Dress to Impress Divya Goyal

People judge you first from 12 feet away, then from 12 inches away and finally based on the first 12 words out of your mouth, says the celebrated aromatherapist and beauty expert, Dr. Blossom Kochhar. In an interview with MICEtalk she reveals the tips and tricks of corporate grooming.

I

t is believed that dressing smartly and a well groomed look is critical to achievesuccess for any professional. It is equally, if not more, important to exude confidence and look the part you are meant to in addition to being exceptional at your work. Dressing definitely sparks off the initial image in people’s minds, as Dr. Kochhar said, “There is no erase button and your image transmits a message about you all day every day. Appearances count for career advancement because image, polish and presence are important. It may not be ‘fair’ and perhaps it should not matter, but it does.” According to her in just 30 seconds, people form different impressions based almost on what they see and smell that includes clothes, hair style, how you

carry yourself and through other means of nonverbal communication. In case of corporate meetings and international events it becomes extremely important to present yourself in the right way, as in the case of the latter you are not only presenting yourself but your company too. When it comes to dressing for a corporate event Dr. Kochhar advises to choose an attire that flatters and not just what is in vogue. She says that if the visual image is positive, the person you’ve just met will tend to assume that what you have to say or do will be equally positive. Your dressing also reflects professional discipline and a respect for the job and the people with whom you interact. Speaking against the popular idea that image is about looks, Dr. Kochhar says, “Image is more about being perceived as trustworthy, competent or believable. A good image gives the impression that you do not make snap decisions and do not sloppy work or scramble to keep things together.” According to Dr. Kochhar, ‘Neat and appropriate’ should be the mantra of professionals; neat hair, attire, nails, shoes, breath and body odour. The key is to control and change the visual credentials and manage them such that they contribute to professional success. There is however, more to image than clothes. “Posture, effective use of personal space, eye contact Tips on Accessories ÀÊ7 i \ UÊ 7i>ÀÊÜi Ê ii i`ÊV v ÀÌ>L iÊv ÌÜi>À UÊ Ê-ÌÀ>««i`Ê ii ÃÊ} ÛiÊÌ iÊ ÕÃ Ê vÊ }iÀÊ i}ÃÊ iÛi ÊÊ vÊÌ iÊà iÃÊ>ÀiÊ« >Ìv À ÃÊ UÊ Ê- Ê iÊà iÃÊÜ Ì Ê>Ê i>ÌÊw à Ê>ÀiÊLiÃÌÊÌ Ê i }>ÌiÊÌ iÊv Ì UÊ Ê >à ÞÊà iÃ]Ê>Ì iÌ VÊv ÌÜi>ÀÊy « y «ÃÊ> `Ê Ã ««iÀÃÊ>ÀiÊ ÌÊ>VVi«Ì>L iÊ ÊÌ iÊ vwVi ÀÊ i \ UÊ 7i>ÀÊÜi Ê ii i`ÊÃ i®ÊV v ÀÌ>L iÊv ÌÜi>À UÊ - V ÃÊÃ Õ `ÊLiÊ >ÌV i`ÊÜ Ì ÊÞ ÕÀÊà iÃ

and even your smile contribute to the perception about you! A good posture identifies you instantly as someone with something to contribute,” she says, before adding that a person’s walk should be purposeful and counsels, “Powerful posture is squared, direct and erect, but not rigid or tense.” While sitting in a meeting or conference, Dr. Kochhar reveals, “People do not trust you as much if they cannot see your hands.” For men, she advises not to keep both hands in pockets as it is often seen as untrustworthy. For women she says hands clasped or by the side are acceptable. Also during presentations and conference meets she opines not to slump in the chair either. “Head up, do not tilt to one side, it makes you look either puzzled or flirtatious,” she adds crisply. She also cautions against gestures such as, drumming fingers, twisting a ring, repeatedly checking your watch or playing with your hair, as these are negative gestures suggesting lack of interest and boredom. She is of the opinion that when the spoken and unspoken messages are congruent, communication is comfortable. However, “When body language and words disagree, the body language is the most believable,” she warns. she believes that eye contact and even a simple handshake are of vital importance when it comes to perceiving any professional. “Solid eye contact instantly conveys the twin messages, ‘I am important- and so are you’. Lack of eye contact communicates lack of confidence or dishonesty and lack of interest in the individual or the information,” she explains. In her workshops she often conducts eye contact exercises to better prepare her corporate clients for their next meeting. A handshake she says is an invaluable opportunity to set a cordial tone for any interaction. To present yourself as a confident professional, she recommends that you should be the first to extend your (right) hand, “Thumb up and fingers together. Squeeze firmly, match pressure, shake in a short rhythm, then release,” she elaborates. She strongly opines that the way you present yourself is an irrefutable signal to the world; indicating how you value yourself. On a concluding note she says that nothing succeeds like the attitude of success. “Be confident that you’ve presented your best self and then forget about it,” she adds.

