Instructor Padme Blackwolf is a professional gardener, urban farmer, and self-reliance activist. She has lived in Ashland for more than 30 years raising children, food, pets and farm animals, all on a city lot! Her family has been involved with farming and food preservation for generations. The Barnyard in Your Backyard: Farm Animals in Our City Farm animals in the city? Why yes! Many farm animals work well on a small lot if their location is well thought out and their care thoughtfully considered. Come learn all about the keeping of chickens, bees, goats, rabbits, pigs, and more. We will discuss the City rules for these animals and best practices for keeping animals for food and fun. Are You Ready? Family Preparedness for a Crisis Are your home and family ready for another flood like in 1997 or an earthquake? Come learn what you need to do now to be safe, comfortable, and on your own if a crisis occurs city–wide, state–wide, or nationally. Urban Homesteading: The Vegetable & Fruit Garden as the Core of Your Independence Less than a hundred years ago, the small farm was king. If you didn’t live on a farm, at least you had chickens in your backyard and grew your own vegetables. Now there is a resurgence of gardening for self-reliance. Preserving the Harvest: Drying, Canning, Pickling This workshop will focus on how to take advantage of the bounty in your garden or extra food purchased from the Farmers’ Market. Learn a number of ways to preserve your harvest for the winter, including basic canning, dry storage, root cellars and adventures with your freezer.
