Bottles hurled at police By Myles Hume Mid Canterbury’s relatively trouble-free New Year’s Eve has been tarred by a group of teenagers who allegedly threw bottles at police at Lake Camp on Sunday. With reports of well-behaved revellers partying into 2013, police say most Mid Cantabrians kept their celebrations in moderation at bars, restaurants and camping grounds throughout the district. Sergeant Kevin McErlain, of Timaru, confirmed there had been no arrests in Mid and South Canterbury during New Year festivities and praised the public for their behaviour. However, his praise has been marred by “half a dozen” youth who were arrested at Lake Camp on Sunday night after they allegedly hurled bottles towards police who were patrolling the area. Mr McErlain agreed their behaviour was unacceptable and the six youths had been charged and were being dealt with by Ashburton Police. Lake Clearwater Hut Holders’ Association committee member Greg Brake said there were a lot of young people camping at Lake Camp, and he heard bottles smash during what he believed was an alcohol-fuelled rampage by the freedom campers. “We have been saying this for years and the problem has come to a head again this year,” Mr Brake said. He said although behaviour around the area was acceptable from what he saw on New Year’s Eve, Mr Brake believed it was time for the Ashburton District Council to take responsibility and send security to the

area over the Christmas and New Year break to deal with the swarm of teenagers. Mr Brake was also disgusted by the mountains of rubbish the young holidaymakers left in their wake as they made their way home yesterday afternoon, saying it was becoming the norm at this time of year. In Ashburton, Mr McErlain said police had a hassle-free New Year’s night as partygoers kept their celebrations in check. He put it down to vigilant behaviour and the liquor ban areas around Ashburton streets. Ashburton Club and MSA manager Simon McDonnell said the club’s bottle store was heaving throughout the day and patrons filled the bar until 2am as they looked to enter 2013 with a bang. He said it was about 50 per cent busier than the average Saturday night at the club and there was a positive vibe along Burnett Street as people piled into local bars. Rakaia Holiday Park was in full swing on New Year’s Eve, owner Robyn Jackson saying they put on several activities for children and families who were squeezed into the camping ground. Several Ashburton youngsters headed south to celebrate the birth of 2013, where southern police bolstered their presence with 50 more officers on the beat to cope with the sheer number of revellers. Many Mid Cantabrians made the trip to Queenstown and Wanaka, looking to experience the night life where poor weather and swarms of people failed to tarnish the night. Despite the constant drizzle, the Queenstown fireworks display went off without a hitch as thousands of people packed the lakeside wharf, bars and restaurants.

Rangitata Huts put on their annual New Year’s race day in sweltering temperatures yesterday. Keen competitors Theu Newton, 9, (far right) and Bradley Isherwood, 8, (red top) surge to the finish line in a skipping race at the bach settlement.

Vying for Rangitata race day supremacy By Myles Hume You would have been forgiven if you needed a thirst quencher or two at the Rangitata Huts yesterday. The bach settlement held its annual New Year’s race day where 400 holidaymakers lined the freshly mown grass patch to witness the athletic talent of hutholders and campers in the area.

With soaring temperatures in the high 20s, children as young as two and bach owners as old as 60 sprinted, skipped and paced their way towards Rangitata Huts running supremacy, leaving a few of the competitors scrambling for refreshments as they crossed the finish line. Sprint races, sack races, and a 5km run, accompanied by a few beers and soft drinks, were all part of the New

Year’s Day antics. The popular salmon fishing settlement also took a moment to recognise the top young fisherman at the huts last season, gifting the Hayden Riley Memorial Trophy to Ashburton youngster Jake Strachan, 11, who landed a 5.4kg salmon at the river mouth. And odds are he is in the running to win it again next year after pulling out an 11kg salmon recently.

Rangitata Huts Association president Bob Verrall said the weather played its usual part in the event which is growing in size and stature each year. “It’s a great time for everyone to get together with the family and spend time with others,” he said. Today, the Rangitata Huts Association will put on a cricket match for hutholders which, in typical fashion, is expected to be a close encounter.

Jockey’s death felt by trainers By Myles Hume The tragic death of young jockey Ashlee Mundy is rare and unfortunate part of the sport, say Ashburton trainers. Their comments come following the death of the 26-year-old jockey, who fell from Riccarton-based horse Elleaye in race seven at a Kurow Racing Club meet on Sunday. Mundy, who was based on the Gold Coast, fell from the horse after Elleaye’s heels clipped with another horse at the 600-metre mark, send-

