Schwarzenegger terrifies fans Hollywood hardman Arnold Schwarzenegger has pranked fans in LA by disguising himself as a wax figure at a branch of Madame Tussauds and then springing to life as they posed for pictures with him. The former California governor posed motionless as his most famous character, The Terminator, among the waxworks at the famous tourist attraction, and terrified unsuspecting museum-goers by suddenly coming alive. Schwarzenegger also strolled along the city’s iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame where he posed as a street performer, much to the delight of passing tourists.

Fans mob book signing They camped out overnight, arrived in trains caught at dawn and devoured the first pages on the sidewalk. Crazed fans mobbed a New York bookstore yesterday (NZ time) to snap up the latest Fifty Shades of Grey novel. High school girls, mothers with toddlers and buxom housewives queued down Fifth Avenue and round the block to get their hands on Grey and have it signed by unassuming British author, E.L. James. It is the fourth novel in the astonishing phenomenon that is Fifty Shades – a trilogy of erotic novels selling more than 125 million copies, adapted into a $US569 million ($NZ821 million) grossing Hollywood movie and credited with creating a new genre of adult literature. Sisters Kimberly Caraballo, 20, and Kira Guadalupe, 19, said they were the first in line, spending the night on an uncomfortable metal bench and dining on McDonald’s. “We’re big fans,” Kimberly said. Kira said their family thought they were “crazy people” and admitted it had been an uncomfortable night. “Next time, we’ll bring a tent!” she said. The college students said they couldn’t wait to read the novel.

‘Soda tax’ working in Mexico – research Sugar-control campaigners are hailing research from Mexico indicating a reduction in purchases of sugary drinks on the back of the country’s 10 per cent “soda tax”. They see this as vindication of their proposals to impose a similar tax in New Zealand and they urge the Government to adopt the idea with urgency. Mexico is the second-most obese nation in the OECD behind only the US. New Zealand is in third place with 31 per cent of adults obese. Last year, Mexico imposed an excise tax that increased the price of non-alcoholic and non-dairy drinks containing sugar by about 10 per cent. Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health and the University of North Carolina this week released preliminary results. They say purchases of sugar-sweetened drinks declined by 6 per cent on average last year and by 12 per cent in December.

NZ first to celebrate yoga day New Zealand will be first in the world to celebrate the United Nations declared International Yoga Day tomorrow and organisers of celebrations in Auckland want the day to be celebrated without “bigotry” or “extremism”. In India, where grand plans are being planned for tomorrow, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board had dubbed celebrations on Yoga Day as “Hindu religious practices”. Organisers in Auckland have been made aware of local Indian Muslims who are also calling for Muslims to boycott the event because of its Hindu-links. “The main concern, I believe, is about the surya namaskar asana (salute the sun) and people saying ‘omm’ while practising yoga,” said Veer Khar, president of the Manukau Indian Association. “We are not doing that and there is also no need for anyone to say ‘omm’ if they don’t want to.”

Sleeping out to raise funds Two Auckland University doctors and a medical student will sleep out for a night next month in Lifewise’s annual Big Sleepout to raise funds for helping the city’s homeless. Psychiatrist Dr Tony Fernando, Aids researcher Associate Professor Mark Thomas and fifth-year medical student Jimmy Chancellor will join more than 100 other Aucklanders in the sleepout, including Blues players Josh Bekhuis and Joe Edwards, singer Lizzie Marvelly and Herald managing editor Shayne Currie on July 2. A further 28 people will spend a night out in Rotorua. All participants are raising money from their networks to help to fund Lifewise’s “wraparound” support to assist homeless people into housing, including helping with addictions and mental health issues and connecting them with other people in the community. Last year, the event raised $177,000.

■ WEATHER WOES

High Country cops worst of snow By NadiNe Porter

NadiNe.P@theguardiaN.co.Nz

Rakaia and Rangitata Gorge farmers suffered the worst of the dump of snow that fell on Thursday night with some having to dig their way out of their houses just to get to stock. Mesopotamia Station owners Malcom and Sue Prouting were

well prepared for the whiteout although their tired bodies might not have been after having to snow rake 300 ewes and dig out 1.8 metre deer fences yesterday. About a metre of snow fell at the Rangitata Gorge high country farm’s homestead, according to Mrs Prouting.

“It was up to my thighs.” She had spent yesterday morning digging out dog kennels and horses and was “absolutely knackered”. Staff were “camped out” in the homestead because the station only had one generator. But overall Mrs Prouting said they had been warned early ena-

bling them to be well prepared. “It’s winter and we expect it. We’ve been lucky over the past couple of years.” Rakaia farmer Tim Hutchinson estimated just over 600mm of “wet, heavy” snow had fallen. The Mid Canterbury High Country Federated Farmers chairman and owner of Double

Mt Hutt skifield might have been closed yesterday but that didn’t mean field staff spent the day in bed or at a café. Snowsports manager Matt Turner had staff out of bed early, donning their warmest clothes, picking up shovels and turning out to help snow-bound Methven residents clear their paths and driveways. He made an early morning post on Mt Hutt’s Facebook page asking staff to lend a hand. And they responded, with up to 25 people pitching in for a clean-up-Methven effort. “There were some pretty long driveways out there but it was great to see the community pulling together. It was great, we had hot scones, hot drinks and bars of chocolate given to us,” he said. For staff who were new to town, the snow shovelling exercise was a great way for them to get a feel for their new community, Mr Turner said. While they picked up a few addresses of people needing help from the Methven Buy-Sell-Swap page, once they started working, word of mouth soon found them plenty of business, he said. By early afternoon, Mr Turner reckoned his crew had walked most of Methven and cleared dozens of driveways.

Hill Station flew over his farm to check for damage and said there was extensive broken power lines extending down the Gorge. Ashburton Forks farmer Chris Allen awoke to 300mm of snow yesterday and a farm full of flat fences. He had a “fair bit of work to do” to repair damage, he said.

Trampers rescued Five trampers had to be winched to safety after getting stranded near Pinnacle Hut on Thursday night. A search and rescue operation was launched after three women in their 20s set off their beacon at around 11.30pm on Thursday. They were winched to safety by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter at approximately 10.40am yesterday morning after deteriorating weather conditions prevented search and rescue teams from reaching them overnight. Two other trampers, who had planned to meet the women at the hut, were also rescued at the same time. Canterbury Police Acting Sergeant Paul Spencer said the trampers were experienced and had made camp in a sheltered area. “We don’t know why the trampers set off with bad weather and snow forecast but they did the right thing by setting off their beacon when they needed help,” he said. Mr Spencer said the weather conditions in the area were deteriorating and he urged anyone planning a trip over the weekend to check the forecast and postpone if necessary.

Snow - the realities T

he coolest thing about snow is that it hides all the imperfections. That hedge that needed to be trimmed wears its cap of snow well. That patch of stinging nettles has vanished, and the weeds in the garden have also disappeared. Just getting to the car to retrieve the camera through snow half a metre deep in places was a mission. Stomping out a pathway as you go is hard work. The reality of the situation becomes real – this is no fairytale. There are snowdrifts a metre deep behind my car, and branches down across the driveway. I’ve got to get out that driveway to the road – by tramping another path. Once I got to the road there was a decent track – made by a food delivery truck, which had attempted to reverse down Pattons Road, and ground to a halt at the State Highway 72 end. A farmer on a tractor arrived, but it took a grader to eventually haul it out. I meet eight-year-old Ashleigh Clark. She goes to Ashburton Borough School, but there was no show of that happening yesterday. Ashleigh was helping to shovel snow while dad took a break. “They should bring the grader back,” she said sagely, “They did it yesterday afternoon; they need to do it again.” Vicky Collins, a high school teacher who commutes to Christchurch daily, was battling her way to the front gate of the quaint old miners’ cottage. Her car huddles under

I head back up the road, passing a couple of tractors and a quad bike – forcing me to step into the deep snow on the side of the tracks – deeper than my gumboots are tall! This is not fun. My hands shake and I’m having trouble with the camera – cameras don’t like freezing either. At the Mt Somers General Store nine-year-old Madison Holgate is hard at work, digging out the forecourt around the fuel pumps for her grandmother Jill Kerr. Madison was making good progress – and it’s a good job because there’s no one else to do it. Jill’s husband had stayed up the gorge overnight – in case his loader was needed for road clearance duty. the gorge; search and rescue is looking for trampers trapped on Mt Somers; Mt Somers garage was open all night; farmers had been busy pulling out trapped vehicles. The food delivery truck had made it to the store but couldn’t turn around, which is why young Madison was tasked with digging out the forecourt; and why the driver was forced to reverse down the road. turing the moment, and picked up half a bale of peastraw from a neighbour for his three hoggets. By now my feet are numb, time to head home. The thaw is under way and the damage wrecked more evident. Traffic is becoming more frequent, but the road condition was worsening as the snow packed down. A mission is under way to rescue a 4WD trapped in a drift, a scene to be repeated a number of times over the course of the day. But for a brief moment the sun came out – the world sparkled, and the mountains glowed – the magic was back.

The weekend could be a long, cold and dark one for many rural people as EA Networks staff struggle to fix power lines broken during Thursday night’s snowstorm. As the day progressed yesterday, the number of calls flooding in from powerless customers rapidly exceeded the ability of staff to complete reconnections, said the lines company’s chief executive Gordon Guthrie. “For some people that will be the way it will be for the weekend. We have lots of little problems in areas where access is still difficult because of the depth of snow,” he said. The majority of the district’s lines network had stood up well to the heavy snow, with the problems generally on private properties or on small feeder lines, usually because of windblown or snow damaged trees coming across lines, Mr Guthrie said. Affected consumers were in the foothills area and across the plains east of Methven. The worst hit area appeared to be inland from Mt Somers where snow was particularly deep, but consumers in both the Ashburton and Rakaia Gorges were affected, he said. The district’s rural villages all had power restored by last night. ‘It’s just taking time now. We’re working 12 hour days over the weekend and then we’ll go into split shift on Monday. We’ll work until its dark, but it’s more efficient then to pull out and come back on at full light.”

