Glads’ trigeneration Games affair

Like mother, like daughter certainly rings true for Glad Gullock who turns 86 today.

Along the way her daughters, extended family and now her granddaughter have joined the Games family.

basketball, golf, hockey, netball, swimming, cricket and big bore shooting.

Glad competed in the first Alice Springs Masters Games in 1986 and has only missed one since.

There have been 11 family members involved in a variety of sports including lawn bowls, athletics, tennis, squash,

With Glad at the Games this year are daughters Joy Feltham and Vicki Waldron, granddaughter Michelle Feltham and son-in-law Colin Feltham. The Games legacy all began when Glad, from Ballarat, came to visit her daughter Loris who was working in Alice Springs. “Loris said why not stay a little bit longer as the inaugural Games were about to be on - so I did,” Glad said. “The Games are tremendous. We all love it, that’s why we keep coming back. “We have brought a couple of ‘Games virgins’ this year - my granddaughter and a couple of friends.”

Glad has already won gold at these games which she’ll add to her haul of medals won in lawn bowls and athletics over the years.

Athletics is a recent addition to Glad’s program - after her daughters entered her because of her habit of running around all over the place. “At the bowling club they growled at me for running up and down the greens,” Glad said. “I still do it.” Glad has always loved sports and in her prime won a couple of Australian Indoor Bowling triples championships, was named her club champion 10 times and just about everything else that was going around.

Happy Birthday

SPORTS HOROSCOPE

It is not recommended you plan short trips on the morning of October 14, 2014 – they can be fraught with negative emotions. You may also receive some bad news. The rest of the day will prove quite favourable. This is a good moment for your personal endeavours.

Glad Gullock Alan Robinson Bryan Atterton Sydney Lee Maurice Green Ripeka Dargaville Darryl Selleck Lauren Hill Sharon Hayes Alison Kain Leanne O’Connor Davy Maddick-Semal

ARIES Today much depends on the nature of Aries’ activity. The more unusual and creative your project is, the more nervewrecking and turbulent the situation around you will be. This day is good for having innovational, demonstrational, marketing and exhibition events finalised.

TAURUS Today Taurus will finally see the results of recent events in the home, family and business. It is quite possible that your innate stubbornness will make you try one more time to turn the situation in your favour. Be reasonable; don’t fall victim to ardour.

GEMINI Gemini’s success depends on your activity level and fast response. Don’t waste any time. Make use of all communication and transportation means at your disposal. If your cab is late or your own car is broken, forget the comfort and travel by hitch hiking.

CANCER Today is not the day that will be calm and predictable. Cancer may experience extreme levels of tension in financial, creative or business fields. Friendly and amorous relations may be quite stressful as well. The time to talk has come and gone; now is the time to act in order to achieve success.

LEO Leo will have to make a final push to bring projects home. Irritability, nervousness and aggression may be following you up until the night. Exercise self-control; otherwise you may compromise your marriage, friendship or business alliance.

VIRGO This day can be used for acting behind the scenes. This is a good time to organise a surprise or finalise a creative project. It is quite possible that some of your interests or passions are just about to exhaust themselves or you may be ready to graduate to another level of your favourite game.

LIBRA The day is good for active Librans who have a creative spirit within and enjoy innovations and collectivism. People like that will be able to make the best of today. This is a wonderful time to showcase your personal talents and charisma.

SCORPIO Pull yourself together. You’ll need to if you are an ambitious Scorpion who wants to climb another step along the career ladder. Don’t expect an easy success. Your triumph will cost you. The price may be peace within your home. Be sure to avoid inertia and getting stuck in endless analysis and criticism.

SAGITTARIUS Sagittarians will benefit from an active lifestyle. If you are a typical Archer, this will be good news for you. This is a good time to have your projects finalised or moved to a new level. This advice is especially relevant if you are in charge of an educational, creative or marketing project.

CAPRICORN This is your day if you are a rare representative of an adventurous Capricorn. If you are neither innovator nor gambler, maintain your status of an observer. You may witness someone else’s triumph or failure and learn from their experience.

AQUARIUS All day long the likelihood of a conflict remains high. If your competitor is not willing to negotiate peacefully, you will have to accept the challenge. This day will be quite stressful for businessmen, artists, athletes, lawyers as well as those who are constantly in the public eye.

PISCES The tense atmosphere of today may not affect Pisceans if they know how to leave others to deal with their own problems. You may witness a scandal: for example, in the net, among your friends or colleagues. If you are engaged in some secret or illegal activities, you may face real problems today.

Top notch dart throwers show their stuff Seventeen darts teams converged on the Alice Springs Golf Club on Saturday with some of the top players in the Northern Territory.

was Neil “Fossil” Trantham, nicknamed Fossil as he is the oldest member among the competitors targeting bullseyes.

Players of the ilk of Chippy Miller, fresh from taking out the Broken Hill 50th Inland Darts Championships recently, and Jason Dunemann from Tennant Creek, were competing.

Fossil won the opening mixed drawn doubles event with his partner Phillip Reeves. He doesn’t compare one Games to the next.

Joining them was Kojac Lanacau, the man with the infamous mohawk playing in his eighth Alice Springs Masters Games.

“They’re all pretty much on par and it’s a week of good fun,” he said.

“We’ll finish somewhere in the top eight,” he said confidently.

He said one of the reasons for competing at the Games is the friendships the event produces.

Michael Smith was another participant. He started his darts career as a child before taking to the more active sport of basketball for a “20-year break from darts”.

“Darts makes it enjoyable and we catch up every two years as well as go interstate to catch up with a lot of people.”

Playing in every Alice Springs Masters Games since its inception

Fossil and his mates have a busy week of competition still ahead with the last day on Friday.