By Sam Morton It has been one heck of a year for health in Mid Canterbury. Doctor shortages, flu outbreaks, meningitis scares and health hub innovations. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Add to that multiple doctor resignations in Rakaia, Ashburton Hospital angling to become the South Island training hub for rural specialists, a severe lack of funding on all health fronts and the lethal blow dealt earlier this year, resulting in the loss of the district’s surgical services. It would be fair to say, the health industry has endured one longwinded rollercoaster. However, it hasn’t been all doom and gloom for the public sector. Exciting developments and an extreme likelihood of a health hub being established in Ashburton at some stage in the future creates hope and community interest. Think back also to that glorious mobile surgical bus that comes to town once every five weeks relieving patients, across a variety of procedures – quite simply considered by some as the saviour of Mid Canterbury. Strong heart must surely be taken in the positive and exciting future of Ashburton Hospital too, with confirmation coming a number of times that revamp plans are being considered in detail. Operations manager Mark Newsome has always maintained the hospital will restore its surgical services in some shape or form, so it is now simply an inevitable case of when. And of course like all GPs in Mid Canterbury, it is no secret dentists have felt the pressure this year. Long hours has naturally become a prominent part of the territory, with most dentists hosting visits long after the 5pm chime. It is fair to say, life after the Christchurch earthquakes has resulted in a soaring demand for health services in Mid Canterbury and until reinforcements arrive, it

with the “freak accident”. “The point of the matter is nothing good in life is ever talked about, it’s always about the bad stuff. We don’t have many accidents, these are good professionals riding huge horses and they are doing a wonderful job – this doesn’t happen very often, thank God. “It’s always a shock when someone is hurt and we don’t like to see it, we may be competitive but racing is a close-knit community.” Mr McKay said Mundy was full of potential and often told his daughters to watch how “kindly” she rode

during races. He said it was rare for fatal accidents to occur on the track, pointing out race car drivers and many other sportspeople put themselves on the line all the time. Mr McKay was at a race meet in Waikouaiti yesterday, where Mundy’s mother left a touching message for riders, many wearing black arm bands for the seventh race. “Her mother came and spoke and told them that Ashlee would have wanted them to ride.” Mundy’s funeral will be held in Westport on Friday.

• Posters confuse Ashburton parents have been concerned after posters appeared around the district about a five-year-old girl that has been allegedly “taken” from Oxford. Inquiries by the Guardian found Rangiora Police are not searching for the girl, and it is understood it is a domestic dispute. The posters are scattered around Ashburton Domain and around the playground, with many parents saying they were confused by the handwritten posters.

• Scrub fire Firefighters were called to a scrub fire in Hinds yesterday morning. The Hinds Fire Brigade were called to the vegetation fire about 10am on Junction Road.

• Gang arrests Seven gang members have been arrested following an all-in brawl involving a meat cleaver, hammer and axe in Hastings yesterday. At about 1.30pm police responded to multiple calls from concerned residents when the fight, involving up to 10 people, began on the intersection of Eastbourne St and Willow Park Rd. The brawl was still in progress when police arrived. Seven men aged between 15 and 24 were arrested and have been charged with unlawful assembly and possession of offensive weapons. A number of weapons including hammers, meat cleavers, and an axe were used. - APNZ

may be that way for some time yet. Although more people in the community logically turns over more money for the local economy, surely our doctors and other health professionals can only take so much. Mid Canterbury GP spokesperson Chris Ryan has pointed out the district’s GPs are ageing and has on many occasions in 2012, sounded an SOS call to their city counterparts. Between them and limited locum cover, the GPs are doing and will continue to do a stellar job catering for thousands in our community, but as Dr Ryan says, new blood needs to be attracted to Mid Canterbury – and fast. But how can a relatively small provincial township possibly compete with the big bucks of Australia? Short answer – it can’t. However the lifestyle is beginning to be noticed by many and could possibly start turning heads among the final year medical students, which should be a major intention. Dr Ryan has also suggested establishing incentives, possibly study scholarships or financial benefits. Perhaps balancing or even removing the demon of 24/7 after-hours care could be the answer? This could be a major project to look at next year. On reflection, 2012 hasn’t been the smoothest of years for anyone, least of all the health sector, but as the saying goes, it’s now all in the past, so bring on the future. Here’s to good health in 2013 cheers!

• Fees up Prescription fees jumped from $3 to $5 a script yesterday. In last year’s Budget the Government announced it would make the first increase in prescription costs in 20 years, to fund reinvestment in the health sector in lean economic times. The Medical Association welcomed the move, saying the funding would reduce waiting times for cancer treatment and operations. However Wellington GP Nikki Turner says the price hike could stop people from picking up medication. - APNZ

Top five issues:

• Meningitis scares/major flu outbreak • Rakaia resignations • Surgical services lost (surgical bus to the rescue) • GPs working flat out – massive shortage/reinforcements needed • Health hub innovation – a glimpse of the future (perhaps)

Filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson has paid tribute to an Oscar-award winning sound editor who drowned in the Waiohine River in the Wairarapa on the weekend. Michael Alexander Hopkins was caught in a flash flood on Sunday while rafting with his wife and another man. He drowned when he was thrown from his raft into a fast-flowing eddie. The 53-year-old, from Greytown, had worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest films and won Academy Awards for his work on Sir Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong. He was also nominated for five BAFTA awards. Sir Peter said he and his fellow producers were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Mr Hopkins’ death. He said many actors, directors, production and post production crew who were lucky enough to work with him would miss him deeply.

