Ashburton College has made significant progress since a damning review two years ago, according to the Education Review Office. The school will not receive another visit from the ERO for three more years after getting the tick of approval in its latest review. A copy of the review’s findings released to the Guardian yesterday shows an improvement in culture, student achievement, and the relationship between staff and senior management.

The findings have been welcomed by the school’s principal and board of trustees chairman, particularly given the major turnaround it represents from the critical report card the school received in 2013. That report revealed “a lack of trust, respect and confidence in the school’s leadership affecting the morale of teaching staff ”. The ERO was not confident the college could successfully create a positive culture between teaching staff and school leadership without external support. However fast forward two years

and the situation is very different. Teachers value the professional support they receive from the senior leadership team, the report found. Student achievement and learning has also improved in leaps and bounds, with attendance rising, stand-downs and suspensions “significantly” down, and achievement in NCEA Levels 1 and 2 steadily increasing.

‘Get married or go to jail’ - judge A 20-year-old East Texas man jumped into a quickly arranged marriage after a judge told him he had a choice of getting hitched or spending 15 days in jail on an assault charge. According to court documents, Smith County Judge Randall Rogers gave the option to Josten Bundy, of Tyler, Texas, who was arrested in March on a charge of assault causing bodily injury, a misdemeanor. Bundy had gotten into a fight with the ex-boyfriend of his then girlfriend and now wife. The judge said he would grant probation if Bundy married his 19-year-old girlfriend, Elizabeth Jaynes, within 30 days, write Bible verses and attend counselling. If he declined, he would go to jail.

Steve Irwin immortalised in wax The wax figure of the late crocodile hunter Steve Irwin has been unveiled at Madame Tussauds in Sydney, and crikey it’s life-like. After four months of painstaking work, which involved inserting individual hairs, Irwin’s best friend Wes Mannion came to Sydney from Australia Zoo in Queensland for the big reveal. “It took them over a month just to do his hair, he’d get a kick out of that,” Mannion, the director of Australia Zoo, said in Sydney yesterday. “Steve was a real larrikin.” Seeing the life-like image of his best friend who died almost nine years ago, was joyous for Mannion. The zoo director said Irwin’s family, including his children Bindi and Robert, hadn’t been to see the waxwork yet. “I’m sure Terri will but I don’t know about the kids, they probably need to grow up a little more,” he said.

NZ hit set for world release Following success at home with her debut album, Wanaka singer/songwriter Jody Direen is taking the crowd-funded countrypop production to Australia and the world. After fans chipped in to pay for Direen to make Breaks Out in Nashville, the album topped the New Zealand country charts on iTunes and peaked at No.12 on the official national charts. Now she has been signed by ABC Music, the Australian national broadcaster’s record label, and Breaks Out will be released internationally on August 21. A week later she’ll perform at one of Australia’s biggest music festivals, the Gympie Muster in Queensland. “It is my first time performing at the Gympie Muster. However, I have been there before as I was privileged enough to hang with Kenny Rogers’ band and crew while he toured Aussie for a few days,” she said. “Watching his show backstage was my first experience of the Gympie Muster.”

■ WINTER ILLS

Bid to resolve office space wrangle By Sue newman

Flu battle continues By Caitlin Porter

Caitlin.p@theguardian.Co.nz

Many Mid Cantabrians are still battling winter ills as the flu season continues. Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said it was expected this flu season would be a bad one, as the Northern Hemisphere experienced a rather rough season. However, he said there were also other illnesses floating around that were “influenza-like”. Locally, health professionals are still seeing a number of people affected by flu-like symptoms. Dr Charlotte Cox said she was busy with patients with a variety of ailments. “I’m seeing a steady stream of seasonal coughs, colds, bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma,” she said. Steve Wise of Wises Pharmacy said he had noticed an increase in the number of people trying to combat winter illnesses. “There has been an increased level of activity in treating winter ailments …

it’s the nature of the winter,” he said. This year there are two prevalent strains of the flu, the A-strain and Bstrain. The A-strain has been reported in greater numbers in the North Island and is said to predominantly affect the elderly and the very young. The B-strain is more prevalent in the South Island. Canterbury has one of the highest rates for influenza-like consultations in the South Island, with GPs seeing between 150 and 399 patients a week. The latest influenza update from Environmental Science Research centre shows 78 cases of the A-strain and 447 – more than triple that of last month of the B strain within the CDHB area. Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone said children at his school are still absent due to illness, with an average of three children per classroom home sick. The same goes at Ashburton Intermediate School. Principal Gavin Cooper said cases of the flu hadn’t subsided yet. “It’s still hanging around,” he said.

ADVICE FROM THE CDHB Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said the vaccine is the best protection against the predominant strains of the flu – but it takes two weeks to become effective and doesn’t protect against colds or other viruses. Dr Pink said it’s also important to remember that vaccination is just one of the key parts of winter flu protection – keeping fit and healthy through good diet and exercise, limiting alcohol and staying warm are also key. The free flu vaccine, for people aged over 65 years, pregnant women, people with long-term health conditions, children under five and people with Down Syndrome or cochlear implants can get the vaccine for free until August 31.

ERO gives College tick of approval From P1 Principal Grant McMillan said he was “thrilled” by the report. “It’s acknowledging the work that a whole lot of people have done,” Mr McMillan said. However the school has also been challenged to improve in other areas,

primarily increasing achievement at NCEA Level 3 and promoting Maori achievement. The report found that the school needs to make more progress in supporting and promoting educational success for Maori, as Maori. That meant having a stronger sense of their culture and identity, raising

achievement, and engaging more with students, their whanau, and the community, Mr McMillan said. Board chairman Rennie Davidson said the school will also be looking at how it can raise achievement at NCEA Level 3, which has remained steady. He was pleased with the constructive nature of the report, Mr Davidson said.

A wrangle over office space in the EA Networks Centre could be resolved at today’s Ashburton District Council meeting. Fourteen years of minutes have been condensed into 14 pages of notes by council staff as district councillors try to decide whether promises of office space have been made and broken or whether no promises were actually made. On one side of the fence sit a cluster of sports groups who believe they were promised enclosed office space in the centre’s sports house. On the other sits the council, owner of the complex that has been completed with one large open plan work space rather than a combination of enclosed office and open space the sports groups believed they were getting. At a special council meeting last month, representatives of Mid Canterbury Rugby, Mid Canterbury Netball and Sport Canterbury, Mid Canterbury challenged the council on its failure to provide the office space they say they were promised. None of those groups have moved into Sports House and all say they will not until office space is provided. The idea behind sports house was that it would be an administrative base for several sporting codes who would ‘hot desk’ the open plan space for a few hours each month. The three key tenants were to be rugby, netball and Sport Canterbury but all three say that was contingent on having enclosed office space provided. Minutes from a meeting on October 30, 2012 with the user groups shows that representatives were unanimous in their support for the proposed design, an open plan office space with a meeting room attached. This plan was signed off and ratified by council confirming the intention to provide an open space sports hub for multiple users.

■ BARRHILL CHERTSEY IRRIGATION SCHEME

Scheme nears completion By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Massive pipelines snaking their way across Mid Canterbury will deliver water to Mid Canterbury farms this spring. Stage two of the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation (BCI) Scheme, representing the largest new irrigation development in the district since the Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR) in the 1930s, is among projects nearing completion. BCI general manager John Wright said installation of 70 kilometres of piping was going according to plan, with the project having been assisted by a dry winter. There would be about 30 farms, mainly arable, between Barrhill and Dromore, accessed by the new scheme, in an area that had traditionally relied on groundwater. The stage two development is more than doubling the BCI assets after the co-operative gained a Rakaia River take consent in 2001 and installed stage one in 2010. Stage two includes a new river intake near Barrhill, a hydrogenation plant, a seven kilometre river pipeline delivering water under gravity to the plains and a pumped pipeline at Barrhill. Pipe sizes range up to 1600 millimetres. Smaller diameters of polyethylene piping have been manufactured in Ashburton, while glass reinforced plastic pipes at the larger diameters

has been imported from Turkey and Australia in 350 shipping containers. The small hydrogeneration plant on a gravity line at the river will produce energy to offset the costs of pumping in the network and has around half the annual output of TrustPower’s Montalto plant on the RDR. The stage two development is on top of another major irrigation development in Mid Canterbury under way this winter. A $110 million upgrade of the Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Limited scheme will see stage one of the project come on stream this spring. About half the extended area being serviced by the upgraded scheme represents dairy farms. There has been concerns about the timing of the schemes, as in some cases they require farmers, who signed up earlier, to upgrade their irrigation infrastructure, and this is coinciding with the unforeseen dairy downturn. Mr Wright said the majority of farmers to be accessed by stage two of the BCI scheme were arable, so the scheme “did not have a large reliance on dairy”. Nevertheless, the downturn would affect everyone in the district. However, shareholders were taking the long-term view and access to water would make them all the more reliable and resilient in the future.

