One of the biggest inhibitors to population growth in the Ashburton District would be a shortage of GPs, Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley said. The district’s GPs were already under pressure from high patient numbers, with some closing their books, making it difficult for new arrivals to access primary health care. But on virtually every other front, the district would be able to cater to a rapidly increasing population, Mr Brawley said. “We’ll have to find a lot more doctors and I believe a lot more work

needs to be done by the Government on the doctor’s bonding scheme, we need to be part of that.” The scheme currently applies to about 12 communities and health board areas generally classified as rural, including South Canterbury, but Ashburton is not on the list. “It seems we’re rural when it suits and not rural when it suits.” General practitioner Howard Wilson has worked regularly in Ashburton District as a locum and knows the pressure the district’s general practitioners are under, particularly the onerous on-call responsibilities that came at weekends, where one GP

sees upwards of 40 patients a day. As clinical lead for a group charged with ensuring rural practice sustainability in Canterbury, Dr Wilson said Ashburton’s problem was well recognised and he’s confident solutions would be found by working with GPs and the community. Ashburton’s shortage was mirrored in other rural areas and the sustainability group was well down the track in finding solutions in Kaikoura and Hurunui, he said.

X Factor killer: I don’t want pity Convicted killer and X Factor contestant Shae Brider is not asking for mercy or pity, but says his success on the talent show was simply “tearing down another wall” to escape a life he left in a prison cell years ago. However, his victim’s mother and a media expert say the show’s producers should have ensured the full facts of the crime were fully disclosed to audiences. Brider, 29, was sentenced to eight years in jail for his part in the manslaughter of Jeremy Frew, 16, in Wanganui in 2004. He was one of four charged with Jeremy’s death after what the judge described as a “rampage of violence” where the group assaulted Daniel Grey, Greg Parnell and Robert Kerrigan on the same night. On Tuesday, Brider’s successful X Factor audition was broadcast with a segment describing the crime. “I met some dudes and we went to a bonfire,” the Masterton man told the show. “There was a commotion with two of them and one of them stabbed the other one and he ended up passing away.” Brider admitted he served six years in prison but no further context was given to the story.

Stevia-sweetened fizzy drink Pepsi Next will hit our shelves next week, a month ahead of rival Coke Life – but health experts doubt the new products will bring any major reduction to the overall harm caused to Kiwis by sugary drinks. Pepsi Next, which like Coca-Cola’s green-labelled product is sweetened with stevia leaf, is being marketed as a healthier alternative to regular Pepsi Cola, which contains about 30 per cent more sugar. Stevia comes from a plant native to South America and had been used as a natural sweetener around the world for hundreds of years before the rival soft drink giants saw it as a way to slash sugar levels. It had been growing in popularity because of its ability to naturally reduce sugars in diets while retaining a high level of sweetness, said Aisha Daji Punga, commercial director of PepsiCo’s New Zealand bottling partner, Frucor. Coca-Cola’s own product, expected to launch here in early April, was developed in response to a growing demand for less sugary drinks.

According to the website, the picture is of a member called “Brighton”, who is 48 years old, weighs 82kg and works as a civil engineer in Manchester, England. Mr Cunliffe told the Herald he wanted the profile removed. “It’s a joke but we’ll seek to get it down,” he said. “I wish I was only 182 pounds – but I am not a civil engineer from Manchester. It is clearly a quiet day in the National Party. And, not content with sending troops to the Middle East, they are up to their old tricks.” Mr Cunliffe said the photo was from when he was in the Hawke’s Bay. ■ MAYFIELD A&P SHOW

Little pigs practise footwork BY CAITLIN PORTER

CAITLIN.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The most popular attraction at the Mayfield A&P Show will this year have a special guest. Official pig trainer Mike Farnell already has 10 pigs in training for the prestigious pig race, but this year he has enlisted a special helper – a wolf. However, people need not fear, the wolf is friendly and is purely around for encouragement. And so far the speedy piglets are doing well in their training, Mr Farnell said. “It’s still fairly early stages, but we are starting to introduce jumps,” he said. Yesterday, the pigs tried out a new jump for the first time and performed well. “It’s all about habit,” he said. This is the 26th year pig racing has been part of the show and this year’s lot look set to offer some superb racing, and en-

tertainment. At only eight weeks old, the pigs are a little younger than in previous years but Mr Farnell is hoping their youth may equate to an even faster race this year. The pigs have been training in peace at a property just outside

of Mayfield, but come race day they would have to contend with a lot of noise from spectators. “You can’t train for that, you just have to make it so [running] is automatic.” This year Mr Farnell and his father John are trying to add in

different elements, to make sure the pigs perform their best on race day – including practising the obstacle course in wet weather. Every time the pigs run Mr Farnell makes it a little bit harder either by introducing or

adjusting a jump. ‘They know what they’re doing, they’re pretty intelligent,” he said. The pigs have a couple more weeks yet to perfect their obstacle course technique, before the Mayfield A&P Show gets under way on March 14.

New rules no quick fix for disorder BY SUE NEWMAN

Ashburton’s local alcohol policy might be strong on intent but it might not be the answer to stopping thuggery on Ashburton streets, says Ashburton District councillor Rod Beavan. The council approved its provisional local alcohol policy (LAP) yesterday, and this will now be notified and submitters given a chance to appeal all or parts of it. “Unfortunately thuggery is on the increase on our streets in the CBD and perhaps we’re put-

ting the onus too much on the patrons and licencees and not enough on the people who turn into thugs on the street,” Cr Beavan said. “If we had improved CCTV coverage, if police apprehended appropriately and if judges and courts gave reasonable sentences to these thugs life on the street might be a whole lot better.” About four weeks ago police were called to an early morning brawl on East Street that attracted more than 150 spectators and last weekend police dealt with a number of violence

WARRANTY

issues in town. The provisional LAP had been developed after extensive community consultation over a period of time and while not everyone would welcome the changes it would introduce, the decisions had been made in the belief the policy was the best possible for the community as a whole, said councillor Alan Totty. “If I have any concerns about this policy it’s the lack of consistency between Ashburton and its neighbours over trading hours,” he said. The policy includes a 2am

closing for bars and taverns, a one-way door policy after 1am and shortens trading hours for off-licences to between 8am and 9pm. The one-way door policy will apply in Ashburton only, not in rural townships. The policy, once adopted will be subject to review and change. Councillor Ken Cutforth suggested the council had got the policy “about right”. The provisional policy will be publicly notified on Tuesday. Appeals can be made to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (ARLA) and must be

made within 30 days. Only people who submitted on the draft can appeal. If no appeals are lodged the policy will be adopted in early April and will come into effect three months later. The draft LAP attracted 207 submissions, the majority commenting on trading hours and the proposed one way door policy. Cr Totty said council had made changes to the policy that would not suit everyone but it was an example of the tough decisions councillors sometimes need to make.

