Pakistan International Airlines are once again at the centre of a controversial investigation after a ‘drunken’ pilot was apprehended during a pre-flight check at Leeds Bradford Airport last week. 54-year-old Irfan Faiz, from Pakistan, appeared in front of Leeds Magistrates Courts on Friday 20th September charged with being four times over the legal alcohol limit when he boarded the Airbus 310 aircraft.

In an electrifying performance in Leeds, superstar Rahat Fateh Ali Khan closed the show by saying that the response from the audience in Yorkshire was one of the best shows he had ever done. With over 3,500 people, mostly from Leeds and Bradford, flocking the new First Direct Leeds Arena on Sunday Spetember 15th, Rahat and his group of musicians enthralled the crowd with his commercial hits. Despite widely circulating rumours about the possibility of the event being cancelled due to the death of his aunt Naheed Nusrat, wife of internationally acclaimed music legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the show went on. Rahat, at the start of the show, made a short announcement that his love and commitment to his fans was of far too much importance to cancel the show. He reiterated that the “show must go on” and that he will do his best to entertain the crowds. And entertain he did, Rahat belted out some of the most-loved songs and at one point almost a third of the audience was stood up dancing to some of the more upbeat tracks, even the old uncles and hijab-wearing girls joined in! Rahat, speaking to the Asian Express said: “In the UK, there are
different audiences with different tastes but they are all eager to listen to music flavoured with Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, so I hope I fulfilled this.” he said. He said that he was honoured to have performed across the UK but the special importance to him, was being the first South-Asian artist to perform live in the Leeds First Direct Arena.
Rahat’s genius lies in many forms but his ability to maintain his Qawwali and Sufi traditions alive whilst remaining one of the most popular Bollywood singers sets him and his concerts apart from the rest. Rahat flew out to attend the funeral of his aunt the following morning.

Bradford Council is proposing changes to the way people access social care. Bradford Council's Executive, on Tuesday 1 October, will be asked to approve the proposal to change the Fair Access to Care Services (FACS) eligibility threshold in Bradford to provide funding to people who have a substantial or critical need only. The Council is trying to ensure that support for those people in greatest need is sustainable for the future, in the context of big cuts to Council funding. In the last three years the Council has had to make savings of over £100 million because of national spending cuts. Over the next three years it is estimated that another £115 million will be needed to balance the books. That is over 25 per cent of the Council's current budget. More than three quarters of the money will have to be found in the next two years, starting with an immeditae need to find around £38 million next year (2014-2015) and around £50 million in the year after. A three-month public consultation on the proposal to change the Fair Access to Care Services (FACS) eligibility has taken place and will be considered. The FACS threshold is a national set of guidelines which helps determine a person's care needs and whether the individual is eligible for a service from the Council. People can be assessed as either low, moderate, substantial or critical. Bradford currently sets the FACS threshold at moderate and has done since the framework was introduced ten years ago. But 83% of local authorities in England are now operating at substantial and critical levels for their eligibility criteria according to the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services. Increased demand through a growing population of older people and people with disabilities and limited resources mean Bradford are looking at targeting social care at those who are in greatest need whilst at the same time maintaining a strong focus on prevention and early intervention. Last year the Council provided over 2,000 people with short-term assistance and support to help them regain and maintain independence, including elderly people, people with physical or learning disabilities and people with mental health needs. 11,600 people received longer term care and support services, over 80% in their own homes and 18% in care homes. 4,000 carers were also helped to look after vulnerable adults. Coun Amir Hussain, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Adult Services, said: "Bradford Council has been one of the hardest hit financially with budget cuts. We have less money to spend and more people who need support and more pople with complex needs. We need to ensure that there is enough money to support those with the greatest need. "We already have a strong focus on prevention and early intervention. We have traditionally invested well in the voluntary sector, and despite the cuts over the last three years, have tried to protect critical areas of provision, and still invest heavily alongside our NHS partners including Public Health. We will also continue to support family and other informal carers as much as we can. "The Council can no longer afford to be all things to all people, but has to target its reducing resources on those with greatest need."

Alia Ansari: “I had a terrible experience with PIA recently which already made me not want to fly with them ever again, even before this latest news. “I was on my way home from Pakistan and our plane was delayed three hours so we just sat on the plane for all that time and it was absolutely disgusting – the toilets were filthy, the whole plane was very smelly, so much so that the staff kept having to spray it, and there was no air con. “I slept through the meals and when I asked if I could get some food when I had awoken, I was told there was nothing left; I hadn’t eaten for 12 hours and it just made me feel like I was begging. “This incident with the drunk pilot was an amazing example of misconduct, imagine if he had of been able to fly. He deserves everything he gets.”

Wakefield Council is encouraging people to cycle for fun, fitness and for life as part of its cycling legacy. To help anyone who is interested in cycling but does not have a bike Wakefield Council now offer bike hire facilities at Anglers Country Park. The scheme which has been recently launched offers several bikes in various sizes to hire for £2 per hour. Cllr David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for Sport, said: “We are continuing to work with partners to provide cycling opportunities across the district as part of our cycling legacy. “The aim of the bike hire scheme is to open up cycling to everyone – even if you don’t own a bike you can now hire one and give cycling a go. Interest in the cycling amongst our residents is growing and we’ve found our Skyride programme is proving really popular. We are receiving great feedback from participants. I urge everyone to get involved with one of their local rides.” The Council, in partnership with British Cycling, is offering a programme of 25 led rides in the district. The next two rides are on Sunday 29th September. There is a ride at Hemsworth Water Park at 10am at a steady pace and a more challenging ride starting at Featherstone Sports Complex , passing Wintersett Reservoir also starting at 10am. Council for Mosques’ annual report raises some grave concerns

Rising criminality amongst young Muslims and the untold damage to the communities due to the actions of a handful of men is a growing concern says the Council for Mosques (CfM). The organisations annual report raised concerns about Islamaphobia, debilitating health, poverty, failing education and the vulnerability of young Muslims to the culture of crime, drugs, and “heinous” sexual grooming. CfM president Mohammed Mushtaq, general secretary Zulfiqar Karim and chief executive Mohammed Saleem Khan tackled the issues within the report where discussions on sexual grooming and increasing criminality were of particular importance. A call has gone out to the Muslim community, Mosques and other organisations to raise awareness and continue to work hard to provide support to the authorities and the victims of this heinous crime. Mr Karim states that the grooming issue has tarnished the Muslim communities in Britain and said: “We as a community need work harder for better relations within our city with other faith groups and people of other races. We must bring down barriers that have been created over many years and endeavour to have better understanding of our cities.” He added: “This is a society-wide phenomenon which requires a
collective and interactive action supported by sustainable resources. The vast majority of law-abiding Muslims find grooming and other forms of criminality totally abhorrent.” Mr Saleem Khan said: “Although, in minority, the criminals have the capacity to attract major media headlines, regularly undoing the hard work of the peaceful law-abiding majority.” The report also talked about a rise in Islamaphobia and a subsequent threat from right-wing extremists. The CfM talked about Muslims being “demonised and dehumanised”, which in turn enflamed the “right-wing elements of both sides of the divide”. On the survival for families in this economic climate, the CfM said that the traditional strength of Muslim families is under a serious threat. It pointed out that family disharmony, stress, increasing debts and general decline in health and wellbeing has a dampening effect on the family unit. Mr Karim advised against looking for quick-fix answers. He said to ensure that the communities can reverse this downward trend they must improve skills through training so people are able to gain better paid employment. He added: “If Bradford is to fulfil its true potential as a city of high skilled workforce, then the Muslim community need to be part of that vision and plan moving forward. Economic prosperity for the Muslim community is vital for any chance of future generations.”

Wortley family still without answers following grandfather’s death

More than three weeks have passed since the passing of Nazim Din in Leeds, yet questions still remain following the actions leading up to his death. Mr Din collapsed and died just outside his family home in Wortley on the 28th August, following the arrest of one of his sons, and an alleged push by a police officer. An investigation was launched by the Internal Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) following the death yet the family have since been left waiting for answers and ‘waiting for justice’. The grandfather of seven’s funeral was finally held at the Bilal Mosque, Harehills, on the 6th September following three separate post-mortems. Thousands of mourners turned up on the day to pay their respects before he was later buried at Cottingley cemetery. The Grasmere Court resident required assistance to walk and
was, allegedly, knocked to the ground by officials as they were placing one of his sons in the police van following allegations of criminal damage. Mr Din’s family claim Nazim Din was simply trying to tell the authorities that they ‘had the wrong son’; however he was pushed out of the way and subsequently fell to the floor, where he remained, unattended, for more than 20 minutes. Family friend, Mahmood Yousaf, explained the current situation, and hoped that the matter would have been resolved by now. He said: “We have been told
that an inquest has been begun but we have obviously been grieving lately so have not had contact with the police yet. “They have said they want to come and see us and hopefully this will happen soon. “We know whose fault it was and we know there is nothing that can now be done to bring Nazim back. However, to not even haven been offered an apology I don’t think is right. Somebody must take responsibility for their actions.” Mr Din is survived by his wife, five children, seven grandchildren, his mother, brother and four sisters.

