FILM: Producer, Vashu Bhagnani, enjoyed his time in Bradford during the shooting of ‘Welcome to Karachi’

Bradford’s Bollywood shooting comes to a close

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

After two weeks of filming in Bradford, the ‘Welcome to Karachi’ crew are heading south to continue production in Birmingham and London. The Bollywood action-comedy,

expected to release in 2015, has had aspects filmed in local places from the Bradford Bazaar to Little Germany, whilst Lumb Hill Mills was even temporarily transformed into the Ukrainian Embassy earlier this week. Meanwhile, during the shooting more than 500 lucky Bradfordians in total were used as extras and will appear in the film upon its release. Of course, Bollywood stars such as Arshad Warsi will be taking centre stage in the production and can be seen speaking, running and even shooting guns in Bradford. Producer, Vashu Bhagnani, told the Asian Express he has enjoyed his time in the West Yorkshire city and thanked all the local people for their warm hospitality during the crew’s stay. “We were filming in Bradford last night in Thornbury for the final time before we move on with the shooting,” he said. “The city has been a beautiful place and we have been welcomed by everyone here so it has been a very good experience for me. “At the Bradford Bazaar we

filmed an action scene and the location was very good as well as the support from a lot of local people.” Explaining where the star-cast will head next, Mr Bhagnani added: “On Wednesday we go down to Birmingham for nine or ten days of filming before moving on to London to finish our filming in England. “I filmed in London last year for my film ‘Humshakals’ and really

loved the place. A lot of the production for the film took place there so I look forward to going again. “As for Birmingham I have never actually been so it will be a whole new experience. What I do know is that, like Bradford, we will be using more than 500 locals to join in with the filming which will be a fun experience.” Welcome to Karachi sees Arshad Warsi and Jackky Bhagnani take on the role of two lost Indians, stuck in the dangerous city of Karachi. With political turmoil rife in the city, the duo have to fend for themselves with no money, no passports, no means of communication, and perhaps most importantly, no way of getting home.

Dumper prosecuted

A Leeds landlord has been prosecuted for using an unlicensed waste carrier who then fly tipped her rubbish. Nadia Shafaq of Middle Cross Street, Armley, was fined £185, ordered to pay £300 costs and a £20 victim surcharge taking the cost of her ‘cheap’ waste disposal to over £600. Ms Shafaq, a landlady in the Armley area, pled guilty on 1st October 2014 to paying two men in a van £100 to take waste from her property which she was clearing out getting ready for a new tenant. She failed to ensure they were authorised to carry waste at the time. The waste was then found dumped on a private lane in Bardsey the same day. Evidence in the waste led Leeds City Council Environmental Action Officers to the property in Armley. The landlord could not provide any details for the people who took the waste away or prove they were licensed carriers and so became liable to prosecution.

Numbers don’t lie

Leeds Museums and Galleries are once again proving to be a big hit with visitors, new figures have revealed. As part of a report recently published by VisitEngland which collated visitor numbers to attractions right across the UK in 2013, a number of Leeds Museums and Galleries sites feature in a top 20 list of the most visited free attractions in the Yorkshire & Humber. Leeds Art Gallery was ranked fourth in the table having attracted 453,088 visitors, while 321,529 people took in the delights of Leeds City Museum, which earning fifth place, saw a 19.8 per cent increase on the previous year. Also performing well was Kirkstall Abbey in 10th place, which saw a significant 42.2 per cent increase in visitor numbers, as 176, 284 people, enjoyed a range of events in the magical 12th century Cistercian ruins during 2013.

Get superfast broadband

Businesses across the Bradford district are being invited to find out more about how they can benefit from the Superfast broadband grants at a drop-in event at Victoria Hall, Saltaire, on 21st October. The government funded Superconnected Cities Broadband Voucher Scheme offers grants from £100 to £3,000 towards the costs of upgrading the superfast broadband connection for small to medium sized businesses (SME’s) in Leeds and Bradford. Ten broadband providers will be present at the breakfast event in Victoria Hall, Saltaire, from 8am to 11am, to give on-the-spot information to businesses about what is available in their area and a chance to compare costs of superfast broadband with different internet providers, in conjunction with the broadband voucher scheme. ‘Child of Courage’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A young fundraising enthusiast from Bradford was given even more reasons to celebrate earlier this week, after receiving a prestigious national accolade just days after he was nominated for a Yorkshire’s Children of Courage award. It has certainly been quite the year for 18-year-old Mohammed Usman. From speaking to more than 12,000 people at a packed Wembley Stadium to travelling to India for volunteer work, the motivated teen says the experiences have ‘changed his life’. And now, following a recent fundraising project at his school, Mohammed has broken another record as he raised more than £1,300 for ‘Free the Children Charity’. The Grange Technology College student has been selling handcrafted Rafiki chains, made by Maasai in Kenya, at the school for six weeks and has seen the bands become somewhat of a craze amongst students and pupils. Following this project, Mohammed was nominated for the Children of Courage’s fundraising award by the aforementioned charity, for his ongoing work. Speaking about the awards, Mohammed said he was very proud to have received a nomination which was completely unexpected. “When I got told that I had been

The work I did in school with the Rafiki chains was not for this kind of recognition but to help those in need. “For me, the main focus of the project was helping raise funds for education. We are blessed to have the education we have here and I wanted to do something to help others.” Earlier this week, Mohammed was once again propelled into the spotlight for his volunteering efforts as he was told that he would be receiving the Diana Award. The only charity which bears the name of the late Princess Diana, the Diana Award recognises inspirational and socially active youths in society. Mohammed will receive his official accolade at an event in the capital in December as he continues his work with Free the Children. “These awards are a real honour to receive and they only motivate me more to continue with the volunteering efforts,” he said. “When I went to India, I could see for myself how different the situation is there compared to here. “Children walk one or two hours just to get to school whereas people here complain about waking up ten minutes early. “These experiences are lifechanging to see first-hand and I have to thank ‘Save the Children’ for allowing me to take part in some amazing events.”

Work on the streets, radiating out from the Westfield Broadway Centre development, continue to enhance the city centre environment in Bradford. Currently footways are being replaced with high quality paving and the street lighting is being improved in the areas of the Bolton Road and Forster Square junction and the Market Street and Kirkgate junction. Once this phase is completed the public realm works will continue to be carried out on all the streets adjacent to the Broadway Centre during the construction period. The works include new pedestrian crossings at Forster Square and Lower Kirkgate and the upgrade of existing crossings, highway drainage, landscaping with plants and trees, the installation of traffic signal poles and the installation of new street furniture such as benches, cycle racks and litter bins.

Don’t forget your flu jab

Kirklees Council, in partnership with health colleagues, is backing the annual flu vaccination campaign by urging at risk groups to get a flu jab. Women who are pregnant, children aged two, three and four years of age, front line health and social care staff, people (including children) under 65 with serious health conditions and people aged 65 are all eligible for a free flu vaccination. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people may see their GP and tens of thousands may be hospitalised because of flu. For most healthy people, flu is an unpleasant but usually self-limiting disease with recovery generally within a week. However, older people, the very young, women who are pregnant and those with some underlying diseases are at particular risk of severe illness if they catch flu. The best way for people to protect themselves and their family is to get the flu vaccine before flu starts circulating in the community.

Black history month exhibition

An array of stunning African clothes is the latest eye-catching attractions to go on display at Wakefield One Library and Museum this month. The Wakefield Council museum on Burton Street is celebrating Black History Month which runs throughout October, and highlights the history of black and ethnic people in the district. The display includes traditional dress from different African countries including clothing from Nigeria, the Gambia, Sierra Leone and Burundi, as well as artefacts from the museum's collection. The items have been brought together by Oshione Ekpeh of Wakefield based Afemai Children's Trust, and Alicja Szczapa of Wakefield English Language Project.

The ‘write’ way 12-year-old Takreem Ahmad and Taiba Summan Asghar, 16, both saw their short stories advance into the finals of the Young Muslim Writer’s Awards. The winner in each category will be announced at a special reception in London later this month with the winning authors set to be rewarded by seeing their creation published. Takreem, from Undercliffe, says he has always enjoyed reading books and is quite the academic, excelling in many subjects at school. The Year 8 Bradford Grammar School pupil decided to take part in the competition after reading a poster at school and spent more than three weeks crafting his tale for the Key Stage 2 Short Story prize. Explaining what his story, entitled ‘Folksaga’, was about, Takreem said: “It follows a child whose homeland has been devastated by fire so he set off, with his friend, to try and kill the dragon that caused all of this. “In the end, when they finally reach their destination, they find out that there are two dragons, not one as previously thought, so they did not know how they were going to kill it. “My hero decides to provoke the two dragons which causes them to fight each other and both of them are thought to be killed at the end but it is left on a cliff hanger. “Just as the heroes are about to head home, one of the dragons raises his head to show that he might be alive.” The avid writer says his idol is Roald Dahl yet took his latest inspiration from Cressida Cowell’s ‘How to Train your Dragon’ series of books. After sending off his entry,

Takreem was eventually alerted to his final nomination by a letter in the post which came as a big surprise for the youngster. “When I opened the letter and was told that I had been shortlisted I was quite surprised,” he said. “I am looking forward to going to London

now with my family and hopefully see my book published.” Takreem’s father, Mohammed Anwar Nadeem, said his son’s writing ability had not come from him yet was extremely proud of his achievements. “He has always been very good at

everything he has done, in school and in his religion,” he said. “I think he must get it from my brother, who is a teacher back in Pakistan, or my wife who enjoys reading but I have never been a writer. “It does make me proud to see him invited to London and we will all be there to support him.” Elsewhere, Taiba, from Allerton, was shortlisted in the Key Stage 4 Short Story category for her story, titled ‘The Price’. Based around a young girl who is diagnosed with a brain tumour, she is bitten by her friend, who is a vampire, in an attempt to save her life. Quoting urban fantasy writer, Maggie Stiefvater, as her idol, Taiba explained how she got involved with the competition and the shock she had when she made the final. “I had never entered anything like this before but after an author came into school and talked to us about the number of setbacks she had experienced, I thought I would give it a go,” she said. “When I received an email telling me I had made the final I screamed and my mum ran downstairs to see what had happened. “I was so excited to see I had been shortlisted and especially because it was my first attempt.” The Muslim Writers Awards is a non-profit organisation based in London, which seeks to nurture literary creativity within the Muslim community. As well as encouraging young Muslims to write and pursue professions which employ such skills, an annual competition is held in which submissions are taken from young Muslims from 5 to 16 years of age.

Qurbani for ALL

Spreading the message of Eid to hungry families

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford charity, which has prided itself on feeding those less fortunate since setting up less than two years ago, brought Eid to homes across the city last weekend with a special ‘Qurbani collection’. The InTouch Foundation handed out a total of 63 family bags of meat to residents across Bradford in an attempt to give every person the chance to celebrate the Muslim holiday. Through donations brought in to

the charity, which ranged from a third of a Qurbani, to a whole sheep, a vast quantity was collected and handed out on Sunday 5th October. Uncooked rice and chicken was also brought to the collection site before it was distributed across the city. Families from a range of Syrian, Somali and Iraqi backgrounds to name a few, benefited from the program which was completely run by volunteers from the charity, in association with Horton Housing and Islam Bradford. Osman Gondal, founder and board member of the InTouch

Foundation, said he was impressed with the efforts of all the volunteers and planned on expanding the scheme to a much bigger extent in 2015. “Next year we hope to take the event onto a national scale and bring food and Qurbani to people all across the country,” he said. “This year was only a pilot scheme yet the success of it showed how much of a difference we can make by getting food out to those most in need at this time of year. “InTouch provided that missing link for people’s Eid by bringing the Qurbani directly to them.”

