8.6% pay rise for district councillors BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Art gallery kicks off P14

At the same time as ratepayers in the Ashburton District will see an average of 6.5 per cent added to their rates bill, district councillors and Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay will be pocketing an 8.6 per cent pay rise. The Ashburton District Council has signalled in its long-term plan that residential rates will rise by up to 19 per

cent in some rural villages and while increases are more modest for many and will fall in some cases, the average increase will add around $120 to average residential rates. Mr McKay will cross the six figure threshold with his new salary, $100,200 (up from $95,450 this year). Deputy mayor Darryl Nelson and the three committee chairs Neil Brown, Stuart Wilson and Alan Totty will re-

ceive $30,728 ($27,979) while its eight rank and file councillors will move to $24,600 from $22,400. Elected member salaries are set by the Remuneration Authority using a formula that involves population and councillor responsibility.

Kylie happy with Jenner’s trademark bid Pop princess Kylie Minogue is adamant she is not bothered about Kylie Jenner trying to steal her crown as the world’s most famous Kylie by trademarking the name. The Australian singer has been widely known simply by her first name since shooting to fame in the late 1980s, and until the emergence of reality TV star Jenner there was no-one in showbiz who shared the moniker. Earlier this month, it emerged the US teenager has moved to officially protect her first name so nobody else can trade off it, sparking the anger of many Minogue fans on social networking websites, but the star is adamant she is not fazed by the move. She tells British magazine Event, “I’m not bothered. In fact, I love how upset about that my fans have got on my behalf.”

Rebel responds to age rumours Rebel Wilson says claims she lied about her name and age are just “tall poppy syndrome”. Australian website MummaMia claimed the Australian actress is 36, not 29 and her real name is Melanie Elisabeth Bownds. Now Wilson has addressed the rumours in a series of funny posts on Twitter claiming the story is just aimed at cutting her down. “OMG I’m actually a 100 year old mermaid formerly known as “CC Chalice” .... thanks shady Australian press for your tall poppy syndrome x. Okay but all jokes aside now ... my real name is Fat Patricia x.” MummaMia Editor Mia Freedman said the website considered publishing a story “for quite some time. We kind of let it go because we didn’t want to be seen to be attacking her. What changed is some comments that she started making recently that have been very negative towards women that are her age or older. Just very subtle barbs,” Freedman said. Freedman claims to have been offended when Wilson said she was rejected for the all-female cast of Ghostbusters because the filmmakers had decided on an “older group” including 35-year-old Rose Byrne and 41-yearold Kristen Wiig.

Bridges closed for shoot Daniel Craig and his Bond co-star Lea Seydoux took to the River Thames in London this week to shoot a dramatic highspeed helicopter chase for upcoming 007 movie Spectre. The location shoot drew huge crowds to the banks of the river between Vauxhall and Westminster to watch as cameras filmed the actors in a speedboat in front of the iconic headquarters of MI5. Several bridges in the UK capital, including Lambeth Bridge, were temporarily closed during filming, before Craig and Seydoux came ashore to watch their stunt doubles take part in the more daring part of the chase as the boat was pursued by a helicopter.

The English are famous for their love of gardens, but many homeowners are now paving over theirs, turning Britain “grey”, the Royal Horticultural Society warns. As more and more people opt to turn once luscious lawns in front of their houses into off-street parking, the problem is getting worse, with three million front gardens having been completely paved over since 2005. More than five million front gardens – one in three – now have no plants growing in them, while 4.5 million – one in four – are completely paved over, according to a new RHS report, “Greening Grey Britain”. The situation is particularly acute in London where half of all front gardens have been paved over, a 36 per cent increase in the past decade. The effect is not just cosmetic. Gardens soak up rain and help mitigate the risks of flooding, while vegetation helps cooling during heatwaves and also provides a home for birds and insects.

■ GYPSY DAY

Initiative aids teachers, pupils BY DAISY HUDSON

DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Mid Canterbury children are set to reap the benefits of a new initiative to support teachers during the tumultuous Gypsy Day period. Gypsy Day, which traditionally falls on June 1, marks the start of the new dairy season. The new season sees sharemilkers and workers shift to

start new contracts and farmers move stock on to winter grazing. For many children it means a fresh start at a new and unfamiliar school, while teachers have the unenviable task of tracking down pupil records and determining what level they are at. However Dairy NZ has come up with a new initiative that will ease the pressure on teachers

and, in turn, lead to better outcomes for relocated pupils. The industry body has announced it will fund one teacher release day for each new child enrolled at Mid Canterbury schools because of farm movement. That means teachers will be able to spend time outside of the classroom doing testing, finding records, and interview-

ing incoming children. The initiative was initially trialled in Southland, and this year marks the first time it has been launched outside of the region. SchoolKit owner Kylie Power, who is co-ordinating the initiative on behalf of Dairy NZ, said it would be rolled out across 22 schools in Mid Canterbury. “It just reduces some of that stress that teachers face because

The numbers are in, Countdown Ashburton has received a total of 618 pairs of spectacles, more than six times what they were expecting. Over the past month, the supermarket asked the people of Mid Canterbury to drop in their old glasses so they could be sent over to the Pacific Islands to give to people who need them. By the beginning of last week 30 pairs had been donated, but numbers skyrocketed over the past few days. Countdown’s health and safety committee chairwoman Janine McLean said the staff at the supermarket were just “blown away”. “We aimed for 100 pairs,” she said. The donated glasses came in all shapes, sizes, colours and strengths. “Some of them are funny, and there are some really cool kids’ ones,” she said. Some people went to a lot of effort, packing up the glasses and stipulating what lenses were best suited for driving and which were best for wearing during the day.

“The community have absolutely gobsmacked us,” she said. Ms McLean joked that her office had started to look like a second-hand shop. It won’t last for long though, later

this week the glasses will be shipped off to Christchurch and then delivered over to the Pacific Islands. She said the staff wanted the glasses to go to Vanuatu, which was devastated by a cy-

clone earlier this year. Unfortunately the Ashburton staff won’t be able to deliver the donations themselves but Ms McLean said it would have been a nice way to finish up the collection.

of children moving mid-year,” she said. Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said the initiative would help pupils make the best possible start at their new school. “Some of these children, not all, may change schools every year, because that’s the life of being involved in the dairy industry I suppose,” he said. “So it’s a great initiative.”

Councillors’ pay rise From P1 Next year (from July 1) the council will pay $419,912 to its elected members, half from its uniform annual charge and half from general rates. This year it has paid $386,566. The increase in elected member pay might appear significant in percentage terms, but in dollar terms it is not, council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said. The council has no say in the amount of money allocated by the Remuneration Authority for elected member pay, but as a group or individually councillors can make a private arrangement for the extra cash to be paid to a charity rather than themselves, Mr Dalziel said. “I haven’t heard of any group of councillors doing this, but individuals at some councils have.” Generally the donors were from city councils where pay rates were $90,000 a year plus, he said. Over the next three years rates are projected to rise accumulatively by more than 21 per cent. Rates increases are likely to peak in 2017/2018 at 11.1 per cent on the back of the introduction of wheelie bin kerbside recycling. Tomorrow councillors sign off on the Remuneration Authority’s pay determination, and it will then be up to individuals whether or not they donate their increase to charity.