■ DAIRY PAYOUT

In brief

No pay rise for Fonterra farmers By Michelle NelsoN michelle.n@theguardian.co.nz

Despite dairy commodity prices creeping up, there is still more pain to come, a Mid Canterbury industry spokesperson says. Yesterday Fonterra maintained its forecast price at $4.70 per kilogram of milk solids for the current season, to the surprise of some economists, who had predicted it would rise to around the $5kg/MS mark. Adding the estimated dividend range of 25-35 cents a share, the total cash payout should come in around $4.95-$5.05. Prices at last week’s GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) auction averaged $3366, with whole milk powder achieving $3272. Fonterra chairman John Wilson says GDT prices for whole

milk powder have increased 45 per cent and skim milk powder prices 13 per cent this year. However, Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy spokesperson Jessie Chan-Dorman was anticipating the Fonterra board’s decision. “The whole milk powder price needs to get to a minimum $3500 per tonne to maintain the $4.70 payout – we still need another 10 per cent rise to achieve that,” Mrs Chan-Dorman said. “We would all like to see it go up at some stage, but that all depends on the world markets. “It’s going to be a tough season but the positive outlook is, that coming out of the dry summer, we will hopefully see an improvement in the milk price at some stage. There’s still some

pain to come next spring, when the effects of the dry summer and the low milk price will still be evident.” Mrs Chan-Dorman said farmers needed to be realistic about budgets and plans for the coming season. “Those who are new to the area, and new to the industry, will be hit the hardest. “We are all in the same boat but if you are young, new to the industry or new to the area you need to be talking to other people about how to handle a dry Canterbury summer. “The long-term outlook is still good, but we have to be realistic and prepare for a tough season.” A number of farmers are on 16-hour or once-a-day milking rosters, others are destocking.

A respected shoe designer will soon be winging her way to Ashburton for a night of glitz and glamour. Ashburton shoe store Stepping Out scored second place in a national competition run by MINX Footwear, which will see the brand throw a party at the store in March. The party, complete with bubbly and cupcakes, will be attended by MINX Footwear designer Cushla Reed. The “Win a MINX Party” nationwide competition involved 75 retailers in New Zealand competing for customer votes via the MINX Facebook page. The party will also coincide with Stepping Out’s 10th anniversary. Stepping Out co-owner Moana Taylor said she was “really rapt” with the store’s success, which saw it receive 161 votes. “It’s awesome,” she said. “Everybody got behind it.” Because only 30 guests could be invited to the party, Mrs Taylor said the names of everyone who voted were put in a container and drawn out. Pora appeal Convicted rapist and murderer Teina Pora will find out next week whether his appeal to the Privy Council in London is successful. Pora, who was freed on parole last April, spent 20 years in prison for the 1992 rape and murder of Aucklander Susan Burdett. His case has been reviewed by a Privy Council panel of five judges, including New Zealand Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias. Their decision will be delivered in the UK capital on Tuesday, March 3. Pora has twice been convicted of Ms Burdett’s rape and murder, but his legal team has argued evidence shows serial rapist Malcolm Rewa was responsible. - NZME

Mid Canterbury must find more doctors from P1 “Workforce is a major issue for all of these areas but Ashburton’s GPs seem to be particularly under stress and strain and when it’s coupled with after hours responsibilities it become pretty onerous.” Solutions were usually found by starting with a clean sheet and looking at how things could be done differently, he said. “That doesn’t mean we’ll

change the way practices in Ashburton work but there may be different ways such as working together and working with the hospital.” Ashburton was in the unfortunate position of not quite qualifying as a rural health area and that meant if fell on the wrong side of new funding formula. However, with a hospital that had lost services the question of why it didn’t qualify had to be raised, Dr Wilson said.

“Ashburton is being looked at, at the moment and it will be looked at community wide to get a sustainability model that works for everyone. You’re definitely on the radar. Things should start happening well within six months, possibly within three months.” Ashburton’s population is on track to hit 36,000 by 2026 and 40,000 by 2043. It is currently 32,800. Mid Canterbury’s doctor-

patient ratio is already one to 2182; the national guideline is one to 1500. The Government had already introduced a number of initiatives to help address the GP shortage and had allocated $21.7 million to support the training and employment of GP registrars, health minister Jonathan Coleman said. “At the end of this year there will be 171 first year general practice registrars, an increase

of 50 over the preceding year,” he said. The Government was also investing $1.1 million into the postgraduate generalist placement programme to support doctors practising in rural areas who were considering entering general practice, Dr Coleman said. Doctors training in general practice in Ashburton would be eligible to register under the voluntary bonding scheme, he said.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Long-term plan gets final check By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The fine print of the Ashburton District Council’s long-term plan received its final check yesterday, before it becomes public property. Councillors sweated over every word in every line to ensure the message they were delivering to the community was the message they wanted to tell. The detail, however, was signed off two weeks ago when final decisions were made on projects that made the cut, those

that did not and those where the community could influence the outcome. If the community agrees with the council’s proposed budget, rates next year will rise by an average of 6.5 per cent. Ratepayers in some parts of the district will see a greater increase, some will see less. The following year rates are anticipated to rise by 3.8 per cent and 11.1 per cent the following year. The document explains the way in which rates are levied – a

uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC) which is a fixed dollar amount for every property regardless of value because council believes that activities funded benefit the whole district, or Uniform Annual Charge (UAC) which is a fixed dollar charge on parts of the community that gets a benefit not available to the whole district. The draft plan spells out clearly where rates money will be spent. “We’re asking them what they want, we’re not steering them,

we have to offer options,” councillor Neil Brown said. There are several projects where the community can influence the outcome, but as it is required to do under local government legislation, the council had to, in each case, identify its preferred option. These include the amount of unsubsidised money put into roading, the timing of the EA Networks Centre hydroslide project, options around stockwater race closures and the future of the Rakaia sports facility

project. Each option comes with timeframes and the impact on rates. “Through the submission process and the public meetings people will tell us what they think,” Mr Brown said. The community meeting schedule for the long-term plan will begin in Ashburton with the district’s citizens’ associations on April 20, move to Rakaia on April 22, Methven April 23, Hinds, April 24, Mt Somers April 28, Hakatere, April 29 and Ashburton, April 30.

Museums are usually collectors, but not in Ashburton. Next month the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society will hold a garage sale that will see it clear its decks of the bits and pieces that do not fit into its new home in the district’s art and heritage centre. However, people hoping to bag a bargain and buy an historic item or artefact will be out of luck, said historical society president Bev Tasker. “None of the items we’re selling are part of the museum’s collection; it’s all equipment of various types and much of it has been in use for several years,” she said. The list includes desks of various types, map and plan cabinets, a refrigerator, various stands, office folders, ladder, bookshelves and a large quantity of tools. “Everything must go. Except for a couple of items that are priced, it will be a case of make an offer. No reasonable offer will be refused.” All proceeds from the sale will towards projects needed in the new museum. The garage sale will be held in the old museum in Baring Square east and will start on March 6 at 4pm and run from 9am on March 7.

New Zealand’s most toxic mine sites, the old Prohibition and Alexander mines near Reefton, are to be cleaned up at a cost of $3 million. Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith this week announced funding to clean up the sites, which ranked first and second on the Contaminated Sites Remediation Fund Priority List. “The Prohibition and Alexander mine sites are acutely toxic and a blight on New Zealand’s clean, green reputation.” The levels of arsenic were among the highest recorded anywhere in the world at 400,000 parts per million on land, or 500 times the safe level, and in water at 300 parts per million – 33,000 times the safe limit for drinking water, he said.

There will be train and vehicle rides galore and activities including crafts, face paint, zorb balls and bungy rides. Children and families are also welcome to go for a dip in the Tinwald Pool. Organising committee member Lorayne Oakley said it took a lot of fundraising to ensure the event remained free. “A lot of centres put on

While it’s hard to estimate numbers Mrs Oakley said if the weather was fine, there could be up to 500 people attending. A barbecue, free soft drinks and water will be available, but Mrs Oakley encouraged families to bring their own picnic lunch. The event will be held wet or fine, however, the weather will limit the number of rides and activities available.

