Five things that may interest you

It’s all in the foam Many people can easily carry a fully loaded tray of beers to their leaner but, give them a couple of takeaway coffees without lids, there’s drink all over the floor. It turns out coffee really is more prone to sloshing out all over the show – and some American physicists have discovered it all comes down to foam. The Smithsonian Magazine this week reported that, just as solid foam reduces noise by absorbing sound waves, liquid foam does the same for motion. The researchers discovered foam’s insulating effects by performing controlled lab experiments on coffee and beer. The more foam that was present, the more energy was absorbed and the less sloshing occurred. Just a few layers of bubbles were enough to make a difference, but the thicker the head, the less likely the spill.

Message of peace from Russia Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris has a Christmas tree this year thanks to an unusual patron: the Russian government. Amid high tension between Russia and the West over violence in Ukraine, Russia’s ambassador to France says the “tree is a message of peace”. When the rector of Notre Dame told foreign embassies this month that the cathedral needed money for the huge tree, Russia was the first to offer. Ambassador Alexander Orlov told The Associated Press this week, “we thought this would be a rather nice present.” He wouldn’t say how much it cost. He insisted it has nothing to do with politics or a troubled deal to sell a French warship to Russia, stalled because of Ukraine. Still, Notre Dame officials promise to seek a Ukrainian-funded tree next year.

Madonna returns to Malawi as a VIP Madonna is in the African country of Malawi for the first time since she had a falling out with the former president last year. Madonna yesterday launched a 50-bed pediatrics ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre. Sarah Ezzy, director of the charity Raising Malawi, said the new facility is the first dedicated pediatric intensive care unit in the country. Former Malawi President Joyce Banda had stripped Madonna of her VIP status last year by forcing the singer to check into her private jet as an ordinary passenger. New President Peter Mutharika has restored the singer’s VIP status.

Dem bones A giant ancient penguin far taller than any species alive today has been described for the first time after its fossil remains sat for decades inside an Auckland storage shed. The fossilised bones of the penguin, yet to be named, were found in North Waikato in 1971, but had been largely ignored until recently rediscovered by Massey University zoologist Dr Daniel Thomas. The unusual features of the 28-million-yearold specimen have convinced Dr Thomas it is a new species, and the first of its kind to be discovered in the North Island. Dr Thomas estimates the bird would have stood at 1.3m – slightly taller than the ancient Kairuku penguin discovered in 2012, and about 30cm taller than today’s largest penguin, the emperor. Kidman going to extremes Desperate to get her tiny waist even smaller, Nicole Kidman revealed she actually broke a rib for Moulin Rouge! trying to get into a corset. The Australian, who played the courtesan Satine in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 flick, has explained the painful lengths she went to for the part. “I hurt myself dancing in heels at three in the morning and I fell downstairs,” Kidman said on The Graham Norton Show. “I then re-broke my rib getting into a corset. I had this thing that I wanted to get my waist down to 18 inches, which Vivien Leigh had on Gone with the Wind, and I was just like, ‘tighter, tighter’!” It wasn’t the only tough part about Moulin Rouge! for Kidman, who says singing tunes like Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend wasn’t easy. “Moulin Rouge was really hard for me because singing is not something that comes naturally to me. It is so frightening to have to sing in front of people. I get terrified,” she says.

■ WAKANUI WEATHER BOMB

Hail batters crops Drivers had to negotiate icy roads around the airport for a short time yesterday morning.

michelle.n@theguardian.co.nz

Yesterday’s hailstorms took a toll on vulnerable winter barley and pea crops in Mid Canterbury’s coastal districts. Up to five centimetres fell on arable farmer and contractor Andy Molloy’s property in Ashton, and the marrow fat pea crop took a beating. “The peas, which were just about starting to flower, look like coleslaw,” he said. “I don’t know if the peas will survive it, they will be the most worrying but time will tell on them. Mr Molloy also grows a range of cereal and small seed crops, and the storm is also set to cost him on his winter barley. He reckons he will lose two to three tonne to the hectare off the top the crop, which is about a month off harvest. “It’s the most advanced crop out there at the moment, it’s

WHAT NEXT? still standing but the hail has stripped pickles off it – it hasn’t taken entire heads off like it does sometimes, but we’ve lost the top four-odd pickles of each head.” Clover and maize crops were hammered too, but Mr Molloy said it was early enough in the season for them to bounce back. “It’s an absolute bugger, but we can’t do anything about it,” he said. “For the past couple of months we’ve been saying we’re going to run into big risks this season, the way the weather’s

been – that we are going to get a heap of hail come through.” Crop insurance is too expensive for many farmers to contemplate, Mr Molloy included. “I haven’t got any crops insured,” he said. “Wheat is insured through the wheat board levies, but those crops don’t seem to be too bad, it’s early enough and it hasn’t really affected the wheat. “There will be a fair bit of bruising come out, but at this stage it doesn’t look too bad. “It’s not flash but it’s not a dis-

aster, a couple of inches of rain would have been better.” In the Wakanui area Greg Lovett’s potato, onion and carrot crops bore the brunt of the short but brutal storm. While he won’t know the extent of the damage until today, he said it will have an impact. “It has to have had an impact, but it’s so early in the season the potatoes will just grow a couple of new leaves and grow again. “The carrots and onions will also come back – it will just set them back a bit.”

■ WINZ BUILDING

In brief

Grant would save future rent By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

Community House Mid Canterbury will not need further ratepayer funding in the years after it receives a $500,000 grant from the Ashburton District Council, its chairman assures. The council will soon consider a council committee recommendation to help Community House buy the now-empty, $1.1 million former Winz building on Cass Street. Community House has a conditional agreement to buy the property and settlement is due in January. Council business support

manager Paul Brake told councillors Community House would not need the council’s $30,000 annual grant if the $500,000 pledge was made. However, it remained unclear whether the Community House board could categorically state no additional funding would be needed in the future, Mr Brake reported. Board chair John Driscoll yesterday said the annual grant was used to pay rent for the current building and that rent money would not be needed in the premises. Mr Driscoll said budgets and planning in to the foreseeable future suggested the trust

would not need to ask for additional council funding support. However, the future remained hard to predict. The trust was also seeking further funding from other sources, including Lotteries and Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury. He hoped that funding would be available by mid-January. Another source of income would be rent from tenants. Community House will continue to provide low-cost rental to the social service hubs of Ashburton. The trust hoped Safer Ashburton would be an anchor tenant which, in turn, will help

funding. The property will be owned by Community House Mid Canterbury Trust but it will be a community investment. The report presented to councillors this week said the trust had a windup clause in its constitution so that its assets were vested to the council in the event of it ceasing to operate Mr Driscoll said he hoped a memorial may be set up to the memory of the women shot during the double homicide in the former Winz building September. This would be discussed with their families.

■ ASHBURTON OPERATIC SOCIETY

Police callouts Ashburton Police were kept busy attending domestics this week. They attended one at 12.10am yesterday, and two in the early hours of Thursday morning – 2.10am and 4.30am.

Alarm activated The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out at 10am yesterday to an alarm activation at the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

ATS demolition By mid-morning today, the demolition job at the ATS building on Burnett Street should be completed. Originally due to be completed on Thursday night, strong winds brought the demo to a standstill. Cranes came in to continue the job yesterday, and demolition was expected to get back under way at first light this morning, and be finished by mid-morning. The section of the building, built in 1926, was being demolished due to only sitting at 8 per cent of the building code. ATS plans on rebuilding.

Grease auditions Variety Theatre Ashburton will hold Grease pre-audition dance workshops at the Hampstead School Hall on December 2 and 4 from 7.30pm. The auditions, by appointment only, are on December 6. People wanting to audition for main roles need to also attend the dance workshops. Anyone wanting an audition appointment can contact Nicky Milmine on 308 9249 or 027 544 9524. The uber-cool stage show will run in May 2015.

Boost for operatic room rebuild By toni Williams

toni.w@thegaurdian.Co.nz

The Ashburton Operatic Society’s earthquake-damaged buildings have been injected with a $40,000 funding windfall courtesy of the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury. The society is planning the rebuild of two buildings - its Party People costume hire shop and the society’s storage/rehearsal buildings. Both were damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes. It was expected the first building – the costume hire shop on Victoria Street - would be demolished by Bradfords before Christmas. Party People

is currently operating out of a rear building on Wills Street. Ashburton Operatic Society president Leen Braam said the funding was a generous boost for its existing kitty, especially as it benefited the arts. “It’s amazing, it’s a real great start and well appreciated,” he said. “We are a community organisation and it’s certainly staying in the community and being used for the greater community.” He said plans for the new buildings, which would create a purpose built space for society members, were with the Ashburton District Council. Party

People Costume Hire and the rehearsal building would be adjoining. The rehearsal building would eventually include an exact stage setting to match the dimensions of those at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. However the society is still negotiating with their insurance company about any final pay-out figure. Mr Braam was hopeful of getting more than $500,000 in the settlement. The operatic society was among several Mid Canterbury groups to benefit in the Community Trust’s latest funding round.

In total 15 community organisations in Mid and South Canterbury were given more than $257,000. The Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network was given $5000 towards co-ordinator costs, Mid Canterbury Hockey (NZ) got $4895 towards their participation officer activities at junior level and Age Concern Ashburton received $750 towards a computer upgrade. The Community Trust uses investment returns to fund its philanthropy. It estimated over the past five years it has donated about $1 million to community organisations and their projects.

Ashburton’s Santa Parade looks set to be “much bigger than last year,” but more volunteers would be appreciated. Organiser Carol Johns said the number of entrants – not including costume walkers – has nearly doubled since last year with over 60 registrations. There has been a lot of interest this year she said, from preschools, schools, the Hakatere Marae and the Big Little Theatre Company just to name a few. About 25 more volunteers are needed to wear costumes – which include clowns, Bananas in Pajamas, Shrek and Big Bird. Anyone interested can contact Carol Johns at Hokonui FM. Volunteers will meet at noon in Mona Square on Saturday December 6. There is also preparade entertainment at the chessboard at 11am.

