Police busy New Year’s Eve BY CAITLIN PORTER

CAITLIN.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton police were kept busy on New Year’s Eve, with three arrests and a number of call-outs. Ashburton police sergeant Janine Bowden said during the day police responded to a number of complaints. One person was arrested and another was summonsed to appear in court in regards to offending at local businesses. She also said police responded to calls regarding suspicious behaviour in and around proper-

ties in Allenton, as well as to a burglary at a residential address near the town centre. Throughout the day a number of calls were received by police regarding the behaviour of drivers on State Highway 1. During the evening police were called to a number of family violence events in and around Ashburton. Later on in the evening Ms Bowden said police responded to an incident south of Ashburton which resulted in the arrest of a male, who was affected by alcohol.

In the early hours of yesterday morning Ms Bowden said police responded to a call regarding a person repeatedly crossing the centre line on State Highway 1, south of Ashburton. The person was given an infringement notice as a result of an evidential breath test. The EBA result was within the new provisions, of between 251 and 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. At about 3.30am police were called to a group of 15 people who were fighting around the Moore Street area. This result-

ed in another arrest – this time of a male who received a precharge warning. “A lot of the police calls for service last night involved the excessive consumption and misuse of alcohol,” Ms Bowden said. She said police were also advised of an assault involving a weapon that occurred around licensed premises in the early hours of the morning and were currently looking into the matter. The night was a lot quieter in Methven and at Lake Clearwa-

ter. Methven police senior constable Mike Seque said New Year’s Eve went off without a hitch in both areas. “It was very quiet, quiet in Methven and quiet at the lakes,” he said. There were no arrests made and only one traffic ticket was issued in Methven early on in the night, he said. As for the weather at the lakes, he said it was very windy and there was a lot of dust which resulted in many people celebrating indoors. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!

Frog gives birth to tadpoles In the depths of an Indonesian rainforest, scientists have identified the first known frog that gives birth to tadpoles instead of laying eggs. Known as Limnonectes larvaepartus, this member of the Asian group of fanged frogs was first discovered decades ago by Indonesian researcher Djoko Iskandar. Scientists have long thought these particular frogs likely gave birth to tadpoles, but they had never seen the creatures mate or spawn first-hand. But they found new evidence of the frogs’ reproductive behaviour recently when University of California, Berkeley herpetologist Jim McGuire grabbed one that he thought was a male and found instead it was a female that had about a dozen slippery, newborn tadpoles with her.

Cars buried in salt after wall collapses A wall at a Morton Salt storage facility collapsed, burying several cars at a next-door auto dealership in road salt. Company spokeswoman Denise Lauer says a side wall broke, spilling road salt outside of the facility on Chicago’s northwest side and onto the neighbouring property. Morton Salt Inc. is a more than 100-year-old company based in Chicago best known for its pourable table salt. No injuries were reported. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says several cars were buried in salt. He says city engineers will look at the building’s structural integrity. Chicago police spokesman Thomas Sweeney says officers responded to a call about the collapse. He did not have further details.

The rocker submitted documents to a Los Angeles court on Tuesday citing irreconcilable differences for their split, according to TMZ.com. In papers obtained by the website, Slash, real name Saul Hudson, lists the date of their separation as June 15, and requests joint physical and legal custody of their two sons, London, 12, and Cash, 10. Slash and Ferrar wed in 2001, but in August 2010, he filed for divorce. Two months later, the couple reconciled, and they renewed their vows in 2011.

Dash one lucky kitten They say curiosity can kill a cat, but this one got lucky. A tabby kitten, temporarily named Dash until his new owners pick a more permanent name, was discovered under the dashboard of Otago Daily Times delivery driver Alister Rawson’s truck this week. Mr Rawson said he stopped at Ranfurly to drop off some bread at a Four Square store and accidentally left his cab door open. When he returned, three curious kittens bolted out the door and ran in different directions. The fourth kitten, Dash, could not escape in time and squeezed under the truck’s dashboard. It wasn’t until Mr Rawson returned to Dunedin and pulled his dashboard apart that the kitten was able to be extracted. “I chucked him in the pocket and brought him home and showed the kids.” Initially, Mr Rawson said he intended to take Dash back, but after the children saw him, there was no way they would allow that to happen.

■ DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN MID CANTERBURY

Police deal with burst of family violence By Erin TaskEr

erin.t@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton police dealt with a week’s worth of family violence incidents in almost half the usual time over the Christmas break. Ashburton police family violence co-ordinator Jim Sole said police attended eight family violence incidents from Christmas Eve, through to Sunday night. “That’s usually a week’s

worth,” he said. “Sadly a significant number involved violence toward women in the presence of children.” And most incidents featured alcohol. Mr Sole said people needed to think carefully about the impact of their drinking. “Do you want to be harming those closest to you? If your partner and children fear you when you are drinking, please

quit it,” he said. Christmas and the weeks that followed could be stressful times, financially and emotionally. In some families, mum and dad were no longer together and had new partners, meaning children were often pulled in different directions. But adults should not make their issues, their children’s issues, Mr Sole said. “Plan hand-overs if you share

care – be patient and respectful – role model the behaviour you expect of your children. They are watching and learning,” Mr Sole said. People needed to realise that the things children would remember most from this festive season weren’t the presents they got, it was the experiences they had. “The one thing that your children want most from you is

quality time. Think about making this an experience that will mean something to your children later in life. If you haven’t got money to invest, invest your time.” In 2012, more than 100,000 children were present when police attended a family violence incident in New Zealand and research shows that children are affected by violence in the home, even if they’re in another room.

Methven Pottery Society’s future up in the air By susan sandys

Left – The Methven Pottery Society, represented by members (from left) Pat Lees, Audrey Lowe, Margaret Robinson and Janie Davidson, faces an uncertain future.

