Mayfield residents were left counting the cost of living in Mid Canterbury’s hail belt yesterday. One crop farmer has estimated the 15-minute storm will carve up to $500,000 off his bottom line and is pondering what to do next, after golf ball-sized hailstones hammered the rural Mid Canterbury town about 5pm Monday. Homeowners spent yesterday boarding up smashed windows to keep the rain out, ducking outside between heavy showers to pick up broken glass and assess damage to their gardens shredded by the storm. “It really sounded like gun shots were going off outside, so I wrapped my daughter in blankets to shield her from the noise. I was scared of the amount of damage there was going to be to our property,” Mayfield resident John-Hayden Barrett said. It was the second time Mayfield has been struck by a major hailstorm, with crop farmers in the area left reeling at a million dollar repair bill in 2009. A

tornado also ripped through the area in January this year, accompanied by recent wind storms. Mayfield crop farmer Ben

Johnson knows better than anyone the wrath of mother nature’s force. He was caught up in those events and Monday

night’s storm has now completely written off some crops and seriously reduced others. He is now wondering what happens from here. “It’s going to have a huge impact, hundreds of thousands off the bottom line, maybe 50 per cent,” he said. “I’ve never had this kind of impact from the weather before.” The hailstones, estimated to be up to 3cm in diameter, came from a supercell that developed above Geraldine about 4.40pm before moving north over Mayfield. Small branches covered State Highway 72, torn down by the relentless stones, while the Mayfield Service Centre called in windscreen experts to help locals get their vehicles back on the road. “It’s definitively been the talk of the town, people are just amazed at how horrendous it was and how local it appeared to be,” Mayfield Service centre staff member Sharon West said.

Warne, Hurley split – report

Shane Warne and Liz Hurley have reportedly called it quits – again. Hello Magazine reports the couple – known by their moniker “Shirley” – have quietly decided to part ways after months of speculation about their rocky relationship. A source told the UK gossip publication the pair tried to make it work but faced “too many issues” together. Warne for his part has added to the latest rumour, posting a cryptic message on Twitter about wanting to break away from the past. “The past should be the past & stay there. It destroys the future. Live life for what tomorrow has to offer, not for what happened yesterday,” he tweeted yesterday. Warne and Hurley have been on rocky ground since admitting in September that they were “sorting through some issues”. Speculation their romance was over was rife after Hurley failed to tweet a happy birthday message to Warne on his 44th birthday on September 13. – AAP

■ MID CANTERBURY HAILSTORM

Mayfield crop farmers hit hard By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

Where to from now? That’s the question Mayfield crop farmers are asking themselves after supersized hail stones, some the size of golf balls, pummeled their livelihoods on Monday night. With what was shaping to be a relatively successful season, vast areas of crop have already been written off, and now farmers are planning to turn some of what’s left into silage to salvage what they can. Mayfield farmer Ben Johnson estimated hundreds of thousands of his bottom line could be wiped from the storm. After assessing the damage on Monday, it appeared more than 50 per cent of his wheat crop had been damaged along with 90 per cent of his spring barley, and 60 per cent of the autumn barley. “The pak choi are a complete write-off and I would say the grass seed is the same too,” Mr Johnson said. Insurance would not be accessible for all as it only covers their wheat crop. “I’m pretty gutted, what do we do? I guess we try and recover some of the cost by turning it into silage, but if it stays wet like this for too long it will rot,” he said. The January tornado ripped through part of Mr Johnson’s property this year, and in 2009 a hailstorm wiped out crop at the bottom end of the farm. Mayfield farmer Rab McDowell believed the hail could have inflicted an $80,000 blow over 11 hectares of his carrot seed crop, but as he assessed the severe damage he remained philosophical. “The damage could be close to 70 to 80 per cent . . . it would be

nice to have a crop, that’s what we are always hoping for. But storms are one of the risks you take living in Canterbury with this type of farm. Fortunately, crops lower to the ground on his 550 hectare farm emerged relatively unscathed, he said. Federated Farmers Mid Can-

terbury branch president Chris Allen said he had spoken with farmers affected by the hail storm. He said they should contact their insurance companies, agronomists and farm consultants for advice on where to go next and how they may be able to salvage crops.

Call to contact insurance company Federated Farmers is urging Mid Canterbury crop farmers devastated by a Monday night’s hail storm to contact insurance company FMG if their wheat crops have been damaged. Several crops have already been labelled a write-off, and it will be another blow to many farmers who have already battled through snow, wind storms,

a dry spring, and now a freak hail storm. However, farmers who suspect damage to their wheat crops can contact FMG on 0800 366 466 as they are covered by the United Wheat Grower’s Wheat Insurance Scheme, and where commercial insurance is held over other crops, they should contact their representative immediately.

Backyard under water By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Andre and Wentz Fonternel of Methven have learned to dread heavy rain since moving to their Methven rental home about one year ago. That is because water flows like a river from the street, directly into their backyard, and through the home’s foundation grates and under the floor. It happened on Monday night for the second time since they have lived in the house, when a spectacular thunderstorm rolled into town. The Ashburton District Council has previously tried to fix the problem, which it says is caused by the subdivision being at a lower level than it should have been built, and development of the nearby Methven Heritage Centre creating a larger stormwater run-off area. “It costs me money every time,” said Mrs Fonternel, referring to a mechanical hedge

clipper which has been ruined in this latest storm, and a $400 log splitter motor which was destroyed in the last storm earlier this year. She has had to put a pallet under the lawnmower and other items in their garden shed, in an unsuccessful attempt to keep them above the level of the water, which gets to a depth of about 20 centimetres in the backyard. Neighbour George Currie said the council had undertaken sump improvement about six weeks ago, but this latest storm proved that it had not worked to protect vulnerable properties. As well as the Fonternel’s home, another house on Mackie Street had its front yard flooded. His yard used to flood, but he raised a fence line as a barricade. He wanted to see the council return to fix the problem, for good this time. The council has previously

said ratepayers would have to pay over $200,000 to re-align pipework in a complete fix, but Mr Currie said raising a footpath and lowering a sump should solve it. “If nothing is done it means the council accepts water under a ratepayer’s house. Would you really want to live in a house with water running underneath it?” Mr Currie said. The council appears to be turning a cold shoulder to the issue. Council contracts manager Brian Fauth responded to the Guardian via email yesterday, and said the town’s community board had rejected the $215,000 fix as it would burden the town’s ratepayers. “Work was undertaken to enlarge the single entry sumps into double entry sumps to assist in getting stormwater from the kerb and channel but it was recognised that this would not alleviate the flooding completely,” Mr Fauth said.

