Ashwini is an Interior Architect with a focus on functional design that is immersive and timeless. Her interest lies in using form, texture, colour and movement to create unique spatial experiences that is site and brief specific. Completed projects include The Serpentine Coffee House in Hyde Park where material differentiation of composite fibres were used to create an optimized manta ray inspired brass canopy; A Children’s Restaurant in The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew where life size sculptures of funghi and plants create an immersive experience for children to learn about the journey of plant to plate; A Mud Hut village in Udaipur that is a celebration of vernacular building techniques and contemporary form building among others.

FAMILY RESTAURANT KEW GARDENS, LONDON 2020-2021

Client: Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew Stage: Completed Dec 2021 Area: 1100 Sqm Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Matthew Chilton, Ashwini Ashokkumar Architects: HOK Interior Contractors: City Axis Installation Contractors: Firecracker Works

Left: Interior of completed restaurant showing interactive woven willow fungi sculpture by artist Tom Hare ©James McDonald Photography Top: Initial conceptual sketch showing different zones that interpret the brief Right: Mood image

Role: Senior Designer Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 to 6 As part of the design team I was involved in conceptual design and interior layout. Was lead designer for three key zones: Giant Garden, Autumn Garden and Spring Garden for which I was involved in all stages from client presentation to delivery. Other responsibilities included material palette selection, budgeting and value engineering, liaising with contractors, routine factory and site visits, collaborating with consultants on design intersections etc.

Project Description: The Kew Family Restaurant & Shop is part of Kew’s vision to bring clever design and functionality to help their young visitors learn more about bio-diversity, farming, food security and other areas of Kew research. Each seating zone is designed to be immersive with interactive displays and life size sculptures that aim to enrich the learning experience of the journey of plant to plate. An Enset seating sculpture highlighting Kew’s work on Ethiopia’s ‘tree against hunger’ and a mushroom banquette bringing the spotlight on Kew’s fungarium are among some of the features.

Left: Part View of Tree Cycle. A cycling studio where cycles are connected upto interactive LEDs that respond to the cycle’s speed embedded in a treelike structure at the front of the studio. Top: Interior of Spa Treatment room with brass clad arches dusty pink acoustic wall panelling and bespoke terazzo massage bed. Right: Mood images- body, nature, health and technology.

Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Ashwini Ashokkumar, Silvia Zanolini, Jomarie Mayo, Julia Frendo Fit-out Contractors: Contrada Group MEP Consultants: Scicluna & Associates Role: Senior Designer Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 to 4 As part of the design team I was involved in conceptual design and masterplan layout. Was lead designer for three key zones: Tree cycle studio, the Sauna and Steam rooms and Spa treatment for which I was involved in all stages from client presentation to technical design. Other responsibilities included material palette selection, budgeting and value engineering, liaising with contractors, detail design, prototyping etc.

Project Description: The design proposal builds on four key aspects: Nature, Body, Health and Technology. The goal is to create a space that revitalises and heals. The circulation spaces are uninterrupted and clad with warm steam bent timber while the sauna and steam rooms are immersive ceramic tile clad vortexes that elevate and ground at the same time. The tree cycle is an organic sculptural piece that combines functionality and art and housed within a full height glass enclosure also acts as a centre piece to the Club. Trinity Luxury Health Club

ALF MIZZI HEADQUARTERS MARSA, MALTA 2019

Client: Alf Mizzi & Sons (Marketing Group) Stage: Completed 2019 Area: 1800 Sqm Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Ashwini Engineers: MMP Malta Stair Manufacturer: EE Stairs

Left: The feature staircase that combines function with art. It is constructed out of sixty satin stainless steel handrails joined together ©Jonathan Mizzi Top: View of the spiral stair looking into the skylight. ©Jonathan Mizzi

Role: Senior Designer Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 to 6 As project designer I was involved in conceptual design and interior layout. Detail design for reception, all standard and executive cabins, conference room and feature staircase. I was involved in all stages from client presentation to technical design pack. 3D modelling, delivering tender and construction packs and liaising with contractors and stakeholders.