Two Mid Canterbury general practices have joined nearly 40 others in the South Island, forming an alliance. Negotiations between the 38 rural practices resulted in a proposal for the provision and funding of health services, and has been applauded by the New Zealand Rural General Practice Network. Two local practices – Methven and Rakaia – have taken part. Methven GP and Pegasus

Health Board rural GP representative Dr Gayle O’Duffy said Methven Medical Centre had signed an agreement with the Canterbury Clinical Network Rural Funding Service Level Alliance (SLA) in regard to the local revision of the Rural Funding Formula. While for Methven the new formula does not change the amount of money the practice receives, it has tried to create a fairer formula for all the truly rural Canterbury practices compared to the old national formula, Dr O’Duffy said.

Refugees to stay

The negotiations were spurred by the Ministry of Health which announced the way rural practices were funded would change, back in October of 2013. The ministry required district health boards to develop a model for the allocation of funding using their alliance structure. Alliances plan changes in regards to the delivery of health services. As a result, Rural Service Level Alliance (SLA) teams are now being appointed. The changes were designed

for a number of reasons, including encouraging co-operation between practices and ensuring patients had access to necessary services. In Canterbury there are nine service level alliances, including the Ashburton SLA. As well as the Mid Canterbury practices, other Canterbury practices including Darfield, Leeston, Oxford, Diamond Harbour, Akaroa, Amberley, Waikaria, Amuri, Hanmer Springs, Cheviot and Kaikoura, joined in on negotiations.

Pair in court over death of Taupo toddler A man and woman charged over the death of a Taupo toddler have appeared in court. The pair, who were granted interim name suppression, appeared in Rotorua District Court yesterday charged with assault on a child.

The Ashburton District Council may have been handed an unexpected, but welcome windfall. The Valuer General has added seven new irrigation schemes to the district’s roll for utility rating and that could net the council an extra $82,000 in rates income. The seven schemes have a combined value of $79 million. The values are still subject to an objection as part of the valuation review process and the rating valuations will not be applied until July next year.

Ashburton District councillors have given themselves a meeting schedule shake-up that will change both meeting times and council committee structure. Rather than hold its three council committee meetings over two meeting days, councillors have decided to have a mammoth meeting day on the second Thursday of each month, starting at 10.30am. The three committees will meet on a single day. Full council will meet on the fourth Thursday of each month. This moves the council away from its previous six-weekly meeting schedule. Councillors have also changed committee structure to make all councillors members of all committees.

Up to 27 people who entered New Zealand falsely claiming to be refugees will be allowed to stay, meaning 27 genuine refugees may have missed out on coming into the country. The Department of Internal Affairs has refused to explain its decision not to revoke the citizenship of the 27 people, Radio New Zealand reported. Meeting minutes showed Immigration New Zealand’s refugee and protection unit and its appeal tribunal were displeased with the decision, saying it undermined the protection of the refugee system from fraud, RNZ reported. Labour’s immigration spokeswoman Sue Moroney said 27 genuine families could have had refugee status if the frauds had not occurred. “New Zealanders need confidence in the integrity of the system.” - NZME

Greens change mind Pubs and bars will be able show early morning Rugby World Cup games - and possibly other major events - after the Green Party made a complete reversal of its opposition to extended opening hours. The Greens yesterday chose not to block a second attempt by Act Party leader David Seymour to table a bill which would urgently change liquor laws. That came after they were called “party poopers” and “wowsers” when they blocked the same bill on Tuesday. The legislation, which would allow bars to stay open between 4am and 8am for World Cup matches, passed its first reading last night. It would have a shortened consultation period and was likely to pass into law on August 26, several weeks before the tournament kicked off. Green Party health spokesman Kevin Hague said there had been a backlash from some within the party when they opposed the bill on the first occasion. - NZME

■ OCEAN WAITOKIA

The centre of German attention By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

A German film crew with a famous host descended on Ashburton Intermediate School yesterday. They were there to see student and talented yodeller Ocean Waitokia perform in the school’s kapa haka group at assembly. The 12-year-old is a contestant in Germany’s upcoming Super Kids Talent Quest television show, for which she will travel to the country later this month. The show’s host is actor Wayne Carpendale, and after the film crew got footage of the kapa haka, Ocean went and introduced herself to him. “Are you nervous? You don’t have to be nervous, we came all the way just to be here because you are such a special, wonderful young lady,” Mr Carpendale told Ocean as she smiled and shook his hand with the cameras rolling. Any nerves Ocean may have had soon dissipated as she tried to encourage Mr Carpendale outside so she could teach him the poi. “I just came from Japan, it’s 37 degrees in Japan, it’s too cold outside,” he said before laughing and walking with her to

a Maori po at the school’s entrance. As Ocean told him about the meaning of its many designs, she felt Mr Carpendale’s hands and said “your hands are so cold”. They laughed at the fact Ocean was a lot more acclimatised to Mid Canterbury’s winter temperatures, and was keeping warm despite wearing just her kapa haka dress which she had just performed in. The pair got onto talking about Ocean’s talent for yodelling, and Mr Carpendale told her she was not just a good yodeller, but a great one. He said it was really something for the crew to come from the other side of the world where yodelling originated, to New Zealand to see someone so good at the singing style. He asked her if she knew anyone else in New Zealand who yodelled. “Yes, the Topp Twins, and a friend of mine,” Ocean said. The four-person crew were planning to film later in the day at a rest home where Ocean performed, and her family home, before flying out to Los Angeles last night. They were on a worldwide trip, and had arrived in Christchurch at midnight on Tuesday.

■ METHVEN HOUSE

New Methven House planned BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The drive to fundraise $5.6 million for a new Methven House was launched at a public meeting in the town last night. About 130 people attended the meeting, where Methven Care Trust revealed concept plans for the new 20-bed rest home to replace the current 13-bed Methven House on a new site within five years. Trustees revealed they have raised $170,000 to date, and are sticking with the new building project following investigating an earlier offer to convert local hotel Methven Resort. Trustee Colin Lill outlayed costings of $1.3 million for the building’s administration wing, $2.9 million for the bedroom wing, $466,000 for site works, $647,000 for designs and consents and $240,000 for fittings, fixtures and equipment. The building would take up about one-third of donated land in Camrose Estates, leaving room

for a dementia wing and retirement villas in future decades. Mr Lill said the costing breakdown revealed many areas in

which savings could be made. For example, there was about $85,000 landscaping, siteworks and planting that local garden-

ers and contractors could help with. The trustees were leaving no stone unturned in trying to raise money, and appealed for ideas, no matter how silly they might seem. Fundraising initiatives to date had included letting land for cropping, rearing and fattening calves, and a head shave. In November a Methven and Foothills House and Garden Tour was planned. There was a donate button on the Methven Care Trust website, and in response to a question about whether someone could set up an automatic bank account donation per month, trustee Ian Totty invited anyone considering such an option to talk to trustee members. “The sooner this is achieved the less inflation will incur in the building, we are all the fundraisers,” Mr Totty said. Each seat at the meeting had a brochure about the project and a BNZ coffee cup, which people were asked to take back to their

homes and workplaces and fill with money. The new rest home would take advantage of the sun, with views towards the mountains from the main lounge. Premium rooms would be 25 square metres with a kitchenette and door to outside, standard rooms would be 16 square metres. The main dining room would flow through bi-fold doors to the lounge, and the bedroom wing would have extra lounge areas. In answer to a question on whether Methven Resort would instead be suitable for conversion to a rest home, trustees explained they had formed a subcommittee to investigate this following one of the resort’s former owners making that suggestion. However, it had been deemed unsuitable for a number of reasons, including the bathrooms being too small, earthquake strengthening requirements and the kitchen being on the wrong floor.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Number of resource consents continues to rise