Mr Gondal added his thanks to all the people who had given up time during their own Eid celebrations to help out with the project. He said: “Everyone here went away with a smile, knowing they had helped another family this Eid and I just want to thank everyone involved, from those who donated the food to the people who helped pack and distribute the goods on their Eid.” FOOD: The families received their bags from the InTouch team on Sunday just in time for their Eid celebrations

Muslims celebrate annual holiday with wider community

Eid gift giving

DONATIONS: Kumon Y’all Girls headed down to Dewsbury Hospital with armloads of gifts to be given out to those spending Eid in care

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

As people around the world enjoyed their Eid celebrations last weekend, Muslim groups from West Yorkshire showed their generous side by donating time and gifts to those less fortunate. Members of the Bradford-based Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) and Dewsbury’s Kumon Y’all visited their local hospitals with presents for youths who were spending time on the children’s wards. Firstly, on Friday 6th October, NADA representatives headed down to the Bradford Royal infirmary’s Children’s Ward 17 to distribute 35 Eid gifts. From soft cuddly toys, to books

and games, there was something for children of all ages, both boys and girls, with each present purchased by members of NADA. Nazim Ali, secretary at NADA, explained why the project was so close to his heart, having spent time in the ward himself as a child, and how important it was to celebrate this time of year with the wider society. “Eid is a joyous occasion for the 1.5billion Muslims around the world however, it is also a period where we should take a step back and reflect on all the blessings in our lives,” he said. “Eid is also a period of sharing and caring for the most vulnerable in society and our humble aim now is to make this initiative an annual event. “When we presented the gifts to the children they were beaming with smiles which were priceless to see. In turn their infectious happiness rubbed off on us and this was most certainly the best Eid gift for us.” Meanwhile, on Sunday 5th October, girls from the Kumon Y’all team continued the giving spirit as they paid a

visit to Dewsbury Hospital’s Children’s Assessment Unit and the A&E department. Another bundle of gifts were warmly received by patients and families who had to spend time at the hospital during the Islamic holiday. Regardless of the patient’s faith, every person was catered for and Kumon Y’all representative, Farook Yunus, said it was a great way of bringing different communities closer together. “With the conclusion of Hajj, Muslims across the globe are celebrating Eid alAdha; praying, feasting and having fun with friends and family,” he said. “Kumon Y’all Girls, winners of the West Yorkshire Police i13 competition, have continued to diligently work on cohesion projects during this time, building friendships, creating social awareness, and bridging gaps between communities. “We know that every child wants a present on Eid, so the Kumon Y’all Girls decided to share Eid, not only with their friends, family and neighbours, but their wider community too.”

THANKFUL: Families of all faiths warmly receive gifts in Dewsbury from the Kumon Y’all team

GIVING: For the second year in a row, members of Bradford’s NADA group, visited the BRI to hand over gifts

Savile ‘raped girl, 15, in flat’ Jimmy Savile raped a 15-year-old girl with another DJ who told her "you should be thanking us", a court has heard. Former Radio Caroline DJ Ray Teret took the naive teenager to a flat in the Manchester area in a bubble car in the early 1960s and she "couldn't believe it" when she found Savile was there, a jury was told. But Teret's trial in the city was told how Savile then raped the girl followed immediately by Teret. Prosecutor Tim Evans said Teret then told her: "You should be thanking us because we have made it easier for when the next person goes there." Opening the case against Teret, Mr Evans said the girl met the defendant in a club and took her to a flat where he was delivering some "fancy boots" to Savile. He said: "She couldn't believe it when she saw Jimmy Savile, who was famous even then, in the flat and couldn't wait to tell her friends who she'd met." The prosecutor said: "She was offered a drink a Lucozade - and asked to sit down. "She sat down on the bed in the flat. Savile came and sat next to her. He told her she had lovely hair and began to stroke it." Mr Evans said the girl began to tell her about how she straightened her hair but "she didn't get the chance". He said: "Savile put his hands up her skirt, pulled her knickers down, pushed her down on the bed. "She said 'what are you doing' and will tell you she didn't know anything about sex. "Savile raped her." The prosecutor said the girl will tell the jury it was "hurting and hurting and hurting" and, all the time, she was thinking "why isn't Ray stopping this?" But Mr Evans said Teret did not stop Savile because he was to rape her immediately after.

in 2015. The open auditions will be visiting more cities than ever before with 11 locations across the UK and Ireland (full details below). The show is open to any performer of any age, from any background, with any talent - all they need is a skill and star quality which they think will impress. Anything goes from comedians to contortionists, dancers to drag acts and acrobats to animals. Aspiring stars can attend auditions between 11.00am – 6.00pm at Headingley Cricket Ground, Headingley, Leeds, LS6 3DP. For more information and to apply: www.itv.com/talent

"Teret came across to her. He pushed her back on the bed and he too forced himself on her," he said. Mr Evans said: "What she will tell you has a familiar feel to it with this unhappy twist. "As well as Mr Teret raping a girl who had no idea about sex, she will tell you Jimmy Savile did too. "You may think that, in effect, she was produced to Savile for that purpose." Mr Evans told Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court: "During some of the evidence you will hear the name Jimmy Savile mentioned and count four requires you to directly consider evidence relating to a sexual offence the Crown says was perpetrated both by Jimmy Savile and Ray Teret acting together." Teret, 72, went on trial today along with two other men - Willliam Harper and Alan Ledger - accused of sex offences against girls dating back as far as 1962. Teret, of Altrincham, Greater Manchester, is charged with 18 rapes along with other offences. There are 17 different girls, all now grown-up, named in the charges. Mr Evans told the court that Teret had a "deal of celebrity" in the 60s and 70s, especially in the Manchester area. He said he worked at the pirate station Radio Caroline and Piccadilly Radio. The prosecutor said: "The Crown's case in a nutshell is that he used the celebrity that he had to abuse young girls in various ways and that the other two defendants - Mr Ledger and Mr Harper friends and associates of Teret - also became involved on occasions." Mr Evans told the jurors that they could not have failed to have seen the publicity about Savile's conduct. He said they were not tasked with determining the scale of Savile's abuse. The prosecutor said the defendants should not be contaminated "because of the spectre of Savile". He added: "This is not guilt by association and that sort of notion plays no part in this trial." Mr Evans also said "so-called celebrity trials" had no bearing on this case.

Shabana Azmi speaks with Asian Express FAMOUS: Shabana Azmi has appeared in dozens of films throughout her illustrious career and plays the role of Tejpal in Happy Birthday Sunita

Indian film legend welcomed to Leeds managed to convert, what was a largely British Asian community that only looked at Bollywood cinema, to actually becoming a theatre-going audience by writing stories about them and their lives. When they go to western plays it doesn’t resonate but here, Rifco Arts have managed to create a whole new audience which was very exciting for me.

Panna Fragola

Q) How are you finding touring the UK? A) I have done a play before at the National, called the Waiting Room, but I didn’t tour with it so this is the first time. It is very nice because all my costars, no matter which one, are people I have a very happy relationship with.

In keeping with the Tubzee tradition of developing gelato with flair and creativity, our Panna Fragola is a divine choice that is perfect for sharing with friends and family. Its smooth texture that is complemented with fresh strawberry pieces and swirled with real strawberry fruit sauce makes this an irresistible favourite. By Ashley Grint

“Tubzee’s vision is to make Gelato Giovanni, the most prominent Italian ice cream brand in the UK”

Q) Tell me about the play A) Happy Birthday Sunita is a play about a family that comes together to celebrate the 40th birthday of the daughter of the house who is still unmarried and living with the mother, Tejpal – who is the character that I am playing. You discover that actually it is a dysfunctional family and all the members are wearing masks in a sense and pretending to be something which they are not. Then Tejpal, who is the matriarch of the family because her husband has gone to India, announces that she has had enough of role playing and she’s done with duty and responsibility and will now follow her heart. This comes as a huge shock to the family because they have only ever seen her as ‘mum’ and never as a person in her own right. That in turn acts a catalyst of change for all the other members who drop their pretences and start living the dream which they had. The simple heart warming

Q) What about writing? A) Well my husband is a writer and he is a very good writer actually. The entire family is in the business really. My brother is a cameraman, my sister is an actress, my mother is an actress, my father was a writer, both my children are directors and their son is an actor. So there is plenty of talent in the family to take care of that.

Q) How do you view the standard of the current Bollywood industry? A) I think it is improving a great deal and that within mainstream cinema there has been a lot of change. Earlier, we used to do 12 films at a time but obviously you can’t do them justice because you couldn’t give any time to develop a part – it was enough to just say your lines and that was it. Today now, even within the mainstream cinema, actors are demanding much more of themselves, directors are demanding much more of Q) How is it different for you to appear in everyone and all kinds of films are film and theatre? being made in India for all ages A) I think it is very similar for and for all sections of society so it everybody in that you essentially is a very happy time to be find the character in the same involved. process except that in theatre, due to the long rehearsal process you Q) How has the role of women changed? get compared to film, you get to A) Of course there have been discover it more organically. huge changes. A team of willing volunteers were welcomed into Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice earlier this week as part of the annual Sewa Day on Sunday 5th October. Sewa is a universal concept, which involves performing an act of kindness without expectation of reward, performed selflessly and without ulterior motive. As a concept, Sewa is embedded in Indian traditions, and is actively promoted by different cultures and faiths. This year, Sewa volunteers in West Yorkshire did their part to give something back to the community, by giving up their own time to support the local Marie Curie Hospice. Jajnikant Parmar was one of the individuals who headed down to the charity on Sunday to help in whatever way he could. Speaking before the trip, he said: “It is our privilege for the Sewa Day volunteers to support Marie Curie Cancer Care in Bradford this year.” Community Fundraiser for Bradford, Calderdale and Craven, Helen Rowlands, added her thanks to those involved with the efforts. She said: “We rely on volunteers to help in all areas of the hospice so that we can continue to offer our vital services free of charge, as well as raise the profile of Marie Curie Cancer Care in the community. “We really appreciate the support of the Sewa Day volunteers.” The Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford, provides free expert care and support to ensure people with cancer and other illnesses, as well as their families, receive the best

possible quality of life. It costs more than £3.5million a year to run the site with donations allowing the doors to remain open throughout the year. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Helen on 01274 337 034.

More than 100 teenagers from the Wakefield area were praised as good citizens at a special graduation ceremony to recognise their hard work. The young people, aged 16 to 17, all successfully completed a four week National Citizen Service programme, run by Wakefield Council, and were presented with their certificates at Major Hall last month. The Government-led initiative brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps them to develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility, by working on skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication. Each person developed a social action project to deal with a local issue that they were passionate about, and spent 30 hours putting the project into action in their community.

Illustrations brought to life

A popular children's book illustrator is detailing his work at a new free exhibition in Ilkley. David Roberts, best known as the creator of The Troll and Tyrannosarus Drip with Julian Donaldson, will exhibit his work at the Manor House Art Gallery and Museum in Ilkley from Saturday 20th September until Sunday 23rd November. Dinosaurs, Trolls and Dunderheads will show how David Roberts moves his initial ideas into designs and finally into well loved characters. His most recent works include 'Iggy Peck, Architect' by Andrea Beaty, 'The Troll' by Julia Donaldson and 'The Dunderheads' by Paul Fleischman, which was shortlisted for the 2010 Kate Greenaway Award. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Squash and a Squeeze: Sharing Stories with Julia Donaldson at Cartwright Hall which is on until Sunday 9th November.

Time to think business

A pioneering education initiative that brings business and education partners together has been short listed for a national award. Industrial Centres of Excellence, or ICE, are a unique and innovative way in which the Bradford District is providing education for young people aged 14 and 19. ICE work by building strong and lasting partnerships between employers and schools, colleges and universities. They do this so that the skills young people develop match those that employer’s need. This partnership approach to education has been recognised by Children and Young People Now, who have short listed ICE for their Partnership Working award. Children and Young People Now is the only dedicated magazine for professionals working with children, young people and families. The award, which is now in its ninth year, is being judged by groups of adults and young people.

Party at the

Plaza Chan Raat celebrations welcome in Eid By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

As families around the world celebrated their Chand Raat festivities, people in Bradford headed down for some late night shopping to welcome in Eid in style. Bradford Plaza was the place to be on Thursday 2nd October as a party atmosphere was brought to the city. Whether it was some last minute clothes shopping, decorative mehndi or just some entertainment for the children there was something for everyone to enjoy. Almost 3,000 people attended the event throughout the seven hours of opening, with traders operating until 1am to welcome in customers throughout the night. Zahid Iqbal, Bradford Plaza owner, said this year’s Chand Raat had proven to be even more successful than he

could have imagined following on from last year’s event. He said: “This is the second year we have held this event and it has been a huge success. “It is a way of saying thank you to our customers, by laying on this evening of shopping for all the Eid essentials as well as a host of entertainment for children. “The mehndi proved very popular with guests on the night in preparation for the following day.” Mr Iqbal continued by thanking those involved with the night’s festivities. “We owe a huge thank you to our good neighbours Morrison’s, for allowing us to use their car park, whilst our thanks also go to the customers and traders for coming down,” he said. “This was all about bringing the community together before Eid celebrations get underway and that is exactly what we have done.”