Thunderstorm throws in a tornado By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

A tornado formed near Methven at about 6.15pm on Monday, as a spectacular thunderstorm rolled into the town. MetService meteorologist Dan Corbett said satellite images of the storm showed it took on “super cell” characteristics as it approached Methven from the south, after leaving a trail of damage at Mayfield. This meant the thunderstorm began to rotate, with contrasting air masses involving warm moist air arising out of the Canterbury Plains meeting with colder air from a jet stream. A “hook echo” formed at the front western end of the storm, which suggested formation of a tornado. The tornado had been just one part of the storm, and had not been very large and he had not heard any reports of it causing damage. Aaron Wilkinson of stormchasers.co.nz, who lives at Mt Somers, said he noticed the tornado as he looked to his right

about 6.15pm while driving on Route 72 and following the storm towards Methven. He believed it would have been in the Forks Road/Ashburton River Road area. “I saw it only for a brief moment, then a whole lot of trees obscured my view,” Mr Wilkinson said. “For all I know it could’ve just gone through a paddock and touched down and then gone back up again, and no-one would’ve been any the wiser,” Mr Wilkinson said. Methven residents had their gardens and paddocks pummelled with hail and heavy rain during the storm. Mr Corbett said the super cell died before reaching the Rakaia River, and when it collapsed, about 7pm to 8pm, would have created strong straight line wind gusts. Mt Hutt farmer Jeanette Maxwell said winds in the area, during the hail, rain, thunder and lightning, had been “quite freaky”, blowing in one direction and then another.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT

In brief

Woman elects to stay in jail A young woman turned down an opportunity for home detention, electing to return to jail, during an appearance in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. Nineteen-year-old Te Aroha Parata’s father had provided a letter offering his address for a home detention sentence. However Parata, who has been in custody for seven weeks awaiting sentencing, declined

the proposal. Defence lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said Parata was addressing her issues in prison, and wants to see out the rest of her sentence. “She is addressing the underlying reasons for her offending and receiving counselling,” Ms Gilchrist said. At an earlier hearing Parata admitted charges of resisting police, escaping police custody,

unlawfully taking a vehicle, driving while forbidden and twice breaching prison release conditions, relating to a series of events in August and September. Parata took an unlocked vehicle and drove around until she was apprehended. An arrest warrant was issued after Parata failed to turn up at court. Police later arrested Parata;

two officers were required to get her into the police car. While she was being transported to holding cells in Timaru she requested a comfort stop – but she ran off into the darkness, and was eventually found hiding in trees nearby. Judge Maze sentenced her to six months imprisonment, and imposed special release conditions. She also remitted $665 of outstanding fines.

Management team serve workers lunch By Toni Williams

Hospital and support services staff were yesterday treated to lunch cooked and served by the management team. General manager Garth Bateup cooked up a storm with director of nursing Jan McClelland for around 200 hospital personnel as part of their annual Christmas shout. A number of people from the leadership team served the food. Finance operations manager and lunch organiser Sue Sheerin said the barbecue shout catered for all staff and spanned almost three hours to cover shifts. It was the third year it had been organised with management cooking and serving food. Before that it was a prepared breakfast. Mrs Sheerin said there had been a better response to the lunch from staff as many enjoyed seeing the leadership team cooking for them. On the menu was sausages, beef patties, chicken skewers, a selection of salads and a range of Christmas fare for a sweet finish.

Close cricket loss Mid Canterbury was on the receiving end of a close loss at the under 15 rep cricket tournament in Christchurch yesterday. Mid was set a target of 136 by a Metro-West Coast side, Oscar Redfern 3, Josh Buchanan 2, and Zach Naldrett 2, taking wickets. Mid tried hard to chase the target down despite losing some early wicket in damp conditions. Josh Gill 44 and Gareth Hunt 22 were the mainstays. Unfortunately Mid was all out eight short of the prize.

Rebuilds endorsed Two major rebuild projects in Christchurch worth close to $1 billion have been endorsed by Prime Minister John Key. Visiting the city yesterday, Mr Key viewed progress on the $217 million Metro Sports facility under way between St Asaph St and Antigua St, and attended the signing of a $650 million contract to rebuild Burwood and Christchurch hospitals. Leighs Cockram JV Ltd, a joint venture between Leighs Construction and Australian company Cockram Corporation, has been awarded the contract to redevelop Burwood Hospital. - APNZ

Train victim named A teenager who was killed when he was struck by a train outside Christchurch yesterday has been named as Jayden John Smith. The 16-year-old from Christchurch was hit by at a railway crossing on Factory Road, close to Belfast, about 8.50pm. He had been walking with friends at the time. Jayden’s two friends - a boy and a girl - crossed the railway line, but he was struck by a northbound freight train, Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said earlier. - APNZ

■ PIKE RIVER

Whittall rules out meeting By PaTrice Dougan Former Pike River Coal boss Peter Whittall will not meet with the families of the 29 men who died in the 2010 disaster after receiving “inappropriate and derogatory” comments. Mr Whittall had offered to meet with the families and two survivors of the mine explosion after all 12 charges against him were dropped by the Crown last week. However, public comments by the families refusing to meet with him, and a threat of private prosecution by the man who took Act leader John banks to court over fraudulent election returns, have forced him to withdraw his offer.

Mr Whittall had been advised by his lawyers, Stuart Grieve QC and Stacey Shortall, to cancel the meeting, the pair said in a statement yesterday. They said Mr Whittall had made the offer “sincerely and in good faith” in the hope of achieving some reconciliation. “Regrettably Mr Whittall’s offer has been met with attacks from many quarters, some of which have been quite inappropriate and derogatory,” the statement said. “Not only was the offer publicly rejected by spokespeople but it was also met with threats of private prosecution and further litigation. In these circumstances, we have advised Mr Whittall that he should not meet with any families at this time.” - APNZ

A man convicted of manslaughter following the death of Radio New Zealand journalist Phillip Cottrell has had his appeal against his sentence dismissed. Nicho Alan Tamati Waipuka appealed against his sentence on the basis that the 15-year starting point for his sentence was excessive, the 12 months uplift for his previous convictions was excessive and that the minimum period of imprisonment should have been no more than 50 per cent of the finite sentence. Waipuka was found guilty by a jury at the High Court at Wellington a year ago. - APNZ

Villa to be moved A century-old Auckland villa built for Sir Edmund Hillary’s grandmother will be removed by the end of next month so it can be replaced with townhouses. Residents in Mt Eden outraged at losing what they see as an important part of the neighbourhood’s heritage, have been protesting against the move and even brokered a meeting between the developer and Auckland Mayor Len Brown. But Manatu St resident Lucille Peters said negotiations had fallen flat and the developer had indicated the house would be gone by January 18. - APNZ

■ COMMUNITY HOUSE MID CANTERBURY

■ NO PAROLE

Community House to rise again Chand BY TONI WILLIAMS

TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Community House Mid Canterbury is rising again with plans under way for a bigger building by 2015. A building feasibility study has just been completed by the organisation, assisted with funding from the Ministry of Social Development. Community House was relocated to the current site after their building was deemed unsafe and demolished following earthquake damage. It used to house 35 to 40 social service organisations but with the move was reduced to 10. It of-

fers rental space (permanent and temporary) and support for groups offering community services in the district. The study was planned to help them determine what size building was needed and what services were in demand for a new building. Community House Mid Canterbury manager Kathryn Barr said the feasibility study was in draft form and the 80-page document had been given to board members to look over. They planned to discuss and finalise it at the end of January. Ms Barr said discussions were under way with Ashbur-

ton District Council for a site, but she would not be drawn in on where, except to say, “It’s looking very positive”. The study made sure Community House was big enough to hold interested tenants now and in the future. She said a tenant meeting was likely in March. “We need to future proof Community House. Once a building is up and set, if you haven’t planned for it, you’ve got no room for growth.” Ms Barr had visited Alexandra Community House in Central Otago and taken heed of their comments that at the time

they opened their new building, it was full. “We want to make sure we are not in that position, that we have the space for (tenants),” said Ms Barr. Ashburton District Council property manager John Rooney confirmed discussions were under way. An account had been set up for the rebuild and anyone wanting to donate could contact Community House Mid Canterbury. Ms Barr said the rebuild fund had already received a great boost with a $3000 donation from an Ashburton firm.

