WHAT’S ON TREND

Colour

Take a deep breath and visualise. Just what would your lounge or dining room look like with some added colour? Many people are afraid of colour, says Redmonds Furnishing and Flooring owner Chris Redmond, but being adventurous can pay off. “Especially when it’s your own home, you can be a little bit more individual,” Chris says. And for those embracing the trend towards neutral tones in flooring and furniture, the scene is set for adding boldness and variety. For those with dark furniture and flooring, this can lend itself to creating a vivid palette, or bringing in softening hues. A good way to introduce colour is to add a feature chair, a beautiful rug, dress up your furniture with cushions and throws, or be adventurous and go for a statement-wallpaper.

Wallpaper

One of the biggest trends under way is patterned, textured and coloured wallpapers and homeowners are not only using them for feature walls, but for whole rooms. “Although you do have to be reasonably confident,” Chris says. For

those with the courage, there are a wide range of daring designs on the market. They can bring a whole new element to your home’s social spaces, and set the tone for decorating the rest of the room. Colourplus Ashburton interior design consultant Jo Skilling says due to advances in modern technology, the choices of colour and design are enormous. Key trends include rich inspiring patterns that are slightly over-scale, metallic shimmers against a matt background, updated retro geometric designs, re-worked floral and botanical prints, marble and ombre. “It’s all part of the international swing away from minimalism, into glamour, luxury and pattern.”

Furniture

For tables and sideboards, a new look merging rustic and industrial elements is on trend for the coming season. This encompasses wood and steel, and many items have a Scandinavian element with clean lines and natural wood tones. Fabric lounges are back in, with twice as many buyers at Redmonds – about 40 per cent – going for the softer look they provide, over

contemporary classic leather, compared to last season. The softness is being offset by the shape, as couches with smart and sleek lines are sought after this season. And the “retro” look, reflecting

trends of the 1950s to 1970s, continues its popularity surge. Classic styles never lose their appeal, and so it is this season, as shoppers seek out those pieces which are guaranteed to add a touch of class to any interior.

Be bold with prints and patterns, say the experts.

Floors and curtains

Neutral carpet sets the scene for any type of décor, and mid to darker tones of grey have been popular for some time. Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra interior

consultant Carmen Rooney says it is a colour which is both modern and edgy, yet timeless and classic. And there was a new related colour trend emerging, that of grey-beige. “This brings a sense of warmth, and

it is neither feminine nor masculine, therefore will co-ordinate with every room,” she says. Wooden or wood-look flooring is on-trend, creating rhythm and flow with a home’s exterior.

Classic styles never lose their appeal, and so it is this season

“The unique rustic features of wideboard laminates and vinyl planks inject fresh, warm neutral tones,” Carmen says. Meanwhile, linen fabrics in curtains are giving a clean, classical look, while sheer fabrics are just as sought after, for their soft sleekness. Equally, the trend in wallpaper is ensuring there are plenty of complementary patterned and coloured curtains in all kinds of fabrics to match. Blinds are proving a popular choice in modern homes, either with or without curtains. Adding curtains softens the room, while blinds on their own have minimalistic appeal. They are effective sun screeners, can be automated and set from your  smartphone.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Rolling in style R

oller blinds today have a much wider range of colour and design than the roller blinds of old, and they also now have a variety of blinds for different functions. Sunscreen roller blinds make a definite difference in your comfort during the heat of summer by cutting down glare and heat. They protect your carpet, furnishings and artworks without completely blocking your views. Sunscreen fabrics are especially efficient at filtering visible light and UV rays (up to 97 per cent), thus increasing interior comfort and reducing reflections and glare on televisions or computer screens. Sunscreen blinds are also very useful in winter to block the glare of the low winter sun without blocking the light and warmth out completely, as drawn curtains do.