A Sultanate for Incentive Travel Ipshita Sengupta Nag

The Arab country of Oman has often found a mention as a ‘must see’ destination for its cultural, historical, ecological and topographic brilliance. Less than three hours away from the Indian city of Mumbai and little over two hours from Delhi and within six to seven hours distance from European destinations, Oman’s diversity finds many takers in the MICE population of the world. In 2008 the International airport in its capital, Muscat, underwent a complete renovation, giving a grander welcome to those who travel into this region.

The diverse landscape - from the fjords and barrenness of Musandam, to the sands of the Wahiba and from the Hajjar mountain range to the green monsoon area of Salalah – are a treat for the senses and are being preserved with as much care as the ancient forts, castles and mosques. Add to this, the lure of the traditional souks, the sumptuous Arabic cuisine and the various artifacts you can pick up from the local stores and you have a perfect incentive platter before you. Meetings and conferences in Oman will find a new address in the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, which will soon open for business. The presence of this world-class venue is expected to make Oman a noticeable contender when it comes to bidding for

and exhibitions in Oman for many years now, with its indoor and outdoor space. While organising a MICE itinerary for Oman, it is important to bear in mind that it is the second largest country in the Arabian Peninsula. One of the major attractions with travellers is the Desert Safari in Muscat. The delegates are driven down in a cavalcade of 4x4s for the most exhilarating ride on the dunes. The journey ends at a Bedouin camp where there is food and entertainment. Corporates may do this as a beďŹ tting ďŹ nale or a perfect start for their Oman adventure, as these camp nights provide plenty of opportunities for branding and speeches and hence the chance to bond as a team. Camel Riding is another popular activity. Oman is an experience of contrasts. So if the desert activities leave you breathless, the country’s marine activities will surely leave you gasping for more. The unique topography of the region makes water-based activities a rage with corporate travellers. So you can

go dolphin watching or look out for other treasures of the sea, like barracuda or tuna. Keen anglers can also try out deep sea ďŹ shing. Each of the regions of Oman has a unique experience to oer and this is the reason why it is diďŹƒcult to experience a dull moment when you schedule your MICE visit here. Muscat, the capital city of Oman, for instance, oers a blend of the old world and the new. The Southern region of Oman, in particular Salalah, enjoys a long monsoon, from June to mid September and can be a treat for the eyes because of its lush waterfalls and streams. Again a region which offers several water sports! Musandam is the other region that sees many corporate groups through the year, because of the opportunities for outdoor activities it offers. The region also is known for the opportunities to see coral reefs and beautiful archaeological sights. The diversity of Oman becomes more apparent in the rare opportunity it provides to nature lovers. Four hours drive from the South of Muscat is the isolated Bay of Ras Al Jinz, where the beaches are the largest nesting site for green turtles on the Indian Ocean. Meetings and Incentive groups make sure that this is added to their itinerary as they are planning their trip to Oman. Watching the young hatchlings as they make their way to the sea is a sight that will stay with you. A visit to Oman would not be complete without taking a leisurely afternoon walk through its famous souks (markets); fragrant spices, silver jewellery, aromatic incense sticks or local handicrafts, you are completely spoilt for choice! Groups coming to Oman for their incentive holidays or during their post-event hours visit famous souks like Muttrah, the oldest and by far the most well known in Oman, the Nizwa Souq, Al Hafah Souq in Salalah and many others.

