NZ farmers falling behind BY NADINE PORTER

NADINE.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The New Zealand primary industry became complacent when they were leading the world in agricultural practices, and are now falling behind other countries. Speaking at the Canterbury A and P Show yesterday, KPMG farm enterprise specialist Julia Jones said many agricultural businesses keep repeating the same practices as ten years ago and can’t work

out why they are getting the same result. She was scathing of industry sectors that were competing against each other in export markets instead of trying to work collaboratively – citing the red meat sector as an example. “Why are we going up into China as separate companies and driving the price down?” At a special breakfast meeting yesterday with many agricultural leaders including the Minister of Primary Indus-

tries Nathan Guy and Federated Farmers president William Rolleston, Ms Jones outlined the results of a recent forum KPMG conducted with emerging primary sector MPs. “In essence we need to hold a single vision and focus across the industry, and learn the true value of genuine collaboration.”

Nanny blamed

Gwen Stefani reportedly split from her husband Gavin Rossdale because he had a three-year affair with their Australian nanny. Stefani discovered explicit texts between rocker Rossdale and their long-time nanny Mindy Mann in February, according to US Weekly. She allegedly found nude photos of Mann on the family’s iPad after it synced with Rossdale’s phone. The couple announced they were getting a divorce in August after 13 years of marriage. Rossdale isn’t the only celebrity caught having an affair with the family nanny. Actor Ben Affleck cheated on his wife Jennifer Garner with the nanny, as did Jude Law when he was briefly engaged to Sienna Miller. Ethan Hawke ended up tying the knot with the nanny he had.

INSIDE TODAY Moon gag goes viral It started as a visual gag involving the moon, a radio telescope and bit of Photoshopping – but it turned into an internet hit with more than 2 million views and counting. Kerikeri man Chris Pegman’s usual hobby is astrophotography, capturing the night sky in hugely detailed panoramic images. Last Friday, however, he was having a bit of fun with a couple of photos. One was a night-time panorama of a radio telescope at Warkworth, taken last year for an online photo challenge; the other was a shot of the “supermoon” – when the moon is at its closest point to the Earth, making it looker bigger than usual – taken from Kerikeri a few months ago. He combined the two so the moon was resting perfectly in the radio dish and uploaded the result to his Flickr page and an online photo competition called 500px.

Hundreds run to honour Vidal

Newsroom Call 03 307-7958

Hundreds of runners have taken to the streets of Sète in the South of France to pay homage to Laurent Vidal – coach and fiancé of Kiwi triathlon star Andrea Hewitt. The French Olympian, 31, died in Gigean, near Sète, of a suspected heart attack in his sleep on Wednesday (NZ time). French newspaper Midi Libre reports 250 ran the streets in response to Vidal’s brother’s call out on social media. The call was posted on Wednesday, a little after 3.30pm Wednesday (Thursday NZ time) in France. An hour and a half later they took to the street along rue de Canaris in the Barrou quarter to do a running tour of the town.

Who’s intriguing people is back Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull joins A-list Aussie celebrities including Rebel Wilson and Chris Hemsworth as Who magazine’s Most Intriguing People. “Everyone in there is intriguing for their own reasons,” editor Shane Sutton told AAP. “It’s an incredibly diverse portfolio.” Sutton said Turnbull’s push to power was an intriguing political move. “We tried to get a sense of the person behind the scenes – family life, what he’s like at home, even what he watches on TV,” Sutton said. Turns out Turnbull’s favourite show is House of Cards, the political drama where actor Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood schemes his way to becoming US president. Other notables to make the top 40 list include Lara Bingle Worthington, Ruby Rose and Sydney siege survivor Joel Herat. This year marks a return to the standalone Most Intriguing Issue.

Women MPs protest Kiwi politicians have hit international headlines yesterday, after a number of female MPs revealed their history of sexual abuse in protest against Prime Minister John Key saying Labour “backed rapists”. MPs on the Opposition side revolted after Speaker David Carter ruled that Mr Key did not need to apologise for his remarks. The Prime Minister remained defiant, pointing to newly-released offence statistics to back his accusation that the Labour Party was supporting rapists, murderers and other criminals on Christmas Island detention centre. It prompted a mass protest by women MPs in the Labour and Green parties – four of whom revealed that they had personally been abused – on Wednesday. And the spat has been reported on by international media, including The Guardian, NBC, Time, The Daily Mail The Telegraph, The Independent and Vice.

■ POLYTECH MERGER

Community to be consulted By RuBy HaRfield

Ruby.h@theguaRdian.co.nz

The Ashburton community will be closely consulted over a merger between Aoraki Polytechnic and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. It was announced on Tuesday that both institutions would merge to create a new tertiary education provider for Canterbury from 2016. Aoraki Polytechnic would be disestablished and all assets, staff and buildings would be transferred to Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) on December 31. It would trade under the name CPIT Aoraki until a new name is launched next year. During a tour of the Aoraki Polytechnic Rural Training Farm in Timaru with Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce and executive and board members of both institutions yesterday afternoon, it was confirmed that Ashburton would benefit from the merger. Mr Joyce said the new institution would mean all Aoraki campuses, including Ashburton, would be able to offer more courses. The focus would be ensuring the courses available would suit each region’s needs. CPIT Aoraki would incorporate modern learning and enable students to study from the region they lived, he said. Courses best suited to Ashburton would draw from the

$50,000 lost in scam The New Zealand Fire Service has reportedly lost about $50,000 in an offshore scam. A report by 3 News suggests the scam involved something being bought from Turkey, and an “urgent investigation” by the Fire Service is currently under way into how it occurred. Fire Service national commander Paul Baxter told the broadcaster it was taking further advice on the issue and said it was “very disappointing”. The Fire Service said it had lost around $50,000. - NZME

CPIT chairwoman Jenn Bestwick said they would be working closely with the Ashburton community to find out what courses they wanted and needed.

This would include discussions with employers, stakeholders and students over the next few months. There would also be the opportunity to provide higher level courses, which previously had mostly been offered out of Christchurch. “That’s going to be a big part of

the focus.” Aoraki chairwoman Janie Annear said Aoraki Polytechnic’s financial situation meant if it had continued on its own the quality of learning would have dropped considerably and it might not have lasted another five years. The merger would ensure longterm high quality education.

Haast quake

Council looks to save on electricity bills

More than 100 people reported feeling a 4.5 magnitude earthquake within 10 minutes of it striking near Haast at 9.03am yesterday. It was pinpointed at 15km deep and 45km east of Haast. The Greymouth Star spoke to a number of Haast residents who did not feel it; many of those who reported it on the GeoNet website were from Otago, and even as far away as Dunedin. GNS classified the quake as ‘strong’. It was followed by a magnitude 4 earthquake at 9.49am, in the same location and 15km deep. - NZME

It’s not only private consumers who are chasing the best power prices; the Ashburton District Council is also on the hunt for the cheapest power in town. Council service delivery manager Neil McCann has reviewed the options in the market and believes he has found a new supplier deal that could save ratepayers

thousands of dollars. The new deal, with an as yet unnamed provider, will be signed off by the council later this month. He’s also been chasing down costs at the district’s EA Networks Centre. During its first three months in business, the centre logged pow-

er bills that were around $50,000 each month. He’s commissioned an audit of the centre to look at every area of power consumption and knows that when this has been completed bills are likely to dip. “We had to get this up and running first and we did that in the coldest months of the year.