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

The Methven Pottery Society faces an uncertain future as it is forced out of its building. “At the moment we honestly don’t know what we are going to do,” president Audrey Lowe said. The society has been given its marching orders from the Methven library, from which it has rented the land for its building over the past 30 years. The library is planning a new, larger building on the site. The short timeframe for moving shocked society members earlier last month – they have until the end of this one. The group hopes the weatherboard former school classroom will interest someone who would like to move it off the site. Then they will have to think about what to do with their resident kilns and other items. In the meantime they are reminiscing about the many years they have potted together. The society was established in 1976. Member Nola Grant was among those on the first committee, and many of the remaining seven members of the group today also go back many years with the group. Inaugural classes were held in

the old cinema on Bank Street, and well-known tutors would travel to teach there. Members, which once numbered over 30, held tutorial weekends, travelled to Kaikoura and the West Coast to study pottery, and staged firings for raku, pit and salt.

They saw trends come and go, and have made dragons, teapots, mushrooms, planters, mugs, bowls large and small, pot pourri holders, planters and toothbrush holders. They experimented with glazes and shapes, and held sale days at

■ CHERTSEY FIRE

Small smouldering fire turns into massive blaze It took three hours for firefighters to extinguish a blaze which started out as a small grass fire at Chertsey on Monday night. The fire, in a paddock alongside State Highway One, is believed to have spread from a smouldering heap which had been burning for around a week. Wind whipped it up and sent it into some grass before it ran around 20 to 30 metres into a pile of old tree stumps and logs. “When the guys got there they weren’t burning but by the time they got around the paddock it had got into it and it re-

quired a digger to be brought in to pull it apart,” Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said. Although it was right beside the state highway, the wind was blowing away from the road, meaning the smoke didn’t affect passing traffic. Volunteer firefighters from Rakaia, Methven, Ashburton, Lauriston and Pendarves attended the fire. Ashburton firefighters were also called out at about 3.50am on Wednesday, to a rubbish drum fire at a Suffolk Street property.

the rooms where people queued at the door. They established the Methven craft fair and held it for 20 years before handing it on to another group. Locally-made pottery is not as sought after these days, as shop-

pers can get mass-produced and therefore cheaper options, they said. However, that does not mean they do not want to keep potting and they plan to come to a decision in the New Year on the society’s future.

■ CANTERBURY ROAD TOLL

Men, bikes deadly mix BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Men, motorbikes and speed have proven to be a deadly mix on Canterbury’s roads this year. Six motorcyclists – all men – have died as a result of crashes on Canterbury’s roads this year, the district’s road policing manager Inspector Al Stewart said. “And that’s high enough to cause us some concern,” Mr Stewart said. The latest motorcycle fatality occurred on Sunday when a motorcyclist collided with an oncoming car on State High-

way 7 and Hurunui. It was one of three serious crashes involving motorcyclists in Canterbury since Christmas Eve – the first on Banks Peninsula on Christmas Eve afternoon landed an Ashburton man in Christchurch Hospital. The second, near Dunsandel on Boxing Day, was attended by the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade. Again, the motorcyclist was seriously injured. Mr Stewart said most crashes involving motorcycles also involved men, and speed. “When you’re riding a bike you’re already so vulnerable on the roads, you don’t have

the same protection you do in a car,” Mr Stewart said. “What we are finding is that motorcyclists are taking risks, especially around passing, and a lot of the time this is where they are coming to grief.” Time made up by overtaking could also lead to time spent on the side of the road waiting for an ambulance, police or even a hearse, Mr Stewart said. It wasn’t all motorcyclists; many rode responsibly on the roads without incident. But when motorcycles did crash, the consequences could be catastrophic. “I’m certainly not saying that motorcyclists

shouldn’t go out there and enjoy being on their bikes, but they need to do it safely,” he said. “We are still seeing far too many crashes where the motorcyclist is at fault.” One crash where the motorcyclist wasn’t at fault, occurred in Oamaru on Sunday, and involved an Ashburton man. A 30-year-old Ashburton man is facing a charge of careless driving causing injury following the crash, in which a 55-year-old motorcyclist from Alexandra suffered a compound leg fracture. The sun was shining and the temperature was just right for the Rangitata Huts annual New Year’s Race Day yesterday. About 400 holidaymakers joined in the fun, taking part in the events, including sprint races, sack races and a 5km run. Rangitata Huts Association president Bob Verrall said he was happy with how the event, which has been running for at least 60 years, turned out. He said it was a great time for everyone to get together. The top young fishermen at the huts last season were also recognised, with Sam Allen and Jake Strachan taking out the Hayden Riley Memorial Trophy. The New Year’s Day antics finished when two volunteers manned two cartoon inspired aeroplanes and handed lollies out to the children. Raffles were also sold yesterday, with all proceeds going to the children’s play area. Other events taking place over the weekend include a children’s fancy dress competition on Saturday morning and a magic show on Saturday night.

In brief Three call-outs The Rakaia fire brigade was called to a medical incident just after 6pm on New Year’s Eve. The brigade then attended a vehicle accident south of Burnham as well as a motorcycle accident on McKays Road, just before 9pm.

Serious accident Rakaia firefighters attended a serious accident north of Bankside at 7.30am yesterday. Three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Brigade called out The Ashburton fire brigade responded to the smell of smoke inside a motorhome on Chalmers Avenue midday yesterday.

Gisborne brawl Organisers of a New Year’s Eve Party that descended into a sprawling riot and ended in 63 arrests yesterday admitted the event’s future is now in jeopardy. The large-scale disorder, sparked by a small group of males torching tents, soon attracted a “mob mentality” and spread across two BW Summer Festival campgrounds. Police, who believe it was pre-meditated trouble planned by a core group, battled with the drunken mobs for three hours. The trouble started at about 5.30pm. In the end, 83 people were injured, including seven who needed hospital treatment. - NZME

Fears for climbers

We asked people around Ashburton what their New Year’s resolutions were.

