Calls for Govt to help Kiwi farmers NADINE.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

P12-13

Opposition parties are demanding the Government works with banks to stop them forcing those in the dairy industry with low levels of equity off the land. The calls from both Labour and New Zealand First follow on from a Guardian story last week where a source said a major bank has put a receiver on notice regarding lower equity farmers and would not accept two years of

losses from those highly leveraged. NZ First Primary Industries spokesperson Richard Prosser said farmers needed a fair go to try and fix financial problems in difficult times and believed its Receiverships (Agricultural Debt Mediation) Amendment Bill was urgently needed to keep Kiwi farmers on their farms. As of yesterday the Guardian had contacted all the main agricultural lending banks and had received definite confirmations from ANZ, Ra-

bobank, Westpac and Heartland Bank that they were not the ones involved in putting an Auckland receiver on notice of dairy industry clients that may be about to have their credit pulled. ASB bank failed to respond in time, while the Bank of New Zealand at first confirmed that there were no receivers on stand-by in Mid Canterbury.

The Rotorua princess returns The purchase of a portrait of New Zealand’s first recording star has been declared a “coup” for the people of Rotorua. The oil painting A Princess from the Antipodes – Maori Princess of Rotorua of singer Ana Hato was bought at the International Art Centre auction in Auckland recently for the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust Heritage Collection. The collection aims to preserve the region’s history by collecting art that reflects the district. Curator for the collection, John Perry, said it was a “wonderful moment” to be able to bring the Doris Clare Zinkeisen painting home. “The Rotorua princess has returned,” Mr Perry said.

A Boulder County sheriff ’s deputy got into a face-off with an owl with an attitude, and the owl won. Deputy Sophie Berman came across the raptor on a dirt road this week as Berman patrolled an area near a campground west of Boulder. Berman crouched down to take video footage of the owl and spoke to it, which answered Berman’s words with clicks. The owl stared wide-eyed at the deputy for a few minutes before turning around and flying away.

Sheeran will appear on The Bastard Executioner series on the FX network, The Hollywood Reporter said. The series, which is being filmed in Wales, follows a 14th century warrior who becomes a travelling executioner at the behest of a divine messenger. The ginger-bearded 24-year-old will play Sir Cormac, “an ambitious and deadly protege of a highranking church elder,” the Hollywood trade publication said. The series is expected to launch later this year.

Actress turns wedding celebrant Actress Sharon Stone took on the role of wedding officiant last week when she helped to marry two of her close friends. The Casino star wore a bright red gown to preside over the marriage of publisher Anthony Cenname and his fashion designer partner, David Witkewicz, at the top of The Surrey hotel in New York City on Friday. A guest tells the New York Post, “(Stone was) very moved and choked up with tears.” After the ceremony, Cenname shared a brief video clip of Stone formally announcing the couple as legally wed on his Instagram.com page, while he also uploaded a photo of the grooms and the actress, alongside the caption, “Many thanks to the lady in red for marrying me last night & thanks for all your overwhelming support & congrats.” Cenname and Witkewicz have been together for 15 years.

Newlyweds sue over photos Newlyweds Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have launched legal action against editors at Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper over pictures they published of their baby daughter Wyatt. The couple has filed legal papers in London’s High Court, taking bosses at the website’s publisher, Associated Newspapers, to task over two articles containing “wrongful publication of paparazzi photographs of family outings” used to “promote clothing products by the Mail”. A statement from their lawyer, Paul Tweed, reads, “Ashton and Mila understandably value their private and family life, and in particular their personal time with their daughter. Like any other family they should be allowed to enjoy family outings without being pursued by photographers. They have made it clear that they do not agree to the publication of photographs of such occasions.” The stars wed earlier this month.

■ ASHBURTON TRUST

Trust puts The Shed on market By Daisy HuDson

terday confirmed that those very same reasons were behind the decision to put the building up for sale. The building will be on the market as of Thursday, August 6. “We’ve got no plans to run another nightclub, and we don’t have any other plans that would use that land and buildings, so we decided now would be the time to sell it,” he said.

The Shed opened in October 2007 to fill a gap identified in the market for an entertainment venue for under-30s. It traded profitably for several years and at that stage, there was just one other nightclub in Ashburton. However increased competition saw patronage dwindle and profits fall. “When we closed it there were three competing businesses in

that market which made it difficult to operate profitably,” Mr Reid said. The changes to the LAP, including the introduction of a 1am one-way door policy, had also influenced the decision. When it becomes operational, the LAP will also see bars shut at 2am instead of 3am. “Nightclubs are a challenging business to run,” he said. “They can suck up a lot of re-

sources which we think are better focused on our other businesses.” It was “absolutely” feasible that another nightclub could open in the building given that it would be sold with all of its fittings, he said. Mr Reid declined to discuss the value of the property but according to the Ashburton District Council website it has a capital value of $550,000.

Couger Lounge members are “buzzing” after being named as the band taking the wild card spot at this weekend’s Battle of the Bands 2015 National Championship. The Ashburton rock band received more votes than any other band in the country to take the single spot, after missing out on making it to the finals in a regional competition earlier this month. Drummer Simon Christensen, 32, said he and fellow band members – bass guitarist Steven Symonds, 25, and lead singer and guitarist Brett Colgan, 26 - had their fans to thank, as the wild card spot was for the band which received the highest number of on-line public votes. “We work hard and a lot of people can see we work hard. We practice twice a week and do whatever we can to push ourselves even further, and I think our friends can see that,” Mr Christensen said. Couger Lounge was an originals band, however, it would play covers as well, performing in Ashburton pubs, as well as at weddings and birthdays. Members performed the

Rabobank Northern South Island regional manager David Clarke advised those farmers with sharemilkers who are struggling financially to help retain quality young talent on their farms. “I am aware of some farmer owners who have proactively stepped in to assist their sharemilkers as they work through two low pay-out years.” As at the end of May lending to agriculture totalled $55.8 billion across all banks.

Kirwan opens up to Geraldine students

Worker injured ANZCO Foods is reportedly investigating its second workplace accident in two months after a man was hospitalised on Friday. A spokesman for St John said they were alerted to an incident at the ANZCO factory on Seafield Road at 5.26am on Friday. The male patient, aged in his 50s, was transported to Ashburton Hospital with minor injuries. The man reportedly broke his leg after a carcass he was pushing along a hanger fell on him. WorkSafe has been advised. ANZCO refused to comment on the specifics of the accident while it’s under investigation.