The Chand Raat celebrations proved so popular that an identical event was held the following day to ensure those who had missed out on the first event were not left disappointed. Mr Iqbal says he already plans to host a similar project next year and despite thousands turning out this year, it is already being planned to be bigger and better than ever.

Kirklees College, in partnership with Skypeople, are now offering a professional qualification for airline cabin crew. The company will be running Cabin Crew Initial Training Courses using the travel and tourism facilities at the college’s Huddersfield Centre – including the aircraft cabin and check-in desk. The course is the only one of its kind currently offered by a UK college and is a real legislated qualification, in accordance with the European Air Safety Agency (EASA) and as approved by the Civil Aviation Authority. The course offers all the stages of the Cabin Crew Attestation (CCA) with the training able to replace the first part of cabin crew training (the generic aspects) which would traditionally be delivered by the airlines. No previous qualifications are necessary - it is open to anyone over 18 interested in joining a Europeanbased airline as cabin crew. Head of training at Skypeople, Collette de Stowe, said: “Once they have passed the course, candidates will be ready to apply to the airline of their choice and take on their specific company training. “A lot of the smaller airlines can’t afford to put staff through the training so it is ideal for them to get applicants who have already passed it all. Doing this training is sure to put you one step ahead of the competition. “Kirklees College is the perfect

Pakistani Art in Yorkshire Unique exhibition set to be showcased in Batley By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Artists from Pakistan will see their work displayed alongside some of Batley School of Art’s most promising student’s as a special exhibition is displayed later this month. The event is the result of the

dream and hard work of local pharmacist, Mohammed Farooq Hussain, who wanted to bring the work of artists from Pakistan to the Wheelwright Centre in Birkdale Road, Dewsbury. The exhibition will feature the work of graduate artists from the National College of Arts in Lahore; work by fashion graduates from the Pakistan Institute of Fashion

Design, as well as art and textile graduates from Punjab University of College and Design. Mr Hussain said: “Visual art forms - painting, photography, textiles and fashion all tell their own story of the heart, the soul, and the mind, of time and of place almost better than any other form of communication known to man. “It is this unique power we wish

to harness in the exhibition, to break down the cultural, social, religious, language barriers that might exist in our local communities engendering better understanding better communication and bringing people together.” Mr Hussain added that it was an ambition of his to see more young Pakistani students pursue a career in the arts and show that there is more

to the country than what is portrayed in the media. “Pakistan is much more than just fundamentalism and extremism which is all too often broadcast on our television screens,” he said. “This exhibition will allow people from all cultures to look at what Pakistan has to offer in a wide range of fields.” This is the first time Batley School of Art has hosted such an event for external artists and it will complement the work carried out by current students studying at Kirklees College. The work displayed at the exhibition will explore the culture, heritage, people and religion through a series of insightful expressions and musings captured in breath-taking brushstrokes, colours, photographs and fashion. Head of creative industries at Kirklees College Karen Matula said: “This is a new and exciting venture for Kirklees College and Batley School of Art. We are looking forward to opening our doors to the community to come and see an exciting range of art work and fashion from students and artists based in Pakistan. “Mr Hussain wanted to do something different and we are delighted to be able to host this exhibition to fulfil his dream and develop closer links as a result.” The exhibition, which is free to visit, will be held on Saturday 18th October from 10.30am until 6pm and Sunday 19th October between 11am and 3pm.

“This exhibition will allow people from all cultures to look at what Pakistan has to offer in a wide range of fields.”

NHS bosses threw pens at ‘incompetent, underperforming, useless’ hospital staff Hospital staff were called “incompetent, underperforming, useless and dopey”, pushed and prodded, and had pens thrown at them, an investigation into bullying has revealed. Shouting at colleagues in front of patients at the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust was the “norm”, and the belief was that the bullying came from the top, the report by conciliation service Acas found. Acas, which conducted interviews with 97 staff members, was called in after a critical report by CQC inspectors, highlighting the bullying claims and staff shortages at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, earlier this year. During interviews many were in tears and some said they had been emotionally damaged by the experience “and were no longer the same people as they were before”. Many had had to take “significant” time off sick, leave or take lower grade jobs “to escape”, with many saying they had been in tears at work and home and “dreaded” coming into work. Those who complained were often victimised and interviewees complained of managers hand-picking friends to conduct investigations to get the result they wanted, or being told by senior managers to raise their concerns with the very managers who were doing the bullying. Examples of bullying included consultants being threatened with the sack if

they didn’t work on Saturdays and those who were not in an “in group” in the cliquey environment of the hospitals being given the worst shifts, moved around a lot deliberately and being excluded from meetings and social events. The report said: “Many staff talked of feeling intimidated into not pursuing complaints and there was a strong belief this message came from the very top, with senior staff being seen as supportive of bullies and the bullying culture.” It concluded: “There was an overwhelming feeling that only major changes at the top would lead to a real cultural shift.” Some staff were too frightened to attend the interviews - even on the telephone “for fear they would be identified.” The Yorkshire Post revealed at the weekend that former chief executive Phil Morley, who quit his post in Hull in the spring just before the report was published, was handed an extra £10,000 in basic pay in 2013-14, taking his salary to £195,000-£200,000. Staff are being briefed today about the report and an action plan which includes mandatory training for all about acceptable behaviour and the creation of a support service and hotline number for staff to report concerns anonymously. The hospital trust has said disciplinary action is an option and will not shy away from probing cases where investigations find a

clear case to answer. But health union Unison has said bullies who are still in the organisation need to go before real progress can be made. Chief executive Christopher Long, who took over last week, said: “I have a very clear message to our workforce: bullying, intimidation, harassment and other such behaviours will simply not be tolerated. “The Acas report makes uncomfortable reading at times, but I am very much focused on making the issues it raises a thing of the past. Together with our staff side representatives, we will be working to ensure our staff feel safe at work and that everyone understands the behaviours we expect of them. Furthermore, if anyone who works for us experiences any negative behaviours going forward, we want them to know exactly how to report them and have confidence that action will be taken to address their issues.” But he stressed that the “vast majority” of staff didn’t experience bullying. Paul Credland, Staff Side Chair of the Joint Negotiating and Consultation Committee, which represents a number of unions working alongside the Trust, said bullying has increased because of a “target driven culture and poor management skills.” He said he welcomed Mr Long’s response, adding: “I look forward to working in partnership in the AntiBullying Group to address the issues raised by the ACAS report.”

White Widow working with IS?

British militant could be behind beheading attacks One of the world’s most wanted women is believed to be working alongside the Islamic State, sources have claimed, helping militants with their propaganda campaign. Samantha Lewthwaite, originally from Banbridge, was the wife of infamous 7/7 bomber Jermaine Lindsay, from Huddersfield, and has reportedly been working with the Islamist militant group since earlier this year. Nicknamed the ‘White Widow’, she is believed to have become one of the most influential female members of the group and one of the person’s responsible for the beheading videos of Steven Sotloff, James Foley and David Haines. According to the Daily Star, intelligence sources have claimed that Lewthwaite has risen to such a position of power that she is often regarded to as the ‘Special One’ or ‘Important Woman’. Her role, as well as leading on propaganda, is believed to also involve training and mentoring British and other white converts to Islam who have volunteered to fight

‘Trojan Hoax’ Birmingham teacher speaks out about school’s extremism probe

A teacher from one of the schools that was under the spotlight during the ‘Trojan Horse’ investigation has broken his silence. Speaking exclusively to the Asian Express, Inam Anwar, who has worked at a school for over five years as a Head of department, was shocked to hear that his school was

being investigated for extremism. Mr Anwar, a senior member of staff at the school which received an outstanding mark last year by Ofsted, says he believes it was all a ‘premeditated’ plan to publically undermine the school, its students and its staff.

Agenda Unprecedented visits

spotlight. “Pupils felt their religion, identity was being targeted and the line of questioning made them feel uncomfortable. “This was the worst time they could have chosen as it was exam time for students. This has affected their mental and emotional state and probably has left an impact on their futures in more ways than we can imagine,” he says.

The unannounced visits by Ofsted at the Birmingham-based school placed it under immense pressure earlier this year and at a time when students were preparing to take their GCSE and A Level exams. Mr Anwar, who has previously been through numerous Ofsted inspections, was sceptical from the onset of the ones that took place at this establishment. With four inspections taking place in a duration of just three weeks, Mr Anwar states that an investigation such as this one was unprecedented. “I’ve worked in various schools for over 12 years whose intake has been mixed,” he says. “This school was in Alum Rock, making it predominantly Muslim. It was disturbingly clear that they weren’t here to look at our teaching and learning. There was definitely an agenda sensed”. “Ofsted said they would be back later but came back sooner than expected, unannounced. They checked rooms, books and attended our meetings. There was no official report released about findings which led media to comment on matters which had not been verified,” said a concerned Mr. Anwar

Defining ‘Extremism’ Education Secretary at the time Michael Gove brought in former counter-terrorism police chief, Peter Clarke, a man with no known expertise in education to investigate. Like many political campaigners, Mr Anwar has had reservations with how buzzwords like ‘extremism’ have been and continue to be thrown about as a wide net to ‘catch out’ something. “There’s a lot of subjectivity with the Government definition of extremism. Anybody who speaks out against injustice is considered extreme. Define extremism?” argues Mr. Anwar. “There has been no explanation from Michael Gove or Sir Michael Wilshaw (Chief Inspector of Schools In England and head of Ofsted since January 2012). “The current Ofsted report mentions nothing about extremism. All it said was that the school doesn’t prepare children well to tackle issues of extremism. Does that make the school unsatisfactory?”

Character assassination

Unusual Line of questioning Mr Anwar was stunned to see what Ofsted was asking children at the school raising serious concerns on the impartiality of the visit. “Safeguarding, achievement, leadership which is what Ofsted usually come to inspect wasn’t even discussed. Instead there was a fixation on discussions with staff and students about homosexuality.” highlights Mr Anwar. “They asked students ‘Are you forced to hijab?’, ‘Do you (girls) feel hot in

the long skirt?’, ‘What would you do if your teacher was homophobic?’. The questions posed were very leading. We felt we were being targeted,” argues Mr. Anwar

Pressure on Students With a media circus carrying on outside the school premises, students in particular have had to deal with the difficulties of being under the

The entire saga has also led the senior teacher to be maligned in national press. A mainstream newspaper, which described Inam Anwar as “a heavily bearded” and “deeply religious person” says he’s responsible for “brainwashing” children at the school. Journalists managed to access his Facebook profile and quote his Status Updates. “It was deeply unsettling to see how a daily national newspaper reported and undermined my name. Since when was it a crime to quote the Quran and to speak for justice and equality?” questions Mr. Anwar.

SUPPORT: Tafazal Mohammad, from the Building Bridges project, will be helping to co-ordinate the event at the Hamara Centre, aimed at raising awareness of hate crime

On Thursday 16th October, a special event will be held at the Leeds-based Hamara Centre where stalls and support will be on offer in accordance with National Hate Crime Awareness Week. The purpose of the seven-day campaign is to tackle local hate crime issues by raising awareness of what hate crime is and how to respond to it, encourage reporting, and promote local support services and resources. A number of stalls which provide citywide support services and resources across Leeds will be present at the Hamara Centre where people are free to call in between 10am and 1pm. Local authorities, from the police and council amongst others, will be working in partnership with local groups and community organisations across the UK in the week leading up to the International Day of Hope and Remembrance for those affected by Hate Crime. Tafazal Mohammad, Coordinator for the Building Bridges project said: “National Hate Crime Awareness Week is

an opportunity for our project to invite members of the public to learn about hate crime, in all its forms, and give a strong message that it is something that should never be tolerated." Official statistics show that more than 740 hate incidents were reported in Leeds in 2012/13. Of those, 629 were linked to race, 13 to religion, 78 to sexual orientation, 44 to disability and three affecting gender identity. The event will also have other external projects that are tackling hate crime. “Our event is encouraging other projects that are working to tackle hate crime to come forward and hold a stall at the event,” Mr Mohammad said. “Hopefully, this will lead to a greater collaboration between projects and increase our collective capacity to deal with hate crime across Leeds.” Confirmed attendees include: Police Hate Crime Coordinator, Stop Hate UK, Victim Support, HALO (disability project), Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Unit and Building Bridges.

