THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Trouble-free beginning to 2014 BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

New Year celebrations went off without a hitch in Mid Canterbury, police report. A combination of wet weather, an increased police presence and the cancellation of traditional celebrations appeared to have stemmed any repeat of the problems experienced at the

high country lakes last year. On the eve of 2013 hundreds of young freedom campers, staying at the nearby Lake Camp descended on Lake Clearwater, where a disco was taking place, and caused mayhem. Fires were lit, fights broke out and when police arrived, officers were pelted with bottles. A number of arrests were made. The following day Lake Clear-

water hutholders and responsible campers were left to deal with a mountain of rubbish and human waste the troublemakers left in their wake, prompting a new strategy for this year’s celebrations. Rakaia senior constable Mike Jackson, who was at the popular holiday spot, said other than a couple of minor incidents the evening was trouble-free.

Ready, set, go . . .

“It may have been a combination of no music or bonfire, wet weather leading up to New Year’s Eve, and increased police patrols that helped with a better atmosphere,” he said. Ashburton police sergeant Bryan Ennis said the positive festive spirit was also evident in Ashburton. “It was a very good New Year, there were no issues up at Lake

Clearwater everyone seemed to be in a jovial mood,” he said. “We had no issues at the hotels, and there were a lot of people out and about, but again everyone seemed to be happy and having a good time.” While police attended a few incidents in residential areas, Mr Ennis said that was no different to any other night of the week.

Rihanna a fashion ‘chameleon’

Rihanna has been named Fashion Police’s style “chameleon” of 2013. The singer is known for constantly changing her looks and has even collaborated with British high-street brand River Island to design her own range. E!’s celebrity-style television show has said Rihanna takes the crown for the most exciting outfit changes of the year. “What a great year 2013 was for her!” Joan Rivers said in a clip. “I think she’s got style like nobody’s business - and international.” Co-host George Kotsiopoulos added: “What’s great is that her street style and her red carpet style are very different but they live in the same world. “She goes from hip hop to ‘70s glam to ladies who lunch; she has all these looks and they all work together. She really knows how to wear clothes, put a look together and own it.”

Store opens ice rink on roof In Japan, engineers will shrink at nothing to make a dream come true. That’s why a Tokyo department store now has an all-seasons ice-skating rink on the roof. Patrons at the Matsuya Ginza store, in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district, can enjoy a skate even in the hot summer months. The ice rink has its own artificial snowmaker to help make things really romantic. Hot soup and sandwiches are served, and according to a spokesman for the store, it’s a wonderful place to take a date.

Man lands ‘corrected’ 1918 stamps

NEWS

A collector credits a hunch with helping him land one of just 100 sheets of stamps recently issued by the United States Postal Service featuring a corrected version of its rare and famous error, the 1918 “inverted Jenny.” Art Van Riper bought the stamps in Waverly, N.Y., after reading that the Postal Service had printed a new batch of inverted Jenny stamps celebrating the 95-year-old edition that, by mistake, featured an upside-down biplane. “I just had a feeling that maybe there would be one in Waverly.” He intended to purchase five sheets of the $2 stamps, at $12 a sheet. Postal clerk Betty Gable persuaded him to take more. Van Riper, who has a jewellery store, said he collects oddities ranging from baseball cards to old steins. Van Riper’s was the fourth of the 100 sheets to turn up since the post office launched the campaign in September, USPS spokesman Mark Saunders said. One of the four is listed at $25,000 online, Van Riper said, but he doesn’t have plans to sell his sheet. Among stamp collectors, the inverted Jenny, produced by a printing error, is gold. Only one sheet of 100 stamps commemorating the nation’s first airmail flight was sold. One of the stamps recently sold for $977,000, according to the Postal Service.