It’s still quite steady and we’re certainly not falling off a cliff

BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The number of resource consents issued in the Ashburton District last year rose 31 per cent on the back of unrelenting growth in the number of residential subdivisions. For the year to June 30, 85 residential subdivision consents were issued by the Ashburton District Council. This was up from 73 in 2013/2014 and 64 in 2012/2013. Those consents included several with a large number of sections and while council district planning manager Ian Hyde said he was not aware of any large subdivisions coming forward, there was still a steady flow of infill housing consents being filed. Overall resource consent numbers, which include subdivisions, land use and ancilliary (minor) consents continued to climb year on year. While the number issued for the first month of this financial year (20) fell short of the bumper number issued in July last year (34), Mr Hyde is confident

- surveyor David Smith

that is not a sign of a slow down in activity. “It’s still quite steady and we’re certainly not falling off a cliff,’ he said. Surveyor David Smith believes that with several of Ashburton’s larger subdivisions now having few unsold sections remaining, there would shortly be a surge of new developments coming forward. “I’m aware of some large parcels of land that have been land banked and land that’s been rezoned. There are certainly a lot of landowners interested in doing subdivisions,” he said. Because some of those were adjoining blocks owned by different owners, Mr Smith said he believed this created an opportunity for co-operative developments to be undertaken. “A co-operative approach makes sense in terms of services and someone like the council could provide an incentive for developers to work together,” he said. He anticipates some of those bare blocks coming on stream as new subdivisions this year.

IS claims hack on US military ports last week that Hussain was third on a CIA kill list of Islamic State operatives, along with another British citizen, Raphael Hostey, a recruiter for the group who is also a close associate of Prakash and has named the Melbourne man as his “co-worker”. The only Islamic State members higher than Hussain on the kill list are the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Mohammed Emwazi, the extremist known as Jihadi John, the masked executioner who featured in a number of beheading videos. Prakash, considered Australia’s top Islamic State recruiter, immediately followed the posting of the list with his own message via social media, writing on Wednesday morn-

ing: “*IMPORTANT* Please follow and share ... Cyber war got em shook!” Another supporter of the group then tweeted: “KILL THEM WHERE YOU FIND THEM AND ENSLAVE THEIR WOMEN.” Another tweeted: “This information is very useful for lone wolves to act and kill.” Hussain is believed to have played a key role in the online radicalisation of at least one of the men behind the attack on a Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest in Garland, Texas. The list includes the names of more than 1400 people, the department or division where they are based, email addresses, postcodes and telephone numbers. It also purports to include

credit card information and addresses of air force and Department of State employees, and email exchanges between military personnel. The information has not been verified. A note accompanying the list, which is in the form of a spreadsheet, warns US military personnel that the Islamic State Hacking Division is “in your emails and computer systems, watching and recording your every move”. “We have your names and addresses, we are in your emails and social media accounts, we are extracting confidential data and passing on your personal information to the soldiers of the khilafah, who soon with the permission of Allah will strike at your necks in your own lands,” it said. - AAP

Ikea store stops knife sales after attack The Ikea branch in central Sweden where two shoppers were fatally stabbed - reportedly with knives taken from the shelves - will temporarily stop knife sales, the store manager says. “This is a decision I’ve taken and it is temporary,” store manager Mattias Johansson said yesterday, adding that the store would reopen on Wednesday morning. The Ikea store in Vasteras, about 100km west of Stockholm, has been closed since Monday when two shoppers were fatally stabbed in the kitchenware section. Two Eritrean asylum-seekers have been arrested on suspicion of murder, but police said the motive for the attack was still unknown. The two suspects were ar-

rested on Monday shortly after the attack. The 23-year-old was wrestled to the ground by police at a bus stop outside Ikea, while

the other was found with stab wounds inside the store. There were no indications it was terror-related and Swedish intelligence agency Sapo said

it had not been called in on the case. And Vasteras police chief Per Agren said there were “no political overtones”. The two shoppers killed were a 55-year-old woman and her 28-year-old son, both from the northern Swedish town of Skelleftea. The victims did not have any connection to their attackers, police said. Local media have reported that the suspects may have used knives they picked up from the store’s shelves. One of the suspects, aged 23, has denied any involvement in the attack, while the second, aged 36, remains in hospital in critical condition. He underwent a second operation for stab wounds and has yet to be questioned by police. - AFP

International and Dutch investigators are examining seven “considerable fragments of some size ... probably from a BUK (surface-to-air) missile system,” Dutch public prosecutor Fred Westerbeke said yesterday.

A tight-knit group of Islamic State fighters that includes Melbourne’s Neil Prakash claims it has again hacked the computers of US military personnel, publishing an extensive list of names and contact details and urging supporters to kill them. The list was published via social media by a group calling itself the Islamic State Hacking Division, which is believed to be led by British man Junaid Hussain, a close associate of Prakash. In a message which accompanied the release of the list, the hacker, writing under his Twitter handle Abu Hussain alBritani, said: “They have us on their ‘hit list’, and we have them on ours too.” The attack comes after re-

A joint statement from prosecutors and the Dutch Safety Board (OVV) said the fragments were “secured during a previous recovery mission (at the crash site) in eastern Ukraine and are in possession of the criminal investigation team and the Dutch Safety Board.” Flight MH17 was shot down on July 17 last year, during heavy fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists. All 298 passengers and crew were

killed, including 38 who called Australia home. Ukraine and many in the West have accused pro-Russian rebels of shooting down the plane, saying they may have used a BUK missile supplied by Russia. Russia and the rebels deny any responsibility and point the finger at Ukraine’s military. Investigators said it was not yet clear whether the apparent missile pieces found were related to the attack. “It’s too early to say that

the fragments we found were, for instance, from the BUK rocket that possibly shot down MH17,” prosecutor Westerbeke said. But the investigation was “getting closer” to finding out who was behind the attack, he said. The statement from the OVV and the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said the fragments “can possibly provide more information about who was involved in the crash of MH17.” - AFP

Body found A body found in the Hudson river has been confirmed to be that of model/photographer Ian Jones, the boyfriend of singer Annie Lennox’s daughter Tali, who had been missing since a kayak accident. Model and artist Tali Lennox, 22, was with Jones, 32, when their boat overturned on Saturday. Tali was rescued by a nearby boat but lost track of her partner who was declared missing and a search mission with helicopters and divers was launched to find him. - EFE

Market blast kills 47 At least 47 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a bomb blast in a part of northeast Nigeria frequently targeted by Boko Haram Islamists, a medical source and witnesses say. The explosion ripped through the weekly market in the village of Sabon Gari, around 135km south of Borno state capital Maiduguri, during peak trading around 1.15pm, the sources said. “We have received at least 47 dead bodies and at least 50 with injuries from the Sabon Gari market, where there was a blast this afternoon,” a nurse at Biu General Hospital, around 50km away, said. He said the injuries from the blast are mostly “severe” and that the death toll was expected to rise. - AFP

China landslide About 40 people are missing in China after a landslide buried the living quarters of a mining company under one million cubic metres of earth, local authorities said. The deluge swallowed 15 employee dormitories and three residential houses in Shangluo, in the northern province of Shaanxi, the city government said. About 40 people were missing, it said. Police, firefighters, mining rescuers and medical staff were sent to the site and residents in the area evacuated, it added. - AFP

IS frees 22 The Islamic State group has released 22 Assyrian Christians that it had abducted in northeastern Syria almost six months ago, activist groups say. They were among more than 200 members of the Christian minority who were kidnapped by IS in February as it swept through the Khabur region in the northeastern Hasakeh province. The Assyrian Observatory for Human Rights said the 22 hostages included 14 women. - AFP