The new Hype Youth Health Centre co-ordinator is hitting the streets of Ashburton to get the word out about free service. Mid Canterbury resident Janet Hadley took over the role in December and as a former teacher said it was a job that really appealed to her. Since taking over, Mrs Hadley took time to settle into the role and is now busy getting out and about in the Mid Canterbury community, spreading the message about the youth health centre. “My aim is that every young person in Ashburton knows about Hype and the services it offers,” she said. She said the volume of people using the service is increasing a year to year – a trend she wants to keep going. The youth health centre is a free and confidential service for young people aged from 12 to 24 in the Ashburton District. It has been helping youth out with mental, social, physical and sexual issues since it opened six years ago.

■ MINIMUM WAGE RISE

In brief

Rise may not be enough By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

The minimum wage is rising, but it may not be enough for some struggling Mid Canterbury families. The Government this week announced the minimum wage will rise 50 cents on April 1, from $14.25 to $14.75. Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse said the wage hike was an appropriate increase, given

current economic and labour market conditions. However, Ashburton Salvation Army Major Ken Smith says some Mid Cantabrians are struggling with rising rent and food costs, and while any increase is good, it may not be enough for some. “We would see a lot of those people who come through and say 50 cents is not enough,” he said. “For some of them, you could say $2 is not enough.”

Mr Smith said soaring rent prices were a big factor. “It really is a hard one, and I know rents are really expensive, and I know people struggle,” he said. Demand on the Salvation Army food bank was also on the rise, he said. “It’s steadily increasing each year,” he said. “It makes it tough on people.” Mr Woodhouse said the Government had taken “great care” in setting wage rates to ensure

a balance was maintained between protecting the lowest paid workers and ensuring jobs were not lost. “It balances the needs of both businesses and workers whilst having minimal impact on the wider labour market,” he said. Mr Smith said it would be good to see more money given, but 50 cents was “better than nothing”. “I’d like to see more, but it’s out of my hands I guess,” he said.

Mid Canty truck blaze sparks fire warning By Daisy HuDson

A Mid Canterbury fire officer is warning truck drivers to be vigilant after a vehicle carrying hay burst into flames on Wednesday. The truck was travelling on Fountaines Road near Hinds on Wednesday night when the fire began. Fire crews from Ashburton, Hinds and Mayfield spent several hours battling the blaze, which also spread into a roadside hedge. Hinds Chief Fire Officer Dave Kingsbury said it was not clear whether the truck or the hay was the source of the fire. The truck suffered “extensive” damage in the blaze, he said. Mr Kingsbury said while he was not sure what sparked the fire, truck drivers needed to be cautious when loading hay. “The big thing is when you’re loading hay that is freshly bailed, there is always residue that will come off it,” he said. Drivers needed to make sure too much residue and loose

Heritage grants The Ashburton District Council’s heritage grant committee handed over $6400 in its last grants round to help with the maintenance of two historic buildings. Mid Canterbury Farmers Charitable Trust received $1300 for the replacement of window sashes and facings on the Federated Farmers building on the corner of West and Tancred streets while Brian and Sonia Wright were granted $5100 for the replacement of weatherboards and windows at Somerton on Thompson’s Track. This account has a balance of $40,831 for future funding applications.

A learning centre in Ashburton’s recently opened art and heritage centre will be fitted out thanks to two grants from the Ashburton District Council. It has given the centre $25,000 from its historical acquisition special fund which allows this fund to be closed and from a $50,000 contingency budget established for the art and heritage project.

We also want to make it easier for people to access and understand vital information and data about Canterbury’s water, land and air,” commissioner David Bedford said. ECan proposes to spend an extra $4.6 million in these areas but will also reduce expenditure in other areas such as pest management, biodiversity,

Canterbury Water management strategy and in consents. “When you add the inflationary effect of all our other ongoing work, there will be a $3.3 million increase on our total expenditure in 2016,” Mr Bedford said. The 2016 increase would be followed by a 5.2 per cent increase in the average rate for 2017 and 4 per cent in 2018.” The planned expenditure is still a proposal and open for discussion, Mr Bedford said. “We’d like to know what peo-

ple think of our plans, and especially the priority areas of water, air, public transport and public accessibility to information,” he said. In March, ECan will deliver a booklet explaining its 10-year plan into every household in Canterbury. The main changes that will impact on the Ashburton District are around better water management, natural habitats and air quality, with several new initiatives around better burning in log fires.

Victory for Breakers Game one of the play-offs isn’t a bad time for a team to produce their biggest win of the season. The Breakers last night made a triumphant return to the postseason at Vector Arena, crushing Adelaide in the first game of their semi-final series to put one foot in the grand final. The manner in which the Kiwi club dispatched the 36ers made a mockery of the respective teams’ recent form. While Adelaide appeared a runaway train heading into the playoffs, winning 10 straight games to close the season, the Breakers stumbled across the line by losing three of their last four. - NZME

Girls cleared of ebola By Melissa Meehan Two little girls have been cleared of the deadly ebola virus after showing symptoms as they returned home from a holiday in west Africa. The girls, aged four and eight, were taken to hospital from Melbourne Airport early yesterday when it was noticed they both had high temperatures. Despite being cleared for now, the girls will again be tested in 72 hours to rule out the possibility of having contracted the ebola virus during their trip to Guinea. They are now being treated for a respiratory illness. Victoria’s deputy chief health officer Michael Ackland said the girls were noticed in a routine screening of travellers from ebola-affected countries. He says it’s unlikely other travellers on the plane from Abu Dhabi or others who had contact with the girls inside the airport will become unwell. Quickly identifying the symptoms of the girls at the airport shows agencies are well prepared to prevent an ebola outbreak in Australia, University of Sydney virologist Grant Hill-Cawthorne says. “All of the right measures have been followed in this case,” Dr Hill-Cawthorne told AAP yesterday. “They were picked up from

Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh has allegedly amassed assets estimated at $US32 to $US60 billion during his 33 years in power, a UN report says. The report compiled by a panel of experts for the UN Security Council said that the former Yemeni leader transferred most of his assets to about 20 countries “under false names or the names of others holding the assets on his behalf”. The origin of the funds used to generate Ali Abdullah Saleh’s wealth is believed to be partly from his corrupt practices as president, particularly relating to gas and oil contracts. - DPA

Australia has led the way in terms of ebola preparedness, designating isolation hospitals and ensuring staff continually practised safety measures if an

Christians flee after IS kidnaps 100 The kidnapping of nearly 100 Assyrian Christians by Islamic State militants in Syria has prompted terrified families to flee their homes, as Washington vowed to defeat the group. Nearly 1000 families have fled villages in the northeastern province of Hasakeh since Monday’s kidnappings, according to the Sweden-based Assyrian Human Rights Network. About 800 of them have taken refuge in the city of Hasakeh and 150 in Qamishli, a Kurdish city on the Turkish border, the group said, adding that the number of displaced people came to about 5000. Most of the hostages were women, children or elderly. The US and United Nations

A 27-year-old man who died on a north Queensland street in suspicious circumstances was a New Zealand citizen, police say. condemned the mass abduction - the first of its kind in the war-torn country - and demanded the release of the hostages. “ISIL’s latest targeting of a religious minority is only further testament to its brutal and inhumane treatment of all those who disagree with its divisive goals and toxic beliefs,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, using another acronym for IS. The UN Security Council also condemned the abductions, demanding the hostages be immediately and unconditionally released. Osama Edward, director of the Assyrian Human Rights Network, said he believed the abduction was linked to the jihadists’ recent loss of ground in the face of US-led air raids

against IS that began in Syria in September. “They took the hostages to use them as human shields,” he told AFP. The jihadists, who are battling Kurdish fighters on the ground, may try to exchange the Assyrians for IS prisoners, he said. Their aim was to take the Assyrian Christian village of Tal Tamer, near a bridge that links Syria to Iraq, he said. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Kurdish fighters recaptured three Assyrian villages and a nearby Arab village on Wednesday. “The (Kurdish) People’s Protection Units (YPG) have reclaimed Tal Shamiran, Tal Masri, Tal Hermel and Ghbeish,” said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