The transparency of sunscreen blinds is affected by the colour that you choose. Contrary to what you may automatically think, the darker the fabric the more you will see through the blind. The lighter the colour, the less. This is due to the sunlight reflecting off the lighter colours and making the holes in the weave seem

smaller. Another option is sheer roller blinds. With more transparency than a sunscreen they offer privacy from neighbours or the road without enclosing the room. Our range of sheer fabrics have been specifically chosen for New Zealand’s harsh UV conditions and are available in a large range of textures and neutral tones. If privacy at night is required, consider pairing the sunscreen or sheer roller with block-out rollers, curtains or a roman blind. All of our blinds are made to measure to fit your windows. This means they are customised according to your specifications regarding which side the control is on and whether it is front or back rolled. Depending on which fabric is chosen the roller blinds can be made up to 3m wide. For windows and doors that are wider than that, we

can use inline brackets to connect the blinds with one singular control. All rollers are fitted with co-ordinating bottom rail colours and shapes, which also match our large range of curtain tracks, rods and finials. For high or hard-to-get-to windows, automated blinds are now an easy and practical option. At Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra, we also have a huge range of curtain fabric on hand in all sorts of patterns, colours and textures, which can be made into curtains with various headings and linings to complement your blinds. Roman blinds can also be installed with the upgrade of a chain-controlled head rail for ease of use. So next time you are considering blinds for your home or office, come and discuss your ideas with the friendly team at Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra. 

We love cushions There is so much to love about cushions.

T

hey bring a practical element to your home, by making the couches, chairs and beds they rest on just that much more comfortable. And they can look as good as they feel. But how to choose the right ones? There is a lot to consider.

Size

Small pillows will look out of place on a large couch, unless they are positioned as part of an arrangement with larger pillows. Oversize pillows come into their own on bigger pieces of furniture, creating a cosiness and loungey feel. If your couch is of a modern style and compact, or you are looking for a cushion for an armchair, average size to small cushions will be most appropriate.

Quality

If you simply want a splash of colour in a drab bedroom or loungeroom, the quality of the fabric and filler may not be all that important to you. An advantage of buying cheap is it won’t matter if in a couple of months you tire of the look. However, if you are searching for cushions for a room which will be seen by many and used often, it’s best to make sure you shop for quality. Cushions with good filling will retain their shape for longer and high-grade

fabrics will survive wear and tear and look better in the long term.

Shape

Squares and rectangles are the most popular type of cushions. Squares are ideal for providing full-back comfort, while rectangles are good for supporting the lower back or neck. Bolsters can provide good lumbar support, and have the advantage of giving that hint of luxury and not slipping down when placed on leather couches. Round pillows

can soften up the straight lines of many furniture types, so don’t rule them out.

Patterns and colours

This can be the most difficult thing to choose when it comes to buying cushions. Window shopping can provide a good opportunity to get some ideas. You can then go home and visualise the cushions you like on your couches, chairs or bed. This is a good habit to get into and it’s amazing how you will probably

Extending your livin Patio or deck?

Patios

Patios are at an even level with the ground, and as they merge into a lawn or garden, a connection is created between the interior living space and the outdoor landscape. The surrounding garden becomes a key visual part of the area. A paver, tile, brick or concrete finish lends itself to the incorporation of other hard landscaping features such as birdbaths, fire pits, outdoor ovens, birdbaths and water features. Level ground with a good consistency beneath it is required. If you choose to install your own patio, take time to dig the area out and compact the base. This will ensure a beautiful patio area for years to come. Around a swimming pool, a concrete base may be required, and sealing the pavers will stop staining.

A

ttractive courtyard and verandah settings bring a whole new dimension to your home by extending its indoor living space. There are many things to consider as you weigh up whether to install a patio or deck. Both can look fantastic, it just comes down to what you want from your outdoor space. Every good plan starts with a vision.

ng space Decks

Decks are usually made of wood and elevated, giving a vantage point to view your yard, and creating a separation from the outdoors at the same time. You can make the most of the versatility of wood and install seating and storage into the design. Another advantage is it can be built over pavers or concrete which have long passed their use-by date, as long as the ground is solid. Building your own deck is the ultimate DIY project, but it is important to make sure you plan it from start to finish. Any deck over one metre must have a handrail attached, or you can build up the ground below with a garden. The size of the deck is important. A small deck may serve as nothing

more than a walking area to the outdoors. You might be better going with steps in the same material as your patio, leading on to the wider patio area. A slightly larger deck ,on the other hand, will be able to incorporate a nice armchair, sofa, or hammock, and potted plants and garden art. An even larger one can showcase an outdoor dining setting, settee area with coffee table, or spa area. With both patios and decks, it is important you consult with your builder or supplier on what are the best materials for our Mid Canterbury climate. Ordering the prettiest exterior tiles or fancy-looking decking online is tempting, but not all materials are created equal. Some will be better than others in our frost and heat-prone environment. 