Oman, particularly Muscat, unexpectedly, also enjoys a vibrant nightlife, with plenty of wining, dining and entertainment options to choose from. You can unwind after work by dancing to some great music at the nightclubs and then enjoy a sumptuous cuisine in an exotic restaurant in the city. With Oman being just two and a half hours by flight from India, corporates from India are looking at it as a lucrative choice for their MICE activities. A lot of new projects are being developed for niche markets like MICE, weddings etc. Oman has been conducting roadshows in various Indian metropolitan cities to create awareness of its products and services. With visas, from India to Oman taking 4-6 working days and with a distance of less than 3 hours connecting it to India, this destination surely is a bumper experience for the travel trade and tourists alike. Ladies visiting the mosque are required to cover their head with scarf and are advised not wear short or sleeveless outfits. Men are also advised to be fully covered. The palace is an architectural marvel both in terms of its design and its location between the twin Portuguese forts Mirani and Jalali. Then stop at the Bait Al Zubair Museum. It consists of a concise collection reflecting the splendid Omani Heritage. The recently renovated and restored historic Omani town house at Bait Al Zubair enables you to step back in time and see the changing face of Muscat. Drive via the waterfront Corniche to visit the Muttrah Souq (markrt), which is one of the most popular souqs in the Middle East. The big and the bigger names in hospitality today are discerning about the kind of services they provide to corporate travellers to make their ‘reason to step out of office’ more memorable. MICEtalk decided to speak to Lakshman Ekanayake, Director/Chief Executive Officer, Aitken Spence Hotels & Resorts, Aitken Spence Hotel Managements (South India) Private Ltd. to find out more about Hotel Atithi, Puducherry, and why it could be one of the most languid experiences of MICE. 32

S

ituated in one of the quietest corners of India which is probably the only place in the country where you would still find a distinct French influence now; an influence that is completely overshadowed, by its European counterpart, in India’s historical texts, Hotel Atithi, Puducherry’s charm lies in the tranquility of its surroundings. According to Ekanayake, Hotel Athithi, Puducherry’s major advantage is its location. Close to the major attractions of the city, the property makes everything accessible, whether you are spiritually inclined or your mind meanders to luxury products; MICE in Hotel Atithi, Puducherry means being close to Auroville and also to the famous leather markets of South India. MICE here also means fun and games, like football on the beach or the opportunity to have a breakfast meeting on the white sand beach of Paradise Island. There are various things to look forward to as a

group decides to check into Hotel Atithi, Puducherry, for their meetings and conferences. Ekanayake informs, “An ostentatious welcome could be extended at the hotel and this could include a traditional ‘Aarti and tikka’, garlands, cold towel, welcome drink and in some special cases local folk music.” Groups checking into the hotel can also expect to find a hamper of fruits and also cookies, cake and chocolates, waiting for them as they check into their rooms. Speaking about rooms, if the property is being booked for a meeting/conference, groups can expect to negotiate for some rooms free of charge, if they have taken up a minimum of 10 rooms for their group members. Ekanayake goes on to inform that the hotel customises its packages for individual groups. So they might receive handmade jute bags (with the hotel logo) as a memento or a grand surprise party to remember.

“One of the delegates, during a conference, told the hotel people that it was the Boss’ Birthday. The hotel arranged balloon and cake during the lunch hour, something that the guests were not expecting,” he elaborates. They have also given their guests other memorable ‘takeaways’ like hand made incense sticks and aroma candles at subsidized rates, if there has been special request for such specific products. Special requests, informs Ekanayake, also meant organizing a special prayer at a nearby mosque during the Ramzaan month. Hotel Atithi, Puducherry is also famous for its theme lunches and the choice of cuisines falls in the wide spectrum of spicy street food to the meals for the royalty in the Nawabi khana. Some groups were looking for what Ekanayake describes as “Dakhini” food, whereas some preferred the more conventional Chinese fares. For each of these, a special ambience was created to make the meal a memorable one. Ekanayake informs that groups who want to explore Puducherry and its surroundings can be taken around by experienced guides if they make a request. He advises that such requests should be made in advance so that things can be planned and executed to the comfort of the guests. Shopping is an important part of any corporate offsite and the leather products of Puducherry are sought the world over. Recognising this fact, groups coming to Hotel Atithi, Puducherry are directed to the stores which purvey the most genuine leather products. Hotel Atithi, Puducherry, in short, shows a strong commitment towards making its guests’ stay an outstanding one. With banquet facilities to match, it definitely could be one of the most comfortable and memorable experience for our travelling corporates.