Smith ‘low’ on return Phillip Smith’s lawyer said it would not be in the public interest to charge him for escaping custody. Tony Ellis, who has acted for Smith in the past and received a call from him when he fled the country while on temporary release, said he expected Smith to call him when he arrived back in the country tomorrow morning. Dr Ellis said he thought Smith would be feeling “rather low” about his return. “I would imagine that having successfully escaped and then being captured and then, worse still, being brought back to New Zealand he could be in quite a poor state.” - NZME\

■ SPORTS CLUBS

Bad behaviour risks sponsorship By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury sports teams could lose out on lucrative sponsorship deals if they fail to curb alcohol-fuelled bad behavior. That was the message from the Ashburton Trust, which offers sponsorships to local sports teams, as well as arts and cultur-

al societies, and special interest and education organisations. The drinking culture of sports clubs has been thrust into the spotlight after a coroner’ court hearing into the deaths of two young men killed in a high speed car crash after leaving a rural pub, where they’d been drinking and celebrating

a birthday after rugby practice. Ashburton Trust CEO Giles Beal said teams that displayed bad behavior could “absolutely” lose their sponsorships. The Ashburton Trust had cancelled sponsorships of sports teams in the past because of drunken bad behaviour, he said. Mr Beal said sponsorship

agreements included a requirement that teams displayed appropriate behavior. Local police have also been meeting with sports clubs to discuss how they can improve alcohol-related behavior. Mid-South Canterbury alcohol harm reduction officer Sergeant Grant Lord said police

and sports clubs were working hard to mitigate the harm of alcohol-fuelled bad behavior. “Sports clubs are acutely aware of the damage that their drunken antics cause,” he said. Mr Lord said discussions with clubs were focusing on what they could do about the problem, rather than what police could do.

Event Centre nominated for award The Ashburton Trust Events Centre and its manager have been nominated for prestigious national awards. The centre is one of four finalists in the Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand Small Venue of the Year Award, while manager Roger Farr is one of two finalists in the Rising Star Award. The venue award is open to those of up to 1000 seats. The other finalists are the Airforce Museum, Christchurch; Q Theatre, Auckland and The Great South Pacific Tuning Fork, Auckland. Mr Farr was yesterday thrilled that he and the centre were finalists in awards that set Ashburton alongside some of the best-recognised big-city players in the business. The venue awards were considered by a panel of judges and recognised venues’ achievements as hosts, businesses and their work in the community. The Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand represents 88 venues including 40 theatres, 30 event centres, 10 outdoor stadia and eight convention centres. Its awards are presented on Monday night at a gala evening in Dunedin.

■ EXTENDED TRADING

Retailers rally for longer shopping hours By Caitlin Porter

caitlin.p@theguardian.co.nz

Moves are afoot to formalise extended retail hours in central Ashburton in the lead-up to Christmas. Prompted by calls for longer hours over Christmas and even over the year, retailers were last week willing to talk about opening longer – all it would take was someone taking the initiative. It emerged yesterday some in the central business district have taken the next step and extended their hours, together. New business group Business Mid Canterbury had started gauging interest. So far, that interest was shown in extended opening hours being offered in the Ashburton Arcade and many shops along East Street. Paper Plus Ashburton operator Terry

McNab, a long-time supporter of extended Christmas shopping hours, said businesses should band together and open later. Every year, he enjoyed good, later custom and every year he struggled to answer customers who asked what else was open. “If we all just did it, everyone would know,” he said. Mr McNab commended Richard Wilson, of Sparrows Mens & Ladies Fashions, for pro-actively encouraging the stores in their block to extend their hours. Mr Wilson said a few retailers on his street are still keen to open: “It is not as successful as we would have liked, but it’s still pretty good”. Other retailers including Todds of Ashburton, and the Ashburton Arcade will also add extra hours to their regu-

lar opening times in the period before Christmas. Business Mid Canterbury last week offered to support member businesses as they prepared for the Christmas period. Since then, no new retailer members had signed up. However, he was in talks with retailers and spent time last week canvassing business owners. Opening hours would be promoted next week and it would be great for individual businesses to get on board and extend their hours in the week leading up to Christmas, he said. Mr McNab urged caution. Retailers might not expect a sudden influx of shoppers during the extended hours. “It takes people two to three years to get used to it.”

■ WINZ TRAGEDY

In brief

Workers’ resilience praised Staff at Ashburton’s Work and Income office have been praised for their resilience in returning to work less than three months after two co-workers were shot dead in cold blood. A temporary services centre re-opened on Wednesday just 350m from the old office where the daylight shooting happened on September 1. Front-counter Winz workers Peggy Turukira Noble, 67, and Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, were killed. Co-workers Lindy Louise Curtis, 43, who was was shot in the leg, and Kim Elizabeth Adams survived. Social Development Minister Anne Tolley and Police Minister Michael Woodhouse attended an “informal opening” yesterday at the temporary centre in prefabricated buildings on Cass Street, attached to the town’s police station. The visit was to “acknowledge the staff and the trauma they have been through and their strength in coming back to work”, Mrs Tolley said. “It’s been a very traumatic journey but today is a very significant day because it’s the start of getting back to normal,” she said. “For them to get back into regular routines and starting

Canterbury Police have arrested and charged the female passenger in the fleeing vehicle involved in the crash on Yaldhurst Road on Monday. The vehicle fled police before ramming through an armed police roadblock and colliding head-on with another car, a Honda Jazz, causing injuries to the three elderly occupants. The woman, 27, from Auckland, will appear in Christchurch District Court charged with Possession of Methamphetamine for Supply following a detention under the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Act 1978. “The woman was detained until the internally concealed drugs were passed” acting Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said.

to deal with the public again, as difficult as that might have been... I’ve come away thinking that we’ve got just a great group of staff there. “They are a tremendous, very resilient group of people and most of them were looking forward to getting back to work.” Two security guards will be stationed at the new office, which is by appointment only. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said this week that the reopening was a “positive step”

on the town’s road to recovery. “I can only wish [the staff] all the best.” On the day of the shooting, Mr McKay said locals were resilient enough to cope. “That has happened, and we are getting on with life,” he said. “We’re a small, rural provincial town and one thing we’re extremely good at is looking after each other.” The Ministry of Social Development said that along with Work and Income, Studylink

and Senior Services would operate a full service at the offices from this week. Child, Youth and Family will move in early February. Homeless man Russell John Tully, 48, has entered no pleas to two charges of murder, two of attempted murder, and others of theft, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and setting a man trap. He will reappear in the High Court at Christchurch for a pretrial callover on February 10. - NZME

Stitch in time paints district’s picture By Toni Williams

Members of the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild are painstakingly threading Mid Canterbury’s landscape into a tapestry for inclusion in a national project. The project is being co-ordinated by the Tapestry Trust of New Zealand. Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild member Roylan Austin said more than 225 hours had already gone into the Mid Canterbury tapestry scene sketched by national designer Alex Gilks with input from the Ashburton members. The completed design, on a New Zealand wool backing, exceeded the expectations of the members and included three rivers: Rakaia, Ashburton, Rangitata, a hot air balloon and the vast farming area of the plains. Mrs Austin said the most difficult part of the project for the Ashburton members has been getting the colour combinations right. “It’s daunting but fun,” she said, of the project. By the end of the project all of Ashburton’s members were likely to have contributed to the

Two people are dead and seven others injured after a milk tanker and van collided near Reporoa. The crash, on State Highway 5 south of Settlers Rd, happened about 4.30pm yesterday. A St John Northern Communications spokesman said two people were dead when the ambulances arrived at the scene. Another person suffered critical injuries and was flown to Waikato Hospital by the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter, he said. Two others with moderate injuries and four with minor injuries were transported to Rotorua Hospital by ambulance. A police spokeswoman said the two dead and seven injured were all occupants of the van. - NZME

Track record Riding around - and around, and around, and around, and around - the Mosgiel velodrome for 24 hours will make you look 30 years older. That’s what Andrew Nicholson thought when he looked in the mirror yesterday. He had just shattered the New Zealand outdoor 24-hour cycling record, previously held by Kapiti rider Stuart Downes, by 85.77km.Minus a quick stop to fix a puncture and shoe change, Nicholson (44) circled the velodrome continuously from 7am on Thursday until 7am yesterday, cycling a staggering 776.77km in the process. “It was the hardest event I have ever done, and I’ve done some hard events,” he said. “I got a shock when I looked in the mirror. I’m 44 now but I looked 74 when I finished. I looked in the mirror when I had a wash and I had sunken eyes and I just looked awful.” - NZME

embroidery piece in some way. Mrs Austin said so far guild members had touched on the outer areas of the tapestry before they planned to navigate the harder to reach centre piece…the braided flow of the Ashburton River. This middle area would see two embroiderers working to-

gether – one in front, one behind – to complete the scene. It was expected the tapestry would be completed in time for the guild members’ exhibition on August 1, 2015 at the Ashburton Art Gallery. It was then destined for display in a Dunedin building housing the history of New Zealand.