■ RUAPUNA FARM AUCTION

In brief

Sale sets new market value BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A dryland property sold at auction yesterday set a new market value in Mid Canterbury and demonstrates confidence in the future of farming, a rural real estate professional says. Sold on behalf of John Grant, the 160-hectare farm in the Ruapuna district was knocked down to John Tavendale for $4.890 million at the

Hotel Ashburton – equating to about $30,490 a hectare. PGG Wrightson Real Estate Mid Canterbury sales manager Robin Ford understood the property had been purchased on behalf of another party. Despite the low dairy payout, and dry summer interest prior to the sale had been strong. In a packed gallery five live bidders quickly drove the price up from the opening bid of $4 million, in initial increments of

$100,000 with encouragement from auctioneer Athol Earl. At the $4.650 million mark bidding slowed, tapering off to $10,000 increments, before stalling at $4.870. Mr Earl halted proceedings to discuss the offer with the vendor. His decision to sell sparked new interest, pushing the price up a further $20,000. “This farm is one of the first of its size to be offered for a

number of years, it is an ideal size and shape and it’s set a new market value for Mid Canterbury,” Mr Ford said. “By the sound of the bidding today people still have confidence, and farming still has a bright future.” Currently used for dairy grazing, the Croskeries Road property has free-draining Ruapuna silt loam soils, a good annual rainfall and numerous outbuildings.

Relay for Life participants need to take a bow, say its organisers. Organising committee chairperson Alison Driscoll announced yesterday $165,000 had been raised for the Canterbury West Coast Cancer Society. Mrs Driscoll said the many who attended, represented in teams from a wide range of businesses, organisations, schools and families, had really got into the spirit of the event. “We just can’t thank the community enough for the effort put into the event.” The money raised would go towards the local branch’s operating costs.

Casting auditions Methven Theatre Company will hold auditions for its latest production, A Law Unto Themselves, next month. Chairman Wayne Pannett is hoping people who have never acted before will be among those to fill the play’s 15 roles. “This year’s play contains small parts perfect for those stepping up on stage for the first time,” Mr Pannett said. A Law unto Themselves will be directed by Georgie Sivier and stage in August. It is a farcical New Zealand comedy based on a small town law firm where the lawyers are either incompetent, devious or distracted, and legal executives step in to save the firm from disaster. Auditions will be on June 3 and 4 at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall at 7pm. Those interested can contact Mr Pannett on 027 813 8016.

Five Chertsey School children are giving up two of their favourite things – talking and eating – this weekend, all in the name of raising awareness Tilly O’Shaughnessy, 10, her sister Eilish O’Shaughnessy and their classmate Rhiannan Choat, 7, are banding together in efforts to not to speak this weekend. The three are zipping their lips in aid of the 40 Hour Famine. All the money raised for this year’s famine will go towards establishing emergency feeding programmes, teaching families how to grow veggies and improving access to health and nutrition services in Bangladesh. Tilly, Eilish and Rhiannan will give up the gab for 20 hours this weekend. The three girls agreed that it might be tough, but they were looking forward to it. Tilly and Eilish’s mother Yvette thinks the girls will do well, and is looking forward to having a somewhat quieter house. “I think it will be interesting, I always take the girls swimming on a Saturday so we will

have to see how that goes,” she said. “They’ll last though, they’re stubborn.” So far the girls have raised around $90 from those who are sponsoring their efforts. Mrs O’Shaughnessy said she

thinks the girls were alerted to the famine partially through Liliane, a 12-year-old child in Rwanda that the family sponsors. Classmates, Leilani Fifita, 9 and Jacob Wilson, 9, will also be giving up one of their fa-

vourite things too – not talking – but food. The two will eat nothing but rice and drink nothing but water for 20 hours over the weekend. “I just wanted to do it because I felt bad for [those] over in Bangladesh,” Leilani said.

Individuals and community groups keen to improve their environment could receive a financial boost from the Ashburton District Council’s biodiversity fund. Grant applications open today for a share of the $15,000 pool the council makes available each year. The money can be used to carry out a project that helps protect, restore or enhance biodiversity in the district. The biodiversity grants were established in 2013 and assisted a number of community biodiversity projects. $5000 is the maximum the council will provide per grant. The applicant’s share of the project cost can be financial or in kind. Applications for the fund can be made until June 18.

Making a name in the art circles Master of fine arts graduate Rachel Ratten is fast making a name for herself in art circles. The award-winning artist’s latest exhibition were exhibited at Geraldine’s McAtamney Gallery. These works were created for her Master’s degree. The foundation for her full-time career has its roots at Aoraki Polytechnic, where Rachel first studied art in a classroom environment. Rachel had painted for 10 years before enrolling at Aoraki when she moved from the North Island in 2006. She spent three years studying towards her Diploma in Painting Level 5 and Level 6 at Aoraki. “While I was selling work, I wanted my paintings to have more academic rigor, but being self-taught, this was a skill-set I was sadly lacking in.’’ At Aoraki, she also taught painting and printmaking to Level 4 students in 2009 and 2010.

“This was my first foray into tutoring and gave me the confidence to mentor people and I now take private students occasionally. Having been a student at the same institution meant that the surroundings and staff were familiar, meaning the whole thing was more of a gentle transition. “My undergrad was done extramurally through Massey, so I never experienced the whole ‘student camaraderie’ one gets at tertiary institutions. Aoraki totally fulfilled this for me, as both staff and students made me feel incredibly welcome. “Moving from out of town I didn’t know anyone, so this environment was a fantastic getaway for meeting fellow artists, many I now consider friends. Aoraki was a lifesaver in that regard.’’ After her time at Aoraki, Rachel was accepted to Ilam Art School for post-graduate studies. Rachel has an undergraduate degree in Sociology, and this is an area she incorporates into her art.

■ MID CANTERBURY EDUCATION LEVELS

Increase ‘a positive sign’ BY DAISY HUDSON

DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Rising education levels in Mid Canterbury have been lauded as a positive sign for the local economy. Newly released data from the 2013 Census shows a significant increase in the number of people who have gained qualifications since 2006. The biggest increase came in the number of people gaining Level 3 NCEA at school, which rose by a staggering 101 per

cent from 672 to 1356. The number of people gaining a bachelor degree rose by 63 per cent, while 66 per cent more people gained their masters qualification. Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley said the increases were exciting for the Ashburton district. “It’s great for our district, because the more highly educated our workforce is, the better able it is to cope with changes and progress that happens,”

he said. “The more productive it is, the more successful our businesses are really, it’s that simple.” He said the increases were clearly outstripping the district’s population growth, which sits at about 13 per cent. The 2013 Census also recorded a 60 per cent increase in the number of people with doctorate degrees in the Ashburton District. Mr Brawley said a range of organisations and local educa-

tion providers had put a lot of effort into increasing education opportunities in the district in recent years, particularly around primary industry training. “There’s been a lot of work going on by a lot of people behind the scenes, so it’s really pleasing to see the stats supporting that,” he said. That work included the introduction of automotive, agribusiness, and retail courses. “Overall the whole thing’s positive,” he said.