The family of an Australian climber missing for four days on New Zealand’s tallest mountain is coming to terms with fears he is probably dead. Bad weather had hampered the search for overdue climbers Dr Mike Bishop, 53, from Sydney, and Raphael Viellehner, 58, and his son Johann Viellehner, 27, from Germany. It resumed yesterday under clear skies, but three helicopters could find no sign of the missing men. “The situation is grim,” police said. “It was hoped that if they had survived the storm they would have been spotted from the air today.” The search will now be re-evaluated, police say. - NZME

Man believed drowned An intoxicated man who walked into the sea at a Christchurch beach fully clothed yesterday is missing and presumed drowned. A local man in his 40s was seen by beachgoers walking into the surf at New Brighton beach wearing long pants and a t-shirt. Police and surf lifesavers were called after he went missing at about 10.30am. The Westpac rescue helicopter and six IRB surfboats were used in the search. Police said the man “appeared intoxicated”. - NZME

Two Auckland teenagers who handed themselves in to police on Wednesday have been charged with the murder of Ihaia GillmanHarris. Their arrests follow a fourday manhunt across the city after the 54-year-old died as a result of a blunt-force trauma to the head following an incident in an Auckland motel on Saturday. The pair will appear in the Auckland District Court today. - NZME

■ COMMUNITY HONOURS

Mr Vallender humbled by award BY CAITLIN PORTER

rom teaching, to volunteering at the Ashburton Museum and being a part of St John it is no wonder Glenn Vallender is one of eight recipients of the Ashburton District Council Community Honour Awards. The award is one that was familiar to him, his wife Elaine was a recipient in 2001 and his mother received the award in 2005 from the Waimari County Council in Christchurch. Mr Vallender was nominated by former colleague John Baird and seconded by another former colleague, Denis Saunders, both of whom Mr Vallender thanked in a short acceptance speech at the award ceremony early in December. “It’s always humbling, and slightly embarrassing,” Mr Vallender said. “For me, I just like doing things and helping out.” Mr Vallender and his family moved to New Zealand from

England when he was just six years old, a journey he remembers well, despite his young age. “I remember being told to go to the side of the boat and see the crocodile (on the Panama canal),” he said. He grew up in Christchurch before attending the University of Canterbury. He then went on to teach at Southland Boys’ High School, before taking a

gap year – although he was still teaching – in London. After getting a telegram from Ashburton College offering him a teaching position, he settled in the district and has been here ever since. Mr Vallender taught at Ashburton College for many years, but also dedicated a lot of his time to volunteer work. He has been involved with the

Ashburton Operatic Society for 27 years, although he admits he cannot sing so prefers to spend his time helping behind the scenes. In 2010 – no stranger to extramural education – Mr Vallender acquired his PhD from Curtin University in Perth. The topic of study was conceptual change and why people think the way they do and what could change that. Since 2012 he has also been involved with St John as a health shuttle volunteer bus driver, which required him to train in first aid, driver training and safety. His role involves assisting members of the public in getting to and from Christchurch for health related appointments, usually once a fortnight. Mr Vallender said he sees this role as a privilege, to share a day in the lives of others. One of Mr Vallender’s more

recent volunteer roles includes his work with the newlyestablished University of the Third Age (U3A), an organisation for semi-retired people who want to participate in things such as lectures, seminars, trips and other special interest groups. Mr Vallender calls it life-long learning. Even though Mr Vallender retired four years ago, he still remains very busy. He is working with the Ashburton Museum to create biographies of people in the town and is also helping to digitise the map collection – work that he thoroughly enjoys. “It is another way to contribute,” he said, “what is the point if (it is) not accessible?” Mr Vallender said receiving the award made him think about the need to nominate other deserving people – of which there were many within the community.

■ YEARENDER

2014 a year to forget on our roads BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

In the first seven months of 2014, eight people died on Mid Canterbury’s roads. From each crash, a family was left devastated; a loved family member was gone. It has been a year to forget. Eight deaths in one year is the most recorded on Mid Canterbury’s roads in recent years, equal with 2010, and 2014’s tally included a triple fatality, two pedestrians being hit by cars on rural roads, and a level rail crossing crash. Canterbury Police road policing manager Al Stewart said any death on the region’s roads is unacceptable, and the triple fatality was particularly gut-wrenching. “That crash was absolutely tragic but it was indicative of a real problem we have around intersections in Canterbury, particularly rural intersections,” Mr Stewart said. Much of it came down to inattention and misjudging

the speed of oncoming vehicles. “We’re certainly seeing a lot of the same factors, with speed and intersections, but one of the biggest ones for us is still seatbelts. People seem to feel safe, especially in the rear of a vehicle and not wear seatbelts, but the reality is no matter where you are sitting, if that vehicle has to stop quickly you’ll be in trouble,”

Mr Stewart said. It’s the same story every year. Mr Stewart said he had been given a Christchurch City Council road safety booklet from the 1950s and the messages were the same even back then. The biggest difference was the number of fatalities on the roads had dropped dramatically since then, despite there being more cars and more people on the roads. That was a positive. Mr Stewart said if the same pattern had continued from the 1950s, around 1750 people would have died on New Zealand’s roads last year. As of late on New Year’s Eve, Canterbury’s road toll for 2014 was sitting at 38. Nationally, the road toll was sit-

ting at 259 as of Christmas Eve. North Canterbury has been hit hard so far this holiday period, with three deaths as of December 31. Mr Stewart said a lot of the drivers on Canterbury roads over the summer were from elsewhere and not familiar with the roads. “There will be frustration on the roads over this period but it’s about not making a bad decision in a split second, because things can go wrong in a split second,” he said. Police have been out in force in recent days doing their part to keep everyone safe. “I would love all our staff to be out there and find no offending, but I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Mr Stewart said.