The man accused of stabbing his ex-partner to death had previously booked a plane ticket home to South Africa and according to his best mate had “nothing left”. Brent Donovan Scott, 49, appeared in North Shore District Court yesterday accused of the murder of Heidi Welman-Scott, 41, and attempted murders of Taryn Leigh Welman, 22, and her boyfriend Matija Miletic, also 22. The alleged incident took place outside Ms Welman-Scott’s home, which she previously shared with the defendant, in the suburb of Albany just before 9am yesterday. An hour earlier, Scott began repeatedly texting his best mate of more than 10 years, saying he had “nothing left”. - NZME

■ HINDS DISTRICT

Committee backs drain plans By michelle nelson

Group is looking for $5400, from Environment Canterbury’s Immediate Steps fund, to put large boulders in the drains, to alter the flow in the fast-flowing, shallow water to create riffles to support invertebrates, and provide protection for fish and fish nurseries. The plan is to create trout habitats in Taylors Drain, which flows into the Hinds River, to encourage new spawning grounds. The juvenile fish would then return to the river. Windermere Drain goes out to the sea, and by improving

Additional funding to restore two drains in the Hinds district as native and sport fish habitats has the tacit approval of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee. Central South Island Fish and Game officer Mark Webb put the request to the committee at its final meeting of the year, this week. The proposal concerns the Taylors and Windermere drains, both just above Surveyors Road. The Hinds Drains Working

ecosystems it is hoped native fish will enter the coastal wetlands. This would also meet the cultural requirements to provide for mahinga kai – the opportunity to gather food from traditional areas. At sites where farmers have laid concrete posts into the drains to allow centre pivot irrigators to walk through the riffle effect necessary to slow down the water to create suitable fish food production had occurred. In one case big boulders, which had originally been set into the bank to help stop erosion, had

rolled into the stream creating the same effect, Mr Webb said. “For native fish we also need riffle features but consultants say for native fish clumps of boulders scattered about to create diversity of habitat.” As the man-made features were initially installed to provide drainage, it was important not to compromise the ability to carry away flood waters. “Before we start we will do an estimate of fish populations in areas of drain we will be working on, and monitoring control work – it will be interesting to

Parishioners celebrate Scottish heritage By Toni Williams

Toni.w@Theguardian.co.nz

The skirl of the bagpipes will flow from St Andrew’s church this weekend as parishioners celebrate the church’s namesake and remember Scottish connections on Scotland’s national day. St Andrew was the patron saint of Scotland. St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church ministry assistant Dellwyn Moylan said St Andrew’s Day - on November 30 - was a day of celebration as many in the congregation had Scottish ancestry. Members of the Ashburton County Scottish Society would also be present. The 10am service would include several Scottish themed hymns. Parish member Peter Ireland would play bagpipes and other parishioners would bring or wear their tartans to church on Sunday. Mr Ireland has played the bagpipes for more than 65

see what is happening in the first flood,” Mr Webb said. DairyNZ has committed to fund the monitoring work, and Fish and Game the fish population monitoring. Mr Webb is keen to get the project under way, next week if possible. “If you can convince them (farmers) it’s a good idea, they say right – ‘let’s get in and do it’,” he said. The zone committee supported the project in principle, and delegated the biodiversity subcommittee to rubber stamp it after ECan has cleared the way.

New trial for Banks Amanda Banks has emerged as an extremely good wife to John Banks with her “obsessive” detective work turning up crucial evidence that led to the former Act Leader’s electoral fraud conviction being overturned yesterday. Mr Banks was celebrating after the Court of Appeal overturned his conviction and ordered a new trial. He was convicted in the High Court earlier this year after failing to disclose donations from Kim Dotcom to his Auckland Mayoralty campaign in 2010. Mr Banks appealed, introducing affidavits from two US-based businessmen who he says were at the same lunch at which Mr Dotcom claimed donations were discussed. The pair - David Schaeffer and Jeffery Karnes - both said donations were not discussed at that lunch.

Lucky lunch years. His Scottish heritage came from his maternal line; his grandparents were Beatons from within the clan McLeod. Miss Moylan said any tartans at the service would be blessed during the Kirking of the Tartan ceremony. After the service a haggis – made by parish member Helen

Coldicott – would be carved during the traditional haggis ceremony and toast to the piper. It would be followed by a high morning tea. “Anyone of Scottish decent or with an interest in Scottish things are most welcome to join us for the service and morning tea,” Miss Moylan said.

He went to the dairy to buy some lunch and walked out $9 million richer. An Auckland man, who wants to remain anonymous, checked his Big Wednesday ticket at the shop on Thursday, only to discover he had won the jackpot in the mid-week prize. The lucky punter said he couldn’t believe his eyes when ‘First Division winner’ flashed up as he scanned the ticket. “I just stood in front of the ticket-checker, blinking,” he said. “Then I scanned my other ticket and it said ‘Second Division winner’. “I thought it must have been a mistake, so handed my tickets to the Lotto assistant and said ‘you’d better check these for me’.” It wasn’t until the retailer stepped out from behind the counter to shake the winner’s hand that the man began to realise just how lucky he was.

Bug closes school An Auckland primary school has been closed by the Ministry of Health. Willowbank School in Howick has published a message on its website saying: “We have been officially closed by the Ministry of Health, parents and caregivers can you please collect your children from school immediately.” The school has had many pupils and staff come down with a vomiting bug. - NZME

Records online for Ashburton mums By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

Ashburton women will soon be able to access all their maternity records online with the rollout of the new national maternity information technology system. The Maternity Clinical Information System (MCIS) has been in development since 2012 and will act as a secure online system to bring together all information collected by various systems throughout hospitals and in communities. Furthermore, it will be developed so the near 60,000 women who have babies each year in New Zealand can access their own information. It is being progressively rolled out across all District Health Boards. The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) will be joining the roll out and the system is intended to be fully enabled by September/October next year. While the dates are provisional, CDHB chief medical officer Dr

Nigel Millar said it will be among the leaders in implementing the system. Dr Millar said there are countless benefits to the system, including improved communication within and between all the clinicians involved in the care of mother and baby, increased patient safety and better quality of care. Risk will also be reduced by “enabling the woman’s maternity journey to be monitored throughout, with up-to-date records including clinical alerts shared between acute and community services”. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman welcomed the rollout earlier this week. Dr Millar said currently the clinical maternity records within the CDHB are on paper, as are a portion of neonatal records. While patients can obtain copies of these records, once the system is implemented all of the information corresponding to a patient will be able to be accessed online.

College artists show portfolios The creative skills of Ashburton College senior students were on display at an art exhibition at the Walnut Avenue pavilion on Thursday night. Over 70 portfolios of student work were showcased at the NCEA Level 1 and 2 Art, Painting, and Photography Exhibition. Ella Hurley, 14, checked out some of the photos on offer at the exhibition. ■ METHVEN COMMUNITY BOARD

Fun way to boost town planning By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Methven Community Board members are planning to hold a family fun day in February to encourage community engagement on the town’s strategic plan. A date for completing the seedling town skate park and developing the Mt Hutt bike park are among possible goals which could be included in a refreshed plan. The board and Ashburton District Council are undertaking a stocktake of the 10-year plan, which was developed in 2009 as an update to previous documents. Council policy advisor Fleur Mulligan said community consultation was required “to continue to develop Methven as a great place to live and visit”. The stocktake would highlight what had been achieved to date and what could be prioritised for future. The board has so far discussed targets such as adding a date to have the skate park completed,

potential for a youth hangout space, developing the Mt Hutt bike park, developing an emergency plan for the town by 2016, reducing family violence, and setting up an annual Methven youth award. Board members decided at their last meeting that a family fun day could see more people come along and be involved, rather than if a public meeting was held. Chairwoman Liz McMillan said yesterday much in the current plan had already been achieved, including Methven Railway Reserve improvements and installing a second Methven Primary School accessway. Ms McMillan said the family fun day would have information available on the plan, alongside other activities. A date had yet to be organised. “There will be an opportunity for people to voice their opinions and say what they think needs improving in town and add to the plan as well.”

Teachers celebrate first milestone After years of hard work, six Mid Canterbury teachers celebrated the completion of their teachers’ registration at a special function on Thursday night. About 90 members of the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) attended the organisation’s annual Graduand and Retirees Dinner at the

Hotel Ashburton. The event celebrates teachers who have met professional standards in their first two years of training to become fully registered teachers. Teachers (above, from left) Hollie O’Rourke (Longbeach School), Stacey Park (Hampstead School), Malorie Dobbin (Hampstead School), Wendy

Hopwood (Tinwald School), Kim Ristrom (Hampstead School) and Justus Frank (Ashburton Christian School), celebrated their achievement at the event. Toni Bishop (Netherby School) and Emma Kelly (Rakaia School) also graduated, but were unable to attend the event.

ough life for black-billed gulls

E

ach September the skies around Ashburton fill with the cries of the world’s most endangered gull. Black-billed gulls begin to familiarise themselves with their nesting location on the Ashburton River and will fly around the town and river. Coming in from surrounding pastures and coastal areas where they feed over winter, the birds have an unsettled patch before they choose a nesting location. Last year they spent several days on the roof tops of West Street buildings near the public library, much to the dismay of pedestrians as they dodged their associated white splotches on footpaths. Once the birds settle they are determined to stay to raise their young, and will remain at their nesting site come hell or high water. The latter can be a real risk, as the Ashburton River changes with floods and freshes. The main threat to the birds however is disruption from humans. As much as the birds may look like a bunch of common seagulls

milling on the river and causing a nuisance, they are unlike New Zealand’s other two common gull species. Black-billed gulls are not only native, but also endemic in that they are found only in New Zealand. They are more slender and elegant that the red-billed gull, with a longer bill. The bill and legs are black. The species is in serious decline and has the same endangered status as the takahe and kakapo. This year, after settling briefly at the Ashburton River mouth before a fresh came through, a large colony inhabited the river just downstream of the State Highway 1 bridge. It numbers about 6000 birds and is believed to be the largest in New Zealand. The birds typically nest in the vicinity of the bridge each year. Human interference can range from someone walking an unleashed dog, to four-wheeldrivers or trail bikers disobeying signs and barriers in the area. Disrupting a colony is against the law and two years ago an Ashburton man was imprisoned

after he drove into the river colony. As well as human interference, eggs and young birds are at risk from introduced mammals, harriers and black-backed gulls. ECan undertakes a trapping programme on the river each year to protect the gulls and other native river birds and over 10

stones, or even in the water, they are less afraid if you come from the water,” Mr Attwood said. He said the birds were “fiercely devoted parents”. The male and female take turns sitting on eggs and feeding chicks. The birds nested in colonies for protection. “Many pairs of eyes” helped keep on top of predators, and

Not only were black-billed gulls rare globally, but so was the bird’s river habitat

weeks this spring caught 12 feral cats, 22 stoats, six ferrets and 115 hedgehogs. Christchurch-based nature photographer and conservation blogger Steve Attwood has photographed the birds on the Ashley and Waimakariri rivers. He said the birds were “hyperalert”, so getting close enough to get their picture was a challenge. “I have a camouflage net thrown over me, lying over

the birds would fight off attacks. The colonies were far from harmonious places, and nesting pairs were in a constant state of tension with their neighbours. “The basic rule in most colonies is you don’t nest within beak reach of your neighbour,” Mr Attwood said. The birds would stay on their nests on the hottest days, panting to stay cool, in order to protect their chicks from predation

and overheating. He once heard a colony of 400 birds panting in unison from 100 metres away. “They weren’t even going to go and get a drink of water, even though the water was just 20 feet away.” Mr Attwood did not know why the colonies sometimes chose busy areas such as near bridges. It could be that shingle banks were relatively stable there and at a height which gave protection from floods. “There’s obviously something about that site that appeals to them,” he said of the Ashburton River colony near State Highway 1. He said not only were blackbilled gulls rare globally, but so was the bird’s river habitat. The gulls had evolved to nest in the braided rivers of Otago, Canterbury and the North Island, and they could not go anywhere else. The Ashburton River colony has built its nests, and chicks are expected to begin hatching this coming week. In January the chicks will complete fledging and the colony will leave the river.