New Hinds fire station long overdue BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The Hinds Volunteer Rural Fire Force (VRFF) has grown out of its fire station, and plans are afoot for a new building. Members plan to move across the road from the force’s current location to a site on Ashburton District Council-owned land at the Hinds Domain, and construct a new shed, expected to cost more than $200,000. Chief Dave Kingsbury said the shift can not come soon enough. The force has one rural appliance and one tanker, the latter of which barely fits into the current shed, constructed in the 1980s. A wall alongside the tanker bay has scrape marks and a hole, testimony to the tight manoeuvring firefighters need to attempt every time they park it away. Even a refrigerator behind the tanker bay has dents in it. Getting into the tanker is a tight squeeze as the door can only open so far, and a changing area where uniforms hang alongside the rural appliance is not wide enough. The latter can present a safety risk for

The Rakaia History Group had 300 copies printed, and is currently ordering a reprint of 100 copies, to make sure people do not miss out. Group chairperson Eddie Oakley said the book had been muchanticipated, and it was good to see it had been so popular. “I think it’s such a comprehensive document of Rakaia and the surrounding districts,” Mr Oakley said. The 716 page A4-sized tome was written by Janine Irvine of Time of Your Life with help from group members.

firefighters changing as the appliance pulls out. Mr Kingsbury said he could not wait to see Hinds get the fire station it deserved. It would be an 18 by 12 metre building, complete with meeting room, kitchen, communications room and bathroom. The force has so far this 2014/2015 year had 61 call-

outs, compared to 66 last year and 63 the year before. It carries a defibrillator and responds to medial assist calls, alongside motor vehicle accidents, vegetation fires and structure fires. “It’s 20 odd minutes for Ashburton to get out here, and there’s a lot of damage can be done in 20 minutes,” Mr

Kingsbury said. Plans for the new shed were currently being finalised. The Hinds Domain board had approved the site and the council was to apply for building consent on the force’s behalf. The shed would be funded by the council and VRFF, with fundraising accounting for the shortfall.

Online chatter about whether the Hakatere Marae clinic was still up and running has been silenced by resident GP Charlotte Cox, who earlier this week confirmed it was indeed still running, and faring well. “It has been going well providing an alternative, accessible service for those seeking a doctor,” she said. The clinic runs every Wednesday morning at Hakatere Marae from 9am until 11am. It has been proving popular as Dr Cox said earlier this month she saw 10 patients in the two hour period.

Water funding on wishlist

Educators hopeful

Government assistance in funding water storage projects, is on the budget wishlist for a Mid Canterbury and Federated Farmers spokesperson. Ian Mackenzie is the federation’s national grain and seed chairman. He thinks the environmental, social and economic benefits that reliable water brings merits public investment. “In a country whose economy looks like it’s stagnating, we need to look at how we can genuinely drive growth rather just sit back and wait for it to happen,” he said.

“There are continual impediments put in the path of people making progress. “The Hawke’s Bay economy will now stagnate because there are too many impediments in the way for the (Ruataniwha) dam to go ahead, and that decision is likely to impact on various project in Canterbury and Otago. “I’m not sure if it’s a budgetary issue, but the government needs to clarify the purpose and intent of the National Policy Statement for Fresh Water (NPS).

“Points of law around the NPS have stalled the Ruataniwha, and they need to free up capital to help fund these projects. “At the moment capital is available to borrow to fund these projects, but I think there is a good case for Government to fund a share of the project, because of the wider benefits that accrue to the public from some of these projects going ahead, rather than trying push it all onto the immediate beneficiaries. “If you look at the Opuha dam

as an example, it ran out of water for irrigation because it put so much water down the river to keep it alive. If there had been no dam the river would have been dry for about six months, with no natural water coming in. “There is an environmental and recreational benefit to the Opuha dam, as well as economical. “The general public get all that for free – I think it’s time the government recognised that you can’t put all those costs onto private developers.”

Competition hat-trick for local Cadet Unit By Caitlin Porter

Members from the Ashburton Cadet Unit have taken out the top spot once again and were crowned winners at the Exercise Top Squad competition for the third time in a row last weekend. Cadets from all over the Canterbury area flocked to the Staveley Camp Ground on Friday night, ready for a full weekend of activities. The competition is held every year, and has been running since 2010. Ashburton Cadet Unit Major Cezarne Rodgers said three teams from the Ashburton unit entered this year. “They put in teams of eight [with people] ranked sergeant or below,” she said. In total there were seven teams from around the wider Canterbury area, who took part in a series of Gallipoli themed events including ‘grenade’ throwing, leadership and first aid tasks, a fitness test and a stretcher carry. “They had no idea what to expect until they got there,”

Funding for special education and professional development are topping educators’ wishlists heading into this year’s Budget. When Finance Minister Bill English announces Budget 2015 tomorrow, Mid Canterbury principals would like to see the sector receive a funding boost in several areas. However, they aren’t getting their hopes up. Mount Somers Springburn School principal Brent Gray has called for more special education funding for schools, saying current funding is “just a joke”. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy also believed more special education funding was needed. However he believed the millions of dollars invested in the government’s flagship education scheme, Investing in Educational Success, would be the last funding boost the sector would see “for a while”. “I don’t think it will be new money,” he said. “There’s been nothing forecast, usually we would hear something on the wind if there was going to be new money or something exciting happening.” Mr English has remained tight-lipped over the bulk of the budget’s contents, although some tidbits have been released in the lead up to the big announcement. That included the announcement of a $244 million cash injection to the sector, which will be used to fund the building of several new schools and hundreds of new classrooms around the country. ■ MID CANTERBURY NEWCOMERS NETWORK

Scottish theme to first meeting By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

Newcomers to Mid Canterbury are being urged to throw on their dancing shoes and head along to the Ashburton RSA this Friday for the year’s first Settling In meeting. Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network co-ordinator Louise Glennon is a newcomer to Mid Canterbury herself, moving here earlier this year from her home country of Scotland. As a result, this month’s meeting is Scottish themed. Mrs Glennon said she and her husband will welcome people to the meeting, before chatting to the group about Scotland. A presentation has also been prepared, as Mrs Glennon said she plans on making the evening as interactive as possible. An instructor from the Scottish Country Dancing group will also make an appearance, teaching a Scottish jig to anyone wanting to learn. Mrs Glennon said she is keen to join in on the festivities. “I have done a bit of ceilidh (pronounced kee-ly) dancing in my time,” she joked. She will also whip up a few traditional Scottish goodies for people to munch on. Scones, shortbread, tablet (confectionery) and even a shepherd’s pie will be on offer.