When the Tinwald Club went into recess it was left with $200,000 in its bank account. Rather than give that money away in oneoff donations, the club’s remaining members decided the money should be invested and interest used to support people who lived in Tinwald or who belonged to Tinwald groups and organisations. They handed their nest egg over to the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation to invest on their behalf and the Tinwald Scouts have been one of the first organisations to benefit from that investment. With five boys and their leader Karen Hodgson heading to jamboree in Feilding on December 28, there was plenty of money to raise; it costs each Ashburton scout $1200 to attend the event. The Advance Ashburton grant will make that a little easier, with each of the five scouts receiving a $500 boost to their fundraising efforts. There are 34 scouts, seven leaders and five additional leaders attending jamboree from the Mania-o-Roto zone.

denied parole BY PATRICE DOUGAN A man who fatally stabbed Auckland teenager Christie Marceau has been denied parole. Akshay Anand Chand, 21, was jailed last year on charges of kidnap, assault and threatening to kill, but was found not guilty of murder by reasons of insanity. He has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and the Parole Board ruled it was “clear [he] cannot be considered for release” as he remains an “undue risk to the safety of the community”. In a decision released yesteray, the board said an updated psychiatric report stated Chand now has a “well-established diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia which is currently stable due to medication”. “He is seen as compliant and attending all unit groups but is seen to have a lack of motivation to do anything beyond what is asked of him or to work to identify his treatment needs,” the board said. “He has been encouraged by staff to explore things relating to his risk to society, his status as an insanity acquittee as well as a prisoner and the psychological factors that may have contributed to his offending. He will continue to work with a psychologist on these things in the future.” The board also noted that while Chand is seen to have made a “significant recovery in terms of the positive symptoms of his illness”, it was concerned that he was not symptom free, and that he was in the very early stages of “understanding the nexus between his illness, personality, and offending”. However, the board did give its “cautious support” for escorted ground leaves for Chand to begin, as long as they stayed within the psychiatric hospital’s perimeter. It comes a day after Miss Marceau’s parents welcomed a decision by the coroner to hold an inquest into their daughter’s death. It will take place next year, but a date has not yet been set. In November 2011, Chand, then 18, stabbed Miss Marceau repeatedly in her North Shore home. She died in her mother’s arms. Chand was on bail at the time and was facing charges of kidnapping, threatening and assaulting the 18-year-old university student two months earlier. - APNZ

When you head out to do your grocery shopping in Ashburton you no longer need to leave the cyber world behind. Ashburton is one of 41 New World stores around the South Island that now gives its customers the option of using their smartphones or tablets while shopping by connecting through its free wi-fi . While Motueka was the last of the South Island stores to offer the service, Ashburton’s New World manager Devon Young said that free wi-fi had been available locally in-store for about four months. It was just one more service the supermarket could offer and it was one that many people now accepted as the norm,

Mike Hosking and Toni Street have been announced as new hosts of TVNZ current affairs show Seven Sharp after Alison Mau confirmed she was leaving the programme. Hosking and Street will join current presenter Jesse Mulligan when the show returns in the New Year. Mau will move to RadioLive to host a show with Willie Jackson. TVNZ will look for a new presenter to join Rawdon Christie on Breakfast in the New Year, following Toni Street’s move. - APNZ

Rena block to be lifted

■ SANTA’S LITTLE HELPER

Rena salvage operators are preparing for a major milestone in their task of removing the wreck from Astrolabe reef off the Bay of Plenty. Resolve Salvage & Fire’s specialist divers are in the last few days of preparation before they begin to cut and lift the 700-tonne accommodation block from the sunken stern section of the grounded ship. This stage of the operation marks months of planning and preparation, and will require two separate near-perfect 72-hour weather windows. - APNZ

Mr Young said. “Everyone has smartphones now; you have to have it. It’s a service, a point of difference for us and it’s something that’s now available in most commercial areas.” The service does come with some conditions however – it can only be used in-store, not in the car park, and customers are restricted to no more than two hours continuous use. No password is required, customers simply accept the store’s terms and conditions. Foodstuffs South Island chief executive Steve Anderson said the introduction of wi-fi across the 41 stores represented a ‘significant investment but it was a service that stores needed to have to meet customer expectations.

Sudden death A forensic examination into the sudden death of a 28-year-old Te Aroha woman has failed to determine what happened, police say. The woman was found dead at a property on Stanley Avenue at about 11.30am on Monday by emergency service staff. Detective senior sergeant Graham Pitkethley of Waikato Police said a postmortem examination had been carried out in Auckland to try and establish the cause of the her death. However, this examination was inconclusive. - APNZ

Alastair puts his hair on the line for charity

Rotavirus vaccine All children will be immunised against the gastric infection rotavirus from next July. The announcement was made by Crown drug distribution agency Pharmac yesterday. Rotavirus mainly affects children. It causes illness and diarrhoea which can require hospital treatment and in severe cases be fatal. Pharmac medical director Dr John Wyeth said the vaccine would cost an estimated $6.3 million a year and could avoid up to 1200 hospital admissions. - APNZ

Ashburton cable layer Alastair Miller is supporting the memory of his sister, Irene, and many others by shaving his hair for child cancer. Ms Miller died of leukaemia 22 years ago. She was 37 years old. Mr Miller said they were emotionally and financially hard times, especially as there was no funding to help out. “It’s pretty tough. And if you can put a smile on (the children’s) face, that’s great.” “There’s quite few people I know with cancer ... it’s a horrible disease.” “It’s incredible what they go through. They don’t want it, they don’t ask for it, what people go through it’s hard for (other) people to understand it.” Donations to support the cause can be made at companies in town including EA Networks, and CRT or Cates Grain and Seed. ful support from around the community with a number of companies collecting on his behalf and given the length of his hair it is no wonder – it has been 11 months since his last hair cut. Mr Miller’s shave is open to public viewing at the Ashburton Chessboard, on East Street, tomorrow at 4.30pm.

A large magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Southland in the early hours of yesterday. The quake was 25km deep and centred 125km west of Tuatapere. At least 170 people reported feeling the quake, with reports coming as far north as Naenae in Wellington. - APNZ

Child support scheme changes delayed Changes to the child support scheme due to take effect in April have been delayed for 12 months, Revenue Minister Todd McClay says. “Inland Revenue has informed me that because of the complexity of the reforms it needs more time to implement the new

scheme to the high standard that the Government expects,” he said. The changes include an alteration to the formula for calculating child support payments to include both parents’ income and changes to payment, penalties and debt write-off.

Debt from unpaid child support sits at $2.6 billion. The start date for the new calculation formula for child support would apply to assessment periods from 1 April 2015, while the remaining changes would come into effect from 1 April 2016, Mr McClay said. - APNZ

■ SALVATION ARMY HAMPERS

Christmas cheer for local families By Toni Williams

Toni.w@Theguardian.co.nz

Salvation Army volunteers are packing food hampers to bring some cheer to families at Christmas. Salvation Army foodbank coordinator Judith Lilley said 160 Christmas Day hampers were being prepared for families, who at this time of year needed some cheer to ease the load. Mrs Lilley said each hamper was individually made to suit each family’s situation. They ranged from one to two people, two to five people and up to 12 people in each family.