Ashburton’s new EA Networks Centre faced the toughest test of its first six weeks in business this week when it was hammered by heavy rain on Thursday. And it passed that test – almost, said sports facilities manager Steve Prescott. “While there was nothing to be concerned about we had a couple of minor leaks around seals and joints. It was nothing catastrophic, we just put out a few buckets and towels,” he said. Contractors were called immediately and were on site yesterday making any repairs needed, Mr Prescott said. “There was no damage and it was nothing more than you’d expect with a new building.”

One killed in crash A person was killed in a car crash in Huntly last night. Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1 - just north of East Mine Road. Good profit The owner of an ex-state house in Mt Albert has made nearly $1000 a day on a three-bedroom house purchased 15 months ago for $758,000 and sold last night for $1,102,000. Ray White real estate agent Tony Tang said the 1940 house at 28 Rawalpindi Street attracted more than six bidders. It was bought by a couple who plan to renovate it, he said. The $344,000 profit represents a daily return of about $1000 in Auckland’s red hot property market. House prices rose 20 per cent in the year to June to a median price of $749,000. The weatherboard house was in tired condition with three double-sized bedrooms and a spacious lounge. It sits on a generous 581sqm site. - NZME

Body found A man’s body has been found in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill. An investigation was under way into the death of a 38-year-old man, who police said was found dead at about 9am yesterday in his Frost Road flat. It was unclear how the man died, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Iain Chapman said. “Until such time cause of death can be determined we will investigate it as if it was a homicide.” - NZME

One of the country’s leading infant formula suppliers has slammed the government for allowing the sale of raw milk to continue. Carrickmore Nutrition managing director Chris Claridge says the government’s decision is a huge step backwards for New Zealand’s food safety reputation and he believes people could be placed at serious risk. Food Safety Minister and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew announced that after “extensive consultation and review”, farmers could continue to sell raw milk directly to the public from the farm and via home deliveries. Ms Goodhew said she recognised people felt strongly about their right to buy and drink raw milk, but she was also aware of strong concerns about health risks associated with drinking raw milk and the potential risk to the country’s food safety reputation. “We cannot take short cuts for food safety,” she said. “Requirements will be in place for those who trade raw milk, because no matter how carefully animals are milked the presence of harmful bacteria in unpasteurised milk can cause serious illness.” Under the new policy farmers must meet requirements such as registering with the Ministry for Primary Industries,

meeting hygiene requirements, testing milk for pathogens, keeping records of sales, and labelling appropriately. However Mr Claridge says the new policy is “nuts”. “It’s the home deliveries that worries me,” he said. “If you deliver it to a home you no longer know who is visiting that home and who will be exposed to that product.”

It’s the home deliveries that worries me

According to the Ministry for Primary Industries website raw milk can carry harmful bacteria such as Shiga Toxin– Producing Escherichia coli, Campylobacter and Salmonella. Mr Claridge said the move was a backwards, retrograde step for New Zealand food safety. He was also concerned about the impact that a disease outbreak could have on the country’s reputation. “We pride ourselves on food safety and we trade on food safety worldwide,” he said. “This diminishes our food safety reputation.”

■ MID CANTERBURY HUNTING COMPETITION

In brief

Hunt on again for top game By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

Keen hunters from all over the South Island are battling chilly temperatures and snow-laden hills in an effort to bag a heavyweight for the annual Mid Canterbury Hunting Competition. The action kicked off yesterday, but the weather did hamper some hunters’ early efforts. While snow can drive animals down and put them within good shooting range, getting to the animals can be a challenge in itself. Andy Wilson, one of the event’s organisers, said he heard from a couple of hunters about how the snow has impacted their plans. “I have talked to a few people that haven’t been able to get where they are wanting to go so they will see what the weather does and might do a couple of day hunts,” he said. Mr Wilson said the competition was still as popular as ever, with 270 hunters registering their interest, up on 225 from last year. This is the eighth year the competition has run and the rules remain the same.

The time honoured tradition of making a grand entrance to the school ball had one student climbing into the saddle last night. While many of her contemporaries arrived in vintage cars, Ashburton College Year 12 student Katie Read made her way to the Hotel Ashburton on horseback. Dressed to the nines and ready to dance the night away, Katie saddled up her Gypsy Cob Jitterbug and rode from the Ashburton Racecourse to the hotel. For her mother, Annabelle Read, it was the end of 10 months of hard work and training. Mrs Read said her daughter originally decided she wanted to make her grand entrance on horseback about a year ago. From then on it was a matter of finding the pony with the right temperament and training it to cope with whatever was thrown its way. “It’s a big commitment,” she

said. “We’ve had to get her accustomed to massive big machinery but nothing worried her.” The training also included getting Jitterbug used to loud noises, such as car horns, and being around large crowds.

be used to drop hunters in remote areas. There are no restrictions on where the animals can be bagged, but they must be presented at the Hotel Ashburton car park for weigh-in between

11am and 2.30pm tomorrow. To collect prizes hunters will need to produce their firearm’s licence. Every entrant who weighs in an animal will be in the draw to win a rifle.

While the training had been intensive, Mrs Read believed both Katie and Jitterbug were ready for their big entrance. “It’s been a lot of stress but we’re very excited.”

Justice Geoffrey Venning issued a decision yesterday saying the consents issued on a non-notified business are set aside. Police have arrested and charged a young man in relation to the sexual and physical assault of a woman in Wellington last Thursday. Police said the assault happened shortly after 1pm last Thursday when a woman in her early 30s was out walking during her lunch break along the Hutt Riverbank near Mills Street. As she turned around at a sign advising the track was closed, a man armed with knife grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her in nearby bushes. During the attack, she was also kicked in the head and stomped on, sustaining facial and other injuries. Police said they had arrested a 17-year-old man in relation to the assault. He faced multiple counts of sexual violation, and charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, abduction and threatening to kill. He would appear in the Lower Hutt District Court this morning. - NZME

Resident escapes fire

Several swimmers at the EA Networks Centre say they have suffered cuts to their feet while using pools in the complex. Those complaints have prompted staff to undertake a thorough check of the tiled surfaces in all pools, but no damaged or sharp tiles have been found, facility manager Steve Prescott said. “We’re taking this pretty seriously and we’re doing everything we can to eliminate the problem but we haven’t found anything that could be the cause. We’ve checked tiles on the bottom of the pools and we’re trying to find why this is happening.” People who have alerted pool staff have been asked where they were swimming when the injury occurred but

there were no obvious locations. “The only place most people say they have been is the rapid river but we’ve been unable to find anything that gives us any concern in there,” Mr Prescott said. A non-slip surface on the bottom of the river could be a possible culprit, he said as this could cause an abrasion on feet that were soften by the water if some one spent quite a bit of time in that area. “This concerns me as much as it concerns anyone. Every time we’re told I ask where they were cut and they say in the leisure pool, the rapid river.” Pool users could be assured that staff were taking the issue seriously and were doing everything they could to identify any areas that could potentially pose a risk, he said.

A resident has suffered serious smoke inhalation and minor burns after escaping from a fire that gutted their Christchurch home yesterday. Four fire crews battled the blaze for almost six hours, Fire Service spokesman Andrew Norris said. The teams were called to the incident on Wayside Avenue about 12.40am and the large house was well-involved when they got there. The resident was taken to Christchurch Hospital. - NZME

One killed in crash One person is dead following a single car crash near Whangarei yesterday. Police said emergency services attended the single car crash on State Highway 1, just north of the Ruakaka turnoff. The crash happened about 3.40pm when a northbound car rolled to the south-bound side of the road, police said. One person died in the crash. - NZME

What’s your health sco

Men’s health week is coming to a close, but its message lives on. Men’s Health Week is not only a chance to think about health, it’s also a time to talk about what’s ailing you (or for women – the men in your life), and to do something about it.

Every three hours a New Zealand man dies of a preventable illness – for Maori, that rate doubles. To mark the week the Guardian asked six Mid Canterbury men with

PERSON ONE: REPORTER Name: Jonathan Leask (above) Age group: 20-30 Occupation: Sports reporter Score: 58 urns out – as I expected – I may have been a little slack in the whole doctors’ visits department. I eat a reasonably healthy diet and although not as active as I would like to be, I am no couch potato but in answering the survey I realised I’ve probably been a bit too lax with my check-ups. Now I am getting towards 30 and am set to become a father, I know I have to start being a little more vigilant and start to take my health more seriously as it is not just me to worry about.

T

a variety of different occupations to complete the online men’s health test. It encourages men to take a moment to evaluate their health – and note down their thoughts.

PERSON TWO: MAYOR Name: Angus McKay (above) Age group: 60+ Occupation: Mayor of the Ashburton District Score: 23 found the survey very easy to complete and it was food for thought on what I have or haven’t done towards staying healthy. I think we are very lucky in Ashburton with the health services available to assist us in times of bad health. Personally I feel very fortunate that I have good health, but I am well aware as I grow older that I may have to pay more attention to the lifestyle I lead. I would like to thank the Guardian newspaper for promoting this survey in the interests of better health in this district.