While she admitted she is nervous to host her first meeting, she is also excited. From now on Mrs Glennon said she plans to hold the meetings on the last Friday of every month. Other than planning the meeting as well as other various catch-ups, Mrs Glennon managed to fit in time to fly to Wellington for a national newcomers’ conference earlier this month. “It was really interesting and a great opportunity to meet with all the other co-ordinators,” she said. The Settling In meeting will take place this Friday, May 22 from 7pm until 9pm at the Doris Linton Lounge at the Ashburton RSA. Friends and family of newcomers to the Mid Canterbury district are welcome.

Merging nature with landscape Nature’s “own artistic creations” combine with features of Ashburton’s urban landscape in this card design by Zoe Sturm. The Mid Canterbury student was one of 10 winners of a Discover Art in Ashburton card design competition held by the Ashburton Art Gallery. The limited edition cards will be available for purchase in the retail space of the gallery when it opens on Saturday.

Miss Sturm said she wanted to show in her drawing that “art is all around us”. “From our multi-cultural society to the man-made and architectural design of the war memorial and clock tower to nature’s own artistic creations like trees and mountains.” Her fellow winners were Hazel Anne De Paz, Lee Muckle, Robin Arnst, Bertie Holmes, Ngaio McKee, Jack Ross, Sandra Dryland, Izacc Carr and Alex Carr.

OUR VIEW

Vandalism is a grave issue Stu Oldham

EDITOR

M

any of us were sickened at the sight of dozens of damaged children’s graves, toppled and torn by a vandal with no social conscience. It was an appalling act that caused new grief and anger among the affected families and many others who know what it is to lose a child. It happened in Auckland, but it made the blood boil in Mid Canterbury, where too many also know what it is like to be the victim of vandalism crime. It is mercifully rare here, but there have been recent instances of local people arriving at family graves to find flowers stolen and ornaments missing. Some have written letters to the editor, others have appeared in news stories and all said they were shaken by an intrusion on their grief. There is little chance these often small-scale, hurtful, incidents will stop in the wake of a high-profile, dreadful act in the North Island. But what happened has refocused attention on the impact vandalism has on real people in the real communities in which these vandals live. This column has bangedon before about the tagging, tree-snapping and sign-cutting that has blighted far too many streets in Mid Canterbury. With the people most affected and the local council, it has urged people to keep an eye on their streets and to report their suspicions to the police. Sadly, over many months, there have been no clear indications from local police that vandalism is being reported or that vandals are being caught. Perhaps this is low-grade crime which, in the minds of many, should take a back seat when there are plenty more serious incidents that require urgent attention. This is fair; but it is also unfair that so many fences are tagged and so many people with their own worries are left with a mess and a sense of victimisation. In Auckland, it was reported that the vandal was passed by many cars, but no-one called the police. This cannot be the experience in Mid Canterbury.

YOUR VIEW Ideas flagged I’m berating myself for not remembering to pop into the “for/not for the flag” caravan on the checker board, in town on Monday. I can’t believe that we would contemplate changing the flag, least of which the exorbitant price of doing so. Mr Bartlett was quite right; Maori and non-Maori won’t agree, and as for the silver fern on the flag, this has been our sporting shirts’ emblems, not pride of Olympic and Commonwealth flag bearers, and least of all, the now and previous military/air forces. I am proudly New Zealand born and bred, but what an absurd amount of money to throw to the wind, when many other more pressing issues need to be addressed in our country. This seems a futile exercise

CRUMB

at a high price. Also to the local council I question how they could not have foreseen that the parking for the new EA Network Centre was inadequate. I guess they should have consulted the New World and Countdown supermarkets, as (sorry if I’m wrong), I thought all these were governed by permits regarding user numbers? Maybe a parking area off Smallbone Drive with a turnstile walk through may help as a suggestion. And lastly, I am again surprised that we have to put in submissions for the hydroslide. I, like many I’m sure, filled out a form with our appropriate responses. How many times must we tread water over the same issues? And the cost factors can’t be ignored; feels like a case of deja vu. I am writing this letter to thank the people involved with my daughter’s hit-and-run accident on Saturday night. The three people that stayed by her side, thank you for your kindness and caring attitude. To the shopkeeper of La Wheat we appreciate your kind and caring attitude. Thank you so much to you all; it could have been such a tragedy but it wasn’t. She was very lucky not to have been killed after being thrown by that milk tanker. Thank you too, to the ambulance drivers involved; you two ladies were so wonderful. And last but not least, thank you to the police officers who came out. She is coping okay, just bruised and sore but alive! She is amazing. Thank you again. Mary and Amy Hawthorne

On behalf of the Ashburton Car Club I would like to thank our major sponsor Autosparks and other sponsors who supported us ... throughout the weekend, without these people the event (Autosparks 26th Anniversary Street Sprints) would not have been so successful. We also have a huge thank you to all the businesses in the Riverside Industrial Area, with some closing their businesses for us to run. Without their support we wouldn’t have been able to have such a successful weekend of motorsport. Also to all the competitors, helpers, fundraising groups, club members and families that gave up their time to help bring this weekend together. A huge thank you to you all. s part of my role as mayor, I have been privileged to see firsthand the amazing work non-government organisations do for the people in the community. Many of these organisations rely upon the dedication and hard work of its volunteers, and I’d like to take this time to acknowledge those people who give their time to helping others. It’s often an overlooked position in our society and yet an essential function that we all need to recognise, for its importance in the Ashburton District. The mayor also holds the position of president for Age Concern, the predominant non-government organisation that works to meet the needs of our community’s more senior people. Performing this function I have gained a lot of insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes. I would like to share with you some of what I have learned over the past few years about what Age Concern Ashburton does. Many of our senior citizens live alone and Age Concern has been running a special programme called 206 Club. This programme has about 37 volunteers that work with older people to reduce the social isolation they may experience. Each one of these

volunteers gives 15 hours of their time per week, to work with the 85 clients enrolled in 206 Club. There are an additional 34 volunteers also working with Age Concern helping to run safe-driving workshops, being courtesy drivers, hosting women’s exercise classes and offering the 50s Plus educational programmes. These valuable programmes could not run without the good will of these unsung heroes. A big focus right now is helping our older people to feel safe and promoting independence. This is through the Steady As You Go falls preven-

tion programme. By combining physical activity with social interaction in peer-led classes, Steady as You Go aims to improve muscle strength, balance, increases fitness and flexibility, and promotes a feeling of well-being. Most importantly, it is shown to be effective in increasing confidence and mobility of older people, to reduce the likelihood of falls in their homes. As falls are the most common and costliest injury for older people, this programme has the approval of doctors and physiotherapists throughout Ashburton.