Once finished, goodies would include chicken, potatoes, tinned fruit and meringues and chocolate – everything to make a Christmas Day special. Altrusa International has also supplied books and stationery supplies to be included in the packs. Altrusa literacy committee chair Janet Butterick and committee member Alison Quinn said throughout the year members had collected new and preloved books to distribute. It was the second year the service group had supported the programme as they encouraged children to read.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT

Driving charges earn community work sentence The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday: Nathan Toamiarangi Haiku, 33, of Hampstead was convicted and sentenced to 120 hours of community work for driving while disqualified and convicted and discharged on a charge of failing to surrender his driver’s licence. Jane Ratu Hemi, 60, of Allenton, was sentenced to 75 hours of community work, six month supervision with special conditions to attend anger management counselling, on a representative charge of child assault. The court was told Hemi had been helping care for a 14-yearold relative, to assist his mother. His challenging behaviour included using synthetic cannabis, running away and shoplifting. Hemi was charged with slapping him on two occasions, and poking him with a table fork on another. She no longer cares for the boy. Brookes Stephen Namana, of Ashburton, admitted a charge of domestic assault. He was convicted and ordered to pay $200 to St John. If he produces the receipt before January 27 the matter will be discharged. The court was told Namana’s former partner arrived home intoxicated and badgered him for several hours, preventing him from sleeping. When he attempted to leave she punched

him on the nose. While Namana was dealing with his bleeding nose, the complainant used his clean washing to wipe blood off the bench – at that point he “lost it”, pushing her on to the bed and punching her in the stomach. Namana collected some clothing, and went outside to wait for police to arrive, when he admitted hitting her. Attempts to organise a restorative justice conference failed, as the complainant could not be contacted. Hayden Michael Crawford, 25, of Hampstead was convicted and ordered to come up if called by the court, on a charge of breaching a protection order. Crawford text messaged his former partner asking if his daughter could call him. The matter of access is now being dealt with by another court. A Methven couple who appeared to face charges of child assault were remanded on bail to go through the restorative justice process before they return to court for sentencing on March 17. Brooke Anthony Monson, 18, of Chertsey, was convicted and discharged on a breach of community work charge. Eruera Jacob Toko Rawiri, 24, of Ashburton, was convicted and discharged on a breach of community work charge. Calvin Maurice McSeveny, 45, of Mayfield, admitted driving with an excess breath alco-

hol level of 715 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 715mcg/l) when the legal adult limit is 400mcg, and a second charge of offensive behaviour. He was fined $900, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay court costs of $130 on the drink driving matter, and fined $150 on the latter charge. He was also ordered to obtain and use a zero alcohol licence on the completion of his disqualification. The court was told an intoxicated McSeveny drove into a camping ground and urinated in front of campers, including a number of children; when the manager complained McSeveny abused him. McSeveny’s claims that he was unaware people could see him were quickly rebutted by Judge Maze, who called his behaviour shameful, and told him he should not have been driving in any case. Lance Phillip Wickcliff, 45, of Hampstead, admitted charges of assaulting a police officer, refusing to supply a blood sample for alcohol analysis, driving while disqualified and careless use of a motor vehicle. Wickcliffe has an extensive court record of drink driving and refusing blood samples. Defence lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said he was deeply ashamed and extremely remorseful. After an extended period of abstinence, Wickcliff had begun drinking again, however he had now re-engaged with counselling agencies, and sought help with medical problems. Judge

Maze was handed a medical certificate verifying his serious health problems. He was sentenced to 130 hours of community work, disqualified indefinitely, and ordered to obtain and use a zero alcohol licence for three years when the indefinite disqualification is removed. In addition Judge Maze imposed an intensive supervision clause for 12 months, to include judicial monitoring. “You and I are going to walk this path together – and if I’m not satisfied with your progress you can be recalled,” she told him. Andrew Charles Tillier, 25, of Tinwald, was convicted of drink driving (EBA 658mcg/l). He was fined $500, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay court costs of $130. Matthew McEwen Kietzmann, 21, of Methven admitted driving with an excess blood alcohol level of 84 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, when the legal adult limit is 80. He was fined $400, disqualified from driving for six months, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and analyst fees of $90. He was also told to obtain a zero-alcohol licence for three years on completion of his disqualification period. Vernon Mac Neilson Te Moananui, 18, of Ashburton, was convicted for drink driving (EBA 538mcg/l). He was fined $400, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to

pay court costs of $130. Aimee Meshele Aitken, 22, of Ashburton was convicted of driving while her licence was suspended. She was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months. Tyler Kevin Robb, 21, of Coldstream was convicted and discharged for driving while his licence was suspended. Robb was due to get his licence back in five hours when he was pulled over by police. Philip Lewis Andrew Kirkman, 25, of Netherby appeared on charges of obstructing police, intentional damage and disorderly behaviour. He was remanded on bail to reappear on January 27. Brendon John Green, 35, of Ashburton was convicted on a charge of aggravated drink driving (EBA 605mcg/l). It was Green’s fifth conviction for drink driving since 2004. He was remanded on bail, with orders not to drive, to return to court for sentencing on January 27. Judge Maze requested a pre sentence report to include appendices for electronically monitored sentences – but warned Green to come prepared for all options. Mata Tuakoi, 19, of Pendarves admitted drink driving (EBA 744mcg/l) and driving while disqualified – he was remanded on bail for sentencing on February 24. It was his second drink driving related charge in three months.

■ PRINCESS DIANA’S DEATH

In brief

SAS ‘not involved’ There is “no credible evidence” of any SAS involvement in the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Fayed, British police say. In August, Scotland Yard began looking at claims that the couple were murdered by a member of British special forces, but yesterday it ruled out opening a criminal investigation. The allegation is thought to have been made by the former parentsin-law of an ex-soldier, based on information that he talked about in the past. That information was then was passed to the Metropolitan Police via the Royal Military Police. Mohamed al Fayed, Dodi’s father, was “disappointed” by the outcome and will continue his fight “to establish the truth that they were murdered”, his solicitor, Simon McKay, said. He said: “Mr al Fayed will continue his struggle to reveal the truth about the tragedy in Paris which claimed the lives of his eldest son and Princess Diana.” The Met said officers had conducted a “scoping exercise” to assess the “relevance and credibility” of the information provided, and to decide whether it was sufficient to warrant a reopening of the criminal investigation. In a statement, it said: “This assessment included taking statements from a number of individuals and reviewing records. As part

of the scoping officers were given unprecedented access to Special Forces Directorate records. “Every reasonable line of inquiry was objectively pursued in order to fully evaluate any potential evidence. The final conclusion is that, whilst there is a possibility the alleged comments in relation to the SAS’s involvement in the deaths may have been made, there is no credible evidence to support a theory that such claims had any basis in fact. “Therefore the MPS are satisfied there is no evidential basis upon which to open any criminal investigation or to refer the matter back to HM Coroner.” But McKay branded the “socalled scoping exercise” “the latest whitewash in a 16-year cover-up”. He added: “The Met should never have been given charge of the case as they had every incentive to return the result we now see.” Diana, Dodi and chauffeur Henri Paul died after their Mercedes crashed in a Paris tunnel after leaving the Ritz Hotel on the morning of August 31, 1997. The hearing into the deaths of Diana and Dodi lasted more than 90 days, with evidence from around 250 witnesses. The inquests concluded on April 7, 2008, with a jury returning a verdict that the “People’s Princess” and her boyfriend were unlawfully Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car accident in Paris ap photo killed. - PA 16 years ago.