Outdoor furniture The perfect complement to any outdoor space is a good-quality item of outdoor furniture.

B

ut before you go shopping this spring, take a look at what you already have. It may just be that the old wooden picnic table lurking in a disused corner of your yard could become a family entertainment centrepiece. A couple of coats of paint can transform even the most shabby of long-forgotten items when it comes to outdoor furniture.

Clean

Clean thoroughly. Bad cases of moss and mould can be treated with products from your hardware store. For milder cases you can mix up your own solution, using one part bleach to three parts water. Wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. For cleaning, use a stiff-bristled brush for scrubbing down, and rinse thoroughly with clean water and leave time to dry.

Sand

Sand to remove any old paint or wood stain. If the old finish is in fairly good condition, just roughening the surface is enough. If it is in bad condition, you may wish to take it back to the bare wood. Quality wood stain removers are available in hardware stores.

For all your Scaffolding and Edge Protection Requirements

Locally owned and operated

Prime

Priming is required if you are applying a lighter colour over a darker tone, if the wood is exposed, if there are large knots in the wood grain, or if any stains remain. If the old painted or stained surface is intact after sanding, you can skip priming.

Paint

One coat of stain will be enough if you have primed the surface. If you skipped the primer you may wish to apply a second coat. Stains can either enhance the natural colour of the timber, or they can bring in a new colour to brighten up your outdoor area. The more opaque the stain, the more colour choices you have. When painting is completed, allow the furniture to dry in a well-

ventilated area, but make sure that if it is outside, you have checked the weather forecast. A shower of rain could ruin your hard work, and if it is a windy day, dust and particles could  stick to the surface.

Wicker refers to a woven texture, and advances in modern technology have ensured a wide range of colours and shapes. Wicker brings the timeless look of cane furniture, but has far more versatility. S

ummer beckons, calling up thoughts of long days lounging by the pool, or gazing into a starry sky from the spa at night. And why spend money on a holiday, when you can create your own retreat at home.

Swimming pools

If you find yourself looking longingly at catalogues with swimming pools in them year after year as the heat of summer kicks in, maybe now is the time to get serious. The benefits of having your own swimming pool are numerous. Whether it’s the joy of water play with friends and family, or the physical benefits of swimming and aquaaerobic exercise, a swimming pool will ensure you fill your sunny days with fitness and fun. Additionally, a pool can provide a focal point in your backyard, and lend itself to a range of landscaping ideas. Factors such as access to your pool site, soil condition, size of the pool, and whether it will be heated, will affect the cost. For a fibreglass pool installed by a licensed pool builder, this can range from about $35,000 to $70,000 plus. Prices for a concrete pool start at a similar level, but have a higher upper limit, as they give you the freedom to pick the shape and size. Prefabricated aboveground vinyl-lined pools have lower installation costs. An important factor to consider

when you are looking at pool designs and types, is what sort of look you wish to create. The shape, colour and surrounds of the pool will need to fit in with the style of your home and garden. If you have a large section and want to create a dramatic effect, an infinity edge pool might take your

help you solve difficult site problems, provide the fairest deal and best pool value, as well as provide expert advice on all aspects of installing and maintaining your home swimming pool. Fencing comes in a variety of types and can be done in such a way to add to the look of the pool. The legal requirements under the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 dictate the minimum height for fencing around pools and spas must be 1.2 metres above ground level. The Ashburton District Council requires that all swimming pools, spa pools, and hot tubs are registered

with the council, and a building consent may be needed to install your pool.

Spas

What better way to relax after a big day than soaking in an outdoor spa. Spas can be bought in a huge range of sizes and shapes, with most models holding four or more people. Some even come with a swimming area, providing an extra-long section for swimming against a current. The price range is just as expansive, with standard models beginning in the four-digit range, extending up to over

$40,000 for deluxe models. There are a vast range of extra features you may wish to consider, and these can add to the whole spa experience. All water jets are not created equal; there are different types, and they feature in varying numbers, depending on the model. Multicoloured lights, drink coolers, sound systems and even pop-up televisions are among other features. Installing a spa automatically turns your outdoor space into a haven of relaxation. Spas have the advantage over swimming pools of being relatively small, so they can fit into most home-owners’ decks and patio

arrangements. A spa can be a social or solitary space, and the options for decorating around them are endless. Add candles, outdoor incense, a music system, planters and ambient lighting. Avoid the common mistake of embarking on a courtyard design project before planning what it will look like when it is finished. And make sure you don’t rush the hard landscaping elements such as paving and walls. These need to be built to a high standard to ensure they enhance your spa area and keep it looking stunning for years to  come.