I

PERSON THREE: NEWSPAPER EDITOR Name: Stu Oldham (above) Age group: 40–50 Occupation: Editor of the Ashburton Guardian Score: 60 t’s 10.17am and I put down my third coffee of the morning to run through the men’s health check. It took less than a minute, which was about all I could spare between the meetings, the visits, the queries, the responses and the writing that needed to be done by lunchtime. That single minute was enough to make me doubt the quality of my life choices. Each question I answered came perilously close to shaming me into action. Do I deliberately limit the amount of fats in my diet (that depends on what’s in the hot food cabinet at Mr Man’s); am I happy in general and not too stressed (yeah, nah, sort-of); do I exercise for more than 2.5 hours a week (does nervous energy count); have I had my skin checked in the past year (I was briefly worried about a weird spot on my back, but I’m much better now that it’s winter and no-one else can see it); and do I eat five or more serves of fruit and vegetables a day (if porridge counts, I come very close). It’s 10.18am and the website is processing my answers. The website has frozen, so I encourage it back into action by banging, bashing, belting my mouse on to my desk. The results screen flashes up just as the phone rings. It’s an angry man who wants to know why the Guardian reports the views of people he does not agree with. I explain everyone has an opinion and I’d be happy to publish his. No thanks, he says – “I don’t want everyone to know what I think, I’ve got a reputation to maintain”. Suddenly, I’m reminded of the questions about stress and blood pressure. The results page is sitting, unread, on my computer screen. Keep your health in the forefront of your mind, it says. It is important that I book in for my yearly men’s health check and discuss all age appropriate health risks with my GP. Men’s Health Week is a great time to start being proactive with my health. It sure is. It’s 10.27am. I decide to find the time to improve things when I next have the time. Whenever that is.

PERSON FOUR: SOCIAL SERVICES Name: John Hobbs (above) Age: 20-30 Occupation: Think First project co-ordinator at Safer Ashburton Score: 44 was pretty surprised to score within the “well done, you’re making the right healthy lifestyle choices’’ section because I’ve put on a few kilos this year! However, I have made a few lifestyle changes to get back on track and I feel like this test was a good way to reaffirm that I’ve made positive choices such as cutting right back on alcohol, drinking at least three litres of water a day and exercising for at least an hour during the week. It is really important for men to regularly see their GP and ensure they have a solid support network of friends/partners/ family etc and to have an open communication line with them. It’s so common for guys to just keep to themselves when it comes to their health, particularly mental health, and I think this quiz is a good way of reminding us that while we may not like asking for help, everyone is willing to lend a hand.

I

PERSON FIVE: EDUCATION Name: Chris Murphy (above) Age: 40-50 Occupation: Principal at Methven Primary Score: 40 scored a very honest 40. I took the test last year and the results were similar then, so I guess I am not too surprised. I have been on medication for the last year for high blood pressure that runs in my father’s family which has meant I was able to tick all the boxes about check-ups with the GP. I don’t think about my health as much as I should and the sedentary nature of my job and young family makes fitting in exercise tricky (or that’s what I tell people). When I was teaching in Wellington the board at school paid for the male staff to get a Well-Man check. I asked the doctor if he wanted to check my prostate, he said he thought he didn’t need to but was more than happy to check my testicles. The fact that I still find this memory uncomfortable/funny and, if I am the same as many men, it does mean that the issue of men’s health has probably got a long way to go.

I

PERSON SIX: TRADES Name: Grant Porter (above) Age: 50-60 Occupation: Electrical inspector and after-hours faultman Score: 46 am reasonably happy with my score, it’s about what I expected. I have done a test similar to this before and think that they’re a good way to assess your health. As I have got older I have made my health more of a priority, and am due for my regular check-up soon. I don’t have an exercise regime as such but my job is quite physical so I do keep pretty active. As I lead a busy lifestyle I think it’s important to keep on top of my health as one day I’d like to slow down and smell the roses.

I

■ SCAM SAVVY SEMINAR

Better armed to combat scams BY CAITLIN PORTER

CAITLIN.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Mid Cantabrians are now more clued up than ever on how to avoid being scammed, after a scam savvy seminar was held yesterday. BNZ’s national security and fraud co-ordinator Bronwyn Groot stopped by the Ashburton Seniors Centre yesterday morning to chat to a 20-strong crowd about the art of scamming. Mrs Groot started out by laying down some rather alarming statistics. Around 15 per cent of New Zealand adults had been tricked out of money at some point or another, and on average $448 million was lost to scammers every year from around the country, she said. While she acknowledged there were numerous scams circulating currently – it is estimated there are around 262 billion scam emails sent out every day – she touched

on the three most prolific cons, phishing, phone fraud and credit card skimmers and scammers. She talked the crowd through a variety of popular scams, from people pretending to work for a reputable company or business, to people who inform others they have won the lottery or a trip and one of the most popular scams – people who ring to “fix” a problem with a computer virus. Mrs Groot said some scammers are so persistent they will spend up to eight hours on the phone or send hundreds of emails or letters. The most important thing was to be aware, she said, and not be afraid to ask for help if you suspect you are being scammed. “It’s okay to say no, it’s okay to hang up and it’s okay to shut the door,” she said. “Knowledge is power.”

Gallipoli soldier didn’t expect to survive Ashburton World War One soldier Bill Hampton survived Gallipoli, but brought home with him a sense of sadness, which continues to resonate with his son Alan today. Susan Sandys reports.

W

riting a letter from one of the infamous trenches at Gallipoli during World War One, Bill Hampton could not help but express doubts he would ever see his girlfriend and Ashburton home again. “Well it is the 10 of July and I am writing a letter in the trenches not four hundred yards from the enemy,” he penned to Maggie, also of Ashburton. “Little did I know last July where I would be the following year, do you remember me asking you to come to the pictures last time? I remember saying it might be the last Orange Ball we would be at together, I am just wondering will it.” He wrote of a lost Ashburton comrade Len Rountree, and mentioned Len’s father must be “in a terrible state about it”. He also explained he was writing on the back of a letter he had received from a friend. “Well fancy me writing you a letter on the back of Smith’s letter, I was forced to owing to the fact that I had to write soon as a letter cheers one up.” The letter is among a range of items held today by Mr Hampton’s son Alan Hampton of Ashburton. Bill survived Gallipoli after falling ill during the campaign, and having to be evacuated to England for rehabilitation. He returned to the World War One battlefields and later went back to Gallipoli as a sergeant to conduct burial duties. His World War One service was lengthy, altogether amounting to five years and 21 days. Alan said his dad, who passed away at the age of 86 in 1973, would rarely talk about his experiences at war. “They seen some horrific things, it’s only natural they didn’t talk about it,” Alan said. However, there were some small glimpses his father would share. One was in relation to the belt he brought back from Gallipoli of an enemy Turkish soldier, which has been on display at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Centre as part of a WW100 display. The story he would tell was that he heard a man groaning, and found it was a Turkish soldier. The soldier asked him for a drink of water, he gave him the drink of water and the Turk gave him his belt. Another was in relation to his beloved horse Liberty. As a Canterbury Mounted Rifles

member, Mr Hampton had been allocated the horse for the duration of the war. “He talked about that alright,” Alan said. “You couldn’t take them home. That upset him, that really upset him, they had to destroy them.” Liberty had been bred in Timaru by the Orbell family and was given to the mounted rifles at the outbreak of the war. The division’s horses were transported by ship to the battlefields of Egypt in 1914. At the completion of the war a large tournament took place among the allied nations, and Mr Hampton and Liberty were selected to represent the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. It consisted of an inspection, followed by horse drill and obstacle course and the whole tournament was won by Mr Hampton and his steed. The joy of winning was short-lived as the reality of what the end of the war meant for the horses sunk in. As it was too expensive to bring them home and leaving them there did not guarantee proper care, they were shot and buried on the beaches at Zeitoun, Egypt.

In addition to the Turkish belt, one of Mr Hampton’s original World War One uniforms has been on display at the heritage centre. Mr Hampton had been working on farms at Wakanui when he decided to enlist for service as soon as war broke out. He had arrived in New Zealand just five years earlier, from his home in Northern Ireland. He and his cousin John Hampton of Hinds signed up together. Bill’s number was 7/55, the seven denoting Canterbury Mounted Rifles and the 55 meaning he was the 55th member. John’s number was 7/56. John was not as fortunate as Bill. While he survived one brush with death after being wounded and returning home to Hinds to recuperate, he succumbed to gangrene in England after having returned to the battlefields and being wounded again. Bill and Maggie married and farmed at Southbridge, and in 1951 the family moved to Barrhill, where Alan and his family continued to farm in later years, helped by his dad as he grew older.

Alan said his dad passed on his love of horses and horsemanship skills to his children and grandchildren. Alan built on this in later years, becoming the chef d’equip for the New Zealand showjumping teams and taking them to Olympic and World Cup events. He is an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, a recognition he received for services to equestrian. “I still rate him as one of the best horsemen I have ever been involved with,” Mr Hampton said of Bill. His dad had been a bright character, a friendly family man who never felt bitter about the war. “He wasn’t that type of person, far from it,” Mr Hampton said. He would regularly attend national soldier reunions so he could catch up with his former comrades. He had kept his Irish accent, which became stronger at times. “Especially if he had a few drinks, the Irish really came out, he liked a bit of whiskey and I think we have all inherited it since,” Alan said.