Drug smuggler bailed A 91-year-old retired surgeon who claims he was duped into importing almost five kilograms of cocaine inside soap bars has had his bail continued. Police say Sydney man Victor Twartz was “legitimately scammed” by an organised crime syndicate who befriended him via email and gained his trust before luring him overseas. They are warning all Australians to be wary of offers that sound too good to be true but could end up turning them into inadvertent drug mules. Twartz was returning to Australia from New Delhi on July 8 when he was caught allegedly carrying 27 bars of soap, filled with about 4.5kg of cocaine. - AAP

The value of out of classroom education Sue Newman

CHIEF REPORTER

W

hether or not you support parents taking their kids out of school to have a holiday overseas depends on your definition of education. The Ministry of Education has a tough line approach to what is becoming an increasingly common practice. It believes term time is school time and parents who want an overseas jaunt with their kids should do that during the holidays. The travel industry of course, is wise to this captive market. Prices rise just before school terms end and drop again when school starts. For a family that’s a significant increase in the cost of travel and accommodation possibly meaning the difference between going or staying home. A recent survey found that around 20 per cent of students were absent during term time so they could take an overseas family holiday. In arguing against the practice, the ministry is saying that parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their children attend school; by opting for a holiday instead of school they devalue classroom education. That’s the purists’ view, but given that education is life-long and in its broadest sense sweeps across every moment of a child’s life, then travel could be said to be the greatest educator of all. Rather than being viewed as renegades and law breakers, parents who choose to take their children out of school for an overseas experience are enriching that child’s education. Yes, the classroom is the place where essential learning takes place, but the world is where learning for life occurs. Outward looking school principals see that. It’s all about balance and commonsense. Taking a senior student out of secondary school would rarely be a smart move, but for primary school students, two weeks spent in a different culture is worth more than two weeks of missed classroom time. That is positive absenteeism.

EYE ON POLITICS

t seems the good people of Ashburton still maintain a strong tradition of loyalty to the Crown, whatever the changes in attitude to it elsewhere in Aotearoa, New Zealand. At a Canterbury History Association luncheon the other day we were reminded by distinguished local historian, Dr Katie Pickles, of two commemorative trees, and the plaques that accompany them, in the Ashburton Domain, planted to remember two legendary “imperial” figures of the distant and more recent past, which reflect this lingering loyalty, the revered Florence Nightingale and the charismatic, if doomed, Princess Diana. Within two weeks of the demise of both these two global celebrities, - “The Lady with the Lamp” on August 13, 1910 and “The People’s Princess” on August 31. 1997 – the Ashburton council had met, decided its policy for the commemoration of each of these world famous ladies and had put their plans into effect. Thus, that most colonial of trees, the English beech, was planted by Mrs Henry Davis, the Mayoress - but only because her husband was the mayor; Lady Mayoresses in their own right are a more modern invention – to honour the nurse – “A lady with a lamp shall stand. In the great history of the land. A noble type of good. Heroic womanhood.” and, 87 years later, a similar, purple English beech by Lady Mayoress, Mrs Anderson, for the princess. The original is now a mighty tree which dominates all others that surround it though Diana’s has – symbolically, perhaps – had to struggle for survival and recognition. Even after the best part of 20 years, its future is uncertain. It seems both these personalities represented all that Ashburtonians found admirable about their colonial roots, which they apparently wanted, then and now(?), to keep very

Standing proudly in a prime spot in the Ashburton Domain is this English beech tree which was planted in memory of Florence Nightingale.

much alive. Though Florence Nightingale, after her heroics in the Crimean Wars of the 1870s, was obliged to spend much of the rest of her life bed-ridden, her physical similarity to Queen Victoria as well as her undying respect for the monarch kept her constantly in the public eye. Many Victorians saw Florence as “royal” in manner and in commitment to her cause. A generation or two later, Princess Di – as she was better known – very obviously had her own brand of royal mana and beauty, with its overwhelming appeal, the memory of whom, Ashburtonians, like everyone else, were keen to preserve. What’s more, she was thought to have had a raw deal at the hands of a stuffy Royal Family who took a dim view of her overwhelming, somewhat “common”, popularity. That her two sons have subsequently established their own individual popularity has gone a long way to sustaining the lasting love for their mother. So all that probably adds up to the people of Ashburton being perhaps the nation’s leading opponents of the insistence of Prime Minister Key to do away with our long-time, Union

Jack-included, flag in favour of a more trendy alternative. With that unwelcome change in the offing, the suggestion the National Anthem should go too, is a double whammy that almost certainly keeps a lot of Ashburtonians awake for long hours of the night as it does loyal citizens throughout the realm. Meanwhile, back on the political treadmill, Winston “Opportunist” Peters has made all the running while Parliament has been in recess. Talk of 10,000 members of New Zealand First by the time of the 2017 election, NZ First’s heady prospects of becoming the third largest party at the expense of the woeful Greens and, above all, the certainty, as Mr Peters sees it, of his becoming “King Maker” yet again, have all seen him well ahead of the play. His reincarnation as the Member for Northland might be thought to have given him a new lease of political life even though he has never been remotely short of that quality. On top of all that, he is to be the manager of the MPs’ rugby XV going to the World Cup next month. No doubt, should the team suffer injuries,

Winston will be prepared to go onto the paddock and do his bit, albeit at 70 years of age! His political dexterity is endless and impossible to ignore. As Winston’s star shoots across the political firmament John Key’s looks like the dying embers of an expended rocket. The rock on which National is both founded and relies, farming - dairying in particular - has come a cropper, with many farmers facing imminent bankruptcy. The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP) has brought little comfort and the murky background to our establishment of an $11m farm in Saudi Arabia doesn’t look like a vote catcher either. In the mix somewhere is Mr Little but his voice has seemed barely audible. The return of a sitting parliament will no doubt give all involved a welcome boost, members and media alike. After thought: Just to emphasise Ashburton’s “love affair” with the royal family, it’s worth pointing out there are at least seven other royal-related trees in the Domain Gardens - including three oaks, a cherry and a lime - one of them planted by Her Majesty herself.

■ MAINZEAL

Board was ‘reckless’ BY HAMISH FLETCHER Former Prime Minister Dame Jenny Shipley and four other Mainzeal board members are accused of failing to appropriately assess the company’s financial position, according to the liquidators suing them. Shipley and fellow Mainzeal directors Richard Yan, Peter Gomm, Clive Tilby and Sir Paul Collins and Siew Kwan are defending a lawsuit from the construction group’s liquidators accusing them of reckless trading and alleging they breached their duties. More details of the lawsuit have emerged this week after Chief High Court Judge Geoffrey Venning allowed access to court documents in the case. The liquidators say Shipley,

Yan, Gomm, Tilby and Collins failed to make an appropriate assessment of Mainzeal Property and Construction’s financial position and the implications of it continuing to trade after July 2011, when it allegedly failed a limb of an insolvency test. By allowing Mainzeal Property and Construction to continue to trade after July 2011 until its collapse in 2013, the liquidators say the five board members caused a $47.4 million increase in the company’s liability to its creditors. The liquidators are seeking payment of that amount from those directors. Mainzeal’s collapse into receivership on Waitangi Day 2013 sent shockwaves through the building industry.