After a hectic schedule and a string of meetings during a corporate offsite, enroll in a session of Ashtanga Yoga that is targetted to de-stress, relax and unwind mental fatigue. In an interview with Kimberley Roberts, an expert in Ashtanga Yoga, MICEtalk explores how this yoga practice can counter this tedium and be beneficial for corporate groups and how they can become an essential part of MICE activities.

R

oberts has been authorised to teach the Ashtanga system by Mysore’s K. Patabhi Jois, widely acknowledged as this generation’s Master of Ashtanga yoga. “I enjoy the privilege of sharing this ancient Indian tradition that has been shared with the rest of the world and then brought back to India with modern insights! I have also taught many Indian groups in Bhutan and Hong Kong,” says Roberts setting the mood for our interview. Roberts believes that the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is incredibly rich and uses the ‘breath’ as a sort of power-cleaner for the subtle channels of the body when one goes through an increasingly challenging series of postures. This means that it helps balance the system such that one feels physically rejuvenated and mentally calmed. Over time, it can help balance emotions, increase mental focus and instill a strong sense of self confidence. “In essence, the entire path consists of learning to use breath and awareness practices to harness the full potential of mind. This obviously has many benefits for professionals,” says Roberts, adding that the awareness of breathing is applicable to everyone, every day. “The simple practice of connecting to breathing, of simply being aware of how posture affects your breath; how does one sit at a desk or how quickly one speaks can transform the quality of the day,” says Roberts. Roberts believes that Ashtanga yoga practice is ideal for busy executives because, “Once you learn the sequence, all you need is a yoga mat and a commitment to do it and you have a powerful exercise regimen and relaxation technique that you can take on the road wherever you go.” In today’s hectic work scenario, the stress of keeping up-to-date and yielding the best possible results often make it difficult to concentrate, resulting in deteriorating work performance. Employees often complain of severe back aches and other types of body aches which are primarily due to a fixed posture for a continuous time period.

The many benefits of Ashtanga Yoga for corporates include, improvement of posture for prevention of aches and pains, strength building for greater resistance to stress, increased productivity due to better health and wellbeing and breathing techniques to energise or calm the body and mind. Incorporating these exercises into a corporate outing also fosters team building, as people go through the exercises together as a group; it helps evolve other strengths which is essential for a harmonious and healthy working atmosphere. “Yoga and meditation practice aids concentration and stamina, in fact some people discover they can suddenly sleep more soundly after practising it. Many busy executives don’t get enough sleep; this one factor can have a profound impact on the quality of life,” elaborates Roberts. “I also offer tips on how to take moments throughout the day to check in and keep the body and awareness fresh, how to overcome the afternoon slump, how to work with back pain, how to better manage long flights and jetlag,” - An important tip for corporates today who cross continents to attend business meetings and conferences! Busting the myth that yoga requires a lot of space and time, Roberts informs that she had conducted ‘lunch break’ sessions at corporate houses for their employees. She narrates, “These

MICEtalk February 2012

sessions were simple classes focussing on breathing and movement, to help the participants reduce stress and relax more deeply after sitting at a desk all morning. The students said it helped them to breathe more deeply and to concentrate in the afternoons.” When asked about her experience as a yoga teacher for nearly two decades, Roberts said, “Do the practice every day and you will profoundly transform your life. I am constantly amazed at the power of this practice and at how quickly people reap the benefits. I don’t think I’ve ever, in 20 years, met anyone who did not gain something positive from one of my classes. This is why I love teaching this practice, because invariably, by the end of class, people feel better than they did at the beginning.”

The aptness of a venue comes from its ability to support an event in every way; Suntec Singapore with its access to 5 fivestar hotels is one of the most enterprising MICE experiences in the world today and has earned Singapore its reputation as Asia’s convention city. Nihalani adds, “It is recommended that organisers book about one year in advance for corporate meetings that are larger than 500 guests in size. Trade shows normally book 2-4 years in advance, and larger conventions tend to book between 3-5 years in advance.” Looking at the changing needs of its customers, the venue is expected to see a major revamp, with flexibility, functionality and convertibility being the main drivers for this change. The venue will see a S$ 180 million modernisation process, which will add more advanced technology to the existing facilities. The modernisation will include a two-storey interactive digital wall and a more modern façade.