“I resigned before they sacked me.” Former Blues coach Sir John Kirwan promised a rapt crowd of senior students at Geraldine High School that he would be honest, and he certainly didn’t hold back. While he was at the school to talk about his experiences with depression, he couldn’t escape questions about his time in the top job. Mr Kirwan resigned as coach of the Blues earlier this year after a turbulent three-year tenure in the role. He was frank about his decision to leave the underperforming team, telling the crowd “it would be fair to say it didn’t work out”. While the setback in his coaching career was tough, it did provide him with a chance to focus on his campaign to raise awareness about mental illness. Having suffered depression since he was a teenager, Mr

A repeat drink-driver who turned up for court wearing a sweatshirt advertising a brewery raised the ire of her sentencing judge on yesterday. “Did it not occur to you that you are here for aggravated drink-driving and you are wearing a Speight’s hoodie, advertising alcohol”, Judge Dominic Flatley asked Tracey Jane Vaughan (33), bar manager, of Alexandra. Her counsel, Tim Cadogan, apologised when he realised what she was wearing in the Alexandra District Court and asked for the matter to be stood down. Vaughan reappeared in the dock later in the day, wearing the same sweatshirt, turned inside out. “She’s dealt with the shirt as best she can,” Mr Cadogan said. ”She was sentenced to 200 hours’ community work, disqualified from driving for 14 months and sentenced to intensive supervision for 12 months. - NZME

Kirwan has been vocal about the need for more education and discussion about the illness, particularly amongst young people. “I was dead inside,” he told the students. “I couldn’t get out of bed.”

The stigma around mental illness is something he’s campaigned tirelessly against for a long time – after all, the possibility of looking “weak” prevented him from seeking help for five years. Raising awareness among

the younger generations is now a priority for the rugby legend. The most important messages he wanted to get across were to seek help early, to recognise that it is an illness, and that suicide was never the answer.

■ EA NETWORKS CENTRE

CAITLIN.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

People are heading over to test out the waters at the new EA Networks Centre and abandoning their local gyms in the process, says a local gym franchisee. Ashburton District Council sports facilities manager Steve Prescott last week said he didn’t believe the EA Networks Centre was drawing clients from other gyms. He declined to comment any further on the issue when contacted by the Guardian yesterday.

Curves Ashburton franchisee Viv Williams disagreed with Mr Prescott, saying she felt “well and truly slapped by the existence of a further major fitness centre being opened in Ashburton”. “It’s a concern for local gym owners,” she said. Ms Williams believes the new gym’s low membership fees are key in luring in clientele. “[It’s] so much cheaper, significantly cheaper than other gyms in town,” she said. Private business people, that aren’t backed by unlimited

ratepayer funds just could not charge so little and make any sort of profit, she said. Ms Williams said she has lost clients to the new gym, but declined to provide the Guardian with membership figures. Another concerning factor is the new gym is reducing the potential client base for existing gyms, and the slice of the pie is getting smaller, Ms Williams said. She said it is understandable people like to try something new, but the existing gyms have to soldier on and hope

former members return or new members sign up. “Gym owners do have to ride this wave but as the current economic downturn in Mid Canterbury takes its effect it might soon start to feel like riding a tsunami,” Ms Williams said. The Guardian also contacted Gym Company and Finesse Fitness for Women owner John Moore, but he declined to comment. Snap Fitness and CrossFit were also contacted but did not respond before deadline yesterday.

A man has died after a crash between a fully laden logging truck and a ute on State Highway 30 yesterday. Police said initial inquiries indicate the logging truck lost control and collided with the ute. Four people were injured in the crash. A woman travelling in the ute was in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital and a child travelling in the same vehicle was expected to be discharged from hospital. A log which fell from the truck struck a second ute and a woman from that vehicle is in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital. - NZME

■ FREE DOCTORS’ VISITS

GPs notice little effect on visits By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

This week marks a month since children under the age of 13 have been eligible for free doctors’ visits. The new scheme came into effect on July 1 and all seven of Mid Canterbury’s general practices opted in. Methven GP and Pegasus Health Board representative Dr Gayle O’Duffy said initial-

ly she observed an increase in visits, but already it’s settling down. “After the first week, we were really only seeing patients for things that needed to be seen, so no real change on that front,” Dr O’Duffy said. Children need to be registered with a GP to be eligible, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, Dr O’Duffy said. “If the current incentive of

needing to get registered to get the free under 13 care means more children get registered, this is a good thing.” Over all, if GPs are seeing more six to 13-year-olds who are unwell due to the subsidy, then that is a good thing, she said. However, as to whether the funding provided by the Government is adequate, Dr O’Duffy thinks the programme

will need to run for a year before that can be gauged. Ashburton GP spokeswoman Dr Charlotte Cox said she hasn’t noticed an influx of under 13s since the scheme was implemented, but believed it was “far too early” to assess effectiveness and questioned how it would be measured. When the visits began, Canterbury District Health Board team leader of planning and

funding Dr Greg Hamilton said he expected visits to the doctor within the district would increase as a result of the change, but by how much was yet to be determined. Early experience from the Northland District Health Board, which introduced zero fees for under 13s in October of last year indicated visits to GPs increased by 10 per cent within the first six months.

A community leader says witch doctors are fleeing the country in droves under threat of deportation. Pratima Nand said witch doctors were established across New Zealand and the scale of their business was bigger than previously acknowledged. Ms Nand, who helped blow the whistle on Indian witch doctors allegedly conning vulnerable and superstitious people, believed one woman from the Indian community paid a “sixfigure” sum to a shaman. Ms Nand said she’d received about 10 complaints from people who had believed witch doctors could help with finance, business, love, health and even immigration issues. Some of these people handed over personal details and photos to the witch doctors. “There are many more who are not even speaking out for fear of shame and danger ... if their identity is found out.” Some of the alleged victims were scared the “priests” could reverse black magic spells, Ms Nand said. “A lot of people are coming forward now with bigger and bigger stories and worse and worse stories.” - NZME

Victim forgives his abusers A Fijian rugby player racially abused at a rugby game in Christchurch on Sunday has forgiven the supporters who shouted abuse from the sidelines. Christchurch winger Sake Aca asked to be subbed off the field during the Division 1 Hawkins Trophy club rugby final after being subjected to racial abuse. Aca told 3News on Tuesday that he had forgiven the spectators, who he believed were supporting the opposition Lincoln University. “I left the field and had a seat on the bench and I was thinking of my family, my two daughters and my wife,” he said. “We all make mistakes.” 3News reported that Aca, a former police officer in Fiji, wants Canterbury Rugby Union to find the spectators who yelled the abuse and take action against them. On Monday Canterbury Rugby Union (CRU) commu-

nity rugby general manager Tim Gilkison said the union’s immediate focus was on trying to find the identity of who was responsible for the comments. “We’re trying to establish whether we can identify [those responsible] through any sources that we’ve got, like footage of that fixture.” Lincoln University was conducting its own investigation and Dr John Hay, Interim Vice-Chancellor of Lincoln University, said they were of the understanding that it was member of the public standing on the grass embankment that made the racially abusive comments. “Lincoln University in no way condones behaviour of this kind in any sporting code and is saddened to hear that this occurred at the rugby match. “The University will work with the Canterbury Rugby Football Union, as well as conducting our own internal investigation.” - NZME