But fighting continues in the area, he added. In Tal Shamiran, the jihadists burned down part of a church. And in the Arab village of Ghbeish, IS decapitated four men, and burned down houses and a school. They accused the villagers of “collaborating” with the Kurdish fighters. Edward, a native of an area of Hasakeh province home to 35 Assyrian villages, said the jihadists broke into houses at night as people slept. The hostages were then taken to Shaddadi, an IS provincial stronghold. The jihadists had been intimidating the villagers for several weeks, he said, including threatening to remove crosses from their churches. - AFP

Ukraine ceasefire A UN-backed ceasefire is showing signs of finally taking hold in Ukraine, even as the US accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of destabilising the country through land grabs. Wednesday was the first day since the truce took effect 10 days ago that no deaths were reported on the front, but the relative peace was met by fresh diplomatic sparring between Washington and Moscow. Addressing US legislators, Secretary of State John Kerry said Russia and pro-Moscow rebels had failed to meet the terms of the ceasefire. Putin had put in place policies that “violate all the international norms with respect to territory and behaviour”, Kerry told the House foreign affairs committee. - AFP

Lawsuits settled Three major US tobacco companies - Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds and Lorillard - have agreed to pay $US100 million to settle more than 400 lawsuits claiming that smoking damaged people’s health. A judge awarded a combined $US100 million to the plaintiffs in the lawsuits filed in Florida by smokers or their families, seeking damages for injuries caused by smoking. As part of the settlement, Philip Morris USA, maker of Marlboro cigarettes; RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company; and Lorillard Tobacco Company will collectively pay $US100 million to the plaintiffs. - AFP

OUR VIEW

First move against disorder Stu Oldham

EDITOR

A

meeting of officials concerned about violent crime in Ashburton must be the first of many engagements to understand what looks like a serious and enduring problem requiring a serious and enduring response. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay will soon hold talks with representatives of several local agencies to try and come to terms with an apparent recent rise in violent disorder in the town’s central business district. He wants to convene a small group first, before taking the issue to the likes of the council or other parties that might be able to help formulate a considered and consistent approach. This is a good move that should help cut through the emotion and rhetoric that can cloud sensible discussions about incidents that have been so damaging to public confidence in the safety of their town. But whatever happens it must result in something that the community, from which this violence springs, can respond. The time for handwringing – or, worse still, silence – is over. The need for action is demonstrated in statistics suggesting there were more serious assaults and assaults in public places in the Mid/South Canterbury district last month than in January last year. And this before further incidents in Ashburton this month, including a large brawl – watched by more than 150 people – in which a police officer was allegedly bashed and two other people were knocked unconscious. The extent of the problem is difficult for the community-atlarge to gauge because not all incidents police attend are not always publicised. A couple of incidents might have unfairly given the impression Ashburton is a dangerous place. The odd story about street violence might be so unexpected that it sticks in the mind. Whatever the case, Mr McKay this month said booze-fuelled violent disorder is a community problem that needs a community response. He is right to work now to avoid an ill-informed knee-jerk reaction.

YOUR VIEW Irrigation Anyone who has driven around Canterbury in the past few weeks will have noticed just how dry it is – and also noticed that in many areas irrigators are still spraying water on to pastures and crops. People have been asking us or making comment online about how this can continue even though many of our rivers are low or even dry. The simple answer is most irrigation that is still happening is coming from the large braided rivers or groundwater and this is allowed. Most takes from smaller rivers and lakes are already on restriction – either partial or full – which means irrigators cannot take water or are limited to taking only a portion of what they usually take. The exception is for takes from the big braided rivers – Hurunui, Waiau, Waimakariri,

CRUMB

Rakaia, Rangitata and Waitaki – which often have high flows following nor’west weather events. Many of these are now on restriction also, but they can rise quickly following rain in the mountains. Anyone can find out which rivers are on restriction by visiting our website (www.ecan.govt.nz) and looking for “irrigation restrictions”. While groundwater takes typically have limits on the rate and annual volume these take longer to come into effect because the groundwater system reacts more slowly than rivers to rainfall. There was a good recharge over the winter, but groundwater levels are now falling to low levels as a result of the ongoing dry period. If streams are going dry because of illegal takes this will be picked up and dealt with. Environment Canterbury’s ongoing role is to monitor the

by David Fletcher

levels of our groundwater and surface water resources – and ensure that when limits are reached water takes stop in order protect the environmental and meet community expectations. Bill Bayfield Environment Canterbury chief executive

One-dayers sure have changed I had the good luck to win a ticket to the New Zealand vs Sri Lanka ODI on the radio and thoroughly enjoyed the day out, but couldn’t help thinking how things have changed. First of all I must say how superb the Hagley Oval looks, I think I sat with a stupid grin on my face for the first 15 minutes I was there. It’s a ground made for cricket, not a rugby ground adapted to suit cricket. Lee Germon and all others involved with making it happen should be immensely proud. I remember going to my first “one-dayer” back in the 80s when Geoff Howarth was the captain of the New Zealand side. I remember them playing England and things got so bad, crowd behaviour wise, that Howarth threatened to take his side off the field if things didn’t settle down. The area we were in, on the bank in front of the scoreboard, was renowned for being “entertaining”. There were several live ducks let free on to the ground, I’m not sure how exactly they got the ducks into the ground in the first place but they did.

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

Security guards only checked you weren’t jumping the fence back in those days and you could take in as much booze (and ducks obviously) as you wanted. I remember taking an oldfashioned biscuit tin full of food for lunch, not only was it an ideal food container but it became more useful to put on one’s head during the many can fights. During those, you would look to the heavens (whilst uttering a couple of quick ones) and see the sky littered with hundreds of mainly empty cans. Bang … bang ... bang ... bang I remember hearing on my bikkie tin. Don’t get me wrong, if it appears I am painting a dark and gloomy picture, be rest assured, me and my 15-year-old mates like Howie Timms, Andy Smith, Cam Bruce and one of the Prendergast twins (I think it was Mark) had an absolute blast.

One moment that brought the house down and I will never forget was the streaker in the towelling hat who side-stepped his way past several security guards before stopping and taking a photo of them chasing him and then hopping over the fence to be swallowed up by the cheering crowd. My how times have changed! There were a two streakers (not the fittest looking to be fair) a couple of weeks ago and neither of them managed to side-step any guards, although they were a lot more outnumbered than back in the 80s. But I heard that the streaker in the England vs Scotland game did side-step all the guards inside before being picked up outside the ground by the boys in blue. I happened to be watching the game on the telly when he did his dash, the cameras accidentally caught the first 20 metres of his dash before being swung to crowd shots. The commentators did mention how well the lad had done evading security on the oval, for which they probably received a ticking off from the PC police after their stint behind the mic.

Your matters @AshGuardian

Subscribe at www.guardianonline.co.nz

At the risk of receiving the same ticking off, I say DON’T swing the cameras away. Show the streaker (no need for close ups) on the telly, it’s part of the atmosphere and it’s just a bit of fun. So what if kids see it? I’m sure they’ve seen it all before and I’m picking they would get more psychologically damaged watching the news most nights. Streaking has been around for years and the PC policy of turning the cameras away that’s been in place for the past decade or so doesn’t appear to be slowing it down any, so we may as well roll with it eh? Here’s a thought to leave you with this week. Imagine if the Greg Chappell-whacking-thatstreaker-on-the-bum-with-hisbat incident made it to the telly today! Till next week. Keep your clothes on. The Kiwibank cloak, named Pouhine, will be presented to each year’s winner. More than 230 nominations were received for the 2015 New Zealander of the Year Awards, which are now in their sixth year. Mr Bennett said: “The calibre, commitment and achievement of all the nominees made choosing this year’s winners incredibly tough but it shows how fortunate New Zealand is to have so many great people.” Previous winners of the New Zealander of the Year Award are: Dr Lance O’Sullivan (2014), Dame Anne Salmond (2013), Sir Richard Taylor (2012), Sir Paul Callaghan (2011) and Sir Ray Avery (2010).