A team of courageous staff from Bradford Royal Infirmary took to the skies last week in an attempt to raise money for the establishment’s neonatal unit. After arriving at the top a converted mill building, on Thornton Road, Bradford, on Wednesday 11th September, the group of fundraisers preceded, one-by-one, to abseil down one of the city’s tallest structures. The staff, who are all part of the BRI’s £2million neonatal unit expansion, hoped to raise funds to go towards buying additional home comforts and furnishings for the new unit. Dr Sunita Seal, clinical lead for neonatology, guided her colleagues in the daring feat. Fellow consultant neonatologists, Dr Chris Day and Dr Sam Wallis, also made the descent with Susan Robins, divisional general manager for the Women and Children's division, and Sarah Szpara, clinical service manager for the charity, also on hand. The neonatal unit is currently undergoing an expansion which will see the entire department redesigned for the benefit of babies and
their families and carers. The enlarged unit, which is scheduled to open in February 2014, will have ensuite family bedrooms, a play area within a new relatives’ sitting room and a counselling suite. There will also be a dedicated room for mothers to express breast milk for their preterm babies. The unit currently provides care for up to 27 babies at any one time, has five intensive care cots, five high dependency cots and 17 low dependency cots, and is regularly full. Babies delivered in other hospitals are often transferred to the unit for the highest levels of intensive care.
Passat collided with a tree on Saturday 7th September. Mr Sultan, of Toller Lane, Bradford, was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. Bradford Councillor Imran Hussain was a close family friend of the victim and explained how big of a loss Mr Sultan was

going out of his way to help others in any way he could. He was clearly a very popular character in the community, as shown by the hundreds of people who attended his funeral earlier this month. “I’ve known the family for years now and my thoughts are with them at this time.”

The Give a Gift initiative was a huge success last month with hundreds of toys being donated to local causes. The Leeds General Infirmary and Martin House children’s hospice were the recipients of the gifts, donated to the Hamara centre, Leeds, during Ramadan. Hanif Malik, CEO of the Hamara Centre, was delighted with the projects final outcome and was overwhelmed by the response to the appeal. “We had hundreds and hundreds of gifts and toys donated to the cause which was an absolutely terrific response,” he said. “It was a fantastic communal effort, with the Muslim community showing their generosity throughout the month of Ramadan. Charity is an integral part of our faith and it showed with the Give a Gift initiative.” He added: “To see the response from the kids themselves that was the best part of the day for me; seeing smiles on the faces of the kids, some of whom were celebrating their Eid in hospital, was fantastic. “Parents were also delighted with the project...it is a difficult time for any parent in that sort of situation so it was good to be able
to offer some sort of support through gifts for their children.” Wendy Haigh is a trustee at the LGI and was overwhelmed by the number of presents donated to the appeal. “It’s been absolutely marvelous,” she explained. “All the hard work they have put in and the children have absolutely loved it today. “We have never had anything like this before, not to this extent. It’s overwhelming what the Muslim community has done here. “Children will now remember this occasion rather than their stay in hospital. It’s been like a Christmas day for them really, I think that’s what the project hoped to achieve and I think that is exactly what it has done.” Likewise, Martin House representative, Sarah Tarpey added: “We were overwhelmed by your generosity and cannot thank you enough for the donations of toys and gifts. Thank you for caring enough to do this for our children and their LGI Trustee Wendy Haigh families.”

Raj Bari restaurant faces £30,000 fine
A restaurant in Hythe is facing a potential fine of up to £30,000 following an operation by officers. Officers from the UK Border Agency visited Raj Bari on Seabrook Road on Friday 13 September. Individuals were questioned to check if they had the right to be in the UK. They arrested three Bangladeshi men. One, aged 29, was working in breach of his visa conditions, a 30year-old had overstayed his visa while the other, aged 35, had entered the country illegally. All three men have been placed on immigration bail while their cases are progressed. They face removal from the country if found to have no leave to remain. The restaurant was served a notice warning that a civil penalty of up to £10,000 per illegal worker found will be imposed unless proof is provided that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out. This is a potential total of £30,000. Ceri Williams, Kent and Sussex, immigration enforcement team, Home Office said: “Illegal working has a serious impact on communities, undermining legitimate businesses and taking jobs from those who are genuinely allowed to work. Efforts continue to reduce road casualties in North Yorkshire North Yorkshire Police’s Mobile Safety Camera vans are now even more visible on the county’s roads. Each of the three vans now bears the same livery as other vehicles in the police fleet. The new look resulted from feedback made by a member of the public who contributed to a recent webchat hosted by Chief Constable Dave Jones. Since the three vans started to operate in April this year, the team has carried out 1,845 hours of enforcement patrols and issued 23,595 tickets. Of the tickets issued, more than 19,600 drivers have opted to take a Speed Awareness Course, over 2,600 have been given fixed penalties and almost 440 more being reported for summons to court. Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “Making the roads as safe as possible across our area is a key priority for North Yorkshire Police and the ‘95 Alive’ York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership. “The Mobile Safety Camera vans mean that we have the flexibility to locate the cameras in the right place at the right time, reacting to the latest intelligence about driver and rider behaviour and feedback from the public. “Speed has been shown to be a significant contributory factor in collisions where people are killed or seriously injured. Excessive and
inappropriate speeding not only raises the risk of you being involved in a collision, but also the severity of injury you, and others involved, would suffer. Ultimately, it can be a matter of life or death.” ACC Kennedy added: “As well as responding to public feedback to make the Mobile Safety Camera vans more visible, we already publicise the weekly routes they cover on the North Yorkshire Police website and on the force Facebook and Twitter pages. This information is widely covered and shared by the mainstream media and people using social networking sites. There really is no excuse if you are caught speeding.” The Mobile Safety Camera vans are self-funding with the running costs paid for through the levies generated by speed awareness course fees. A speed awareness course is offered to first time offenders who meet certain criteria. This is an educational alternative to receiving a speeding conviction and penalty points on your driving licence. Any excess levies go back into road safety projects identified by the “95 Alive” York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership. Young people in Bradford are using film, photography and music to raise awareness of domestic abuse as an issue amongst their peers. A music video entitled ‘STUCK in Chains’, which will be available on You Tube, has been written, filmed and produced by young people. They identified domestic abuse within young people’s relationships as an issue that affects them but which can go unnoticed or unchallenged. The video addresses the impact of domestic abuse from the point of view of young people, through rap music and film, and highlights where young people can find help and support. It will be launched during Bradford’s Safeguarding Week on Monday, 30 September at 5.30pm. The launch event will include a screening of the video, live performance of the track, and speeches by young people involved in the project. The initiative has been supported by Bradford Council’s Youth Service and Bradford Safeguarding Children Board. Nola O’Neill, Bradford Council Youth Worker, said: "We really hope that this video and track will reach out to young people who are on the receiving end of an abusive relationship, or who are hurting someone they love, and encourage
them to talk to someone they trust and seek help.” Jason Baker, who co-wrote the lyrics and co-performs, said: "We want young people who are victims of abuse in relationships to know where to go for support. We want them to feel better knowing that they are not alone and that there are people who can relate to them and who care. "We want to spread our message through music because people listen to music all the time and it can influence how they think.” A number of national surveys highlight the impact that domestic
abuse can have in young people’s relationships, the wide variety of ways in which it can take place, and that it often goes unreported. Conor Butler, who directed the video, said: "My passion for filming and music meant that when the opportunity to get involved with the STUCK project came about I jumped at the chance to do something different with a serious subject matter. "During researching for STUCK I spoke to people and watched a lot of related videos, learning what people go through. This got to me emotionally, and I feel good that the

video we have produced will raise awareness and really help people.” The video will be available to organisations such as schools and youth clubs to raise the issue of relationship abuse between young people as part of discussions in a supportive environment. Sofia Tsanou, who sings on the track, said: "We want young people to understand there are different types of abuse in relationships, it’s not just physical, there is emotional abuse as well. "Understanding emotions is hard, and we all need to know how to talk about them. Being close to someone can bring up lots of complicated feelings, no matter what type of relationship you are in. "Whatever your situation, find a positive outlet for your feelings, don’t hurt others or yourself.” Nick Frost, Independent Chair of Bradford Safeguarding Children Board, said: "Domestic violence can blight young people’s lives, and it can seem very hard to escape. This brave music video is a creative way of raising the issue amongst young people, and also gives the message that help is at hand for them, and it is a cycle they can break.” Cllr Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: "This is a
very difficult issue which these young people have taken on, and they deserve great credit for getting this important message out there. The use of the music video in schools and in youth services will hopefully give other young people a greater understanding of this issue and where they can get help if it affects them.”