Eight in court after police raid Seven men and one woman appeared in Auckland District Court yesterday facing charges associated with the Operation Sylvester bust in Auckland and Whangarei yesterday. The accused range in age from 31 to 62 and live in North Shore, south Auckland, west Auckland and Ruakaka. They were all granted interim name suppression. Three of the accused, a 62-year-old man, a 43-year-old man and a 32-yearold woman, were remanded on bail. The remaining four, all men, were remanded in custody ahead of bail application hearings this week and next. The number of charges each of the people involved are facing range from one man only facing one charge, to an-

Goodhew meets target By Daisy HuDson

Daisy.h@theguarDian.co.nz

New figures reveal that Rangitata’s MP has come up trumps when meeting the government’s target for appointing women to high-powered roles in the state sector. However many of her colleagues have come under fire for falling well below the 45 per cent goal. Figures released to media by the Human Rights Commission show Jo Goodhew has appointed a higher percentage of women to boards and committees than any of her ministerial colleagues. In 2014, 19 out of 26 Ministers failed to meet the Government’s goal of giving 45 per cent of those appointments to women. Ms Goodhew said women nominees for board appoint-

ments tended to outnumber men within the Community and Voluntary Sector portfolio that she holds, something that may not be the case in some other portfolios. “As the former Minister for Women’s Affairs I am well aware of ensuring women are well represented in board po-

sitions,” she said. “It is important that board appointments are made based on merit, however when a gender imbalance is present I do seek to appoint women if their experience and skills matches that of their male counterparts.” Her colleague and neigh-

bouring MP, Justice Minister Amy Adams, was one of those who fell short of the target. However Ms Adams said the figures did not accurately reflect Ministers’ records. “The statistics cover the calendar year from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2014,” she said. “Taking into account the General Election, some portfolios have been held by two Ministers during that time period.” Since becoming Justice Minister she had appointed 65 per cent of women between November 2014 and June 2015, she said. As Broadcasting Minister she had appointed 60 per cent. “Appointing women isn’t just a numbers game,” she said. “It’s primarily about merit.”

Rural Women’s 90th Mid Canterbury Provincial Rural Women New Zealand members will celebrate their national organisation’s 90th anniversary today. An afternoon tea will be held at the Seniors Centre from 3pm to 4pm, and members are invited to wear furs, pearls and hats, as well as bring a small plate for afternoon tea, along with a fancy cup. Rural Women New Zealand was officially founded on July 29, 1925. While her husband William Polson attended the New Zealand Farmers Union annual meeting, Florence Polson called a meeting with the other farmers’ wives. It was to discuss concerns of the health and well-being of women and children in the back blocks. It was agreed to form an association “to take up matters affecting the welfare of women and children”, and Mrs Polson was elected as the first president. Today’s national president Wendy McGowan celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Hawera branch with a cake and party last weekend, while the official national celebration will be at the national conference and AGM in Nelson in November.

■ MID CANTERBURY SCHOOLS’ MUSIC FESTIVAL REVIEW

Delightful evening of entertainment Ashburton Trust Event Centre Reviewed by Moyra Whiting Snow may well have interrupted plans more than a month ago, but the rescheduled date for the final night of the annual schools’ music festival served only to enhance the enthusiasm and energy of those performing. With confidence and clarity, presenters Lucy and Mia introduced what proved to be a truly delightful evening of musical entertainment. The massed choir conducted by Anna Lischner warmed us

up with the well known theme from the Muppet show. Allenton School presented the Monkees theme and a touch of reggae with the Bob Marley song Three Little Birds. Conductor Fiona Maw had her choir well rehearsed in their delivery with perfectly timed actions and diction. A small choir from Waihi School gave a tuneful rendition of See You Again. It was a pleasure to observe a group of boys enjoying themselves. The massed choir under the command of Kerrin Lester sang with precision and a par-

ticular favourite was the song titled Roar. This intricate piece demanded the full attention of all and the conductor certainly gained what she asked for. St Joseph’s choir, under the baton of Anna Lischner, sang with feeling and a lovely tone. Conductor Debbie Hawkes brought out the very best from the Ashburton Intermediate choir. Soloists, those playing backing instruments and members of this choir worked as one to produce items well received by the audience. To achieve success when working with syncopated tim-

ing is no easy task. Fiona Maw conducted the massed choir as they sang a bracket of three songs, the favourite being California Dreamin’. With the addition of four dancers, this item was charming. I observed many children on the stage watching keenly as the Ashburton College String group did their presentation. It was a golden opportunity for this group to perform and for younger students to witness what is possible. The representative choir with Elaine Vallender at the helm were outstanding. Three very

different songs enabled these children to demonstrate why they were selected to be part of this choir. Attention to detail in all things musical made this performance one to remember. To those who had the privilege of performing in a solo role, congratulations. Each and everyone of you shone in your moment. To the conductors, teachers, stage hands, children and all involved in the execution of this festival, congratulations and thank you. It was an evening of warmth to ward off the winter chills.