From bottom left to right – Black-billed gulls can nest only on braided rivers. Gulls pant on hot days to stay cool. Young gulls are dependent on their parents for food and protection. Two young gulls go for a swim on a hot day.

Festival promises peace vibe Ashburton will play host to an R16 charity music festival this weekend aiming to raise money for disabled youth. The Peace Fund and Harmony event will be held at a Gartartan Road property. It starts at 3pm today and runs until midday tomorrow. The festival will host a mixture of South Island bands and DJs, appealing to a variety of musical tastes. Christchurch resident Lucas Panton said the festival was to bring youth and community together. “I wanted to throw this event in Ashburton because I believe that it is a good way to get the youth and community together and on a positive peaceful vibe. “This is my way of spreading the love and hopefully influencing some people to do what they can to help the community.” The festival had drawn widespread support and organisers anticipated a good turnout.

■ UNITED STATES

By Jennie Matthew

Protesters kneel down with their hands up in front of Los Angeles police officers in downtown Los Angeles. AP PHOTO

A Missouri grand jury decided not to prosecute Officer Darren Wilson, who fired the fatal shots - a move that inspired coast-to-coast anger in the United States as well as a rally across the Atlantic in London. The simmering fury led a small group of protesters to attempt to storm St Louis city hall. After they were rebuffed, extra police and a National Guard Humvee were called in to protect the building. In Ferguson late on Wednesday, the group of mostly young people - bundled up against the

cold - shouted, “This is what democracy looks like.” One or two taunted and swore at the 50 National Guard members in riot gear who stood on duty at the police department. Witnesses said police took one person into custody. During the day volunteer clean-up crews swept the streets of Ferguson, where angry crowds had torched businesses and looted stores. Heavy security - police, state troopers and National Guard troops - was still visible in the streets Wednesday, but the situation was stabilising. Already,

Tuesday night did not see the scale of destruction that followed Monday’s decision. In Britain thousands of sympathisers angered by Brown’s treatment marched in London chanting the same slogan: “Hands up, don’t shoot.” “We need to send a message to Mike Brown’s family,” said Carol Duggan, the aunt of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man whose shooting by British police in 2011 sparked riots in London. US civil rights leaders have called for more protests today. Similar rallies were held last year after the acquittal on murder charges of neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who shot dead another unarmed black teen, Trayvon Martin, in Florida. Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, told CBS News that they hoped protests would remain peaceful. “We continue to ask for calm,” McSpadden said. Brown’s parents however had harsher words for Wilson, who had said he had a “clean conscience” about the shooting. The jury found that Wilson had shot Brown in self-defence after an altercation with him. A total of 12 shots were fired. In his first televised comments since the incident, Wilson told ABC News he had feared for his life during the confrontation. - AFP

Bad weather delays asteroid probe By Miwa Suzuki Bad weather will delay the launch of a Japanese space probe on a six-year mission to mine a distant asteroid. Hayabusa2 had been set to blast off aboard Japan’s main H-IIA rocket from Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan tomorrow. But thick cloud expected over the weekend means scientists need to postpone the launch, a statement by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said. “The new launch day will be announced as soon as it is determined,” it added. The 31 billion yen project is sending a probe towards the unpoetically-named 1999 JU3

In brief

New shooting video Video of US police officers shooting dead a 12-year-old black boy holding a replica gun seconds after confronting him has further stoked anger in the country. Surveillance video released on Thursday showed that the boy, Tamir Rice, was shot last weekend just seconds after two officers arrived in a patrol car at a Cleveland, Ohio park. Audio broadcast on US TV shows that a man who first saw the boy waving and pointing the gun and called police, specified at least twice he thought it was probably “a fake”. But the dispatcher speaking to officers rushing to the scene fails to mention that the witness thought the gun was not real. The video emerged as tensions eased in Ferguson, after two days of often violent unrest sparked by Monday’s decision by a grand jury not to charge a white policeman who shot dead an unarmed black teenager. Just a few dozen protesters and clergy braved rain and light snow to protest outside the police department in the St Louis suburb, where 18-yearold Michael Brown was killed on August 9. The shooting sparked weeks of protest and a debate about race relations and militarystyle police tactics.

asteroid in deep space. It will blast a crater in the asteroid to collect virgin materials unexposed to millennia of solar wind and radiation, in the hope of answering some fundamental questions about life and the universe. “The asteroid is carbonaceous and we may find organic matter and water, the stuff of life,” Hitoshi Kuninaka, project leader at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), said in an interview posted on the agency’s website. Analysing the extra-terrestrial materials could help shed light on the birth of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago and offer clues about what gave rise to life on Earth, he said. Hayabusa2, about the size

of a refrigerator, is expected to reach the asteroid in mid2018 and will spend around 18 months studying the surface. It will also drop tiny MINERVA-II rover robots as well as a French-German landing package named Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) for surface observation. In a galactic first, Hayabusa2 will drop an “impactor” that will explode above the asteroid’s surface and fire a metal bullet into the crust at a speed of 7,200km/h - six times the speed of sound on Earth. The bullet is expected to create a small crater that will enable the probe to collect material from the asteroid. The Hayabusa2 mission will blast off just weeks after the

European Space Agency succeeded in making mankind’s first-ever landing on a comet this month. Scientists said initial data sent from the robot lab Philae showed traces of organic molecules and a surface much harder than imagined. Philae, released from its mothership Rosetta, has gone into hibernation on comet 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko, having used its onboard battery power after 60 hours of prodding and probing. Engineers hope that the lander’s solar panels will charge its batteries in the coming months as the comet, with Philae hopefully still clinging to its surface, moves closer to the Sun. - AFP

Nicholas Polias took Tobin Ryall, Andy Hun Wei Lee, Sandy Jan and Rhys Gould to court after comments were made on the social networking site implying he was a thief. In awarding Mr Polias damages in the NSW Supreme Court yesterday, Justice Stephen Rothman said although the post reached only a small number of readers, its significance was great. - AAP

Hangover cure Scientists have developed the ultimate hangover cure - a drug that reduces the harmful effects of binge-drinking on the brain. The same drug may open the door to new treatments for Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases, researchers believe. Tested on rats experiencing the equivalent of a human binge-drinking bender, it curbed brain cell loss and inflammation and improved their memory. Storms hit Brisbane There was a chance thunderstorms could hit Brisbane, but residents certainly didn’t expect the ferocious, violent supercell that pummelled the city. As the massive clean-up gets under way, frightening tales have emerged of people being pelted by hailstones, trees falling on cars and roofs being torn from buildings. James Marriott says his flatmate is shell-shocked after the storm tore apart their riverside apartment in Toowong. Mr Marriott wasn’t home when the tempest struck, but his flatmate was in the kitchen of their top-floor unit when all hell broke loose. “The poor guy - a bomb’s gone off in his house, the apocalypse is happening and he’s running for his life and it’s an absolute miracle that he is OK,” Mr Marriott said. - AAP

Tongans dump MPs Tongans voting in the general election have dumped half of their MPs as the tiny kingdom faces up to a grim economic outlook. Official results released by the Tongan Electoral Commission yesterday show 12 of 17 people’s representatives and one of nine nobles - members of the extended royal family - have been voted out of office in the 26-seat parliament. New Zealand-based Tongan political scientist Malakai Koloamatangi had said ahead of the poll that Tonga “continues to suffer” from an ailing economy and that this would have an impact on the vote. - AFP

atepayers’ enthusiasm for exhaustive community consultation will be tested by their councillors’ pledge to grant $500,000 to Community House Mid Canterbury. Ashburton District councillors want the council to make the grant to help Community House buy the $1.1 million, tragedy-tarnished former Winz building on Cass Street. The council is pressed for time. Community House has a January settlement date for the building and it needs a foundation donor to encourage other funders to help meet the shortfall. There is little doubt the grant will go to a worthy cause and will help restore as a community asset a place abandoned after the horror of the September shootings. But ratepayers might wonder whether the bid shows council needs a way to gauge support for big-ticket spending when timeframes make traditional consultation hard to do. The grant will replace the $30,000 annual grant the council usually gives Community House but, as a lump sum, it is of a size that would usually go to out to consultation. This time around, councillors were advised a decision was needed soon, but that there had been no visible negative public reaction to the news stories about the project. This is probably the case but the paucity of negative letters to the editor is not the most rigorous test as to whether ratepayers are happy to forgo their chance to have their say. Consultation might have shown people think Community House is the best response to revitalising what has become a forlorn memorial. It might have shown ratepayers are happy to contribute $500,000 from council reserves, to forgo $25,000 in interest and recoup more than $100,000 in tax benefits for the trouble. It might also have shown ratepayers are happy to pay more than a decade’s worth of grants in one hit, confident Community House will not need to ask for more later on. But without some form of rapid-fire consultation, councillors will have to make a decision based on previous experience, gut feeling and a sense of moral obligation.

To the large number of volunteers who gave of their time so willingly to drive and collect food on behalf of the two community food banks we thank you. These included members of other Lions Clubs, Ashburton and Hinds Volunteer Fire Brigades, and a number of other service clubs, girl guides, brownies, cadets, banks and local businesses. Shopping On the Guardian’s Facebook page, people were talking about shopping and some businesses leaving the Ashburton Arcade: The face of ‘shopping’ is changing – if we can’t rock into a shop and buy it there and then, we get it online. Afraid to say ‘the big red shed’ has a lot to do with the way people shop – kills it for the boutique shops. Living in Christchurch, Ashburton needs to embrace the Arcade – look at ‘The Tannery’ in Woolston, it is a hive of activity every day.

by David Fletcher

Yes I know per capita way more people in Christchurch to shop, but Ashburton people need to shop locally and at the smaller boutique shops. Save the Arcade guys, way too much history in there to let it go. Lisa Ward Haven’t been in the arcade for a long long time... In fact haven’t shopped in Ashburton in years, the choice is just not there. Christchurch has it all. Jane Slaven Depends what you want I suppose, but usually manage to get what I want and I think it’s important to support local. Maree Lawlor I shop at Chicago Joes and (buy) sushi. But shouldn’t the arcade be a protected building? David Favel

A place for peace and science Left – The most penguinfriendly continent on earth.