Pay rise for MPs settled

MPs will get a pay rise of 5.5 per cent, the Remuneration Authority has confirmed, which translates to a $8200 pay rise for backbench MPs. In its determination released yesterday, the authority said that once a reduction in the travel entitlement was taken into account, MPs’ pay packages would be increased by 3.5 per cent. As a result of the determination, Prime Minister John Key’s salary would rise by $23,800 to $452,500. Cabinet Ministers would receive $283,400, up from $268,500. The base salary for backbench MPs would rise from $147,800 to $156,000. The pay rise would be backdated to July, meaning MPs would get an additional lump payment of at least $5000. Leader of the Opposition Andrew Little’s pay packet would increase from $268,500 to $283,400. In its determination, the authority said the payline for ordinary members increased by 3.3 per cent in 2014. However, tighter rules around MPs’ travel meant their annual entitlement fell to $3200, compared to around $6500 last year. - NZME

Investors breathe big sigh of relief M arkets have reached fresh highs this week as news that Greece and the European Union had reached an agreement let investors breathe a sigh of relief. The ASX200 in Australia, the FTSE 100 in the UK, the NZX50 and both the Dow Jones and the S&P500 all hit record highs this week. Japan was in a similar realm, reaching a 15-year high as the yen weakened against the greenback. Helping push the NZX50 to new highs was Xero, who announced that it has raised an additional $147 million in capital from two of its US investors. The cash will be used to fund new innovations and growth for its US and UK ventures. The share price rose more than 26 per cent following the announcement. Closer to home, reporting season continued for Australian and New Zealand companies. A stand out result from Air New Zealand saw the company’s share price appreciate more than 7 per cent in a day. The company lifted its guidance and its dividend as lower fuel prices and continued sales momentum provide tailwinds for our national carrier. Mighty River Power disappointed investors with its result and saw its share price fall almost 2 per cent following the announcement. Profits for the electricity generator and retailer fell a massive 93 per cent reflecting some one-off writedowns and its exit from its international geothermal interests. The current dry spell we are experiencing also played havoc on the company’s hydro stations. Guidance for the full year was lowered by management to reflect lower rainfall. Mighty River power maintained its interim dividend of 14 cents per share. Across the Tasman, BHP Billiton had a mixed result beating expectations despite profit falling 31 per cent from the previous year. The reduced profit was due to falling iron ore prices which have slipped more than 50 per cent in the past six months. BHP are cost cutting at the moment and have reined in guidance for the full year. However, management remains upbeat about the following year, expecting growth in China, stronger consumer spending in the US and lower energy prices to provide a boost in global economic activity. The share price lifted following the announcement by almost 3 per cent. Generally speaking this is the end of reporting season for New Zealand with just Diligent

Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS

Board Member Services and The Warehouse still to report. US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen spoke to Congress this week starting with the Senate. This was the first time since the press conference following the December Federal Reserve meeting that Yellen has spoken about the economy so it was watched very closely by analysts. The language used was particularly important for signalling on when we might expect rates to rise. There was a subtle change in wording from the Chair, saying that the Federal Reserve will consider rate hikes on a meeting by meeting basis dependent on if the economic data at the time warrants a change. The removal of the word patient from Yellen’s speech gives the Federal Reserve the flexibility to act when its sees fit. She did say that the committee would like to see further strengthening in the labour market and that global economic instability was a concern. Analysts are expecting that the first rate hike to occur in July. Europe continues to keep investors on tenterhooks. Greece was able to secure an eleventh hour deal with the Eurozone to extend its loan for a further four months. For the extension to be granted Greece had to present a list of reforms to the Eurozone which luckily were approved. However, this was not without controversy as the country’s Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said that the heavily indebted country will have issues making debt payments to the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank. However, Greek Energy Minister, Panagiotis Lafazanis said that the Government would not go ahead with the sale of the main electricity utility or power grid operator, which would go against the agreed terms of the extension. Importantly the extension is for four months only so Greece must fulfil its obligations if it has any chance of getting help from the Eurozone. Jeremy Flood works for Craigs Investment Partners. A wool drying floor? Little is known about this wool business other than it belonged to an Ashburton family, thought to date around the 1920s. Photograph owner, Margaret, believes it is probably a wool drying floor at either the woollen mills or the freezing works. She would be grateful for any information anyone might have regarding this photo. If you can help, please see contact details below:

Fresh coriander leaves ■ Preheat the oven to 130°C fan bake or 150°C conventional bake. ■ Beef: Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Add half the beef and fry without stirring until one side of the meat is browned. Stir and brown the other sides. Transfer to a bowl and repeat with the rest of the meat. Cool slightly, then drain off and discard any liquid. ■ Add another splash of oil to the same pan over a medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, carrot and celery and cook, stirring for 10 minutes until soft. Add the oregano, cumin, coriander, paprika, chilli powder, bay leaf and tomato paste, stir for a few minutes. Add the coffee, tomatoes, stock, beans, capsicum and sugar, combine well and bring to a simmer. If your pan is ovenproof,

cover and bake in the oven for 3 hours, stirring once. Or transfer everything to a covered casserole dish for cooking. Remove from the oven and season as required. To serve: Serve over rice with fresh coriander and a dollop of sour cream. To finish, squeeze over the fresh lime juice. This dish can also be made in a slow cooker on low for around 6-8 hours – just transfer everything to the slow cooker instead of putting in a casserole dish. Reduce to 1 cup of stock for this method. If using beef mince for this recipe, it can all be done in the pan on the cooktop – simmer everything uncovered for 30 minutes to an hour, until reduced to a thick sauce.

In brief

■ ONLINE SECURITY

‘Honeypots for hackers’ From the iCloud breach that saw nude images of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities leaked online, to “The Snappening” that resulted in thousands of private Snapchat images being released by hackers, 2014 did a lot to raise public awareness of cloud technologies. These high-profile breaches inevitably gave rise to increased anxiety and trust issues around the robustness of cloud-based services. But how much should you worry about using the cloud, and is it really any less secure than storing all your data locally on your PC or phone? “The cloud” is a nebulous term that describes the vast mass of internet-connected computers, on which people or companies can rent processing power and data storage. It is used for everything from hosting websites to storing archives to running huge datacrunching operations. There are three main “public cloud” providers - Amazon, Google and Microsoft - which between them support a wide array of online services and businesses, from Netflix and Foursquare (Amazon) to Coca Cola and Ocado (Google) to Heineken and GE Healthcare (Microsoft). Using a cloud service generally means whatever data you choose to share will be processed and stored on computers owned by one of these firms, and they will be responsible for keeping that data secure from hackers or other parties wanting to get their hands on your information. But the main problem with the cloud from a security perspective is that these huge banks of computers containing reams of data act as honeypots for hackers, because the reward

What started as a fantasy about flying back to his student flat after a long night at the local pub has turned into a reality worth an estimated $100 million for a former Dunedin man. Glenn Martin came up with the Martin Jetpack concept with friends while he was studying at the University of Otago and, after nearly two decades of secret tinkering in his garage, he founded the Martin Aircraft Co Ltd in 1998. That company was launched on the Australian Securities Exchange this week, and shares jumped 50 per cent on their debut after the company raised $A27 million ($NZ28.2 million) to fund the commercialisation of his jetpack. - NZME