OUR VIEW

Dare to dream, dare to do Sue Newman

SENIOR REPORTER

T

he new year is one day old and how many new year’s resolutions have already been broken? As we move from one year into the next, for some inexplicable reason even the most sane and sensible among us make a few mental notes about doing things differently in the year ahead. A new year is a clean slate in our lives that only we can write on. Yes, life has a habit of throwing curved balls and wrecking our best-laid plans, but fuelled with the spirit of new beginnings, most of us plan to reinvent ourselves in some way as a new year dawns. If you were taking bets on the most popular resolutions they’d centre around diet and exercise and if your bets were how long those resolutions would last, you’d be a winner if you picked no more than a week or two. They’re easy to make and just as easy to break. It’s the big resolutions that are harder to make and even harder to commit to. No matter how humble our dreams or goals, they’re important. They’re ours. Yes there are external factors that dictate what we can and cannot do – money, family commitments, the need to work; but within all of those there is capacity to make change. The best resolution for the new year has to be simply getting on with life, ditching the trivia which we all get bound up in, looking at what we really want to do with our lives and doing it. The size of the want or need is immaterial, it’s the desire to do that matters. Yes, it might require significant change, yes it might be uncomfortable and, at times, it might be tough, but what’s the option - mediocrity? There would be nothing worse than sitting back a couple of days after new year when you’re too old to dream, too old to do and wishing you had.

■ NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Revellers welcome 2015 amid tragedy Millions of revellers took to the streets across the world from Sydney to New York to usher in 2015, but in China celebrations turned to tragedy when 35 people were killed in a stampede in central Shanghai. As the rest of the globe celebrated with spectacular fireworks displays in cities from Sydney to Moscow and London, chaos broke out in China’s financial hub as people packed the Bund district to welcome the New Year. Another 42 people were also injured in the crush, which happened shortly before midnight, the city’s government said in a statement, adding that the incident was under investigation. It was a tragic note on a night filled with hopes for a more peaceful year than 2014. The optimism was demonstrated in Australia, where an estimated one million people flocked to a massive fireworks display in Sydney Harbour, defying terrorist fears days after a deadly siege.

“We are celebrating that we are a multicultural, harmonious community, but we will be thinking about what happened,” Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in reference to the deadly stand-off when an Iranian-born gunman took 17 hostages in a cafe. In Hong Kong, hundreds of thousands of people crowded the city’s promenades to watch an eight-minute pyrotechnic dis-

play after a year in which busy thoroughfares were paralysed for months by pro-democracy protests. Europe’s celebrations kicked off in Moscow, where fireworks lit up the sky over St Basil’s Cathedral. President Vladimir Putin sent a greeting to his US counterpart Barack Obama, saying they had a mutual responsibility to ensure world peace after a year that has

seen relations between Russia and the West sink to their worst point since the Cold War. London was the latest major European city to welcome the New Year, its skyline illuminated by a thunderous 11-minute firework display in front of more than 100,000 ticket holders gathered on the banks of the River Thames. In Paris, the Champs-Elysees was closed off to traffic to allow

pedestrians to watch a visual spectacle projected on to the Arc de Triomphe before a huge firework display greeted the New Year. Tens of thousands of people gathered near the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin to watch a huge fireworks display and free concert featuring Baywatch star David Hasselhoff. Across Asia revellers celebrated with fireworks and music, with hundreds of thousands crowding near the landmark skyscraper Taipei 101 to watch performances by pop singers. But in Malaysia, a sombre mood prevailed after the crash of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 carrying 162 people and flooding in the northeast that has displaced almost 250,000 people. In Indonesia, where most of the air crash victims were from, New Year festivities in the capital started solemnly with a prayer for the victims while relatives gathered in Surabaya for a candlelit vigil in the hours before midnight. - AFP

In brief Chief killed The US military has confirmed killing the intelligence chief of Somalia’s Shebab militants in an air strike this week, saying it dealt a setback to the al Qaeda-linked group. Somalia’s government had already announced that the Shebab figure had been taken out in what it called a “joint” operation. “The Department of Defence has confirmed that Tahlil Abdishakur, chief of al-Shebab’s intelligence and security wing, was killed in an airstrike on December 29th,” the Pentagon said yesterday. - AFP

Dozens missing Italian authorities say they are unsure of the whereabouts of nearly a hundred people reported to have been among those on board the ferry ravaged by fire in the Adriatic on Monday. Italian prosecutor Giuseppe Volpe - who is investigating the tragedy in which 13 people are confirmed to have died - said many other people were still unaccounted for after the accident. “There are 98 people of whom there is still no news,” he said yesterday. He said the whereabouts of a freighter, which had helped in the rescue after the fire on the ferry Norman Atlantic, was unknown. - DPA

Weather clears for recovery Indonesian rescuers have promised an “all-out effort” to search for bodies from AirAsia Flight QZ8501 as the weather cleared and international investigators joined attempts to locate the fuselage of the ill-fated passenger plane. Seven bodies have so far been retrieved from the Airbus A320-200 carrying 162 people, which crashed in the sea near Borneo island en route from Indonesia’s second city Surabaya to Singapore. Rough weather yesterday had hampered efforts to locate and retrieve more bodies but conditions had since improved. “The weather is clear. We’re making an all-out effort to search for bodies and locate the fuselage,” search and rescue official Sunarbowo Sandi said from Pangkalan Bun, a town on Kalimantan with the nearest airstrip to the crash site. He said foreign experts would join Indonesian transport safety investigators in the search to locate the wreckage

today to locate the fuselage,” he said. “We hope that an underwater beacon will be able to detect the weak signal transmitted by the ELT (emergency locator transmitter),” he added. The transmitter sends a signal that helps rescuers to find a plane in the event of an accident. Four bodies have so far been transferred to land from warships with three more set to be moved today. “Three helicopters are getting ready to hoist three remaining bodies from the navy ship to Pangkalan Bun,” he said, adding that rescuers managed to bring two bodies to the town yesterday. Two other bodies have already been transferred to Surabaya where there are examination and identification facilities for 150 bodies. Police have taken DNA samples and medical data from dozens of relatives of the victims to aid in identification. - AFP

Vietnamese beef and noodle salad

1 red chilli, chopped (for garnish) ■ Whisk the marinade ingredients together in a bowl to dissolve the sugar. Taste and add more sugar, fish sauce, lime juice or chilli to suit your taste. Place the beef in a resealable bag or container and pour half of the marinade in to coat the steaks (reserve the rest to use as the salad dressing later). Seal the bag and marinate for an hour or overnight in the fridge. ■ Heat a little oil in a frying pan (or

on the BBQ) over a high heat. Cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes until the underside is crunchy and browned, then turn over and cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium rare or cooked to your liking. Remove from the heat to a warm plate, cover loosely with foil and rest for 10 minutes before carving across the grain into thin strips. ■ Place the noodles in a heatproof bowl and pour boiling water over to cover them. Let stand for about 10 minutes until soft then drain. Gently combine the beef, noodles and salad ingredients with the remaining dressing, season with salt and pepper and arrange in bowls. Garnish with extra nuts, fresh herbs and chopped red chilli.