LETTERS

Penelope Keith ‘elated’ at being a Dame Actress Penelope Keith, who has played some aristocratic characters in her long career, says she is “elated, exhausted and thrilled” at becoming a Dame in Britain’s New Year’s Honours List. The 73-year-old, known for her crisp diction and roles in sitcoms such as To The Manor Born and The Good Life, receives her honour for services to the arts and to charity. Keith said of her honour: “It’s the big one. I had already got an OBE and then a CBE, so I don’t know what is better than the icing on the cake - but this is.” She added: “You know, I sort of feel elated, exhausted and thrilled.” The star has been married to husband Rodney for more than 35 years. They met when he was checking security at a theatre at which she was appearing. Keith said she had managed to successfully avoid telling anyone other than her husband about her new title. “I found out six weeks ago but the way it works is that they send you a letter and then you have to eat it and keep quiet on pain of death,” she joked.

Woman gets new ID cards A Hawaii woman whose last name is 36 characters long has finally got her complete name on her driver’s licence and state identification card. Janice “Lokelani” Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele received her new licence and ID after her campaign to get her full name on the cards prompted the state Department of Transportation to change its policy and expand how many characters can appear on them. Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele said she’s happy she was able to help fix the problem of identification cards lacking sufficient space for long names. Hawaii driver’s licences and ID cards previously had room for names of up to 35 characters. But her name has 35 letters plus an okina, a mark used in the Hawaiian alphabet. The new policy allows 40 characters for last names, 40 for first names and 35 for middle names.

■ RANGITATA SPORTS DAY

A celebration of Kiwi culture BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The annual New Year’s sports day at the Rangitata Huts is a true celebration of real Kiwi culture. An intergenerational affair, involving all age groups, sports day attracts not only hutholders and campers at the seaside settlement, but day trippers from further afield. Rangitata Hutholders committee president Bob Verrall said the event has been running for at least 60 years, and possibly much longer. While the more actively inclined participated in the running and novelty races, many more were content to watch from the comfort of their camp chairs. The afternoon’s events culminated in a marathon, with two courses – one for the littlies and another for the more serious contenders. Mr Verrall said the number of summer residents, both in the huts and in the adjacent campsite, were about the same as last year. They probably totalled around the 400 mark, despite the wet weather leading in to the festive season.

deliver many salmon, and anglers were hoping yesterday’s catch may be the start of better things to come.

“There have been a few trout caught, and there wouldn’t be many people here who missed out on a couple of feeds of

flounder this year,” Mr Verrall said. All proceeds from the sports day go towards the children’s play area.

■ LAKE HOOD

Water safety compliance pleases lake manager BY MYLES HUME

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Boating behaviour on Lake Hood appears to have made a dramatic improvement this holiday period, thanks to a new lake initiative and a bit of dreadful weather. Lake Hood parks manager Gilbert Murdoch has been pleased so far with what has traditionally been a hectic time of year on the man-made lake, which in the past has seen boaties ignore lake rules by speeding through canals and refusing to wear life jackets. The lake can sometimes see more than 100 vessels on the water during a summer weekend. However, Mr Murdoch said with lake numbers significantly lower due to rain and the initiation of a new Lake Hood initiative, he was starting to see better bahaviour. Owners must now register their boats with park authorities and receive a registration sticker, which has prompted

think twice about doing something that might be a little bit silly,” Mr Murdoch said.

The registration scheme has been put in place to improve safety, and hopefully avoid adding to the two lives lost at the lake – both of which have been the result of swimming incidents. “Also the recent weather has put a dampener on things and it’s a bit quieter so we haven’t really had any issues on the lake, but if the weather improves boaties should be prepared to look at the rules and really just watch out for other people.” Mr Murdoch said a Lake Hood resident was rostered on to man a jetski during the holiday period to conduct random patrols. “They will be going round and talking to people, encouraging them to wear their lifejackets and keep to the rules. “Also they will be helping people out who need to register their boats.” Free Lake Hood registrations forms can be found online, at ACL, Ashburton Marine, The Lake House and from officials distributing forms at the boat ramp.