Toxic liquor At least 33 people have died after consuming illegally brewed alcohol in India’s western city of Mumbai, police say. Residents of slums fell ill after drinking the alcohol on Thursday and the first deaths were reported yesterday, police spokesman Dhananjay Kulkarni said. “Most of the victims were construction workers and autorickshaw drivers,” Kulkarni said. According to witnesses, many of those who drank the liquor started vomiting, and complained of severe abdominal pain before collapsing. - DPA

Shooter had history of racism By RoBeRt MacpheRson Police have captured a white man suspected of killing nine people in one of the United State’s oldest black churches, in the latest gun massacre to leave the country reeling. Police detained 21-year-old Dylann Roof, shown wearing the flags of defunct white supremacist regimes in pictures taken from social media, after church-goers were shot dead in South Carolina. The carnage at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston was the worst at an American place of worship in decades, and recalled the darkest periods of US history. “I do believe it was a hate crime,” Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said. In Washington, a furious but clearly frustrated President Barack Obama said the “sense-

less murders” show the United States will have to come to grips with gun culture. “At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries,” Obama said at the White House. Members of the historic church’s mainly black congregation had gathered for a Bible study meeting. The shooter walked into the building, sat for about an hour then opened fire, Mullen said. Sylvia Johnson, a relative of one of the victims, said a survivor told her the gunman made a racist rant and reloaded five times during the attack. “He said: ‘You rape our women and you’re taking over our country and you have to go,’“ she said. Three men and six women were killed, and more people were wounded.

Among the dead was the church’s pastor, 41-year-old Clementa Pinckney, also a Democratic state senator. The other victims were identified in reports as librarian Cynthia Hurd, 54; high school track coach Reverend Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, 45; barber Tywanza Sanders, 26; church worker Ethel Lance, 70; church member Susie Jackson, 87; Reverend DePayne Middleton, 49; vicar’s wife Myra Thompson, 59; and Reverend Daniel Simmons, 74. A reported friend of Roof, Dalton Tyler, said the 21-yearold had spoken in support of racial segregation and had “said he wanted to start a civil war”. Another, Joseph Meek Jr, said he had recently reconnected with his childhood buddy. He was shocked when Roof started railing about black people “taking over the world” and the need for something to be

done for “the white race”. Detectives and FBI agents headed to Shelby, a four-hour drive away in North Carolina where Roof was apprehended during a traffic stop. FBI Special Agent John Strong said agents were investigating whether a federal hate crime had taken place and cooperating with local and state law enforcement. In a brief court appearance Roof waived his right to extradition, which means he will be headed back to South Carolina. The shooting came at a time of heightened tension in America, after several high-profile killings of unarmed black men at the hands of white police. A picture on Roof ’s Facebook page showed him wearing a jacket emblazoned with the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and former white minority-ruled Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. - AP

US balcony collapse firm sued previously The company that constructed the California apartment building where six young Irish nationals died in a balcony collapse has paid millions of dollars in fines over other faulty balconies, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Court documents revealed that the firm, Segue Construction Inc, has paid $US6.5 million ($NZ9.4 million) since 2013 to settle two lawsuits over

claims of balcony rot and failure, the paper said. Dry rot and overcrowding could be responsible for the balcony collapse that sent the six tumbling to their deaths and injured seven others early on Tuesday in Berkeley. There was a “high probability” that water had rotted the wooden slats supporting the balcony at the apartment complex, Berkeley Mayor Tom

Bates said. Five Irish citizens and an Irish-American woman, all aged either 21 or 22, died when the balcony buckled at a building two blocks from the University of California campus in the city. They were reportedly celebrating a 21st birthday party at the time of the accident. The city of Berkeley, in a statement published online, ordered a second balcony re-

moved from the building’s facade after deeming it “structurally unsafe.” The municipality added that an official investigation is ongoing and that victims’ families continue to arrive in Berkeley from Ireland. “There has been an outpouring of Berkeley community support for them,” the statement said. - AFP

US Marshals have added two prisoners who escaped a maximum-security prison to a most-wanted list of “the worst of the worst” fugitives. Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped 13 days ago from New York’s Clinton Correctional Facility, in an elaborate prison break that has been likened to a Hollywood movie. Joyce Mitchell, who worked in the prison tailor shop is in custody charged with facilitating their escape, which saw them use hacksaw blades to bust out of their cells, before they crawled along pipes and out into freedom. Police say they have 1400 leads in the hunt for the two convicted killers, described as dangerous and not to be approached under any circumstances. - AFP

ATM stolen Thieves have stolen an ATM from a general store in central Queensland. Police say the theft at the store at Alligator Creek, south of Mackay, occurred sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon. Recording equipment and cigarettes were also stolen. - AAP

Ancient pearl A 2000-year-old pearl, recently discovered in Western Australia’s far north, will be displayed at an exhibition at Fremantle’s Maritime Museum. The pearl, found in the North Kimberley’s Admiralty Gulf, is a highlight of Lustre: Pearling and Australia, which runs from June 20 to 25. The exhibition is expected to provide visitors with an understanding of the pearling story from indigenous and nonindigenous perspectives. - AAP

Finery on parade Fabulous frocks and heavenly hats were on display at Royal Ascot as the Queen arrived for one of the most glamorous days of the racing calendar. Thousands of female guests wearing spectacular dresses and eye-catching headgear descended on the Berkshire racecourse for Ladies’ Day yesterday. The Queen arrived by horse-drawn carriage with the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of York and Princess Beatrice. The Princess Royal followed in a second carriage with Princess Eugenie. The Queen, who earlier failed to win with any of her three horses, narrowly lost out again when her thoroughbred Peacock finished second in the Tercentenary Stakes, while her horse Capel Path also lost in the Britannia Stakes. - PA

■ BASKETBALL

Kody leads the way By Jonathan Leask

Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Kody Stuthridge swaps the round ball for an oval one several times a week. He suits up for the Ashburton College 1st XV to take on Shirley Boys’ High in the UC Rugby Championship today and mid-week plays for the College basketball team in the Thompson Trophy. The UC Rugby Championship is an established secondary schools’ competition featuring the top rugby schools in the Crusaders region, while the Thompson Trophy is in its first season. “It’s been a good experience for us all,” Stuthridge said. “We went into it probably not as strong as last year but we are certainly playing better.” College finished on top in division two in the first round to earn a promotion-relegation match against Rangiora but were out-gunned 88-70 at the EA Networks Centre sports stadium on Tuesday. “They out rebounded us and we didn’t play to our best but it happens.” Promotion-relegation games are cut-throat and this time it was a missed opportunity for college. Stuthridge has been leading the college surge in the new Thompson Trophy as captain and on the score sheet. For his exploits he was named in the inaugural All Stars’ line-up, where he will play for West against East on June 26 as a curtain-raiser for the Canterbury Rams on June 26 at Cowles Stadium. “It’s quite an exciting time and an honour to be named. “I’ve played with or against most of them through Mid Canterbury and Canterbury Country basketball.” After basketball on a Tuesday night he then has to turn his attentions to the oval ball. “It’s been difficult juggling the trainings but I’ve been getting through. I’m trying to focus more on my basketball but the passion for rugby is still there.” The College season had a slump, being on the wrong side of a few close games of late before a confidenceboosting win over Lincoln last week, their second win from eight rounds. “It’s been tough lately – unfortunately we haven’t been getting the results.” Stuthridge fills the midfield and is one of the senior players, but they seem to be a dying breed in the squad at the moment. They have lost the services of fullback Kieran Hunt for the rest of the season while both captain Benji Barry and Sean McCormack have been ruled out today. Add to that the distraction of the college ball last night and it could be another tough day for College.

Gallen unlikely to play against Knights By Matt encarnacion Scans have cleared NSW Origin skipper Paul Gallen of any major damage and he is considered likely to return to NRL action against the Cowboys on Saturday week. That would have Gallen ready to lead the Blues in the Origin series decider against Queensland in Brisbane on July 8. The Cronulla skipper has all but been ruled out of tomorrow’s clash against Newcastle after popping a rib cartilage in State of Origin II in Melbourne. Sharks coach Shane Flanagan

relieved at the news that Gallen won’t have lasting issues. “As of about 1pm he had his second scan to make sure that he hasn’t done any damage to his organs, especially his kidney and lung. They’re all be fine,” Flanagan said. “He got a bullet in and around where the cartilage is being torn. “He’s feeling a lot better today, especially improvement from yesterday again. “(There’s a) 90 per cent change he’s not going to play this weekend but he should be right for the following week against the Cowboys.

“That’s his main focus now.” Flanagan ruled out any suggestion of further damage to the hip injury that forced Gallen to the sidelines for eight weeks, including the Blues’ series-opening loss in Sydney. “That’s fine. Never even got a scan on it,” he said. “He said he trained really well in Origin camp last year with that hip and didn’t flare up.” While disappointed to be without Gallen for Sunday’s match against Newcastle, Flanagan refused to blame the State of Origin period for the loss of his skipper.

“We’re really disappointed. We pay his wages and he goes off and plays for NSW and unfortunately got injured,” he said. “But you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You’ve got to understand that if you want rep players within your club, they’re going to be taken away from you at some stages. “Origin’s here forever, so we’ve just got to deal with it. “We know where it sits in our competition at the moment. So I’m probably on the other side of the coin. I don’t look at it and say we’ve got to change it. It is what it is.” - AAP

■ FULLBORE SHOOTING

Busy week of shooting for Coby By Jonathan Leask Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz Coby Snowden will complete a busy week in Brisbane fullbore rifle shooting tomorrow. Snowden is the lone South Island rifle in the New Zealand women’s team that crossed the ditch for a trans-Tasman test match against the Australian women’s team before staying on to contest the Australia National Championships. Since the closure of Ashburton’s shooting range in May Snowden had no means of practicing, so instead had been focusing on smallbore shooting which she said was quite different but at least kept her up with the basic shooting techniques. Coby would have relished the only practice day before the international shoot, having to hurriedly find some fullbore form. The next day the New Zealand Ladies Rifle Team took on Australia for the Collinson Shield.