■ CHINA

Terrorists blamed for deadly clash China has blamed organised terrorists for a clash that left two police and 14 suspects dead in China’s far western region of Xinjiang, but a Uighur exile group reports “indiscriminate shooting” of “demonstrators” by police. Following the clash late on Sunday, police in Xinjiang’s Shufu county detained six suspected members of a 20-strong group that began planning terrorist activities in August, the regional government’s Tianshan Net website reported. According to a preliminary police investigation, the incident was an “organised, premeditated, violent terrorist attack”, the report said, saying the group was led by Hasan Ismail, an ethnic Uighur according to his name. The group promoted religious extremism and made explosives and firearms for use in

terrorist attacks, the government’s Xinhua news agency quoted a Xinjiang police official as saying. The police were attacked with knives and explosive devices as they were searching for Hasan Ismail in Sayi Bage, or Saybad, village, the reports said. Some Uighur campaigners said police had broken into a house where members of the ethnic minority were gathering, and opened fire first. The Munich-based World Uighur Congress said it was “able to ascertain from sources on the

ground that two of the demonstrators were teenagers, who were killed due to indiscriminate shooting by the security forces”. The group said it had “not uncovered the reasons for which the demonstrators were protesting”. US-based Radio Free Asia quoted Uighur villagers as saying by telephone that several members of one family and a local police chief were believed to be among the dead. Shufu county is in Xinjiang’s westernmost district of Kashgar near China’s borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan and several Central Asian nations, about 3000 kilometres from Beijing. State media have reported several deadly clashes in recent months between police and ethnic Uighurs, a mainly Muslim group who make up around 8

million of Xinjiang’s 21.8 million people. Meanwhile China’s state-run media yesterday called for “ethnic healing” in the restive region. The unusually-conciliatory editorial in the Global Times newspaper urged authorities to encourage travel to the region and to recruit more Uighur police. Measures should also be taken to ensure that Uighurs “are made to believe that they are trusted members of the Chinese populace”, said the newspaper, which is close to China’s ruling Communist Party and often takes a hardline stance. “Winning the hearts of the public in sensitive areas has decisive significance,” the paper wrote, adding that “the whole country should be dedicated to dissolving the estrangement” between Uighurs and China’s Han majority. - DPA/AFP

‘Discovery machine’ Europe will place a billion-dollar bet on a space telescope designed to provide the biggest and most detailed 3D map of the Milky Way. If all goes well, a Soyuz-STBFregat rocket will lift off from Kourou, French Guiana, tomorrow, hoisting the observatory Gaia on a five-year exploration that may sweep away notions of our place in the galaxy. The most sophisticated space telescope ever built by Europe, the 740 million-euro ($A1.15 billion) gadget goes by the unofficial epithet of “discovery machine”. - AFP

Family witness murder With his family getting ready for bed, there was a knock at Joe Antoun’s front door. The convicted armed robber and extortionist answered and was immediately shot up to five times as his wife and twin six-year-old daughters watched in horror. Police say the 50-year-old died instantly at his home in Strathfield, in Sydney’s inner west on Monday night. They are looking for his killer, who they believe is a man wearing a hooded jumper and dark pants. Superintendent Mark Jones described the “callous act” as a targeted shooting, and says police don’t believe Mr Antoun’s family or others should fear for their lives. - AAP

More Lockerbie charges The former head of the FBI believes more people will be charged over the Lockerbie bombing. Robert Mueller, who finished a 12-year spell as FBI director in September, said progress had been made in the investigation since the Libyan revolution in 2011. Abdelbaset alMegrahi is the only person to have been convicted of the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Scotland in which 270 people were killed on December 21 1988, nearly 25 years ago. Megrahi, who was released from jail by the Scottish government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, died last year protesting his innocence. Since the fall of the Gaddafi regime, British and US investigators have been working to establish if there are other individuals in Libya who could be brought to trial for their involvement in the attack. - PA

Websites ‘erased’ North Korea’s state news outlets have erased tens of thousands of articles archived on their websites, following the execution of leader Kim Jong-Un’s uncle, according to a watchdog site. About 35,000 articles have disappeared from the website of the North’s official Korean Central News Agency, as well as 65,000 articles in Spanish, English, Chinese and Japanese, according to Frank Feinstein, an analyst who tracks the North’s online media for US-based website NK News. About 20,000 articles were also removed from the archives of the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, it said. It was not clear if the deletion was permanent, but the move followed the purge and execution last week of Kim’s uncle and one-time political mentor, Jang Song-thaek. - AFP

Interest rate swaps The Commerce Commission intends to issue legal proceedings against three of the major Australian banks over their sale of interest rate swap contracts to farmers, which the regulator says may have breached the Fair Trading Act. The commission intends to file proceedings against ASB Bank, ANZ Bank New Zealand, and Westpac New Zealand in March next year, and is also looking at other institutions which sold the swaps, chairman Mark Berry said in a statement. The regulator has told the banks it thinks there is sufficient evidence the banks breached legislation, citing sections of the act relating to misleading and deceptive conduct generally. - APNZ

■ ULTRA-FAST BROADBAND

The E&Y Australia report agreed with the Chorus estimate of a $1 billion funding shortfall between now and 2020, when the UFB rollout is meant to be complete, but suggested that could be cut to between $200 million and $250 million with dividend cuts, higher borrowing, savings and revenue increases. “Chorus has been enjoying a ‘golden summer’, which is clearly reflected in the high levels of profitability and returns to shareholders, that couldn’t last,” said CallPlus chief executive Mark Callander in a statement. “A cultural change from monopoly-type behaviour is well overdue and it seems that everyone, but Chorus, knew this had to end.” Dekker said the E&Y report gave little new detail beyond confirming that Chorus “requires assistance.” “There is limited detail on how Chorus will change the business plan (half of the savings) and no visibility provided on the important areas of UFB capex and debt headroom,” he wrote, classifying Chorus shares as a “hold” with a price target over the next year of $1.58. The shares rose slightly yesterday morning to $1.45. - APNZ

Chorus is likely to delay any new capital-raising to help fund the ultra-fast broadband rollout until after the Commerce Commission completes its redetermination of copper networkbased broadband pricing under an alternative methodology, says Deutsche Bank. In a research note to clients following the weekend release of the government-ordered Ernst & Young Australia report on Chorus’s UFB funding challenge, research analyst Arie Dekker says Chorus will be targeting annual operational and capital expenditure savings of around $80 million to $90 million a year, but that these will carry significant business risks. “Requiring customers to pay upfront for non-contracted connection capex may impact competitive positioning; reduced service levels across products and provisioning might drive customers to consider alternative options,” said Dekker. Meanwhile, telco provider CallPlus, trading as Slingshot, issued a statement calling on Chorus to stop overstating the size of its problems and start taking the “prudent” actions it should have seen were necessary long before the Commerce Commission determination which cut prices for copper networkbased broadband pricing more heavily than anticipated.