BY ANNE GIBSON Wealthy overseas visitors gambling in New Zealand appear to have boosted SkyCity Entertainment Group’s bottom line and it singled out Asian VIPs for special mention in its annual result yesterday. SkyCity chief executive Nigel Morrison attributed the 30.7 per cent net profit after tax lift to an improved win rate in international business of 1.36 per cent compared with 0.97 per cent last year. “Growth in international business turnover continues to be underpinned by the success of the expanded sales and marketing team, increased recognition of the Horizon brand and offering, a strong focus on direct relationships with VIP customers and continued growth in the number of Asian VIP customers visiting New Zealand,” the business said. International business delivered record activity during the full year, with turnover increasing to $9.3 billion and normalised earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda) up 35.1 per cent to $26.4 million, SkyCity said. Revenue for the year cracked the billion-dollar barrier -

$1.009 billion, compared with the previous year’s $902.5 million. Net profit after tax of $128.7 million for the year ended June 30 significantly exceeded the $98.5 million the previous year. But a final dividend of 10c per share remained unchanged during the two-year period. The result showed while the gaming giant had particularly strong growth in Auckland, it suffered a disappointing performance in Adelaide. “Auckland continues to be the standout performer across the group, delivering record results, with normalised revenue up 13 per cent and normalised ebitda up 13.7 per cent from $217.9 million to $247.8 million. “This growth continues the positive recent momentum across all business segments, with the [Auckland] property now having delivered six consecutive quarters,” SkyCity said. “Going forward, the Auckland property will also benefit from the activation of the NZ International Convention Centre gaming concessions, which are expected to start by the end of 2015 following signing of a binding building works contract for the NZICC.” - NZME

Record profit for ASB ASB, which reported a record annual profit yesterday, is increasing rural provisioning as a slump in dairy prices puts increasing financial pressure on farmers. Chief executive Barbara Chapman said that while she remained positive about the long-term outlook for the dairy sector, the bank was keeping a “close eye” on the industry. Fonterra last week slashed its farm gate milk price from $5.25 per kg of milk solids to $3.85 per kg, which is well below break-even for most farmers. “It is fair to say that it is difficult for those farmers,” Chapman said. - NZME

Souter going public? Sir Brian Souter says his New Zealand growth plan will be a defining moment for his company. Bus and ferry operator Souter Group is flagging the possibility of a public listing as it puts down the accelerator on growth. The company, owned by international transport investor Sir Brian Souter and his family, was spending about $100 million over a three-year period and mulling an NZX listing to help with expansion. - NZME

Mining jobs lost Hundreds of job losses in the West Coast mining industry have been compounded by cutbacks in the region’s industrial and engineering companies. In early May, more than 113 mine workers at the Stockton open-cast coalmine lost their jobs, on top of 187 redundancies at the mine in June last year, and 250 the year before, on the back of the continuing slump in world coal prices. Oceana Gold last year chopped 51 jobs from its Reefton mine, which will shed a further 120 jobs by the end of this year, leaving just six as the mine is put into ‘care and maintenance’. - NZME

Solid Energy ‘positive’ Solid Energy workers have been told to expect a “positive” announcement from the debtridden coalminer today. Solid Energy has called meetings with its workers nationwide at 11am and a media conference at midday. Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union organiser Garth Elliott said workers had been promised the news would be “very positive in regards to the company moving forward”. “They’ve made it very, very clear they are not having a meeting to announce restructures, redundancies, closures or liquidation.” - NZME

Flyers liking Jetstar Flyers are enthusiastic about more regional competition and almost 70 per cent of them have driven to other cities to get cheaper fares, according to a survey commissioned by Jetstar. The low cost airline plans to start the first of its regional operations in December and says an overwhelming number of Kiwis say it’s a good idea. An online survey of 900 New Zealanders who have taken at least one regional flight during the past year shows between 89 per cent and 94 per cent of them support the entry of Jetstar into the market. The strongest support is from the regions. - NZME

■ LAMB EXPORTS

Aussies fleece Kiwi f BY NADINE PORTER

NADINE.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

New Zealand lamb producers are being fleeced by their Aussie counterparts at the moment with premium lamb fetching over $1.70 more per kilogram than their Kiwi cousins. Adding insult to injury, New Zealand consumers have been enjoying cheap Australian lamb in our supermarkets as Aussie exporters ramp up supply here. Last year Australia exported 526 tonnes of lamb to New Zealand – more than doubling the volume of the previous year, and that figure looks set to grow again. While New Zealand legs of lamb have been fetching around $1.80 per 100 grams their Aussie equivalents have been only $1.19. Beef and Lamb New Zealand CEO Rod Slater said supermarkets and retail outlets’ first priority was to stock New Zealand beef and lamb. Around 92 per cent of Kiwi lamb gets exported, he said, and that caused a shortfall in supply when supermarkets do a loss leader promotion. “So they have no option but to look offshore.” Mr Slater said the Aussie imports had been happening for years but it was a two-way street with Australian farmers often unhappy at New Zealand lamb in their supermarkets. Towards the end of the season supply always gets tight, he said. “In a perfect world we could do with more New Zealand lamb coming on to the market at this time but to be frank I just don’t see it changing.” However, all retailers without ex-

UK farmers still unhappy with NZ lamb imports The stoush over New Zealand lamb flooding UK supermarkets during the shoulder of the season continues with the National Farmers Union refuting a giant supermarket chain’s claims that stocking our lamb helped them to sell more British product. Following weeks of protests over ailing livestock industries the NFU has taken supermarkets

to task for not backing British lamb. NFU livestock board chairman Charles Sercombe said a spokesperson from Tesco said stocking imported lamb from New Zealand helped to reduce the price of British lamb and therefore increased demand. “Logic dictates that if there’s only British on the shelf then we are going to sell it.”

suppliers and our goal is to provide our customers with quality homegrown products.” Meat and Livestock Australia media manager Rose Glasser said volumes of lamb exports to New Zealand had been “quite high so far this year”. She said the January to July total was almost double what they exported for all of 2014. “However, overall, total volumes of lamb we send to New Zealand is very low, compared to our other export destinations.” Latest Australian price schedules show premium grade lamb fetching up to $6.90 per kilogram while New Zealand farmers on winter contracts could expect around $5.20.

Vetlife is warning dairy farmers of the dangers of an unusual presentation of salmonella brandenburg in heifers this year that may infect unsuspecting staff. Ashburton vet Lorna Humm said normally salmonella makes cows very sick but this year cows appear healthy while carrying the disease, but their calves are born dead. “But the calves are not smelly or rotten.” In a statement, Vetlife said typically heifers will back up, start to calve but will not get on with it. “And when examined the calf is just sitting there.” First seen in sheep in Mid Canterbury in 1996, the bacterial infection has been dreaded by farmers and humans alike. Normally aborting cows typically present as off colour for one to three days before calving a rotten calf. Scouring and death often occurs. The bacteria can be highly contagious to humans so good hygiene must be maintained. Vetlife particularly cautions pregnant women, the elderly, children and any one on any form of immune suppressive therapy to be careful. “An effective vaccine is available and vaccination in the face of a salmonella outbreak can help to damp down the abortions and reduce the infection in your herd.”

■ NISSAN NAVARA ST DOUBLE CAB 4WD MANUAL

Exceeding all exp

F

or a start, this new Navara driven was almost virginal, with just 47 kilometres on its odometer, so it matched its “Aspen white” livery, which enhanced its visually appealing, modern looks. These looks are obviously an evolution from the previous D40, so it’s quickly recognised as a Navara. Size wise it’s pretty much the same, just a little shorter. It’s built on a new, ladder chassis and the previous leaf-spring rear suspension is replaced by a more car-like, multi-link, coil-spring setup. And although this means a 100kg weight saving, Nissan says it retains the strength and durability needed to both carry up to 1000kg in its spacious well-side. The diesel’s towing capability remains at 3500kg. There’ll soon be a myriad of 14 options available in the new line-up from the starter, DX 2.5 litre, 2WD petrol to the many variations of 2.3 litre diesel powered utes. Amongst the diesels there’s mix-and-match possibilities, with choices of either two-or four-wheel drive, manual or auto and engine power. King or single cab versions of these arrive a bit later on. The RX has a single-turbo with 120kW and 403Nm while the ST as driven and the top of the range ST-X have the more powerful, twinturbo engine. It delivers 450Nm of torque from 1500 to 2500rpm and 140Kw at 3750rpm. Even with having done so few kilometres (it noticeably freed up during our 220km drive), the ST showed the benefit of the low rpm at which these figures occur, with a smooth, linear delivery of its

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

wide band of torque, which happens just right where the day-today action is. With cold starts there’s characteristic diesel sounds for those on the footpath, but this is pretty well subdued inside. And we liked the engine’s sound under earnest acceleration. The “we” refers to included Bernard E, on board to observe, and tell a joke or two. Accordingly the ute’s sound system was only tested briefly! We liked the 6-speed manual for it feels strong, yet moves easily with shortish throws and has a great spread of ratios, which means it’s easy to both keep the engine in its sweet spot and enjoy corners. The clutch too is light and a pleasure to use. Nissan says this manual can average of 6.5L/100km overall. The switch from 2WD to 4WD high can be done (by a dial on the dash) while travelling at up to 100km/h, but you need to stop to select 4WD low. Because of the ST’s virginal state, we didn’t tackle any really rough stuff, but it was clear it is ready and well equipped for this. In addition to that low down torque and low ratio, there’s the limited slip diff, 217mm ground clearance, approach and departure, angles of 32.5 degrees and 25.9 degrees plus the 450mm wading ability.