■ CHRISTMAS ISLAND RIOTS

Authorities mum on prison Authorities are keeping hush over which prison Kiwi detainees - who might be facing prosecution over their alleged involvement in the Christmas Island riots - have been sent to. Previous estimates that the riot damage bill would total $1 million have now been upgraded to a whopping $10 million. Footage emerged following the incident shows trashed rooms, smashed windows, corrugated iron walls and roof peeled back as well as scorch marks from fires. Detainees broke into a medical clinic, removing drugs, as well as equipment from a gardening storage area, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said. Seven men - including five New Zealanders, a Tongan and an Afghan - in-

volved in the unrest had been transferred to a Perth prison overnight, AAP reported. “These people will have to pay for the damage they have caused through the criminal courts,” he said. A spokeswoman at the office of Mr Dutton said the men had been transferred to Perth, but did not respond to requests about which facility the men were at. Previous reports stated all seven men taken from the island overnight in handcuffs said they were New Zealanders. It was also revealed this week former Kiwi war hero Lance Corporal Ngati Kanohi Te Eke Haapu, known as Ko, is being held in solitary confinement at a high-security prison in Perth for his involvement with a motorcycle club. - NZME

The pool will always be the biggest cost to run, but if we can do something that will see pumps and equipment kick in at different times of the day it will help,” Mr McCann said. The audit will also cover other council operations to identify areas where electricity costs can be reduced.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Reviews on council radar By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Merging its tourism and economic organisations might not be at the top of the Ashburton District Council’s to-do list, but reviewing the way they delivered their services was certainly on its radar, says chief executive Andrew Dalziel. Christchurch City Council has tagged a merge of its tourism and economic arms as likely but the Ashburton situation was quite different, in that one of the two organisations, Experience Mid Canterbury, was already a council controlled organisation. Grow Mid Canterbury is a council funded organisation, Mr Dalziel said.

The council has an obligation under the Local Government Act to review the delivery of all services and that review would include both Grow Mid Canterbury and Experience Mid Canterbury, he said. “When we do that, we’ll be cognisant of what’s already in place.” The council signalled in its October council agenda as an item of in-committee business that under section 17A it would review the delivery of both its economic development and tourism organisations. In the November service delivery agenda, again as an in-committee item, it listed Grow Mid Canterbury’s service level agreement as up for discussion.

Mayor Angus McKay said when it came to reshaping any organisation that was run or funded by the council he was motivated by achieving whatever was the best way of delivering those functions for the district. Local authorities were constantly reviewing the way they did things, he said. The council had already changed the way it administered its tourism business with Experience Mid Canterbury now a council controlled organisation (CCO). Grow Mid Canterbury was a council funded organisation but there was no reason why it too could not become a CCO, Mr McKay said.

The council had agreed to fund Grow Mid Canterbury at its current level for the next three years, but it could review its function, the same as any other council funded organisation, at any time, Mr McKay said. Christchurch City is considering merging tourism and economic development into one structure to create one cohesive group to work towards boosting the city’s tourist numbers. Mr McKay said he would watch with interest the way that process unfolded. “I’m always interested in looking at what our neighbours are doing to see what can work better for the community of Ashburton,” he said.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand but a large number of Kiwis are still failing to be sun-smart in the summer months. A survey conducted by the Southern Cross revealed 51 per cent of parents admitted their children had been sunburnt during the sunny months. Over half of these children were sunburnt while at the beach or at a park. Southern Cross health society chief executive Peter Tynan said the statistics were a worry as New Zealand had some of the highest level of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. - NZME

Mystery car found Police have found the mystery blue car believed to have been involved in a fatal crash that left three gang members dead on Saturday. Three three died when their car plunged down a bank into the Mohaka River near Wairoa. A fourth man survived the 150m fall, but was seriously injured. Police appealed for information about the possible involvement of a second vehicle and Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Greville said it was found yesterday in Raupunga and was being sent to Gisborne for forensic examination. “At this stage we cannot confirm that it was involved, but a forensic examination will help us determine if it played a part in the crash,” he said. Police were trying to find out who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. “We are in the process of speaking to numerous people in the Raupunga area so hopefully some new information will come to light.” - NZME

■ MID CANTERBURY RURAL WOMEN

Knitted safe houses in time for Christmas By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

It’s been knitting needles and wool galore for Mid Canterbury Rural Women members as they crafted items for the Mid South Island Women’s Refuge Family Safety Service. In honour of Mid Canterbury Rural Women’s 90th birthday the group set out a challenge for members to knit 90 miniature safe houses. Superseding that, a total of 96 were knitted in different shapes, sizes and colours. President Sandra Curd said some members even chose to go as far as to embroider their safe houses with floral decorations and gardens. Lynford member Marion Dent said they took about three nights to knit, stuff and sew, but it was worth it. The group decided to donate the soft toys to the Mid South Island Women’s Refuge Family Safety Service. Manager Dawn Rangi-Smith said they were greatly appreciated and would most likely be given out to children moving into safe houses, but came in perfect time for White Ribbon Day on November 25 and Christmas. “They’re all shapes and colours … it reflects society, everyone is different,” she said. “We’re just extremely grateful that they thought about us … we are so well looked after by women’s organisations in Mid-South Canterbury.”

Knitted safe houses were handed over yesterday from Mid Canterbury Rural Women to the Mid South Island Women’s Refuge Family Safety Service. ■ CANTERBURY A&P SHOW

■ RUGBY HISTORY

Swag of local ribbons

NZ rugby history unearthed

By Michelle NelsoN

Michelle.n@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury cattle breeders had accumulated a swag of ribbons after day two of the Canterbury A&P Show. Harvey Rhodes’ two-yearold lowline bull Edsal Titus was awarded Supreme Junior Champion Lowline from a big turnout of the breed. The honour came of the back of the young bull’s ealier coup at the Ellesmere A&P Show where he took the Ellesmere Shield for the best junior bull across all breeds – making history as the first lowline to get his name on the trophy. “It was a pretty good result really,” Mr Rhodes said. Mr Rhodes, who together with his wife Sally runs the Ashburton Motor Lodge, breeds lowline cattle as a hobby on a leased block of land in the Dromore district. Lowline cattle were bred down from Angus, and have remained

isolated from outside genetics for 50 years. The result is a compact beef breed, about 30 per cent smaller

than traditional Angus cattle. The breed is popular with lifestyle block farmers, but is also gaining traction in the dairy industry,

where bulls are in demand to put across heifers. An animal breed by Mr Rhodes recently returned 73 per cent meat yield, whereas the average beef carcass yields 62 per cent. Edsal Titus was sired by another Mid Canterbury bull out of Gordon Guthrie’s Ashmore stud, and leased by Mr Rhodes. At last year’s Canterbury A&P Show, the Rhodes’ heifer Edsal Alana was runner-up to the supreme champion of the breed. Mr Guthrie was also at the show yesterday with his champion lowline heifer Ashmore Chantilly, and a cow with five-weekold Ashmore Scooter at foot, who was attracting a lot of attention. “The kids love him,” Mr Guthrie said. The Gilbert family’s Glenella Stud jersey cattle also performed well in the dairy section, with a line of ribbons decorating the stalls, including a number of champions.