■ ASHBURTON PET SHOT

In brief

Police seek information on cat shooter By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

An Allenton homeowner can only describe the fatal shooting of her pet cat as “a senseless act of cruelty”. The Creek Road resident, who did not want to be named, now wants answers as to who and why someone shot their much-loved family cat with an air rifle on either Thursday or Friday last week. It is the second time one of her pets has been shot in just over a year. The owner said she returned home on Friday to find her twoyear old female cat had been shot in the left side of its torso. The pet managed to make it home from the attack before collapsing and dying just inside the cat door. “It is unclear who the shooter was or where the shooting occurred. We are at loss to understand why someone would

Woman named Police have named a woman who died after being found face-down in a motel thermal pool in Tauranga on Tuesday. She was Catherine Michelle Hintz, 41, of Palmerston North. The owners of Cameron Thermal Motel in Greerton spotted Ms Hintz lying lifeless in the hot thermal pool about 4.30pm. One of the owners, who declined to be named, said her husband dived into the pool and pulled the motel guest out of the water. The pool owner performed CPR until St John paramedics and firefighters arrived. St John territory manager Ross Clarke said Ms Hintz was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition. She died at 11.30pm, police said. The motel owner said Ms Hintz was staying at the motel on her own and was booked in for a couple of nights. There was no one else in the pool area at the time, she said. The death had been referred to the coroner. - APNZ

Ashburton police and the SPCA have been notified, with the culprit likely to face animal cruelty charges if found. The woman said it was not the first time one of her cats had been shot at, with one of the deceased cat’s siblings shot in November 2011. “On that occasion she survived with the help of several surgeries and lengthy difficult rehabilitation time, so to have two shootings within 14 months of each other is very upsetting for us.” Police and SPCA were also notified on the first occasion but were unable to apprehend the person responsible. She said the latest shooting had affected her other cats’ behaviour during the past week. Information on similar inci-

Two people were rescued after their boat overturned on Raglan Bar yesterday morning. Police received several calls from members of the public after the the boat capsized on the bar, 1-2km from shore, shortly before 10am, Constable Maree Fouhy of Raglan police said. “It was fortunate lifeguards from the Raglan Surf Club had observations of the five-metre Haynes Hunter fibreglass boat as it tried to cross the bar and saw it capsize, sending the two occupants into the water,” she said. The two people from the boat, who were both wearing life-jackets, were rescued within minutes by members of the surf club. They were both shaken but unhurt. - APNZ

Two stabbed Two men had surgery at Wanganui Hospital early yesterday after being stabbed at Waiinu Beach north of the city. The attacks happened at the quiet beachside settlement a few kilometres from Waitotara and about 35km from the city. The first stabbing happened just before midnight on New Year’s Eve and the male victim was airlifted to Wanganui Hospital. About an hour later a second man was stabbed and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Acting Detective Sergeant Craig Gorringe said details of what happened, if the incidents were in anyway connected or had happened at the same scene could not be confirmed at this stage. - APNZ

■ ASHBURTON HOSPITAL

Video link enables diagnostic help BY TONI WILLIAMS

TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton Hospital is using video link technology to get better treatment for patients in need. A 42-inch telehealth unit has been set up in the Acute Admissions Unit (ACU). At a cost of about $25,000, it gave Ashburton Hospital medical staff direct access to staff in Christchurch. Medical Services clinical director Scott Wilson said it was like having another set of eyes in the ACU room. The video link allowed doctors in Christchurch a real-time view of a patient’s situation in Ashburton. The visual assessment of a patient was better than just a telephone conversation. The high definition camera could be controlled from Christchurch. The camera along with the television screen was located above the door jamb and looked down onto patients. Christchurch personnel could narrow in on an area by zooming in or out. Or move left or right to focus on where it was needed.