■ SONY

The gadget-entertainment struggle By ElainE KurtEnBach

S

ony’s iconic gadgetry and the star appeal of Hollywood may have appeared to be a perfect match when the electronics giant bought Columbia Pictures in 1989. A quarter century later, it’s apparent that Sony Corp has not attained the magic synergy it was hoping for. The stolid silence of Sony’s Tokyo headquarters over the hoopla surrounding Sony Pictures Entertainment’s The Interview underscores the longstanding divide between the Japanese parent company and its US-led-and-run motion pictures subsidiary, successor to Columbia Pictures. Marrying the cultures of Sony Corp, a quintessentially Japanese company, and its Hollywood studio was such a challenge that company founder Akio Morita and his successor as chairman, Norio Ohga, never really tried, analysts say. Instead, they left Sony Pictures to mostly run itself. “They’re separate businesses run by separate management,” said Damian Thong, a senior analyst at Macquarie Capital Securities (Japan). “Since the late 1990s it’s been run basically as a stand-alone business.” Sony Corp in Tokyo refused requests for comment on developments related to The Interview, referring all inquiries to Sony Pictures in the US After first withdrawing the movie from a planned Christmas release on as many as 3000 screens, Sony Pictures made the movie available on various digital platforms last week, a day after Sony and independent theatres agreed to release it in over 300 venues at Christmas. There were no plans to release the movie in Japan, even

before hackers objecting to its satirical portrayal of an assassination of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un staged a massive cyberattack on Sony Pictures. As entertainment has shifted to digital delivery systems, technology analysts say it has become increasingly clear that Sony botched an opportunity to out-do Apple in creating a far more influential and valuable business from melding its consumer electronics expertise with ownership of a major movie studio and recording label. “It feels like there has been a lot of fumbling and a lack of co-ordination there for too long,” said Rosenblatt Securities analyst Martin Pyykkonen. “They really haven’t won in anything in a long time when they could have been a leader in terms of bringing devices and technology together. So shame

on them.” The lack of integration between Sony’s main divisions carries throughout the group and is among the reasons why the once iconic electronics giant has fallen behind, says Sea-Jin Chang, author of Samsung vs Sony and a business professor at Singapore University. Looking back, Chang believes Sony’s 1989 acquisition of Columbia Pictures was mainly a trophy purchase driven by Morita’s personal whims. Sony’s top executives have generally refrained from meddling in the movie-making process, giving Sony Pictures an autonomy that allows the studio creative leeway. But in turn the Sony brand has not gotten much exposure through the films it produces. And now that Sony Corp’s overall brand appeal has faded, it needs all the help it can get.

Sony Pictures has its ups and downs but has been a relatively strong performer in recent years, with hits like American Hustle and 22 Jump Street adding to the studio’s brand value. For the fiscal year ended March 2014, Sony Pictures generated operating income of $501 million on revenue of $8.05 billion; its parent reported total operating income of $257 million on sales and revenue of $75.41 billion. “Sony Pictures overall is quite important from a marketing relationship point of view, just because it’s one of the few properties now that is really getting people to see the Sony name anymore,” said Benjamin Cavender, a senior consumer electronics analyst at China Research Group in Shanghai. Some of the frustration with this long-standing malaise boiled over last year when an activist investor, New York hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, bought a 7 per cent stake in the company and urged CEO Kazuo Hirai to spin off the entertainment division. Hirai didn’t, but Sony cut costs, laying off dozens of workers, to boost Sony Entertainment’s profits before Loeb sold his stake earlier this year. Like many long-established companies that have been caught off guard by technological upheaval, Sony was still making too much money in its traditional lines of businesses to have the incentive to try something radically different, analysts said. In the meantime, a traditional tendency toward building consensus fostered bureaucratic obstacles between its various lines of business that make “it very difficult for anyone to integrate anything within the organisation because people

aren’t talking to each other and they’re not sharing information,” Cavender said. “Sony is run like a group of silos,” agreed Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who bought more than 8000 shares of Sony stock after Loeb tried to shake things up. “I don’t think Sony was ever going to be the first mover (in entertainment’s digital shift), but being Japanese meant things moved a lot slower than they should have been. They could have been a lot more nimble.” Instead, Sony has been outmanoeuvered by technology companies that anticipated the changing trends. Apple introduced the iPod to accompany its iTunes music store followed up by the iPhone and iPad, devices that have become entertainment and information hubs. Google bought the video site YouTube in 2006 and then gave away its Android software to create the leading technology platform on mobile devices. Netflix has built the internet’s biggest video subscription service by working with a wide variety of devices, including Sony’s PlayStation video game console. Amazon. com has been trying to orchestrate its own digital medley of devices, video, music and books. Sony, meanwhile, is still struggling to serve both its home and global markets and to decide if it will stick with its television manufacturing business or spin it off entirely, focusing instead on more profitable areas such as imaging sensors, games and entertainment. “It used to be that you’d see a Sony TV or Sony Walkman and think, ‘Man, Sony is the coolest product to have,’ and that doesn’t exist to the same extent anymore,” Cavender said. - AP

Praise for Phoenix’s Boyd

Comments earn Wigan chairman six-week ban

By Lee GaGLiardi Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick praised young football forward Tyler Boyd after his second-half double helped the Phoenix over-run Adelaide United 3-1 on Wednesday night. Kenny Cunningham gave Phoenix the lead against the run of play before Sergio Cirio equalised for United, but it was Boyd who stole the show with two goals off the bench in their A-League clash at Coopers Stadium. Cunningham and Jeremy

Brockie earned rare starts in the absence of Nathan Burns and Roy Krishna and with Boyd’s stunning cameo, Merrick said the trio made the most of their opportunity. “Tyler, Kenny (Cunningham) and Jeremy (Brockie) are all starting for the first time really - Tyler didn’t start but it was his first run for a while,” Merrick said. “But at training they’ve been showing they can score goals consistently and they were just waiting on their chances.” “Tyler took his chances really well and Kenny scored.”