Project Description: The new headquarters for the Alf Mizzi and Sons Marketing group in Malta aims to signify the values and drivers of the business – sophistication, transparency and innovation. These are achieved through design in sculptural, textural and material form. The dramatic entrance is the first point of contact for visitors to the headoffice and hence was designed to create a grand impression with vortex ceiling and monolith reception desk. The central staircase sitting beneath a skylight offers a functional yet artistic feature for the employees.

HOLI SALONI RAJASTHAN, INDIA 2018

Left: One of the guests (Dree Hemingway) celebrating the festival of Holi outside the mud huts ©Signe Vilstrup Top: Mudhut Skylight detail ©Jonathan Mizzi Right: Woven archway entrance to Secret Garden ©Jonathan Mizzi

Role: Project Lead Responsibilities: As the project lead I was involved in all stages from conceptual design to delivery. Initial 3D modelling and client presentation from the London studio and on site construction supervision from Udaipur. Finalising the layout on site by maximizing views of surroundings within the design. Working collaboratively with the artisans to understand the traditional technique and adapt it to suit the geometries proposed in the design.

Project Description: To celebrate 10 years of her eponymous fashion brand ‘Saloni’ the client decided to host an event at the palace-converted RAAS Devigarh hotel in Udaipur on the Indian festival of Holi. The brief was to create a set that celebrates Indian vernacular architecture while giving it a Star Wars Tatooine vibe. The result is a duo of mud huts sitting as a reflection of the aravalli hills in the background with portholes to the palace. This is surrounding by multiple sculptural elements. Some plastered in mud and painted by local artists and other left bare to expose the beautiful woven texture of the construction.

Merits: Longlisted for Dezeen Awards ‘Small Project’ category 63

CONSTRUCTION IMAGES

Traditional mud hut artisans working with woven local reeds

The technique of construction involved creating trenches in the ground where the “Aakhdo” (Calotropis procera) - a local plant that grows in abundance - are inserted and filled with “Khemp” (hay) before being woven together. A bundles of these materials are then woven together to create structural arches to join both forms.

FIREKRAKEN

KING’S CROSS, LONDON 2018 Client: Restaurant and Bar Design Awards Stage: Completed Oct 2018 Area: 45 Sqm Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Ashwini Ashokkumar Contractor: FireCracker Works

Left: Detail of the firekraken lighting sculpture ©Matthew B Andews Photography Top: View of the Firekraken incorporating the sign ‘5’ within the given 3m cube framework.

Role: Project Lead Responsibilities: As the project lead I was involved in all stages from conceptual design to delivery. 3D modelling and client presentation. Liaising with contractors to develop design solutions for ease of assembly and creative solutions to increase impact while keeping cost of production to a minimum (pro bono project for designer and contractor). Factory and on site installation checks.

Project Description: As part of the 10th year anniversary of The Restaurant and Bar Design Awards 5 design studios were invited to interpret the theme of ‘Celebration’ within a huge three dimensional tapestry. The ‘Firekraken’ is an immersive lighting installation that freezes dancing fireworks in a moment of time and reanimates it with addressable LEDs. These are choreographed to evoke the spectacular natural phenomenon of bioluminescent organisms - a playful fusion of dancing fireworks and a family of sea creatures dancing together in the deep.

Right: Prototype testing at Firecracker works factory.

LATIMER STUDIOS LATIMER ROAD, LONDON 2019-Present

Client: Perseus International Investments Ltd. Stage: Planning Area: 1000 Sqm Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Ashwini Ashokkumar Planning Application: Tania Martin Building Regulation Consultants: Assent Building Control Left: South View of the building proposal from Latimer Road Top: Site Location satellite view. Site is located in the north-western part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in St. Helen’s Ward. Right: Latimer Road looking north-west c.1900. 3 storey houses on west side were demolished in 1980s

Role: Project Lead Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 to 3 As project Lead I was involved in all stages from Site study to Planning. Massing studies, material palette, layout studies, liaising with consultants and preparing planning pack. Ensuring the design complies with guidelines from the National Planning Policy, London Plan, St.Quintins Neighbourhood Plan as well as the newly issued Design Code set out by RBKC.

Project Description: The new proposal at Unit 11 Latimer road aims to become the cornerstone of a new mixed-use vibrant ‘creative quarter’ that will set the tone for the regeneration of Latimer Road. The building consists of 2 storeys of commercial and 3 storeys of residential with the 5th floor set back such that it is not seen from street level. The massing studies informed the buildings silhouette which increased density of site without compromising on privacy. The building’s curved corners help soften it whilst the material palette is sensitive to the street context.