Apple to pay out Apple has been ordered to pay nearly $US533 million by a federal jury that found the company’s iTunes music store uses software that infringes on patents held by a Texas company. An attorney for plaintiff Smartflash LLC praised the verdict. Apple immediately announced plans to appeal and said the case shows the need for Congress to reform the US patent system. The case involves three patents that Smartflash holds for software used in storing data files and managing access through an online payment system. The outcome will likely add fuel to a broader debate over the federal patent system and complaints that it’s easily abused by companies that make most of their revenue through patent lawsuits. - NZH

Azure’s Jason Zander: Consumers get the same protection as business enterprises in the cloud.

for getting inside is far greater than breaking into a single computer. Cloud providers have to ensure their protections are extremely strong. Generally, the level of security applied to information varies depending on the sensitivity of the data, so government documents and valuable intellectual property will be protected by extra layers of security compared with everyday consumer documents and photos, for example. In some cases, cloud providers may have to prove they comply with various security standards and protocols for firms or public sector bodies to agree to use their services. Microsoft, for example, recently became the first major cloud provider to adopt the world’s first international standard for cloud privacy which pro-

vides enterprise customers with multiple assurances that their privacy will be protected. One of the arguments in favour of the cloud is that these security protections are much stronger than anything the average consumer would be able to use to protect their own data. “When I think of the data centres that we’re running, it starts off with just physical security - making sure the buildings are secure, the alarms and the guards and all the rest of that,” said Jason Zander, corporate vice-president of Microsoft’s cloud platform, known as Azure. Zander also pointed out that cloud providers such as Microsoft run both consumer and enterprise applications in the same data centres, so in some sense at least, consumers are receiving the same basic level of protection as enterprises. “We are running the same

core software, we have the same set of security teams and protocols. So from that perspective, we’re bringing all those exact same controls in,” he said. “Azure has additional certifications that are established by governments or by industry sectors, so there is an aboveand-beyond level of certification that we do go after in the enterprise space, but all the core stuff is basically going to be the same.” So given the robust protections, why do cloud data breaches happen? Zander said the complex nature of cloud infrastructure meant the cloud was only as secure as its weakest link. Anyone who downloads a malicious app on to their computer or smartphone could potentially introduce a vulnerability to the cloud next time they log in using that device. - NZME

Gentrack goes shopping Gentrack Group, which develops utilities and airports software, affirmed its annual profit guidance and said it is looking at potential acquisitions in its core markets. Chairman John Clifford told shareholders at their annual meeting in Auckland there was no change in the software developer’s strategy or its prospectus guidance for net profit of $9.3 million on revenue of $44.7 million in the year ending September 30. The company will update the forecast when it reports first-half earnings in May. Gentrack would be open to taking on debt to fund a purchase, he said. - NZH

Carter still out; Ellis back Dan Carter will miss another match due to his leg injury after the Crusaders left him out of their team to play the Chiefs at Waikato Stadium on Saturday. Carter ran at about 90 per cent at training on Tuesday, but is not sufficiently right to play after limping from the field in the round one defeat to the Rebels. Colin Slade, who impressed at No10 against the Highlanders last weekend, will start there again against the Chiefs. Israel Dagg is another absence following his first-half thigh injury in the 26-20 victory over the Highlanders. Tom Taylor starts at fullback instead, with halfback Andy Ellis named on the reserves bench following his return from Japan. Todd Blackadder has resisted the temptation to include blockbusting wing Nemani Nadolo after his return from Japan. Nepo Laulala replaces the suspended Owen Franks at tighthead prop, with Jordan Taufua replacing Luke Whitelock at No8. Meanwhile, Israel Dagg, a man who has his own point to prove this season, could hold the key to Dan Carter’s return to the Crusaders. Like Carter, Dagg has been left out of the team to play the Chiefs at Waikato Stadium because of a leg injury. Unlike Carter, he looked sharp and dangerous before he was forced to limp off, in his case in the 26-20 victory over the Highlanders in Dunedin last weekend. On the form he showed under the southern roof, Dagg is a shoo-in for selection if he recovers in time to play the Lions after next weekend’s bye. It is clear he is a much better fullback than Tom Taylor, who

Chris Boyd has a problem looming. The Hurricanes coach needs to find a way to rest his All Blacks as the Super Rugby campaign rolls on and, problematically for him, that is most of his backline. Frontline All Blacks need to take two games off this season, on top of the two bye rounds, to help keep them in top condition ahead this year’s World Cup. Centre Conrad Smith will miss tonight’s game against the Western Force in Perth, while second-five Ma’a Nonu skipped

Drug claims rejected Allegations of French drug taking before a famous test win against the All Blacks have been strongly refuted by one of the players. First five Franck Mesnel played in the Test dubbed the ‘Battle of Nantes’, in which Buck Shelford was badly injured. A new book due to be published next month claims the team doctor gave the players amphetamines before the game. But Mesnel says the doctor quoted in the book wasn’t the team doctor and there’s no way the players were on speed. - NZME

Piutau moving in Blues coach John Kirwan’s call to move Charles Piutau to centre is an attempt to get his best performing back closer to the action and provide more penetration to a misfiring attack. The Blues’ sole try over the past two weeks came against the Stormers in Cape Town last weekend when a sharp-looking Piutau took advantage of a defensive mismatch to break through for Jimmy Cowan to score. Francis Saili, the player who provided the pass to Piutau, has been dropped to the bench and wing Ben Lam left out of the squad altogether. Piutau, considered a wing or fullback for the All Blacks, has previously mentioned the possibility of moving to centre, so the shift isn’t likely to faze him. - NZME

will play in the No15 jersey against the Chiefs. However, Colin Slade is also an excellent fullback - brave under the high ball and as a defender, and a brilliant counterattacker. If Dagg is unavailable, the Crusaders wouldn’t lose much by moving Slade to the back and reinstating Carter to No10, his best position, once he recovers from an injury understood to be a jarring of the bone he broke in last year’s Super Rugby final.

But if Dagg is at fullback, the Crusaders will be wary about removing an in-form Slade from first-five. What will probably occur is a compromise which they went with last season. In that arrangement, Carter will play at second-five outside Slade, with Ryan Crotty centre. That formation, with Ellis in at halfback and Nemani Nadolo on one wing and either Johnny McNicholl or Robbie Fruean on the other, would be

a formidable backline; a mix of speed, guile and blockbusting power. Crusaders team to play the Chiefs at Waikato Stadium on Saturday: Tom Taylor, Robbie Fruean, Kieron Fonotia, Ryan Crotty, Johnny McNicholl, Colin Slade, Mitchell Drummond, Jordan Taufua, Matt Todd (c), Richie McCaw, Scott Barrett, Luke Romano, Nepo Laulala, Ben Funnell, Wyatt Crockett. Boyd faces a tough balancing act By Daniel RichaRDson

the round one win over the Lions. Boyd is lucky to have versatile midfielder Rey Lee-Lo who can slide straight in for either Nonu or Smith, and he will do so again tonight. There is cover on the wing for Cory Jane and Julian Savea in Matt Proctor and Jason Woodward, but they don’t bring the flash of the internationals. “It’s going to be difficult,” Boyd said. “And the thing that’s going to make it easier is if the other guys in their positions have good form then it’s not such a plane crash.”