Hanne Nielsen

TOWNIE GOES COUNTRY

D

ecember 1 is Antarctica Day, a day to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, eat ice cream, and generally turn our attention south. This year I am taking that sentiment further than most, heading back to the frozen continent on board a cruise ship to lecture on the very treaty that Antarctica Day marks. Being someone who can’t stand the cold, it seems unnatural that I would opt to spend my summer in a place famed for its chilly climate. Antarctica is worth making exceptions for. Antarctica is the coldest, highest, driest, windiest, most penguin-friendly continent on earth. It is also particularly interesting from a political angle. The continent itself is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, a complex maze of annexes and adopted conventions that govern everything from the catch limits for fish in the Southern Ocean through to the environmental monitoring that must be undertaken before establishing a research station.

Meetings are held once a year and all decisions are made by consensus. Twelve nations – including New Zealand – were the original signatories back in 1959, but these days there are over 50 nations signed up

to the Antarctic Treaty. That treaty has many purposes, but most importantly, it designates Antarctica as a place for peace and science. Military activity is not allowed and science is the focus on the continent.

What does all this mean for us in Canterbury? Well, the big grey C-17 plane that spends the summer commuting between the Ross Ice Shelf and Christchurch International Airport whilst full of scientists in orange and red parkas is one local link. Antarctica Day is also a good chance to take a moment to remember just where those bitterly cold southerly winds that can assail our shores have their origins. Our ship visits the other side of Antarctica: the peninsula region is located directly south of the tip of South America. Still, the same weather rules apply: take Auckland’s five seasons in one day, push them into a giant freezer and you’ll get the idea. It’s in the midst of that weather that I will be celebrating both Antarctica Day and Thanksgiving; with a number of US nationals on board, the American holiday can’t be missed. In the spirit of both, I’m thankful to be back showing visitors around this amazing frozen continent and I’m doubly thankful to have such a supportive family back home who encourage me to go literally to the ends of the world and back.

For everything there is a season L

ooking out the window of my study I see windruffled trees against the backdrop of a clear blue sky. Higher up, the odd pigeon dances and tumbles in the strong breeze. In the foreground I spy some blackcurrant bushes and beside them the green fruit hanging from the branches of the greengage. There is a story to that greengage. I planted it about seven years ago. The first spring seemed so full of promise. The little tree was absolutely laden with blossom on every branch and I eagerly awaited tasting some plums in the very first season. Alas, a late severe frost put

David Bayne

paid to all my hopes. Not only was all the blossom destroyed, the frost even damaged the tips of the branches as well. The next year saw very little blossom and no fruit. The year after that was the same, and the one after that, and the one after that too. I began to despair and wondered if I should chop the tree out and start again with another. Last year I even planted another greengage. The Coes golden crop I had planted

alongside as a pollinator had grown well and fruited well too. This season it looks as though I will have a good harvest from that greengage tree. In Psalm 1, we read about a tree that yields its fruit in its season. Ecclesiastes chapter 3 begins with the words “for everything there is a season”. We live in an age that doesn’t have much time for seasons. Such is life in an instant society. We want what we want when we want it. Most little children do. As parents we try to educate our children not to take that approach to life, and yet by our example often send a different message (Interestingly, recent research indicates that

delayed gratification in children is a better predictor of success in later life than any other factor). Time is a necessary ingredient in growing to maturity. The Bible is full of illustrations and teaching about sowing now and reaping later. Getting a good harvest is about establishing the right plant, providing the right nourishment, and then waiting until the season is right for the harvest. The word of God is nourishing food and the harvest will be the fruit of the Spirit. Bon appetit. the Rev. David Bayne of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church

While they may have moved their business to modern premises at the Ashburton Business Estate, Alastair and John McIntosh say they haven’t grown too big to look after the small jobs. Far from it. Small refurbishments and renovations were the bread and butter for the business in its earlier days, with every job adding value to the McIntosh Builders Ltd brand. Alastair himself used to work at the freezing works, and would complete renovations in his spare time. “It’s who we were then, and it’s who we are today. “We don’t lock ourselves into a particular niche or price bracket, we are just as happy to complete a refurbishment of a cottage as we are with designing and building an architectural design at the lake. “We are lucky to have a wealth of experience in our team. From appren-

tices who are embracing technology and advances in the building industry, to experienced craftsmen who specialise in the refurbishment of older homes, we have the right builder for the job. “We wouldn’t be where we are today

if it weren’t for the skill and dedication

of our staff, some of whom have worked with us for 30 or so years.” Alastair said. Through more than 80 years

of local experience, the McIntosh name is synonymous with expert

workmanship. From the design and

conception phase, to construction and

finishes, the building firm can look after as much, or as little of the construction cycle as is requested.

Commercial

Construction isn’t a contract, it’s a relationship where trust and integrity are upheld. McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd provide a range of commercial construction options, from precast panel solutions, to conventional timber trusses or steel framing. It constantly diversifies its areas of expertise to meet the changing needs of its clients. John McIntosh was the driving force behind McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd. He worked for his father, Alastair, and served his time as an

apprentice 14 years ago. His passion evolved toward the commercial side of the business, with a fascination with In situ construction and precast concrete. He constructed his own home out of precast concrete when he was 25. John saw a gap in the market for another commercial construction company to be formed, and was dedicated to stamping the McIntosh name throughout the district’s commercial builds. In 2011, with the support of his wife, John started to test the waters for McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd, and has never looked back. Whether it’s a farm building, of-

Construction of Smallbones Dealersh fice block, warehouse or workshop, McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd provide a comprehensive depth of industry experience to deliver innovative solutions. Using precast concrete panels from their own division, McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd can control the reliability of its product as well as the timing and delivery of its panels and beams to site. With a lot of precast concrete resources heavily involved with the Christchurch rebuild, it is this guarantee of a timely completion which makes McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd an attractive option in the market.

hip Its commercial team have been involved with many earthquake repair projects both within Ashburton and throughout the district, as well as in Christchurch itself. Effective project management is one of the foundations underlying every successful commercial build. This is why McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd aim to use the best project management strategy possible including an elemental timeline so you can see how long your project will take. McIntosh Commercial Construction Ltd want to see your business stand the test of time, just as theirs has.

Since land was purchased at the Ashburton Business Estate in September 2012, McIntosh Precast Ltd embarked on the ambitious journey of establishing themselves in the market of precast concrete. Led by John McIntosh, the project kicked off with little more than four or five shipping containers and an earnest attitude. The precast division now has five precast bases, employs approximately 20 people and is rapidly developing a name within the precast and construction communities for tackling the jobs which others have walked away from. As well as the development of the precast yard, every division of the McIntosh Group is located in the Business Estate, under one roof. This has streamlined the business and allowed the three divisions to work closely with each other. Clients can expect the same personalised service as when they used to visit John or Alastair at their home, previous to the construction of their new office. With a range of large projects successfully completed, McIntosh Precast Ltd are developing a name within the complex architectural precast market, for both residential and commercial

elements. Its work in conjunction with Naylor Love at the EA Networks Centre is an example of how precast concrete can be used to achieve a challenging architectural aesthetic. McIntosh Precast Ltd also undertook a challenging task for the rebuild of the Knox Church in Christchurch, for Higgs Construction, which combines heritage restoration with earthquake resistant design. The precast element was ambitious, and many companies had declined the contract. John and his team undertook the difficult request, and through many weeks and months of labour-intensive testing, it completed the post-tensioned beams, believed to be a world-first. The design has been nominated for a national award, and research is currently being conducted to confirm that the successful placement of the post-tensioned precast beams is a world-first. Not just for commercial use, precast panels and design elements are becoming increasingly popular in the residential building market. John McIntosh built his home using precast concrete, and commented that if he had to build for himself again, he would use precast concrete every time. The biggest advantage to precast panels is time. Where it may take two

Knox Church rebuild – supply of Precast panels and beams months for a conventional build to complete the foundation and walls of a build, it can take only two weeks constructing the same building using precast methods. Not only is it fast, it’s also versatile. Precast panels can be poured to achieve a range of design effects. Think of the decorative driveways you may have seen, using a range of colours and visible stones. This same look can be achieved on the exterior and interior of your home using precast panels. Exposed aggregate, colour, acid washed, honed and sand-blasted are just some of the achievable design palettes. In a

recent example, McIntosh Precast Ltd transported specially coloured stones to achieve a desired look for a client’s precast elements. “It’s extremely satisfying to complete highly technical projects, pushing the boundaries of what architectural components can be achieved with precast, whether it be in a community space or a high-end residential home,” John said. If a client has a particular look they are trying to achieve, McIntosh Precast Ltd allows it to provide architectural solutions for challenging designs.

■ BOWLS

Hong Kong podium for Keith By Jonathan Leask

Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Allenton bowler, Sandra Keith, collected bronze with New Zealand pairs partner Angela Boyd at the Hong Kong International Classic recently. The New Zealand pair were knocked out of contention by Australia’s Kelsey Cottrell and Carla Odgers in the semi-finals, having to settle for third equal. “We were a bit unlucky we didn’t go further as we got beaten in a tie breaker 3-2 in the semifinal,” Keith said. In group play they only won four of their 11 matches with three draws, but was enough to qualify third from their group. In a crossover quarter-final they beat Malaysia before falling to the Australians - but their Tasman rivals then went down to

the Philippines in the final. It was another Black Jacks appearance for Keith – who missed out on attending the Commonwealth Games earlier this yearbut is aiming to get back in the mix for a few more international matches this summer. Keith is still a member of the squad, but that gets re-named following the New Zealand Bowls Nationals in Auckland in January. While she was in Hong Kong she missed out on playing in the New Zealand Open, also in Auckland, but isn’t too bothered with her bigger goal coming at the end of the year. “You can’t get to everything and it’s not as important as the nationals and I missed the start being in Hong Kong.” Right: Ashburton’s Sandra Keith has eyes firmly on future glory.