Biosecurity beagles celebrate 20 years of service By NadiNe Porter

nadine.P@theguardian.co.nz

The Canterbury A&P Show went to the dogs yesterday as the Ministry of Primary Industries marked 20 years of using dogs for biosecurity protection at our borders. Minster for Economic Development Steven Joyce joined Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy and local MP Jo Goodhew in cutting a cake to celebrate the milestone birthday. With five million travellers into New Zealand annually the dogs have played a vital role in keeping borders safe and have intercepted up to 90 per cent of banned items. Total dog numbers will grow to 60 once another 20 graduate in December. The ministers were also present to launch the updated Building Natural Resources chapter of the Governments Business Growth Agenda – a framework developed to build a more productive and competitive economy. Mr Joyce said improving the quality of our natural resources was the key to sustaining economic growth in our primary sectors right across regional New Zealand. “The challenge is how we both improve the productivity from our land and water resources while also protecting and sustaining the environment.” The revised chapter sets out 39 active projects including new projects to promote farm systems change, develop regional aquaculture opportunities and develop ways to speed up the delivery of a predator free New Zealand. Mr Joyce said the Government was committed to using new scientific techniques and innovations alongside infrastructure developments in information technology and water storage to

achieve both productivity and environmental gains. He also emphasised his Government’s commitment to water storage and said he believed the debate around water storage has moved in favour of quality water storage solutions that contribute to improving environmental outcomes. “Our overall goal is within 10

years we go from being a broadly prosperous small economy to one of if not the most successful small economies in the world.” To do that New Zealand would need increased global market access, increased investment and the right infrastructure. Minister of Primary Industries Nathan Guy said the Central Waters Plains water storage scheme

was an example of sustainable natural resources working towards reducing our environmental footprint. “It’s a big scheme that’s going to pump $1 billion of economic growth into your region and we know there are significant environmental benefits in this project by taking the pressure off groundwater aquifers.”

Under the kitchen lino in a Canterbury house, a piece of the past has been waiting to be found. Methven woman Cheryl Tallon was renovating a house in the small South Island town when she unearthed an old newspaper clipping under the kitchen flooring - a notice heralding the engagement of Margaret McLay and Donald McCaw. The pair would later become parents of the legendary All Blacks captain who has been dubbed “the greatest All Black of all time”. Dr Tallon posted a photo of the memorabilia on Richie McCaw’s Facebook page yesterday, where it has gathered more than 100 likes. The notice is short and sweet, reading: “The engagement notice is announced between Margaret, daughter of Mr and Mrs H. B. McLay ‘Stonylea’ No.8 RD, Ashburton, and Donald, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. McCaw, ‘Windsor Downs’, Hakataramea.” It was in a line-up of at least 10 other engagement notices, in an old copy of The Press from Saturday, April 28, 1979. Dr Tallon, a Methven GP, wrote on Facebook that she was renovating when she discovered the newspaper gem under the kitchen lino. She thought it was Richie McCaw’s parents and decided to share it. “I didn’t spot it actually, my partner did. We’ve been renovating a house in Methven for the past year, an old 1920s house, and when we pulled up the layers of lino in the kitchen, we found a heap of old newspapers. This one was 1979, but we found lots from the 30s as well. “It was really cool looking at them, and we were just having a look through them and he pointed it out. “I thought he was having me on, but he wasn’t.” Her partner, Nick Ballagh, is a “born and bred” Cantabrian, from Windwhistle, and recognised the names of the star skipper’s parents immediately, she said. “I was stoked, totally stoked,” she said. She added: “My friends and work colleagues think it’s pretty cool ... they’re very excited by it.” Dr Tallon had been sitting on the unusual memorabilia for around a year, but rediscovered it in her home on Wednesday night and decided to put it on Facebook. There had yet to be a response from McCaw, she said, but the couple would be happy to give the newspaper to him or his parents. “His parents are very welcome to have it,” she said. There was a rumour McCaw would be visiting Methven in a couple of weeks, she said. “He can drop into the medical centre and have a cup of tea,” she laughed, and she could give him the clipping. - NZME

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Forging bonds with China By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Relationships forged between Ashburton and two cities in China could have significant trade and tourism benefits for the Ashburton District, says mayor Angus McKay. He has just returned from a week-long visit that cemented ties with the district’s sister city Puyang and established a new bond with Xianyang. “It was a very worthwhile trip in that we built bridges and showed what the Ashburton District has to offer – clean blue rivers and land that is safe to grow crops on because they need co-operation in helping feed their people into the future,” Mr McKay said. The Ashburton delegation was made up of Mr McKay, Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley and Willy Leferink from Federated Farmers. It included Ashburton woman Ling Mee Shing. Travelling with their own Mandarin speaker meant the Ashburton delegation was able to take full advantage of all meetings, he said. Mr McKay said his role during each of-

ficial engagement was to speak with an overview of potential relationships between China and Ashburton while Mr Leferink spoke about co-investment and Mr Brawley about training and economic development. “We have opened doors with another city now, Xianyang, and an agreement on this will go to council. “We met with the mayor and exchanged letters to work together to further co-operation between the two towns,” Mr McKay said. Xianyang is home to dairy company Fineboon that is a partner with the New Zealand Dairy co-operative, developers of a goat milk factory at the Ashburton Business Estate. Ashburton was the only place in New Zealand that both Xianyang and Puyang had forged relationships with, he said. “And that means, if they wish to open the door to New Zealand they will come through the Ashburton mayor’s office.” Mr McKay said he had invited the mayor of Xianyang to come to Ashburton for the opening of district’s goat milk factory next year.

Danielle Philip, 17, of Ashburton was among youngsters who got to shop for high quality art at a low price at the Ashburton Art Gallery on Wednesday. The one-day Muka Print Exhibition was in town. It tours New Zealand annually, and features original signed prints by wellknown artists. The exhibition gives five to 18-year-olds the opportunity to buy art, with no adults allowed in the exhibition space.