Boyd’s problems will begin when he has to rest first-five Beauden Barrett and hooker Dane Coles. Barrett hasn’t missed a game in the past three seasons and has worn the No 10 jersey in nearly every game he’s played, racking up more than 600 points along the way. Barrett’s likely replacement is James Marshall, who will play at fullback tonight, but Boyd said the plan was to find a spot for Marshall to get a run at first-five, perhaps late in a game, so he would be ready to run the cutter as a starter in the future. Finding an adequate backup

to Coles will be harder. Fourthstring option Brayden Mitchell has been used on the bench recently for the Hurricanes as regular reserve rake Motu Matu’u struggles with injury. “There’s a bit of a juggling act, no doubt about that,” Boyd said. Following their wins over the Lions and the Bulls during their trip to South Africa, the Hurricanes have a tricky contest on their hands against the Force. It’s the game which has proven a slippery spot for New Zealand teams in the past as they clock out on their trip home from the Republic. - NZME

Western Force winger Nick Cummins will be held back from tonight’s Super Rugby clash with the Hurricanes to ensure he’ll be cherry ripe to face the Brumbies next week. Cummins underwent minor surgery on his left ankle last month, but he was keen to front up against the unbeaten Hurricanes after arriving back in Perth from Japan on Saturday. However, Force coach Michael Foley says it’s in the best interests of both Cummins and the team to give him one more week to recover. - AAP

‘Ready for anything’ Lachie Turner has come to expect the unexpected at the Queensland Reds. So when he was thrust into fullback last week by coach Richard Graham after details of Karmichael Hunt’s cocaine scandal emerged the morning before their clash with the Western Force, he knew how to handle it. “Before every game last year, Richard came to me and said, ‘You might need to know wing, you might need to know fullback, just learn 13 for me, and you know what - 12, just in case’,” Turner said. “That’s the way I’ve approached every game I’ve been at the Reds and this year’s been no different.”- AAP

Hammett resigns Mark Hammett’s tenure at the helm of the Cardiff Blues has ended just six months into a three year contract. The former Hurricanes coach has endured a tough time in Wales, with his side winning just four of 15 matches since taking the job. The club insists Hammett has not been sacked, but is leaving for personal reasons with his mum not very well. In a statement, the Board of Directors at Cardiff Blues said it was disappointed at the move but had been accepted. - NZME

Highlanders prop taking his chances BY STEVE HEPBURN Ross Geldenhuys was looking for something different - and he has found it. The South African-born Highlanders prop has made rapid strides since arriving in New Zealand at the start of last year. Geldenhuys took up an offer from the Waitohi club in Marlborough to be the rugby development officer in the area. He helped his club team through to the finals of the Marlborough

club competition and then was a key man when Tasman made it to the final of the ITM Cup. During that time, his play round the field and impressive scrummaging caught the eye of Highlanders coaches, and he was offered a twoyear deal at the southern franchise. So, the man who was born in Cape Town and schooled in the Eastern Cape is looking to stamp his mark in Highlanders country. He admits to having some worries over whether he should make the move to New Zealand but it

has worked out fine for him so far. “There is always a bit of doubt and I tried to erase that doubt pretty quickly. I had massive dreams and aspirations. It has worked out extremely well,” he said. Geldenhuys played 18 games for the Lions and also sat on the bench for the Stormers, but with not much happening in his career decided to take the chance and link with the club in Marlborough. Geldenhuys is the only survivor from last week’s Highlanders front row. Ash Dixon comes in at hooker

for Liam Coltman, and Brendon Edmonds will start ahead of Josh Hohneck. The Highlanders are still some way from must-win territory but have received a tough draw. In their first four games, they face the three teams to have won the past four titles and the perennially-contending Crusaders. To win tonight, the Highlanders must be more accurate, and knock the Reds down early. They do not want to take an 0-2 start to Hamilton next week. - NZME Ross Geldenhuys

New format for squash The Ashburton Squash Club has come up with a novel idea for the first tournament of the year in Mid Canterbury. On Sunday the courts on Harrison Street will be a hive of constant activity as T20style squash comes to town; the tournament is crammed into one day, every player will still get three games, but every game’s duration is just 20 minutes, ensuring the oncourt action is fast and furious.

Good news for Hayne In what could be a great sign for Jarryd Hayne, the Detroit Lions have cut their running back Reggie Bush. Bush, on a promotional trip to Australia had been full of praise for Hayne, but with the Lions releasing the 29-year-old running back, who had an injury-plagued 2014 season, the team will need to re-stock the position. The former Parramatta Eel is aiming to be a running back, punt returner or wide receiver. - AAP

Gunners stunned Arsenal are in danger of an embarrassing exit from the Champions League after being outclassed by Monaco in north London. The visitors romped to an upset 3-1 win in the last-16, first-leg clash at the Emirates Stadium yesterday. Gunners manager Arsene Wenger admitted his side lost their way in the match. “The third goal makes our task extremely difficult in the second leg. It looks like we lost our nerve and our rationality.” - AFP

No World Cup compo FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke has ruled out any prospect of Europe’s football clubs receiving financial compensation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar being moved to November-December. “There will be no compensation. League suspended The Greek government has suspended all matches in the country’s football Super League following violence between rival supporters. “The government decision to crack down on violence in stadiums is final,” Deputy Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis said after a government meeting yesterday. There was serious crowd unrest on Sunday when Athens arch-rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos played. - AFP

Cyclists take on the gorge By Jonathan Leask

Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Ride the Rakaia returns tomorrow for a fourth edition of the unique race, a 102km round trip, crossing the Rakaia River twice. The race starts with the trademark mass peloton crossing of the 1.7km long Rakaia Bridge at 8am, before heading

west to cross the river again in the Rakaia Gorge and then turning for home on the downhill run back to Rakaia. The biggest challenge of the race entails the steady climb to the top of the Rakaia Gorge before a descent and taxing climb out of the gorge. The honour of being crowned king or queen of The

Gorge awaits the first rider of each gender to conquer the category three climb. Among the 250 riders is inaugural race winner Simon Acker, but a number of gun riders are missing due to a clash with the start of the Calder Stewart Elite Cycling Series on Sunday. The majority of the entrants

will contest the full length race but there are also some entries in the 22km recreation ride. It allows competitors to join in the mass start ride across the bridge but drop out before the challenging ascents and descents of the Rakaia Gorge. Entry to the race remains open until 7.30am tomorrow, but a late fee applies.

New Zealand cyclist banned for doping By PhiL tayLor Former New Zealand cycling representative Karl Murray has confirmed he is the cyclist serving a two-year ban imposed by New Caledonia following a positive test to two steroids. Murray, 40, was banned by the New Caledonian authori-

ties last year but neither Drug Free Sport New Zealand and Cycling New Zealand were informed. Both bodies said they are investigating. The New Caledonian antidoping commission is understood not to be a signatory of the World Anti-doping Agency code, raising questions about

whether the sanction can be applied beyond the French dependency. Murray, a cycling coach who has trained elite cyclists including a 2014 Commonwealth Games rider, returned positives to testosterone and nandrolone in a random test at the 2013 Tour of New Caledonia.