Bradford MP David Ward has called for more banks lending to small and medium sized manufacturing enterprises (SME’s) in Bradford who are positive about the future growth of the economy and are keen to invest. Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate in the House of Commons, David highlighted that there are encouraging signs that economic prospects are improving. The latest Purchasing Managers Index showed positive growth from 57 in July to 59.1 in August, with some 1,200 manufacturing SMEs providing employment for 15,000 people in the Bradford district alone. A recent business survey from Barclays also showed that there was a real intention for business to invest for the future, with 54 per cent of businesses planning to increase investment over the next 12 months, where 63 per cent plan to invest in new machinery, 62 per cent plan to invest in new product development and 42 per cent plan

A nationwide theatre production which looks to educate its audience about racism in society is set to be launched in Leeds next month. True Colours will be welcomed to the Carriageworks on 25th October. Written and directed by local playwright, Adam Hughes, the play follows the journey of an 82-year-old Yorkshireman who has lived in the same community all his life and witnessed an influx of Asian population.After his wife was mugged by an Asian man, and consequently died of a heart attack, ‘Albert’ adopts a racist attitude. However, after falling one night, the senior citizen is assigned home help, which comes in the form of Janade, a 28-year-old Pakistani. Adam Hughes, from Garforth, Leeds, decided to write the play after watching a programme on the English Defence League (EDL). Seeing racist attitudes being spread across the media, the 22-year-old decided he wanted to explore why these ‘predetermined attitudes’ are held by people in regard to different ethnicities. “I didn’t want to write a play based purely on the EDL, so thought it would be more interesting if I wrote a play about these attitudes on the home front – like in people’s houses,” he explained. “We have worked a lot in Bradford previously and what I came to notice was it’s so multi-cultural but people still live in blocks. All the white people live together, all the Asian, all the Polish, there’s no real integration. Why is this? “I found that really interesting and the more I talked to people the more they had seen these attitudes too. Some people may be seen as stuck in their way but what is interesting with the play is it explores why they are stuck there. It’s not because these people dislike each other, I think it’s just because they have been misinformed. “In the play, Albert is a Christian, crucifix on wall, hasn’t been to church for ten years, whilst Janade is a guy who prays six times a day. Albert is so misinformed and misguided he is like a lot of people; there are misrepresentations in tabloid papers and they just always present negative news on Asians. “If these are the only stories people are reading then they are obviously going to be believe it because they aren’t getting a second opinion. Hopefully the people who come see this play will see the difference and the ignorance that exists and how it has developed.” The 80 minute production will be shown in Leeds, London, Liverpool and Birmingham with the Yorkshire show taking place at the Carriageworks on the 25th and 26th October. As well as the theatre production, workshops will be held throughout the country to further explore the issue of racism and how attitudes have been formed. Organisations such as the Leeds Grand mosque and Leeds Metropolitan’s Islamic society are on board with the Yorkshire workshop, which will take place at The Hub, Holbeck, on Saturday 19th October. “The thing is with racism, prejudice and islamophobia – people know it exists but they are really afraid to talk about it,” Adam stated. “They just sweep it under the carpet and the bump gets bigger and bigger so what we are going to do is get people in a room, who are affected by these issues, and talk about how they feel, their stance, how they’ve been affected. “Then we are going to act out scenes from the play and see how that relates to their lives, how they view it and what feelings it evokes. See if they can understand where the characters are coming from. “People like Albert, we might never agree with them but we need to understand where they are coming from. The council is reminding people about the range of services on offer to recycle or collect waste. The reminder comes as a Beeston man has been prosecuted for flytipping furniture. Instead of donating an unwanted sofa to charity or arranging a bulky waste collection through the council, Michal Ryznar of Brompton View, asked work colleagues to collect it in December 2012. The sofa, initially spotted outside Ryznar’s property by environmental action officers, turned up on a piece of land in a neighbouring street a few days later. Ryznar was prosecuted for flytipping and Leeds Magistrates have ordered him to pay £450 costs and a £75 fine plus a £20 victim surcharge. Ryznar could have avoided the hefty fine by donating the sofa to charity or passing it on through Leeds Freegle. Many charities and organisations across the city will pick up unwanted furniture and take donations of good quality household goods and working electronics. The council’s recycling centres also have dedicated containers so people can drop off household goods to be re-used by local charities. The east Leeds recycling centre at Seacroft is also home to Revive, a re-use shop selling donated items back to the public at low costs. If large items or furniture can’t be reused, the council offers a bulky waste collection service. Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for the environment, said: “One person’s trash really is another person’s treasure. We need to ensure things we no longer want or need are reused and recycled while sending things to landfill should be a last resort. “If your household goods can’t be re-used or recycled then please ensure they’re disposed of properly as you could face a hefty fine for flytipping.” Re-using and recycling furniture and household goods has multiple benefits; with less waste going to landfill the council saves money and good causes can raise funds while providing affordable goods or they can put them to good use in the services they provide. Sounds of Light With the situation in Syria becoming increasingly desperate, it seems everyone is trying their own way to raise funds for those suffering. Human Appeal, a UKbased charity, who has been leading from the fore in providing humanitarian assistance in Syria, is raising the bar. The 22-year-old non-for profit organisation has arranged a 12-city UK & Ireland concert tour, starring multiplatinum and internationally acclaimed artist, Maher Zain. In fact, this is the second year running Human Appeal have organised a concert tour for Syria. Last year the tour, called Sounds of Light, visited three cities: London, Manchester and Birmingham raising around £800,000. This year, Human Appeal is confident in surpassing last year’s feat, both in funds raised and entertainment provided. The artists they have going on tour are signed to the leaders in the Islamic music industry, Awakening Records, a Muslim company that has a myriad of Islamic singers under its wing. On tour with Human Appeal will be Zain, 31(Sweden); Raef, 31 (US) and Harris J, 16 (UK). Hosting the concerts will be Omar Regan, an American comedian and actor, who has appeared in films such as Rush
Hour 2. Co-hosting will be Islam Channel presenter Na'eem Raza, who is perhaps one of the UK's most prolific fundraisers, racking up millions of pounds for charity yearly. The magnitude of this 12-city concert reflects the gravity of Syria’s struggle. Human Appeal recognised the need to organise such a tour – the biggest of its kind to ever hit the UK & Ireland. The tour will not only act as a catalyst in highlighting Syria’s plight to many worldwide, but also set a precedent in the need for more events like this. This year alone Human Appeal has been to Syria on numerous occasions, delivering emergency relief. But most impressively, is their track record in Syria since the conflict began in 2011. Human Appeal was among the first on the ground when the uprisings began. The team has delivered over 4,200 tonnes of bread flour, which has helped up to 10 million people. It’s not every day a former world champion drops in to pay you a visit, yet that is exactly what Amir Khan did on his latest trip to Bradford. The two time former LightWelterweight Champion of the world visited the Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford, on Monday 9th September taking time out of his busy schedule to meet patients, staff and volunteers. The Bolton-born boxer was helping to raise awareness of the care the hospice provides to people across Bradford and Airedale, and supporting its vital position in society.

If people are ill or they need help, they'll come here and they'll be looked after really well. “It's nice to put a smile on patient’s faces too. They really appreciate this facility and it really helps having great staff looking after them.”

Wakefield Council has welcomed 26 new traders to its outdoor markets thanks to its Business Start-up Scheme. The scheme offers new market traders and existing traders trying a new market, a generous discount package to help them get up and running. The scheme has been a huge success and applications to the outdoor markets closed earlier this month. It was being held at all Council markets; Castleford, Normanton, Ossett, Pontefract, South Elmsall and Wakefield.