■ CRICKET

Hughes’ death stuns Black Caps By andrew aLderson The Black Caps are “struggling” since hearing the news of the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes’ death. Hughes, 25, was struck by a bouncer during a domestic firstclass match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday. While he underwent emergency surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to reduce pressure on his brain, the lefthander remained in an induced coma in the intensive care unit. Australian team doctor Peter Brukner announced Thursday afternoon Hughes had died, surrounded by family and close friends. Play on the second day of the third cricket test between New Zealand and Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates was abandoned. Heath Mills, chief executive of New Zealand Cricket Players Association said the players were “hurting”. “They’re struggling ... our players have played against [Hughes] or in teams with him... for about seven or eight years,” he told 3News yesterday. “He’s a well-known colleague of a number of our players and they’re hurting.” He said the players were thinking “It could have been anyone of us”. Safety standards would be discussed by the association in coming weeks, Mr Mills said.

Phillip Hughes

“Our whole entire focus has been on getting through what’s happened this week. we haven’t really turned our minds yet to safety standards ... that needs to come in time but we need to focus on our people.” Counselling has been provided to the players. Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke, a close friend of Hughes, was at St Vincent’s when he died. Clarke read a brief statement on behalf of Hughes’ parents, brother and sister following his death. “We’re devastated by the loss

of our much-loved son and brother Phillip. Cricket was Phillip’s life, and we as a family shared that love of the game with him ... We love you,” Clarke said while holding back tears. Many other former and current Australian players visited Hughes during his final two days. Hughes, who would have been 26 on Sunday, was at the crease for South Australia when he attempted to hook a short-pitched ball from New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott. Although he was wearing a helmet, the ball struck an unprotected area at the back of his head. He stumbled, leaned over and then collapsed after the hit. International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson said his death had been devastating for the cricketing community. “He was a naturally gifted player who entertained many with his attacking approach to the game. “All those who play, have played or are in any way connected to the game are devastated by the news,” he said. In Sharjah, Hughes’ photo adorned the scoreboard and there was a sense of disbelief that a test cricketer could die in such a fashion. No players emerged from the dressing rooms during an initial delay of an hour while officials discussed the appropriate response.

Soon afterwards the rawness of the news meant treating the day as a rest day was the only appropriate course of action. Black Caps coach Mike Hesson said the team was devastated. “It’s an unthinkable loss and I can tell you it’s an incredibly sombre dressing room.” New Zealand players expressed their condolences on Twitter. Ross Taylor wrote: “RIP Phil Hughes. Gone too soon. Thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. Shocked”. Jimmy Neesham wrote: “I’ve never before felt so keenly the loss of someone I’d never met. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Phil Hughes.” New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said: “Cricket is a family. Quite apart from its super-competitive edge, it is a game of kinship, mateship and friendship; of camaraderie and community.” Hughes is the second player in two years to sustain a fatal blow. Darryn Randall, 32, was killed after being struck on the side of the head during a Border Cricket Board Premier League match in the Eastern Cape last year. In 1998, former India test player Raman Lamba died after being hit on the head while fielding during a domestic match in Bangladesh. Abdul Aziz died after he was hit over the heart in a 1959 Pakistan first-class match. - NZME

Pleased with the win in the practice game yes; less so with some of the play the Black Sticks produced. “We didn’t play very well so it was a positive to come away with a win,” midfield dynamo Punt said yesterday. “We have to learn when we’re playing badly how to win these games.” Getting the basics of passing and trapping right is key as a platform for success and Punt felt her players were off colour in those departments yesterday. “That was disappointing, but coming into a tournament you never know. I’ve gone into some tournaments not playing very well but been fine during the tournament.” New Zealand, ranked No 4, start against world No 10 Japan, before tackling the world No 1

Netherlands and No 5-ranked Chinese. “Every game is going to be a challenge. These are top eight teams so there’s no bunnies.

“The Dutch are No 1 and playing that way at the moment, but you don’t go into any game to lose.” The two injury worries, attack-

er Sophie Cocks and defender Liz Thompson, played full games against the Germans. Cocks had some knee pain but should be ready for the Japanese, as with Aucklander Thompson who split her knee earlier in the week and has put up with some stiffness. Meanwhile, head coach Colin Batch has recalled world class midfielder Ryan Archibald and gifted striker Nick Wilson for the four-test home series against Canada, starting in Nelson on December 9. Archibald, 34, took a break from the international game after the London Olympics. His 274 caps are the third-most by a New Zealander. Wilson has been battling knee problems since late 2012 but his abilities have never been in doubt. “Nick has worked very hard to recover from a serious knee injury and it’s great to have him back,” Batch said. Canterbury defender Nick Haig is out after breaking a finger against Japan this month, while Simon Child retains the captaincy from that series. - NZH

Second-season syndrome for Neesham, Anderson By anDrew aLDerson A fascinating chapter of the cricketing summer involves how Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson cope with the symptoms of ‘second season syndrome’ that can affect top sportspeople after impressive starts to their careers. Both are unquestionable talents who, presumably, will be around for the next decade fighting out the all-rounder spot in New Zealand sides. Yet, they have recently struggled for form. In Neesham’s case it’s since his twin half-century contributions on the West Indies tour, which helped win the third test at Bridgetown, followed by a tidy Caribbean Premier League with Guyana. For Anderson it’s since the Indian Premier League where facing the hype would have been as gruelling as braving any pace attack. Neesham’s had the added difficulty of dealing with the experiment as an ODI opener as New Zealand look to incorporate him in a starting XI. He then only managed 39 runs across four test innings against Pakistan. His bowling has seen

Jimmy Neesham: Highest test score by a No. 8 on debut.

him take two wickets across his last two tests, two ODIs and two T20Is. Anderson still looks more suited as a test No.6 than No.5. He’s filling a gap in the team balance with McCullum opening. The current match, on a flat Sharjah wicket, presents a chance to justify his spot after a series top score of 48. His left-armers have provided a variation at Brendon Mc-

Cullum’s disposal but haven’t troubled the Pakistani batsmen to a great degree. He has demonstrated venom on occasion, like when he fractured opener Ahmed Shehzad’s skull in Abu Dhabi. The pair were schoolboy prodigies. Anderson first appeared for Canterbury in 2007 aged 16 years and 89 days, the youngest first-class debutant in 59 seasons.

Neesham won the schoolboy speedball radar competition in 2008 with a full delivery of 132km/h (cunningly he’d worked out if he pitched up it would go quicker through the air than if it hit the pitch). The pair’s stocks rocketed on the international scene last summer. Anderson played the innings of a lifetime in Queenstown, inflicting grievous bowling harm on the West Indies attack, making a century off a world record 36 balls. His New Year’s Day performance lit up media worldwide in a traditionally quiet period. Significantly, he became one of the three most popular searches on the cricketing website Cricinfo, whose biggest market is Indian fans. The kudos earned him an $866,000 IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians. The payment structure meant he didn’t earn all that, but it doubtless provided a handy nest egg. Neesham was handed a test cap after the Doug Bracewell/ Jesse Ryder shenanigans prior to the first test against India in Auckland. He set the highest score by a No.8 batsman on debut with

137. That effort, after waiting to bat almost nine hours and 123 overs, was backed up with a century in the West Indies to make him one of eight cricketers, and the first New Zealander, to score centuries in his first two tests. Neesham had already impressed Indian Premier League eyes with his Champions League performances for Otago. He secured a $195,000 IPL contract with the Delhi Daredevils. Now the pressures of secondseason-syndrome apply. The term is used in reference to their break-through season; both had made sporadic New Zealand limited overs appearance prior to 2013-14. With the benefits of exposure on the international stage come the difficulties of having your technique unpicked frame-byframe by opposition video analysts. Media and fans follow suit, asking questions about whether such blazing trails will run out of fuel. The pressure will now intensify with a World Cup about to start on New Zealand’s doorstep. Chalmers grabs lead in Open By Darren WaLton Globetrotting Greg Chalmers stands in the way of another dream final-round Australian Open duel between Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott. Chalmers, a two-time former champion contesting his sixth tournament in six weeks, seized the outright halfway lead with a sizzling second-round five-under-par 66 yesterday. McIlroy is one stroke behind on a jam-packed leaderboard after carding a rollercoaster 69, the world No.1 mixing an eagle with six birdies and six bogeys. Adam Crawford (69), Conrad Shindler (68) and inform amateur Todd Sinnott (67) share second with the defending champion, while American drawcard Jordan Spieth (72), newly-turned professional Geoff Drake (70) and Brett Rumford (69) are two back at three under. Scott rebounded from his first-day shocker to match Chalmers’ 67 in a flawless display highlighted by an eagle three at the par-5 14th that ignited his fightback. After being five over for the tournament after his opening nine holes, Scott is now two under and poised for another serious challenge in his quest to atone for last year’s final-hole slip-up that allowed McIlroy to snatch the trophy at Royal Sydney. “We had a good morning for it so I had to take advantage just for the sake of getting myself back into the tournament,” Scott said. “Yesterday, I got off to a bad start and, in the wind, it was tricky and I didn’t scramble when I had to early in the round and it was slipping away from me. “Today, it didn’t start much better - I was scrambling - but I scrambled well and then, all of sudden, I made eagle at 14 and momentum is on your side.” All up, 16 players are within five shots of the lead, including another two-time champion in Robert Allenby at two under with Scott after a 69. Jamie Lovemark went one better than Scott and Chalmers to snatch the course record at the revamped layout with a 65 that left the littleknown American well in the hunt. - AAP

Only way is up for young team By Jonathan Leask

Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury’s young guns will lead the Aorangi charge in next week’s New Zealand men’s Interprovincial Championship at the Hamilton Golf Club. Ashburton’s Cameron Grant and Jordan Green will play at one and two respectively with Tinwald’s Josh Smith at three, all return after playing for Aorangi last year where the side finished without a win. Tinwald’s Jeff Hewitt makes his senior debut at number five with the starting line-up completed with Gleniti’s Travis Cook who played well for the Aorangi Masters team at the Freyberg Masters Nationals earlier this month. Temuka’s Jake McLachlan will travel as the reserve. Manawatu-Wanganui ended a 49year drought when they won the tournament last year at the North Shore Golf Club.