Secrecy over deal raises fears Stu Oldham

EDITOR

A

ll eyes are again on a secretive trade partnership that few of us fully understand but which will nonetheless affect the livelihoods of countless Mid Cantabrians. Talks to affirm the Trans Pacific Partnership, a controversial free trade agreement between 12 countries including New Zealand, are in their final stages. Its details remain secret but there is broad opposition to a deal many worry will cede national sovereignty and benefit the United States and Japan over all others. There are legitimate fears it will come with everything from proscriptive copyright provisions, to allowing foreign investors to sue governments if law changes harm their investments. Governments here and elsewhere have struggled to bat away these concerns. The mantra has been that free access to massive markets will make the partners more prosperous. It is difficult for governments, anywhere, to say much else when so much of the agreement has been, and continues to be, developed and debated behind closed doors. For example, Prime Minister John Key yesterday confirmed the partnership would see drug patents last longer, which means drug-buying agencies such as Pharmac would pay higher prices for longer. Patients were unlikely to pay more, he said, because the government was likely to pay the difference. Thus, another part of the free trade deal was demonstrably less than free. At the same time, the sectors that hope to benefit from the deal are still none-the-wiser about how successful our negotiators have been in pressing their cause. Major earners such as the beef and dairy sectors want damaging tariffs dropped to give free – and lucrative – access to the likes of the United States, Japan and Canada. These and other wins must be chalked up if free access to massive markets are to make New Zealand more prosperous, particularly given the concessions it may be forced to make. And there will be concessions that secrecy has already made seem sinister.

ast week Andrew Dalziel, councillor Russell Ellis and I attended the Local Government New Zealand Conference in Rotorua, representing the Ashburton District Council. These annual conferences not only serve to help keep us connected to other leaders from local authorities around the country, but also to learn about new initiatives and ideas to help improve services and systems in the public sector. Some of the key speakers included Kevin Roberts, executive chairman at Saatchi and Saatchi giving his opinion on how councils should tell their story and sell the value of the sector. David Meates, chief executive of the Canterbury District Health Board, explained to us understanding what’s important to communities and why a strong focus on the customer matters. I agreed with him. One of the most interesting presentations was on the local government funding review. This is a plan on incentivising economic growth and strong local communities through various mechanisms such as better funding partnerships with central government, businesses, and communities along with innovative changes to service delivery, funding, and finance. Council’s funding and finances have been a key focus of the recent long-term plan consultation discussions. Property taxes, otherwise known as rates, make up a large part of the funding for council’s operations. The council’s borrowing against its assets is another key part of the financing plan for big projects. What was clear,

funding outside of rates rises. Some of the innovations LGNZ are proposing include allowing trials of new ideas in special zones at the district or regional level to lead economic policy at the national level. The more controversial proposals include increased costsharing agreements between national government and local councils to cover costs of com-

local road infrastructure costs. Other proposed actions in the LGNZ paper are ideas that we, as a council, could consider taking action on in the short term, such as simplifying the process for rates rebates schemes and developing best practice guidelines with other councils on choosing between targeted user-charge rates schemes versus general rates to pay for

services. LGNZ’s plan is to develop an advocacy and implementation plan for its proposals and is aiming to have some of these under way by early 2016. This is good timing as many councils such as ours are facing increased costs in a tight economic environment – particularly with the downturn in dairy prices. Economic development is a popular topic. As part of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum chaired by Dame Margaret Bazley (head commissioner of ECan), over the past year I have been working with the other Canterbury mayors on the Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy. This strategy will be released to the public in late August, and ties in well with the LGNZ plan by reinforcing the importance of councils leading local economic development to contribute to national economic prosperity. I will write more about the strategy closer to the time of the launch in August.

In brief

■ TURKEY

Civil war likely to escalate The Middle East continues its slide into chaos with Turkish warplanes joining the fray in Syria, further embroiling Nato’s eastern rampart in that country’s civil war, potentially escalating an already punishing conflict. The airstrikes in Aleppo, coupled with sweeping arrests of Isis (Islamic State) supporters and operatives across Turkey in the past month, appear to represent an end to Turkish collusion with the extremists and raise the prospect of deeper Turkish co-operation with the US-led coalition taking the fight to Isis in the past year. Since February, an alliance of Kurdish fighters and Free Syrian Army units - the latter believed to be supported by Turkey’s National Intelligence Organisation, under US pressure - has driven Isis off a vast stretch of the Turkey-Syria border. That sweep, bolstered by US airstrikes, reached its limits near the Isis-controlled frontier town of Jarablus just over

a month ago, culminating in the fall of Tal Abyad, a frontier town of significant strategic value to the extremist group. Demographics and lingering ethnic hostilities forbid the predominantly Kurdish force, known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, expanding much further west into turf

controlled by Arab militias backed by a host of regional powers, including Turkey fighting the Syrian regime. It is unclear what concessions Ankara has extracted from the US in exchange for supporting the push to rid border zones of Isis. However, the Turkish press

is rife with reports of an “antiIsis no-fly zone” being established 40km deep and 100km wide in the northern Aleppo countryside. Turkey’s military reinforced that 100km stretch of border, controlled by Isis on the Syrian side, with tanks, armoured combat vehicles and military personnel this month. Such a zone would see the extremist group cut off from the border, which it relies on heavily for foreign fighter flows, resupply and for oil smuggling operations worth millions of dollars each day. It would also keep supply lines into Aleppo open for rebel factions. Ankara provides robust military and logistical support to a range of rebel factions seeking the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar alAssad. Meanwhile, the ceasefire between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, has largely broken down, with Turkish planes hammering the group in Iraq. - AFP

Lord ‘snorted cocaine, cavorted with prostitutes’ Lord Sewel’s London residence has been searched after Scotland Yard launched an investigation into alleged drug-taking. In a statement, the Met said no arrests have been made at this stage but confirmed a criminal investigation into allegations of drug-related offences involving a member of the House of Lords was under way. The force said one complaint had been received but added

the investigation had already begun when this was raised. A Met Police spokesman said: “A warrant under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, was today granted at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. “The warrant was executed at 1800hrs at an address in central London by officers from the Special Enquiry Team of the Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC). “No arrests have been made

at this stage and enquiries are ongoing.” The Labour peer has said he has no intention to leave the House of Lords despite pressure from David Cameron over allegations that he snorted cocaine while cavorting with prostitutes. Lord Sewel announced that he will instead take a “leave of absence” while investigations are carried out and consider his position afterwards.

He made the decision to retain his peerage despite a suggestion by David Cameron that he should either resign or quit. Under the terms of his “leave of absence”, Lord Sewel will not be able to claim any allowances and will have to give three months’ notice if he plans to return. Should he decide to stay, however, he will be entitled to claim parliamentary allowances of £200 a day. - AP

Blast ‘multiple murder’ A northwest Queensland mining town is reeling as homicide detectives prepare to investigate the deaths of a man and two young children in an explosion. Bush pushes reform Republican White House hopeful Jeb Bush has vowed to launch comprehensive immigration reform, including stronger borders and finding a way for the 11 million undocumented people in the USA to make their status legal. Back in 2008, then-candidate Barack Obama pledged to seek a major immigration policy reform that would let the undocumented stay indefinitely. But his efforts hit a wall in the Republican-run congress. According to former Florida governor Bush, a president is only going to be able to carry off the sometimes controversial issue if the new leader “is committed to protecting the border” and to building people’s trust. - AFP