It was beneficial around not only treatment issues and advice on continued treatment but also to confirm the need of transport for transfer – whether it be ambulance or helicopter. When patients were transported to Christchurch it was an ideal hand-over tool. Medical personnel knew what the patient’s situation was and how they had been treated in Ashburton. Dr Wilson said it was still new technology to most people and some were nervous about “being on display” but the benefits were worthwhile, especially as patient care was foremost. Options were being looked at for future use of video link including outpatient clinics and nurse specialists’ consultations. Also the use of telehealth for orthopaedic rehabilitation patients instead of ambulance transfer. “Technically we can dial any unit but we haven’t really opened it up.” The units were already used at Community Psychiatric Services, Ashburton Hospital’s Acute Admissions Unit is using video link technology with its medical for staff education, peer reviews care. ■ CHRISTCHURCH NEW YEAR’S CHAOS

Party out of control; flat trashed By Kurt Bayer

been left with an unenviable explaining job to their landlords, who are out of town. The back-section Frankleigh St flat was yesterday barely habitable. Every window had been smashed, graffiti scrawled over walls inside and outside the house, with large holes in the interior plasterboard. A wooden picnic table was on the roof, and hundreds of empty and broken bottles and crushed cans were strewn about the yard. Pools of blood and blood trails led up the driveway. Chockful rubbish bags were

A Christchurch flat was destroyed in a New Year’s Eve party that spiralled out of control via social media. The 12-hour party was shut down by police in full riot gear shortly before midnight after the tenant finally called them in. When the officers, wearing shields and helmets, arrived at the “large scale disorder” they had beer bottles hurled at them. Two arrests were made and six on-the-spot fines were handed out. Now, the young tenants have

stacked in the garage from a half-hearted early morning mop-up operation at the front of their property which police officers forced on them. Party co-host Hemi Carstairs blamed Facebook for spreading the party’s message beyond his group of friends. “It was a mean night until it got out of hand then people started getting out of control, breaking the windows and it got too ruckus and out of control,” he told Newstalk ZB. Mr Carstairs isn’t looking forward to facing his landlord. “I don’t think he’s going to be

happy.” Another of the party’s organisers, Connor Dunlevey, told 3News that once the windows started smashing “that was it”. The house was owned by the father of another of the party’s organisers, Taylor Te Kata, who told 3News he had yet to see his father’s reaction. Attempts to contact the owners were unsuccessful. One neighbour said she had phoned police earlier in the night as the party escalated. “It was turning ugly pretty early on,” said the woman, who did not wish to be named.

Weather warning

In brief Woman hurt in crash A woman was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital last night following a crash at Alford Forest. The woman was the sole occupant of a vehicle which lost control on the shingle - on Alford Forest Cemetery Road - and crashed into a tree shortly before 6pm. The Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade had to cut her from her vehicle. The extent of her injuries was not known last night. It was the Westpac Rescue Helicopter’s second visit to the area for the day, having earlier airlifted a patient with a medical problem to Ashburton Hospital, from Mount Hutt Station Road.

Thunderstorms, gales and flash flooding are on the way as severe weather gets set to lash the country, forecasters say. The MetService has issued severe weather warnings yesterday for Buller, Westland, Nelson, Marlborough, Fiordland, Canterbury, Otago and Southland. A front over the Tasman Sea is set to hit the country, bringing rain to most places. The MetService is warning heavy rain could cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, with flash flooding possible. Strong winds could bring down trees and power lines and make driving hazardous for motorcycles. Thunderstorms were likely, with a high risk in northern Westland, Buller, Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds. “Today’s trough will spread the area of rain and thunder, currently across northern areas of the South Island, to many western parts of the North Island during the late afternoon [and] evening especially from Taranaki down to the Wellington region,” MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett said. “This will just be a few showers by the time it reaches the eastern and northern areas later tonight.” - APNZ

Jump goes wrong An Auckland teenager has been airlifted to Rotorua Hospital after a cliff jump ended badly. The Rotorua-based Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the Waioeka Gorge around 1pm yesterday to assist the teen. The 19-year-old was among a group of people jumping off a 13m cliff face along State Highway 2 into the Waioeka River about 30km south of Opotoki. He slipped and landed on the rocks below, dislocating his shoulder. - APNZ

Grenade scare An army bomb disposal team was sent to a Wellington house after a grenade was discovered in its basement yesterday. A Titahi Bay resident alerted police after the discovery, acting shift Inspector Guy Callahan said. The bomb disposal unit deemed the grenade harmless, Mr Callahan said. - APNZ

■ MID CANTERBURY HOLIDAY SPOTS - LAKE HOOD TRAIL

Nature’s river route

Woman, 94, has scooter stolen from shop BY PATRICK O’SULLIVAN

Guardian reporter Toni Graham checks out the popular Ashburton River cycle trail that leads to Lake Hood.