Children from across Bradford came together last week to attend a special ‘Youth Empowerment Day’. The day was arranged by the Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA), and was put on to help boost the confidence in today’s youths as well as staging fun events for them to partake in. A morning session saw more than 20 courageous youngsters brave the adverse weather conditions to take part a coaching master class. Delivered by a team of qualified junior football coaches and volunteers, the football provided a shining light on an otherwise murky day. After drying off, the young people then returned to the Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia for an afternoon of singing with a specially arranged Nasheed contest. 15 contestants aged between four years to 15 years old

Despite all singers receiving a participation trophy, the winners, in reverse order, were: Awais Mehraj, Muhammad Umair Shah, and in first place, Siraj Shafiq. Nazim Ali is the general secretary at NADA and was delighted to be able to provide trophies to all children on the day. He said: “All participants received Trophies or Prizes for their efforts since we firmly believe they were all winners. “Many commented that this was the first time they had ever won a trophy or prize and we believe this is the encouragement needed and a catalyst for them to become more confident and achieve more personal accolades as they get older.� He added: “We live streamed the full Nasheed Contest and it was heartwarming to see so many parents celebrating their children's achievements and giving them encouragement. “Children thrive on positive reinforcement and this is a mainstay trait of NADA as we place young people at the heart of our social programmes and activities. “After all, our motto is 'Getting to the heart of issues'.� Rounding off the day with a scripted speech from Mr Ali, encouraging young people to thrive in education, have a noble character, and help one another to become model citizens, the ‘Youth Empowerment Day’ was a huge success.

44 years for drug dealers Operation Sabredale continues to succeed in battle against drugs

A group of 17 drug dealers have been jailed for more than 40 years after being found guilty of drug offences last week. The individuals were all arrested under Operation Sabredale, a project launched by West Yorkshire Police in an attempt to tackle the distribution of Class A drugs in Bradford. More than 250 warrants have been executed since Sabredale was introduced across the district in the summer of 2012, leading to more than 200 arrests as well as the seizure of £500,000 in cash and nearly £2million worth of drugs. Out of the latest 17 arrests, ten people were given sentences of more than three years, whilst 23-year-old Qaiser Rehman, of Grantham Road, Great Horton, was handed the heaviest sentence of five years. His brother, Faisal, 19, had his custodial sentence of 18 months suspended for two years, with 180 hours unpaid work. Father of two and carer, Zeshan Hussain, 26, was handed a longer sentence of four years, for his significant role in the distribution channels. Also sentenced were Akheel Ali, 25, of Cecil Avenue, Great Horton, who was jailed for two years; Ansar Mahmood, 24, of Sherborne Road,
Great Horton, was given three years and six months; Amjid Khan, 24, of Boynton Street, West Bowling, was locked up for 27 months; Latvian Igors Kirilko, 31, of Manningham Lane, was jailed for 18 months; and Noman Khan, 35, of Hobine Avenue, West Bowling, was jailed for four years.

Bradford District Community Safety Chief Inspector Dan Greenwood was glad to see so many arrests under this latest operation and hopes it will act as a warning to
people involved in the crime. He said: “The latest sentences handed out to drug dealers operating in the West Bowling area were as a result of the latest activity under Operation Sabredale. “Since we launched Operation Sabredale, a key principle was that we would listen and respond to our communities and work with them to tackle this type of criminality. “The residents of West Bowling told us that drug dealing was an issue and we mounted a painstaking investigation which has led to the sentencing of 19 people to a total of 46 years in jail. More people are due in Court in relation to this operation. “Operation Sabredale will continue to target those who feel they can lead criminal lifestyles in Bradford and I can assure the people of Bradford that more arrests will follow. As long as our community tells us they want to tackle an issue, we will continue to support them and intervene.” He said: “My message to those involved in this kind of criminality is simple; we will investigate your offending, we will arrest you and where possible we will put you in front of a Court. “We continue to urge anyone who has information about drug crime in West Bowling or anywhere else in Bradford District to contact the Police on 101 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

Warning of India money transfer scam
West Yorkshire Police is urging residents to be aware of a financial scam which has seen a Leeds man lose thousands of pounds. The 78-year-old man was contacted by a man claiming to be from Yorkshire Bank's fraud department, and told he would be paid £500 for helping them to investigate fraud offences. The victim was first asked to withdraw £1,470 and transfer the money to India via a company called Moneygram. He was told that this would be returned through a courier service. In total, he transferred £6,570. The money has not been returned and he has now referred the matter to police for investigation. PC Pete Overton of North West Leeds Police, said: “This is a sophisticated scam where criminals have shamefully taken advantage of the good will of an elderly Leeds man.
“The victim believed he was doing something helpful. Instead, he has been left thousands of pounds out of pocket. “I would urge anyone who receives a similar phone call to report the matter immediately to police. This doesn’t appear to be a one-off offence and could possibly be a nationwide scam.” Yorkshire Bank confirmed that it did not approach anyone for help with investigating fraud offences and said that the scenario was a variation of a crime known as ‘advanced fee fraud’, where people were approached by phone, email or letter and asked to pay a fee up front to later receive a greater reward. “We advise everyone to be suspicious of any approach which fits this scenario,” said a Yorkshire Bank spokesman. Anyone who is approached with a similar proposition is asked to contact Action Fraud on 0300 1232 040.
Indian-born Vijay Bhutada hopes that his University of Huddersfield studies will help propel him into a career in the dazzling world of Bollywood. But, in the meantime, he is carrying out research which could help teachers inject some movielike pizzazz into their lectures and classes. Vijay, aged 25, is from Mumbai, where the world’s largest film industry is based. Competition to gain a foothold in Bollywood is intense he admits, but when he returns to India after completing two University of Huddersfield degrees, he aims to find work in film editing and effects, which has become his passion. He has raised his profile by entering international competitions and earning commendations from judges. He gained his technical knowledge from a three-year BA degree in Digital Film and Visual Effects Production. After graduation he then embarked on research for an MSc degree at the University of Huddersfield, supervised by its Head of Informatics, Dr Rupert Ward. Vijay has devised a project, mixing pedagogy (the method/ practice of teaching) and informatics, in which he examines ways in which lecturers could add variety and interest to their sessions by incorporating speciallycreated ‘motion graphic’ video film segments, based on the course material. “Instead of tutors speaking continuously, they will play an animated video to break up the lecture,” said Vijay. “It would be interactive, entertaining and colourful, with sound. I like movies, so I thought, why not use them to help with teaching?” As part of his research, Vijay is working on an animated video based on a lecture material by Dr Ward
on the topic of software project management. But he has also been developing his credentials as a film editor and enjoyed success in the Mountain Film Festival, which takes place annually in Wanaka, New Zealand. Entrants to the festival’s film editing competition are supplied with 45 minutes of action-packed footage, featuring outdoor sporting activities such as climbing, water-skiing, biking and kayaking. They must then produce their own threeminute trailer.

n a previous article I discussed the discovery of the brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in a former rugby union player with a further 10 potential cases coming to light. CTE is a degenerative and incurable disease that compromises neural activity and is linked to memory loss, depression and dementia. The presence of CTE in America Footballers was brought into the headlines following the suicides of at least six NFL players since 2011. The stark reality potentially linking CTE with the suicides of these athletes can be seen in the actual suicide of former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson. The double super bowl winner retired from the league in 1993, refreshed his economics degree with a business course at Harvard and entered the food business, purchasing three McDonald's franchises in Louisville, Kentucky, before setting up his own business, Duerson Foods, supplying sausages to chains. But from around 2005 (over 10 years after retirement from the NFL) Duerson’s life began to change. His severe headaches increased in frequency whilst the profitability of his business was on the slide. His marriage broke down and his debts piled up. On 17 February 2011, Duerson took his own life. He had placed his NFL Man of the Year trophy, awarded in 1987, on a table beside the spot at which he fell, along with a note that read; “Please, see that my brain is given to the NFL’s brain bank”. The request might have been deemed an anomaly had it not married up with the unusual method of Duerson's suicide. He shot himself in the heart. Dr Robert Stern, a co-director of the Boston University