Under Mr Hopkins’ guidance New Zealand became recognised as one of the leading hubs of post production sound in the world, Sir Peter said. Mr Hopkins was genuine, caring and warm hearted with a great sense of humour. Their collaboration dated from Braindead in 1992. Film editor and producer Jamie Selkirk, who also won an Oscar for his work on Lord of the Rings, said he employed Mr Hopkins when he was a school leaver to run errands in his production company. But he quickly proved his aptitude in the pioneering area of cinematic sound. Greytown man Bruce Slater, who was an experienced boatie and was called to the river at about 4pm Sunday told APNZ the group were “so unlucky”. “They had lifejackets, helmets, and everything and if they’d been a half an hour or hour earlier they would have got through before the flood.” - APNZ by David Fletcher

Police investigate death in Panmure Police are appealing to members of the public for information on a man who was killed in Auckland early yesterday. A homicide investigation was launched after a 27-year-old was found dead on Pilkington Road in Panmure. Detective Inspector Mark Benefield said a woman phoned the police about 4am after finding the man on the street. “We have spoken to a woman ... who initially saw the deceased and went to his assistance, but he was deceased at the time.” Mr Benefield said police were asking any members of the public who may have seen or heard anything to contact them. The man is believed to have recently lived in Papatoetoe, but police are yet to formally identify him and locate his next of kin. His body is still at the scene, and

‘It’s usually a quiet street. Nothing like this has really happened here’ - Daniel Taorei police have cordoned off an area of Pilkington Road for their investigation. Mr Benefield confirmed a weapon was used in the incident but said police are yet to find it. Several New Year’s Eve parties took place on the street on Monday night, but it is unclear whether the 27-year-old had attended one of them, he said. “We’re doing an area canvas [and] speaking to neighbours and members of the public.” Pilkington street resident Daniel Taorei told APNZ he woke up from shouting at around 4am.

“I looked out the window and saw a fella [sic] walk across the road and just collapse.” The people who live in the house outside where the body was found are currently away, Mr Taorei said. “It’s usually a quiet street. Nothing like this has really happened here.” Mr Taorei has lived in Pilkington Road for three years, and said he had not spoken to anyone who knew the the 27-year-old. Police expected to remove the body from the scene late yesterday. - APNZ

By Sam Morton Kate Wootton has officially passed her undergraduate degree, but still has so much more to achieve. This year has been a rollercoaster of a year for most, but for Kate, 2012 has been anything but. Although when she reflects on the year that was, she describes her 12 months as surreal. And looking back at some of her feats, a surreal experience it has surely been. The Ashburton woman has traipsed through Africa, mingled with some of the world’s most talented young explorers, trekked through the Skeleton Coast and swam with sharks. In April, Kate was successfully selected for the first stage of an Africa Expedition. Hundreds of applicants applied, but only a handful were given the green light for the first trial camp in Switzerland, before she was then chosen as one of only nine to experience Africa with world renowned explorer, Mike Horn. Kate recalls many highlights during the expedition, but particularly remembers being dropped deep into the ocean in a large steel cage, surrounded by great white sharks. She knew she was safe behind the bars, she couldn’t help but feel a slight fear creep in when she saw the sheer size of the deadly marine mammals only an arm’s length away. But the sharks weren’t the only confrontations she had to worry about. Hailing from little old Ashburton, she was ill-prepared for the reality of scorpions and snakes that make up the great wilderness of the outbacks in Africa. “We knew that was the case out there, but thankfully we didn’t have any incidents. That was quite a relief really,” she said. Trekking more than 140kms through desert, climbing Table Mountain overlooking the entire city of Cape Town, carrying out extensive press conferences and rafting through fast-flowing rapids meant there was never a dull moment on her three-week adventure. Summarising her trip, Kate described it as incredible. “You can’t get a better teacher than nature, everything is in place and the only thing out of place is us really,” Kate said. “We learnt that life isn’t all about difficult moments though, after you get through the difficulty you reach the calm and you can enjoy each

In fact, she is already gearing up for this year where she has decided to complete her Masters. But for now, all that can wait as she is looking forward to enjoying a well earned summer break in Ashburton. “I’m probably going to head south on a road trip and do some camping and tramping. “I’m going to spend some time see-

So is there any more travel left on the cards for Kate? “Probably not for a while, I’ve heard the Masters is going to be full-on, so it will take quite a bit of my attention and focus for some time. “I wouldn’t say no though, I certainly intend to see more of the world,” she said. “It’s been a very busy year.”

New year - a time for emotions, resolutions T

he start of the New Year can have mixed emotions for many of us. Some may start with a sore head and for them their first New Year’s resolution will be not to indulge so much in 2013. The start of the year for many is the opportunity to start anew with a clean slate. Based on what we did well in the past year, but especially what did not go so well in our lives, we often make ourselves promises to try better. Some even set themselves real targets and most of those will involve their own health and bodies, and pledges of increased exercise and trips to the gym. For the owners of fitness gyms, January must be one of the better months as many will sign up with the best intentions. How long they last is often the big question and many of the new gym memberships will barely get used as the year progresses.