Hindu community celebrates annual festival

Happy Navratri The ten-day, nine-night celebration of Navratri finally arrived at the end of last month centred on the worship of the Hindu deity, Durga. A time which is celebrated by those of the Hindu faith, the festivities often revolve around high-spirited activities including prayer, music and dancing amongst men and women. In Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, the Indian community came together earlier this week to use the festival as a way of giving something back to the those most in need. In memory of Dad’ A grandfather from Bradford was remembered in a loving, charitable manner last weekend as a special evening of entertainment and awareness campaigning was held in the city. 79-year-old Mohammed Sadiq was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 29 years ago and sadly passed away in January earlier this year. His daughters, Hifsa and Salma, witnessed the effects of the condition first hand and were determined to help carry on their father’s legacy in any way they could. Mr Sadiq was a long time supporter of the charity, Parkinson’s UK, right up until his death, taking part in clinical trials in an attempt to help others suffering from the same disease. Thus, on Saturday 20th September, around 140 people attended a special event, organised by Hifsa with the support of her older sister, at Bradford Grammar School. Guests were treated to dance acts, food and special prizes whilst also learning of the true effects of Parkinson’s disease and raising money for the national charity. In total, more than £3,000 was raised through the nights proceedings, something Hifsa says she is incredibly proud to

Daughters touching tribute to departed father have achieved. “The whole reason we were inspired to do this event was because of my Dad and his work with Parkinson’s UK,” she said. “He was ill but always wanted to help others and this night was a way of continuing that.” Explaining what the night entailed, she added: “The evening started off with a speaker from the local branch of Parkinson’s UK outlining the basics of the disease and the effect it has on a person and their families. “Then there were also guests talking about the advancements in treatments before the entertainment and food were brought out. “One really interesting part of the night was when one person demonstrated to the crowd what an exercise class was like for someone with the disease. “Something as simple as picking up a glass of water or clenching a fist can take a long time which I had seen first-hand.

“What was really good to hear was other people saying that they had not realised the condition could get that bad, so it showed the awareness campaign had worked.” Hifsa thanked all the people who came along on the day to make the event a bigger success than ever imagined, and also praised the efforts of her sister, Salma, for all her hard work. Maureen Leverington, Parkinson’s UK representative, attended on the night and thanked Hifsa for all her support. She said: “The ladies glam night was a huge success and a fantastic event with approximately 130 people in attendance. “Hifsa did a fantastic job of organising the event in memory of her father Mohammed Sadiq with all the money raised throughout going towards helping people with Parkinson’s and helping to fund research into the disease.”

On target Archery event raises hundreds for vulnerable refugees It wasn’t prayers and hymns which were seen at a Bradford church last week but rather bows and arrows as a special archery fundraiser event took place at the historic site. Members from the Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) engaged in the age-old sport at St Mary’s Magdalene Church in Manningham, raising funds for Syrian refugees. In total £300 was raised through the activities with a host of first-time archers showing their sharp eye in front of the targets. Nazim Ali, general secretary of NADA, said the day was a big success in helping to raise vital funds for those most in need and thanked everyone involved for their support. “We wanted to arrange fun teambuilding sessions and came across archery since it was one of the three sports alongside swimming and horse riding that was highly recommended by Prophet Muhammad (pbut),” he said. “We thought alongside having fun

Next month members from NADA will be putting the funds to use as they travel to the Turkish province of Hatay to deliver aid to Syrian refugees. Earlier this year, ‘Team NADA’ members raised over £5,000 for

orphans in south Asia and for the Minarets Project by running the Bradford 10K Run and the Keighley Big 10K Run’s in March 2014. The money was then delivered in person to orphanages in Azad Kashmir in April 2014.

Kids lead the way on 20-Mile trek

October 2014 - 1st Edition

Thousands raised for charity from ‘Poverty has no borders’ challenge

TWENTY: (above) Zakariya and Mariya Faisal raised hundreds of pounds during the 20-mile walk from Bradford to Keighley

A pair of youngsters from Bradford led the way for a group of 40 volunteers last weekend, as an exhausting walk was completed, raising funds for a local charity. Six-year-old Zakariya, and eight-year-old Mariya Faisal, completed the 20-mile trek between Bradford and Keighley as advocates for the InTouch Foundation. A tiresome day saw the group walk along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, setting off on their journey at around 9.30am, before finally arriving at their destination at 7.15pm. InTouch founder and board member, Osman Gondal, said he was delighted to see so many people get involved, especially the hard working youths. “Zakariya and Faisal were absolutely fantastic and completed the full 20 miles without any complaining,” he said. “Between them, they also raised around £390 which all goes towards the charity so we are very thankful for all their work.” Mr Gondal added that the presence of the children also acted as a motivation tool for fellow walkers to continue marching on throughout the 10hour challenge. “People were looking at them and thinking, if they can do it so can I, so they really were little motivators.” The children’s parents, Nadia Riaz and Faisal Pervaiz, said they were incredibly proud of the pair who ‘wouldn’t stop’ throughout the challenge. “They were singing and joking all the way around,” Nadia said. “We thought they might be able to complete ten miles at most but they just wouldn’t stop. “They just said ‘we want to help the poor people’ which was really touching to hear and motivated us all to continue.” In total, almost £5,000 was raised through the ‘Poverty has no borders’ walk on Sunday with donations coming in before, after and even during the event.

CHALLENGE: Wheelchair-bound Hamzah Nadeem, 14, completed 10 miles of the challenge with his older brother, Husnain, and 10-year-old sister Hafzah

Along the way, four rest points were allocated in Rodley, Apperley Bridge, Micklethwaite and finally Keighley where the InTouch van was on hand to provide light refreshments and beverages. During the rests, intrigued onlookers also joined the team for a drink or a bite to eat and spoke about the charity. Mr Gondal says that a number of people made donations to the cause at these moments, helping to take the final tally to an even higher amount. Praising all those who were involved, he added: “Overall it was a really successful day and

everybody who came along enjoyed themselves. “For me, being the founder of the charity, the day was a great achievement, seeing so many people come together for this one cause. “Since becoming a registered charity, we have had many more doors open for us and this next year is going to be a massive one for everyone involved with the charity.” On Tuesday evening, the InTouch team had even more reasons to celebrate after Mr Gondal was issued with the Special Recognition Award at the Incommunities Star Awards.

Future ‘ambassadors’ want more help As news of a project to see Bradford’s taxi drivers become better ‘ambassadors’ for the city was announced earlier this week, one local cabbie has told the Asian Express that the project should be more of a ‘two way street’. Mr Khalid, from Bradford, has been a taxi driver in the city for the past 25 years and says he has driven tens of thousands of people to their required destinations without ever receiving a complaint. However, upon announcement of the optional training being offered to his fellow professionals, the veteran driver says the scheme, titled CAB! (City Ambassadors Bradford) may be too much work. “We already work to a very good level and I have never even received a complaint,” he said. “What is happening now is that the council and other organisations are putting more responsibilities on us that we do not need or want. “If one person is to make a mistake in this job it is reflected on everybody but if someone does their job as it is supposed to be done, we are never commended or appreciated. “If the council want us to help the public more, they need to start helping the taxi drivers first.” The CAB! Scheme is set to be piloted this November with two training courses held at city centre tourist attractions. Both courses will include information about Bradford’s tourist attractions, Bradford’s

Cabbies request as city aims to make Bradford ‘more welcoming’

UNDECIDED: Mr Khalid has been a taxi driver in Bradford for more than two decades and wants to see more help from council officials before the CAB! Scheme is rolled out

history and Bradford’s regeneration plans as well as tips on improving customer service. Drivers who successfully complete the course will be able to wear a badge and display a sticker on their vehicle.

Organised and funded by networking and advocacy group, Bradford Breakthrough, the group represents 32 senior private and public sector leaders across the Bradford District. It is also supported by Bradford

Council’s Tourism and Hackney Carriage and Private Hire departments and by the founders of Positive Bradford, now disbanded but who first mooted the idea two years ago. Chief Executive of Bradford

Breakthrough, Colin Philpott, said taxi drivers often form the first impression for a visitor to any city and it was important to take advantage of this. “We have some great taxi drivers in Bradford but we hope to give our cabbies more confidence to be knowledgeable and positive about Bradford,” he said. “This will help make Bradford more welcoming for tourists and business visitors. It will also help boost business for cab drivers who can display the CAB! Badge.” Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Member for Executive Employment, Skills and Culture, added: “We are a welcoming city and we all know that first impressions really count. “I’m therefore pleased that Bradford Breakthrough is organising these training sessions. The district’s cab drivers are at the front line of our tourism offer as well as playing a valued role in relation to business.”

BRIDGE: 19 young people from the Manningham Youth Action Group joined in the charity ride from Selby to York

APPLAUDED: The Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Ian Gillies, and Sheriff of York, John Kenny, welcomed the group with open arms during a Sky Ride event the following day

Charity Cycle Challenge Youths get on their saddles for Palestine A group of cycling-mad youths from Bradford hopped on their bikes last weekend for a 50-mile bike ride as they looked to expand the legacy of the Tour de France. Young people from the Manningham Youth Action Group, aged between 10 and 19years-old, set off from their base in Selby en-route to the final destination of York, 16 miles away. Along a scenic journey, the group completed their challenging ride whilst also raising funds for

the children’s charity, Qaaf Aid, which works with those most vulnerable in areas including Palestine. The testing trek was conquered by 19 young cyclists in total who had initially planned on only completing the route one way. Yet, after staying at a youth Hostel in York overnight and subsequently taking part in the York Sky Ride the following day, the group decided to complete the cycle once again, all the way

home. In total, around 46 miles were covered and according to group leader, Sharat Hussain, it was a fantastic achievement. “The boys were really excited before we set off because the day had been planned for months,” he said. “After weeks of collecting sponsors we made our way to York and decided to join in with the Sky Ride the following day. “This was great, with everyone really enjoying themselves and we even got the chance to meet the Lord Mayor of York who was absolutely delighted to welcome a group from Bradford.” He added: “We had planned on packing the bikes up and getting

transport back but everyone was so enthusiastic that we ended up doing another 16 miles.” As part of the programme young people also gained skills in repairing old bikes, basic bike maintenance and learning how to ride safely in their community. Bicycles and equipment on the day were provided by Bradford Council Youth Service whilst several local businesses also got involved with the sponsoring of the event. “So far we have raised around £1,300,” Sharat said. “A big thank you goes out to all those friends and family members who sponsored us as well as Janan who were our main sponsor, donating up to £200.”

Bhangra in Huddersfield Research fellow explores Yorkshire’s Indian dance roots A first-time author from Huddersfield has delved deep into the roots of Bhangra dancing to uncover the town’s somewhat unknown historic relationship with the popular Punjabi dance. Hardeep Singh Sahota, who is a research fellow at the local university, published his book Bhangra: Mystics, Music and Migration, which explores the past, present and future tellings of the Indian art form. Hardeep has long had a passion for Bhangra, dancing since his childhood and most recently completing a Heritage Lottery Fund project named Bhangra Renaissance, probing the origins of the

form in India and how migrants brought it to Yorkshire towns. Alongside this, the academic has also completed his Masters degree in the same topic and set up a community group named VIRSA – a word meaning ‘heritage’ in the Panjabi language – and launched World Bhangra Day. Now, his new book pulls together all the strands of his research and traces the origins of Bhangra in the folk traditions and religious rituals of the Punjab. Explaining what the text will cover, Hardeep said: “My research into Bhangra started with my own feelings and passion for Bhangra dance.