Bay of Plenty were the beaten finalists in 2013 while Tasman boasts two New Zealand representatives and will be hunting their first title since 1996. Canterbury, who last won the event in 2000, are an unknown quantity as they have six new players from last year while Wellington, the most successful team in the tournament’s history with 13 titles, also has an experienced side as they try to win the title for the first time since 2010. There are no easy matches in the team’s matchplay contest with any of the 15 provinces able to put themselves in contention over the seven rounds. Aorangi meets Southland and Bay of Plenty on day one, Waikato and Otago await on Wednesday before they meet big brothers Canterbury on Thursday. Aorangi then meet Taranaki before a bye in the final round on Friday.

There are two divisions, based on the previous year’s results, and the final day of the event sees semi-finals and a final to decide the champion. The New Zealand Women’s Interprovincial will follow the men’s tournament from December 9-13 at the Lochiel Golf Club where Aorangi women’s team also has a distinct Mid Canterbury presence. Tinwald’s Catherine Knight will play as number one with Ashburton’s Nicole Nathan at two, Sharon Bradford at three and Nicole Hamilton-Cross, with Pauline Bell as the reserve. Geraldine’s Ginny Bolderston will play at four. Bell’s daughter, Catherine will line up for Canterbury - who took out the South Island Interprovincial earlier this month. Aorangi came third beating Otago, for the Latimer Trophy, and Tasman but missed out beating Southland by half a point.

Alan Browne is a local sporting legend. Alan died earlier this month but his exploits on the grass, with his golf clubs or a tennis racket in hand, will leave a lasting legacy on Mid Canterbury’s sporting landscape. While he plied his trade in the family shoe business at the shop on East Street, the naturally gifted sportsman excelled at whatever he did. Although he received no formal professional coaching, he is considered Mid Canterbury’s most successful golfer as well as holding records on the tennis court as well. Alan was member of the United Tennis Club on Oak Grove, which had 17 grass courts where the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre now stands. At 18 he won his first Mid Canterbury Gala Cup men’s singles title in 1958. He then won six consecutive titles from 1960-1965, along with some doubles titles as well. His record of seven titles still stands and was only equalled by Rhys Cromie in 2012. It was on the golf course where he really shone. Spieth ‘spewing’

guardianonline.co.nz

Masters runner-up Jordan Spieth was left steaming after a clumsy marshall trod on his ball and potentially cost him the outright lead during the second round of the Australian Open. Spieth recovered from the incident on the par-3 fourth hole, his 13th of the day, to finish with back-to-back birdies at three-under-par for the championship. But the American was still seething and bewildered - after signing for a one-over 72 after he’d teed off one stroke clear of the field. The marshall’s mishap occurred after Spieth’s tee shot rolled just over the back of the green and into light rough. The marshall didn’t own up and it was left to spectators to alert Spieth to what had happened. “I went from a chance at making a two there to making a four,” he said. - AAP

New Zealand Golf needs to find a way to entice Lydia Ko to line up at Clearwater at the national women’s open in February. The organisation rarely pay appearance fees but a compromise needs to be created to have the most exciting player in the women’s game play in New Zealand. There are few Kiwi superstars who regularly compete in their backyard in any sport but Ko has shown tremendous support for the event in recent years. - NZH

Hard work, discipline key for Ko in the region and an accurate putter, gave him the ability to always recover. The legend of the Brandon course recorded countless wins and impressive rounds –with two standing out that define his renowned status. During the Labour weekend tournament in 1962, Alan carded a round of 77 in the morning before breaking the course record by four strokes in the afternoon with a 33-32-65 eight under par. That scorecard was mounted in the clubhouse as the record until 16-yearold Jordan Green broke the record by one shot in 2011. Alan had missed one qualifying round for the club championships, needing to complete two of the three rounds, and was delayed on his way home from Australia to arrive late to the final round. He teed off at 5.25pm and proceeded to card a 77 in one hour and 12 minutes, finishing in darkness. Car lights shone on the course over the last two holes to light the way but a cigarette lighter illuminated the cup on the final hole for his 7-foot putt. The stuff of legend. Alan is survived by his wife Jill and three children Rachel, Anthony and Jonathan. * Compiled by Jonathan Leask

By Wynne Gray While we may be staggered at the speed and size of Lydia Ko’s success on the LPGA tour her triumphs have not surprised this country’s golfing knight. Not that you’d expect any flamboyant reaction from Bob Charles who continues to carry the sensible button-down demeanour which marked his illustrious career. Wasn’t he a bit surprised at the rate of Ko’s success, especially at her age and in her first year on the professional circuit? “Not at all,” he said emphatically. “I played with her at the Hills a couple of years ago and I could see then that she had a great future and a lot of that credit has to go to her upbringing. “I’ve met her mother on a few occasions and Lydia gives a lot of credit to her, her coach Guy Wilson, NZ Golf and others.” Her success was an illustration of what hard work, discipline and desire could create. She was a great role model and Charles hoped many others would take up the sport to keep them off the streets and away from electronic games. “If they get into golf there are all sorts of upsides,” he added.

Sir Bob Charles: Lydia Ko is the full package.

“I have played professionally for more than 50 years and she has an opportunity for an extended period in the game which should bring her many victories, some majors and financial security.” Ko won three LPGA titles in her rookie year, icing the season with a NZ$630,000 playoff victory in Florida boosted by a NZ$1.26m bonus for nailing the season-long points race. It was a massive result for Ko who went through a number of changes this year basing herself in Florida and swapping to work with new coach David Leadbetter. Charles had not seen enough of Ko’s work to comment on the coaching swap but the logistics made sense

if she was based in the States. Her success was not the result of one special attribute or skill. “It is the combination of a lot of things,” said Charles. “She is the full package. She has a wonderful repeating golf swing. “This game is not about how many good shots you make, it is how few bad shots you hit. She is a short but accurate hitter, fairways and greens are her forte and the ingredients to good scores. “She has got the mental side of the game sorted. Nothing breeds success like success and she has the confidence from that. You see a lot of players who spit and curse and slam their clubs but she is the total opposite.” Charles managed to watch Ko play a couple of the sudden-death playoff holes at Christchurch Airport before flying north this week where he attended a golf function and inspected three new courses being built in Auckland. During his career, Charles was renowned as one of the best putters on tour with his deadly bullseye. “I accepted I would have some bad days but I never lost confidence. If you master your technique you don’t wonder if you have a misread or a miscue. It is about repetition and belief and confidence.” - NZH

Jailed for headbutt Bastia’s Brazilian striker Brandao has been jailed for a month and fined 20,000 euros ($A30,000) for headbutting Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Motta. The three judges yesterday went beyond the prosecutor’s request for an eightmonth suspended term and 15,000 euro fine. Yves Madre, the President of the Paris court, regretted Brandao’s failure to appear in court, which prevented the judges from considering alternative sentences such as community service. - AFP

‘The Power’ coming Darts supremo Phil Taylor will join the small band of sporting world beaters to have played here when he competes in tournaments at Invercargill’s Stadium Southland and Wellington’s Te Rauparaha Arena in January. It is quite a coup for New Zealand sport and the down-to-earth Taylor is more than happy to be playing away from darts’ usual high-profile track. Merrick in trouble Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick expects to be on the sideline to watch his side take on Melbourne City at Westpac Stadium tomorrow despite a potential FFA sanction looming over him. Merrick was issued a “show cause” letter from the FFA this week with regards to the comments he made about the officiating following his team’s 2-1 loss to Adelaide on November 15. The Phoenix have responded on Merrick’s behalf and the FFA were considering Wellington’s stance on the matter before deciding whether Merrick had breached the FFA’s Code of Conduct. - NZME

Warriors want to stay The Warriors will fight to keep their home at Mt Smart, but new chief executive Jim Doyle believes a waterfront venue remains the best long-term solution to Auckland’s stadium conundrum. Doyle is against the NRL club moving to Eden Park or North Harbour Stadium, and wants the council to revisit the waterfront stadium idea and give Auckland a world-class multi-purpose sporting and events venue in the centre of the city. In 2006, a Government proposal for a $500 million waterfront stadium triggered furious debate before the idea was eventually shelved in favour of the $256 million Eden Park upgrade. - NZH

Surfeit of riches at number 10 T

he build-up and entrance of the Welsh team in last weekend’s big clash at the Millenium Stadium was something to behold. The marketing department did themselves proud; the pomp and ceremony was up there with anything the Americans could produce; it’s all becoming quite a fashion statement, as those who can’t play, coach, advise, cook or clean find their own way to contribute to the team cause and create a visual and aural extravaganza. And it’s all topped off with the national anthems and the haka. Our own national anthem is, along with the flag, under increasing fire from well-meaning folk who want to drag us kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Sure it’s not as bouncy and

Steve Devereux MY SHOUT

fluffy as the Aussies’ effort, as violently patroitic as the Yanks’, or as emotively stirring as the Welsh, French or Italian versions, and if you analyse the lyrics some of them are downright absurd - but it’s ours, and it still brings (or should do) a lump to the throat when sung by anybody halfway good in front of the thousands singing along in the stands. You’ll notice that the players are even singing the Maori half now, brilliant! And when it’s followed by a rousing haka, especially if the opposing team do their bit and

challenge the challenge, that’s us set up nicely for a huge test match. The men who select those players who take part in that haka currently have a dilemma on their hands, a dilemma that any team would love - too many top-class number 10s. A possible answer to the upcoming World Cup puzzle is to select three of them - and that’s Barrett, Slade and Cruden - and take along Dan Carter as a consultant, water boy, whatever you want to call him. All year Carter has been lauded as the best first five in the world - but he’s not. Absolutely no question he has been at times the best (or maybe second best, sorry Richie) rugby player in the world over the past decade, but on current form he’s fourth in the pecking order. The men in charge are

voicing confidence that a few months of Super rugby will get him back to the top, and here’s hoping they are right on the money. But if he doesn’t get back to his best, it certainly isn’t the end of the world, as proven when a very tight tussle last weekend was broken open by the introduction of Slade at pivot, bringing a fresh perspective to the backline and allowing Barrett more room to shine from fullback. Two tries worth of shine to be exact. Also, history suggests that at Cup time we tend to motor through first fives at an alarming rate; to have someone like DC in the travelling party would be an undreamed-of luxury, one that every rugby fan (in our country anyway, not in any other) would be extremely happy about.