Merrick lamented a slow start in which the Reds dominated and looked most likely to score, but the longer the match went on the more Merrick said his side were playing well enough to claim maximum points. “I thought we came out the blocks pretty slow actually, the first 15 minutes I thought Adelaide were the better team - created chances and got their midfield game going,” Merrick said. “But we gradually crept into the game more and more.” The Reds slipped to fourth on the A-League ladder and are now two points behind Wel-

lington who entertain Brisbane Roar on Sunday. United should welcome back a host of key players for their trip to meet league leaders Perth Glory on Monday in a match Josep Gombau said he is confident the Reds can win. “We will go to Perth and I think we can do a good game there,” Gombau said. “I think we have a chance to win. “Some players are coming in I think that we have everybody, Fabio (Ferreira), (Tarek) Elrich, Boogy (Nigel Boogaard), Chelo (Marcelo Carrusca).” - AAP

Keith out of singles at champs After a strong start at the Bowls New Zealand National Open Championships in Auckland, Sandra Keith has been knocked out of post-section play in the women’s singles section. Earlier in the championships, Keith made it through to postsection play unbeaten but on Wednesday lost 21-18 to Diane Main. Keith then had a day off on New Year’s Day when women’s singles continued but said she was looking forward to focusing on women’s pairs, with partner Serena Matthews. The pair remain unbeaten and are set to play again today in a straight knock-out. Post-section play for men’s singles also continues today. The finals in the men’s and women’s pairs and singles will take place on Sunday, before fours action kicks off on Monday.

Fans cheer as San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan is congratulated by team-mates after scoring a basket, with less than one second left in the second half, to send an NBA basketball game against the New Orleans Pelicans into overtime. San Antonio won 95-93. AP PHOTO

Spurs edge Pelicans in NBA Australian star Patty Mills continued his successful return from injury as reigning NBA champions San Antonio edged New Orleans 95-93 in an overtime thriller. Manu Ginobili sank the last of his 26 points on a lay-up with 24 seconds remaining to give the Spurs victory yesterday. San Antonio improved to 20-14 while the Pelicans fell to 16-16. Mills made his return this week after being sidelined for six weeks due to shoulder surgery and played over 28 minutes, scoring seven points and

registering three assists, one steal and two rebounds. While Mills’ compatriot Matthew Dellavedova scored 11 points, four assists and four rebounds in Cleveland’s 96-80 win over Millwaukee. Melbourne-born guard Kyrie Irving, in only his second game back from injury for the Cavaliers, scored 25 points for the Cavs who are missing LeBron James and Kevin Love with injuries. “We certainly fought,” Cavaliers coach David Blatt said. “Obviously we are shorthanded. That is what happened.”

Meanwhile, Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant scored 44 points in his return after missing six games, powering the Oklahoma City Thunder over visiting Phoenix 137-134 in overtime. Durant had been sidelined by a sprained right ankle suffered in a loss two weeks ago at Golden State. The superstar playmaker missed the Thunder’s first 17 games of the season following surgery on his right foot, but Oklahoma City has gone 8-2 with Durant in the line-up and improved to 16-17 this season with the victory. - AFP

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has been banned from all football-related activity for six weeks over comments he made about Jewish and Chinese people, the Football Association says. Whelan, 78, accepted an aggravated misconduct charge and was also fined £50,000 ($NZ99,909), warned about his future conduct and ordered to undertake an education course. He has seven days in which to decide whether to lodge an appeal. The FA’s disciplinary commission found yesterday that Whelan had committed an aggravated breach of its rules because his comments included “a reference to ethnic origin and/ or race and/or nationality and/ or religion or belief ”. However, the commission said it was “satisfied” that Whelan “is not a racist”. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Whelan defended his appointment of manager Malky Mackay, who is being investigated by the FA over claims he sent racist and anti-Semitic text messages to a colleague during his time at Cardiff City. Referring to remarks allegedly made by Mackay, Whelan was quoted as saying it was “nothing” to call a Chinese person a “chink” and also said: “Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else”. He subsequently apologised for any offence caused and declared that he was not a racist, but vowed that he would “immediately resign” as chairman of second-tier Wigan if found guilty of using racist language by the FA. He also made a bungled attempt to explain his comments by saying in an interview with the Jewish Telegraph that he had referred to Chinese people as “chingalings” when he was growing up. Whelan’s comments saw him branded a “racist” by Cardiff ’s Malaysian owner Vincent Tan, who sacked Mackay in December 2013. But Wigan issued a statement reacting to Whelan’s punishment in which it quoted the FA’s disciplinary commission as saying: “We are satisfied on the evidence before us that Mr Whelan is not a racist.” - AFP

Ashburton Guardian 19

In brief

Saavoya makes it a double Talented filly Saavoya added her name to a list of outstanding performers when she made it a Group Two double at Ellerslie with victory in the New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes. Successful over 1600 metres on Boxing Day in the Eight Carat Classic, the three-yearold daughter of Savabeel once again displayed both a terrific turn of foot and great tenacity as she staved off the challenge of favourite Vavasour to score by half a length with stablemate Charmont six lengths further away in third. It was a race of contrasts for the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman training team who produced both the winner and third placed runner whilst their other two entrants, De Kensington Oval and Ezra, were brought down in a home straight melee. Despite the win co-trainer Andrew Forsman was a little preoccupied immediately after the race as he tried to get information on his fallen runners. “I nearly missed the finish as I was watching further back in the field to see how our fillies were that fell in the run home,” he admitted. “I sort of looked back and saw she was in front but with all the commotion I can’t even tell you how she got to the front from being so far back on

the corner.” Forsman wasn’t alone in that respect as the filly settled well back in the running off a wide barrier and was still trailing the majority of her rivals as the field started to bunch as they approached the home straight. Jockey Craig Grylls didn’t panic and as the field spread turning for home he picked a path through the tiring runners before exploding to the front at the 200 metre mark. Favourite Vavasour immediately issued

her challenge out wide with the two fillies settling down to a ding-dong battle in which the Savabeel filly prevailed. Co-trainer Murray Baker was full of praise for the winner’s effort. “She’s a real tough thing and I wouldn’t like to be married to her,” he joked. “She showed all her qualities today and the only thing I couldn’t believe was the price on the tote after she had won so nicely on Boxing Day.