research group (home of the NFL ‘brain bank’) cautioned that CTE cannot explain every action a suffer will take. “When it comes to suicide and CTE it is possible that in some individuals the combination of CTE-related symptoms of poor impulse control, depression and cognitive impairment may indeed lead to suicide...however we can never clearly point to any cause-and-effect relationship in any one case.” The scariest part of CTE is that the mild and moderate cases do not show up on CT scans or other imaging. The condition in such cases can only be definitively diagnosed by an autopsy. So where does that leave us with cases of liability? The NFL has settled out of court following mediation with over 4,500 former players. Clubs will be vicariously liable for their players unless they can prove the player was carrying out a personal vendetta unconnected to the employment relationship. The ‘Bountygate’ scandal was quite the opposite. A programme run by former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, in which defenders paid into a kitty and received cash rewards for injuring opposing players: $1,000 if an opponent was carted off the field; $1,500 if he was knocked out of the game altogether; amounts doubling and tripling in the playoffs. With such obvious individual intent (albeit actively encouraged by the club’s staff) will we seen player -vplayer lawsuits? September this year saw Gareth Dyas and Steven Lawrie plead guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm in a game between Kippax Knights and Nevison Leap. Former Wakefield Wildcats and Castleford Tigers player Christopher Hall sustained lifechanging injuries including a blood clot on the brain. Dyas and Lawrie have paid £500 and £2,000 in compensation respectively but will they be liable for further costs if Hall goes on to suffer at the hands of CTE or other related brain injuries? A family from London is appealing for an Asian bone marrow donor to step forward and help save the life of their six-year-old son. Rayaan Siddiqui was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency disease called HLH in May, a disease which only effects half a dozen children each year in the UK. The youngster is currently being treated with chemotherapy and steroids but ultimately his disease can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. There are currently thousands of people on the bone marrow register; however, before someone can donate their bone marrow, it must closely match that of the person who needs it. Currently, certain ethnic communities are under represented on the bone marrow register meaning it is more difficult, in situations likes Rayaan’s, to find suitable donors. The Siddiqui family are now urging people of Asian
background (Pakistani, Bengali, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Mauritian) to register in a bid to find a match for their son. A statement on behalf of Rayaan’s mother and father, Ghazali & Navida Siddiqui, highlighted the urgency required for a donor to come forward. “Up until eight weeks ago Rayaan was a fit and healthy six-year-old boy, doing all of the fun things that kids of his age do,” they wrote. “At the beginning of May he started getting fevers which were constant and continued unabated for two weeks. Over that period, the GP’s kept telling us that everything appeared fine with him, and that he should bounce back. “After two full weeks of fevers we took him to A&E where we got the same message of nothing being obviously wrong with him. They took a blood test and immediately realised that Rayaan was very ill as all his blood counts were very low. “At the end of three weeks he was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency disease called HLH…he was so ill that
he had to be transferred under emergency ambulance to Great Ormond Street ICU, where he remained on a ventilator for a few days. “He has improved considerably since that time; he is being treated with chemotherapy and steroids but ultimately his disease can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. None of his immediate family are a donor match and we are therefore searching for an unrelated donor on the British bone marrow registry. “This is what this appeal is about today. Britain’s huge donation
Britain is to give £997million to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria over the next three years in a hope to defeat the three killers. Overseas aid minister Justine Greening said the British government would contribute a billion pounds, or £333m a year, for the 2014-2016 funding period. The Geneva-based Global Fund - the world's biggest donor of funds to fight the three infectious diseases - said earlier this month it needs $15 billion (£9.4bn) over the next three years to begin bringing them under control. Britain's pledge, which is dependent on other donors dedicating enough to reach the $15 billion goal, is the secondlargest by any government so far. The United States has asked for $1.65 billion a year for the Global Fund in its 2014 budget.

Diane Krish-Veeramany went into labour whilst working at the Manford Primary School and subsequently gave birth on the premises. The 30-year-old teacher was only at 39 weeks when she gave birth to her baby boy, Jonah; just 20 minutes after contractions began. With paramedics unable to get to the scene in time, it was left to teaching assistants Dita Gojnovci, Chris Sword and Sam Mustafa to help deliver the child, whilst taking directions from paramedics over the phone. Head teacher, Tina Jacobs, had phoned for an ambulance when it became apparent Mrs Krish-Veeramany was going into labour but the healthy 9lb

SHAMEFUL: 41-year-old Shaheda Lorgat appeared at Preston Crown Court for stealing £21,000 from Blackburn College
A woman from Blackburn who fraudulently spent money on a college’s credit card, has been jailed for 12 months. Shaheda Lorgat, 42, of Mossdale, previously pleaded guilty to 19 counts of fraud by abuse of position, which took place working whilst she was working as a purchasing officer at Blackburn College. Although she revealed her face in court, she kept it hidden from Press photographers under a niqab. Police sources revealed a rising trend among Muslim women for wearing the full veil outside court to escape scrutiny. Neighbours of Lorgat said she rarely wore a niqab in public and pictures on her Facebook page
show her without a veil. The case comes at a time of increased public debate over Muslim head-dress, following the decision by a college in Birmingham to scrap a ban on veils amid protests from students. Lorgat’s fraud came to light in February last year when a member of staff noticed discrepancies on the college’s credit card. Between 17th July 2008 to 17th January 2012, Lorgat used the college’s credit card to the sum of over £21,000, spending the money on a trip to Alton Towers, holidays, paying for personal solicitors bills, renovations and repairs on her bathroom, prescription sunglasses and food shopping. Lorgat, who claimed she started using the credit card
following the breakdown of her 20-year marriage, voluntarily removed the niqab before entering the dock. Speaking after sentencing, PC Anita Whittle from Blackburn Police said: “I am pleased with today’s sentence, especially given the amount of money that Shaheda Lorgat spent on Blackburn College’s credit card which was there to be used for things that benefit the college and its students. “I hope that today’s sentence shows that fraud of any kind will not be tolerated, and those who think that it’s acceptable to commit this type of crime will be brought before the courts.” Lorgat was given a 12 month sentence for each of the 19 offences which will run concurrently.
Workers at the Royal Mail postal service will begin voting next week on whether to strike, the Communication Workers Union said on Friday 20th September. Just one week after the government formally launched the firm's privatisation, the CWU has confirmed a strike ballot would be held to ensure the rights of all the workers. Union leaders seeking guarantees on pay and conditions are opposed to the government's plans to sell off a majority stake in Royal Mail through a public listing. In July the CWU rejected a threeyear pay offer. Industrial action is expected by the government and may affect investors' demand for the firm, but Business Minister Michael Fallon said last week that the possibility of strikes would not be allowed to derail the floatation. Royal Mail said in a statement it was very disappointed that the CWU had confirmed the strike ballot. Asian

Former Tory party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft said that his findings show that the majority of the British public felt the Government did not have “any strategy” for dealing with immigration. He said: “Whatever people’s view of immigration itself, few think any recent government has had any real grasp of it, or that any of the parties do today. “Politicians underestimated the size of the challenge, lost control of the situation, refused for too long to acknowledge that any problems might result and are now struggling but failing to cope. “Most do not feel there is any strategy for dealing with the number of migrants, either for their successful integration into British society, or for managing the effects they see or fear in terms of housing, infrastructure, jobs, the NHS, schools, or the benefits
system.” Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May have already stated their intent, earlier this year, to reduce net migration from non-EU countries to less than 100,000 a year by 2015. More figures from the report also show that a staggering 77 per cent of respondents said they thought a dramatic reduction in immigration would reduce pressure on public services and welfare, making it easier for Britons to find jobs. Meanwhile, the Home Office “Go home or face arrest” adverts were shown to have 79 per cent of respondents in favour of the message, however just 17 per cent said they felt the policy would work. Likewise, 24 per cent said that they or their family had been denied access to housing or other public services because immigrants seemed to have been given priority.

50 years for drugs gang
A north west drugs gang has been jailed for a total of almost 41 years for a conspiracy to flood the region with class A drugs. Ringleader Mustaq Bagas, headed a well-established organised crime group with far reaching contacts and associates extending across the Ribble Valley, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire areas. The group, which included Preston man Mubarack Patel, of Nimes Street, Callon, was responsible for the buying, selling and movement of significant amounts of cocaine and heroin throughout the North West of England. During the course of the investigation, which started in early 2012, police recovered more than nine kilos of heroin, half a kilo of cocaine, over 13,000 ecstasy tablets, over 125 kilos of cutting agents and almost £225k cash. The haul was found during a series of raids and seizures late 2012 and early 2013 at premises in Blackburn and Greater Manchester. The final gang member Tahir Ghafoor, 30, of Lavington Avenue, Cheadle, has now been sentenced to six years imprisonment after previously pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply class a drugs. Mustaq Bagas, 39, of London Road, Blackburn; Maqsood Bagas, 24, of Mavis Road, Blackburn; Usman Akhter, 29, of Avallon Way, Darwen; Hussain Ahmed, 33 of Northmoor Road, Manchester; Nizam Patel, 24, of Trevor Close, Blackburn; Mubarak Patel, 34 of Nimes Street, Preston; Mohebour Rahman, 31, of South Street, Longsight, Manchester and Ijaz
Saeed, 29, of Helme Lane, Meltham, West Yorkshire, appeared Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to their part in a conspiracy to supply class a drugs. Mustaq Bagas was sentenced to ten years eight months imprisonment; Maqsood Bagas was jailed for six years; Akhter was given five years; Ahmed was given three years four months; Mubarak Patel was jailed for five years four months; Rahman was given four years four months and Saeed was given six years. An eighth man - Nizam Patel was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which was suspended for two years. He will also be required to complete 200 hours unpaid work. Speaking after sentencing, Det Insp Mark Winstanley who was part of the investigating team, said: “I welcome the sentence handed down to Tahir Ghafoor today as it reflects the seriousness and level of involvement that he had in the supply of drugs, along with the others who were sentenced in July. “This result is the last in a long and complex investigation which has involved a number of enquiries spanning across different police forces. “Ghafoor and the others were working together to supply drugs to communities across the entire region and had to be stopped. “This type of crime blights our communities and destroys lives so I hope that today’s result send a clear message to those involved in organised crime and drug dealing: we know who you are. “You will be targeted and be prepared to receive a lengthy prison sentence.”