Given expectations, and delivery of a car-like on road ride, the tyres on the 16 inch alloys are fairly roadorientated, and likely to be changed if serious mud/real off-roading is your thing. It’s a step up in the on-road handling and ride department, for it delivers a comfortably pliant, wellbalanced ride, even without a load on board. This new suspension smooths out, and was not upset at all by ruts and corrugations, even midcorner. Body movement was well restrained and the steering nicely weighted, suitably precise and with decent feel. Road and wind noise is pretty much banished from the nicely presented cabin, to which access is easy and everything where you expect to find it and then easy to use. Despite not so much in the way of soft touch materials it feels and looks the part, and there’s a reversing camera. We found the cloth-covered front seats to be well-shaped, supportive and comfortable. While there’s no reach adjustment for the steering it’s still easy to get an ideal driving position with plenty of space all round. We decided that it was not unlike driving a new SUV. Those in the rear seat sit high and the seat backs are upright but likely to be comfortable. It seems there’s a little less space therein than previously and it’s better for two adults or three kids. In summary, our all-too-brief time with this new Navara indicated that it has all it takes to meet people’s now-high expectations of a vehicle suitable for both work and/ or play.

A very special Morgan I n this, the 65th year of Plus 4 production, Morgan are pleased to announce the AR Plus 4. Since 1950, the exhilarating Morgan +4 has been a mainstay of Morgan production. To celebrate 65 years of this iconic sports car, a strictly limited run of 50 vehicles will be built; each hand assembled and tuned by Morgan’s experienced AR Motorsport technicians. Each vehicle embraces a powerful Cosworth 2.0 litre engine and offers performance and styling features above and beyond those of a standard Morgan. The ARP4 enhances on-road performance whilst ensuring driver comfort

and usability remains paramount, this enhancement has been achieved in three key areas, performance, styling and usability. The ARP4 would not belong to the AR Motorsport family if it did not offer significantly more performance than a standard Morgan. As such, a large range of upgrades complement the 225bhp Cosworth 2.0 litre. Aesthetically the ARP4 pushes the boundaries of the traditional classic. The ARP4 maintains the use of Morgan’s core materials; ash, aluminium and leather. However, by altering the mix of how these are applied gives an entirely new and exciting impression.

t’s one of the most recognised products on the planet, but the classic Land Rover Defender is fast heading towards extinction, after 67 years as a 4X4 icon. The final deadline for last orders for the Defender was June 30, and production will cease at the Lode Lane production facility in December, allowing the company to re-tool in readiness for the all-new, and only second-generation model. The Defender nameplate has been around since 1983 – before that it was known simply as a Land Rover. In all, over two million have been produced since 1948, when the Series I arrived. It soon became a musthave addition on English farms before spreading to most of the world’s 195 individual countries, where an estimated 75 per cent of Land Rovers and Land Rover Defenders are still running. At one time, exports accounted for over 80 per cent of production, requiring the company to manage a global network of 41 production plants. In its heyday, production peaked at 50,000 in 1971, but over the years, competition from the myriad of more modern and more efficient SUVs has reduced that number to around 14,000 vehicles sold (2014). The end of an era for the iconic Land Rover Defender will make way for a completely new design. That said, with the end of production clearly in sight, sales are up around 15 per cent globally, as enthusiasts and fashionistas alike scramble to secure their very own automotive icon.

Allenton Bowling Club Winter Bowls Results: Aussie Pairs July 26 1st Maurice Reid & Richard Smitheram, 2nd Graham Clarke and Rowan Tonks 3rd Mike Quinn & Janet Kingsbury. A great day in the sun with Bish & Jill overheating in the yellow hats toppled off their perch. August 1 cold miserable day but well battled by all. Regaining their composure wearing the yellow hats again were Bish & Jill. 1st Graeme Bishop and Jill May, 2nd B. Saussey and Murray Palmer, 3rd Bruce White and Noeline Woods. Great to see Bruce back on the green hope the recovery is going well. Two rounds left for this competition and a champagne brekky to finish on the last day. Lucky bowlers enjoy. The triples competition is also going very well and will give you the final results when completed. The Tuesday roll ups have proved to be very popular and some days very hardy souls have been playing. All in all our winter programme has been very successful and the club thank the men and women who have organised all of it from the tea makers to the raffles, players and mainly John & Fay and their team. A huge well done to you all. Not long and we will be back into the bowling season and its shaping up to be a very busy one. Catch you next week.

Allenton Croquet Club The opening of the new season is rapidly approaching. The only thing that doesn’t seem to recognise that is the weather. I don’t think I have experienced a colder winter as this one. It could be my age playing tricks on me. At the end of July we attended a communal lunch at the hotel Ashburton with the Waireka and Methven clubs. With 55 members in attendance it made for a lot of chatter. The quiz which was held after the end of last season was again a success. T hank you to all who attended and made the evening so much fun. The wood raffles have been held during the winter and now that our stock has

Thursday, August 13, 2015 been used we have decided not to get anymore. So all those cold days at New World will be no more. Thank you to New World for allowing us space in the foyer and thank you to the public for supporting us so well over the years. The opening of the Sports club is on September 12 and the official opening of the croquet club is September 14 at 1pm. Anyone who thinks they would like to try Association or golf croquet ring Jill at 3084557.

Ashburton Writers’ Group The August meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently. A quotation had been sent by former member, Kaye from Whanganui “Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you’d left open” by John Barrymore. Rae gave a full report of the Short Story and Poetry Contest, 120 entries had been received and a very successful prize giving ceremony held at the Ashburton District Council. The Assignment for the meeting was to write “If I were a Rose’s Chocolate Which One Would I Be, and Why?” This drew an interesting response, members writing of Dairy Milk, Turkish Delight, Cool Mint, solid Chocolate, Hazelnut Praline Crisp, Orange Cremes and a variety of flavours. The instant exercise was to begin with the words “With silent steps he moves closer”. Members wrote a variety of stories with this theme – interviewer, parcel on bed, school friend, dark office intruder, helpless on bed and noose around neck. The meeting concluded at 2.40pm with the serving of afternoon tea. The assignment for the September meeting is “At the other end of the bar – two characters spot each other. Share your thoughts as they size each other up.” Visitors are welcome to the meetings, please contact Rae at 308 8927.

Fight ‘a risk’ By Melissa Woods Danny Green admits he’s taking a risk trying to prepare for a new opponent just a week out from his comeback fight. The four-time world champion is already putting his reputation on the line by launching a return to the ring aged 42 and after a three-year hiatus. But with his original opponent Slovakian Tamas Kovacs pulling out with a serious neck injury, Green has opted to draft in a new boxer rather than postpone the fight. Looking for someone who was fight-ready, Green’s camp called in Argentine slugger Roberto Bolonti, with Green predicting he would be in for an even tougher fight. Bolonti fought two weeks ago, knocking out his opponent Venezuelan Williams Ocand to win the WBC Latino light heavyweight belt. The 36-year-old’s record is 36-3 and he’s never been knocked out. Green said it was difficult to change tack so late in training

but he felt his experience would see him through. “He’s a completely different style of fight and that’s where the difficulty comes in for myself and my trainer because we’ve got to change the plan we’ve had for the last eight weeks,” Green said. “We’ve been following that to a tee and it’s been going really well with training and sparring but it’s been turned on its head. “I’ve got to go back to what I know best and that’s been a fighter at heart and adjust and adapt.” - AAP

Aorangi Women’s Open Pennants final The Open Pennants final was played on August 10 at Pleasant Point between Mayfield and Maungati (two 9 hole courses). Audrey Bruce presented the financial statement. A letter from NZRC Secretary General Tony Paine thanked the Branch for the ongoing financial support to NZRC over the past year and commended all the members for the work carried out during the year. The document 2020 was presented and suggested that it be looked at in full at a future meeting.