At only $2 per session, this is a true value-for-money initiative that is open to anyone living in the district. Age Concern is one of the many agencies helping people throughout the wider Ashburton community. Remember all of these agencies rely upon their volunteers, and I encourage those of you with some spare time to seriously consider giving volunteering a go. Those who do will tell you how rewarding it is to give back to the community. Angus McKay is Mayor of Ashburton

■ INDONESIA

Lethal carnage on boat Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants on board a foundering vessel off Indonesia fought with axes, knives and metal bars in vicious clashes that left at least 100 dead, survivors say. Both groups described bloody, nightmarish scenes after the overcrowded vessel was abandoned by its crew last week, with desperate migrants “slaughtering” each other in fierce battles over dwindling supplies. Exhausted survivors, many bearing bruises and cuts, told AFP from camps in Aceh province they believed between 100 and 200 people were killed in the fighting that erupted on Thursday on the boat, which was carrying hundreds of migrants. They are among nearly 3000 Rohingya and Bangladeshis who have come ashore in the past week in Southeast Asia, after a Thai crackdown disrupted long-established human-trafficking routes. While many were hacked to death on board, others jumped from the ship as they sought to escape the carnage, and those that survived were rescued by local fishermen and brought to shore. Both sides blamed the other for starting the fighting. “Suddenly the Bangladeshis came out of the deck, and they attacked all of us who were on the top of the boat,” said Rohingya migrant Asina Begun, 22, speaking from Langsa, an Aceh town where most of the migrants were taken. “Those who wanted to save their lives had to jump in the sea, but my brother could not. When they found him, they beat him and then they slaughtered him. “After that they threw him into the sea.” However, the Bangladeshis

A new innovation uses a biometric scan of the owner’s ear or parts of the hand to unlock a smartphone without the need for an expensive fingerprint sensor. Yahoo Labs’ Bodyprint utilises the device’s existing touchscreen and so doesn’t need an extra fingerprint sensor as found in the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6. The images taken by the touch-screen are of lower resolution, but still work effectively, Yahoo Labs said. As well as ears, the systems works with fists, knuckles, fingers and palms and creates a low-resolution image unique to each user. - DPA

said the Rohingya, a Muslim minority fleeing persecution in Myanmar, had been favoured by the boat captain, who only spoke a Myanmar language and gave them all the food and water. They said they were attacked after begging the Rohingya for supplies. Mohammad Murad Hussein, a Bangladeshi, told how the Rohingya were on the top deck of the boat and the Bangladeshis, who made up the bulk of passengers, were on a lower deck. As fighting erupted, the Rohingya sought to stop the Bangladeshis coming onto the upper deck by attacking them with axes and spraying water at them that was laced with pepper, he said. “From the upper deck they were spraying hot water, pep-

per water at us, anyone who went up was hacked at with a cleaver,” said the 30-year-old, whose body was covered with many scars. “In the end we realised we would die. Then we decided to fight them and bring them down with us.” The boat started leaking and sinking as the violence escalated, at which point many people started jumping into the water, he said. However, Rohingya refugee Mohammad Amih said the Bangladeshis attacked the Rohingya, after they insisted the remaining water on board should be saved for the children. Amih said that he had told the Bangladeshis: “We should keep it for the children because they cannot survive without water.”

As the Bangladeshis - most of whom are seeking to escape from grinding poverty back home - came on to them, Amih said that he tried to hide among the women on board but was soon discovered. “They hit me on the head and then threw me overboard. After that I swam towards the local fishermen’s boats,” he said. As the migrants recovered from the ordeal, their thoughts turned to their families back home. Many have been out of contact with their loved ones for two months, since embarking on the sea voyage. “We cannot call our families back home. They probably think we are all dead,” said Bangladeshi migrant Mohammad Meshar Ali. - AFP

Town ‘wiped off map’ in deadly landslide A massive landslide tore through a ravine in northwest Colombia before dawn yesterday, killing at least 61 people and injuring 37. Most residents were sleeping when the landslide hit the municipality of Salgar around 3am burying a large area in mud and debris. The rush of mud and water “tore down everything in its path”, Salgar Mayor Olga Osorio told RCN Radio. The small town of Santa

Margarita was practically “wiped off the map”, she said. The rescue operation, which was being carried out by 166 first responders, was suspended overnight and was to resume again early in the morning. Aerial images showed a broad river of mud that had inundated a large area, dragging houses and trees along with it. Residents shovelled out piles of mud in the afternoon, try-

ing to salvage what belongings they could, as dump trucks arrived to begin hauling away the mess. Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos flew over the affected area and met with local officials. Several children were orphaned and are now being cared for by the Colombian Institute for Family Wellbeing, he said. He announced that each family affected - more than

30 in all - would receive $US7000, and promised infrastructure improvements to try to prevent such disasters in the future. The area had been hit by several days of heavy rain. Colombia’s tropical climate and mountainous landscapes make it prone to landslides. In 2010-2011, heavy rains caused flooding and landslides that killed 1374 people and destroyed more than 100,000 homes. - AFP

Manager sacked while attending birth of child

P

aul Moses was dismissed from his job as depot manager at Orora Packaging New Zealand Limited’s Whakatu packaging plant on February 5, 2014. The packaging plant manager was awarded more than $15,000 after he was sacked for never returning from a trip to Australia to attend the birth of his fourth child. Mr Moses had been granted 22 days’ annual leave over the Christmas New Year break which was a busy time of year for the business. The leave was granted on the basis of the information Mr Moses had given regarding the expected date of birth of his child. He told his boss his wife was due in mid-January, but she had always given birth four weeks early. The inference Orora drew was that Mr Moses anticipated the baby would be born in the first half of December 2013.

EMPLOYMENT MATTERS

However, Mrs Moses’ maternity record gave the expected date of delivery as February 6. Employment Relations Authority member Trish MacKinnon found it difficult to avoid the conclusion that Mr Moses deliberately misled Orora about the date his new baby was due. “The company clearly had suspicions about his truthfulness regarding the expected date of birth of his daughter,” she said. Orora put Mr Moses on notice that it wished to address issues relating to his absence and lack of communication when he returned to work. However, Orora’s intention to initiate a serious misconduct

meeting was not held. Instead Orora notified him of the termination of his employment before the meeting thereby denying Mr Moses the opportunity to respond to its concerns and to explain his actions. Ms MacKinnon awarded compensation and three months’ lost wages to Mr Moses. However, she found that Mr Moses contributed to the situation by giving his boss inaccurate information around the due date of his wife. She assessed Mr Moses’ contribution at 40 per cent and reduced his compensation and lost income accordingly. Orora was ordered to pay Mr Moses $10,825.51 for lost income and $4500 for compensation. reference to the prospect of higher rates, in the wake of the inflation data. Prices received by sheep, beef cattle and grain farmers dropped 11 per cent in the first quarter, reflecting drought in some regions and higher rates of slaughter. Prices received by dairy farmers dropped 4.6 per cent, as the farm-gate milk price fell further. Farmers’ input costs, measured by the farm expenses price index, declined 0.5 per cent, mainly on lower fuel prices. Prices paid by meat manufacturers fell 8.8 per cent on lower prices for sheep and lamb, while prices they received fell 2.4 per cent on lower prices for beef and sheep meat exports. Prices paid by dairy product manufacturers fell 3.3 per cent on the decline in the farm-gate milk price, while prices they received dropped 5.2 per cent on lower export prices for milk powder. – NZME