Danielle has been a regular since the age of seven, and yesterday bought two works to add to her collection. All prints were $70 each. Magda Van Gils came up with the concept over 40 years ago, and tours the exhibition with her husband Frans Baetens. The couple this year brought five larger lithographs for art gallery visitors to vote on, and would be donating the one which received the most votes.

■ EDUCATION

Overpaid staff told to pay up Teachers and other school staff overpaid by the Novopay system will be referred to debt collectors if they don’t co-operate with efforts to get the outstanding $1.8m back. Minister responsible for Novopay Steven Joyce announced the move yesterday, after the use of debt collectors was suspended in March 2013 and those who owed less than $100 had debts written off. That was amid an “unacceptable error rate” with the then beleaguered pay system, but its shortcomings are sorted. “The payroll system has been working properly now for some time,” Mr Joyce said. With its error rate below 0.25 per cent, he said it was sensible to now look at how overpay-

ments were managed. “The vast majority of staff who received overpayments have been happy to work with us to sort that out.” So far more than 80 per cent of overpayments have been either fully repaid - $22.7 million - or are under repayment arrangements - $1.9m. But 1960 school staff owing $1.8m have made no effort to return their excess taxpayer money. Mr Joyce said the education sector would be briefed about the process. Those owing money would be contacted and given time to respond or make a repayment arrangement. If that didn’t happen, debt collectors would be called upon. - NZME

OUR VIEW

Forging bonds for the future Sue Newman

ACTING EDITOR

I

t might have seemed a lowkey event, unnecessary even, but the whirlwind trip a team of locals have just made to China could have very positive spinoffs for the future of the Ashburton District. In the short term, the effect will be zero; the only difference will be Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay when he next checks his bank statement. He was one of a three-member team that headed to China last week to fly the flag for the Ashburton District. He footed the bill for his share of the trip and you have to admire him for that. Yes, he might have spent a week off-shore, but that week will have been all about business, all of benefit to ratepayers, few for the mayor himself. The sceptical will always question the worth of business or civic delegations making overseas trips – suggesting they’re little more than a junket – but ask most people who’ve been part of similar trips and they’ll tell you they’re all about meeting, greeting, smiling and saying the right thing. For Ashburton, China is a natural business partner at the most basic level – they want food, we grow food. And while they might logically look to New Zealand as their food bowls of the future, their focus would never fall on Ashburton unless strategic alliances had been struck. The mayor and his team have struck those with two cities, making it logical that when their businesses are looking for partners in New Zealand, the light will shine on us. Doing business in China is about building relationships and that’s what this delegation has done, built bridges for what may come. The spin-off will also come in tourist numbers. The growing Chinese middle class is taking to travel with gusto, flights from China to New Zealand are growing in number and we’ll be in their fighting with the rest of New Zealand for their spending power. Like most travellers, they’ll go to the places they’ve heard about, the places that strike a chord of recognition. In a country that counts its travellers in millions, if we snare even a miniscule slice of their tourism business, the rewards will come across our district.

YOUR VIEW Petitions The Ashburton District Council’s recent decision to replace its outdated petitions policy was made to strengthen democracy for Ashburton residents, not diminish it. The previous petitions policy was only one sentence long. It said: “Council does not support the concept of binding petitions but will consider all requests on their merits regardless of the number of signatures received.” The council’s stance remains exactly the same. The only difference is that it is encouraging people to be involved in council business in a variety of ways, through better resources on its website. See Have Your Say at www.adc. govt.nz Every petition to the council will continue to be welcomed, acknowledged and considered. Darryl Nelson Deputy mayor

e made it to our hotel in the heart of Chinatown after another bumpy and delayed flight to JFK Airport. We then endured over an hour of lining up for a taxi. That airport is a mess when it’s busy, with Ubers and taxis scrapping for pick-up space. Once again we went for a reasonably priced hotel and, just like the one in San Francisco, this one was clean and tidy and the staff were friendly and helpful. Chinatown is cool, the shopping is fun with all the bartering, but some of the fishy smells first thing in the morning can be a bit tough on the senses. Our first full day in the Big Apple was spent collecting our New York pass and sightseeing. The pass gives you entry to over 90 attractions in the city and free hop-on hop-off buses. I highly recommend it for those doing some hard-out sightseeing in NYC. We paid our respects to John Lennon at the spot where he was shot, the Dakota Building, and had a wander through Central Park. We also discovered that nobody does pizza like New York! Day two was a big day. We were on like King Kong (translation, went to the top of the Empire State Building), biked over the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge, did a tour of the Radio City Music Hall, went to the 9/11 Memorial, hit the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Centre) and finished with a night bus tour of Brooklyn. The Radio City Music Hall took our breath away (well that and too much pizza). It is a place steeped in history, so many superstars have performed there and it’s the venue for the Grammy Awards most years. The 9/11 memorial visit was full of mixed emotions. From a sombre wander through the museum to a reflective calm feeling when standing by the memorial pools. It is a must do! I don’t think you NEED to go to the top of both the Empire State and the Rock unless you did what we did and went to one during the day and one at night. During the day the sheer size of the city blows your mind, but the beauty of the lights at night is even better. Day 3 was a bit more laidback with a visit to the Statue of Liberty, a tour around the amazing Madison Square Garden, shopping in Chinatown and then

on the telly and the atmosphere was sensational. Our final day in New York was spent on and around Times Square (to be fair we went there every day anyway), the buzz around that part of New York is like no other place in the world. The locals call it the centre of the Universe and let’s face it, Americans never exaggerate eh? In Times Square you can pick up discounted Broadway tickets, unfortunately Lion King was sold out so we had to settle for Phantom of the Opera. Wow! Mind blown again! Then we had dinner at a gorgeous restaurant in Little Italy. What a fitting climax to our visit to the city that never sleeps. We would go back to New York tomorrow, it is an unreal city, easy to get around and with a cop on every second street corner, it feels safe. A definite addition to your bucket list! In brief Limited Bali flights Virgin Australia will continue to fly people out of Denpasar Airport but has cancelled flights into Bali until later today at the earliest. Jetstar had stopped all yesterday’s scheduled flights but said it was planning to operate 11 recovery flights during daylight hours. “As Mt Rinjani continues to erupt and flying conditions remain unpredictable in the days to come, our priority is to bring guests home from Bali, rather than attempting to fly more guests in and having to turn around the flights,” Virgin Australia said in a statement. “Passengers who have not yet commenced their journeys to Bali (have been offered) the option of travelling to a number of alternative destinations.” - AAP