The vacant position of Vice President was filled with Pat O’Brien duly elected. Final details for the September meeting were finalised when friends from the Foundation of the Blind attend our meeting. The Branch raffle dates in September and October were noted with organiser Mary Miles encouraging members to fill the roster. Members were asked to note the dates of November 10, 100 years ago of the first meeting of Red Cross in New Zealand, and November 15th for a Church Service at St Andrew’s Church.

The meeting closed, and Mrs Knox Hampton was welcomed and introduced. She spoke of her trip to Malawi in Africa, to visit her daughter who is a Missionary Doctor there for 13 years with her husband, a Missionary, and their children. Knox gave a wonderful insight into the lives of the people, health issues and her daughter and son-in-law’s humanitarian work. She was thanked by Bev Reveley. In brief Big test for Bunnies South Sydney’s NRL premiership defence faces an acid test as they begin a run of clashes with the competition’s best sides. The formula is simple for the Rabbitohs going into their blockbuster showdown with second-placed North Queensland in Townsville win and stay in the top four, lose and be bumped out. Should they slide to fifth, they face a daunting task to work their way back in with further games against two top four sides in the remaining three weeks of the regular season. After a match with top eight aspirants the Bulldogs they round out the competition with clashes against ladder leaders Brisbane and premiership favourites the Sydney Roosters. - AAP

Play-off spots still undecided While Premier netball’s playoff picture appears to be clear, there’s still the potential for some last-minute movement. Tonight marks the fifth and final round of Premier and senior A netball, and the last game before semi-finals take place next week. As it sits now, Ashburton College and Methven are still perched at the top of the Premier points table – as they have been all season - and are all but booked in for the finals. Up until last week defending Premier champions Celtic rounded out the top-of-the-ta-

ble group, but a loss to Methven dashed their hopes of grabbing the number one spot. Potentially in the running for third are United and Hampstead, who are both sitting on six points. Newest additions to Premier – Rakaia – however, are at the bottom of the table. Tonight, United and Rakaia will face off in the early round, while in the late round Hampstead will be pulling out all the stops in the hope of getting a win over Methven. Meanwhile, Celtic will be also trying to edge up the

points table, and make one last dash for the top spot, in their game against College. In senior A, Collegiate have secured their position at the top of the points table. Slotting in at second and third respectively are Hampstead B and Celtic B. Tonight, the top-of-the-table team will take on Hampstead, in what could make for an interesting match. College Year 9 A will play off against Allenton A – both teams having had only one win each this round. College B will play Celtic B.

With only three more games left in the netball season for the top two grades, Mid Canterbury Netball president Karla Newlands said the netball season this year has so far been an “absolute success”. “I think everybody has really enjoyed playing inside and the move inside,” she said. While she said it was a big decision to change the format of netball in Mid Canterbury, it appears to have paid off and the feedback received has been inherently positive. - By Caitlin Porter

Ferns seek clarification on high penalty count The Silver Ferns will be seeking clarification on umpiring interpretations after being hit hard in the offensive penalty count against Jamaica on Tuesday night. The Ferns were forced to dig deep to overcome the world No. 4 side in their qualification round clash at the Netball World Cup in Sydney, with Jamaica leading by three at halftime on the back of a 16-10 second quarter effort. As well as the scoring threat

of 1.96m shooter Romelda Aiken, the Ferns also had to combat a few technical problems in their shooting end, with Bailey Mes and Maria Tutaia stung for several offensive contacts. While New Zealand coach Waimarama Taumaunu has little tolerance for any penalties, offensive contacts are particularly costly as it is against the run of play and means handing over possession. At one stage Tutaia even had a goal disallowed because Aus-

tralian umpire Sharon Kelly ruled Mes had infringed when jostling for rebound position under the post. With Mes had racking up 10 penalties by halftime - most of those offensive contacts - the Ferns asked for an explanation from the umpires during the break. Taumaunu said it was a case of Mes needing to adjust her body positioning. “We have sought clarification, it would seem [Mes] is leaning

backwards in rebounding position, we’re told.” Considering the work that was being done on Mes under the post by the aggressive Stacian Facey, it seemed odd that simply not standing upright enough would attract the umpire’s whistle. But when asked what she thought of the calls, Taumaunu was diplomatic. “We’ll go back and look at the footage and just clarify.” - NZME

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy sympathises with Willie Mason and Ben Matulino and has questioned the timing of the NRL’s late-season crackdown on shoulder charges. Manly veteran Mason was suspended for two weeks and Warriors prop Ben Matulino for three after the league last week introduced automatic bans on no-arms, shoulder tackles made with force. Mason was further aggrieved that the NRL introduced the rule change only hours before he played. Bellamy yesterday reiterated that shoulder charges were dangerous and needed to be stamped out, but he felt for Mason and Matulino. He said Mason’s tackle was nowhere near as bad as the one by Roosters forward Kane Evans on Sam Kasiano a week earlier. - AAP

‘No culture issues’ Coach Andrew McFadden has moved to allay concerns over a perceived lack of professionalism at the Warriors following comments he made last weekend, about his experiences when he first arrived at the club. McFadden unwittingly sparked a firestorm of debate about the current state of the club when he offered his insights in a wide-ranging radio interview on Sunday, regarding issues that plagued the Warriors when he began his role as assistant to former head coach Matt Elliott in 2013. In explaining the progress the club had made in working to improve their culture, McFadden detailed the unprofessional attitudes and practices that were previously allowed to flourish before changes were made. McFadden refused to expand on those issues and was adamant the examples he raised were in no way representative of the club’s current state. - NZME

Panthers in free-fall They’re two points away from the bottom of the ladder, but Penrith have bristled at the possibility of being handed the wooden spoon at the end of the NRL season. The Panthers have spiralled down the competition table after falling to their fifth straight defeat last weekend, their longest losing streak of the year. And now, less than 12 months after almost reaching the grand final, the side is now in serious contention for some unwanted “silverware”. The 14th-placed Panthers are currently one of three teams on 18 points, just one win above last-placed Newcastle. - AAP

Vito gets his chance By Patrick Mckendry

Victor Vito can impress the selectors at Eden Park on Saturday.

bench, but no specialist lock cover. Predictably, Sam Whitelock returns to the No5 jersey alongside Brodie Retallick, but there is no room on the bench for Luke Romano, who started at ANZ Stadium last weekend. It is a clear indication of how seriously Hansen is taking the threat of the Wallabies’ loose forwards and how the All Blacks will want to play - with pace and precision. It might also suggest the All Blacks will take on the Wallabies’ rushing defence by trying to play in the wide channels. Mobility will be key. Electric wing Nehe MilnerSkudder retains his place after his two-try debut in the 27-19 defeat in Sydney, with Ma’a Nonu in at second-five for the injured Sonny Bill Williams. There is no room for Beauden Barrett in the reserves, with Malakai Fekitoa and Colin

Slade joining halfback TJ Perenara on the bench. Slade’s sole appearance for the All Blacks this year was against Manu Samoa in Apia, where he played 29 minutes off the bench. Hansen has given little away in terms of his World Cup squad of 31, which will be named in Wellington at the end of the month, but for Liam Messam, who was slightly off his game in Johannesburg after starting at No6, it must seem like history is repeating itself. Messam was one of the unlucky ones in 2011 - his final test before the tournament was the defeat to the Boks in Port Elizabeth, with Vito making the cut ahead of him. He has since become a consistent performer for both the All Blacks and the Chiefs but can now do little more to convince Hansen he deserves a place in the squad aiming to

make history by winning backto-back titles. Hansen said: “This game is one of the best challenges we could have. “We pride ourselves on our performance and last week’s wasn’t good enough, so we have been working hard at all areas of our game. “We know we have to be smarter, more accurate and bring more intensity right across the park. “It’s also our last test match in New Zealand for the year so it’s important that we deliver a performance that we can be proud of in front of our home fans. “Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself and the All Blacks to publicly acknowledge Richie’s achievement in becoming the most capped test player in the history of the game. “His performances week in, week out in the black jersey have been nothing short of extraordinary.”