M

id Canterbury offers a number of trails waiting to be cycled or walked, including the 19km Hakatere River Trail, starting on the north side of the Ashburton River bridge. But for a nice relaxing trip out close to town try the Braided River/Lake Hood trail, a distance of 7.4km (8.5km if you want to go to Lake Hood Restaurant). If you planned a picnic lunch, togs and a towel, it could be a great escape route to Lake Hood for a few hours. The track is good for walking, running, cycling and pushing the buggy. However, the rough terrain and narrow path just to get on to the track from

under the bridge likely rules it out for wheelchair access. Also multiple gates along the route to stop motorbikes and cars using the track could also cause issues for wider wheelchairs. Access to the track starts on the Tinwald side of the Ashburton River bridge. It takes about 30 minutes for an adult to bike, or just over an hour going at a child’s pace. If can take about two hours to walk, and can be done in either direction. Once onto the track, a tended gravel track meanders around poplars and willow trees running parallel to the Ashburton River before hitting farmland and veering slightly inland to reach Lake Hood.

“ Along the way the sounds of bird song include pheasants and magpies but there are sparrows, woodpigeons, wax-eyes flittering among the trees. The sound of crickets also blends in among the whirr of bike tyres

and the flowing river. The smells of nature and freshly cut wood fill the air. It is a popular track with pockets of people passing by but mostly it is peaceful and relaxing.

■ BREMNERS ROAD CRASH

Driver lucky to escape injury A man was lucky to escape uninjured after his van rolled on Bremners Road yesterday morning. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10am and found the van on its side after crashing into a power box and telecommunications unit on the side of the road outside the Ashburton Cemetery, Ashburton Police sergeant Janine Bowden said. “When I first got here I thought ‘whoa’... but it turned out it wasn’t too bad,” Ms Bowden said. It’s believed the man, aged in his 50s and the sole occupant of the van, may have fallen asleep at the wheel, Ms Bowden said.

A 94-year-old woman had her mobility scooter stolen while shopping in Taradale on Tuesday. Fran McPherson said she had parked outside the Unichem pharmacy in Gloucester St and when she came out her scooter was gone. “I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t there - the girls in the shop were very helpful,” she said. “Those scooters can’t be ridden off without the key - the brakes lock - and I’ve got the key.”

Pharmacy assistant Carolyn Osborne said she went looking for the red Arrow scooter, which sported a red flag. “I went down the street, thinking she had left it somewhere else, but she is adamant she came here first,” Ms Osborne said. “She said her scooter had been stolen but she had the key. They would have to push it, I guess, which is quite odd.” Ms McPherson said her parking might have been a factor in its disappearance. “When I got home I started thinking about it - I parked it in a little alcove straight outside the chemist door. I parked it up against the kerb and I now think it wasn’t a good place because the person parked there wouldn’t be able to open the door. “I wonder if somebody got so angry they did something about it. It is a big blow to me - I’m 94.” Ms Osborne said the scooter was insured but until it was replaced she would have to walk everywhere. “I’ll be all right I’m quite a fit person - as fit as you can be at my age.” Police also searched for the scooter and drove her home. “I hope they find it and know why it was taken,” she said. - APNZ

NEWSMAKERS OF 2013 As 2014 gets under way, the Guardian is taking a look back at the year that’s been and catching up with some of Mid Canterbury’s newsmakers. Reporter Sue Newman talks with Terry O’Neill.