The hosts finished 20 points clear of their trans-Tasman rivals on 967.85, with New Zealand scoring a combined 947.63. Snowdon scored a total of 181.10 over the four distances as they battled liquid sunshine on the Sunshine Coast. They then turned their sights to some individual glory in the Australia National Championship where Snowden finished second in the B Grade Day Two Aggregate. The Queen’s Prize - the Australian version of New Zealand’s Ballinger Belt - began yesterday and today will be Snowden’s eighth straight day on the range with another to go tomorrow, before she returns home on Monday. Her husband John is also gearing up for some international shooting. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist heads to the Ohio, USA for the World Long Range Championships in August. The world championships - held every four years - are an individual competition and the Palma Teams matches are over 800, 900 and 1000 yards.

■ ROWING

Champ is back but Rio will be challenge By David Leggat Zoe Stevenson is in a club of three at this weekend’s World Cup regatta in Italy. Although New Zealand are fielding a bumper collection of crews as they prepare for Rio Olympic qualifying in a couple of months, only three defending world champions are back in the same boats in which they triumphed at Amsterdam last year – Stevenson in the double scull, with new partner Eve Macfarlane, and lightweight double Julia Edward and Sophie MacKenzie. There was a gold for the women’s four last year but that boat, a non-Olympic class, is missing. Kelsey Bevan and Kayla Pratt have been placed in the eight, while Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler are in the pair. And not forgetting Fiona Bourke, Stevenson’s partner last year, who is in the single seat vacated for now by world champion Emma Twigg, who is studying in Europe this year.

Ashburton Guardian 21

Stevenson said her combination with Macfarlane – a teammate on their first New Zealand selection together in 2009 – was coming along well. It’s a new combination but there are encouraging signs. “In terms of rowing it’s been quite a seamless transition,” Stevenson said. “Eve has fitted in really nicely, she’s such a relaxed personality and we get on really well. I haven’t had to make too many huge changes to the way I do things.” The only bumpy part of the business was the moving of Bourke out of a world title-winning combination. She made her unhappiness at the selectors’ decision public recently; knowing Twigg is sure to return and reclaim the single seat, she figures she may be left out in the cold next year. Stevenson is reluctant to discuss the issue, other than to say it was a tricky situation, she’s happy with the new combination and doesn’t want to dwell on it,

Zoe Stevenson

and wants to focus on getting the best out of the arrangement. This weekend they’ll get their first real gauge on progress but knowing last year’s key rivals, the Lithuanians, Poles and Australians, are fielding the same crews there’s no doubting the size of the challenge to come.

They train alongside Olympic and multiple world champion Mahe Drysdale on Lake Karapiro. The times of the two crews are very similar. “He’s setting a standard for us every day and if we can push ahead of him we know we’re going really well. He’s probably the best you could get,” Stevenson said. The duo have to finish in the top 11 in the world championships at Aiguebelette, France to qualify the boat for Rio. Short of falling into the water that won’t present a problem. But Stevenson’s sights are set higher. She wants to win every race this year. “It is as simple as that. For me, being a defending world champion, I don’t want to settle for anything less and the easiest way to do that is right from the get-go: win everything. “We don’t know how we’ll stack up internationally, we’ll find out this weekend; I’ve got high expectations.” - NZME

CT scans for Boult By Dylan Cleaver New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult was yesterday undergoing CT scans that should in the next few days determine the extent of his back injuries, before settling in for a bacchanalian weekend of laundry and vacuuming. Vacuuming!? “I did a tally-up on the way home in the plane and worked out I’d spent about five days at home this year,” he says at an unpretentious cafe at Omanu Beach, Mt Maunganui, where he calls home when he can. “I’m going to get a few loads of washing done and do the vacuuming. I’m looking forward to it. This is almost cause for the return of his Fast Bowlers’ Union membership card. One imagines the closest Dennis Lillee or Jeff Thomson ever came to a vacuum cleaner interrupted him in a hotel room after he slept off an all-nighter. Then again, Boult has never been your average fast bowler. There was a story doing the rounds, maybe spread by a fellow Black Caps’ fast bowler, that Boult one winter decided to play rugby instead of soccer. On his way to his first practice he saw the players going through some hit-ups, tucked his newly bought and moulded mouthguard back into his sock and circumnavigated the field on his way back to soccer. “Who told you that?” he laughs, before confirming the tale as largely true. Whippet thin and armed with an easy smile, Boult looks about as menacing as the golden retriever puppy, Lou, he’s brought along to this interview. He doesn’t sledge, isn’t one for standing arms akimbo in the middle of the pitch and it’s hard to recall him engaging in a bouncer war with anyone. Underestimate him, though, at your peril. His belief is the nastiest thing you can do to a batsman is to dismiss him and if that’s to put aside personal ego and pitch the ball up and swing it, rather than trying to send it whizzing past earlobes, that’s what he’ll do. “There’s other ways of being hostile,” he says with a mile-wide smile. - NZME

Kirwan pulls the pin J

ohn Kirwan has stood down as coach of the Blues. Under Kirwan the Blues won three matches this season and during his three-year reign have won only two away matches. “I love this club. I believe for it to be successful in the future it needs total cohesion from all stakeholders,” Kirwan said in a press conference yesterday. “I think it’s time for someone else to take over the reins. “I believe the Blues are heading in the right direction,” he said. “It’s a moment of reflection and a big moment in my life. I’ve had sleepless nights.” Kirwan took over as Blues coach in the 2013 season after the side dumped Pat Lam. The team finished 10th in his first season with six wins. The following season the Blues finished in 10th once again with seven victories before failing to reach the playoffs for a third straight

year this season – winning just three games. “There’s too many things in my way to stop the club moving forward and I wish my successor all the best.” The Blues have targeted former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga as the key to helping them out of their coaching crisis. Umaga - who was in Italy as assistant coach of New Zealand at the World Rugby Under-20s Championship but returned home to accompany Jerry Collins’ body home and attend his former teammate’s funeral - met Blues officials at their Mt Albert headquarters before he left. Kirwan said Umaga would be a fine choice to replace him. “I think Tana’s an outstanding young man. He is a guy who would be fantastic for here.” Umaga is likely to be a popular choice as coach and, if successful, would be a public relations triumph after a season of disappointment both on and off the field. He is seen as a coach with a good rapport with his players at Counties Manukau and is likely to relate well with a young and inexperienced Blues backline. After playing 74 tests, the former All Blacks midfielder joined

French club Toulon as a playercoach, a role he continued at Counties on his return to New Zealand in 2011. The former Hurricane also played a season for the Chiefs on his return and has had a close relationship with the Hamilton-based franchise. There was a feeling he could have pursued a coaching role there under Dave Rennie, an avenue which has probably been closed by the recent appointment of Tasman coach Kieran Keane. Three years ago he missed out on the head coaching job at Irish club Munster. He then committed himself to learning his craft at Counties Manukau, telling the Herald of his respect for the jump up to Super Rugby level: “I’m not sure I’m ready for that level. I’m still making mistakes here and I’m just fortunate these guys have helped me through making my mistakes and have got the results, so I don’t want to be making those at the next level. “I want to go up there totally confident in the ideas I have. I want to make sure that they’re sound and have the backing of being tried and tested,” he said. - NZME

Umaga keeps Blues waiting By Patrick Mckendry

T

John Kirwan

ana Umaga has received a contract from the Blues as John Kirwan’s replacement but has yet to sign it. His recent commitments and travel arrangements have probably contributed to Umaga’s delay. The New Zealand Under-20s assistant coach left the team at the World Championship in Italy to return to Wellington with his cousin Jerry Collins’ body and attend his funeral, but Blues chief executive Michael Redman and his board will be hoping to receive something soon because Umaga is their only option. Umaga has returned to Italy for the Baby Blacks’ final against England tomorrow morning. With only 20 players contracted for next season, the clock is ticking for the troubled franchise, which is pinning its hopes on the upcoming ITM Cup for the squad’s remaining 12 players. After not meeting last month due to the impasse over whether to retain Kirwan, the board will get together on Monday for what it hopes will be a gathering to confirm the addition of Umaga, who will need an assistant to join forwards coach Glenn Moore. It is understood that Coun-

ties Manukau coach Umaga has told the province’s chief executive Andrew Maddock that he will not be returning. Maddock yesterday did not respond to an invitation to comment. Yesterday’s press conference to announce Kirwan’s decision to step aside, organised at short notice after he made up his mind the day before, drew the curtain on what the former All Black wing called a “perfect storm” of a year. Kirwan recounted how he walked into the role with a light heart and his eyes wide open after 12 years of preparing for what he called his dream job. Three years later, that dream is in tatters and, in announcing his decision to walk away, it was his first statement that perhaps was the most significant. “I totally love this club and I believe for it to succeed in the future it needs total cohesion from all its stakeholders,” he said. In the end, half the board was against Kirwan, and so were many of his players. The bottom line was he had to go because his message wasn’t getting through to the men on the field and he wasn’t being fully backed by his employers. Kirwan, who presided over only two away victories during his tenure, said he would talk about his future with his family, but, significantly perhaps, coaching is not high on his agenda. “I’ve got to make some decisions around that,” he said. “I’ve got other passions in my life and I have to take some time out with my family. When you do this job it’s 24/7 and it’s been tough on them as well. I’m just going to take some time. Rugby is my passion, it’s what I do, I love it, but I’m certainly not sure what I will do moving forward.” - NZME

Highlanders excited

Futsal coming to town

By steve HepBurn It is just another game - but then again it is not. Trying to find the blend between the two is what the Highlanders need to do tonight. Play as well as they did in the regular season and also lift it a level to acknowledge it is playoff time. Sounds simple, really, but if only it was, and there are 23 Chiefs who want to do exactly the same thing. Highlanders co-captain Ben Smith said the performance tonight came down to getting things right at the right time. “It’s just about making sure our plans are really clear and how we are going to go out and play this game,” he said. “There is a bit of excitment in this group. Obviously it is into knockout rugby and that is exciting in itself. Just trying to nail down the plan is a big part of this week. “Composure will be a massive part. There will be crucial moments in the game and we’ve got to take those moments. I’m getting the right vibe from the boys. They are just really excited to get out there and give it a good crack.” Smith, who watched from the stand at Carisbrook when the Highlanders hosted their only other playoff game in 1999, is a key man for the home side. He has been in top form all season. Many of the Highlanders’

Highlanders co-captain Ben Smith

best attacking movements originate from the 29-year-old. He knows the onus is on him, but it is something he is not going to hide from. “We’ll look for opportunities. The way the game is played in the stadium, it is really fast and you look to move the ball. There are good opportunities for both teams to have a crack. “It is really exciting to have the Fijian boys outside me, knowing how they are pretty dangerous.