EVERYTHING FOR YOUR HOME

Smokers seek help to quit Quitline was inundated yesterday with calls from smokers seeking a fresh start to the new year. Spokesman Bruce Bassett said more than 400 smokers had been in contact throughout the day. About 200 people had called into the service and a similar number had been in touch via email and blog, he said. And the online messages were also being received. “Clearly New Year’s resolutions and the [tobacco] tax increase are the things that motivate people to change.” Mr Bassett said the organisation employed extra staff to cope over the holiday period, which is their busiest time of the year. On a normal Tuesday, Quitline would probably receive only a third of the

calls, messages and sign-ups received yesterday, he said. Staff are bracing themselves for Thursday - the first official day back at work after the New Year’s period. That is the busiest day they experience, Mr Bassett said. “People get back to work and want to make a new start.” Between 8000 and 10,000 people are expected to contact Quitline this month. Last year, 8222 people signed up to Quitline in January, compared to 9383 in January 2011. In 2010, only 4966 registered throughout January. Quitline communications manager Jane MacPherson said the increase between 2010 and 2011 was likely due to the tobacco tax hikes. “There was no tax increase in 2010.”

Yesterday also marked the first of four annual tobacco tax increases. Each year the tax will rise by 10 per cent. Treasury previously said the hikes would result in a packet of 20 cigarettes costing about $20 by 2016. Smokers trying to come clean this year will probably find the first six months the most challenging, Ms MacPherson said. Figures show about one-in-five Quitline clients are successful after 12 months. At six months, the quit rate is 24.2 per cent. “That tells us it’s a really low rate of relapse between six and 12 months,” Ms MacPherson said. About 62,500 people signed up with the Quitline service last year, she said. Of that, 15,000 are still smoke-free.

Poll shows big support for lowering drink-drive limit Nearly two-thirds of New Zealanders support lowering the drink-drive limit although the Government says it won’t act until more research is carried out. A Herald-DigiPoll summer survey found 65 per cent backing for cutting the limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg. Research shows an average-sized adult male can consume about six alcoholic drinks in 90 minutes before hitting the current limit. The limit has been dubbed “legal drink driving” by critics, but the Government has said it will not decide on lowering it until more research is complete. It expects to receive data from the Ministry of Transport and a driver-simulation study from Waikato University next year. Yesterday, national road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths said he backed a reduction. Drivers at or around the current limit were too intoxicated to drive safely, and

dropping the limit would not overly restrict most people, he said. “For most people two drinks is well under [50mg]. It’s not about stopping people enjoying a drink, it’s about reducing the risk to everyone.” Mr Griffiths said Ministry of Transport research showed that at the current limit, drivers aged over 30 were about 16 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than if they were sober. At 50mg, a fatal crash is 5.8 times more likely. Labour’s spokesman for transport safety, Iain Lees-Galloway, said the poll result was unsurprising. “The law as it currently is allows for legal drunk driving ... New Zealanders appreciate that, and want to see the law changed.” Mr Lees-Galloway said New Zealand’s limit was among the highest in the world. Australia, France and Germany were among countries that had a limit of 50mg. He said research showed a marked

decrease in the number of very drunk drivers in Australia after the limit was dropped to 50mg there. “Once they get over [50mg], they are actually too drunk to make a decision about whether or not they are sober enough to drive.” Statistics recently released to the Herald on Sunday by the Ministry of Transport show that in the past four years, 20 people have been killed in road accidents involving drinking drivers just below the legal limit. However, University of Canterbury senior lecturer Eric Crampton - who is researching the effects of a drop in limit - said further analysis was needed. Sober people had serious accidents too, he said, and it was necessary to determine how many people were driving within the 50mg-80mg range, not just the number of crashes. The Government would need to weigh the benefits of reducing the drink-drive limit with any resulting costs. - APNZ

HAPPY NEW YEAR

TAURUS (Apr 21st May 21st) Mercury and Neptune make a nice link for you and as the reality of the new dawn of 2013 bites, this can help you to inject your mindset with a more ethereal take. If you have had a particularly inspiring holiday period, this aspect can help you by keeping the memories burning brightly like embers within you. A constructive conversation can also cheer you.

GEMINI (May 22nd Jun 21st) The Moon is in Virgo once more and though this squares your sign, you are both ruled by Mercury and both Mutable - in other words, are able to be flexible. This location for the Moon may see you quite happy to get back to some domestic normality. If things have slipped in terms of the chores, settling down to them could prove to be surprisingly therapeutic.

CANCER (Jun 22nd - Jul 23rd) Saturn and Pluto stay in a progressive angle for you for the next four months. If you have talents you want to harness and are keen to promote to others, this will help. Equally, a productive partnership may figure brightly. If you need to think or talk about such plans today, you can do so with some precision, with your feet rooted to the ground.

LEO (Jul 24th - Aug 23rd) If you find yourself counting the financial cost of the holiday period today, it may not be a surprise to you. Of course you won’t be alone, but where you can differ is that how you spend money from now probably needs to give some kind of trade-off. This can be from getting your home warmer and more comfortable or from feeling you are within budget.

VIRGO (Aug 24th Sep 23rd) The Moon is in your sign once more today and when this occurs it boosts that natural ‘helper’ side of your nature. Yet look to your own needs first and foremost. If you get too caught up in virtue or at least people pleasing, you may soon feel on edge. In fact, don’t overload yourself with anything too onerous today if you can help it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

LIBRA (Sep 24th Oct 23rd) If you are still away from work, you might find your mind wandering. This may see you think about what the holiday season has meant to you, and if there were a few bumps along the way you may need to mull these over. Then again, that side of you which can be attentive may see you reach out to someone who is less connected to others.

