for her editorial contributions to this article.

ASP Government Community of Practice Update On February 11, Dr. Woody Stanley and Joe Coberly hosted our first Public Sector Research Discussion Group session. Woody facilitated a discussion of the paper: Does Strategic Planning Improve Organizational Performance – A MetaAnalysis. The session was well attended and well-received, and we plan to hold the next such event in June. The Government CoP hopes that these discussions will help bridge the gap between academic research and strategic planning practices. In addition, Woody published a paper titled “Implementation of the Federal Performance Framework under Presidents Obama and Trump: A Comparative Analysis of Agency Strategic Plans,” in Public Performance & Management Review. You can find a link in the Government CoP blog. Check it out!

STRATEGIC STOCKMAL Societal Shifts and the Future of Work Recently, the National Capital Area Chapter of ASP collaborated with ASP’s Government Community of Practice to host a highly interactive webinar to discuss major societal change and the potential impacts on the future of work featuring leading "futurists" from Toffler Associates. It has been fifty years since Alvin Toffler and his wife, Adelaide Farrell, published Future Shock, and Toffler and Associates are still researching what the future may be. As “futures” professionals, they don’t focus on prediction, rather they help their clients understand potential futures out ten or twenty years and then help them identify capabilities needed now to prepare https://www.strategyassociation.org/admin/email/view.aspx?jobId=4455331

for these potential futures. They incorporate this approach in their strategic planning engagements. From my perspective, it is an alternative approach to scenario planning and forecasting that is becoming more and more prevalent in strategic planning. Eight societal drivers of change were discussed based on Toffler’s latest research: Infrastructure Adaptation Power Shifts Societal Collisions and Coalitions Bio-digital Convergence Security Trust Resource Scarcity Disaggregation of Location and Activity Click here to read more.

ARTICLES FROM MEMBERS OKRs vs. KPIs Sponsored Content By Doug Maris LBL Strategies As strategy management trainers and consultants, we frequently hear the question: “What is the difference between KPIs and OKRs?” Or, just as frequently, “Which is better: KPIs or OKRs?” As we learned in Strategy Consulting 101, our response is often “It depends!” Which is “better” between OKRs and KPIs depends on your organizational complexities, overall strategy cadence, and performance culture. In many situations, both OKRs and KPIs may live happily together, and complement each other, within a strategic management performance system. We find great value in considering the utilization of both OKRs and KPIs within your organization’s strategy framework. Click here to read more

What a World of Difference a Little Foresight Could Make: International Development Agencies are Exploring the Future Sponsored Content By Bart Édes (On behalf of LBL Strategies) The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic upended the plans and strategies of development organizations globally. But the destabilizing health and economic crisis is but one of many significant events and trends that are remaking the context for development cooperation. Indeed, there are several economic, environmental, social, and technological disruptions transforming the world. The pandemic has accelerated the pace of change, as highlighted by the rapid take up of digital technologies and new ways of working and interfacing with clients and partners over the past 12 months. As international development organizations regroup and reorient themselves for what will transpire after COVID-19 has been brought under control, they need to prepare to function in a world characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (“VUCA”). In this new normal of constant and unpredictable change, they can empower themselves by embracing Strategic Foresight (or simply, Foresight). Click here to read more