MASSING STUDY

Stages to arrive at final building silhouette

1

Existing footprint maximised to 6 full storeys to accommodate B1 units at ground level and above. The resultant structure feels extremely overbearing.

2

Exploration of reduction in the height of the building to five storeys as per RBKC (/AR/18/08501/L3FU) and APP advice in 2018 for the site. The overbearing nature still exists.

3

Height of the building is reduced to 4 storeys with setback. Reducing the height to 4 storeys and creating setback offers a less imposing feel to the street. The fifth floor is set back to not be visible at street level.

4

The closet wing is reintroduced opening up the site. Differentiation in height allows for a more interesting and appealing architectural appearance and allows increased daylight and sunlight to the street.

5

6 full storey development of Latimer Industrial Estate would create an unacceptable sense of enclosure, diminish sky views, day light and sunlight and increase shadowing on the west side of the street.

6

4 storeys with a fifth floor set back and retaining the closet wing ensures that light and sky view factor are not compromised if replicated across the development of the Industrial Estate. 79

MUSCAT MOTORS GZIRA, MALTA 2020-Present

Client: Muscat Motors, Malta Stage: Planning Area: 18,000 Sqm Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Jo Formosa, Ashwini Ashokkumar Architects: Edwin Mintoff, Malta Role: Project Assistant Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 As the project assistant I was involved in 3D detailed modelling and grasshopper studies for massing.

Project Description: Muscat Tower aims to be the tallest building in Malta. With rapid development in Malta becoming inevitable, Mizzi Studio’s design aims to bring an elegance to the skyline by introducing a slender tower that draws inspiration from a strong vertebral column. With soft rounded edges, backward taper and a narrow base level the building does not become overbearing within its context.

CHISWICK HOUSE SCHOOL PEMBROKE, MALTA 2020-Present

Client: Bernie Mizzi, Malta Stage: Planning Area: 14,000 Sqm Design Team: Jonathan Mizzi, Jo Formosa, Ashwini Ashokkumar Architects: MMP, Malta Role: Project Assistant Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 As the project assistant I was involved in concept, detailed design and 3D modelling of surrounding landscape.

Project Description: The proposed scheme is for Chiswick House School – a co-educational establishment in Malta, catering for students between the ages of two and eighteen. Their new building would see the construction of a new primary school with thirty-six classrooms and varied outdoor sport facilities. The new Chiswick House School premises will be one of the first in Europe to use the innovative pod and open-classroom concept, where children are encouraged to interact with their natural environment rather than being confined to an indoor classroom.

THORNHILL SCHOOL LIBRARY ISLINGTON, LONDON 2016

Client: Thornhill Primary School Islington Stage: Conceptual Design Area: 50 Sqm Design Team: Alex Haw, Aditya Bhatt, Ashwini Ashokkumar Structural Design: Fluid Structures

Left: Interior View of the library showing the tree-like shelving, the central helical stair and the ceiling rose. All designed with CNC cut and engraved Grade A birch ply.

Role: Project Assistant Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 to 4 As project assistant I was involved in 3D modelling and preparing tender packages. Design detailing and liaising with potential contractors. I was also involved in creating assets for social media fundraising campaigns.

Project Description: To refurbish the existing library into a magical forest of books the design optimised the given space with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling shelves. Books become like the fruit of the shelving trees, which branch to support the balconies - a ‘natural’ part of everyday life. In plan, the shelving verticals were laid out on a precise equiangular radial grid of the Dewey Decimal classification (DDC) system. The project’s design of a double staircase loop that spatially accesses all areas also echoes the DDC’s rich network of relationships between topics.

Top: Section through the library showing profile of tree-like shelving ribs that also extend to become structure for mezzanine level and seating. Right: Mood image

99

CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

Step-by-step construction sequence and design logic

1

3

5

100

The space is organized by a radial grid based on the Dewey Decimal system

‘Secondary’ Structural Ribs made of 2 layers of 18 mm structural plywood and 2 additional articulation layers are placed between them, halving the span.

The usable area of the library is doubled by the mezzanine reading area on split levels and the seating areas beneath them.