“I definitely think she is an Oaks filly so we will take her home now and give her a freshen up and set her for Trentham. Whilst successful in the race the news wasn’t all good for jockey Craig Grylls who was charged with careless riding in causing the home straight fall and is facing a stint on the sidelines for his actions. Thankfully both horses and riders Jonathan Riddell and Lynsey Satherley were unscathed in the incident. – NZ Racing Desk

■ CRICKET

Another Boxing Day test for NZ? By DaviD Leggat New Zealand might host another Boxing Day test this year, but there is no chance they will be walking on to the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground to face Australia on December 26. In the wake of the successful test against Sri Lanka – the sixth home test to start on Boxing Day, and first in 11 years – fresh scheduling possibilities have opened up for New Zealand Cricket. But being able to twist Cricket Australia’s arm to have New Zealand replace the West Indies as next summer’s opponent for the premier occasion on CA’s calendar simply won’t happen. There would be a significant ripple effect. Schedules are worked out years in advance and, bluntly, New Zealand’s appeal in economic terms is small compared to other countries – even though purely in playing terms right now it would be a no contest against the weak and shambolic West Indies.

That’s not to say NZC aren’t pushing hard to get back on the MCG – the most recent of three appearances there was in 1987 – and strong on-field form can only help the cause. But the next opportunity for that won’t come until the reworked Future Tours Programme is released hopefully in the next couple of months. New Zealand are scheduled for three tests before next Christmas, and the venues are almost certain to be Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. After that, New Zealand’s next trip across the Tasman is likely to be early 2017 for a series of limited-overs internationals. However, Hagley Oval’s impressive test debut will sharpen debate around the NZC board table about the way forward. There’s no guarantee of a Boxing Day test next summer – the tourists will be Pakistan – as it comes down to timing, both Pakistan’s and New Zealand’s.

Another issue is workload. If New Zealand arrived home on the back of three tests in Australia, then had three more against Pakistan, it would have to fit around contractual obligations. But NZC are chuffed at the way Hagley Oval played out. Australia come to New Zealand in the second half of next summer, and Canterbury Cricket has given itself a fighting chance of getting a second crack as test host. Pencil in Eden Park and the Basin Reserve. But there is the possibility of a decent duel between Hamilton’s Seddon Park and Christchurch to host a premier test. NZC’s general manager of cricket Lindsay Crocker didn’t want to get into a debate on the merits of the two against each other. However Hagley Oval clearly impressed him. “It looked great from a presentation point of view, and live there was a really good feeling,” he said.

“The setting was great because the ground is in an established (cricket) area. The players felt the atmosphere was good in the middle, and so were the pitch conditions, and you want to make sure you play tests on pitches that produce attractive cricket and get results, so it was ticks all round.” New Zealand have six current test venues – in Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. There are six tests to be allocated next season. It may be timing makes a test on December 26 impractical every summer. There is scope for an ODI, or T20, but even they’re not a given. “The success of Boxing Day in Christchurch has certainly given us an opportunity of having Boxing Day tests, if not as annual events then certainly something we’d consider more strongly than we have in the past,” Crocker said. - NZME

Usain Bolt believes he can better his world records over 100 and 200 metres and would like to be the first sprinter to run the longer distance under 19 seconds. “World records are always there to be broken. I am sure the times over 100 and 200 metres can still be improved,” the Jamaican sprint star told Germany’s General-Anzeiger and Koelnische Rundschau newspapers published yesterday. Bolt said if he could go under 19 seconds for the 200 metres it would be difficult for the next generation to beat. The 28-year-old Olympic and world champion over the distances holds the 100m world record of 9.58 seconds and 200m best mark of 19.19 seconds. - DPA

Kyrgios ruled out Young Australian tennis star Nich Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw from the Hopman Cup because of a back injury. The teenager, who knocked out Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, will be replaced by Matthew Ebden. Hopman Cup organisers tweeted late on New Year’s Eve: “Nick #Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw from #HopmanCup due to a back injury. We welcome WA’s own @MattEbden to replace him.” Kyrgios tweeted: “I’m gutted to miss the Hopman Cup.” Injury-free for the first time since charging into the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July, Kyrgios was to have launched his 2015 campaign at the Hopman Cup in Perth from January 4. - AAP

Plaque for Hughes A plaque to honour the memory of Phillip Hughes will be unveiled at the SCG on Monday on the eve of the fourth test between Australia and India. In one of a number of planned tributes to Hughes, whose death five weeks ago after being struck by a bouncer at the ground shocked the cricketing world, the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust will place a plaque featuring a small bust of Hughes on the wall of the Member’s Pavilion outside the home dressing round. Cricket Australia are yet to announce their tribute plans ahead of what is sure to be an emotional Sydney test which starts on Tuesday. The plaque will feature highlights from Hughes’ career at the famous ground, where he made his firstclass debut for NSW in 2007 and played his first home test against Pakistan in 2010. - AAP