Egypt ‘won’t let lights go out’ Egypt’s president has declared that the “lights will not be going out in Sharm el-Sheikh”, as he visited the Red Sea resort hit by suspension of foreign flights after a Russian airliner crash western states suspect was caused by a bomb. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi yesterday said his visit was a message of support for investors and businesses in Sharm el-Sheikh and Egypt’s other main Red Sea resort of Hurghada. Egypt said it stood to lose $US280 million ($NZ427.63 million) a month from the halt in Russian and British flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, the two countries accounting for two thirds of foreign visitors to the beach and diving holiday destination. Thousands of Russian and British tourists have already left, and several other European countries

also suspended flights following the October 31 crash which killed all 224 people on board. The plane broke up at high altitude and some national authorities have said it may have been hit by a bomb explosion. “The lights will not be going out in Sharm el-Sheikh or Hurghada while we are here,” Sisi told reporters. “We will support them in facing (the situation) we are in.” Egypt’s tourism revenue is a vital source of foreign currency in a country which has seen its foreign cash reserves dwindle sharply during years of political instability following the 2011 uprising which overthrew Hosni Mubarak. Last year, nearly 10 million tourists visited, far less than the 14.7 million in 2010. Officials had hoped for modest growth this

year but the Sinai plane crash, coming at the start of the peak Red Sea winter holiday season, is likely to reverse that. Sinai Province, an affiliate of the hardline Islamic State group, says it brought down the plane. It has been waging an insurgency in Sinai, but had so far focused its battle against security forces in the north of the peninsula, hundreds of kilometres from Sharm el-Sheikh on its southern tip. Alarmed at the potential scale of losses, Egyptian officials have expressed frustration with Western governments for suggesting the Russian Airbus A321 had been targeted by Sinai-based militants before crash investigators reach their findings. “So far there is no proof of anything,” Sisi said. A senior Russian official said

that Moscow’s decision to suspend flights was unlikely to be reversed soon. “It’s for a long time. For how long - I cannot really say, but I think that for several months, minimum,” Sergei Ivanov, the head of the presidential administration, was quoted as saying by RIA news agency on Tuesday. Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazou said he would seek to make up for the loss of international business by encouraging domestic tourism, as well as encouraging Gulf Arab visitors and easing visa requirements for tourists from North Africa. He said he planned a $US5 million public relations campaign to promote Egypt in Britain and Russia and win back tourism from those countries. - Reuters

■ RUSSIA

DNA tests confirm Russian tsar’s remains New DNA tests on the remains of the last tsar Nicholas II have confirmed their authenticity, Russia says, after exhuming them in a bid to end a dispute with the Orthodox Church. The remains of Nicholas II, his wife and five children, shot by the Bolsheviks in 1918 and hastily buried in the provincial city of Yekaterinburg, are still disputed by the Russian Orthodox Church and some of the family’s descendants. The latest tests, which are still ongoing, could finally lead to the burial of the whole family with

full funeral rites. The influential Church has declared all the slain Romanovs saints - but has not recognised any of their remains, insisting there are still doubts over their authenticity despite DNA testing by Russian and international scientists. The bodies of Nicholas’ heir Alexei and his daughter Maria, found in 2007 - separately from the rest of the family’s remains discovered more than a decade earlier - remain unburied, stored in the State Archive. Russia’s government ordered

the latest tests on the Church’s request as it attempts to finally bury Alexei and Maria. This time, the Church has been allowed to closely supervise the process. Tests on the skulls of Nicholas and his wife Alexandra “once more show the authenticity of the ‘Yekaterinburg remains,’“ the Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement yesterday. “The Church will weigh all the information we have and take its decision in good time,” senior Church spokesman Vsevolod

Chaplin responded, in comments to Interfax news agency. Samples from Nicholas’s jaw bone and a vertebra match DNA from a bloody shirt he wore in a previous assassination attempt, investigators said. The DNA from his skull, which had not previously undergone testing for ethical reasons, also matches that of other bones tested earlier. Tests on the skull of Nicholas’ wife Alexandra matched DNA of descendants of Britain’s Queen Victoria, her grandmother. - AFP

The Australian federal government has welcomed a landmark agreement on the use of satellites to track flights, as part of a concerted effort to avoid a repeat of the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. More than 160 nations taking part in talks in Geneva have struck a deal that is expected to improve civilian flight-tracking systems, with a frequency band previously used to transmit signals from aircraft to terrestrial stations to be enabled to send transmissions from aircraft to satellites. Flight tracking systems had in the past typically relied on ground-based radars. - AAP

Royals love Sydney They may not be Australia’s favourite royal pair but that didn’t stop thousands of people from eagerly catching a glimpse of the future king and his wife in Sydney’s CBD. Some called “three cheers for Charles” as the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall walked through Martin Place yesterday for their only public meet and greet in NSW. Ruth Lee told AAP she wasn’t sure how much longer the monarchy would last but wanted to meet the royal couple because they’re part of Australia’s cultural history. “I’ve seen Queen Elizabeth and then Prince Charles, then Prince William, so I’ve seen them all except the little ones,” she said. - AAP

Passengers ‘murdered’ South Korea’s Supreme Court has upheld a murder conviction and life sentence for the captain in the Sewol ferry disaster. The court found Captain Lee Jun-Seok had effectively drowned more than 300 passengers to save himself. The Sewol was carrying 476 people when it went down off the southwest island of Jindo on April 16, last year. Of the 304 who died, 250 were pupils from the same high school. The tragedy shocked and enraged the country as it became clear that it was almost entirely man-made. - AFP

Big chain stores fail to impress Big chain stores aren’t rated as highly as their independent counterparts when it comes to keeping customers satisfied, a new Consumer New Zealand survey reveals. In August, about 10,000 Consumer NZ members shared their shopping experiences at 45 stores around the country. They were asked to give a rating from one to 10 on whether they would recommend furniture and bedding; hardware, DIY and automotive; home appliance, technology and carpet; and flooring stores they visited. The survey rated stores on performance, including product range and customer service. Among the home appliance and technology retailers, 100% Appliances, Mighty Ape and Heathcote Appliances came out on top and had the most satisfied customers. Both 100% Appliances and Heathcote Appliances stores are independently-owned. They were rated above average for duringsale and after-sale service. However, customers were not impressed with big chain stores such as JB HiFi, Noel

Leeming and Harvey Norman, with only about 40 per cent of their customers recommending those stores. Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said independently-owned stores focused greatly on customer service. “Independent stores have to try harder because they can’t always compete on price,” she said. When it came to keeping customers happy, “you can’t beat good old-fashioned customer service”, she said. Nobody from JB HiFi or Noel Leeming could immediately be reached for comment, while a spokeswoman for Harvey Norman declined to comment. Heathcote Appliances director Grant Heathcote said he was “really chuffed” but not surprised by the result. Mr Heathcote credited the success of the family-run business to great customer service. “Our staff are indoctrinated to provide great service.” - NZME

Grocery prices fall Falling fresh milk prices led the way for grocery prices to go down last month, Statistics New Zealand says. “Grocery food prices fell 0.8 per cent in October, led by a 5.7 per cent fall in fresh milk prices,” Statistics NZ consumer prices manager Matt Haigh said yesterday. Seasonally lower prices for fruit and vegetables also influenced the overall drop in prices. “The average price for 2 litres of bluetop milk was $3.13 in October 2015, the cheapest since January 2008 when it was also $3.13,” Mr Haigh said in a statement.