You just have to give them the ball in their hands and they’re away.” Between them, the established Highlanders outside backs have scored 21 tries this season and will be looking to add to that tally tonight. Three of those tries were scored the last time the two teams met in Invercargill, when the Highlanders romped to a 36-9 victory. That was only three weeks ago

but Smith said that game would mean very little when the sides ran on to Forsyth Barr Stadium tonight. “This is different. It is about whoever turns up on the day. And we know that. We have taken a bit of confidence out of the games so far but come Saturday we know the right attitude and really fronting up will be needed. “Because whoever turns up and plays the best rugby will progress to the next stage of the tournament.” The Chiefs have a completely different team than the one which put up the white flag late last month. Liam Messam is back, as is Sonny Bill Williams. Coach Dave Rennie has gone with a massive pack and may look to put the heat on up front, hoping to swamp the Highlanders front eight at both the set piece and the breakdown. The Highlanders must be awake to this. They got monstered up front in last year’s playoff appearance and can not afford a repeat. Smith said the side has learned from that game. “We took a wee bit out of the game . . . just how crucial playoff rugby is and getting things right. It’s awesome to have another chance this weekend. You’ve got to expect a massive increase in intensity. Bigger collisions. Everyone will be hungry to put their team in a good spot.” - NZME

Futsal is coming to the EA Networks Centre sports stadium. Mid Canterbury United football have opened registrations for a new Futsal league on a Sunday and Wednesday throughout the upcoming term three. Futsal is a form of indoor football where each team has five players on court at the one time - four in the field and one in the goal. They plan three competitions - a senior, youth and junior league. The senior league will play Sunday afternoon from 4pm-7pm and the junior and youth leagues will play on Wednesdays from 4pm6pm. They have already received several team entries and at this stage have openings across all three age groups. All grades are open for teams to either be made up of all male, female or mixed as initially there will be no separate men’s or women’s league. Registrations close on Monday.

■ RUGBY

NZ U20s well prepared for World Cup final By CampBell Burnes If tomorrow morning’s World Rugby Under 20 Championship final comes down to goalkicking, New Zealand should be well equipped against England. First-five Otere Black has been striking it nicely and slotted 13 from 14, and Mitch Hunt, who should be named at fullback, has 10 from 13. Black also kicked seven from nine for the Hurricanes, so is in prime form. “It’s going alright,” Black said. “I work at it pretty hard and it’s part of my role.” In the back of his mind, he knows that next week he will be in the thick of preparation for a home Super Rugby semifinal but, for now, there is some global silverware to strike for, a trophy New Zealand have not

won since 2011. “I’ve got another job to do after this. It would be pretty cool to have a win here and then come away with a Super Rugby title. But for now I am solely focused on this game.” New Zealand have built nicely through the tournament, giving their best display in the 45-7 semifinal win over France. “The camp was pretty happy after that semi. We knew we were building into something after the Ireland game (25-3) after that hiccup against Argentina. I think we’re peaking at the right time. We’re looking forward to the final. We’ll prepare well and it’ll be all go for Saturday night,” said Black. New Zealand won’t have to tweak too much for England. They know England will pre-

sent a solid set-piece and a slightly bigger pack, but a repeat of the effort against France is called for. “They are a really physical pack and bullied those South Africans,” Black said. “But our forwards have worked hard and should be able to match that.” Assistant coach Leon MacDonald was “rapt” with the semifinal victory, but knows more will be needed to subdue England. “They were a very good side and we nullified their strengths and didn’t let them play their game. We wore them down. A lot of our tries were off the back of very defence. We turned them over and took a lot of satisfaction at getting dominance in some areas over these bigger

packs,” said MacDonald. Most of the analysis of England has come from their 28-20 semifinal win over South Africa, a scoreline flattering to the Baby Boks, rather than the 30-18 pool play loss to France. “They fell asleep against France, because they were impressive in their other pool games. They didn’t fire at all, but that was the wake-up call they needed because they were very good in the semi. Their pack is big and powerful and they have a backline which they are prepared to use. They play a bit more rugby than some of the other teams.” Not to mention the fact several ply their trade in the Aviva Premiership and a handful are back to defend their title. In New Zealand team news,

blindside flanker James Blackwell was concussed against France and will sit the final out, putting further heat on the depleted loose forward stocks. Mitch Dunshea should slot into the No 6 jersey with Henry Stowers as bench back-up. Assistant coach Tana Umaga, the subject of speculation surrounding the Blues and who returned to New Zealand with Jerry Collins’ body, will not return to Italy. Kickoff is at 6.30am tomorrow from Cremona. New Zealand v England at JWC 2008 (final): NZ won 38-3 2009 (final): NZ won 44-28 2011 (final): NZ won 33-22 2013 (semifinal): England won 33-21 - NZME

Serbs sure to test Brazilians By Steven Holloway and MicHael BurgeSS The big show is finally here. After 50 games played between 24 hopefuls in front of more than 300,000 fans, only two – Brazil and Serbia – stay in the hunt for the Fifa U-20 World Cup trophy at North Harbour Stadium today. But while the pitting of South America against Europe may follow a familiar storyline, there is no doubting which nation is more accustomed to this stage. Brazil, after all, are playing in this final for a ninth time and will start as favourites to claim a record-equalling sixth U-20 World Cup title. Serbia, on the other hand, are participating in the tournament – never mind the final – for the first time as an independent nation, though their Yugoslavian predecessors did secure a famous win in 1987. But they deserve their spot after a series of stirring performances and look sure to provide the Brazilians with a tough test. Serbia The Orlici arrived in New Zealand with designs on going one better than they managed at the 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, when they were knocked out in the semifinals by Portugal on penalties. But after losing their opening game against Uruguay in a tough group, the outlook was grim. Only the most loyal Serbian supporters would have predicted the five successive wins

that would follow. The secret to Serbia’s success is their ability to work as a team, a team where the defenders are the first to attack and the attackers are the first to defend. But beyond the togetherness and never-say-die spirit the Serbians also have talented individuals within a well-balanced side. Goalkeeper and captain Predrag Rajkovic has been one of the tournament’s best, while Andrija Zivkovic, Nemanja Maksi-

movic and Sergej Milinkovic provide class and creativity. The only concern for Serbia heading into today’s final is the number of leg-sapping ties they have played over the past 10 days. They needed extra time to beat Hungary, USA and Mali, and as their energy levels fell in Wednesday’s semifinal and the game dragged on, the Serbians looked their most vulnerable. Serbia have already exceeded

expectations with their journey to the World Cup final but you wouldn’t bet against the steely European nation going one further. Player to watch: Milos Veljkovic. The giant central defender is on the books of EPL club Tottenham and has played every minute of Serbia’s campaign, during which they’ve conceded three goals in more than 10 hours of football. - NZME

Hockey women ready to take on Poland New Zealand are determined not to follow the men’s Black Sticks lead and make Rio Olympic qualifying harder for themselves than it need be, when they start their World League semifinal in Antwerp, Belgium tonight. The women’s team, ranked fourth in the world, kick off against lowly Poland, but coach Mark Hager is sure motivation won’t be an issue through the tournament. “You can never rest on your laurels or expect that just because your ranking is that high you’re going to be in the top three, so we just want to build to the quarter-final,” Hager said from Antwerp. The format has pool matches being used to finalise placings ahead of a quarter-final draw of

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) says it is listening to fans by downsizing the venues for two tests next year against England. The Wallabies will play England in three tests, with the first on June 11 at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium. But the remaining matches will be played on June 18 at the 30,000-seat Melbourne Rebels’ home ground of AAMI Park and Sydney’s 45,000-Allianz Stadium on June 25. This is a switch from the larger Etihad Stadium (45,000) and ANZ Stadium (83,500), which the Wallabies have preferred in the past but have failed to sell out. - AAP-PA

crossover games. That’s where the men’s Black Sticks came unstuck in Buenos Aires a few days ago, losing a marathon penalty shootout of 28 attempts against Canada, ranked seven places lower, after a scoreless draw. That result, combined with a subsequent lacklustre 3-1 loss to Spain, four places behind New Zealand, might yet bite their Rio chances. Although they know full well how the men’s campaign came unstuck, the women have their own ideas. “The girls basically said they didn’t want us as a coaching staff to compare themselves with the men,” said Hager, who is no fan of the one-off quarterfinal format, which he believes does not necessarily reward earlier success in the tournament. “We saw that can be a lottery.