SCORPIO (Oct 24th - Nov 22nd) You may find yourself catching up with friends today. If you are still finding your feet in this New Year, some of the resolutions that they are making can be inspiring to you and vice versa. A very solid angle between Saturn in your sign and Pluto, your co-ruler, suggests that some key parts of your world, and even thinking, may be slowly but surely evolving.

Try to take this in your stride for many of us will be trying to get grounded and apply ourselves to the nitty-gritty of life. You may find that there will be greater interaction with a parent, a boss or conversely someone younger. Use a touch of your wit to lighten things.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd - Jan 20th) You more than most can comprehend the realities of life and you can use this side of yourself to settle down to any tasks or chores that confront you. Or can you? The Moon could make you a tad restless or reconnect you to any of the great ideas you heard over the holiday. With Neptune also to the fore, don’t be slow to access your imagination.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st - Feb 19th) You can feel positive today and keen to get things done, and your natural gift for sensing what’s what can help you in several parts of life. Why? Well, you may not take things at face value but the upside of this is that you can see opportunities that others fail to see. Gulls thrive at busy river nesting site By Susan Sandys Black billed gulls on the Ashburton River are finishing off a highly successful breeding season. Ashburton Forest and Bird member Don Geddes said it was great to see a high survival rate among chicks, particularly following a “sick” attack on a population of the same species on the Ashley River. An ornithologist visiting the Ashley River found 51 black billed gull chicks stoned to death earlier this week. “You have to wonder what is wrong with our society that people get some form of pleasure out of that,” Mr Geddes said. He said it was great to see the success of the breeding population on the Ashburton River however, where 9000 of the rare gulls were nesting in the vicinity of the State Highway 1 bridge. They had also suffered an attack, when a four-wheel-drive motorist went onto the river and crushed eggs in November. Mr Geddes said they had come through that well and now most of the chicks in the area had fledged. This meant they could now fly.

However they are still being cared for by their parents and it is important to keep away from the colony as it gradually disperses. Over the coming summer, autumn and winter months the gulls will visit Canterbury estuaries, river mouths and their feeding grounds before returning to the river to breed next spring. Mr Geddes said considering there was such a high population of birds there, it would probably be the most successful breeding season at the State Highway 1 site in years. “I think it’s good they have been A fledgling black billed gull on the Ashburton River this week seeks food from its mother. so successful this year.” Mr Geddes said with their nesting site being in such a public location it had hopefully given Ashburton residents an opportunity to see the rare species in their own back yard. “They are not just sea gulls, they are only found in New Zealand. They are a very rare species and have the same protection status as Kiwis.” A smaller colony of the same spefrom the team at SuperValue cies is still nesting further downstream, alongside black fronted terns, and it is important people keep away from any areas of the river with nesting birds in the summer months.

Heavy rain ahead for holidaymakers South Island holidaymakers are being warned to keep a close watch on rising river and lake levels, with heavy rain expected to fall on an already sodden western South Island today. Heavy rain has already forced the closure of the Milford Track in Fiordland. Department of Conservation spokesman Ross Kerr said then track’s accommodation for independent walkers was full, and those who stayed in huts on Monday night night spent another night in them last night. No new walkers started the trail yesterday. It was hoped that the weather would clear enough today so that walkers could be helicoptered to safe parts of the track. Other walking tracks in the area remained open. MetService has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain around the west of the South

Island until late today, with significant spillover into the Otago and Canterbury headwaters. Environment Canterbury said up to 400mm of rain was expected along the Alpine Divide. The heavy rainfall could cause the major alpine rivers of Canterbury to rise to potentially dangerous levels quickly. “People are strongly advised to stay well clear of the beds of these rivers until the weekend. “Even with the rain predicted to fall mostly in the mountains, it is still vitally important that people on the plains also stay alert, even if the weather is fine, as the rivers can still become unsafe as flood waters travels rapidly downstream,” a statement from Environment Canterbury said. MetService said a rainfall warning had also been extended to the ranges of Buller and north-west Nelson. About 120mm of rain could fall in the region. - APNZ

Tweet beat draws 45,000 followers $ 99 12 The Bay of Plenty police were joined on the beat by 45,000 people on Twitter for for a virtual ridealong during New Year policing. The patrol ran from 7pm to 2am providing a real time snapshot of policing across Western Bay and advice to encourage safe celebrations. The most retweeted event of the night was a car that struck a house, knocked down a tree and landed on its roof in Papamoa. Miraculously the driver and his passenger walked away with relatively minor injuries. Alcohol was believed to have been a factor, Area Commander Inspector Clifford Paxton said. The majority of the other incidents attended by the ‘Tweet Beat’ were alcohol-related such as drinkdriving and disorder. “It was a first for us so we had no idea how much interest we would

get and were quite amazed by the response,” Mr Paxton said. “Throughout the entire shift we received a constant flow of messages commenting on the patrol and showing their support for the policing operation. “Policing can be a thankless task so it was good for the staff who were working last night to hear the positive feedback from the Twitter community.” Tweets came from as far afield as the Netherlands. Some were clearly local with comments such as “we have the coolest police in the country” and others acknowledged the tough job that the police have such as “you guys are brilliant, brave AS”. “Tonight has proved how useful a tool social media can be for communication and we would certainly consider more virtual patrols in the future,” Mr Paxton said. - APNZ