ment to the NZX after details were reported by the NZ Herald, which cited Simone Robbers, the regulator’s director of primary markets and investor resources, as saying the public didn’t understand what the title Registered Financial Adviser (RFA) meant. “The RFA is not a qualification,” Robbers was quoted as saying. “It is a registration. It is not a level of professionalism or a suggestion they have a minimum qualification.” Revelations that the FSPR is being abused come after the government moved to crack down on New Zealand registered shell companies, with a law change requiring them to have a local director and details including the ultimate owner. That follows reports in 2010 that a locally registered company, SP Trading, leased a plane to smuggle arms to Iran from North Korea. The plane was intercepted in Thailand. – NZME

Producer input and output prices fell in the first quarter, mainly reflecting lower fuel costs and weakness in prices of meat and dairy products. Prices received by producers, or the output producer price index, fell 0.9 per cent in the first three months of the year, for an annual decline of 2.5 per cent, according to Statistics New Zealand. Prices paid by producers, or input PPI, fell 1.1 per cent in the quarter for an annual decline of 4 per cent. The PPI figures confirm other data that shows inflation pressures were weak in the first quarter, with the exception of the construction industry, the government statistician said. Falling petrol and diesel prices were the main contributor to a 0.3 per cent decline in the consumer price index in the first quarter, that resulted in an annual inflation rate of just 0.1 per cent. The Reserve Bank moved to a tacit easing bias, dropping

The Financial Markets Authority says it is looking into New Zealanders who help foreign firms sign up on a local register of financial services providers and even act as directors, giving the entities a veneer of respectability they can cash in on overseas. The regulator said it has removed 23 entities from the Financial Services Provider Register so far this year and prevented a further 20 from completing registration on the FSPR. The register is maintained by the Registrar of Companies, but the FMA has the power to direct the registrar to remove companies “where it is likely that a company is giving a false or misleading impression about the extent to which it is regulated in New Zealand,” the FMA said. The entities register in New Zealand to take advantage of the nation’s reputation for be-

ing well regulated. The FMA said it has received complaints from overseas investors who have lost money in forex companies and other service providers operating abroad with FSPR registration. “We are aware of instances where the FSPR is not being used for its intended purpose,” said FMA general counsel Liam Mason. “This is taking advantage of New Zealand’s good reputation for being a well-regulated jurisdiction and a good place to do business.” The regulator said it was concerned that local agents were helping such entities register, providing local registered office facilities and putting themselves up as a director. “The FMA will look closely at the ability of such directors to carry out their duties under the Companies Act, especially where multiple directorships are involved,” it said. The FMA issued the state-

Get your fill of feijoa

I

f you have a feijoa tree in your backyard, you’ll be picking up dozens of the fragrant tasty fruit every day. It seems to have been a good season for feijoaS with bags of the fruit doing a great trade over back fences and in workplaces. When you’ve eaten your fill of the fruit scooped from the skin, there are plenty of ways feijoaS can be turned into cakes, chutneys, salsas and as part of savoury dishes too.

Pumpkin and feijoa with lamb 400g pumpkin, peeled and sliced 1 drizzle olive oil 8 feijoas 2 bay leaves 1 red chilli finely diced 4 garlic cloves, sliced into 16 pieces 12 lamb cutlets ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Drizzle the pumpkin with olive oil and season. Arrange in a baking dish and cook for 15 minutes. ■ Peel the feijoas and halve. ■ Add to the pumpkin with the bay leaves and chilli and continue to cook for a further 15 minutes or until both the pumpkin and the feijoas are soft and caramelised. ■ Tu r n the

oven up to 220°C. ■ Make four small but deep incisions into each cutlet with the point of a sharp knife. ■ Insert a piece of garlic into each incision. ■ Season each cutlet well. ■ Brush with olive oil and bake in the oven or grill on the barbecue for three minutes on each side – depending on the size of the cutlets. ■ Serve the lamb with the feijoas and the pumpkin.

Pork and feijoa 1 medium onion, sliced 2T canola oil 4T flour 4t curry powder 500g pork, lean diced pork 4 large feijoas, peeled and sliced 3/4 C orange juice

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Heat the oil in a heavy frying pan and brown the onion. Place in a casserole dish. ■ Place the flour, curry powder, salt and pepper in a plastic bag. ■ Add the pork and shake to coat. ■ Press the dry mixture into the pork well. ■ Brown the meat in the remaining oil. ■ Add to the casserole with the feijoas and orange juice. ■ Cover and cook in the oven for 1 1/2 hours. ■ Great served with baked kumara.

Quick and easy feijoa chutney 1kg feijoas 500g onions 2C sugar 3C cider vinegar 1T curry powder 1T ground ginger 1t chilli powder 1t cloves ■ Trim and chop unpeeled feijoas, then combine with onions in a large saucepan. ■ Add the remaining ingredients. ■Stir well while bringing to the boil. ■Simmer on low heat until thickened – about one hour. ■ Spoon into hot sterilised jars. Seal when cold.

Feijoa and chilli salsa 3 feijoas 1 red onion, finely chopped 1T brown sugar 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper 1 diced red chilli 2T chopped coriander ■ Chop the feijoas and onion into small pieces and mix together with the sugar and pepper. ■ Add coriander and chilli.

Feijoa and date cake 100g butter, softened 3/4 C sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 C flour 1t baking powder 1t baking soda 1C dates, chopped 3/4 C feijoas, mashed 2T milk ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease an 18cm square tin. Line the base with baking paper. ■ Beat together butter and sugar until light and creamy. Beat in egg. ■ Sift together flour, baking powder and baking soda. Fold into creamed mixture. ■ Stir in dates, feijoas and milk. ■ Spoon mixture into prepared tin. ■ Bake for 45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. ■ Leave cake in tin for 10 minutes before turning on to a wire rack to cool. ■ When cool, ice with lemon icing and garnish with lemon zest.

■ ART GALLERY

Kicking off public schedule The Ashburton Art Gallery will launch back into its public programme schedule following its official opening on Saturday. New Zealand tape artists Struan Ashby and Erica Duthie will kick if off on Sunday by talking about their temporary creative form of tape art. The pair co-create to transform urban spaces, using a simple roll of blue masking tape as their medium and the world as their canvas. They will discuss their work at 11am in the gallery’s learning centre. The first Jub Jub Club session in the gallery will be held the following Sunday at 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Club members, aged seven to 13, will then meet every second week to extend and grow their knowledge and appreciation for art. The first session will see members create a large-scale work inspired by Philip Trusttum’s on-site exhibition, Current Affairs.