■ ROAD RACE

Ethiopian double in Sao Paulo race Ethiopian athletes have scored a double success in the traditional New Year’s Eve road race in Sao Paulo, Latin Americas’s biggest, with Dawit Admasu taking the honours for the men and 2008 champion Ymer Wude Ayalew taking the plaudits for the women. Kenyan runners had won both men’s and women’s races in the past two years but this time their contingent was left trailing. Admasu, having already made an earlier attempt to hit the front, finally made the breakthrough in the final kilometre to leave the pack in his wake. Admasu completed the 15 kilometres through Brazil’s most populous city in 45 minutes and 4 seconds, just holding off Kenyan rival Stanley Koech by one second with Tanzanian Fabiano Naasi third in 45 minutes and 10 seconds. Kenya’s Edwin Kipsang Rotich of Kenya had won the past two men’s titles. Just beforehand, Ayalew ended a five-year Kenyan hegemony in the women’s race to land her second title. Ayalew won in 50 minutes and 43 seconds with compatriot and early pace-setter Netsanet Ke-

bede second for a second straight year, 3 seconds adrift. Kenyan Priscah Jeptoo, who won in 2011, was third, 36 seconds off the pace. The Brazilian contingent’s best showing came from Giovani dos Santos, who placed fifth in the men’s race, having managed fourth in 2012 and 2013. Joziane

da Silva Cardoso came eighth for the women. Brazil did score a win back in 2010 when Marilson dos Santos – who is concentrating on Rio Olympic preparations – won the men’s race. The last home women’s winner was Lucelia Peres in 2006. - AFP

Del Potro out of Brisbane event The Brisbane International has lost its second US Open champion in 48 hours with Juan Martin del Potro withdrawing from the year-opening tournament. Del Potro followed world No.9 Marin Cilic (shoulder) yesterday by pulling out of Brisbane due to a persistent left wrist injury. The Argentine has been out of the game since undergoing surgery in March, but had targeted Brisbane as his return to the tour. While it’s a second hit to tournament organisers losing another big-name drawcard, it has opened the door for two more Australians to gain wildcards to the men’s draw. Brisbane baseliner John Millman and James Duckworth were yesterday granted wildcards that had been earmarked for compatriots Marinko Matosevic and Sam Groth. With 2014 US Open champion Cilic and del Potro withdrawing,

two spots opened up in the main draw that were filled by world No.75 Matosevic and 81st-ranked Groth - their rankings gaining them automatic qualification. The quartet take the number of Aussie men in the tournament up to seven with defending champion Lleyton Hewitt, Bernard Tomic and rising wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis already booked in. There are three Australians in the women’s draw, headed by local hope Sam Stosur. The withdrawal of 2009 US Open champion Del Potro also leaves him in doubt for the Australian Open while he appears unlikely to mount a defence of the preceding Sydney International which he won last year. Argentine newspapers have reported the former world No.4 has yet to hit his double-handed backhand comfortably as his recovery has taken much longer than expected. Millman has enjoyed first-

round success in Brisbane in the past but missed his home tournament last year due to shoulder surgery which saw his ranking blow out to 1193. But a strong comeback, including three ATP Challenger titles, led to the 25-year-old moving back to 156th in the world. “I’m extremely excited to play the Brisbane International, which is a pretty special tournament to me being my home event,” said Millman. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given and the faith that’s been shown in me after coming back from a pretty serious injury.” Duckworth also collected two ATP Challenger titles in America last year to finish 2014 ranked at No.127. Qualifying for the Brisbane event starts today with maindraw matches kicking off on Sunday at Pat Rafter Arena. - AAP

Sport Cycling fun to kick off 2015 Josh Connor maintains his lead in the last lap of his race at the Tinwald Cycling Club’s family fun day yesterday. The annual event was for all ages and cyclists from Mid Canterbury, as well as Christchurch and Timaru joined in on the fun. Chairman of the Tinwald Cycling Club Junior Committee Don Sutton said there was no entry fee and no official results recorded. The day was just about having fun and enjoying the sunshine, he said.

Kiwis ready to face Sri Lanka BY DANIEL RICHARDSON When Brendon McCullum is in full flight, being at the other end of the pitch is a great vantage point. The Black Caps skipper has been nearly unstoppable during the past year and Kane Williamson got a first-hand look at McCullum’s whirlwind 195 during the first innings of the Boxing Day test against Sri Lanka in Christchurch. During the second session on day one, Williamson could only stand and watch in awe as McCullum took apart the Sri Lankan bowling attack at breakneck speed. Williamson and McCullum put on 126 for the fourth

wicket, which helped New Zealand set up their eight-wicket win. “I think after lunch, I certainly struggled in Christchurch and he was whacking it to all parts and it kind of felt like I was the library in a theme park,” Williamson said when asked what it was like to bat with McCullum. “He was doing everything and I was kind of watching and it was a great place to watch him bat and I was trying my best at the other end but it’s certainly fantastic the way he’s going.” New Zealand seem likely to take an unchanged side in to the second test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington that gets under way tomorrow.

A green wicket block greeted the sides yesterday but with a healthy dose of sun, the pitch should brown off slightly. “We’ve played some good cricket here in the last few games so it is nice to come back here,” Williamson said. The first morning will be crucial for whoever bats first as the Basin Reserve deck often provides something for the pace bowlers if they can hit the right areas. Given New Zealand boast a 1-0 lead in the two-test series, they will come in to tomorrow’s test as favourites but Sri Lanka won’t lie down before their tour heads to white-ball cricket. Sri Lankan batsman Lahiru

Thirimanne, who made 24 and 25 in the first test, said his side needed to produce a better display with the willow at the Basin Reserve. “We just want to concentrate on our batting, mainly,” he said. Poor shot selection let the Sri Lankans down in their first innings in Christchurch as they were bowled out for 138 and given New Zealand’s massive first innings total of 441, they were left to play from behind. They showed better discipline in their second dig as they made 407 and forced the Black Caps to bat again and Thirimanne said the side had taken confidence from that effort. Left-arm spinner Rangana

Herath missed the first test but Thirimanne said the 36-yearold, who has 260 test wickets to his name, was likely to return in Wellington. “I think he’s going to play the second test so we are really confident about him.” The Basin Reserve isn’t always kind to spinners but Thirimanne tipped Herath to thrive even if the pitch was more suited to the seamers. “He’s performed well in these conditions,” Thirimanne said. “He took wickets in England and Australia so we are confident that he’ll take wickets in these conditions.” - NZME