“Growing up I always thought the hub of Bhangra was in Birmingham...but through some of the oral histories which we began to explore we found out that there was actually a Bhangra dance team back in 1968 here in Huddersfield.” As a boy growing up in Huddersfield, Hardeep says he was very close to his grandfather, Phuman Singh, who had come to the UK in the 1950s. He performed religious songs at the local Gurdwara as well as folk songs at weddings and was the lead singer for the 1970’s bhangra group Dewana Mastana. “He was primarily a singer, but my passion lay much more with dance,” Hardeep

added. “Since I was very little, every time there would be a family celebration I would be the first one dancing.” The book covers the evolution of the mysticism, music and dance of Bhangra on its home soil and in the UK, where cross-fertilisation with rock and hip-hop had a transformative effect. The contribution made by leading performers and innovators, such as Malkit Singh and A.S. Kang, is analysed in detail whilst visually, the book is packed with pictures, including original artwork and photographs from Sara Rizvi, Tim Smith and Zara Hussain.

“It is a natural, earthy dance with warrior rhythms that seduce the dancer and the audience. Bhangra is about being able to shed your inhibitions completely, to move to the music without any hesitation. Gesturing through Bhangra moves with fellow dancers inspires a connection with them, and for me, personally, the realisation of a connection to a higher spiritual plane.”

“ The After School Learning Club”

Happy 2nd Birthday! ne of Britain’s leading Ofsted registered afterschool clubs is celebrating its latest milestone this month as it continues to grow from strength to strength. Raising Explorers, based at the Carlisle Business Centre, has been a hub of energy for educating and entertaining youths across Bradford ever since it first opened its doors two years ago. On Friday 3rd October, a special birthday event was held onsite to celebrate the club’s second year anniversary and reflect upon the great strides made in such a short time frame. More than 120 children, aged between 5 and 15 currently attend the place of learning where they are able to utilise some excellent facilities, make new friends, and of course be taught by a team of fullyqualified, enthusiastic teachers. Within its first year of existence, Raising Explorers had already begun on its mission to raise the standard of afterschool childcare across Bradford. Becoming the first such club in the country to set up an affiliation with a university – the University of Bradford – only highlighted the ambition of those behind the scenes. The relationship between the two sites was actually an idea derived by the university alongside the Bradford Achievement Forum who approached Raising Explorers after hearing of the fantastic progress being made by the club. Since establishing the link, it has allowed Bradford’s top afterschool club to provide high quality teaching to 50 GCSE students with the aim of improving their grades by at least one level.

O

After all, making sure children achieve the best grades possible, always work to their full potential, has always been at the forefront of every decision made by the Raising Explorers team. Core subjects such as Maths, English and Science, have continued to take precedence whilst lessons in religious studies, such as: Arabic Tajweed, Arabic Language and Islamic studies are also available. Of course, there are also a number of separate activities which the club has been involved with throughout the past 24 months. From charity fundraisers, to outdoor adventures and trips to sites such as Lightwater Valley, there is always something new for the Raising Explorers children to get involved with. If you would like to find out more about the services offered at the afterschool club, contact Raising Explorers today and give your child the education they deserve.

A tangled web A

s part of the process of providing cosmetic treatments, clinicians may provide to their patients brochures produced by the manufacturers of products they are using. Where those brochures contain incorrect statements about the products, the clinicians themselves could face claims in misrepresentation where the brochures are provided without any disclaimer on their part. In the case of Webster & others –vLiddington & others, the Claimants were patients who had undergone treatment to rejuvenate their skin and the Defendants were the clinicians administering that treatment. The clinicians administered a product named Isolagen which rejuvenated human skin and restored a youthful appearance by using the patient’s own cells, rather than material taken from animals or other sources. The treatment was significantly more expensive that other available treatments, such as Botox or Bovine Collagen. The major selling point of the Isolagen was that it used only the patient’s cells and no extraneous material. It transpired that the treatment did in fact contain small traces of bovine material (between 0% and 0.02%). The Claimants alleged that the brochures containing details of the treatment had contained misrepresentations. The Defendants sought to argue that because the trace was so small, the content of the brochures was substantially true and in any event they were not responsible for the accuracy of the statements contained within the brochures. At first instance, the County Court had held that the Defendants were responsible for the statements in the brochures which they had provided as they had intended the Claimants to rely upon those statements, which they reasonably did. The Court took the view that the Defendants were seeking to

benefit from the manufacturer’s literature and were distributing it in order to assist the patient’s decision of whether to proceed with the treatment. The Defendants appealed. The Court of Appeal found that the presence of the bovine material was indeed a material matter. The representations in the brochures that the treatment used “only” the patient’s own cells were incorrect in a material respect. The Court took the view that had the patients been fully informed of the composition of the treatment, they may have chosen not to proceed. The extraneous material may have caused an allergic reaction in some patients and to others would simply be “offputting”. The Court found that there was a “stark imbalance of knowledge” between the parties given their relationship as clinician and patient, as well as seller and buyer. As there was no disclaimer about the accuracy of the information contained in the brochures, a reasonable person would conclude that the doctors had adopted and were therefore responsible for the statements made. Accordingly, the doctors were liable for misrepresentation as a result of providing to their prospective patients brochures prepared by manufacturers which contained materially untrue representations. By passing on the literature to the patients, the clinicians were adopting that information as their own. The decision in this case provides a salutary reminder that parties should ensure all information in publications which they pass on is accurate and does not contain misleading statements. We at Blacks deal with all aspect of clinical negligence claims as well as claims for misrepresentation. We also have a specialist Medical Practice Law Department which acts on behalf of general and other medical practitioners.

And of course the pick-up is free.” MK Motors also boasts the largest number of tyres for sale in the area, with more than 2,000 new, part worn, branded and budget models on site. Alan Henning memorial service held A special church service has been held for murdered British hostage Alan Henning in his home town on 5th October. His widow Barbara sat at the front and was joined by family and friends at the service of ‘reflection and solidarity’ at Eccles Parish Church in Salford, Greater

Manchester. People of all religions were invited to the service where music was played and candles were lit. The Church of England Diocese of Manchester said: “You are welcome to attend this service, whatever faith you have, or if you have no faith.

“It will be an opportunity for reflection and to show support for the Henning family at this tragic time.” The killing of Mr Henning, a 47year-old former taxi driver, has left the community of Eccles in shock. His widow Barbara has said his family and friends were ''numb

with grief'' after receiving the news that he had been murdered by his Islamic State captors. She thanked everyone who took part in campaigns and vigils at home and abroad for the aid worker's release but appealed for privacy after receiving ‘the news we hoped we would never hear’. A video showing the brutal murder of Mr Henning - who was kidnapped last December in Syria by IS militants - was posted on the internet by the group on Friday night. More than 500 people were thought to have attended the service. The Rt Revd Dr David Walker, the Bishop of Manchester, said Mr Henning died a martyr. “The Christian faith is centred around a man who did enormous good and who actually paid with his life for it," he told the BBC. “Alan stands in that fine tradition - since the time of Jesus Christ, we have a word martyrdom in the Christian faith for it - of those who do good and end up paying the ultimate sacrifice for it.” Prayers were also said for Mr Henning at Leeds Makkah Mosque on Sunday. fund has been set up by his friend and fellow aid worker Shameela Islam-Fulfiqar on the Go Fund Me platform with the aim of raising £20,000. Within a day of the campaign being started, more than £10,000 had been donated on Sunday night. The page says: “This page is dedicated to the memory of Alan Henning - Also known as ‘Gadget’ for his love of all things technical. On the 3rd October 2014, the world lost an honourable and remarkable hero. “Alan was a selfless compassionate man that paid the ultimate price - to help the destitute and poor that were less fortunate than him. “After seeking permission from Alan's widow Barbara, we have decided to set up a fund in memory of Alan for his children Adam and Lucy. “We want them to know that their father's death was not in vain and that the work that Alan was so committed to will also continue.” The money will also go towards a project to benefit the Syrian refugees Mr Henning was attempting to help when he was kidnapped by Islamic militants.

RELEASED Terror charges dropped after harrowing seven month prison ordeal for ex Guantanamo Bay prisoner

The former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg has been released from a south-east London jail, after a dramatic collapse of his case five days prior to his trial. He was arrested along with three others in February this year and faced a string of seven terror charges, all connected to the conflict in Syria and included an allegation that he attended a terrorist training camp there. Five days before Begg was due to go on trial, prosecutors announced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday that they had “recently become aware of relevant material” which obliged them to offer no evidence. The judge entered a formal verdict of not guilty on Wednesday 1st October and ordered that Begg be set free immediately from Belmarsh high security prison. Police sources said the decision was taken following the receipt of this intelligence material two months ago. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that had this information come to light at the time of charging, he would not have been detained in the first place. On being questioned by the press, the Home Office has said it was ‘inappropriate’ to comment on whether the information had been handed over by MI5. It said that the decision to halt the prosecution had been taken by the police and CPS directly.

Those counts related to electronic documents found on a laptop computer in his possession. He also denied attending a terrorist training camp, ‘knowing or believing instruction or training was provided there for the purposes of terrorism,’ between 9th October 2012 and 9th April 2013. He was also charged with funding terrorism by making available a Honda generator between 14th July and 26th July 2013. Begg had sat throughout the hearing at the time and said "not guilty" as each of the charges was read out. He has never previously been charged with an offence.

Guantanamo Bay

Mr Begg, a British citizen of Pakistani origin had moved to Afghanistan with his family in 2001, before moving again to Pakistan in 2002 when the Afghanistan war started. He was arrested in Islamabad in January 2002 and taken to Bagram internment centre in Afghanistan for about a year before being transferred to the US-run military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for nearly three years. During his detention he was interrogated by British as well as US intelligence officers. He was released in January 2005 with three other British citizens and returned to the UK.

Working with the Londonbased rights group Cage, Begg is a prominent campaigner on behalf of terrorism suspects who were being denied basic legal rights. 08703 608 606 Secret Service recruits dyslexic spies

Britain's main surveillance agency is employing over 100 people afflicted with dyslexia and dyspraxia as spies in the country's fight against terror. The Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), uses the ability of these ‘neuro-diverse’ spies to analyse complex information in a ‘dispassionate, logical and analytical’ way to combat threats. “Neuro-diverse individuals will be able to bring additional value to the full spectrum of roles and jobs across the department,” an official said. While dyslexics find it pretty difficult to read, write or interpret different words, they often have an extraordinary aptitude for deciphering facts from patterns or events. A famous person with the condition was Alan Turing, who during the Nazi onslaught in the WWII helped Britain break the enemy's top-secret code.

Slavery stats rise

The number of people locked in slavery in Britain rose by 22 per cent last year, with online dating, social media sites and Internet job advertisements used increasingly to recruit victims, a new report showed on Tuesday. Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) identified 2,744 people, including 602 children, as potential victims of human trafficking in 2013 with more than 40 per cent ending up in the sex trade and almost 30 per cent forced into manual labour. The third annual human trafficking report listed Romania as the most prevalent country of origin for victims for the third consecutive year, with more than half exploited for sex, and Poland as the most common country for labour trafficking. Although the number of victims of slavery in Britain is hard to pin down, studies have shown there has been an increase in human trafficking in recent years, prompting the government to prepare a bill to more effectively tackle slavery offences.

Tory backer heads to UKIP

A businessman who has given hundreds of thousands of pounds to Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party said on Wednesday he was switching his support to the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). The decision by Arron Banks, announced hours before Cameron delivers his last major conference speech to his party before a May 2015 national election, was designed to embarrass the British leader and persuade other Conservatives to follow suit. “I've supported the Conservatives for a number of years but have come to the realisation that only UKIP supports my views,” Banks said in a statement released by UKIP. “Being a member of the EU is like having a first class ticket on the Titanic,” he added, referring to the doomed ocean liner. “Economically, remaining in the EU is unsustainable.”