In a statement, Murray claimed that the positives are a result contaminated supplements he was using. During the ban, Murray won the non-elite categories of K2 (around the Coromandel Peninsula) and also the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. - NZME

Ko chases second NZ title Constant focus and heavy favouritism will accompany Lydia Ko around Clearwater in her attempt to add the NZ Women’s Open to her growing collection of golf titles. Crowds will invade the par72 championship course today with its mix of links, water and parkland terrain, hoping to see if the new world No 1 can claim her second national title. Ko will be challenged by a range of talent, from the multidecorated Dame Laura Davies who will be inducted into the World Hall of Fame in July, to the teenage Australian sensation Su-Hyun Oh who won the recent RACV Ladies Masters. The TAB will open their book today with Ko at short odds to win her second national title followed by English teenager Charley Hull and Oh, who will earn punters almost double figures if they succeed. Hull comes to this tournament after finishing 7th at the Australian Open when she started strongly before battling in the awkward conditions. The 18-year-old was rookie of the year in 2013 on the European tour with five runnerup finishes, before she won her only title, a year ago, in Morocco, where she shot a final round 62 to catch the leader Gwladys Nocera and beat her in a playoff. Hull’s form promoted her as the youngest player selected for the Solheim Cup when Europe beat the US in August 2013. Oh, another 18-year-old, won last month’s Australian Masters on the Gold Coast with a four birdie finish in her second start as a professional to run down the field including Hull,

It may remain one of the enduring images of the 2015 World Cup. Daniel Vettori put on his Captain Sensible hat yesterday, amid all the kerfuffle about tomorrow’s World Cup game between New Zealand and Australia assuming massive historic proportions. The veteran allrounder has been playing international cricket since 1997, including 289 ODIs, 57 of which have been against Australia. So while some of his younger teammates view the clutch group A game as the most significant match of their careers, Vettori sees it differently. “World Cup semifinals are the biggest games I’ve played in,” he said. “And I’ve been involved in a Champions Trophy final. It’s just how much is on it. The knockout stage is where it really matters.” - NZME

who had been the overnight leader. Davies began her career 30 years ago when she won in Belgium during her first year before claiming the British Open the following season. She has claimed four majors among her 85 wins as a professional, including 45 victories on the European tour. In 1994, she became the first

golfer to win on five different tours in one season. Five years later she became the first player to win 1 million on the European Tour and won the NZ Open when it was played at Pegasus in Christchurch in 2010. French professional Nocera has won 14 titles around the globe since signing on late for the paid ranks when she was 27.

She was the order of merit winner on the European Tour in 2008 and the following season earned her LPGA card and won the NZ Open. She started as an LPGA rookie in 2010 but has yet to match her records from Europe. Australian professional Kristie Smith, 26-year-old daughter of former pro Wayne Smith, is also rated. - NZME

He anchored the New Zealand innings from the third over with 117 off 127 balls until Peter Fulton, Craig McMillan and Brendon McCullum brought it home from the 39th over. The successful chase was, at least until two days later in Hamilton, the second highest ODI total hauled in. A crowd of 25,000 watched that Sunday; 40,000 will attend this one. Taylor finds that more inspiring than intimidating. “They’ll be right behind us and no doubt full of good advice for the Australians.

Fortunately, a lot of our guys have played in the IPL where such crowds are nothing unusual but the prospect of a packed house in your own country is great.” “We’ve got an experienced side with the likes of Vettori [54 caps against Australia], McCullum [42], Mills [23] and Southee [12]. The transtasman rivalry adds something given most of us have grown up watching the annual ODI tri-series over there.” Taylor endured angst in the aftermath of his captaincy demotion in late 2012 but maintained his dignity in the public

eye. He has scored a phenomenal number of runs and taken numerous crucial catches in the interim across all formats. “The confidence of the team has been lifted with guys stepping up at different times. When you don’t succeed there’s always the belief someone else can pick up the slack. “Everyone is there to contribute and make Brendon’s job as easy as possible. He’s under a lot of pressure with the tournament at home, so you do whatever you can. “A number of guys have now played a lot of games including the likes of Southee, Guptill and Williamson in their second World Cups.” - NZH

Sri Lanka has punished Bangladesh for some shoddy fielding, when they scored 1-332 in their cricket World Cup match at the MCG yesterday. T.M. Dilshan posted his highest one-day international score of 161 not out and Kumar Sangakkara marked his 400th ODI with an unbeaten 105. The pair put on 210 from 153 balls to all but crush any hope of a Bangladesh upset. - AAP

De Villiers on attack South African captain AB de Villiers admits the Proteas might have lost a little confidence after their cricket World Cup loss to India, but they are intent on pushing the buttons on the West Indies weaknesses tonight. One of the pre-tournament favourites, South Africa have a 1-1 record following their 130-run defeat by the defending world champions. West Indies, who have scored over 300 in each of their three games, have a 2-1 record after rebounding from a shock opening loss to Ireland with wins over Pakistan and Zimbabwe. - AAP

Bowled - or not The luck of the Irish helped deny United Arab Emirates a thrilling maiden World Cup victory on Wednesday. Gary Wilson (80 off 69) guided Ireland to a two-wicket win with just four balls to spare at the Gabba. Despite the tense finish, Irish eyes always appeared to be smiling on the Emerald Isle’s team. Opener Ed Joyce was bowled by Amjad Javed on 17 with Ireland on 1-36, only for the bails to remain on the stumps. Joyce looked back to see the LED lights-fitted bails flash when beaten by Javed - then remarkably fall back into their groove. “That’s part of the game. I’ve seen it before but it has never happened to me before,” Javed said of “bowling” Joyce. - AAP

Lloyd eyes up silver fern BY JONATHAN LEASK

JONATHAN.L@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton College’s Kate Lloyd has been selected to trial for the New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) team to contest the Trans-Tasman Under 19 Netball Tournament in May. Lloyd is one of 24 young New Zealand netballers invited to attend the trial camp in mid-April at Epsom Girls Grammar School in Auckland. The team will be coached by Julie Seymour and Mary Jane Araroa, who are both identified as talented coaches in the NNZ High Performance Coach Development programme. Seymour said that for a lot of the players, the squad camp will be their first taste of being in a high performance environment. Not Lloyd.

Although it will be her first national netball trial, the tall timber has already trialled for New Zealand basketball teams in three different age groups. Last year she represented Ashburton College at the South Island netball championships. Faced with the tough choice between the two this year Lloyd went with netball, and that could see her don the silver fern. Rotorua will host the Trans-Tasman Under 19 Netball Tournament in 2015 with the annual event changing format this year extending into an under 19 tournament. The NZSS team will compete against the Australian U19 A and B team (Australia Green and Australia Gold) and the Aotearoa Maori U19 team.

Bueta breaks long-standing record BY JONATHAN LEASK

Sala Bueta claimed a new record at the Ashburton College athletic finals at the Ashburton Domain yesterday. Bueta sent her shot put out 10.24 metres, breaking Penny Wood’s 2003 mark of 10.69m in the under 16 girls. It was the only record broken

on the day, after five fell at last year’s finals. For the second year in a row Matthew Beveridge was the under 19 boys’ champion with Kieran Hunt runner-up. Hunt’s younger brother, Gareth, took out the under16 boys’ from Rickus Van Zeyl and Taukana Kameo a year after he had won the under 15 title and bro-

ken Trevor Cochrane’s 48-year old triple jump record. A runner-up 12 months ago in the under 14 boys’ age group, Keegan Gentle took the top spot in the under 15 boys’ ahead of former under 14 champion Matthew Clough. Marcus Bishop became the new under 14 boys’ champion, with Max Watson the runner-up.

The under 19 girls’ champion was Maddie Evans with Caitlin Johnstone and Manaia Whatuira-Wereta tied for second. Georgina Kelly got the better of Liberty Ross in the under 16 girls’ standings, a role reversal on the pair’s finish in the under 15 girls’ last year. Veronica Wall became the under 15 girls’ champion from

runner-up Taylor Love while Natasha Waddell and Amy Pearson shared the champions tag in the under 14 girls’ grade, with Ashlee Strawbridge the runnerup. A total of 70 students will be selected to attend the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Championships, to be held in Timaru on March 18.