Pakistani Christians protest over bloody church bombing Angry Christians protested across Pakistan on Monday to demand better protection after a devastating double suicide bombing at a church killed more than 80 people. The attack on All Saints church in the northwestern city of Peshawar after a service on Sunday is believed to be the deadliest ever to target the country's small Christian minority. Christians demonstrated in towns and cities across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar, demanding better protection from authorities. A Muslim man was killed in Karachi when scuffles broke out at a Christian protest outside a mosque, police said. In the city's eastern neighbourhood of Korangi, police used tear gas and fired aerial gunshots to disperse protesters, who set fire to a house and other properties. More than 600 protesters blocked a major highway in Islamabad for several hours during the Monday morning rush hour, burning tyres and causing long tailbacks, and later
about 2,000 people gathered to protest outside parliament. In Peshawar, about 200 demonstrators took to the streets, smashing windows at the main Lady Reading hospital, where many of the victims were treated, and blocking the main Grand Trunk road. In front of All Saints church, more than 100 people chanted slogans demanding justice and attacking the national government for failing to protect Christians. And they had harsh words for cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) party runs the provincial government in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The death toll from the blasts rose to 82 on Monday, according to medics, with about 130 in total wounded. Senior Peshawar police official Najeeb-ur-Rehman said security around churches in the city would be stepped up, but survivors of the bombing spoke of their fears of further violence.
The small and largely impoverished Christian community suffers discrimination in the overwhelmingly Muslim-majority nation but bombings against them are extremely rare. The 400 or so worshippers were exchanging greetings after the service when the bombers struck, littering the church with blood, body parts and pages from the Bible. The walls were pockmarked with ball bearings that had been packed into the bombs to cause maximum carnage in the busy church. Sectarian violence between majority Sunni and minority Shiite Muslims is on the rise in Pakistan but Sunday's bombings will fuel fears the already beleaguered Christian community could be increasingly targeted. A faction linked to the Pakistani Taliban on Sunday claimed the attack, saying it was to
avenge US drone strikes on Taliban and Al-Qaeda operatives in the country's tribal areas along the Afghan border. But on Monday the main spokesman for the umbrella Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group said they were not responsible, adding that it was "an attempt to sabotage the atmosphere" of proposed peace talks. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called several times for talks with the Taliban and two weeks ago won
backing from the country's main political parties. But speaking in London on Sunday he said the government was "unable to proceed further" with talks following the church attack. Pakistani Christians, who make up just two percent of the country's 180-million population, often lead a precarious existence, many living in slum-like "colonies" cheek-by-jowl with Muslims and fearful of allegations of blasphemy, a sensitive subject that can provoke outbursts of public violence.

Pakistan earthquake One person has died, and eight others are injured following a massive earthquake in Southern Pakistan earlier this week. Measuring 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale, the earthquake hit the remote southwest province of Balochistan on Monday 23rd September. The town of Awaran suffered the only fatality, despite the size of the quake suggesting that many more could have been killed. With a depth of approximately nine miles,
the quake struck 43 miles northeast of Awaran and 71 miles northwest of Bela, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Mud-walled homes tumbled in Awaran, according to Latif Kakar, director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Balochistan, yet devastation could have been a lot worse. The tremors lasted for a total of two minutes whilst aftershocks could be felt as far away as Karachi, 275 miles away from the main point of impact.
Fatal Philippines floods Heavy monsoon rains continue to cause deaths across the Northern Philippines, with many more people reported as missing. Most of the latest victims were children and many were killed by landslides set off by the rain in the province of Zambales on Luzon, the largest island in the archipelagic nation. At least 10 of the 16 people killed in the town of Subic were aged 12 or younger. An 84-year-old man died of hypothermia in nearby Castillejos
India’s oil minister shies away from crisis
according to the Philippines News Agency, and two people drowned in the neighbouring province of Bataan. A landslide engulfed a house in San Marcelino, Zambales, on Sunday night and four of its inhabitants, including three young children, remain missing, authorities said. More than 11,000 people have been displaced by the effects of the monsoon whilst parts of Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan are still under as much of four feet of water.
India's oil minister shied away from introducing comprehensive energy subsidy cuts, instead calling on his countrymen to embrace car pooling, buses and cycling as well as staggered working hours in a bid to curb fuel consumption. The struggling Asian economy - the world's fourthlargest user of energy - is battling a weak rupee that has increased the price of oil products as economic growth has halved to 4.4 percent from the 8-9 percent seen in the boom years. Delhi is also seeking to rein in a record current account deficit that is in part fuelled by energy imports. A falling rupee also boosts inflation and the
wholesale price index measure of inflation, the benchmark for the country's central bank, rose to a six-month high of 6.1 percent in August. M. Veerappa Moily told a news conference on Tuesday he hoped to save $5 billion (3 billion pounds) from fuel conservation measures even as he shied away from substantial measures such as raising diesel and other fuel prices as the electoral cycle hots up with polls due to be held by May 2014. "As of now there is no proposal to raise prices," Moily said, referring to diesel subsidy changes. India, where energy consumption per person is among the lowest in the world, has little room to cut fuel use as it tries to power exports and agriculture. Diesel accounts for more than 40 percent of fuel demand, or around 1.4 million barrels per day, the bulk of which is used by trucks, farmers and industry. The $5 billion savings is part of a campaign outlined earlier this month to save up to $25 billion this year, although the weak Indian currency and rising global oil prices already mean that rupee price hikes for diesel have failed to match the dollar price gains for oil. The government realistically aims to save about $12-15 billion, a source familiar with the plans said after Moily's press conference.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s widow passes away By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Naheed Nusrat, wife of internationally acclaimed music legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, sadly passed away last week after reportedly losing her battle with cancer. The wife of the Qawwali pioneer, and aunty of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, had been battling the disease when she died at the Credit Valley Hospital in Ontario, Canada on Friday 13th September. Naheed was widowed following the death of her husband in August 1997 and is survived by one daughter. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was in Leeds on the day of his aunty’s passing, with his First Direct Arena concert taking place just two days later. He expressed his grief in the following statement: “I am extremely saddened by the recent demise of aunt Naheed. She was a devoted mother and a pillar of strength to my Ustad and uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali
Naheed Nusrat tributes pour in Khan. “We had always enjoyed a close relationship and I was in constant contact with her even after she moved to Canada. My thoughts and prayers are with my niece and aunt Naheed’s family.” He added: “May Allah grant her soul eternal peace and give strength to her family to bear this loss.”

Puppy love After recently adopting two dogs who were found struggling in the recent monsoon rains, Raveena Tandon Thadani is teaming up with animal campaigners. Raveena hopes that her support for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, will encourage everyone to follow her example. In the ad, Raveena appears with her beloved dogs Chotu, a “community dog” whom she brought home off the streets, and Cuddles, who was adopted from an animal shelter, next to the words “Puppy Love: Adopt, Don’t Buy!” Raveena also sat down for a video interview with PETA India in which she explains why she was inspired to adopt all five of the dogs with whom she shares her life. “I would rather help an animal in distress rather than just go and buy
another dog,” she says. “These strays deserve a chance, and they need our help, they need our love and they need our compassion.” PETA say that every time someone buys a dog from a breeder or a pet shop, a dog in a shelter loses his or her chance at finding a good home. They are keen to make people aware that pedigree dogs, who have been bred for certain physical traits, are susceptible to hip dysplasia, heart defects, epilepsy, eye and ear infections and a host of other ailments. This is not Raveena’s first campaign for PETA India. She previously wore a “bloody” snake-print gown in an ad that pointed out how “wearing exotic skins kills.” Raveena will soon be seen on the silver screen in a Telugu film.