The market week in review ast weekend the October US jobs report was released, with the news flowing through markets this week. The US economy added 271,000 jobs, which was much more than the 180,000 economists expected. It was also a significant increase on the previous two months and these were both revised higher. The unemployment level fell to 5.0 per cent, which is the lowest level seen since April 2008. There was also a small amount of growth to average hourly earnings, increasing 0.6 per cent for October and 2.5 per cent on an annualised basis. Analysts saw this jobs report as the catalyst that the US Federal Reserve were looking for to raise interest rates from historic lows. Before the jobs report the market was pricing in a 58 per cent chance of a rate hike at its next meeting. This increased to over 70 per cent following the report. As a consequence of this rise in expectations, equities markets in the US have fallen lower over the past week. The next Fed meeting is on 16 December and analysts will be looking for further signs that rate hikes are likely. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand released its financial stability report this week. This is released every six months and gives a view on how the RBNZ sees our economy. In recent times this report has taken on a more important role given the macro prudential policy steps that the RBNZ has implemented to tame the rampant Auckland housing market. This time the RBNZ governor and his team talked about the three main risks they see to financial stability. The first was the Auckland

Statistics NZ said sauces and snack food prices also fell in October, and prices for cakes and biscuits rose. Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 1.7 per cent, reflecting lower prices for chicken and lamb. Higher pork and beef prices partly offset this. Statistics NZ said fruit and vegetable prices fell 5.2 per cent in October, as seasonally lower prices for tomatoes, lettuce, and courgettes were partly offset by higher prices for potatoes. Vegetable prices fell 8.3 per cent but were up 0.9 per cent after seasonal adjustment, the agency added. - NZME

In brief Fire in the pitch The man in charge of preparing the second test pitch is hoping for a return to the Waca’s fiery old days. Time was when the flint hard ground in Perth was among the most feared in the game, at least for batsmen, for the bounce and pace offered to quick bowlers. It was the ground where local hero and fast bowling great Dennis Lillee announced himself with a blistering eight for 29 to skittle a World XI for 59 in 1971-72. It’s record has been less brutal in recent years, albeit no cakewalk, but curator Matt Page is confident the fast bowlers will be licking their lips. - NZME

Ashburton College’s 1st XI will look to continue their fine run of form when they host Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Colts at the domain tomorrow. College recorded a second, successive outright win over Shirley Boys’ 2nd XI last Saturday, but coach Mark Reid said he is expecting a tougher encounter tomorrow.

“It was a good two wins. “Unfortunately I wasn’t there, but the boys said that Riccarton and Shirley Boys’ weren’t as strong as teams we played last year,” he said. College locked horns with CBHS Colts earlier this year, and Reid insisted there is no place for complacency if his team’s recent success is to continue. “Last time we played them we

were all out for about 120, but we’re a pretty good bowling side. “We won but they’re a good team,” he said. “They’re made up of mostly their best year 10s, so although they’re a young side, they’re very talented.” College were comfortable throughout their outright win last Saturday. After ending day one on 22-2 in their second innings, Shirley

needed another 98 to send College back in to bat, but fell short and were all out for 105. Although it took skipper Kieran Hunt an hour to remove Shirley’s Ryan James (23), with Zach Naldrett taking a fine catch, College showed their class, and the home side had no answers. College’s match against CBHS Colts will begin at the Domain at 10.30am tomorrow.

Warner, Smith major obstacles for Black Caps New Zealand reckon they know the best recipe for putting the skids under Australia’s batting lineup, but it won’t be easy. They had hopes of denting Australia by making inroads into the top order at Brisbane in the first test. Queensland pair Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja were identified as possible weak links, having been recalled to the test team in the wake of the retirements of seasoned Chris Rogers and captain Michael Clarke. It didn’t exactly work out. Burns hit 71 and 129 in his first test since last January when he made 58 and 66 against India in Sydney. Khawaja, unwanted for just over two years, grabbed his chance with a classy 174 in the first innings. “We’ve seen a bit of Khawaja,

he’s had a bit of experience and he’s a good player,” New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan said. “Burns we saw a little bit of in Canberra [at the start of the tour]. “He looked a good player and he played out of his skin in the test.” That said, McMillan sees hopes for New Zealand if they can get their fast-medium bowling group on song early in the second test, starting at the Waca today. “I think if we get it right there’s still room for manoeuvre. But to me, David Warner and Steven Smith are the key.” Stocky opener Warner was the man of the match for his 164 and 116 in Brisbane. For a player initially branded a T20 specialist only, he has made himself into a terrific test player,

Opening bat David Warner. averaging 49.1, with 14 test hundreds. His ability to knock a bowling attack off stride early, then cash in, has turned him into one of the best - and most feared - test batsmen. He clouted India for 180 off 159 balls at the Waca in 2012; a year later Warner took 112 off England on the same ground. Both games were easily won

by Australia. He has form at this ground. Smith missed out in Brisbane, making 48 and 1, Trent Boult whistling a fine inswinger through his defences in the first innings. But he’s averaging 55 in tests and has already hit 11 centuries in 34 tests. Smith has struck seven of them in the last 12 months, and all 11 have been made in the first innings. McMillan remains optimistic about finding ways to trim Australia’s batting sails. “They are the two guys who sit above the rest,” he said of Warner and Smith. “If we can put a dent in them it puts the rest of the batting lineup on notice. “That’s the challenge, knock over those guys early and see how they respond.” - NZME

An Australian umpire says big bats have made the game so dangerous that umpires need to wear helmets - and he claims powerful West Indian batting star Chris Gayle agrees. Sydney-based Karl Wentzel believes the ICC must address the need for umpires to wear protective gear to prevent fatalities. Wentzel is known as the “umpire who wears a helmet” according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Wentzel donned a lid after he lost five teeth and was knocked out when a ball smacked him in the mouth in 2001. Medical repairs cost him nearly $50,000. An Israeli umpire Hillel Oscar - a former national captain died late last year when a ball cannoned off the stumps and hit his neck. “The bats are so much stronger today and batsmen are hitting the ball heavier,” Wentzel said. - AAP

Border backs Kane If Allan Border could choose one person to bat for his life, it would be Kane Williamson. The former Australian captain paid the Black Cap the ultimate compliment yesterday, citing Williamson’s textbook technique places him above the world’s best. “Of all the gun batsmen going around, he would be the one I’d choose to bat for my life,” Border said. “Over AB de Villiers, in front of Steve Smith, in front of Warner, in front of all of them.” At 25, Williamson has already scored 11 test centuries, placing him in the upper echelons of high achieving youngsters, next to the likes of Donald Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar. - AAP