Paedophile ringleader A female rapist in the UK has been found guilty of running a paedophile ring which subjected five children to sexual and physical abuse over more than a decade. Ten people - including six women - were on trial accused of the child sex abuse which is said to have centred around Marie Black, 34, of Norwich. She denied 26 offences at Norwich Crown Court but after 19 hours of deliberations and a three-month trial, the jury convicted her of all but three counts. - AP

■ PROPOSED BORDER TAX

Coalition: Border tax of no benefit

EMPLOYMENT MATTERS

A

man who was fired for using his company credit card while on a three-day weekend in Las Vegas has been awarded $10,000 compensation. Yval Shoshany’s employment with Wellington-based 4RF Limited was terminated in March, after he used a work credit card to rack up more than $20,000 worth of personal expenses. In January this year, Mr Shoshany, based in 4RF’s Israel office as Director of Global Systems Engineering, travelled to the US on business where he attended meetings in Phoenix and San Diego. In a weekend between the two meetings he visited Las Vegas. While there he made cash withdrawals and purchased personal items using the company credit card totalling about $11,500. The company CFO contacted Mr Shoshany asking him to explain the list of recent credit card transactions. The CFO told Mr Shoshany:

“This level of personal expenditure on the company credit card is unacceptable; this is not a private banking arrangement that can be used to fund personal expenses.” He then cancelled the credit card. Mr Shoshany acknowledged he had made a “foolish and naïve mistake” and said he now realised he should have spoken to the head office to ask for permission in advance. He said the mistake would never happen again and asked them to accept his apology. Following a disciplinary meeting the chief executive concluded Mr Shoshany’s conduct had “damaged trust and confidence” and his actions amounted to serious misconduct, warranting summary dismissal. The Employment Relations Authority disagreed with the company’s decision and ordered 4RF to reimburse Mr Shoshany with three-and-half

months’ lost wages and $10,000 compensation. The authority said that a fair and reasonable employer could not dismiss an employee for conduct it had previously condoned without some intervening notice that it would no longer tolerate the behaviour. Sitting behind Mr Shoshany’s dismissal was a perception by 4RF that the use of the credit card was deceptive and/or dishonest. However, no evidence was furnished to support either of those inferences. The authority found that 4RF had not identified conduct that was so serious that dismissal was an option available to it and found the dismissal was “procedurally and substantively unjustified”. of outbound travel may impact on the economics of airline services and adversely impact on air connectivity. Legislation passed immediately following the Budget clears the way to impose the Travel Tax, but does not require that it be imposed, Mr Roberts points out. “A secure border is in the interests of every New Zealander and certain sectors that are direct beneficiaries are not contributing to the cost under these proposals. If the Government insists on moving away from the public good model, the cost burden should be shared,” Mr Roberts said. “More work needs to be done to decide the appropriate split, further supporting the need for delay.” The coalition wants any travel tax to be zero-rated for GST, to avoid a tax on a tax. It also wants the establishment of a traveller reference group to monitoring how the funds collected are allocated each year. – APNZ

posed, its design, timing and implementation needed significant amendment. The tax was put together in haste immediately before the May Budget with very limited analysis and no consultation which has annoyed the tourism sector. “It ignores a long-standing understanding in New Zealand that border services are a public good and should therefore be funded from general taxation,” Mr Roberts said. Further analysis from the international airline and cruise industries suggests the $104 million figure underestimates the impact of the tax. New Zealanders will make up almost half of the travellers required to pay the tax. Outbound passengers were a crucial element in airline economics. Any discouragement

The proposed maximum amount payable for a cruise ship traveller on a round trip is $26.22 and for remaining travellers is $21.85 While horticulturalists have welcomed extra funding to help keep out pests, the coalition says there will be no benefit to the economy from the tax. A heavyweight travel industry coalition is calling for the Government to rethink its border tax which it says could wipe more than $100 million a year from visitor spending. The group says it has uncovered documents that show there is no basis to assertions by Prime Minister John Key, who is also tourism minister, that the tax would not make a “blind bit of difference” to visitor numbers. The Coalition Against Travel Tax says the border clearance levy introduced in the May Budget will be a handbrake on expanding the visitor economy. The tax is aimed at funding increased work by Customs and the Ministry for Primary Indus-

Try polenta for a change P

olenta is a traditional Italian food made with cornmeal. It can be used as a mash, replacing potatoes, or grilled or fried once cooked. Boil three cups of water/ stock/milk or a mix of all three, and half a teaspoon of salt in a heavy-based saucepan. Gradually add one cup of polenta stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Reduce heat to low and cook for 20 minutes stirring often. When cooked stir in two tablespoons of olive oil or butter and beat until smooth.

Try substituting olive oil with grated cheese if using as a mash. Either eat as is, as a side with sausages, casserole or stew, or pour into a glass dish to set in the fridge.

Polenta toasts with a tasty topping Cut the polenta into evenly-sized squares, then cut each square in half diagonally. Cook the toasts in a lightlygreased, heavy frypan at a medium heat for about five minutes on each side until golden brown.

Topping (can be made while polenta is cooling) 2 cloves of crushed garlic 2 red onions, sliced vertically 1 sprig of thyme or a handful of sage 1T balsamic vinegar 1/4 C chopped, bottled, roasted red bell peppers About 1/4 C of feta or blue cheese ■ Place the onion and garlic in a well-oiled heavy based fry pan and cook on a medium heat for three minutes, or until the onion begins to sweat. Add the balsamic vinegar, turn the heat down and continue to cook slowly for 30 minutes until the onion

is very soft. ■ Combine with the rest of the ingredients and put on top of the polenta toasts.

Polenta with salmon and fennel 2 salmon fillets 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 C minced red onion 1T olive oil 1T balsamic vinegar 1T capers, rinsed and drained Freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste 1T chopped fresh parsley ■ Cook polenta as above, but with

Celebrating age and the support of loved ones

R

ecently I celebrated a milestone birthday with my family by holidaying in Fiji, relaxing in balmy weather while Ashburton was having one of the coldest spells on record. It was such an awesome holiday and what pleasure it was seeing teenage grandchildren spending precious time together and having so much fun. More significantly was the opportunity for my children to be able to take time out from their busy lives and away from work distractions. I had contemplated banning all cellphones, but that would have been too radical. It reinforced for me how important it is to take these op-

portunities not only to celebrate occasions but to have quality family time together. As we reach the golden years, although not in the workforce, we are busy volunteering with the many needy causes and not taking enough family time out. Part of our holiday was spent on a ship cruising around small islands, at times disembarking to enjoy the unique hospitality of the villagers.