A new addition will be a weekly after-school art space for children called Art Addicts. Participants will be able to wrap up their Wednesday school day and

head to the gallery to get creative and explore themes in art from 3pm to 5pm. “This is a great space for children to interact and learn from

each other in a safe and facilitated environment. Children of all ages are welcome,” gallery communications officer Nicole Bourke said.

Mrs Castelow said the latest version of Grease performed by Variety had required work with regard to scoring, and it had enabled the development of a “bigger sound with bigger impact”, and more harmony. She said the band just about had its own village underneath the stage but may not be seen by audience members. However, the team did not feel neglected. “If it (the music) is good, it just sort of blends in, and everyone says ‘wasn’t it a lovely show’.”

In brief

■ XTERRA

Currie makes it a hat-trick Braden Currie began his United States campaign winning the XTERRA Southeast Championship, which doubled as the USA Triathlon Off-Road National Championship race. Currie fought off a late challenge from 10-time XTERRA USA National Champion, American Josiah Middaugh, to claim victory at the Oak Mountain State Park course in Alabama. Currie was thrilled to hold on for the win in what is his first of four US-based XTERRA races this season. “I was super stoked as it was good tough event and I had to fight to the end and only managed to take it out in the last 100m,” Currie said He finished winning by a narrow three seconds over defending champion Middaugh, with fellow American Chris Ganter a distant third, finishing more than six minutes back. Currie began the race exiting the 1.5km lake swim in fifth place and quickly made

up some ground on the 30km mountain bike. He rode most of the “techy, hilly, grunty” course with Evans, and Middaugh caught them both near the end of the ride. Middaugh and Currie then raced head to head for nearly the whole 10km trail run before the Kiwi seized his chance and

with a burst of speed passed his rival to collect the win. “It was a great mental boost for me to be able to take the win as I still feel like I have plenty left in the tank for my up-coming US races and building up to the XTERRA World Championships near the end of the year.” The 28-year-old seems un-

stoppable right now and with his new strategic approach, which offers him several solid training blocks instead of nonstop racing, it’s likely that he will only get faster. It was his third victory in a row, after he dominated the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championships and the New Zealand XTERRA championships last month, plus won the Coast to Coast for the third consecutive time in February. Currie could be the one to beat the more than 10-race winning streak of the current world champion Ruben Ruzafa when the pair meet again at the World XTERRA Championships in Hawaii in October. “My buildup was as good as I could have hoped for, but I feel like I’ve got a lot to improve on, with a good four-week block coming up.” Currie will now be based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he will put in some solid training before his next race, the USA Northwest Xterra Championship next month.

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Maroons sweating on Cherry-Evans’ fitness Newly re-signed Queensland coach Mal Meninga admits it’s unclear whether Daly CherryEvans will be fit for next week’s rugby league State of Origin opener in Sydney. Cherry-Evans was named as the utility bench player but was a notable absentee when the Maroons team was paraded in Brisbane yesterday. The Manly playmaker is believed to be nursing a shoulder complaint from Monday night’s NRL clash with Penrith. Meninga said Cherry-Evans missed the team announcement because he underwent scans on his injury in Sydney. He hinted at a decision being made about Cherry-Evans’s availability for the May 27 match against NSW at ANZ Stadium once he was assessed again by Maroons medical staff. “We are still waiting on results from a scan in Sydney,” Meninga said.

“He’s heading up but we will know more when he arrives here this afternoon and make some judgements later on.” Cowboys pivot Michael Morgan had been expected to fly into Maroons camp as back-up but Meninga said no contingency plan was in place yet. “Not at this stage,” he said. “We will talk to Daly first, look at the scans and then make some decisions. I can’t tell you too much at the moment.” Meninga could confirm that he had celebrated his 10th year at the Maroons helm by signing on for another three seasons. The deal ends any chance of Meninga succeeding Tim Sheens as national team coach. Meanwhile,

playmaker Mitchell Pearce has been recalled while Josh Jackson and David Klemmer will debut in a revamped NSW team to open the Blues’ State of Origin shield defence. With Paul Gallen out injured, hooker Robbie Farah will captain the Blues named yesterday for game one at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on May 27, leading a team with six changes from the side that finished the breakthrough 2014 series. Unable to steer

the team to a series win when used in six previous years, Sydney Roosters halfback Pearce’s recent form demanded another chance. Coach Laurie Daley has named him at five eighth, forming a new halves combination with out-of-sorts halfback incumbent Trent Hodkinson. Queensland: Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Will Chambers, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Cameron Smith (capt), Nate Myles, Aidan Guerra, Sam Thaiday, Corey Parker. Interchange: Daly Cherry-Evans, Jacob Lillyman, Matt Gillett, Josh McGuire. 18th man: Dylan Napa. NSW: Josh Dugan, Daniel Tupou, Michael Jennings, Josh Morris, Will Hopoate, Mitchell Pearce, Trent Hodkinson, Aaron Woods, Robbie Farah (capt), James Tamou, Ryan Hoffman, Beau Scott, Josh Jackson. Interchange: Boyd Cordner, Trent Merrin, Andrew Fifita, David Klemmer. - AAP

Root salutes Moores In-form England batsman Joe Root says he has sacked former coach Peter Moores to thank for his rapid rise to international prominence. Root was dropped at the end of England’s Ashes whitewash defeat under Andy Flower’s regime last year, but the Yorkshire star went on to average almost 95 in Tests during Moores’ second tenure. And after 12 months in which he has made more than 1100 Test runs, as well as hitting three ODI hundreds, Root was voted England’s 2014-15 player of the year by members of the media yesterday. - AFP

Hadlee backs Black Caps New Zealand cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee has warned England that the Black Caps are ready to add to the hosts’ woes in the forthcoming Test series. Although New Zealand have won just eight of 99 Tests against England, Hadlee expects Brendon McCullum’s team to put up a strong showing in the first Test at Lord’s this week. The Kiwis have won four of their last five Test series to move up to third in the rankings, two places above England, and they earned plenty of admirers in their run to this year’s World Cup final. - AFP

Warriors make history Two Warriors players will go headto-head in State of Origin for the first time in history, after NSW second-rower Ryan Hoffman and Queensland prop Jacob Lillyman were yesterday both confirmed for next Wednesday’s opening match of the series in Sydney. Hoffman is the first current Warriors player ever selected for the Blues - James Maloney won Origin selection for New South Wales in 2013, the year after he finished with the Warriors. Hoffman, who joined the Warriors on a three-year contract this season, was in the starting side for all three matches last year when New South Wales ended Queensland’s run of eight consecutive series wins. The 31-year-old will be making his 12th Origin appearance. - NZME