Schizophrenic Brit needs ‘security’ The family of an Edinburgh man, shot in a Pakistani prison earlier this year, say their relative needs more protection after it was reported he is set to return to prison. 70-year-old Mohammed Asghar was sentenced to death in January after being found guilty of blasphemy. The Brit, who suffers paranoid from schizophrenia, had written a number of letters to people claiming that he was the prophet Mohammed and was apparently shot in the back and injured by a prison guard last week. His long standing health problems have resulted in the legal action charity, Reprieve, calling for action to be taken to ensure Asghar is sent to a secure facility for medical treatment. Spokeswoman Maya Foa said to move Mr Asghar to a prison now would be to ‘effectively hand out a second death sentence’. “The British Government simply cannot

illness.” Family solicitor, Aamer Anwar, also urged First Minister Alex Salmond, and Prime Minister David Cameron to intervene and ensure his client is transferred back to the UK. Mr Anwar said: “The

Asghar family is horrified to learn that their father is being threatened with being returned to prison. Pakistani “The authorities are unable to guarantee Mr Asghar's security and we have insisted that he be moved to a secure military medical facility where he can continue to be treated in safety. “The repeated failure of Cameron to David intervene is a green light for the Pakistani authorities to continue punishing Mr When will Asghar. somebody in power act to save his life?” Asghar was initially arrested in 2010 in Rawalpindi after being accused of blasphemy by a tenant. It is alleged that his schizophrenia was not taken into account by authorities when he was charged with the offence earlier this year, and has since only been medicated with basic anti-depressants since his imprisonment.

Shot pensioner to be sent back to prison

13 years for rape of pensioner A man who raped a 71year-old woman in her Solihull home has been jailed for more than ten years after being caught by his DNA. Irshad Hussain was arrested just five days after the attack when forensic evidence at the scene matched his DNA, which had been recorded on the national database following a theft in 2003. The victim was at home on 28th October 2012 when Hussain knocked on her door and forced his way into her address. He then subjected her to a terrifying ordeal, pushing her upstairs where he conducted the assault. Police were called the following day and forensic examinations at the house found Hussain’s semen on the victim’s bed. A sample was sent off to the DNA database on 1st November and the next day, a match was made with Hussain, who was then arrested on suspicion of rape. During his trial, Hussain claimed he was innocent, making out the victim was keen on him and the sex was consensual. “In reality, nothing could be further from the truth,” said Detective Chief Inspector Dean Young

from the force’s Public Protection Unit, “From his work in the area as a traffic warden, he became aware of the woman and her vulnerabilities. “He then preyed on her and seized his opportunity to take advantage of her, abusing his position of trust in the community.” A jury at Birmingham Crown Court believed the victim’s account and found Hussain, aged 30 of Flavells Lane, South Yardley, guilty following a four-day trial. On Friday 25th September, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison, whilst Judge Paul Farrer also ordered Hussain to be placed on the sex offender’s register for life and the subject of licence conditions on release. Detective Chief Inspector Young added: “We are satisfied with the sentence handed to Hussain, which reflects the serious nature of this offence. “The victim has understandably been affected a great deal by what has happened. Her health has now deteriorated and she has lost her independence, becoming more reliant on family members as a

Beauty Top Tips Hey Guys!

Check out our tips on how to find what type of skin you have and the best Prity's facials for each skin type!

1) Dry Skin: If your skin has a strong tendency toward dehydration, lacks oil, and has few breakouts if any at all, it is considered dry. In more extreme cases, dry skin lacks elasticity and can be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures. Wash your face once a day with a rich, creamy cleanser and warm water. • Tip: Avoid toners and makeup that contain alcohol as alcohol-based products have a drying effect on skin. Use a cream-based lotion to hydrate your skin and keep it rejuvenated. Recommended Facial for this skin type: Spa Skin Polishing Facial £55 (1 hour) or £40 (45mins) 2) Oily Skin: If your skin is oily, it usually has a lot of shine to it very soon after cleansing and the pores are generally slightly enlarged. It is more prone to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads than other skin types and is coarser in texture. • Tip: Your skin tends to attract more dirt than dry skin, so wash your face twice a day with a gentle non-foaming cleanser and warm water. Although your skin's oily, you still must moisturize it with a light moisturizer daily, or your skin will become dry underneath and

3) Normal Skin: Some consider normal skin to be combination skin, but it is not. If your skin is oily in the "T zone" and your nose while dry and taut on the cheeks, it is considered normal. It's also considered normal if it changes with seasons (dryer in winter, oilier in summer). • Tip: Wipe an alcohol free, hydrating toner all over the face. Recommended Facial for this skin type: English Rose – Intense Glow Facial £45 (1 hour) or £35 (45mins) 4) Combination Skin: Combination skin is comprised of two extreme skin types on one face. These situations occur when there is acne and a lot of oil in one area when the rest of the skin is generally dry (no oil). • Tip: Use a combination of techniques on each area for example use dry skin tips on dry areas and oily skin tips on oily areas. Recommended Facial for this skin type: Milk & Honey Facial - £45 (1 hour) or £35 (45mins) 5) Sensitive Skin: Please note that you may have sensitive skin and normal, oily, or dry. If your skin has allergic reactions to beauty products and is usually sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold weather, it is sensitive. • Tip: Look for cleansers, toners, makeup, and moisturizers that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Recommended Facial for this skin type: 5 Fruits Facial - £45 (1 hour) or £35 (45mins)

Life savers wanted

Campaign for more registers launched by cancer survivor A police officer and Leukaemia survivor from Leicester united with young people from the city at the start of October in a fight against blood cancer. Father-of-two, Rik Basra, orchestrated a record breaking initiative which aimed to get 1,000 young people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan register in just one day. Rik’s own life was saved in 2011 when he received a bone marrow transplant from an anonymous donor in Germany, after the search for a donor stretched to an international level due to the lack of BME donors. He has since set up the Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign, working to increase understanding of the condition and promote sign-ups to stem cell registers. On 1st October, the city’s three major universities joined the project, alongside a host of major sports stars, to encourage local 16-30 year-olds to give a saliva sample. Prior to the event, Rik said he was hopeful of finding a host of future life savers. He explained: “We're very excited to be

signing up potential lifesavers at eight different locations in a single day. “It’s going to be a fun day with lots going on and plenty of entertainment, but most importantly, we want people take a few minutes out of their day to register with Anthony Nolan. “Every single person we sign up has the potential to save a life, I know only too well because someone did it for me.”

“It’s a pleasure to help the team recruit more lifesavers, what’s more important than that? It’s so easy to sign up, everyone should be doing it.” Leicestershire and England cricket legend Paul Nixon also showed his support adding: “It’s such a simple thing to sign up to the register, all you have to do is fill out a form, spit in a tube and the team at Anthony Nolan does the rest.

“It’s a pleasure to help the team recruit more lifesavers, what’s more important than that? It’s so easy to sign up, everyone should be doing it.” Some of Leicester's best-known sports stars also got involved to support the event with ex-Leicester, Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey in attendance. Heskey, who was born in Leicester, said: “When I was asked by Rik to help out, I just couldn’t say ‘no’.

“I hope Leicester gets behind Rik and his team and sign up in big numbers.” Blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan uses its register to match potential bone marrow donors to blood cancer patients in desperate need of a lifesaving transplant.

Tragic train suicide Mother and son killed after leaping in path of train

TRAGIC: The train struck Rubina and her son Amaar at Slough Station earlier this month, with no third party involvement suspected

STOPPED: The Renault Clio sped past officers before coming to a stop on top of a local man’s parked car

MOUNTED A teenager was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving earlier this week in Birmingham after flipping through a garden wall and coming to rest on top of a parked car. Officers on patrol in Shirley Road, Hall Green, just before 12.30am on Tuesday 30th September spotted a Renault Clio overtaking another car at high speed. It failed to stop for officers and moments later careered onto the driveway of a property in Olton Boulevard East before mounting the homeowner’s car with its

front wheels rammed through the windscreen. An 18-year-old local man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and dangerous driving; he remains in police custody at time of print.

Force Incident Manager, Chief Inspector Julian Harper, said: “The manner in which the car was being driven immediately caused concern…the car made off from police but seconds later clipped a kerb and smashed into a car parked on a driveway.

“The parked car suffered extensive damage and was also shunted backwards into the property, demolishing much of the porch area. It’s fortunate that the driver escaped largely unhurt and that no-one at the address was injured.”

A woman, who killed herself and ten-year-old child after jumping in front of a train last week, has been described as a ‘loving mother’ by family members. Rubina Khan, 46, and her son Amaar, 10, were both pronounced dead at Slough Station in Berkshire on 24th September, with Ms Khan reportedly depressed following the death of her partner. The pair had been hit by the 8.41am Bedwyn to London Paddington commuter service. A statement from the family issued through British Transport Police said the loss of the mother and son would have a big impact on the family’s life. “Rubina was a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister who will be sorely missed by all who knew her,” it read. “Amaar was a cute, gorgeous little boy, with a lovely cheeky side, and we will all miss him so much. “Their loss has left a huge hole in our lives and we are all struggling to come to terms with what has happened. We have, however, been comforted and humbled by the support of the community. “More than 1,000 people have been to see us to pay their respects, which really is testament to Rubina’s character as she was loved by one and all. This is an indescribably difficult time for the family and we

now ask to be given the space and time we need to grieve.” The shocked family were struggling to come to terms with the reality of the situation at the funeral the following day at the Jamia Masjid Islamic Centre in Slough where mourners gathered to show their respects. Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Gilmer described the incident as ‘very upsetting and distressing for the driver and anyone who witnessed it’. She said: “Officers were called to Slough railway station shortly before 9.45am following reports that two people had been struck by a train. “Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance also attended the incident and a woman and child were pronounced dead at the scene. “The incident is currently being treated as suspicious and our detectives have launched a full investigation. “But they do not believe there was any third-party involvement at the station. This is obviously a very tragic incident and our thoughts are very much with those affected. “The driver is incredibly shaken up by the incident and is being supported by ourselves and train operator First Great Western. He's going to have been traumatised by it.”

Daughter’s ‘Breaking Bad’ poison plot Attempted murder charge for wannabe ‘Walter White’

FAMILY TROUBLES: Kuntal Patel (right) is currently facing a charge of trying to murder her mother, Meena (left), by acquiring a biological agent or toxin and spiking her drink

A woman from East London has admitted she thought about killing her mother after spiking her diet coke in a murder plot inspired by the television show, Breaking Bad. 37-year-old Kuntal Patel has been appearing at Southwark Crown Court throughout the past month charged with putting the deadly poison, abrin, in her mother, Meena’s drink. After finding a partner on an Asian dating website, Patel says she fell in love for the first time and had planned to marry the man. However, the Barclays employee was forced to call off the wedding due to her mother’s constant disproval of the relationship and subsequently said she ‘hit rock bottom’. This caused Patel to allegedly consider suicide as well as killing her 60-yearold mother.

Admitting to the thoughts, Patel told jurors at Southwark Crown Court: “I was having thoughts about killing myself, and I have to tell you that I also had thoughts, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this, about killing my mother. “I know it’s a terrible thing and I feel ashamed for having those thoughts. I was in a really bad mental state of mind. I couldn’t cope. “I was researching these websites constantly to the point where I became obsessed with doing research on it. It was all I thought about.” The two family members lived together in their home in Plaistow, East London with another sister of Patel’s. After failing to ever find a boyfriend, Kuntal Patel said she felt like an ‘overweight buffalo’ and was unhappy with her looks. This made her turn her attention to an

She is alleged to have called Kakad a ‘fat, black b*****d’ and her daughter a ‘f****d-up-brain girl who can’t be my blood’ for falling for him. The mother then began beating her daughter, the court heard, before Patel purchased the abrin online. Peter Rowlands, defending, asked Patel how she would have felt if she had killed her mother. She replied: “I would be lost and I would be devastated and, to be honest, I probably would have ended up killing myself too. It was just thoughts I was having in my head.” Denying any charge of attempted murder, Patel said she bought the substance after becoming addicted to the American television series, Breaking Bad. In one episode, a character is killed with the poison ricin, which is a weaker substance than abrin. Doctor who forged prescriptions for Viagra struck off

REMOVED: Dr Mansoor Kassim who worked for Maidstone Hospital struck off after General Medical Council’s register after hearing in Manchester

A doctor who forged prescriptions for Viagra because he was too embarrassed to see his GP has been struck off. Dr Mansoor Kassim, 37, was given a suspended sentence in January after he admitted theft, fraud and forgery over the scam to obtain the drug, for erectile dysfunction, while working at a hospital in Wales. He was given a post at the Maidstone Hospital in February with his employers fully aware of his convictions. But on Friday he was removed from the General Medical Council’s register after a two-day hearing in Manchester, meaning he will no longer be able to practice in the UK. He told a Medical

Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) panel that he had made a “stupid mistake” and described the episode as a one-off. Kassim explained he had stolen the prescription pads to treat a medical condition of which he was too embarrassed to consult a GP. But the panel criticised him for trying to “minimise” the gravity of his behaviour and told Kassim, who was born in India, his background was no excuse. The thefts, which continued for eight months, came to light after prescription forms were found to be coming from the trauma and orthopaedic department. MPTS panel chairman Prof Michael Whitehouse told him: “The panel considered that

the premeditated, opportunistic and prolonged nature of your offences does amount to behaviour fundamentally incompatible with being a doctor. “You abused your position of trust at the earliest opportunity by stealing prescription forms a day after beginning your role.” Kassim admitted four charges of making a false prescription, two of theft by an employee and one of fraud at Newport Magistrates’ Court in January. The medic, from Ilford, Essex, was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment, suspended for a year, ordered to pay compensation of £347 for the Viagra and £2,561 for the NHS investigation.