What is solar PV? S

olar PV (solar photovoltaic) effectively uses the light from the sun and turns it into electricity, reducing your energy consumption and power bill at the same time. It does not have to be sunny for the panels to be working and they will continue generating electricity on an overcast day. There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the sun’s heat or lack of in New Zealand. Solar panels will actually be less efficient in extreme temperatures. The cost of installing a system is the same on an existing home as it is a new home and will only vary depending on size.

Why go solar?

Power prices have risen around 5 per cent a year since 2001 and look to continually rise for years to come. When you install a solar PV system you are essentially reducing your power bill for the next 25 plus years. A lot of consumers who have installed solar PV enjoy the feeling of reducing

their dependency on energy retailers and having to give them less money each month.

How to purchase the right solar system?

Quality product – The two main components of a solar PV system are panels and the inverter. The Panels generate the DC electricity and the Inverter converts it into AC electricity which we use in the home. The things to look for when purchasing, are quality panels and a quality Inverter. In order to select the right panels, it is recommended going with a well-known manufacturer. The reason for this is simple, it gives you some confidence the warranty will be honoured if required. Every manufacturer gives the same 25year performance warranty, but who stands behind it is the important part. If you hear the line “they are made in China but the head office is in Germany” be weary. Inverters are also a very important part of the system

and it is the usual you-get-what-youpay-for scenario. There is a very good New Zealand-made product available, but there are also several very high quality inverters being imported into New Zealand. Installation – When installing solar you are committing to a longterm purchase, therefore you need to ensure it is installed right the first time by competent installers. Solar installs are a specialised field and while all other systems may be working on day one, they may not in time to come due to poor installation and component failure. Compliance is proving a major hurdle with some installers of late and under scrutiny from the local network company there are multiple systems that are not being livened due to incorrect installation. Auric Energy has a great reputation with network companies and have undertaken a significant number of solar installs both big and small. System sizing – It is imperative that a solar system is sized correctly

for the consumer. Energy retailers do not pay huge amounts for the power that is exported to them, hence the need to reduce this figure where possible. Battery backup systems are now available, these ensure you maximise your self-consumption and also can help with power shifting. This means loading your batteries up at night with cheap night rate power and discharging through the day at the full tariff.

The future?

The future of solar is a bright one. With energy prices forever increasing and technology improvements to match energy sector changes, the viability is always on the improve. There are constant changes in the energy sector with monopolies and large corporates calling the shots. However, as the consumer you have the ability to minimise your reliance on such businesses and at the same time reduce your costs to them. 

s much as we all love lounging in the sun, it is important to have shade. Ultraviolet light peaks 11am to 3pm, even on overcast days, so it is best to stay under cover during these times. But that is not to say you can’t enjoy the outdoors. Why not beat the heat in style this summer, and upgrade your outdoor area with the addition of roof louvres, awnings, shade sails, or umbrellas?

Louvres

sails with a contemporary or creative design. They are versatile, and can be installed in a range of locations, providing shade at the swimming pool, sandpit or in your favourite garden area. Installed the right way, they can withstand strong winds. They are best removed in winter to avoid unexpected snow damage, and cleaned and stored away in a dry area.

Roof louvres are the deluxe version of outdoor shade creation, allowing you to let the sun shine in when you want it. They can be custom made to fit in with your patio or verandah. They are generally constructed of aluminium, so can be powder-coated the colour you want, ensuring they give maximum complement to your home and garden. They can be installed on wooden pergolas if you are wanting a rustic look, or on a concrete base for a more modern and sleek appearance. And they look perfect with aluminium framework in small gardens. Louvres can be installed vertically as well, giving wind and sun protection.