2

4

6

10 ‘primary’ Structural Ribs made of 2 layers of 24 mm structural plywood and 2 additional articulation layers are arranged at every alternate interval dividing the space into 10 quadrants.

Concentric Intermediary truss beams connect key loading points between the ribs providing support for the mezzanine and stairs leading up.

The 100 divisions of the grid are finally manifested into the space as tertiary ribs that form the additional supports holding up the shelves.

CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

Final assembly overlaid with the DDC system

The 10 major divisions produce 10 major, dominant verticals; the half-way subdivisions produce secondary “minor” supports, with the finer hundredths further visualised with ultraslender vertical filigree-work. The shelving grids can be creatively curated and colonised as desired. Emptier spaces visualise for the visitor the frontiers of knowledge not yet represented in the room. The physicality of the sculptural shelves remind us that knowledge and learning are not mere abstractions, but bear concrete relation to our real, material world.

Role: Project Assistant Responsibilities: RIBA Stage 2 to 4 As project assistant I was involved in 3D modelling and preparing tender and construction packages for the library within the larger residential project. Design detailing and liaising with potential contractors. Working closely with the studio director to develop a design language that is adaptable to various on site constraints yet reads as a single fluid geometric expression.

Project Description: 222, St John’s is a residential project for a couple in West London. The client is a researcher looking to build an immersive library within their home to carry out her path-breaking research in Internal Medicine. The library is designed to be an assembly of tree-like ribs holding up fluid shelves to encase a fantastic volume. The articulation and detailing include various ‘genes’ that are developed to inform the design system of the whole. These respond to on site elements like windows, skylights and room divisions.

VEIN+MEMBRANE

ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION, LONDON 2014 Course: Emergent Technologies and Design (MSc.) Tutors: Michael Weinstock, George Jeronomidis, Evan Greenberg Subject: Biomimetics Design Team: Antoniya Stoitsova, Di Zhou, Ashwini Ashokkumar

Left: Artistic View of the final design. Top: Biomimetic study of dragonfly wing. Right: Active and Passive layers to emulate the structural properties of the dragonfly wing.

Responsibilities: As part of the design team I was involved in initial biomimetic study of the dragonfly wing. This included academic research, physical model testing and computer simulations. The findings were then extrapolated into design parameters to create a simple and effective pavilion using tensile membranes and steel to mimic the structural properties of the dragonfly wing.

Project Description: The reticulate vein pattern of the dragonfly wing works in combination with cross-bracing membranes to reorganize its form as an instantaneous response when subjected to multi-directional wind loads. The stresses are transfered to the muscles at the thorax whilst undergoing constant deformations to achieve ideal forms for various load conditions. The effect of vein pattern, corrugation and variable flexibility is studied to design a system that is lightweight and capable of withstanding multiple load conditions.

CALCULATED DESIGN CEPT UNIVERITY, INDIA 2012

Course: Bachelor of Interior Design (B.Des) Tutors: Krishna Shastri, Kireet Patel, Anand Ramakrishnan, Snehal Nagarsheth Subject: Design Thesis Guide: Sakthiveil Ramaswamy

Left: View of the ‘Vimanam’ of Kailasanatha Temple. ©Sitara Menon Top: Symbolic meaning of the Vimanam to draw the devotees eye to infinity. ©Sitara Menon Right: Plan of temple complex. ©Alexander Rea

Abstract: Mathematics has developed as man’s way of understanding nature. ‘Calculated Design’ is a research thesis aimed at finding the relationship between nature and built-form by understanding the role of the inherent order of mathematical principles in responding to contextual pressures.

The Pallava kings of the 8th century translated this cosmomoral order through their building of temples. The temple superstructure (or Vimana) appears as a pyramidal monolith, however the closer you get more details are revealed bringing more depth to the form. The form is a result of the chains of aedicules that reduce in scale at each level following an infinite sequence. Merits: CEPT University Award for Best Research Thesis, GICEA Gold Medal

The Kailasanatha Temple is an 8th Century Shaivaite temple and therefore existed in a strong context determined by the prevalent religious setting of the reigning king. In keeping with the philosophy of the Shaivaite religion the temple symbolized the “Chain of Being”- the cycle of construction and destruction of the cosmos. 139