Chorus targeting expenditure savings

The announcements came as the Treasury forecasts larger fiscal surpluses over the same period than were envisaged in the 2013 Budget, published in May, and a projected fall in net core Crown debt from a peak of 26.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2014/15 to an estimated 16.9 percent in 2019/20.- APNZ

17/1

The government raised its forecast track for economic growth versus the 2013 Budget, saying the Christchurch rebuild, an improving labour market, migrant inflows and booming export commodities will make up for weaker trading partner growth. Gross domestic product will accelerate to 2.7 percent in the year ending March 31, 2014, before peaking at 3.6 percent in 2015, up from the Treasury’s May forecasts of 2.4 percent and 3 percent respectively, according to the Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update. Growth slows to 2.7 percent, 2 percent and 2.2 percent in 2016 through 2018. The Treasury’s latest forecasts are a tad rosier than those released last week by the Reserve Bank, which had GDP peaking at 3 percent in 2015, though the message is similar to the bank’s language of “considerable momentum” in the economy, terms of trade at a 40-year high and rising household spending and construction activity. - APNZ

conditions, as previously announced. Tables accompanying the announcement show that between the 2013/14 and 2017/18 financial years, the DMO expects to borrow a total of $34 billion in bonds and repay bonds worth $23.9 billion, for a net bond issuance of just on $10 billion.

rent financial year,” the NZDMO statement says. The domestic bond programme in the current financial year will now reduce from a projected $10 billion to $8 billion, while up to $3 billion of April 2015 nominal bonds will be repurchased in the second half of this financial year, subject to market conditions. “Both gross and net bond issuance are expected to be a cumulative $4 billion lower than the Budget 2013 forecast,” the DMO said. “The April 2027 nominal bond, previously being considered for launch in 2013/13, will now be delayed until 2014/15 at the earliest.” This year’s bond tender programme will continue to include $5 billion of inflation-indexed bonds, subject to market

Sky City Entertainment’s share price dropped by 3.1 per cent in morning trade yesterday after the company said its “normalised” net profit would fall in the first half, due mostly to the New Zealand dollar’s appreciation against the Australian dollar. By late morning, the stock was trading at $3.77, down 12c from Monday’s close. The Australasian casino owneroperator said its normalised net profit for the the six months to December 31 was expected to be in a range of $65 million to $68m, compared to $72m in the previous first half period. The prior period profit figure excluded proceeds from the Christchurch casino, which was sold last year. - APNZ

Improving government finances mean the Treasury will issue $2 billion less in government bonds in the current financial year, will buy back up to $3 billion of bonds on issue, and will delay the launch of a new longdated bond until the next financial year, at the earliest. A statement from the New Zealand Debt Management Office accompanying yesterday’s Half Year Fiscal and Economic Update effectively concedes that the government over-borrowed for its expected financing needs last year, as its cash position improved faster than expected. “The changes ... are in response to a $5 billion reduction in the Crown’s forecast funding requirements, as a result of a stronger cash position from the 2012/13 year and further improvements forecast in the cur-

OUR VIEW

Farmers play a high-risk game of chance

Coen Lammers EDITOR

M

id Canterbury crop farmers who have recently converted to dairy or other livestock farming must be feeling relieved after another nasty demonstration by Mother Nature. Monday’s hailstorm, torrential downpour and mini tornado once again showed how vulnerable our crop farmers are among weather patterns that are getting more extreme by the year. Whether it is due to climate change and whether that climate change is man-made or purely cyclical may be a point of debate, but few would argue that severe weather events seem to hit the district on a more regular basis. Monday’s episode around Mayfield was just another chapter in some crazy weather patterns bringing extreme amounts of wind, snow, rain, or dry spells. Many farmers, crop and dairy farmers, are still counting the cost of the September 10 storms that damaged property and irrigators around Mid Canterbury and some have been facing double whammies. The poor crop farmers around Mayfield may have been hoping for high returns on crops like carrots, bok choi, pak choi and mustard, but Monday’s hailstorm would have ruined a season’s work for many of them. This particular incident underlines the high-risk game some farmers are in. When the going is good, they and their wider community reap the benefits. When adverse extreme weather comes along their paddocks and therefore annual income can be destroyed in a matter of minutes. The violence of Monday’s hailstorm and the small tornado was extraordinary, but seeing that exactly the same spot was hit by a tornado less than a year ago, must make some farmers reassess their risk factors. Some may decide that the bad luck must come to an end, while others may opt for less vulnerable crops or move out of the cropping business altogether. Many non-farmers are often a bit envious of their rural cousins when the seasons are prosperous. They tend to forget that these same farmers also end up standing in destroyed fields, wondering how they are going to pay their bills.

Thanks to all involved in mega Christmas in the park, a really great evening.

Bike stolen Thanks to the person that broke into the work yard and stole my sons push bike that was locked. Now my son has no bike for Xmas.

CRUMB

Thank you to our councillors who are questioning, on our behalf, the cost over-run for the stadium. Was that how the successful tender from Ashburton Contracting Ltd was significantly lower than any other? So the council has to pay extra to its own contracting business. Well well. And as for overs and unders on all projects – any

Council sham What an absolute sham and disgrace some of our senior members of council governance have become. At a full council meeting on November 28 in front of 40 members of the public, Cr Totty answered a point of order and mayoral question with a blatant misrepresentation. A subsequent lack of reprimand has been further exacerbated in the December 12 meeting as Cr Totty’s low-key admission he “misrepresented the facts” was excused by the mayor in a weak display of leadership. Even further, not only has

the mayor set the bar that misrepresentation by councillors is acceptable, but also lowered and demeaned his post by trying to dishonour and discredit Cr Cutforth with several trivial no consequence points of order. Outrageously, misrepresentation apparently is acceptable, but not standing to speak, nor addressing Your Worship is not! In the most recent meeting too, Cr Totty excused himself from Ashburton Museum discussion under the conflict of interest clause. His ongoing volunteer budget and advisory work, in vogue since 2009 has ignored a special interest status for him that in truth has been the difference between the construction or not of a new museum building. re you ready for Christmas? I’m not at the time of writing this but I hope to be by the time you read it. That Christmas is almost upon us really came home to me during the Ashburton Business Association Christmas Parade. The local businesses who belong to the association give their time and resources each year to organise a wonderful event appreciated by all. You only had to look at the faces of the children lined up along five blocks of East Street to know how much this parade is enjoyed by our community. There is a big volunteer input from across the district into this event. From the Ashburton Silver Band, to the numerous cultural groups, car and tractor enthusiasts (even a tractor from Mayfield), local fire and ambulance representatives and many more. The Christian message of Christmas was represented by the nativity group and Father Christmas had his usual place of honour at the end of the parade, bringing the traditional good cheer. After the parade I was honoured to be at the opening of the Ashburton Pottery Society’s new clubrooms in Tinwald. This modern new facility replaces the earthquake affected Kirk House. The Pottery Society is another example of a group of enthusiasts providing a facility and an activity that enriches our district. The quality and variety of work on display was simply amazing. The holiday period is often a time when we make plans to try something new in our lives in the coming year – to challenge ourselves and expand our horizons. Our district is blessed with many community organisations, like the Pottery Society, that enable us to do this. On a different note, I recently attended the launch of Think First, a youth-driven project being run by Safer Ashburton

District that aims to reduce bullying in the district and encourage positive social behaviour. Think First promotes existing anti-bullying programmes and initiatives and provides ways to empower both bullies and victims to make positive changes in their lives and seek help from appropriate channels. Some people do not even realise that what they are doing is bullying. Bullying is not necessarily physical; it can be verbal or emotional. The project is also looking to remove the stigma often found in rural towns regarding people seeking help or assistance. As a community we need to support and encourage our family,

friends and neighbours who seek this kind of assistance. Christmas is a good time to reflect on these types of issues. Gathering with family and friends to share in the season’s festivities and good will should bring home to us how important a positive community is to the human spirit. I congratulate Safer Ashburton District for taking the initiative to provide yet another service to support the community. John Hobbs, the co-ordinator, has really put his heart and soul into this project. For most of us the holiday season is a time for being with family and friends and a time for relaxation. The council

continues to provide most of its services to our community over the holiday period and have staff and contractors rostered on to do this. I would like to acknowledge the commitment of those staff and contractors who keep our services running over the holiday season. I am looking forward to 2014 as a year that will bring new challenges and opportunities for our community and one in which we continue to build on our reputation as a great place to be. On behalf of the council I wish everyone in our district our very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Tactix players dish up the goods It was a food tasting stand with a difference for Ashburton New World shoppers on Saturday. They not only got to taste some delicious fare courtesy of product promotions, but got to chat to Canterbury Tactix netballers at the same time. The two netballers - Anna