As on previous Pacific Island experiences I had always noticed how the elders of the villages are respected and cared for. Now that I seemed to have reached that category I realised that I too was receiving that respect. There’s always someone on hand to assist, particularly on uneven terrain. There are no resthomes in Fiji, just respect and the importance of families looking after each other. Subsistence living it may be, but it is a happy and healthy race of people. In our society there is an expectation that either the Government or some organisation

will look after the elders of our community. We do receive a universal pension, how we spend that is our choice. There are many not for profit organisations offering support for older people who are lonely and who often feel unwanted, sadly in some cases even by family. Age Concern is one of those groups which focuses on quality of life for the older person, providing programmes that keep people active and motivated by celebrating age. If you would like help or know of anyone needing support please make contact with Age Concern Ashburton located at the Seniors Centre.

an extra half a cup of water. ■ Fry salmon in a greased skillet skin-side down for three minutes, remove from heat and place on tin foil squares large enough to form a parcel around each piece of fish. ■ Season the fish with salt and pepper and cover with thinly sliced lemon and fennel leaves. Wrap the foil firmly around the fish and place in an oven preheated to 180°C. ■ Cook for 10 minutes and turn oven off. Allow fish to rest. ■ Toss the remaining ingredients in a bowl. ■ Serve the salmon on top of the polenta and drizzle with the tomato mix.

■ METHVEN THEATRE COMPANY

Office politics to the fore BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Methven Theatre Company’s upcoming production A Law Unto Themselves has a new main cast member after one of its actors unexpectedly had to quit the show. Production manager Olivia James confirmed yesterday that Conor Sturgess, who was to play the tall, dark and handsome metro-man Stephan Darling-Smith, had to stop rehearsals recently.

The good news was that the role had been filled by the talented Markus Body, a former Mount Hutt College deputy head boy who is in his first year of studying law at the University of Canterbury. Ms James said she was excited about the script, which showcased unravelling office politics at a dysfunctional, small-town law firm. This year’s production is packed full of new faces and newcomers made up more than

half of the cast. Ms James said this was a novelty for a company which often cast many well-known acting stalwarts. “It’s great to have these new faces and locals will be amazed at who our cast members turn into. Without giving too much away, there’s the whole range of “classic” office personalities,” she said. The show’s playwright, Dunedin-based Tim Hambleton, may travel to Methven to see

the production, at what would be its second staging. A Law Unto Themselves is being directed by Georgie Sivier of Ashburton. Fellow cast members are William Hodgetts, Tammy Dickson, Kate Lambarth, Patrice Hammond, Gemma Bell, Becky Dirks, Annie Jacobs, Louise Sandlant, Liam Woods and Wayne Pannett. The play will stage from August 19 to 22 at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall.

■ ZONTA YOUTH ART AWARDS

A great opportunity for young artists The annual Zonta Youth Art Awards offers a rare opportunity for Mid Canterbury’s teenage artists, says the Ashburton Art Gallery communications officer.

Nicole Bourke said the awards offered a chance not only for young artists to have their work judged alongside their peers, but the opportunity to exhibit in a public gallery.

The awards are held annually and are for 16- to 19-yearolds normally living in Mid or South Canterbury. Entry forms have been sent to schools and are available at

the Ashburton Art Gallery. The awards will open with an awards function on August 28, and for the public the following day, running until September 20. Entries close on August 20.

In brief Tupou wants a brawl Bowie Tupou is preparing to lure Joseph Parker into a war in their heavyweight fight in Invercargill on Saturday, a tactic he believes is his best chance of winning. Looking at it objectively, it’s probably his only chance, and it’s a scenario Parker and trainer Kevin Barry will be desperately wanting to avoid. In their first press conference together since the fight was announced, Barry joked it could be a “phonebox fight”, with Tupou’s trainer Jeff Fenech replying: “All right, well, we hope so”. - NZME

Neesham leads the way All-rounder Jimmy Neesham has featured in a winning start to the Black Caps tour of Africa with a convincing 73-run victory against the North West Cricket Club yesterday at Potchefstroom in South Africa. The 24-year-old from Otago, who had not played for the Black Caps since the tour of the United Arab Emirates last year against Pakistan, was impressive in the warm-up match on his comeback from a stress fracture in his back. Neesham starred with the bat hitting an unbeaten 54 from only 29 balls and then picked up two wickets with the ball in a complete performance. - NZME

Mid Canterbury’s Under 15 A and B teams took to the court for their first tournament of the year last weekend. The U15As had a mixed run in their section of the Mainland Championship Competition, which got off to a start in Ashburton. Coach Janene McDowell said Mid Canterbury’s first game was against one of the most experienced teams in their pool – Christchurch 3. McDowell said she experi-

mented with positioning on the court during the team’s first game, but a win just wasn’t on the cards – Christchurch took the match out 29-22. McDowell said she could see her defensive end was strong, and as a result, went into the South Canterbury match with more direction. That paid off as Mid Canterbury came away with a convincing 34-14 win. In the final game, they played North Canterbury and it was a 30-all draw. “We’ve had no pre-season

games so we went in quite blind but being reps you have to go hard … you just can’t come off the pedal at all,” McDowell said. Under 15B coach Kirsty Naish travelled to Nelson with her team for the Mainland Championship Competition, and said her charges produced a great team effort. The B’s first game was against Marlborough, but unfortunately the match started slow and Mid Canterbury trailed by eight in the first quarter.

“[It was a] good first effort, everyone got on the court and showed some good skills,” Naish said. The B’s second game was against Nelson, and was a tough one. Mid Canterbury lost the match 45-11, Naish said the team took a long time to adjust to Nelson’s strong and skilful play. Both U15 teams will be busy again this weekend, as the U15 Mainland Championship Competition continues in Christchurch on Sunday.