UK student visa policy ‘baffling’ The UK's policy on student visas is baffling, the vice-chancellor of Oxford University has told an audience of academics. Prof Andrew Hamilton said when he travelled abroad "one question persists - why has the UK adopted a visa system so hostile to student entry? "I do my best to answer but, frankly, the question baffles me as well." The Home Office argues its overhaul of the student-visa system two years ago had been necessary to tackle abuse. But Prof Hamilton said the policy of limiting international student numbers was now harming the UK.

“For the first time in decades, the number of international students at our universities has dropped, most markedly from India.” "For the first time in decades, the number of international students at our universities has dropped, most markedly from India," he said. The government's policy of tightening up the student visa system has been criticised as damaging to the ability of UK universities to recruit economically valuable international students. Prof Hamilton used his annual oration to the university to urge political parties to end

student migrant targets and to use researchbased evidence in forming election policies, particularly on immigration. He cited recent research by Oxford's Migration Observatory, which, he argued, showed the public did not link overseas student numbers with immigration issues. "Study is the least frequent answer given when the public are asked what they consider the motives for migration to be," Prof Hamilton said. "Student migration simply isn't an issue for them and there are few votes in restricting overseas student numbers. "There are signs that this reality is beginning to dawn across the political spectrum - something to be welcomed and encouraged ahead of the election." He added that university research could help shed light on "complex political and policy challenges" and "defy the temptation to reach for simple or simplistic answers". "In essence, we can provide the data, the understanding and the analysis to underpin arguments and the possible solutions for the problems we all face," he said. Prof Hamilton called for more recognition of the huge public benefit that higher education brought to the UK - "sadly benefit which far outstrips the level of public investment in our sector". He noted that UK public investment in higher education stood at 0.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), "one of the lowest in Europe", and urged politicians to come up with "properly developed policies on higher education", which would benefit not only students and universities, but would also be "hugely beneficial to the public good".

Meet the world’s tallest five-year-old

Dhesi Grill S I M P L Y

D H E S I R A B L E

Five-and-a-half feet after one year at school GROWING: Karan Singh is more than two feet taller than many of his friends and his rapid growth is showing no signs of slowing down

When your mother is 7ft 3in and your father stands in at 6ft 7in, you are always likely to inherit the tall gene and for one young boy in India, that possibility has become a very real reality. Karan Singh may only be five-years-old yet he is already nearly the same height as the average UK male, measuring up to 5ft 7in in total. His extraordinary growth sees him tower above classmates and friends, and with no signs of slowing down, looks set to chase down his parents’ heights by his teens. According to the youngster’s father, Sanjay, Karan was born weighing a huge 15.4lb and measured over two feet, initially worrying the parents that their child may suffer from health complications. However, as the 35year-old explained, the doctors soon put any worries to rest. He said: “When he was born, he was unusually tall and heavy. We thought that he might be suffering from some kind of medical condition. But the doctors said he was healthy and fine. “The height and weight even shocked some doctors. Then Guinness recognised Karan

as the heaviest and the tallest baby born.” So how is Karan so tall at such a young age? The answer seems to lie in his genes. His mother, 26-yearold Shweatlana, was once considered the tallest woman in India and despite her age, is still growing. At such a height, Shweatlana has managed to make a career for herself playing basketball at a competitive level, even representing the nation in the past, as well as coaching the sport in local schools. With concerns around her continuous growth often worrying the mother, she says at least she is confident her son will grow up healthy. “I gain around 1.5 inches of height every couple of years. This is due to excess growth hormone,” she said. “I sometimes fear that this might even have consequences for Karan. But I know he is doing fine and he will grow up to be a nice and healthy person." She added that it has often been hard to raise such a tall child but as Karan continues to grow, the task has become somewhat easier. “It is always tough,” she said. “The hardest part is finding the clothes that fit him. “When he was baby, kid’s stores would never have his size of diapers. Thank God, we are beyond that stage. “Now, I just buy him adult size garments. They fit him perfectly well.”

Ofcom received two complaints about Geo News’ UK elections show broadcast in May 2014. The complainants said they thought the show was was not duly impartial in relation to the English local and European Parliamentary elections that took place on 22nd May 2014. The complainants consider that the programme only reflected the viewpoints of the Conservative Party and the Labour Party and failed to reflect the viewpoints of the Liberal Democrats and UK Independence Party (“UKIP”). A special Prancing Horse By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Dedicated to just 499 Ferrari collectors, the 458 Speciale A is the most powerful spider in Prancing Horse history, effortlessly marrying extreme performance with the sublime pleasure of drop-top driving. The 458 Speciale A sports the most powerful naturally-aspirated road-going V8 engine ever built by Ferrari. It punches out a massive 605 cv (135 cv/l specific power output) and 540 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm yet only generates 275 g/km of CO2 emissions. The three international Best Performance Engine awards the V8 has won are acknowledged on a special plaque in the cockpit. The new car sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds and has a Fiorano lap time of 1’23”5. These superb results are thanks in great part to its front and rear active aerodynamics, the rigidity of a chassis that incorporates 10 aluminium alloys, and Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) which guarantees unparalleled sporty driving in all conditions, underscored by the seductively exhilarating signature Ferrari

Limited edition dazzles with extreme performance of Ferrari 458 but as a drop-top soundtrack. As is the case with all Prancing Horse cars, the 458 Speciale A’s sculpted forms are absolutely performance-oriented. In fact, a series of innovative and original bodywork solutions has made the 458 Speciale A the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever. POWERTRAIN Punching out 605 cv at 9000 rpm, the 458 Speciale A’s engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever built in Maranello and also sets a new specific power record (135 cv/l) for a road-going power unit of this type. These two figures alone speak volumes about the extraordinary prowess of this 4497 cc mid-rear engine. The work carried out on the car as a whole has also delivered an

exceptional weight-to-power ratio of 2.21 kg/cv which results in such unparalleled performance levels as 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 3” (0 to 200 km/h in 9”5) and a Fiorano best lap time of just 1’23”5. To achieve these results, the 458 Speciale A’s combustion, mechanical and volumetric efficiency were all significantly improved with a focus on reaching ambitious targets such as boosting torque at all revs through upping the compression ratio to 14:1, the highest for an engine of this kind. The soundtrack, both inside and outside the car, is full-bodied and uncompromising too, thanks to the position of the tailpipes, the configuration of the silencers and the redesign of the inlet tract.

(RHT) that has become a signature of Ferrari spiders with this particular architecture. Extremely light, compact and functional, the RHT deploys and retracts in a record 14 seconds. Its mechanism is seamlessly smooth, giving the impression that its two sections simultaneously rotate. The retracted roof only takes up 100 litres of space rather than the 150-200 litres required to stow a conventional hard top. The glass electric rear window can be adjusted regardless of whether the RHT is deployed or retracted. This ensures superb in-cabin comfort even at high speeds when the top is dropped. In fact, occupants can easily carry on a normal conversation at speeds of over 200 Km/h. RETRACTABLE HARD TOP When the top is retracting, the The 458 Speciale A adopts the rear window automatically adjusts innovative retractable hard top to its optimal position at around one

third of its full height. This position was pinpointed through fluiddynamic simulations and wind tunnel testing using 1:1 scale models, and guarantees absolute maximum comfort as it prevents vortex creation behind occupants’ backs and the nape of their necks. VEHICLE DYNAMICS Record-breaking innovations were made to the 458 Speciale A’s electronics, brakes, suspensions and tyres also. Not only have they cut the car’s time over single laps, but also the repeatability of that performance on subsequent ones without demanding professional driving skills. The result is exceptional levels of pleasure behind the wheel. In terms of electronic control systems, the big news is the world premiere of Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) and improved F1 transmission gear-shift control. The dual-clutch transmission enhances the sporty feel and a reduction in response times means 40 per cent faster longitudinal acceleration with engine revs adapting 20 per cent more rapidly as the car shifts up through the gears while, when downshifting, the transient time required for engine revs to match the gear ratio is 44 per

exiting the radiator. The air outlets to the side of the headlight assemblies now also include three louvers reminiscent of the powerfully sporty Ferraris of the past, such as the 250 GTO and the F40. The rear features a Kamm tail with a fullwidth grille and twin exhausts.

cent faster. Every single component of the Brembo braking system has evolved and the solutions adopted for the LaFerrari have been adapted to suit it. Extreme Design calipers, HT2 discs with a high percentage of silicon and smaller front pads made from HY hybrid material are all new additions that add up to an 8 per cent reduction in stopping distances compared to the 458 Spider as well as more consistent performance under severe use. Michelin tyres designed specifically for the model guarantee a six per cent increase in grip and are made from a compound that boosts performance over a single lap in the dry,

improves performance consistency over multiple laps and guarantees better grip in the wet. The forged 20 wheels are a new design and are over 12 kg lighter than the 458 Spider’s. EXTERIOR As is the case with all Prancing Horse cars, sculpture is absolutely performance-oriented. Most of the bodywork panels have been redesigned without modifying either the passenger cell or the signature design features of the car. The composite bumpers have been redesigned and the front bonnet now features two deep air outlets to channel away the air

CABIN The cabin has a distinctive racing-inspired atmosphere with the focus on eliminating all superfluous weight. This was achieved by adopting lightweight yet exclusive materials including Alcantara and carbon-fibre crafted with Ferrari’s signature artisanal sophistication. The cockpit plays on the overlapping of materials and forms in successive layers to visually break up the volumes and underscore the generous interior. The glove compartment on the dash has been replaced with convenient odds and ends pockets on the tunnel and doors, significantly streamlining the volumes in this area. Onboard ergonomics are now exceptionally functional, thanks to the use of the iconic bridge, a carbon-fibre wing that extends over the central tunnel section, angling the F1 gearbox controls towards the driver. The newly-designed seats have Sabelt carbon-fibre shells and boast excellent side bolstering thanks to an ergonomic design. The shoulder-rests are trimmed in Alcantara for improved grip while seated, and the backrests and seat itself are padded with a breathable 3D fabric to guarantee excellent air circulation and comfort.

With a new name, new engine, new technology, same purpose – succeeding the most popular AMG model in its history, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 is set to evolve the formula – with even greater power, performance, agility and focus than ever before. Using the 205 series aluminium and steel chassis structure as its basis, the new C 63 adds an all-new 4.0-litre biturbo engine to endow it with phenomenal performance while unique, three-stage adjustable dampers and a bespoke steering setup. The technology applied to the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 is focussed on enhancing the performance of the car – to make it as exhilarating as possible yet viable to be used every day. The dynamic engine mounts fitted to the C 63 are a good example. They reduce unwanted vibration from the engine and gearbox by softening during normal driving conditions – when greater agility is required, they stiffen to improve responses through the speed-sensitive, electromechanical steering system and limit unwanted movement in the drivetrain. Every C 63 is fitted with 245/40 R18 (front) and 265/40 R18 (rear) tyres while the ‘S’ model gains 245/35 R19 (front) and 265/35 R19 (rear) tyres. A new braking system uses 390 mm discs at the front and 360 mm at the rear

with the option of enhanced ceramic discs available for trackorientated driving. At the heart of any AMG is its hand-built engine. The MercedesAMG C 63 uses the M177 engine – a sister unit to the M178 found in the new Mercedes-AMG GT. It

New Mercedes-AMG C63 all set to evolve the equation of power, performance and agility displaces 3,982 cc and is equipped with twin turbochargers neatly packaged in the ‘V’ of the cylinder banks and cooled via a special duct built in the bonnet of the car. The C 63 produces 476 hp and, in C 63 S guise, 510 hp. It’s nearly a third more efficient than the engine it replaces yet, in ‘S’ form, produces more power and emits less CO2 – now from 192 g/km.