Thompson and Mwai Kumwenda (right), who also represents her national side, the Malawi Queens – are pictured with shoppers (from left) Hannah Doig, 6, Laura Doig, 8, and Nikki Read. Tactix members have been undertaking various tastings

It’s important to choose the right fish for the dish

W

hen you feel like something that’s a little lighter to eat, fish fits the bill. It’s not the cheapest source of protein around but it’s worth splashing out occasionally to try something new and different. A great fish dish doesn’t always have to start with the most expensive species; the cheaper fish are often just as good. More than with meat, however, it’s important to choose a fish with flesh that suits the style of dish you’re planning – dense, fine or flaky they will all shine when cooked in the way that suits them best.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Red curry prawn and pineapple skewers 2 to 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped 2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated/finely chopped 3T red curry paste 400gm tinned coconut milk 6cm piece lemon grass, smashed 4-5 kaffir lime leaves 2t fish sauce 2t soy sauce Juice of 1/2 lime 1T palm or brown sugar 500gm green king prawns, peeled and deveined 400gm pineapple chunks Wood skewers, soaked overnight in water

Coconut crusted fish 4 x 180g gurnard fillets salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ C rice flour 3 egg whites, beaten with 1 tbsp water 2C shredded coconut ½ telegraph cucumber, deseeded and diced 1C cherry tomatoes, halved ¼ C fresh mint leaves, chopped juice of 1 lime 3T extra virgin olive oil ¼ C butter, melted 2 lemons, halved width-wise extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling ■ Season each fish fillet with salt and pepper. ■ Dust with rice flour, dip into egg white mixture and coat in coconut. ■ Set aside in the refrigerator (to allow egg white to set, making the crust stick better). ■ Place the cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and mint leaves into a medium-sized bowl and toss to-

gether. Tess with lime juice and olive oil and season to taste. Set aside. Place frying-pan onto a medium heat, add the melted butter. Pan fry the fish until golden, turning once. Add the lemon halves to the frying pan cut side down, and allow to caramelise alongside the fish. Lace a mound of salad on to each plate. Place the coconut crusted fish on top of the salad, drizzle with olive oil, and garnish with caramelised lemons.

■ Add chopped garlic, ginger and red curry paste to a hot frypan with a little oil. ■ Saute for a minute on low/medium heat. ■ Add 1/4 cup coconut milk and continue to saute. ■ Slowly add in more coconut milk over the next few minutes until 3/4 of the tin is used. ■ Add lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sugar continue to stir. ■ Sauce should cook for another 15

to 20 minutes on low heat. ■ Adjust seasoning, if necessary. Cool to room temperature. ■ On the bamboo skewers, alternate one prawn with one piece of pineapple. ■ Brush filled skewers with red curry sauce on both sides, allowing 15 minutes to marinate. ■ Reserve extra sauce for basting on grill, or dipping. ■ Grill for 4-5 minutes per side, until done.

Fish with tomato cous cous 1 1/2 C couscous 3 medium tomatoes, chopped 1/2 C sundried tomatoes, chopped 2T parsley or coriander, chopped Juice of 2 limes 3T extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 white-fleshed fish fillets 1T Moroccan spice blend Extra lime halves, to serve ■ Place couscous in a heat-proof bowl. ■ Pour over 1 1/2 cups of boiling water, stir, then cover with plastic wrap. ■ Set aside for 10 minutes to steam and soften, then fluff up with a fork. ■ Stir tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, parsley or coriander, lime juice and olive oil into couscous. Season well with salt and pepper, stirring to combine. Set aside. ■ Dust fish fillets lightly all over with spice blend. ■ Heat a little oil in a nonstick frying pan ■ Fry fish fillets for 2 to 3 minutes on each side fish will flake easily, indicating it is cooked. ■ Serve the fish on top of prepared couscous, with lime halves on the

side to squeeze over.

Fish tacos 1t vegetable oil 1 green chilli, chopped 1 leek, well rinsed and chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 250ml chicken stock 2 large tomatoes, diced 1/2 t ground cumin 750g any firm white fish fillets juice of 1 lime 12 warmed corn tortillas ■ Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat ■ Fry the chilli, leek and garlic until tender and lightly browned. ■ Season with salt and pepper. ■ Stir in the chicken stock and tomatoes and season with cumin. ■ Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. ■ Place the choice of fish into the mixture. ■ Sprinkle with lime juice. ■ Cook 10 minutes or until the fish is easily flaked with a fork. ■ Wrap in warmed corn tortillas to serve with the suggested accompaniments above.

Fish fillets with caper butter sauce 1T olive oil 500g firm white fish steaks 1/2 C white wine 1 clove garlic, chopped 60g butter salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 3T capers, with liquid ■ Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium high heat. ■ Fry the fish steaks on both sides until nicely browned. ■ Remove from pan, and set aside.

■ Pour the wine into the pan, and scrape any browned bits from the bottom. ■ Let the wine reduce by more than half, then stir in the garlic, butter and capers. ■ Season with salt and pepper to taste ■ Let the sauce simmer for a minute to blend the flavours. ■ Return the steaks to the pan, and coat them with sauce. ■ Cook until fish flakes easily with a fork. ■ Serve fish immediately with the sauce from the pan poured over it.

Cajun style blackened snapper 2T paprika 2t cayenne pepper 1 1/2 t ground white pepper 1 1/2 t ground black pepper 1T salt 2t onion powder 2t garlic powder 1t dried thyme 1t dried oregano 4 fillets of snapper 1 1/2 C butter, melted ■ In a small bowl, mix combine all ingredients except fish and butter ■ Heat a large cast iron skillet over high heat for 10 minutes, or until extremely hot. ■ Dip fish into melted butter, and sprinkle each fillet generously with the seasoning mixture. ■ Place the fish fillets in the hot skillet. Pour 1T of butter over each fillet. ■ Cook until the coating on the underside of the fillet turns black, 3 to 5 minutes. ■ Turn the fish over. ■ Pour another tablespoon of butter over the fish, and cook for 2 minutes, or until fish flakes easily with a fork.