ALL BLACKS All Blacks team to play Australia at Eden Park on Saturday, kick-off 7.35pm is: Ben Smith, Nehe MilnerSkudder, Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Julian Savea, Dan Carter, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw (c), Victor Vito, Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Owen Franks, Dane Coles, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: Keven Mealamu, Wyatt Crockett, Nepo Laulala, Jerome Kaino, Sam Cane, TJ Perenara, Malakai Fekitoa, Colin Slade. - NZME

■ CRICKET

Lehmann apologises for Ashes thumping Coach Darren Lehmann has apologised on behalf of the Australian team for their embarrassing Ashes series thumping in England. He has also sought an end to attacks on soon-to-retire captain Michael Clarke and defended the presence of WAGS (wives and girlfriends) on the tour. “We have been poor, we have been outplayed by a superior opponent, and as coaching staff, players and selectors we fully accept the blame for our losses at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge,” wrote Lehmann on the Cricket Australia website. “On behalf of our team I want to apologise for the man-

In brief

■ RUGBY

Victor Vito has received a golden opportunity to stake a late claim for a place in the All Blacks’ World Cup squad after being selected at blindside flanker for the winner-takes-all Bledisloe Cup test against Australia at Eden Park. Vito has replaced Jerome Kaino in the No6 jersey, with coach Steve Hansen placing his faith in the Hurricanes player to help Richie McCaw, playing in a world record 142nd test, and Kieran Read negate the twin threats of David Pocock and Michael Hooper at the breakdown, a problem area for the All Blacks over the past two tests. In what must be considered a surprise selection, Vito, who has played only 24 minutes for the All Blacks this season - as a replacement in the narrow victory over the Springboks at Ellis Park a fortnight ago will be tasked with matching Kaino’s physical presence on defence and perhaps adding a touch of speed to the loose trio as the All Blacks seek to retain a trophy they have held since 2003. It will be Vito’s first test start since he wore the No8 jersey against Scotland at Murrayfield in November last year. Since making his test debut in 2010, he has started in only 11 of his 27 tests. Hansen has also sprung a surprise with his make-up of the reserves. There are two loose forwards in Kaino and Sam Cane on the

Ashburton Guardian

ner in which we have lost, especially to those tour groups and individual fans who paid to travel to the UK to watch us and to the millions more tuning in at home. “We understand how disappointing the series has been, and I can reassure you we are doing our very best as a group to identify the areas in which we need to improve.” Lehman was responding to stinging criticism after his team crumpled to an innings and 78run defeat inside three days in the fourth Test at Trent Bridge to give England a winning 3-1 lead in a series marked by disastrous Australian batting collapses.

While promising a “full and frank” review, Lehman said he retained great confidence in the future of Australian cricket, the coaching staff, his players and in the young players coming through. Clarke’s influence on the team’s culture has been criticised by some former players since he announced he will retire after the fifth Test at the Oval next week. Lehmann sought an end to it. “Michael deserves the chance to go out with the respect and dignity that he has undoubtedly earned over a fantastic career, and I want to see that career suitably celebrated,” he said. He said Clarke had been

urged to miss this week’s tour match against Northamptonshire. “It’s similar to the approach we took with a number of players after the Lord’s Test, when we thought a break was the best possible preparation for them.” He took strong issue with criticism about WAGS on the tour being a distraction. “As a group, we have always placed a huge importance on family and while we’re happy to cop criticism for the way we bat, bowl, field or prepare I believe it’s unfair to suggest having families with us as a reason for our on-field efforts,” - AAP he said.

Kearns backs ABs The All Blacks will hit the Wallabies like a pack of “mongrel dogs”, according to outspoken Australian great Phil Kearns. Kearns, regarded on this side of the Tasman as the most parochial voice in Australian rubgy, made the shock prediction that the All Blacks would win the Bledisloe Cup decider at Eden Park. “I think New Zealand will come out like complete mad mongrel dogs and will endeavour to teach the Wallabies a lesson,” Kearns said. “I think it’ll be a close run race with the All Blacks just winning.” - NZME

Jonny’s drop goal tops The All Blacks have been involved in some memorable World Cup moments but can’t dislodge Jonny Wilkinson in a recent survey of the top World Cup moments in history. Wilkinson’s winning dropped goal in the 2003 final, scored towards the end of extra time against Australia to give England a 20-17 victory, was judged as the top moment in a survey of more than 4000 fans from 13 rugby nations. - NZME

Shutting out the hype Wallabies captain Stephen Moore appreciates the hype surrounding this weekend’s blockbuster against the All Blacks, but says his team must shut it out if they are to break a 13-year Bledisloe Cup drought. Victory would mean Moore would become the first Australian captain to lift the trophy since George Gregan. “There’s obviously a lot of positivity around the win on the weekend and we want our supporters ... people on the street to be happy about it,” Moore said yesterday. “That’s a real positive for the game in Australia, but that can’t cross over into our thinking when we prepare for that next match and that’s a key point.” - AAP

No Black Caps on TV The Black Caps tour of South Africa begins in the early hours of Saturday morning but it is looking increasingly doubtful that there will be television coverage. The latest Skywatch magazine has no listings for the series. Sky spokeswoman Kirsty Way confirmed that they have not been able to reach an agreement with the agency working on behalf of South African Cricket. “We currently do not have rights but we are in talks and are trying to get them,” she said. It is unlikely another broadcaster will come in to snatch the rights. The stumbling block is understood to be the fee being asked for screening rights. - NZME

More aggression Undone by a short ball at Trent Bridge, David Warner wants to revert to an aggressive approach in the fifth Ashes Test. Warner was dropped twice in Australia’s second innings before being dismissed for 64 from an ungainly pull shot. The opener has endured a frustrating campaign in England, making plenty of starts and four Test half-centuries but no tons. “In one-day cricket, I’m probably looking to hit that over the fence,” Warner said. “I think I have to replicate that in Test cricket.” - AAP

YOUR STARS ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There are some paths you step onto that feel so right, you suspect they are unavoidable. Predestined. The wind carries you chariot style and simultaneously rushes in your face. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): There are people who could potentially resonate with you, like you, love you — if they could only get to you. Put yourself in the public eye in a bigger way. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Investigate the options — there are so many different ways to accomplish your goal. You will be so much more productive than you thought you could be once you find the right system. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Because you live inside your mind, you don’t realise how special it is. That’s why you need people around you like the Pisces and Capricorn you know who remind you who you are. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You respect your deadlines. Not only that, but you appreciate how the limit pushes and concentrates your talents. Today you’ll deliver a powerful presentation and do it on time. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Just because you enjoy it doesn’t mean it’s not work. You’ll sweat and toil and smile. To be tired at the end of a day of enjoyment feels so much better than the kind of exhaustion that comes from a joyless day. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Today’s realisation will come like a wakeup call in a five-star hotel: polite and effective. You’ll get up and do things differently than you did when you were “asleep.” SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your charisma is turned up, and most people can’t help but say yes to your craziest ideas. It will be important to keep “no” people around to keep you grounded and reasonable. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The secret to happiness is simple today. At work, work. When not at work, enjoy your family or have fun doing your own thing — as long as it’s not working! CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Some of the fun will have to do with a live performance. If you’re not up to it, make yourself go anyway. Everything will be vivid and memorable in person, so don’t cheat yourself by staying in with the remote. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Judging by certain comments aimed at you, it might be hard to tell that family members are on your side. The only way to get past this gracefully is to take the high road. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Pay back old debt, or give back by teaching an intern or mentoring a lower-level employee. Your best wins come when you are merely showing others how to be successful.