After renovation and upgrading, the venue will operate from levels 2 to 7, with a grand entrance on level 3, which is to be served by express escalators. With a strong commitment for betterment of services and facilities, Suntec Singapore surely will live up to its reputation as Asia’s pride for many many years to come…

A

million moments, one world. Resorts World Manila has something for everyone, from business travellers to families in search of the ultimate holiday. The first integrated travel destination in the Philippines is home to three hotels - the 5-star Marriott Hotel Manila, the newly opened budget lodging Remington Hotel and its centerpiece, the luxury all-suite casino hotel, Maxims Tower. It also features the upscale Newport Mall which boasts of shops and boutiques for international luxury brands, high end cinemas, dining outlets and the Newport Performing Arts Theater, a 1,500-seat venue for local and international artists and productions. The premier holiday resort is Genting Hong Kong’s first foray in a land-based attraction. The global leisure, entertainment and hospitality enterprise Genting Hong Kong also owns the leading cruise operator Star Cruises. MICE will play an important role in helping the Genting group achieve its target of increasing arrivals to the Philippines. The destination that offers roundthe-clock entertainment will thus position Manila as one of the primary MICE destinations in Asia. Talking

MICEtalk February 2012

about tapping the MICE segment, Michael Goh, Senior Vice President-Sales, Star Cruises says, “The Philippines has enjoyed a steady increase in tourism. With an environment that is progressively becoming more conducive to business, the Philippines and Manila in particular, are fast becoming a sought-after MICE destination in Asia too. Thus, Resort World Manila aims to cater to the ever-growing demands of corporate guests.” According to Goh, being close to the airport is an added advantage for the new MICE destination. He feels, “RWM is located on the 25-hectare Newport City, just opposite the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City. This is expected to boost the arrivals of MICE and corporate group travellers.” The group also aims to position RWM as the ultimate stopover for the group or corporate traveller who is planning to visit Manila and then move on to the leisure destinations such as the islands of Boracay. With its positioning as Asia’s leading family destination and partnership with sister company Star Cruises - a success with Indian visitors - Resorts World Manila expects India to be one of its top three markets. To attract Indian clientele to Resorts World Manila, Genting Hong Kong has already started promoting Manila as a destination among Indian travellers. Outlining the importance of the India market for RWM, Naresh Rawal, Vice President Sales – India & South Asia, Star Cruises, confirms, “We are targetting leisure, FIT and MICE segments from India. The group has already started promotional activities in the country. We also organised the first FAM trip to Manila in January for the Indian travel trade to give them a first-hand experience of the destination and its offerings.” The group is keen to tap the Indian market. Rawal opines, “We have a lot of support from the trade in India and we look forward to working even more closely with them. Besides Mumbai and New Delhi, we will leave our mark in more Indian cities this year.” Along with some of the best facilities and organisational amenities to assist in making any event a success, RWM provides world class hotels. The resort offers accommodation facilities across all segments. Goh informs, “RWM’s Maxims Tower is the first in the country to offer all-suite accommodations, totaling 172 suites. Each suite is sumptuously furnished and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and celebrated personal butler services.” Marriott Hotel Manila is a 5-star lodging brand. The new addition is the value hotel, Remington Hotel, which provides quality services and accommodations within everyone’s reach. Talking about the facilities at the newly opened Remington Hotel, Rawal states, “It has 623 standard rooms and 89 units of serviced apartments. The standard rooms have two queen-sized beds, airconditioning, in-room Wi-Fi, in-room safety box, shower and bathroom, hot and cold water, power sockets on the wall, electronic key lock, telephone, luggage storage and daily housekeeping services.” In addition, the serviced apartments are equipped with one queen-sized bed, sofa bed, dining table, cooking facilities, microwave oven and refrigerator.