12 people have been killed and eight more injured after at least one gunman went on a rampage at a US Naval Installation earlier this week. The Washington Navy Yard, located just three miles from the White House, was the scene of the terrifying attack which culminated in the death of the military personnel and one gunman. 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, from Fort Worth, Texas, was killed following a standoff with police. Formerly a petty officer 3rd class who served full-time in the naval reserve from 2007-11, the assailant was working on a US Navy intranet network, which gave him legal access to the grounds. It is reported that Alexis was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a handgun that he took from a police officer at the scene. Cathy Lanier, the police chief for the District of Columbia, said the response of police officers had been “nothing short of heroic” after the attack on the 3,000 populated establishment. “With at least 12 confirmed dead at this point, I think the actions by the police officers without question helped to reduce the number of lives lost,” she said. “So our hearts go out to the families, certainly of all the victims here, but our gratitude to the front-line officers who ran into danger this morning.” Chief Lanier told reporters that the attacker “was engaged in shooting with police officers” when he died and “there was no question he would have kept shooting.” Barack Obama ordered flags to be

Ranbir Kapoor What prompted you to sign for Besharam? It was several things really. I am a big fan of director Abhinav Kashyap’s work. Abhinav knows how to tell a simple yet very interesting story. This film has it all; it has romance, action and comedy. It tells a simple yet effective story. I was also drawn to my character. It is a very different type of character to play and it allowed me to express myself in a new and creative way.
Were there any particularly special moments whilst making the film? The entire film was a blast to work on. My character ‘Babli’ has very few hang-ups and inhibitions, he more or less does as he wants and so this was fun to portray. Also, I had fun working with my co-stars and my parents.

Do you feel pressure to have the same success as your famous parents? Overall, I don’t feel that it has been a hindrance to come from a famous family. I am the Indian brand ambassador for Barcelona Football Club and I’ve been lucky enough to see them at different stadiums. In the film I insisted on my character playing football whenever possible! Bollywood recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary. How do you think the industry has developed?
I think it is a very proud moment for the Indian film industry to celebrate such a milestone. I feel honoured to be a part of the Indian I strongly believe that charity film industry. A good film is often one that takes elements from its own culture and tradition rather than trying to just incorporate a mainstream/Western format. For example in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee took inspiration from his own culture and created a fantastic film.

The cheeky and fiercely independent Babli takes as his life motto: "Na Samaan Ka Moh, Na Apmaan ka Bhay", translated as "No Want for Respect, No Fear of Disrespect". Pluggin it! Remember that strange, futuristic BMW with the blue lights that Tom Cruise drove in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol? Well, it’s an electric car concept that BMW has been showing in various forms at auto shows the past two years and finally BMW has used the IAA 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show to finally unveil its plug-in hybrid sports car – the BMW i8. Joining the BMW i3 electric car that was launched in July, the BMW i8 is designed to embody the same “i” values, with an uncompromised drive experience from a car that's firmly looking towards the future. Like the i3, the i8 features a carbonfibre reinforced plastic passenger cell to provide lightweight strength, with the distinctive body panels making up the futuristic external design. But a sports car is more than looks, it's about performance and the BMW i8 has a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. There's a three-cylinder 231hp combustion engine to drive the rear wheels, as well as a 96kW electric motor to drive the front wheels, with lithium-ion batteries. The electric motor provides an acceleration boost to the combustion engine, meaning the BMW i8 will get
up to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. There's a limited 155mph top speed from a combined output of 362bhp. These figures might not turn heads in the world of sports cars, but it's achieved with emissions of 59g/km of CO2 and a stated 113mpg fuel efficiency. You can drive up to 22 miles on the electric motor alone at speeds of up to 75mph and the battery will charge on overrun, as you'd expect from a hybrid. BMW tells us that you can charge the battery to 80 per cent in 2 hours from a mains charger. There are a number of driving modes, from the pure electric through to sports. In the normal "comfort" mode, BMW say you'll get 310 miles from a full petrol tank and fully charged battery. Of course, having a hybrid arrangement, you'll not find yourself facing a lengthy recharging once the battery runs flat. Inside the BMW i8 is futuristic, with a fully digital instrument display and integration with the ConnectedDrive system, so you'll be connected to the world and your smartphone, with all the mod cons. The BMW i8 will be available to order from September 2013, with deliveries expected in July 2014. It will cost you £99,845.

Honda reveals first details of its Civic Type R
Turbocharged Honda has revealed that the hotly anticipated new Civic Type R will be powered by a direct injection turbocharged 2litre engine and will deliver at least 280 PS. The car has already been put through its paces by Honda’s WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini and a film demonstrating its storming performance and handling on the Nurburgring has been put up for viewing. Last year Honda confirmed ambitions for the Civic Type R to become the fastest front wheel drive car around the infamous Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The car still faces a further two years of development before going on sale in 2015 however, on-track testing has already begun. Manabu Nishimae, President, Honda Motor Europe, said: “We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.” Honda has also confirmed the Civic Tourer will achieve impressively low CO2 emissions from just 99g/km and an outstanding 74.3mpg when powered by Honda’s 1.6 i-DTEC engine. The British built Civic Tourer builds on the strengths of the hatchback model, offering class leading boot space and practicality and will go on sale in early 2014. Women pack powerful purchasing power, representing a huge market opportunity for car dealers. This year however, at the Women's World Car of the Year awards the Ford Fiesta 1.0l Eco-Boost came out on top as the most economic choice. The judges panel consisted of respected published and specialist women motoring writers and had the task of primarily reflecting the preferences of women buyers through the ballot box of women motoring writers from around the world. The judging categories had a

three-tier voting system to ensure all angles were covered in that particular category. The Family Car category, for instance, included childfriendliness, storage space and value-for-money and individually. Chief Judge, Sandy Myhre of New Zealand, said that judges were asked to supply their own short list from 2013 model year cars they've tested. From there, a short list was formed to determine the finalists and from the finalist list judges choose their supreme winner and the podium finishers. She said The presentation of the trophies and certificates will this year take place in London at the beginning of October.

After his controversial actions away from the sport, and six months of being overlooked by selectors, Monty Panesar has been included in England’s squad for the Winter Ashes tour of Australia. The left arm, spin bowler impressed during his loan spell at Essex last season and now hopes to concentrate on his onfield performances. With 48 test matches to his name, and 164 wickets, the Sikh bowler could prove a vital instrument in England’s performances over the Christmas period and offers an alternative approach to the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Panesar hasn’t been included in a test squad since his notorious actions at a Brighton nightclub earlier this year when he urinated on a bouncer. However, national selector, Geoff Miller, is confident the left-armer is back on the right track and ready to once again be involved in the England setup. He said: “There's a very strong management in that side to help all aspects of it.

“He's appreciated he's made errors and he's very sure that those errors are behind him now. “He appreciated the reason why he was sent home, accepted that and knuckled down. He's been selected because that's been rectified. “He's an experienced international player and it's up to him to actually produce the goods for us. He's very prepared to let his bowling do the talking for him, so I'm prepared to accept that.” Speaking about his return to the team, Monty said: “Where England are concerned, I’ve always had the same mindset: I’ve got to make sure I’m
bowling well, my rhythm is good and I am equipped to deal with any situation. “You never know when the next opportunity might be around the corner, and if that chance comes, I need to be able to grab it.” The Winter Ashes tour will officially begin on 21st November with the first test held at Brisbane, and the fifth finishing on the 7th January. Following that, a five-round ODI series will take place between 12th January and 26th January, before concluding with three T20 games, staged from the 29th January to 2nd February.