Road toll dropping Last year New Zealand recorded its second lowest road toll in 50 years, with the deaths of young people significantly stemmed, police say. The provisional road toll for 2012 is 306 - slightly higher then the previous year’s record low of 284 deaths. Police figures showed fewer drivers were dying on the roads, dropping from 150 in 2011 to 135 last year. Despite this, the number of fatal crashes had increased, up from 259 in 2011 to 265 last year. National manager of Road Policing Superintendent Carey Griffiths said overall figures showed a downward

trend. “While low results are to be celebrated, this is still too many New Zealanders needlessly dying,” he said. A breakdown also showed more passengers died - from 61 in 2011 to 80 in the past year. “Of particular note is the reduced fatalities in the 15-24 year-old age group last year, which at 65 was significantly lower than 82 in 2011,” Mr Griffiths said. “This is the lowest since records were kept on age groups. “Police and our road safety partners have put a significant focus on young drivers, with an increased driving age and a zero blood alcohol limit.” - APNZ

against the bus driver, a 54-year-old Vancouver, British Columbia, man who was among the injured. He has spoken with investigators, State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said. The bus was traveling westbound in the left lane of Interstate 84 when it hit a concrete barrier, veered across both westbound lanes and plunged through the guardrail and down the embankment, Hastings said. Police haven’t

determined how fast the bus was going when it struck the centre barrier. The crash occurred near a spot on the interstate called Deadman Pass, at the top of a steep, 11km descent from the Blue Mountains. That section of road is so notorious that state transportation officials published a warning for truck drivers saying it has “some of the most changeable and severe weather conditions in the Northwest.” - AP

Colorado cannabis clubs Recreational marijuana clubs have opened in Colorado, less than a month after the state governor signed into law a constitutional amendment allowing recreational pot use. With a reggae soundtrack and flashing disco-style lights, Club 64 in an industrial area just north of downtown Denver opened Monday afternoon, with some 200 people signed up. The opening came less than 24 hours after club organizers announced they would charge a $29.99 admission price for the bring-your-own pot club. Two Colorado clubs were believed to be the first legal pot dens in the US. New Club 64 members were firing up bongs and exchanging hugs before the sun

set Monday, and they also planned to ring in the New Year together. “Look at this!” an excited Chloe Villano exclaimed as the club she created over the weekend opened. “We were so scared because we didn’t want it to be crazy. But this is crazy! People want this.” Colorado’s marijuana amendment prohibits public consumption, and smoke-free laws also appear to ban indoor smokeouts. But Club 64 attorney Robert Corry said private pot dens are permissible because marijuana isn’t sold, nor is it food or drink. Villano, the club owner, said the pot club would meet monthly at different locations, with the $29.99 membership fee good for only one event. - AP

Blood clot in Clinton’s head Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton developed a blood clot in her head but did not suffer a stroke or neurological damage, her doctors say. They say they are confident that she will make a full recovery. In a statement that revealed the location of the clot, Clinton’s doctors said it is in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. She is being treated with blood thinners to help dissolve the clot, the doctors said, and she will be released once the medication dose has been established. Clinton, 65, is making excellent progress and is in good spirits, Dr. Lisa Bardack

of the Mt. Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said. Clinton, who was spending a second day at a New York hospital, developed the clot after suffering a concussion earlier in December. She had fainted, fallen and struck her head at home while battling a stomach virus, her spokesman said. She has not been seen publicly since December 7. Doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam on the concussion. She was admitted to New YorkPresbyterian Hospital. - AP

India’s army and navy canceled New Year’s celebrations out of respect for a New Delhi student whose gang-rape and murder has set off an impassioned debate about what the nation needs to do to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. Protesters and politicians have called for tougher rape laws, major police reforms and a transformation in the way the country treats its women. “To change a society as conservative, traditional and patriarchal as ours, we will have a long haul,” said Ranjana Kumari,

director of the Center for Social Research. “It will take some time, but certainly there is a beginning.” The country remained in mourning yesterday, two days after the 23-year-old physiotherapy student died from her internal wounds in the Singapore hospital where she had been sent for emergency treatment. Six men have been arrested and charged with murder in the December 16 attack on a New Delhi bus. They face the death penalty if convicted, police said. - AP

• Fiscal rescue The White House reached a New Year’s Eve accord with Senate Republicans yesterday to block acrossthe-board tax increases and spending cuts in government programs due to take effect at midnight, according to administration and Senate Democratic officials. Without legislation, economists in and out of government had warned of a possible new recession and spike in unemployment if the economy were allowed to fall over the so-called fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts. Under the deal, taxes would remain steady for the middle class and rise at incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples — levels higher than President Barack Obama had campaigned for in his successful drive for a second term in office. - AAP

• Record texting A record-breaking 223 million text messages are estimated to have beeped and buzzed their way across Australia as the nation marked the start of 2013 in truly digital style. Major telcos reported that their networks held up well under surging demand for text messaging and social media sites during new year celebrations, with just before midnight to 1am on January 1 the peak time for mobile phone use. “Given the demand for mobile use in Sydney, the performance of our mobile network was pleasing,” a Telstra spokesman told AAP on Tuesday. Telstra was expecting 61 million text messages to be sent across its network over the new year period - a 17 per cent increase on last year. - AAP

Emergency personnel respond to the scene of a multiple-fatality accident after a tour bus careened through a guardrail along an icy highway and fell several hundred feet down a steep embankment.