Umbrellas

Awnings

Retractable awnings similarly visually extend a building’s architecture into the outdoor space, and your supplier can help you choose a fabric to tie in with the colour scheme of your home. Primarily for shade, they can also help protect your home against rain, and might be ideal for that nor-west

side of the house! As well as adding a touch of style and pinache, awnings can help reduce fading of carpet and furniture and keep out the heat and glare. Drop blinds and screens are another alternative, they can close in a patio or verandah area, creating a pleasant outdoor space no matter what the weather.

Shade sails

Shade sails can be custom designed, manufactured and installed to your requirements. They add shape and structure to outdoor spaces, and come in a range of fabrics including traditional mesh, monofibres or PVC, with extensive colour choices. You can personalise your

Outdoor umbrellas are ideal around patio and barbeque areas, and have the advantage of providing the shade where and when you need it. There are varieties with built-in LED lights, and they come in a range of styles from wall mountable, tiltable to any angle, high wind performance, rotating, as well as centre-post and side-post designs. Cantilever umbrellas are not held up by a middle pole, and are instead hung from an arm attached to a pole at the side. This makes them more versatile, and they typically have a larger shade surface. 

ow about bringing some order to your life this spring, in the form of a garden with elements of structure and harmony. Clean contemporary lines and formal planting areas, with predetermined colour palettes, leading into feature rooms of colour, are among trends on the gardening front. Ashburton gardening specialist Mark Cherry says he is seeing a lot of people go for plant groupings. Planting many of the one type of plant can lend itself to a layering affect. A tall hedge line with a row of rhodendrons beneath can be set off by another layer still, courtesy of the curves and soft colours of agapanthas or the rectangular order of buxus. Nandinas and teucrium are popular with Mid Canterbury gardeners, their respective evergreen reddish and blue-grey hues providing colour yearround. Layering is not something reserved for larger sections, and the versatility of plants such as teucrium, buxus and some natives lend themselves to restricted spaces. Many people are going for garden beds with straight lines, particularly on smaller sections where this could give a spacious feel to the lawn area. A green and white palette can give a soft and classic look, while many other colours and random plantings can be reserved for more free-ranging areas of a landscape. The concept of “rooms of colour” is popular, and allows home owners to be creative and individual. At Mark’s home, he has a red rose climbing through a maple tree, and a clematis growing through a white-

flowered dogwood. Trees such as these are perfect for his smaller town section. Mark says whatever plantings are undertaken, it is important that home-owners draw up a plan, or employ a professional to do this. “It’s money well spent,” Mark says. TV3’s The Block web editor, Holly Roberts, agrees that new planting areas should be planned. When

undertaking a sketch of your area, home-owners can add in dining areas, water features, courtyards and different-sized plants, she says. “Do a few sketches with features in different areas.” And planting a large amount of the same type of plant and sticking to a colour palette is on trend. She says home-owners should work around a focal point and give consideration to

In-home music A

merican poet Maya Angelou once said: “Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances.” So it is in our homes, where music adds another dimension to the ambience a home decorator may wish to create. The latest technology is making this easier for people, as music individualised between indoor and outdoor living spaces can be controlled at the touch of a screen. You may want the tones of relaxing music in your garden at the same time the local radio station plays in the kitchen, and favourite playlists are filling bedrooms. Music can be part of an overall home automation system, on which your lighting, blinds, heating, security, television and gaming are all controlled.

Such automation gives home owners endless choices in how to control the music in their home. For example, they may set the outdoor speakers to a volume level of just 40 per cent, ensuring the neighbours never have a reason to call noise control. Likewise, speakers in their teenager’s bedrooms can be programmed to drop their volume

once it gets to 10pm at night. Getting out of bed in the morning can be made so much easier. Your favourite playlist or radio station can switch on in time with lighting in your bedroom or ensuite, and the volume can gradually increase as extra encouragement to get up, alongside the window blinds rolling up and letting the sun-shine in.

Blair Watson, managing director at ElectraServe, says such systems are proving popular with Mid Cantabrians. Many are at the stage of building their dream homes, and they want music to be a big part of their plans. A popular place for installing a central touch screen is the kitchen, but many people are choosing to control everything off their smartphones. Music lovers can access all their old vinyls, CDs and tapes, but the most popular way of accessing music is subscribing to internet music sites. The automated systems generally utilise ghost speakers for indoors. They are fitted into the ceiling and painted the same colour as the ceiling. They can be retro-fitted into older homes as well. 