Johnson already thinking about 2016 season

Shaun Johnson said he felt “a yuck feeling” as he sustained the leg and ankle injury which has sidelined the Warriors star halfback for four to five months. It was a sickening blow for the Warriors on a night that Andrew McFadden described as one of the worst he could remember during his time as head coach. The Warriors fell apart af-

ter Johnson’s injury and a galvanised Manly team took full advantage to win 32-12 at Mt Smart on Saturday. He broke his fibula and partially dislocated his ankle in scoring a try and he will also miss the Kiwis tour of England in November. In an interview Johnson recalled what happened and remained upbeat about his return

as well as the Warriors’ prospects for the rest of 2015. “I just remember playing the game and going towards the try line and feeling my leg go,” said Johnson. “Someone came down on it and I sort of had a yuck feeling. The doctor looked at me, and that was me done.” It’s the first serious injury Johnson has had since he made his NRL debut in 2011 and the

road to recovery starts now as he left hospital today. Johnson confirmed his surgeon was happy with the operation and he’ll now be in a plaster for 10 days before he gets put in a moon boot. The 24-year-old is already talking up his comeback trail as he bids to return to full fitness in time for the 2016 NRL campaign. - NZME

Australia opener Chris Rogers came through a testing session yesterday in the nets at the hands of his own team-mates and is set to play in the third test against England at Edgbaston, starting tonight (NZT). The five-test series is tied 1-1 after England surprised many by winning the opener in Cardiff before Australia inflicted a massive 405-run defeat on the hosts at Lord’s with a double century from Steve Smith. Rogers is “good to go,” according to Mitchell Starc, one of several Australian pace bowlers operating at full speed in practice against the 37-year-old batsman. - NZME

SKD back training Shaun Kenny-Dowall could return to the NRL on Sunday week after the Sydney Roosters star trained for the first time since his arrest and release from hospital. The New Zealand international took part in a weights session on Monday ahead of an expected light training run last night. Kenny-Dowall missed the Roosters wins over the Warriors and Wests Tigers but coach Trent Robinson says the prolific tryscorer is a chance to be selected for his side’s round 22 clash against Newcastle. - AAP

Legends slam sacking Some of Manly’s biggest names have savaged the decision to sack Geoff Toovey as the club’s coach for the 2016 NRL season. Toovey’s axing has opened a political divide at the Sea Eagles with the Manly Warringah Rugby League Football Club board, including Cliff Lyons, Mal Cochrane and Darrell Williams, describing the decision as “bewildering”, as well as a “sad day” for the club. The club board in a statement, which was also signed by Sea Eagles director Bob Stevenson, praised Toovey for services throughout his 268 game playing and coaching career. - AAP

■ RUGBY

Smith’s CV still the best By Wynne Gray Among the many fine centres who have worn the All Black jersey, Conrad Smith sits in the top tier. His exploits and longevity in the national game allow him to be measured against those who have excelled since World War Two, players such as Bruce Robertson, Frank Bunce, Tana Umaga, Joe Stanley, Bill Davis, Paul Little and Johnny Smith. All brought selfless attributes as special virtues in that role where organisation is a necessity, patience is expected, skills and decision-making are imperative. Patterns in rugby have changed significantly from Johnny Smith’s days through to Conrad Smith, but the demands at centre have not varied vastly. It is becoming the domain of bigger men, though, where large frames can bend the line or push their hands through contact for offloads. Defensive reads and execution are repeat demands. Smith’s rugby intelligence has taken him to most rugby grounds in the globe where, alongside a strong association with Ma’a Nonu, he has provided the dependable ticket in midfield. “I’ve always found it’s a position where you have to re-

Conrad Smith: Still the man to wear 13 for the All Blacks.

ally adjust to the second fiveeighths you are playing with and the rest of the backline really, the wings, the fullback,” Smith said. “It’s only when you are more experienced that you can do that. You sort of have to understand what the second fiveeighth does.” Passes out in front of teammates, straight running lines, a grubber poked in behind the line, strong chases or support play - Smith ticks those elements which fill out a top centre’s CV.

It’s about being in the right place and offering chances on attack and filling in the defensive lines. It’s about being a voice. Smith is quitting the top stuff after his third World Cup, where skilled men who operate under intense strain will be essential in the playoffs. To these eyes, he has lost a nip of speed but compensates with his anticipation and “reads” on defence. Not all the time, though, and Jesse Kriel’s angle running and bust between Smith and Nonu in the Ellis Park test was an-

other of those times when someone got it wrong. Kriel squeezed through a small gap while Smith and Nonu flailed. A few years ago at Twickenham, Brad Barritt gave Smith a torrid time on defence. There have been others. It happens. There are challengers but do any suggest more All Black surety than Smith? Malakai Fekitoa may have more attacking edge and his passing game has improved but he does shoot up out of the line, which leaves holes if he does not nail his victim. Ryan Crotty is another whose low number of errors and high workrate may best mirror the strengths Smith brings to the All Blacks. Playing Nonu or Sonny Bill Williams would shift them from their best position at second five-eighth, while Charles Piutau has not had enough work in that role. Fast forward to the World Cup quarter-finals. It’s a crunch match, a knockout game with all the pressure of sudden-death finality. Who presents the frame and brain for those demands and will respond to that test? Right now it’s still the reliable Smith but the gap is closing from within the All Blacks and the other World Cup aspirants. - NZME

All Blacks in the same way they lost to the Wallabies was disappointing and hurt the team badly, but is hopeful they will be the better for it in their remaining Rugby Championship test against Argentina next week. The Springboks once again let go of a commanding posi-

Samoa did it first The legitimacy of Richie McCaw’s winning try against the Springboks has been fiercely debated. However, in the aftermath of the gamewinning five-pointer, evidence has come out to suggest that Samoa had previously pulled off the set play in the past. In 2013 - also against the Springboks - the Samoans utilised the move in the 70th minute, when down 42-16, resulting in a try for their replacement halfback Junior Poluleuligaga. There was no controversy over the tactic at the time, as opposed to McCaw’s effort, where it was debated whether he entered the lineout before the ball had left hooker Codie Taylor’s hands. - NZME

Team ready to fight The boss of Tour de France winner Chris Froome says he was “ready to rumble” after concerns over his Team Sky’s safety. David Brailsford has led Team Sky to three tour victories in the last four years and he revealed they were preparing for violence after attacks on this year’s tour. Froome has been spat on, doused with urine and received abuse from spectators on the roadside. The team have also had to defend themselves against accusations of doping. He told media: “What we went through last year was pretty shocking, and we thought it was going to be even worse this year. So we decided, ‘right, we are going to have to defend ourselves.’ We thought our windscreen might get smashed, and we were ready.” - AFP

Man U grabs Romero Manchester United yesterday confirmed the signing of Argentine keeper Sergio Romero on a threeyear deal. The 28-year-old will replace Victor Valdes, who was shown the door at Old Trafford after apparently refusing to play for United’s second team. “To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me,” said Romero on the club’s website. “Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this exciting challenge in my career.” - AFP

Nelsen supports appeal Former All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen says New Zealand Football should continue to fight against disqualification from the Olympic Games. NZF confirmed they would appeal the decision that currently means they’ll miss out on Rio next year. Nelsen, 37, captained the All Whites at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic tournaments and he said that NZF have “a duty of care to the players to take this (appeal) as far as they possibly can.” - NZME

It’s tough at the top Los Angeles Clippers basketballer Josh Smith has claimed that living on his $6.9 million salary will make things “harder” on his family. Smith, who signed with the Clippers this month after spending last season split between the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets, uttered this out-of-touch quote at his introductory press conference this week. “At the end of the day, you know, I do have a family,” he said. “So it is going to be a little harder on me this year. But I’m going to push through it, you know. ... I made a decision for me and my family.” - AFP

The 25-year-old set her personal high in 2007-08 with 53 winners and she is one shy of that total with engagements at Te Awamutu and Avondale to come this week before beginning the new term on Saturday. “I’m definitely trying to get to 54 and I’ve got two more days to do it,” Collett said. “Overall, I’ve been really happy with the season.” She has seven rides at the Waipa meeting today with the Brent Gillovic-trained debutant Grey Ghost in the Limmer Lodge 1150 one of her best chances after Collett rode him to a trial win earlier this month. “He gave me a nice feel and he looks like being a nice three-yearold,” she said.