Survivors of a bus crash that killed nine people on a partly icy section of interstate in rural Eastern Oregon yesterday say that some passengers were thrown from the vehicle through broken windows after it skidded out of control, smashed through a guardrail and plummeted 60 metres down an embankment. When the tour bus came to a rest, terrified passengers, most of them Koreans, looked around for their loved ones. “Some mothers screamed to find their son or daughter,” said Jaemin Seo, a 23-year-old exchange student from Suwon, South Korea, studying in Vancouver, British Columbia. The charter bus, owned by a British Columbia company, crashed Sunday just east of Pendleton while returning to Canada from Las Vegas — one of the stops on a nine-day western tour. Aboard were 48 people, some of them exchange students from South Korea. Some passengers were from British Columbia, and some from Washington state. Investigators say there also may have been a Japanese passenger and one from Taiwan, and they’re working with consular officials from those nations to identify them. The survivors, who range in age from 7 to 74, were sent to 10 hospitals in Oregon, Washington state and Idaho. At least 10 were released Monday, police said. Authorities said it could be a month or more before investigators and prosecutors decide whether to file any charges

he first bright red strawberry heralds the start of the summer berry season. And while the first crop of berries is over, strawberries will be back again with a vengeance this month as plants reward growers with a second crop. While they take a lot of beating eaten fresh from the plant, or with cream, strawberries also lend themselves to being used in dishes sweet and savoury.

Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies. Stephen McKernan Director–General of Health This information is advisory only and is required to be published on a six-monthly basis. If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact the water services department. A GUTHRIE Water Services manager

Radwanska breezes into Auckland second round Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska has breezed into the second round of the ASB Classic tennis tournament with a straight-sets win over former champion Greta Arn. Radwanska, the Polish world No.4, defeated her Hungarian opponent 6-2 6-2 in 75 minutes in Auckland yesterday. Arn, the 2011 champion, had a reprieve into the main draw after losing her final qualifying match on Monday. The withdrawal of Radwanska’s original opponent, Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, because of a wrist injury allowed Arn in as the “lucky loser”. But she was outclassed by

Radwanska, who showed precision and variety of shot to move her around court. Two breaks of serve gave Radwanska the opening set. The pair traded breaks early in the second, before Radwanska broke again in a marathon game five, which ended with an Arn double fault. Radwanska broke once more in game seven and then served out the match with an ace. In the next round, she will meet unseeded Romanian Simona Halep, against whom she has a 2-0 record. Earlier, the tournament lost a third seed with the retirement of Romanian Sorana Cirstea because of a viral illness.

Cirstea, the fifth seed, had dropped the first set to Britain’s Heather Watson 6-3 when she retired. An interested spectator was Judy Murray, the British Fed Cup captain and mother of men’s world No.3 Andy Murray. On day one, defending champion and fourth seed Zhang Jie of China and American seventh seed Christina McHale were both upset. In other first-round matches on Tuesday, No.6 seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan beat Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-3 6-2, while unseeded Swiss Romina Oprandi downed Thai qualifier Nudnida Luangnam 6-0 6-2. - AAP

Team confident Clarke will play test By Ben Horne

Opener Ed Cowan says Australia are preparing for the third test against Sri Lanka believing captain Michael Clarke is certain to play. Clarke has been troubled by a hamstring injury since the first test in Hobart and plugged on to play the second test in Melbourne last week, scoring a century. Clarke was put through his paces by physio Alex Kountouris at the SCG yesterday, two days out from the Sydney test, and seemed to have

no problem completing the fitness session which included running and walking exercises. Cowan was confident Clarke would lead the team into battle as Australia attempt to secure a clean-sweep of the series and send Mike Hussey into test retirement a winner. “I think everyone is assuming Michael’s playing,” said Cowan. “He’s certainly much better than he was two days out from the Melbourne Test and we saw what happened there so I think he’s right to go mentally. “Physically I imagine he’ll get up for the test match and we saw just

another example of mind over matter or mind over body last test when he batted so beautifully but didn’t look inhibited in any way. “It was a pretty inspirational innings I thought considering where he’d come from.” Cowan admitted there was a risk Australia could let their guard slip leading into a dead-rubber. However, the left-hander says they were desperate to avoid complacency and had discussed that as a team. “We have spoken at some length about our determination to make sure we win this series 3-0,” he said. - AAP