Offering a fashion hotspot for fashionistas and amusement destination for families, RWM’s Newport Mall is a four-level mall with premium entertainment for the whole family. Its iconic design and indoor piazza with a glass skyline promote an open space concept for a relaxed atmosphere. Apart from an array of entertainment opportunities that this integrated resort provides, one can also try wooing ‘Lady Luck’ in the casinos at RWM. Says Rawal, “RWM’s gaming facilities are at par with gaming capitals all over the world. RWM’s casino is the largest in the country with 1,000 slot machines and 300 table games to date. RWM also serves as the home to the newest and most exclusive lifestyle scene, Genting Club.” The Newport Mall is also home to the city’s newest stage, the Newport Performing Arts Theatre (NPAT). This 1,500-seat theatre has featured the grandest events, world class productions and more. Since NPAT first opened, it has staged the original RWM production Las Vegas-meets-Broadway spectacle Kaos and is currently running the well-loved musical ‘RWM presents: The Sound of Music’. So as the evening sets in and temperatures begin to drop, things begin to heat up in Resorts World Manila. In fact, by nightfall, the atmosphere in Resorts World Manila takes on a whole new light. From bars to restaurants, stage performances to indoor pursuits, there’s a hive of activity to be uncovered. So next time you are in Manila, make sure you stop by the RWM and let yourself be spoiled for choice.

national tourist office

Switzerland Welcomes MICE Michael Maeder, Managing Director India, Switzerland Tourism, talks to MICEtalk about his country’s offerings for MICE. Does the government support MICE activities in the country in terms of special packages, infrastructure development, etc.? We have no fixed menu of packages for MICE groups, we rather sell tailor-made things for the groups, depending on their size, duration of stay and needs. Switzerland is worldwide in the top league in regards to infrastructure. The Swiss Travel System transports you along scenic routes, over water and through the air to the mountaintop in no time. You can have your events in medieval castles, in brand new internationally awarded convention centres, trains & boats, caves, glaciers and cable cars gondola.

Does the tourism office provide any kind of visa assistance for group movement into Switzerland? We do inform the group planners about the visa application rules to make sure the application process happens as smoothly as possible. At the same time we’re also in constant communication with the Swiss authorities to optimise the process, especially for MICE movements. The final decision, as with all Schengen countries, lies with the embassy or the consulate.

Is there any special assistance that groups can expect at Switzerland airports? Like, special announcements in airports/aircraft after landing, faster immigration clearance? Zurich Airport is one of the most convenient airports one can arrive. In addition to this, the authorities at Zurich Airport are very effective and a specific fast track clearance is normally not necessary. Having said that, special wishes like announcements, VIP arrivals, etc. can be organised if needed.

Can you tell us (in rough figure or percentage) what is the proportion of Indian MICE travellers into Switzerland? We only just started with the active promotion of Switzerland as a MICE destination in India. So the

54

MICEtalk February 2012

overall share of MICE travellers from India into Switzerland is not high yet but that’s not of relevance for us, as the potential of growth counts. At this point the majority of movements are incentive groups, so there’s still a huge potential to get conventions and meetings to the many convention centres we have.

Have you organised a MICE trip for an Indian corporate house? To which city? What was your involvement with the trip? Did you organise any special experience for the group that you would want to talk about? We had over 3,500 delegates of Amway India in Switzerland last year and it was a huge success. They stayed in Zürich and explored Switzerland from there, namely Engelberg, Mt. Titlis, Interlaken and Jungfraujoch. We were in close contact with all parties in India and Switzerland to make sure everything runs smoothly and the guests have the time of their life in Switzerland – it was the first visit for most of them and they loved it.

How do you assist a group which decides to come to Switzerland for MICE activities? We support them in the choice of locations and activities. We make sure the guests find a nice welcome package on their arrival and we try to make the impossible happen.

What are the post event options for fun and entertainment available for groups? There are plenty – you have to look at Switzerland as one big natural entertainment park. In the morning you get your first skiing lesson, you climb up a mountain on a fixed rope or you do bungee jumping out of a cable car. Lunch on a boat, on a mountaintop or in a trendy city restaurant. The afternoon at leisure for shopping, cheese making or indulge in visit to a chocolate factory. The evening is reserved for the Gala Dinner – in a cave, on a village square, on a typical Swiss farm or any place you wish a nd this is just one day.