Stewart ‘one of the best’ Manly NRL legend Steve Menzies rates former team-mate Brett Stewart as one of the best players he’s seen, after the fullback took sole ownership of the Sea Eagles’ all-time tryscoring record. The former NSW and Kangaroos forward was present at Brookvale Oval, where Stewart bagged a brace to go outright top of the Sea Eagles’ tryscoring log. Stewart entered the match with Penrith on 151 tries, the same as Menzies who he played alongside for six seasons. After the match Menzies congratulated Stewart on his achievement and spoke graciously about the man who surpassed his mark. “I’m good mates with Brett, he’s a phenomenal player, a phenomenal tryscorer,” Menzies said. - AAP

Future stars on the journey

Five young pacers earned their race day stripes in their first go at yesterday’s Mid Canterbury trainers and owners’ trials. From a standing start, the field settled quickly and got down to business with Buckeye and James Geddes using their pole starting position to lead the field with Asmara settling in the trail. First time past the post the field of six had stretched out over about nine lengths, with Jim Curtin and Buckeye asserting their control over the race and surging to the lead. The pace quickened at the 1200 metre mark with the Stonebridge Regal-Alabama Mary Lou three-year-old dictating the action. For most of the distance Ricky May and Awesome Art were happy to sit back and bide their time, making their move as they swung for home. Keen for a short cut, May took the four-year-old mare down the passing lane and as Asmara faded the pair were perfectly poised to run down Wee Jimmy in the race for the post. The Wendy Stevenson-trained Gucci Cavallo (three-year-old Stonebridge Regal-Gucci Jewel gelding) ran a solid and faultless race with Terry McMillan in the sulky, to finish in third place. Awesome Art, trained locally by Laurence Hanrahan, ran the 2400m in 3:06.3, 800m 58.2 and 400m, 27.6. Qualifiers on the day were Awesome Art, Wee Jimmy, Gucci Cavallo, Buckeye and Come and Go.

In brief College take out thriller The Ashburton College basketball team scored a thrilling doubleovertime victory over St Thomas’ in Christchurch last night. The scores were tied 71-all at the end of regular time, and 83-all after the first overtime period, but College managed to open a gap in the dying stages of double overtime to take the game.

Rules ‘bewildering’ Celebrated All Black Colin Meads says he is bewildered by rugby’s laws saying they are frustrating for players and bemusing for spectators. Meads is especially unsure about rucks and rolling mauls and said breakdown penalties were not given for the same infringement, it seemed to depend on which side had the ball. “I get upset with the law where they can knock fellas over without the ball and that’s legal. It takes the word sport out of it. It’s not sport if you are trying to knock some fella over that hasn’t got the ball.” - NZME

Blues lose their stars

Best foot forward for dressage hopefuls Nicola Sim and Chocolate Ice negotiate their way around the course at the Ashburton Showgrounds on day two of the Ashburton Dressage Group Autumn Series on Sunday. The pair took out the Class 15 Horse & Pony Level 3B Dressage title, from Mr Bruce (Rosalyn Williams) and Integrities Promise (Dani Simpson). They also won the Class 21 Musical Freestyle Level 3.

The Blues have confirmed that Steven Luatua and Patrick Tuipulotu have been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury. Loose forward Luatua dislocated his left shoulder in the 23-18 victory over the Bulls at Eden Park on Friday. Luatua, who had replaced injured captain Jerome Kaino, also has nerve damage in the shoulder area. All Blacks lock Tuipulotu has a long-term hip injury which has worsened and he too will not be available for the Blues’ remaining three matches against the Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders. - NZME

Lee shot a final round sixunder 65 yesterday at the River Course of the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg Virginia, over two days, to blast by the field and finish at 15-under-par, good enough for a two-shot win. The round featured a blistering stretch of five birdies and

an eagle in just 10 holes, highlighting why many have been calling her the next Karrie Webb for some time. The 18-year-old turned professional just eight months ago and had been experiencing a mixed rookie season before the breakout win.

Lee moves up to world No.19 from 59 with the win and hopes she can now garner some consistency in her performance so she can challenge current No.1 Lydia Ko. The Kiwi star, also 18, has seven LPGA titles on her resume. - AAP

Mainland Tactix coach Sue Hawkins has won the dubious honour of the first to be cited under the ANZ Championship’s new disciplinary measures introduced last season. The Trans Tasman Netball League issued Hawkins with a notice yesterday that her comments made during the broadcast in her side’s 68-49 loss to the NSW Swifts at the weekend had been referred to a disciplinary officer. The former Australian international was critical of the umpiring during an interview, accusing the officials of judging her side more harshly. - NZME

Boxing fans go to court Boxing fans across the country and their lawyers are calling the hypedup fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Junior a fraud and want their money back. And then some. At least 32 class action lawsuits allege Pacquiao should have disclosed a shoulder injury to boxing fans before the fight, which Mayweather won in a unanimous decision after 12 lacklustre rounds that most fans thought didn’t live up to the hype. Fight of the century? More like fraud of the century, the lawsuits contend. “The fight was not great, not entertaining, not electrifying. It was boring, slow and lacklustre,” according to a lawsuit filed in Texas alleging racketeering, a claim usually reserved for organised crime. A lawsuit filed on behalf of Flights Beer Bar in California said Pacquiao and his promoter’s actions were, “nothing but a cash-grab.” - AP

Time for Tinwald kids to tune up those hockey skills Tinwald School pupils (from left), Millie Copland, 6, Anna Green, 6, and Phillip Soshnikov, 6, kept their eye on the imaginary ball yesterday, during the school’s hockey coching sessions. The sessions have been running for the past few weeks so that every pupil in the school gets a chance to learn more about the sport, as well as the opportunity to develop their skills. Sydney last chance for Crusaders BY WYNNE GRAY The Crusaders have to be confident they can avenge last year’s title loss to the Waratahs. Anything less this weekend and they’ll be out of the 2015 series. Form has been an occasional feature rather than a consistent theme for the Crusaders, and that has hurt them in games

against those in the competition’s top six. So far they have managed a solitary victory - over the Highlanders - against sides who are sitting in qualifying finals berths on the ladder. “With the quality and calibre of the guys we’ve got, we have got some big game players there, so it’s about time everyone stood up and we’re going to

have to collectively,” coach Todd Blackadder said. The starting side will be revealed tomorrow with Israel Dagg fit again but only seen as a reserve for his comeback match. Another question will be about Luke Romano’s involvement at lock. His form has mirrored that of the Crusaders while Dominic Bird, unwanted for the opening part of the cam-

paign, showed out strongly in his return against the Reds. The Crusaders are in 9th place, five points adrift of the Waratahs who occupy the 6th and last qualifying position. Any slip-ups from the Crusaders in their matches against the Tahs, Hurricanes, Blues and Brumbies will push them towards missing the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

Blackadder confirmed there had been a finals feel when the squad resumed training and they had to embrace that mood rather than be daunted by it in Sydney on Saturday. It was a mini-version of the mission that faced them in 2011 when they were on the road all season after the earthquake demolished their Christchurch stadium. - NZME