Boyle in top form New Zealand swimmers Lauren Boyle and Matthew Stanley scored wins on the second night of finals at the Queensland championships in Brisbane on Monday night. The pair won their respective finals in the 400m freestyle, both on or under qualifying standards for next year’s Commonwealth Games, which is excellent reward given their extremely heavy training load at their camp on the Gold Coast this month. Boyle took out the women’s race in 4:07.52 which is on the qualifying standard for the Commonwealth Games as the world championship medallist works towards Glasgow. - APNZ

Sharks fined $1 million The Cronulla Sharks have been hit with a proposed $1 million fine and their coach Shane Flanagan provisionally suspended for 12 months, as the NRL took a heavy hand to the club’s controversial 2011 supplement program. NRL chief executive Dave Smith said the club had failed many of the players in regards to safeguarding their health and welfare, adding that they were exposed to significant potential risk. Smith said $400,000 of the proposed $1 million fine would be suspended if the club met a series of conditions. - AAP

Gatland extends deal New Zealander Warren Gatland has extended his contract as head coach of Wales until after the 2019 World Cup, the Welsh Rugby Union announced yesterday. The 50-yearold former Ireland and Wasps coach took up the post in 2007, since leading Wales to Six Nations success in 2008, 2012 and 2013, as well as the semi-finals at the 2011 World Cup. “I am proud and delighted to have been chosen by the Welsh Rugby Union to take charge of Wales teams for the next two Rugby World Cup tournaments,” Gatland said in a statement. - AFP

Roma, Milan draw Francesco Totti ended a two-month injury absence for Roma but had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw away to Milan, who had Sulley Muntari to thank for a late leveller at the San Siro yesterday. Roma travelled to struggling Milan looking to close the gap on leaders Juventus to three points after they had opened up a six-point gap with an eighth consecutive win on Sunday. But despite bossing Milan in almost every department, Roma had to settle for their fifth draw in six matches to remain second, five points behind. - AFP

Derby hope on track A not so well-kept secret will open his Group 1 New Zealand Derby campaign at his home meeting at Matamata today. The word has been out on Lifeline Express for some time and he will make his muchanticipated debut in the Oxford Thoroughbreds 1200. Victory and the future expected progress of the colt will also serve as a poignant reminder of his great father Zabeel, whose retirement was announced this week by Sir Patrick Hogan. Lifeline Express is trained by Paul and Kris Shailer, who have taken the three-year-old along quietly with the March 1 classic in mind. - APNZ

They were taking part in the inaugural New Zealand Open Day, with players paying $5 for the chance to win tickets to the NZ Open in Queenstown next year. First Tee CEO Vicki Watson said the money raised would help the charity deliver The First Tee school and afterschool programmes in each region. “All monies raised regionally stay in that region and so it’s their local children who’ll directly benefit directly.” Returning to Queenstown next year, the 2014 New Zealand Open from February 27-March 2, will be played in a ProAm format incorporating 132 professional players and 132 amateur players over the first two days. Hayden Roulston is looking to become part of an elite national road cycling group.

Cyclists head for the hills Ashburton cycling fans will have a chance to watch home-boy Hayden Roulston race this summer when he competes over a 184km course on the Cashmere Hills on January 12. It will be a double whammy for local viewers with the women’s 120km field including local Lauren Ellis. Roulston and Ellis will be taking part in the Calder Stewart national road cycling championships. If Roulston wins that would make him part of an elite national road cycling group with four titles. The Trek Factory Team professional would join Nick Carter and Jack Swart on four wins and only behind Gordon McCauley who has five victories. Roulston turns 33 on the day of the time trial, January 10, and victory in the road race would again give him the opportunity to wear the national jersey on the World Tour.

He will be joined on the start line by fellow World Tour riders George Bennett (Nelson), who has moved from Roulston’s team to the Cannondale Pro Cycling, team-mate Jesse Sergent and Garmin-Sharp rider Jack Bauer. Bauer, the 2010 winner in the first year on the Christchurch circuit, has moved to Christchurch as his base for the next few weeks before heading to Australia. Roulston and Sergent are back in the training seat, joining the new-look re-named Trek Factory Team in their training camp in Spain this week while Bennett is in Italy for the training camp for his new Cannondale Pro Cycling outfit. The 50-strong peloton also includes 2012 winner James Williamson, two-time Under-23 winner Michael Vink, national criterium champion Michael Northey and London Olympic

track riders Shane Archbold, Westley Gough and Marc Ryan. A smaller select women’s field includes several Pro Tour riders led by five-time world championship medallist Linda Villumsen, her Wiggle-Honda team-mate Emily Collins, Be Pink young star Georgia Williams and the experienced TIBCO team riders Joanne Kiesanowski and Rushlee Buchanan. The women’s field, to race over 120kms, also includes Olympic track riders Jaime Nielsen and Lauren Ellis. There are 26 in the men’s under-23 division led by defending champion and recent Tour of Southland winner, James Oram. The time trials for all divisions are on January 10 at Lincoln, the women’s road race is on January 11 and men on January 12, based at Pioneer Stadium and supported by the Christchurch City Council.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) Now, in the final weeks of the year, you’re finally able to start looking ahead, getting excited about what the New Year might bring. TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) At a time of year when relationships are put to the test, the Moon has returned to give emotional and intuitive responses a voice. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 22) While the past is littered with defining moments that took you by surprise, choose to see the future littered with just as many moments. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 24) Today marks a real turning point for your professional year, releasing the hand brake that has been holding things back, just as work tensions have eased back. LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) There is a new sense of defiance kicking in from today, determined to make sure that life doesn’t become all work and no play. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 23) Yesterday’s Full Moon played the last professional wildcard of the year, as the Moon leaves your career sector he ends all the cosmic input for the year. LIBRA (SEP 23 – OCT 23) Today marks a real turning point on the relationship front, with Uranus’ direct turn in your relationship sector allowing you to shift focus to the road ahead. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 24) While Uranus’ direct turn in your work sector released the handbrake on work matters, he’s in no hurry to see any real traction until the New Year. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 24 – DEC 21) Uranus turns direct in your romantic sector today, creating a real turning point on both the relationship front and for matters of the heart. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20) You’ve reached the point where the inclination to keep working is likely to drop off giving you a chance to shift your professional focus to the big picture. AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 19) Mentally and within your communications it’s time to shift your focus from the rear view mirror to the road ahead. PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20) In the closing days of your professional year there are signs the tide is turning on the income front, though the real benefits might not be felt until the New Year.

Victory for Australia Australia have put the pain of three straight Ashes-series defeats behind them, crushing England by 150 runs in the third Test yesterday to regain the urn. Michael Clarke’s men needed just 14 days of the fivematch series to win back Test cricket’s most famous trophy, which England have held since 2009. England were out for 353 in their second innings in the post-lunch session on the final day of the third Test at the WACA Ground.

The one that got away BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Christchurch-born Ben Stokes yesterday achieved what no other Englishman could during their increasingly difficult Ashes series in Australia - score a century. The 22-year-old, who moved with his family to England at the age of 12, struck the milestone at the Waca in Perth yesterday afternoon - his first ton in only his second test. It is his ninth first class century. It came from 159 balls and in the most difficult of circumstances. With the cracks on the dry pitch widening by the day, Stokes began the morning on 72, with his team 253-5; played and missed several deliveries, and was almost run out on 90 by Ryan Harris. Stokes, who in the last test at Adelaide was caught up in a dispute with Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, probably learned his nononsense attitude from his father, Ged, a former Kiwis league player

who left Christchurch to coach Workington Town on the Cumbrian coast in the north of England. Ben’s skills as a cricketer quickly became apparent, the allrounder signing with Durham and batting at No4 for the county. He has been compared with former England allrounder Andrew Flintoff due to his clean hitting, although Stokes bats left-handed, and has received praise from team-mate and opposition alike. “He was outstanding,” Ian Bell said yesterday. The way he’s shown he can play quick bowling, the way he hits down the ground. “And just that attitude with the ball. I never see him moan about anything. He just gets on with it, runs in all day, bowls good pace. The potential for the future looks massive.” According to the Guardian, Stokes speaks with an accent “which he describes as ‘Geordie’, even though it still contains traces of Cumbria and occasionally Kiwi”. - APNZ