“He’s on his home track again and he won on a wet track so he’s got a lot going for him.” Collett’s mount in the other two-year-old event on the card, the OTL Group 1150, is Graham Richardson’s promising firststarter Faceup. “She’s a short, nuggety filly and a tough little sort who made a nice impression on me at the trials,” she said. Collett also tipped the Mark Brooks-prepared Maranui as an outside chance in the Reka Racing 2000. “He has been unlucky at his last two starts and those runs have had a lot more merit than it may have looked,” she said. “Mark does a good job and his horses are always fit.” Collett is also booked to ride Skills (race one), Freewheeler (race two), Domaine (race seven) and Skylla (race nine) today. - NZME

A memorial service will be held for the late Ross Doherty in the Grey Way Lounge at Phar Lap racecourse, Timaru, at 2pm on Thursday. The southern jockey, who rode 93 winners on the flat and over jumps, passed away suddenly at the weekend. - NZME

Tramway on again Kris Lees is sticking to a proven formula with his classy New Zealand mare Lucia Valentina. The Broadmeadow trainer produced her for a first-up success last spring in the Gr.2 Tramway Stakes and she will again resume in the Randwick event on September 5. Lucia Valentina’s ultimate goal later this year is the Gr.1 Cox Plate. - NZME

Stars out to play Gust of Wind, Kermadec and Kirramosa will further their spring preparations at Randwick on Friday. The New Zealand-bred Group One winners will be among a host of star performers to step out at the trials. John Sargent’s Gust of Wind hasn’t raced since she won the Australian Oaks in the autumn while stablemate Kirramosa has been plagued by injury since she was victorious in the 2013 VRC Oaks. - NZME

YOUR STARS ARIES (MAR 21-APR 19): You may be down on certain aspects of your physical self today. Just know that beauty is not created part by part. The beauty is in all of your parts working together. TAURUS (APR 20-MAY 20): You pride yourself in remaining cool under pressure and calm in the face of adversity. But how you react to good news and augmented fortunes you’ll soon find out. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 21): You may feel that your efforts are neither focused nor persistent enough to make a difference. But it’s the fact that you’re making an effort at all that makes the biggest difference. CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 22): You are an expert at recognising people’s defenses, especially ones not so easily discerned, like being extremely friendly or tired, or the defense of being annoyingly picky. LEO (JUL 23-AUG 22): Categories and distinctions matter. Take care not to blur the line between your work and personal lives, as this will prove over time to be a mistake that adversely affects both areas of your life. VIRGO (AUG 23-SEP 22): Your resolve is strong. You’ll stay calm when others are losing it, partly because you don’t believe in overreacting and partly because the planets favour your emotional control. LIBRA (SEP 23-OCT 23): Humans are imperfect, that’s one of the best things about them. You and a friend will be bonded in your imperfections. Tonight, a surprise will keep a relationship getting too comfortable. SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 21): When you’re communicating at the top of your game, you begin every interaction, whether with a stranger or with your nearest and dearest, with a greeting. Your stellar luck of the day will owe to this nicety. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21): You’re not the most emotional or demonstrative person you know, but it will be appropriate to go in for the hug today. In fact, your hugs have healing power. CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 19): The beauty of an anonymous gift is that the one who receives it can enjoy the gift without feeling the obligation of reciprocation. Every so often, you give like this because it feeds your soul. It’s that time again. AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 18): You usually get along perfectly, but today there’s a rub instead of a groove. Consider that you may have misinterpreted the other person’s behaviour, and that is the real cause of the problem (not the behaviour itself). PISCES (FEB 19-MAR 20): It’s a laid-back, casual, easy-going day for the most part, but when it’s time to make an impression, don’t relax too much. The rule is that it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Juniors in the hunt for medals BY ERIN TASKER Ashburton karate exponents honed their skills under some expert eyes at the weekend as they prepare to take on the Commonwealth’s best. Five Ashburton youngsters will head to Delhi, India, in September for the Common-

wealth Karate Championships, and national coach Duane Monk spent last weekend in Ashburton helping them prepare for the big stage. Ashburton’s karate youngsters who will join the national team in India are Jessica Windhorst, 15, Taylah Burrowes, 11, Jenna Borthwick, 12, Rosie

Gray, 11, and Charlie Savage, 10. They spent Saturday training with others from around the region at a training session open to all, and on Sunday it was all about the South Island-based New Zealand team members, with others from Christchurch and Timaru joining in.

Ashburton JION Karate founder, and national assistant coach, Thorsten Windhorst has hopes of his young stars returning home from India with medals around their necks. “They are doing good at training, and we will have to see. “There will be a lot of good

competitors from the other Commonwealth countries, and I expect them to go out and do their best,” Windhorst said. “My hope is that we get one or maybe two medals, but I know it will be tricky.” The Commonwealth Championships will run from September 16-18.

Silver Ferns put on far more polished performance The Silver Ferns will feel much happier about boarding a plane to Sydney next week after a comprehensive 39-goal win over South Africa in last night’s final warm-up test ahead of the World Cup.

After a patchy showing against the South Africans in the opening test on Sunday, the Ferns had a long list of work-ons for their final outing and they appeared to have ticked off most of their targets, with coach

Johnson already thinking of 2016 P15

Waimarama Taumaunu testing several different combinations in each area of the court. After an unexpectedly tight opening half in their first meeting against South Africa on Sunday, the Ferns were more con-

sistently dominant last night, keeping the Proteas to less than nine goals every quarter, including just four goals in the final spell. Unhappy with the ease at which the South Africans were

able to deliver the ball into their shooting circle the other night, Taumaunu demanded improvement from her defensive unit. The Ferns responded with a much stronger effort last night. - NZME