■ MIRACLE MILE

Terror ‘rank outsider’ Trainer Paul Court says one of his rivals could provide the best chance Terror To Love has to turn around the month from hell in tonight’s Miracle Mile. The wonderful Canterbury pacer began November on the verge of becoming the only four-time winner of the New Zealand Cup but will finish as the rank outsider in the A$750,000 (NZ$815,000) mile at Menangle. That comes on the back of three unplaced runs - all containing some merit - but even worse drawing the outside of the front line for the Mile. Court says he and father Graham never considered pulling the plug on the trip but they are realistic enough to know what the draw means for them. “It would have been a pretty rubbish thing to do, to pull out of a Miracle Mile just because we got a bad draw,” he says. “But it means that we are almost certainly going to end up last, and we need them to go crazy early, like the first 800m in 54 seconds, to come back to us. “Even if that happens though we still have to give Beautide, Christen Me and For A Reason a start and come wider than them to win.” The only more favourable scenario Court sees is Victorian stayer Guaranteed taking

2. Spend time to get informed Knowledge is empowering and creates confidence. A good rule-of-thumb is never to invest in something that you don’t understand or can’t explain easily. There’s no need to become a financial engineer, but a grasp of simple investment concepts will help. For example, understanding if your investments will make you an owner (shares) or a loaner (bonds), will help frame your understanding of investment risk and ensure that you sleep at night without undue anxiety. 3. 5. Prioritise saving for retirement By deducting savings before discretionary income, KiwiSaver is now an effective way for New Zealanders to save relatively effortlessly for retirement. But beware of a false sense-of-security. Most savers will discover that there’s likely to be a significant gap between their desired income in retire-

7. Plan for big moments This not only means ensuring that you have a readily accessible rainy-day-fund in the event of unexpected financial stress (eg temporary loss of paid employment), but that you plan ahead for any major financial events that you are (or hope to be) fully in control of, other than your retirement. For example, payment of your children’s tertiary study fees, replacement of motor vehicles, or essential house maintenance. In summary, there’s no quickfire mechanism to ensure future financial prosperity; patience and planning are key. While the early bird may get the worm, it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese. That means that when it comes to investing, cultivating those habits which focus on both the process and the opportunity are most likely to realise the financial success you seek.

4. Manage debt The key word here is “manage”, which does not infer “eliminate”. Debt can be a useful tool in achieving certain financial goals and is an essential tool for most people seeking to acquire a substantial asset such as their home, or an investment property. But debt that makes you poorer can be described as “bad debt”. In other words, debt where the cost of borrowing exceeds the value created by the loan, may not be in your best financial interest. Typically, money borrowed for motor vehicle purchases, to fund negative credit card balances, or other consumer loans can all be characterised as forms of “bad debt”.

6. Diversify portfolios While the principles behind this concept are generally well understood, less well known is the need to diversify within asset types, not just across them. This may mean holding fixed interest investments with different maturity dates or credit ratings to maintain and enhance yield, or investing in company shares across complementary economic sectors with a combination of growth and income characteristics.

mean sacrificing ownership of your investment decisions. A good adviser will discuss financial matters collaboratively with you, not from a position of assumed superiority. If ever you feel that your interests and concerns are not being taken seriously, or are being taken flippantly, you should probably seek advice elsewhere. Advice from family and friends can be helpful and trusted, but it will be limited to their frame of investment experience, which simply means you won’t necessarily learn everything you need to know.

New Zealand’s relatively high interest rates will continue to lure global investors to the kiwi, creating headaches for local policy makers who, like the rest of the world, want a weaker currency to drive export growth, according to a Sydney-based fund manager. The kiwi dollar has dropped about 11 per cent against the greenback from a peak in July, recently trading at 78.44 US cents, but will continue to find favour as New Zealand interest rates remain higher than its peers, even though they’re low in absolute terms, Gold-

man Sachs Asset Management managing director investment division Philip Moffitt said at an investors’ lunch this week. New Zealand is one of several jurisdictions, including Australia, the US, peripheral Europe and Spain, that provide high quality and high yielding investment exposure. “They’re the high yielders in the world, and there’s been very strong demand continuing in these markets, even though rates have come down,” Moffitt said. “In a low inflation, low rate, low growth environment, the market continues to look for relatively high yields.” – NZME

MONEY MATTERS

BY PAUL MCBETH

14/1

1. Regularly review finances Many people have little idea of where their money is being spent, with one study suggesting that fewer than 40 per cent of people track their spending very closely (KeyBank; Harris Interactive, US). Perhaps as a direct result of this, further research suggests that 40 per cent of people will never gain a net worth in excess of $10,000 (American Dream Education Campaign). Financial self-awareness and the ability to defer nonessential spending is the fundamental step in being able to become a saver or investor. Most people are aware that as their personal income increases, so will their expenditure; however fewer are easily able to reduce spending if their income falls.

Seven key habits of effective investors recent global survey of investors by BlackRock (US) suggests that there are seven habits which characterise those who manage their financial affairs in a highly effective way. According to the survey, those who are able to consistently apply these habits are twice as likely to be confident they are making the right savings and investing decisions, twice as likely to say they enjoy managing their investments and have more than 2.5 times the retirement savings of others.

Summer hunting and fis Mid Canterbury is a fisher and hunter’s paradise known for bountiful catches and hunting, and as the weather heats up early indications are promising for Summer fishing and hunting activity. Even whitebaiters’ are covered with many likely on the district’s river mouths this weekend to net the last of the season’s run – the season ends here tomorrow. Fish and Game New Zealand, South Island communications advisor Andrew Currie says fish stocks are in good condition however the fishing and recent opening of the high country season has seen the region’s fishers hit by wind most days. “Fishing across the region has been hampered a little by the wind we have been experiencing most days. Angling has been especially tricky on the high country waterways, where the Nor’wester has been blowing very strong some days,” he says. Andrew says there are reports of especially good salmon at Lake Heron where the fish are land locked Salmon. “Many caught have been approaching the limit for length which is a maximum of 450mm.” “The catches appear to be up on last year and numbers being caught are promising.

“The Tekapo River (down south) has also fished really well, with fish in great condition and plenty in the 1.5kg to 2kg weight range,” Andrew says. The McKenzie Hydro Canals, joining the Tekapo, Ohau and Pukaki lakes, are proving popular but Lake Heron is also attracting the anglers. The high country lakes were popular on opening weekend and Andrew suggests keen fishers, looking for a sizable catch for the dinner table head to Lake Heron. “Based on reports coming in, a trip to Lake Heron on a calm day would be great,” he says.

they feed on the abundant whitebait supply at this time of year. While Fish and Game New Zealand are experiencing “no compliance issues of real note” Andrew says an issue has been the ignorance of some anglers leaving rubbish and fish frames along the hydro canal edges. “The power companies will not tolerate this forever and may look at putting access restrictions on anglers if attitudes do not change,” Andrew warns. “Please take your rubbish away with you.” The Department of Conservation (DOC)

And as the lower reaches are under some stress from low river flows at present, he recommends fishers target fish closer to the mouth of the river. “Early season salmon have begun to turn up, and they appear to be in great condition so there will be a bit of ‘fever’ building among the salmon anglers. “Sea run brown trout in the lower reaches of the coastal rivers have provided great sport on an evening, with great condition, good size fish being landed.” Andrew says these fish are great eating as

The open area permits are done online. The conservation land in Mid and South Canterbury districts has more than 20 hunting blocks and the DOC website says there are regularly new conservation lands added to the district as a result of tenure reviews. In the blocks there are deer, wallabies, goats, pigs and Tahr. The area is managed from its Geraldine office. The key areas of this office include the conservation areas of the upper Rakaia / Rangitata

catchments, reserves on the Hunter Hills and adjacent foothill catchments. People wanting to hunt on conservation land need to get a permit: each hunter needs their own permit. And they need to get permission of landowners to cross private land. As more people take to the outdoors, walking and tramping, hunters are reminded hunting incidents do happen: even to the most experienced hunters. Remember to identify your target and do not hunt during the hours of darkness.

In summer, exceptional demand for water can sometimes limit the ability of our schemes to consistently deliver water to all properties at the required pressure. Water conservation measures are used to even out demand and enable residents to continue to enjoy reasonable use of water for gardening and other non-essential purposes. Ashburton District Council advises residents connected to Council water schemes, that water conservation measures are in place until further notice. Water conservation measures apply to any use of water from a hose connected to a Council water supply, including garden irrigation systems. YOUR STARS by Forecasters

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) There is a need to keep both your professional and money hats on over the weekend, but with the right time management you can do it all. TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) Embrace what is the last weekend for several months, where you have the luxury of being able to keep your professional hat off. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 22) You have a chance this weekend to get your professional bearings and to take stock, looking to how you’re going to play these final weeks. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 24) Hold onto financial instincts and valuable clues, hunches and insights gained over the last few days, letting things settle over the weekend. LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) We’re not supposed to get everything right all the time, so long as your main focus is on the things and people that really matter. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 23) On cue this weekend’s stars want you to make home, family and relationship matters a priority, conscious of how busy life is set to get. LIBRA (SEP 23 – OCT 23) You’ve got a glimpse of what is destined to become an issue during early 2015, which is finding a balance between work and play. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 24) Take a bold approach to speaking out, with plenty of support on the way and communication becoming a major issue over the coming months and years. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 24 – DEC 21) As you move into your new solar year be prepared to walk the talk in a way that is more about taking time and doing it right from the get go. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20) You’ve got a sense of what excites you, your passions and of what the future could hold, which will make it easier to determine which old doors to close. AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 19) This weekend has the kind of energy that is conducive to light bulb moments, where one idea can provide the spark to change everything. PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 21) While your professional star is on the rise you can’t afford to let life become all work and no play, not with a sense of adventure in the air.