Terry’s long road back T

his time last year Terry O’Neill was able-bodied, energetic and active; today he’s still energetic, still active but now he’s wheelchair bound. But incredibly, a year from hell hasn’t taken the smile from Terry’s face and it hasn’t done a thing to dampen his enthusiasm for life. Last summer Terry’s life changed forever when he fell from a tree, snapped his spine and bought himself a date with a wheelchair. He says 2014 can only bring better things. Looking back over the long journey of change that has been 2013, Terry says he’s now adjusted to his reshaped life. “I’ve certainly had my moments. You try to have a normal life but you have to accept you can’t do quite as much; it’s now about managing the fatigue and that’s a learning process.” Four months after his accident, Terry was back at work and for a forester that’s a big call. He started out at two hours and day and now manages around 25 hours a week. Life is certainly not easy, but Terry’s now just looking at getting on with life, exploring new opportunities and getting back into sport. His biggest issue is neuropathic pain. At times it wears him down and it seems odd that he’s having pain in parts of his body that essentially have no feeling. It’s bizarre – and painful – he said. “It gnaws away at you, it never really leaves you. It’s better in the mornings so I start my day as early as I can and of course my routine in the morning takes a bit longer than it did.” He’s ticking off achievements one

by one. Learning to live alone with his disability has been his biggest accomplishment this year and a few weeks ago he had his first holiday since his accident. Something as simple as spending three days in Wellington – it was a great feeling to do something so normal, he said. His challenges for the year ahead are to spend more time out in the field

with his work. Mountain bike type tyres on his wheelchair make that easier and it’s worth the effort to talk to people on the job rather than by phone, he said. And then there’s sport. He’s determined to become a participant rather than a sidelines observer. He talks to people with similar injuries and says that helps him realise how

much he can achieve. Swimming is his main recreational activity and he’s about to have his rowing boat kitted out so he can get back on the water. He’s also keen to get himself a hand bike. “If I can get the pain management side of things right, life will be great,” he said.

■ ASHBURTON ART GALLERY

Famous names have fun with portraits Visit the Ashburton Art Gallery for a change of pace over the festive season. A new interactive exhibition called Who Am I? brings together a selection of works from renowned artists that celebrate the art of portraiture. Who Am I? is a unique and playful exhibition which focuses on identity through the art of portraiture. How someone sits in a portrait, their expression, what they are wearing, who they are with and what they are surrounded by can tell us a lot about a person. With an inquisitive and insightful approach this exhibition is all about looking at portraits and asking “who are you” and “who am I?” The exhibition which has come to Ashburton from The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt is a treat for the gallery. “We are currently the only South Island venue for this exhibition and I’m delighted that we have been able to host it,” gallery manager-curator Shirin Khosraviani said. “It’s a rare type of exhibition

which is solely designed with younger audiences in mind, in saying that, I can’t seem to get enough of it either so I’m certain older generations will enjoy it too.” Visitors will recognise the famous names in this exhibition. Paintings by Rita Angus, Toss Wollaston, Francis Hodgkins and Nigel Brown are magnificent and powerful while sculptures by Jim Cooper and Paul Rayner add a light-hearted touch to show. “The exhibition has all the right elements; it’s educational, powerful and playful,” Ms Khosraviani said. It runs until March. The gallery will be launching a portraiture competition in conjunction with this exhibition along with a new story writing competition in conjunction with Henry’s Map, the David Elliot exhibition currently on display. OUR VIEW

New Year slides quietly into existence Michelle Nelson CHIEF REPORTER

N

ew Year appears to have arrived with scarcely a hiccup in Mid Canter-

bury. Police reported the vast majority of those out celebrating to have been tolerant and jovial during a period which they often find vexing. Even those staying in the freedom camping area at the high country lakes appear to have got the message, and ditched their anti-social ways – enabling everyone to enjoy the occasion. Drivers have also behaved well on the roads for the most part – and we have escaped without a fatality on the district’s roads over the festive season. In fact police have reported 2013 as having the lowest number of deaths on New Zealand’s roads since 1950, with the toll at 254. This is being attributed to safer vehicles, improved road design and tougher penalties. It could also mean the message about speed, alcohol and seat belts may at last be sinking in. The December road toll of 23 is the lowest since 1965 – and can possibly be attributed to the reduced speed tolerance of 4km/h, introduced with the Safer Summer campaign which was launched in November. However, there is no room for complacency – there are still a number of idiots who continue to drink and drive, speed and behave in a reckless manner. With this in mind it pays to reflect on the families of the 254 people who died, and the fact this will have been their first Christmas without their loved ones. And we should also consider the impact of the serious crashes which occurred last year, changing the lives of many victims and their families forever. As business returns to usual next week, holidaymakers will be heading home, often undertaking long journeys on unfamiliar roads – we should all be aware of this and practise tolerance and patience on the roads.