For 2013, The Asian Football Awards have attracted a higher profile of sponsors with a greater input and support from many of the UKs top clubs and football organisations. “Our aim is to see a steady stream of Asian footballers making their debuts at league clubs across the UK…it’s only a matter of time before this is a reality as there are so many talented players on the peripherals of making it,” Mr Rihal added. Liverpool football club’s doctor, Zaf Iqbal, will be one nominee looking to win a prestigious honour for the second year running after being shortlisted for recognition at the prestigious Asian Football Awards. Dr Iqbal was the recipient of the first ever Behind the Scenes - Medical Award at last year's inaugural ceremony - and this year he could repeat the feat. Also nominated from the Merseyside giants are Abu Nasir, ethnic minorities representative on the LFC supporters' committee, and Academy youngster Yan Dhanda, named in the Up and Coming Player category. The AFA 2013 ceremony will be a starstudded event once again with dignitaries from the world of football as well as a number of prominent celebrities and footballers. Back page story continued However this is when the script changed. From the 1st round to the 8th round, Jazza Dickens took the fight to Galahad beating the Kid to the punch on numerous occasions. People expected the fight to run one way but amazingly super fit Dickens got the upper hand more than once or twice should I say. This is not to say that Galahad did not fight well but from my viewpoint the Kid was too cautious in the first couple of rounds and one could see he was totally focussed on landing the perfect shot. To his disadvantage the Kid made Dickens look like he was comfortably winning the fight with his pitter patter punches. To be honest Jazza did throw a lot of these type of punches and they did catch the eyes of the judges. Galahad’s fairy tale ending at this stage looked all but a dream. As the whole affair started to become a nightmare, the atmosphere was terrific and very voluble but one could see the home crowd, like myself, were all becoming very anxious as the fight was close and going the other way. The pace was fast and furious, Jazza was supposed to be subdued at this stage but this was not the case. The notable rounds for Dickens were rounds three and four where he produced perfect shots to the body, the head and five punch combinations. Jazza was so dangerous at this point, his punches landing were clearly and cleanly seen by the judges not to mention all the partisan fans. Again these rounds were Jazza’s best work and so convincing. Galahad tried to slow the pace and pick Dickens off at range, which he did do successfully on occasions. By round five both Galahad and Jazza went toe-totoe and this was the telling point of the fight as, from my viewpoint, it was brilliant to see two supreme athletes throwing caution to the wind and having a go to prove who was the master of the other. At this point Jazza Dickens started to look shabby but again the rounds were close and in favour of the Liverpool man. I felt that in rounds six and seven Kid Galahad’s timing was slightly off and he had a hint of frustration as he realised it wasn’t going to be an easy nights work. By now Jazza’s face was marked and bruised up with blood was leaking from his face. However that did not bother Dickens one bit, he was determined to get that belt. And boy was he still dangerous as he caught Kid Galahad with a heavy overhand left flush on his head, which sent a spray of sweat through the air. Now by the eighth round the fight was so close for both fighters that I personally had it a draw. The ninth round was a fantastic round of boxing for Kid Galahad. He picked off Jazza Dickens with ease at range, his footwork, his balance was pure boxing artistry. If Carlsberg did boxing this would be it. It was like Naseem Hamed revisited. The ease he subdued Dickens with was pure magic, but then out of the blue the referee jumped in and stopped the fight. He

took a point off the Kid for pushing and holding Jazza Dickens’ head down in a clinch. To be noted, the referee had previously given the Kid a couple of warnings for the same misdemeanour. I thought this was crazy for the referee to do this at such a major point in the fight. All the hometown fans were enraged and thought the fight fix was in. All of a sudden from a close fight Jazza Dickens was now in front by two rounds. One could see an upset on the cards of the hometown favourite. Everybody was nervous, promoter Mick Hennessy, Channel 5 and the hometown crowd as the round ended. The only one who was cool, calm and collected was master trainer Dominic Ingle. It was Ingle’s cool calm demeanour that was transferred to and absorbed by Kid Galahad as he sat in the corner during the rest period following round nine. Ingle told him “you must line Dickens up and let your hands go, you go out there now and finish this kid, simple. Pace yourself now, pick your shots it is tight. You have 3 rounds to do it in. All he (Jazza Dickens) has to do is to stay on his feet and he wins this
fight. You have to go out there now and put it on him.” If that was not motivating enough then I am the Popes daughter! And boy did Kid Galahad step up. The expression on his face was not one of defeat, it was of lets go to work now. He did just that. The Kid upped the pace of the fight, like a leopard homing in on its prey. Just like a rocket he shot straight on to Jazza Dickens, throwing devastating crunching punches from all angles into Jazza’s face. By this time Jazza’s face was a pulp of red mess, he was visibly tired unable to stop the onslaught. The pace, the punches, the timing were so ferocious. Jazza tried to rally but the Kid was not about to let him off the hook this time with the fight in the balance and slipping away. Galahad lined Jazza up and boom! With unbelievable power and skill the Kid delivered his WMD (weapon of mass destruction) and boy it blasted Jazza into oblivion with a flash bang effect. I wouldn’t be surprised if the UN nuclear inspectors come knocking on Kid Galahad’s door after this.
The Kid switched stance and CHAMPION: Spoils of war threw one almighty perfect left hand shot knocking Jazza out. If ever the Kid needed a punch that was the one and it took the fight right out of the judges hands delivering him the coveted Lord Lonsdale belt and the British title. The hometown fans were ecstatic as Jazza was knocked to the canvas. The referee called halt to the contest in round ten as Dickens was clearly in no condition to continue. His corner team knew the fight was over for him and threw in the towel for good measure. The victorious Kid said after: “I knew I was behind on the scorecards. I knew he was going to come out fast in the first few rounds. “He came out like a bull, but I just knew when I find my range, my distance –boom!” What a great fight for two quality fighters, a great fight for Channel 5’s TV ratings and most of all a great night for the fight fans. Who said that professional boxing is a dying sport?

It’s time to dust off the running shoes and stretch out them muscles, as the Bradford City Runs are set to launch next month. Whether it is a half-marathon, 10k or 5k, runners are being urged to do something amazing this year and join in the runs to help create the biggest and best event yet. If you are looking to get fit or raise money for a noble cause, the day is a perfect opportunity for every person to accomplish that personal goal. Yasser Mohammed, 26, will be taking part in his first 5k when the races launch on Sunday 27th October. The run has acted as a catalyst for him to get fit again and hopefully raise some money. “I have only recently got back into fitness and viewed this run as a good challenge,” he said. “I am looking into raising some funds for Syria as well but nothing is certain yet.” Former Bradford Marathon winner and committed local athletics guru Tony Kingham will be the honorary starter for the 2013 Runs. The 68 year-old is looking forward to starting the race and then jumping off the starter's rostrum to perform as a veteran

on the four-lap Bradford City Runs half marathon. Tony was the winner of the second annual Bradford Marathon in 1983, posting a time of 2:32:08 around a very tough course starting at Apperley Bridge and taking in Shipley, Bradford city centre, Thornbury, Calverley, Horsforth, Rawdon, Baildon and Thackley. Meanwhile, this year’s course will be held on closed roads in the city centre, taking in the multi award-winning City Park. Over the past 30 years, the Bradford Grammar School
teacher has devoted much of his time to the development and support of local athletics. The Bingley Harrier member has been pivotal, along with his colleague Selby Brock, in running the Bradford Schools Athletics Association. He also acts as voluntary treasurer for Bradford Athletics Network. Tony said: “The City Runs event is a great opportunity for runners of all ages and standards to enjoy a range of events on closed roads right in the centre of Bradford. “It is very rare nowadays to get central roads clear of traffic for four hours, so it is hoped many people will come out and take part.” Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Environment, Sport and Sustainability, said: “It will be great to have Tony Kingham starting the Bradford City Runs for us as he is a great role model for all runners. “As a former Bradford Marathon winner he demonstrates great loyalty to local events and is looking forward to supporting the new Bradford City Runs.” Entry forms are still available from www.bradfordcityruns.co.uk where you can also find out more information about the big day.

Australian hockey coach, Terry Walsh, has been tipped to take over the reins of India’s national side after Michael Nobbs resigned earlier his year due to health problems. Walsh, a Silver medallist at the 1976 Montreal Games, is expected to demand a much higher salary than
his predecessor, with clearance required from the Sports Authority of India. With India virtually guaranteed a place in next year’s World Cup, in The Hague, the side are now in desperate need of a chief coach to guide them in the prestigious tournament. As head coach of the
Netherlands men's team, Walsh guided the Dutch to a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Classified as a Master Coach by the international hockey federation (FIH), Walsh previously served as head coach for the Australian men's team from 19972000.

BOOM! Galahad wins British Title with devastating knock out in close title fight
Sheffield’s fight favourite Barry Awad, aka Kid Galahad, as predicted, won in devastating fashion the British Super Bantam Weight Championship defeating English champion, Liverpool’s James ‘Jazza’ Dickens. The latest Asian fighter to win a major British championship.
Everything went to plan from the Kid rolling up to the Magna venue. To the warm up in the dressing room, to the ring entrance walk, to the ring and as Channel 5 would say “lights, camera, action”.