Younis quits ODIs Pakistan batsman Younis Khan has announced his retirement from one-day international (ODI) cricket, saying the first day-nighter against England in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday will be his last match. The 37-year-old had wanted to leave the format on a high after being selected in the 16-man squad for the four-match series against England despite patchy form. Wednesday’s game will be Younis’ 265th oneday international, nearly 16 years after making his debut in February 2000 against Sri Lanka in Karachi. Going into his last match, Younis has scored 7240 runs with seven hundreds. - AFP

In brief Curry golden for State Stephen Curry scored 28 points as the unbeaten Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 100-84 yesterday to equal a 55-year-old franchise record for the best start to a season in history. The Warriors victory took the reigning champions to 9-0, emulating the feat of the 1960-1961 side featuring the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. Curry, who had been averaging more than 32 points per game, added to his season haul with another sparkling contribution, taking the game away from Memphis with a 17-point blitz in the third quarter. In other matches Orlando shaded the Lakers 101-99, Toronto were too good for Philadelphia 119-103, Indiana beat Boston 102-91, Atlanta downed New Orleans 106-98 and Brooklyn beat Houston 106-98. - AFP

Fast 4s back with a bang After being rained off last week, Terrace Downs Fast 4s made its return to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Tuesday evening. Scruff and Co maintained their run of maximum points, and it will take a herculean effort from their opponents next week to prevent them collecting the prize vouchers. Greg Feutz filled in for Two Pistols against Scruff and Co, and

provided Rhys Cromie with his first serious test since the competition’s inception. Cromie won the first set 4-3 with the tiebreak score 5-3. Feutz fought back, and reversed the score exactly in the second set, then Cromie was able to impose his good recent match fitness to prevail 4-1 in the final set. Peter Leonard started like an express train, skunking Peter Bryant 4-0 in the first set.

Bryant settled into the match, and at 3-3 it was tiebreak time. Leonard was able to bring out some big serves to swing the tiebreak his way 5 points to 2. In the doubles, Scruff and Co were clinical with a 4-0, 4-2 win. ConAid were hoping for an upset with all of NKT’s regulars unavailable, including Koji Kawamata ducking over to Portugal to collect the Award for NZ’s Best Golf Hotel for Terrace Downs Re-

sort. Aidan Mitchell took on one of the super-subs, Sam Bubb, and they split 3 quick sets, with Bubb winning the third set 4-0. In the other singles, Connor Brosnahan was outclassed by Gala Cup Mixed Doubles Champion, Tessa McCann, only managing one game in the process. It was more of the same in the doubles, with NKT’s Bubb and McCann winning 4-1, 4-0 to make it 3-0 over all to NKT.

Abercrombie aiming for another 200 Overshadowed in all the altercations and recriminations after last weekend’s loss to Melbourne was the performance of Tom Abercrombie. Wearing the Breakers singlet for the 200th time, Abercrombie lived up to the tag bestowed on him post-game by team-mate Corey Webster - a “young veteran”. There were the leadership qualities a player can only accrue after spending eight years in the Australian NBL, but there were also obvious signs Abercrombie has plenty of spring left in those 28-year-old legs. And as the Breakers (4-4) contend with yet-more absences ahead of tonight’s showdown against old rivals Perth (6-3) at Vector Arena, Abercrombie is ready and willing to continue

putting the team on his back. Skipper Mika Vukona is set to sit out the Perth encounter with a nagging hamstring strain, while Tai Wesley will be another absentee after having his appendix removed, a procedure with a threeweek recovery period. But both men were also missing in Melbourne, when Abercrombie poured in a game-high 24 points to put his side in position to pull of a deserved road win over the undefeated leagueleaders. That victory disappeared in the amount of time it takes a referee to whistle for an unsportsmanlike foul, but Abercrombie’s impact must still be recognised. His haul came on a seasonhigh 18 field goal attempts and, with both player and team benefiting when the aggression is in-

creased, Abercrombie was keen to keep calling his own number at the offensive end. “I feel like I’m playing pretty well and I’m in really good shape at the moment, so I want to continue being a factor out there,” he said. “I guess it’s a function of how the game’s going but, in some of those games when [Corey Webster and Cedric Jackson] are rolling, I’ve got to make sure I stay involved, because when I’m aggressive and getting involved, good things happen.” Coach Dean Vickerman was in complete agreement, emphasising the need for the swingman with the sweet shot to keep gunning for the basket now he’s found full health. “We talked about his shot attempts and pushing that up a

little bit,” Vickerman said. “It’ll take a couple of games to get the balance between him and Corey but I think we’re starting to find that.” That balance, when struck, makes the Breakers a formidable foe, as Perth may find tonight. He’s enjoyed some titanic battles with the Wildcats over the last eight years but, for Abercrombie, the excitement of these games never wanes. And, pleasingly for the Breakers, Abercrombie hopes there are plenty more fierce clashes to come. “I’ve got a lot of experience playing at this level and have a pretty calm and collected head out there,” he said. “I still remember game one, eight years ago, so it was nice to clock up 200. Hopefully I’ve got another 200 left in me.” - NZME

Ahead of the series-deciding test on the weekend, it feels like the first physiological battle has been won by the English. Local referee Ben Thaler appointed, despite his indifferent performance in the first test. The New Zealanders struggled with his interpretations - particularly around the ruck, which were different to what they usually encounter in the NRL. They were also on the wrong end of a heavy penalty count, those that was more down to the constant pressure they were under than any decisions by Thaler. However, there is no doubt the Kiwis looked more comfortable last week with the second test controlled by Gerard Sutton, but the Kiwis camp is dismissing suggestions that the appointment is an advantage to England.- NZME

Hamilton shakes illness Lewis Hamilton intends to climb off his sick bed to realise a childhood dream with a first victory on the native soil of his hero Ayrton Senna in Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. The three-time drivers world champion delayed his arrival in Brazil by 24 hours on doctors’ orders after falling ill, but his Mercedes team made clear he has every intention of racing for his first win in Brazil at the ninth attempt. “It was a dream of mine to race in Sao Paulo when I was younger,” he said. “I always feel his (Senna) presence when I am there - it is a very special race for me.” - AFP

De Bruin not finished Silver Ferns defender Leana de Bruin does not appear ready to pull the pin on her international career. The 38 year-old has made herself available for next month’s national trials in Auckland, where she will compete for a place in the 2016 Silver Ferns squad. There was speculation de Bruin and a couple of other veterans in the team would step down at the end of this season, but so far shooter Jodi Brown is the only member of the World Cup line-up to announce her international retirement. Earlier this year Joline Henry and Camilla Lees announced their retirement after missing out on the World Cup squad. - NZME