The opposition defence can play well, their keeper has a blinder and all of a sudden you’re in trouble. “Obviously you learn lessons from it, but we are here in our own right and just need to concentrate on ourselves, put our plans in action and have belief we can play well and perform when it really counts.” New Zealand, the secondhighest ranked team at the event, have had a skinny preparation. Since the Festival of Hockey tournament in Hastings in April, the Black Sticks have had just two practice games against the world No 1 Dutch this week, both lost, but both offering good indicators of how much improvement is needed. “We were just getting off the plane and we knew they would really expose us and allow us to

identify our weaknesses. Putting our structures in place, that’s the biggest thing,” Hager added. Pool A consists of world champions the Netherlands, Korea, Japan, Italy and Azerbaijan. The top three teams at the tournament are guaranteed spots at next year’s Rio Olympics. NZ squad World League semifinal: Anita Punt (c), Aniwaka Roberts (Capital), Sam Charlton, Gemma Flynn, Rose Keddell, Sally Rutherford, (Midlands), Sophie Cocks, Amelia Gibson, Jordan Grant, Pippa Hayward, Olivia Merry (Canterbury), Liz Thompson, Julia King (Auckland), Petrea Webster, Kirsten Pearce (North Harbour), Brooke Neal, Stacey Michelsen, Ella Gunson (Northland). Sri Lanka were bowled out for 300 in their first innings in the post-lunch session of yesterday’s third day of the first test against Pakistan in Galle. Opener Kaushal Silva was ninth out after making 125. Kumar Sangakkara was the other notable contributor with 50. Pakistan had won the toss and sent the tourists into bat in the rain-hit test, with the entire opening day’s play washed out along with the opening session of day two. Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for only 74 runs, their last five falling for 39. - AFP-AAP

Woods bombs Tiger Woods threw his club, kicked the ground and even tried tying his shoes after a poor tee shot on the eighth hole to see if he could shake himself out of his season-long funk. But nothing seemed to be working as the 14-time major winner had four bogeys in his first nine holes to get off to a rough start at the US Open at Chambers Bayy. That was the good news for Woods whose back nine has seen the former world No.1 drop to 10 over through 14 holes. It includes a triple bogey seven on the 14th and a bogey on 13 after he missed the widest fairway in US Open history by 20 metres. - AP

Locke quits Salford Former Kiwis international Kevin Locke has quit UK Super League club Salford amid an ongoing pay dispute. Relations between Locke and club have been strained for some time and the former Warriors fullback’s resignation letter has been received by Salford and reported to the Rugby Football League. The Manchester Evening News report that Locke’s Leeds based solicitor, Richard Cramer, confirmed the 26-year-old’s departure and said his client was seeking unpaid wages from the Red Devils. “I can confirm that Kevin resigned as a Salford player on Monday, June 15,” Cramer said. “He is still owed a considerable amount of money by the club.” - NZME

■ TAURANGA

Cup three-peat the perfect present There would be no more special birthday gift for trainer Kirsty Lawrence than her grand campaigner Instransigent winning a third straight Kiwifruit Cup at Tauranga today. Lawrence took time to celebrate her 40th birthday with family this week but despite the personal milestone, her main focus has been having the Refuse To Bend eight-year-old gelding Intransigent at his peak for his special day. “It would be the cream on my birthday cake if I could win the Kiwifruit Cup on Saturday,” Lawrence said. Intransigent will come up against old foes in the Orora Kiwi Packaging-LRK Trayssponsored 2100m feature. In 2013, he defeated John Gray by 3½ lengths with Pump Up The Volume a neck away in third, while last year there was just a long neck separating Instransigent and runnerup Pump Up The Volume, with

John Gray back in fifth. That pair are again rivals for Instransignent today, but Lawrence is taking that as a positive sign.

“I’ve told Kane [Smith, jockey] to watch the videos of the past two years 11 or 12 times because the race has gone the same way each time. He comes

up the inside fence then goes around John Gray and wins,” Lawrence said. “It’s been the winning formula for the last two years and we’ve just got to hope it stays the same this weekend. He just seems to handle the Tauranga track really well.” Lawrence has placed Instransigent beautifully, with last year’s Gr.3 Hawke’s Bay Cup winner getting into the Kiwifruit Cup on the 53kg minimum, while John Gray carries the topweight of 59kg, 2.5kg more than the next highest-weighted runner, Pump Up The Volume. “He’s in just as good form as he was for the race last year,” Lawrence said, explaining that he wasn’t suited by track conditions for his last-start sixth at Awapuni. “The only difference in his formline is he hasn’t won the Hawke’s Bay Cup this year. Anyone who slates his last run is being unfair on the horse. They

ran that race 10 seconds slower than he’s ever won in. Everyone calls him a wet tracker but he doesn’t handle tracks that heavy. “If he gets beaten on Saturday, I’ll be scratching my head.” Lawrence is under no false illusions of the task confronting Instransigent this weekend, which will only make victory all the sweeter should that happen. “Three Kiwifruit Cup wins would be huge. He’s a little horse that everyone seems to have an opinion about and he cops his fair share of criticism,” said Lawrence, who races Intransigent with her husband Steve and the galloper’s breeder Judge John Clapham. “But he’s a 10-race winner who has banked more than $300,000 and to have his name in the record books for three Kiwifruit Cups, then he’d be the little horse who could. He’s an underrated horse and to do it would be huge.” - NZ Racing Desk

orkplace health and safety is under intense scrutiny in New Zealand as the Government makes the first significant changes to the Health and Safety Act for many years. The entire New Zealand workforce – from directors to newly-appointed apprentices – is going to have to adjust their practices to reflect the new legislation. A focus on health and safety is not only an important part of any company’s risk management, it is vital to business success. A safe, healthy workforce is more productive and poor performance in this arena can significantly impact on your corporate identity and reputation. New Zealand has an unacceptably poor record in health and safety. The New Zealand Government has acknowledged that existing approaches to health and safety management are not always effective. The Health and Safety Reform Act is aimed at improving New Zealand’s health and safety performance. These will include tougher requirements and duties placed directly on owners, employers and directors. Against this backdrop of

unprofitable routes. One analyst said it was hard to determine the full financial impact of Jetstar’s move on Air New Zealand. Air New Zealand shares were down 25c to $2.39 on Thursday night. Jetstar would spend the next few weeks talking to airport authorities and councils in the cities on the shortlist. Tourism Industry Association chief executive Chris Roberts said good regional air services encouraged them to get international visitors to see more of New Zealand during

government because it delivers better prices to New Zealand. On the trans-Tasman route we have seen lots of capacity, low prices, lots of competition, plenty of deals and happy consumers,” he said. In the lead-up to the last election Mr Key questioned Air New Zealand fares on regional routes which resulted in the airline reviewing its regional operations. This in turn led to some fare reductions and increased capacity into some centres, but withdrawal from three

A regional airfare war is looming as Jetstar starts services to provincial cities where Air New Zealand has had a stranglehold. Qantas subsidiary Jetstar said fares had dropped by 40 per cent on its New Zealand main trunk routes following its entry into the domestic market here six years ago and is promising similar savings on regional flights. The airline will reveal its fares in September when it announces the cities it will serve. Cities being considered include Hamilton, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson and Invercargill. Jetstar Group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said fares would fall. “What we will absolutely deliver to passengers are the lowest fares in the marketplace and they will be materially different to what the people in the regions have experienced in the past.” Air New Zealand said the Jetstar announcement was not a

surprise and it would fight back. “We have worked hard over a long time to build a strong, loyal customer base and we will fight hard to remain the number one choice for regional customers,” said Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon. Prime Minister John Key said New Zealanders in the regions would “be cheering wildly” at the news of Jetstar’s plans. “We love competition as a

OUR VIEW

Nothing uniform in uniformity Stu Oldham

EDITOR

I

t was heartening to learn local schools do not have blanket proscriptions on clothing such as puffer jackets when it comes to monitoring how their school uniforms are worn. The small sample in the Guardian this week took a pragmatic approach to what their students could wear over the workaday uniform: if it was warm and it did not defeat the purpose of having a tidy, goodlooking school uniform, then it was probably okay. The nasty southerly that surged through Mid Canterbury yesterday demonstrated why our schools should be comfortable enough to interpret their uniform rules in such a way as to ensure students are comfortable and able to learn. After all, that’s why the rules are there. Of course, there would have been little interest in local uniform rule had it not been for a petition at a school in Motueka, where students and others lobbied to have puffer jackets included on the uniform list in place of what they called an inadequate regulation jacket. Motueka High School’s principal used to be deputy principal at Ashburton College. Backed by years of experience, he reckoned the petitioners were more concerned about fashion than the uniform or their stated desire to stay warm. In layman’s terms, they were trying it on. Trying it on is part of every teen’s rite of passage – as is learning to stand up for what you believe in – but so too is learning to accommodate the rules and regulations of everyday life into the relentless pursuit of personal expression and individuality. As they stand, school uniform rules ensure each student portrays the ideal look of a school while avoiding the social distinctions that come with fashionable garb, designer labels or even access to a change of clothing every other day. If we are all judged on first appearances, then a uniform challenges us to judge students on what we learn about them, on what they do and what they achieve. Far from stifling individuality, it could be argued that a uniform helps everyone get the same start.