THE WORLD CONTINUES TO WAIT ON THE BIGGEST AND MOST ANTICIPATED BOXING BOUT IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

PLAYER: Robert Pires is a World Cup winner himself and was one of the best wingers in the Premier League during his time with Arsenal and will join Zico at Goa FC

MANAGER: Zico, who starred with Brazil’s famed 1982 World Cup squad, will manage Goa FC as the ISL season begins this weekend

ISL Kick-off closes in Football set to arrive in India

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The players are ready, the fans are ready, the stadiums are ready, all we need now is for a ball and a whistle and the 2014 inaugural Hero Indian Super League (ISL) can finally get underway. Kicking off this weekend, the ISL has been a long time coming with a new level of competitive football arriving in India for the first time. Described by FIFA chief Sepp Blatter as a ‘sleeping giant’, the competition will see eight teams compete in a league format before the top four faceoff in a playoff structure, to crown an overall champion.

Each side is made up of Indian national players alongside a selection of international footballers and one ‘marquee signing’ in each team. The eight ‘poster boys’ of this year’s contest will be: Luis Garcia, Elano, Alessandro Del Piero, David James, Robert Pires, Fredrik Ljungberg, Joan Capdevilla and David Trezeguet. Familiar faces can also be found in the dugouts with managers including the likes of David James, who will also take on a playing role with his side Kerala Blasters, as well as former World Cup legend, Zico and England international, Peter Reid. The confirmed big names

have already drawn in huge media attention in the South Asian country as the countdown to kick-off continues. Unlike in Europe, last minute additions to teams will not be occurring due to a draft structure for transfers yet that doesn’t mean action in the boardroom has come to a standstill with a new partner announced for one of the league’s hotly tipped sides. Indian cricket legend, MS Dhoni, has purchased a stake in the ISL franchise Chennaiyin FC, who are being headed this year by manager Marco Materazzi. Speaking to reporters about his decision to hop aboard the ISL bandwagon, Dhoni said:

“As all of you know, I began my sporting activities as a footballer and was a goalkeeper for my school and then shifted to cricket since we didn't have a wicketkeeper in our team. “And as far my association with Chennaiyin FC is concerned, I have always been a big fan of football and Manchester United and I follow English Premier League. “It gives immense happiness to be a part of this team and I'm sure, with the kind of players we have in our ranks, we'll make Chennaiyin FC a great side.” The ISL officially begins on Sunday 12th October and will conclude on Saturday 20th December.

One of my all-time favourite American singing artists, Elvis Presley, wrote a song that said ‘a little less conversation, a little more action please, all this aggravation isn’t satisfying me, a little more bite and little less bark’ and this is the perfect explanation to the recent verbal internet attacks Floyd Mayweather has made towards Manny Pacquiao. On Friday, Mayweather wrote on Twitter ‘my new boxing DVD is coming soon and is called three ways to sleep back, face … and falling and I can’t get up. Miss Pac Man is broke and desperate for a pay day. Your PayPer-View numbers are a joke.” This was one message in a series of insults directed at Pacquiao and went on to show images of Pacquiao knocked out on the boxing canvas. Mayweather is an American boxer and probably the richest athlete in the history of the sport. He is universally recognised as the best pound for pound boxer on the planet with the current boxing record of 47 wins with 26 knockouts. Pacquiao is a Philippines boxer and his boxing record rivals (if not exceeds) Mayweather’s accomplishments even though he is currently ranked at number two in the best pound for pound world rankings with a current boxing record of 56 wins, five losses and two draws with 38 knockouts. There are many boxing experts who state that Mayweather has beaten all of his 47 boxing rivals and will win against Pacquiao should this boxing bout take place and I believe this could happen. However in my opinion what the boxing experts fail to recognise is that Pacquiao is not just any other fighter and he cannot be put in the same category as Mayweather’s previous 47 opponents. Mayweather’s recent Twitter insults against Pacquiao in my opinion show that he is annoyed by the fact that he is constantly bombarded with the same question

in every interview and that is “when are you going to fight Pacquiao?.” Mayweather may well be the “Best Ever” boxer in the history of boxing and surpass the Rocky Marciano undefeated boxing world record as the most wins without a loss but Mayweather’s legacy may always be remembered as “He never fought Pacquiao.” Mayweather has always said that his fights are now “about the fans and what they want.” However the boxing fans have been screaming and shouting about the fight against Pacquiao for some time but as far as Mayweather is concerned it has fallen on deaf ears. There has been a number of reasons speculated as to why Mayweather will not fight Pacquiao and some suggestions are that he (Mayweather) is scared to lose his undefeated record, rival networks for both boxers that cannot agree the terms of the fight, Mayweather believes that Pacquiao may have taken sport enhancing drugs and Mayweather does not like Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum. However I seriously believe that all the reasons suggested for the fight not to take place are false and the fight will take place when and if Mayweather agrees to the fight because in the world of boxing “Money Talks”. Mayweather’s father Floyd Mayweather Snr has recently been heard saying that his son Mayweather will fight Pacquiao but wants to leave the best for the last - something I personally agree with. However this fight needs to take place now or never because I feel both Mayweather and Pacquiao are now showing signs of vulnerabilities especially in their last boxing bouts and both are reaching the twilight of career. This fight will in my opinion happen this year or early next year providing neither fighter suffers a heavy loss until thenon their impressive boxing records against the younger upcoming fighters like Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia that is a big possibility.

Flowers ‘had it in for me’

FRUSTRATED: Kevin Pietersen has been very vocal about his views on former England coach, Andy Flower, who he says never told him the reasons behind why he was dropped from the national squad

Pietersen slams former coach in release of new book

England’s charismatic batsman, Kevin Pietersen, has hit out at former head coach Andy Flower, labelling him a ‘mood hoover’ who tried to get rid of him during his time with the national side. Pietersen has been very vocal about Flower in his new book, ‘KP’ set for public release on Thursday 9th October, as well as a host of his former England team mates. After previews of his book were released in the Telegraph newspaper, it was clear that KP’s relationship wasn’t the healthiest with his former coach who took over the head job in 2009. And, following an interview on BBC Radio 4’s the ‘Today Programme’ that message was

Force India’s drivers will be happy to have come away with a double points finish in Japan last weekend on a day that will be remembered for one of the most serious crashes in Formula One’s recent years. Marussia driver, Jules Bianchi, was taken to hospital unconscious after his car veered off the track and slammed into a recovery vehicle in Suzuka. He underwent surgery upon his

made all the more clear. Pietersen told the BBC: “I didn't have a great relationship with the coach (Flower) throughout his reign... I think he had it in for me ever since he took over because when I was captain, I didn't think he was doing the second-incommand job really well. “And when I said to the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) to just let me step down as captain and let Peter Moores continue, I gave my views on the coaching structure and said I didn't think Andy Flower was fulfilling his role properly. “Then he got given the number one job and it certainly felt the way that he treated me throughout his coaching reign, that he was

looking to try and find ways to get rid of me.” Pietersen’s interview comes off the back of his latest excerpt released from his book in which a tirade of derogatory comments were made about Flower. One extract read: “Andy Flower. Contagiously sour. Infectiously dour. He could walk into a room and suck all the joy out of it in five seconds. Just a mood hoover. That's how I came to think of him: a Mood Hoover.” Despite its critics, including former team mate Graeme Swann dismissing the read as the ‘biggest work of fiction since Jules Verne’, the book is likely to receive a positive release following some exciting extracts.

arrival at hospital and was then moved on to the Intensive Care Unit shortly after where he remains to date. Bianchi’s crash highlighted the dangers of the high-intensity sport and all the driver’s sent their well wishes to the young 24-year-old. Back on track, Nico Hulkenberg picked up four points as he came home in eighth position with teammate Sergio Perez accepting the solitary point two positions

further back. A tough track, which had to endure bucket loads of rain throughout the day, saw all drivers have to contend with poor visibility and the constant risk of aquaplaning. For Hulkenberg, whose form had slipped since his flying start to the season, it was a good achievement to get points on the board. He said: “Up until the final laps my race was going pretty well, I had

good pace and a good feeling with the car. “We made some progress early on, pitted late and we were able to jump a few cars in the first stop. I can't say it was a very eventful afternoon for me; I was on my own for most of the time. “I am happy to get points after a difficult Saturday; we made up for it today. “Suzuka is a difficult track to race on in the wet because there are lots

of places where you can aquaplane and have a moment. I didn't see what happened in the accident that ended the race, but I hope Jules is okay.” With just four races left of the current campaign, Force India remain just one point ahead of McLaren-Mercedes in the constructors standings and will be looking to continue their run of points in Russia this weekend.

Ramzan’s on a Roll

Gold was the colour for a young Kickboxer from Bradford, as Zeeshaan Ramzan clinched top prize in a national championship. The eight-year-old has been competing in the sport for almost ayear-and-a-half and has already found plenty of success. His latest triumph came at the WKA English Open Championships at Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday where he came away with a gold medal in the under 25kg novice category. After a tough semi-final, the Copthorne Primary School pupil advanced into the final and eventually picked up his first place award following a mature display. Victory in the competition now also sees Zeeshaan qualify for the WKA World Championships next year in Italy. His father, Mohammed Ramzan, says he was delighted to see his son succeed and looks forward to a possible week away next year. “I am very proud of him winning and advancing into the World Championships,” he said. “He is always confident going into tournaments and for someone so young he is very good. I look forward to going to Italy next year if we can find another sponsor to help fund his trip.”

COACH: Esa has been training at the Azar Farooq Kickboxing Club since he was just four-years-old and received his purple belt from Azar Farooq last week

Back page story continued His father, Amjad Hussain, is admittedly his son’s ‘biggest supporter’ and said the dedication Esa has towards the sport has helped him flourish at such a young age. “The last two to three months has seen Esa just focus on getting the purple belt,” he said. “He got the green belt at the age of seven and was determined to get this belt before he turned eight as well which he has managed to do now. “All the tournaments and competitions have been put into the background at the moment, allowing him to train two to three

times a week. The most important thing is to see him keeping happy and by doing this he is achieving that.” Esa trains at the Azar Farooq Kickboxing Club two to three times a week and is the most qualified kick-boxer in his age range. Azar Farooq commended the youngster’s efforts and described him as a ‘great example’ to others for his attitude to the sport. “He’s been working really hard, training twice a week and his father supports him all the way,” Azar said. “By showing commitment to regular training it helps you achieve in any sport and Esa is a great example of that. “He is one of the youngest who

attends the club and has stuck at it from day one. He definitely deserves his purple belt and next he will go for the blue, then brown and finally black.” Azar, who is a fifth-Dan black belt himself, also added that his own personal aim is to get more children involved in the sport as to ensure they don’t go down the wrong path in life. “When kids are involved in sports it gets them off the street and takes them away from any potential bad habits such as smoking,” he said. “You begin to think more about yourself and your body and by attending something such as kickboxing classes, you also have fun and learn at the same time.”

A seven-year-old kickboxing enthusiast from Bradford has continued on his amazing venture in the sport after clinching his purple belt last week. It may not be the most conventional sport yet for Esa Hussain, kickboxing is a passion which he just cannot get enough of. The Hollingwood Primary School pupil has been training in the field since he was just four-years-old and has already earned five belts, prior to his purple accolade. His latest achievement adds to his growing list of titles and awards, which are all proudly displayed back at the family home. To earn the purple belt, Esa had to complete a number of moves and combinations with a near flawless routine ensuring he passed the grade and moved his eyes onto the next target – the blue belt.