Racing fields P11, 13 | Radwanska into second round P13

turns at No 1 but there’s a determination to make this tenure in possession of the International Cricket Council’s gold and silver mace longer than the last, short period. “Now there’s a real sense of care, there’s an amazing team spirit and we’re looking forward to what’s lying ahead in 2013. “We believe if we can come through this year with very solid performances we have a chance to dominate for the next four or five years around the world.” It’s a big call, but there’s no shortage of self-belief in the South African camp. They have the world’s best pace attack in Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander, a strong and deep batting lineup and catch and field like demons. There is a desire to start as they mean to carry on, which could be grim news for New Zealand. The last time they played at Cape Town, de Villiers made 160 not out, Jacques Kallis 224 and Alviro Peterson 109. “We play really well here,” de Villiers said. “There is a good sense of confidence when we play at Newlands. It’s almost like we free up and express our skills. “But it’s our first [test] game in a while so we really have to pull together. It’s important to get that glue and do the basics well in the first two days.” Which sounds a lot like getting straight back down to business. - APNZ

By David Leggat South Africa have New Zealand in their sights as a means of starting what they hope could extend into a top-of-the-world reign for years to come. They’ll start the New Year as the world’s No 1 test side on the back of their 2-0 series win in England a few months ago and they reinforced that with their recent 1-0 series win over Australia. Even a drawn series against No 8-ranked New Zealand will be enough to keep Graeme Smith’s team top of the pile. But that outcome is not part of the plan. The first test starting tomorrow is South Africa’s first at home since beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets, also at Newlands, last January. Since then, they have won away series against New Zealand, England and Australia – nine tests producing four wins and five draws. After New Zealand, they host Pakistan in February-March, travel to Sri Lanka and have an away series against Pakistan, most likely in the United Arab Emirates, and are home to India next season. That’s likely to total 11 tests. “We sat down and looked at everything that’s happened in the last year, what’s coming up this year, what we can achieve and where we want to go,” senior batsman AB de Villiers said. “Last time we got to the No 1 spot we threw it away like it didn’t matter [in 2009].” India and England have had

Good turnout to cycling event

Today’s sports trivia question Who joined Rob Waddell in the double sculls for the Beijing Olympics?

Ashburton youngster Luke Rhodes gained quite a following as he signed up as the youngest rider at the New Year’s Day meeting at the Tinwald Velodrome yesterday. The five-year-old went toe-to-toe with 30 other keen riders, who competed in various age group races throughout the day. Race organiser Donald Sutton said the meet was in its fourth year after it was created to allow riders to keep up their fitness over the summer break. Riders from as far as Invercargill competed, along with Sarah Maw of Melbourne, who was on holiday in the area and decided to don the lycra. Ashburton riders Josh Connor and Sam Cullimore featured highly in their respective races, while Christchurch’s Andrew Ward showed his cycling strength at the Tinwald track.

McCullum expected to be the gambler By David Leggat New Zealand’s 28th test captain steps out for his first toss in charge of the national side tomorrow night. So what qualities will Brendon McCullum, in his 71st test, bring to the role? The expectation is he’ll be prepared to gamble, won’t let situations drift, and will try to approach the job with a positive mindset. Whether that is a recipe to make a strong fist of the job, and lift New Zealand’s overall situation as eighth-best test nation out of nine, remains to be seen. But McCullum is likely to want to try to do things his way, starting with the biggest challenge in the game, against the world’s best side in their back yard. In a sense, McCullum, who replaced Ross Taylor at the end of New Zealand’s tour of Sri Lanka last month, has little to lose. Which is not to say events in this potentially most gruelling of series won’t go into the overall end-of-summer assessment of his

performance in the job. In fact, it might give McCullum encouragement to take some risks, on the basis that going through the motions isn’t going to be anything like enough to put any sort of squeeze on the South Africans. Experienced allrounder James Franklin has played all but two of his 30 tests alongside McCullum. “He’s quite aggressive with his field placements and brand of cricket,” Franklin said. “I don’t think with Brendon you’re always going to get run-of-the-mill field placings. He’s very detailed with bowlers on different placements. He’s always looking to try things out just to break up the norm. “We all know the way he plays himself. He likes to impose himself on the opposition. He’s got his own brand of playing cricket and I think he certainly brings that to the captaincy.” McCullum is squaring off against the most experienced captain in test history, Graeme Smith, who has overseen 45 victories in 97 matches in charge.

Franklin insists that won’t faze the new guy at the helm. It’s also worth remembering McCullum’s manager is Stephen Fleming, who led New Zealand in more tests than anyone, and who successfully got under Smith’s skin when they clashed in New Zealand in 2004. “He won’t be daunted by coming up against Smith,” said Franklin. “Smith has got a hell of a record but what Brendon will worry about is the team and trying to get best out of us in terms getting into a position to win.” New Zealand’s most successful test captains • Geoff Howarth (1980-85): tests 30, wins 11, 36.6 per cent • Stephen Fleming (1997-06): tests 80, wins 28, 35 per cent • Jeremy Coney (1984-87): tests 15, wins 5, 33.3 per cent • Ross Taylor (2011-12): tests 13, wins 4, 30.76 per cent • John Wright (1988-90): tests 14, wins 3, 21.42 per cent - APNZ