Chasing the Guineas double Premier jockey Matt Cameron wants to double up. The South Auckland hoop has been stable jockey for the powerful Te Akau Racing Stable for the past few seasons and landed his first Group One win for the operation in last Saturday’s 2000 Guineas aboard ultra-impressive winner Xtravagant. He partners Darci Brahma filly Risque in tomorrow’s Gr.1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas with the intention of doubling his tally of elite-level wins for the stable within the space of a week. “I’d won everything else but a Group One for Te Akau before last weekend so it was good to finally get that one - and to do it in the manner that we did was pretty special,” Cameron said. Cameron is still savouring Xtravagant’s 8 1/2-length win in race record time in the 2000 Guineas, but is anxious to complete his Riccarton Group One set with 1000 Guineas success on Saturday with Risque. “She’s a top chance. “It’s a bit more of an even race than last weekend because there’s a good handful of fillies that go into it as winning chances,” Cameron said. “But my filly has done nothing wrong in her lead-up races. “She’s flying and she’s had a decent couple of weeks break going into this so she’ll be cherry ripe. “They’ve had a bit of rain in Christchurch so the easing of the

Sky Major to rebound Champion trainer Barry Purdon believes Sky Major can bounce back in today’s $250,000 NZ Free-ForAll - and the bookies agree. The dramatic failure of the New Zealand Cup on Tuesday has drawn the ace in today’s Group 1 sprint at Addington, giving him options as he looks for his first win of the season. Sky Major was the first horse beaten on Tuesday, stopping at the 600m. But he was found to have a flat tyre, and Purdon simply wants to turn the page on the run. “That was why he lost contact with Smolda at the 600m but when you watch the replay he was only beaten 10 lengths, so he didn’t stop trying, even though you have no hope over 3200m with a flat tyre,” said Purdon. - NZME

High hopes for Hiflyer

Matt Cameron eyes up a big prize in Saturday’s 1000 Guineas at Riccarton. ground will help her too. “She’s got a good draw [barrier three] and I think she can win.” Raced by The Oaks Stud, Risque has gone on from a maiden win at Ashburton three starts back to a fast-finishing second in the Zacinto Guineas Trial at Riccarton and a last-start win over Son Of Maher in the Armadillo Stakes. A savvy ride saw Cameron go straight to the lead with a decisive move early from barrier

13 aboard Xtravagant last week and he again intends taking up a prominent position in the 1000 Guineas. “As long as she’s within reach anyway. I’d like to be racing in the first three or four,” he said. Cameron, currently second on the premiership, has a strong book at Riccarton with impressive debut winner Sassy ‘N’ Smart, the horse to beat in the Listed Barneswood Farm Agist-

ment Welcome Stakes (1000m). “She’s a really smart filly. “She’s beaten most of those horses already and she’s probably the pick of my rides,” he said. Cameron’s ride in the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup (3200m) is Otago stayer Wild Bill. “He’s won at 2500m and looks a good runner’s chance, though the top four or five horses in betting in that race will be tough to beat,” Cameron said. - NZME

Te Aroha trainer Peter Lock believes he has a special talent in Hiflyer, who overcame a slow start to finish runner-up on debut last month on his home track. “He’s potentially the best horse I’ve had,” he said. “He missed the kick by three lengths the other day and ran his last 600 in 34 seconds to finish second. He’ll have one more run and then we’ll look at a good three-year-old race for him.” A son of Tavistock, Hiflyer is part-owned by breeders Cambridge Stud who also have a racing interest in his stablemate and last-start winner Hidden Treasure. “He’s another one with a lot of ability and he could be a serious cups’ horse this time next year,” Lock said. - NZME

YOUR STARS ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Finding one answer will open the door for new questions. For this reason, it’s very important you send your curiosity down a path you truly want to be involved with for the long haul. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): While today’s circumstance isn’t the best you could have hoped for, it’s also not the worst you’ve known. The next step is to determine what is necessary, do that and only that. Moderate action will bring success. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The fear of rejection is practically universal. That’s why people admire those who are willing to put themselves on the line. That’s the kind of person you are. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The two things you most need from today’s endeavours — joy and challenge — may come from the same activity. Go where you feel encouraged to work and play harder than usual. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): What you can do yourself you will do. It’s the fast, efficient, empowering way. It’s not right for every day, but your confidence and energy are high so make the most of it. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There’s no reason to approach relationships the same way you did yesterday. Put a twist in it. You’ve already proven you can be consistent. Now prove you can be fun. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Here’s a way to stay stressfree: Plan for mistakes. Leave early in case directions are wrong. Make a contingency in case the others don’t show up with all they are supposed to. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’ll play off the energy of others — that is, as long as you’re around people with the kind of energy that makes you playful. If you’re not, why is that? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Some questions lead to quick fixes, errands accomplished, problems solved. Other questions are rabbit-hole portals to entire alternate universes. Alice was never trying to go to Wonderland; she just landed there. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When your friend is excited about something, you try to find something in it that you can be excited about, too, even if the subject isn’t initially that interesting to you. That’s the kind of friend you are. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Before you try to fit in with a group, make sure you know why they are a group in the first place. What are their bonds and values, and do you share them? If not, do you want to? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You want to share creativity, laughter and love, so go where the social energy is warm, if a little off-kilter. You could cause a stir in a fun group of misfits.

Punters flock to Cup Week’s ‘country day’ It might not have been a race day quite up to New Zealand Cup standards, but the Ashburton Trotting Club’s cup week meeting pulled the punters in yesterday,

filling the gap between the industry’s main event on Tuesday and today’s show carnival meeting at Addington. Ashburton’s lower key meet-

ing was still a payday for drivers, trainers and owners. In Race 10, the Canterbury Wool Brokers and Len Bell Memorial Pace for C1 three year and older

horses, Motu Lightning Lass, trained at Dromore by Simon Adlam pipped the Cran Dalgetytrained Secret Notion at the post by just a head with Gabby’s Star,

trained and driven by Robbie Holmes coming home four lengths back in third. The McArdle-Top Tart six-yearold mare ran the 2400m in 3.05.56.

Southee ‘still in contention’ Tim Southee will be given every chance to be ready to play the second test against Australia, starting at the Waca ground today. Indeed captain Brendon McCullum said he would be cut “a bit more slack” than other players on the count of his experience and importance to the New Zealand attack.

That could translate to Southee not having to be 100 per cent, as long as he is close to fully right. That might be tempting fate. Southee suffered an irritated disc in his back on the opening day of the first test in Brisbane last week. He had a light bowl in the nets on Thursday and was having a more extensive workout yesterday.

NZ identifies major obstacles P17

“After he’s had a bowl today will be able to assess it,” McCullum said. The New Zealand team for the test hasn’t been named - and might be left until this morning - and the composition of the side hinges on Southee’s selection. The 26-year-old has played 42 tests, taking 145 wickets at 31.8.

New Zealand may opt for four seamers, including Southee, to cover any relapse he may suffer. Other options include playing three seamers and bringing in left arm spinner and useful batsman Mitchell Santner, to complement Mark Craig’s offspin. “Tim is a strong leader within the group.

“We trust him completely and he’ll make a decision which he believes is the best for the team,” McCullum said. He said there were good options in the squad and “whatever happens (with Southee) we are confident we’ll take in a team that is going to get the job done”. - NZME