YOUR VIEW Pedestrian problems I am disappointed that Karen Wiggins feels the need to vilify New Zealand drivers with this one experience she has had (Pedestrian Problems, Your View) in Thursday’s edition. Unfortunately there are people out there who think that they are entitled to do whatever they want when in charge of a vehicle, ranging from incorrect (or no indication) as to where they are going, to being completely oblivious to all road rules or courtesies. I do believe that, in general however, the average driver in Ashburton would not act in this manner. There are w....ers in every country and I hope the person that did this to you feels ashamed (although I doubt it) and that they will soon lose

CRUMB

their licence ... if they had one to begin with! Ron Forsyth Karen Wiggins is right. Too many drivers ignore pedestrian crossings and a lot do not know how to slow down near schools. The Road Code says cars must slow down and be ready to stop for any pedestrians stepping on to, or on, the crossing. It says this also includes people who are obviously waiting to use the crossing. Drivers are meant to give way to pedestrians on any part of the crossing, even if they are on the other side of the road, and not drive through until they are safely on the footpath. How many drivers can say they slow down when they near a crossing, or that they stop when someone is getting ready to use the crossing from the

other side of the road? In my experience, pedestrian crossing users in our district spend more time giving way to traffic than the other way around. Al Williams

Ashburton River Last Saturday’s Guardian article (Water decline hits fishing) needs some facts added, as someone who has lived by the RDR’s South Ashburton outlet and a fisherman, I feel some accurate information needs to be added. The Ashburton river flows were regularly (almost continuously) enhanced by water released from the RDR at Mt Somers until 1986. The flows that many people knew were not just Ashburton River water, but on many oc-

casions over half the flow was Rangitata water. The same amount of water is taken by the RDR today from the Rangitata and South Ashburton River as it was in the 1950s. The salmon runs were also provided by small salmon released by the RDR. Those runs stopped when water releases stopped. Aggressive fishing in the river also meant very few fish had a chance to spawn and start a natural spawning run. The facts in this case spoil memories and allegations, and as for dirty farming and water quality issues, it’s only our ability to test at such a high level of today that we know the water quality problems are caused by birds – but I believe they will be staying put. Peter Reveley (Abridged)

Good on you mum Nadine Porter HALFWAY THERE

I

was, for the longest of times, one of those women who dared to have it all … an intense business, a busy family and, to be perfectly honest, a long line of headaches. When I was at secondary school I remember our teachers drumming into us girls that we were the leaders of tomorrow … that fulltime working productive females were what this country required. Translation – women, in my mind, were not meant to be mums only. They didn’t stay at home to nurture their children. Their role was negated, numbed in a way that has become a travesty to this country. And I became immersed in that doctrine – sure that I would never marry, never have a child because that was considered a failure – right? The irony was that I never even knew what a feminist was until I was living it, but I will tell you that if some of our super mums got the chance to sit down with the bra burners they might have a few choice words to say to them, starting with what is wrong with being a mother? This question echoes within me and many other mums who find that having children is now supposed to be a sideline activity … essential to the human race and all that, but sidelined nonetheless by an economy that demands that we must work to get ahead. But at what cost?

Somehow if we’re not running around like crazed loons trying to fit in with children’s activities, our hefty work schedule and looking after the household at home, we are a failure. The super-stressed mother who is so exhausted at night that she hits the bed with little more than a goodnight is our norm. It’s some life isn’t it? Ask our men (And yes we have men. It’s okay to love a man!) And yet I get it … I get the

whole bored housewife routine of the 1950s and 60s. I know that being stuck inside a home all day, every day can be immensely depressing. But there is a happy medium … a medium our government needs to look at and encourage. Interestingly an American review of 50 years of studies found that children whose mothers worked before they reached age three didn’t have worse academic or behavioural

Ashburton Guardian 29

POLL RESULT problems later in life than those with stay-at-home mums. In fact many children with stay-at-home mums had increased problems with depression, anxiety and lower school marks. However, children surveyed said they only wanted their mum to work part-time as fulltime working mums seemed “too stressed” to cope with family life. This leads me to conclude that it is all about the balance. So what of me? That girl, whose female elders thought it was a failure in this society to have children – what of her? And her ambitions. I’ve been the over-achiever, the girl that other mothers looked at with envy thinking I had it all. I’ve been the mum who has always had to sacrifice work or vice versa to be with my kids at their important events. I’ve been the lady who hardly knows what day it is to the next (and sometimes forgets to pick up children) nor what her husband is up to on the farm. Well I admitted to myself recently I didn’t have it all … in fact in all aspects of my life I achieved way below my normal parameters. I gave myself permission to enjoy being a mum and it was okay to enjoy time away from my precious little wall-drawing cherubs. I strive now for balance, not reaching Everest. More than ever it’s time we said “good on you mum” – it’s time we valued what is important, but I swear if the tiny terror (my two-year-old) draws on another wall in the house, I’m going to seriously lose the motherly halo I’ve been wearing lately!

The Order of St John: Here for life

T

he Order of St John motto is Here for Life and indeed they have

been. This organisation has been in existence for 945 years. The Order of St John arrived in New Zealand 130 years ago. Tomorrow at 10am the local Order of St John will celebrate serving and caring for this community for 120 years at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Just like the Order of St John is here for life so is our faith. This order was founded on Christian principles. As an organisation based on Christian values the Order of St John is about serving people in need, regardless of gender, ethnicity, status, bank account, beliefs and these are principals that all people of faith should minister by. The Maltese Cross, which is

Dellwyn Moylan

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

the St John emblem, has eight points representing the Beatitudes. The eight points of the cross represent the qualities of a good first aider and equally the qualities of a person of faith. They are humility, sympathy, gentleness, truth, compassion, unselfishness, peace and endurance or another way of looking at them from a faith perspective is to see them as the Fruits of the Spirit. The four arms of the Maltese Cross also speak to us about faith as they represent prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude. So how do we put in to practice the four Christian

Virtues as shown on the St John Cross. We do this as we seek to live out our faith by living carefully, taking care not to live in ways that hurt ourselves, our fellow humans and all that the Good Presence has created. We need to be good stewards of all the resources that we have at our disposal and we need to discern what is right and wrong. We need to be self-controlled, so that we bring out the best in ourselves and those whose lives we touch, whether we know we have touched them or not. We need to seek knowledge of those things that we should restrain ourselves from in order to save us from worry, harm and disappointments with ourselves and our actions. As each one of us wants to live in a world where all are

treated with dignity and respect, with fairness and impartiality, where we can live with each other in harmony, being honest with each other and live with justice and integrity, we need to live our lives with these values. And so whether you are a member of the Order of St John or not, its emblem the Maltese Cross has a message for each of us – we need to live with cautiousness, self control, fairness, strength and courage in our lives and we need to seek to be people of humility, sympathy, gentleness, truth, compassion, unselfishness, peace and endurance. ADVERTISING FEATURE

There is a place for you to volunteer! Chances are, somewhere in the course of your busy day, you will come across someone who has volunteered their time to enrich the lives of others. Be it the coach on the sidelines, the mum who takes Guides in her spare time, or the kindly old man who brings his faithful pooch into the rest home as company to residents - we have all been touched by those around us who choose to volunteer to make our community a better place. National Volunteer Week is a chance for all of us to celebrate the invaluable knowledge, skill and time contribution given by our past and present volunteers. From June 21 - 27, we recognise the critical impact all kinds of volunteering have within communities. This years’ theme focuses on future volunteers. “There is a place for you to volunteer (he wahi mohou hei tuao)” is about encouraging those that have not yet found their place in the volunteer community, to seek it out and be aware that contributions can be big or small. Regardless of how much or how little skills, time and experience you have, there will always be a place to volunteer. It can be as simple as taking charge of

Department for Internal Affairs' statistics for volunteering and donating for the quarter ending September 30, 2014: • Nearly 35 per cent of all respondents volunteered at least one hour of their time. This is the highest volunteering rate for the past five years measured. • Of those who volunteered, 59 per cent were female and 41 per cent were male. • Results from the September 2014 quarter show that people between the ages of 30-39 volunteered the most.

Why should people volunteer? Volunteering gives the opportunity to: • Give others the benefit of your life experience • Use your skills somewhere of interest to you • Learn new skills and gain experience • Meet new people • Add colour to your life • Brighten your day and have fun Regardless of how much or how little skills, time and experience you have to offer, there will always be a place to volunteer.

Is there a shortage of volunteers in Mid Canterbury? Yes, organisations are always looking for more volunteers.

How can people apply to volunteer?

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) This is an important weekend for matters of the heart, taking time out to hear yourself think, having your money hat on and communication lines open. TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) It’s time to declare war on any remaining glass ceilings, knowing you have the support of the professional gods all the way. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 22) Over recent months your heart has been steadfast in what it’s telling you, with the difference now that you’re able to hear what its saying. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 24) As busy as life may be today and as important as it will be to keep your professional and money hats on, take time out. LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) You’ve reached a point where you now know what you want from your relationships, what they need from you and how to balance the two. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 23) While you’ve reached an important weekend for communication and relationship matters there’s also a need to keep a professional hat on. LIBRA (SEP 23 – OCT 23) Do what you can to keep your professional and money hats off, instead embracing a passion for adventure and the weekend spirit. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 24) Weekend or not, the professional gods come together to provide the first real clues that something big is developing, demanding attention. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 24 – DEC 21) This is a time for getting curious about your personal and professional options, not for nailing anything down. Keep mind and options open. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20) With the Sun and Mars spending their last weekend in your work sector you need to keep your work hat on, focused on what excites you. AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 19) It’s now up to you to ensure dominant professional and relationship forces don’t squeeze out a need for fun and adventure in your life. PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 21) Do what you can to make home and family matters and life’s other needs a priority, especially with life already busy and set to become even busier.