Something for everyone at Lasseters Lasseters’ Centre of Entertainment is the place to be during the Alice Springs Master Games.

All athletes are more than welcome to attend any of the activities in their sporting uniform. Lasseters has live entertainment all week and is open until late with a DJ at the Juicy Rump.

Today is Tight Rump Tuesday with selected steaks at 50 per cent off the normal price. There’s also a selection of breads and desserts for $5. Tali, the current AHA Northern Territory Restaurant of the Year, is having themed buffets every night for $35.

This evening will feature Tastes of Asia with a Middle Eastern

theme tomorrow night.

If you’re feeling like something light, there are $8 dishes of fish, chicken and calamari and chips. Pay $10 and you receive a Coors Beer. All Masters Games attendees are encouraged to join Lasseters Rewards program which automatically entitles you to receive 10 per cent off all purchases and provides all

members with free entry into ‘Crack the Safe’. What better way to enjoy Alice Springs than with $9000 in your pocket if you select the winning safe code. The first draw is at 6pm tomorrow on the Casino floor. Lasseters is a sponsorship partner of the Alice Springs Masters Games.

telling tales from around the Games... There was a crisis at the baseball yesterday after 10kg of chilli dogs were sold on Sunday, leaving organisers with no stock and dozens of hungry participants. Seems the traditional hangover cure was needed following Saturday night’s Opening Ceremony.

There were certainly a lot of players in fine voice during the presentations for the 4BBB on Sunday evening. But the title of King Wally has to go to the guy who tried to do his washing in the drier at his motel and couldn’t understand why they weren’t clean.

Oktoberfest, held at Games partner Lasseters Hotel and Casino, might be behind a fair bit of merriment involving golfers at the Alice Springs Masters Games.

What;s in a name? There are certainly many interesting names among teams at this year’s Games. Particularly intriguing is the

women’s netball team, Kit Kats - an acronym for Cougars In Training Causing Alotof Trouble. Don’t mind the spelling - it’s the thought that counts. If you’re going down to the basketball, make sure to cheer for the Goulburn Galahs. The team has taken part in many Games but has never won gold. The team has sworn they’ll keep coming back until they do.

Exchanging gifts is a tradition that has gained acceptance across the family of Alice Springs Masters Games sports. Most tend to follow the theme of the team name or where they originated. The netball team Angry Birds used the video as an inspiration for their gift - a sling-shot made from a g-string. Sleuth has, and will not, check to see if the gift has been put to use.

Skilled sport looks for support Witness a highly skilled level of Badminton played by experienced proponents of the sport as the individual competition begins today. The teams event was played on Sunday and Monday with reigning Alice Springs Masters Games champion Tassie Bovines again to the fore. One of the seven players in the team of seven, five from Tasmania and two ring-ins from Adelaide and Perth, is David Jones. He has won the Tasmanian open championships “a few” times and is at the Games for the third time and has won gold each time

“Most of the team has been to the Games three or four times,” he said. “The Games are awesome and a lot of fun. “The Badminton competition is a good standard and is enjoyable. “Unfortunately Badminton around Australia is dwindling as there is too much competition from other sports for the kids. “But hopefully that will turn around. “It is a highly skilled sport at the top level and there is more involved than people think. “But it can also be played at a social level.”

David said there is spectator seating available so people are encouraged to watch the games. Badminton is being played in the Marian Centre at the OLSH Sadadeen Campus on Sadadeen Road. The playing surface is a 9mm high impact rebound ace. The ceiling is approximately 10m high. David said there were no problems with the facilities for badminton except “it has been a bit hot”. Games begin at 2pm today, 9am on Wednesday, 2pm on Thursday and Friday.

Golfers put course to the test There was a sea of bronze at the Alice Springs Golf Club as the medals for 4BBB Games were presented on Sunday evening. There were 20 bronze medals as well as the four gold and six silver medals for the two days of events. Participants didn’t need much warming up with scores of 49 and 48 winning the day. Golf spokeswoman Tracey Guerin said the course is in good condition for the trampling it will receive from the 310 golfers taking part in the Alice Springs Masters Games. “The grounds staff have worked hard and done a wonderful job,” she said.

“They have produced a friendly course that will be challenging. “It will be important to hit the fairways as there will still be challenges if you go off it.” There are five golfers aged 80+ among the field, and players with handicaps ranging from local champion Leigh Shacklady, playing off scratch, to the maximum of 36 for men and 45 for women. The lowest handicap visitor to Alice Springs is Joe Clements off two. But handicaps only come into play with the 54-hole stableford points with the number of shots off the stick counting for the 36-hole gross event.

Enjoy the thrills of the fastest sport in Games Possibly the fastest sport in the 2014 Alice Springs Masters Games will race through the picturesque scenery of the MacDonnell Ranges foothills today. About 50 riders will take their quads and motorbikes to the Flat Track Short Circuit Motorcycling at the Alice Springs Motorcycle Club track this morning. There are vantage points around the track where it’s possible to see all the fast and furious action. Anyone with a spare morning would

do well to take in the action and the Centralian scenery. Racing begins at 8.30am and finishes at lunchtime. The format for the flat track and short circuit will be three rounds for all classes. The track layout is hard pack oval, approximately 400m long with sweeping corners, no berms and no jumps. It’s great fun for the riders and great to watch for spectators. The motorcycling program in the

Games began with an enduro at the off road track at Mt Ooramina. The fantastic venue allowed the quads and motorbikes to run simultaneously on separate tracks. The warm day made it difficult for the riders but they held up well. An event to look forward to is the scrambles event at the club on Thursday on the 1.5km track. The Alice Springs Motorcycle Club is a little more than 10km out of town off Ilparpa Road, turn along Butler Road to cross the spur in the ranges.