Facing up to a fresh start

Ashburton Guardian 13

POLL QUESTION Today’s online poll question Q: Will you be making a New Year’s resolution?

Finau Fakapelea OUT OF COLLEGE

I

n my year as head girl I have made some changes, some decisions and some sacrifices. All of which I have been both afraid and proud of. I have learned by making mistakes and taking risks and I believe in not only sticking to what you believe in but never giving up hope on what we believe. Because I say with a heavy heart that I have lost, I have gained but I have grown as a human being. I have discovered new meanings to life and gained a perspective on the barriers that seemed impossible to break. I guess that’s why we all look forward to the New Year. It’s an opportunity and a chance to begin fresh again, to achieve the goals that weren’t completed the year before and approach the opportunities that had seemed unapproachable. It’s a struggle to let go of experiences, chances and mistakes we have had in 2013 because sometimes we feel that if we let go of these comfort barriers we will be lost but in all honesty take this New Year as a chance to begin a new life. Sometimes it’s the change we need to become the people we truly are but don’t give up if it doesn’t happen all in one week. Don’t tire of being a better you although you may feel that in this new year, if it doesn’t work out in the first couple of weeks then this fresh start, this new beginning, is all over. But waking up on a Monday morning is a fresh start. You don’t have to begin a new year to begin a new you. A New Year may become an illusion when you’re faced with difficulties, of losing a loved one or even losing a piece close to your heart. But it’s the test to your beliefs, no matter what it is you believe in. Testing the boundaries of your limits. These are the times where we must remember the goals we have set as people. a new adventure or the butterflies when beginning a new path. As I move on to my future endeavours this coming new year I have butterflies and nerves the size of Mount Everest, I sometimes even second guess my choices. I mean who hasn’t? chapter on a routine that has been known for years. But it’s this very path that makes me so happy and excited that’s the very reason I do the things that I do. I ask myself why would I do something that I don’t want to do? If something makes me unhappy then why continue down that path. Do a u-turn and become who we are meant to be. Because time is very precious and losing family and friends

have only opened my eyes even more to the obvious. Times can be cut short and surprises can jump out of nowhere so I urge you to be prepared for the unprepared. Because life can do that to you. Take someone from you but also give you something in return. It’s all a learning point, and we always will be learning having a fresh start every year and why not. Never stay satisfied with the ordinary, strive for something better, be happy and remember what is really important in life. Finau Fakapelea is a former head girl of Ashburton College. ■ FRANCE

In brief

Schumacher not out of woods Michael Schumacher underwent a second surgery after a brain scan showed small, “surprising” signs of improvement, but grim doctors said yesterday they could offer no insight into the prognosis for the Formula One champion. Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, suffered critical head injuries when he fell and struck a rock Monday while skiing on a family vacation in the French Alps. His manager confirmed that the accident cracked his helmet, which doctors credited for giving him a chance at survival. Schumacher’s condition stabilised somewhat after the second surgery, but he remains in a medically induced coma — and doctors gave no prediction on how long that would last. “We cannot tell you any more about the future,” said Gerard Saillant, a surgeon and friend of the family who is in Grenoble. Saillant said it would be “stupid” to make any predictions about Schumacher’s recovery.

Schumacher and his 14-yearold son were skiing in the French Alpine resort of Meribel, where the family has a chalet, when he fell and hit the right side of his head on a rock. He was taken first to a local hospital, then to Grenoble University Hospital, which is recognised as having one of France’s best neurology teams. Dr Emmanuel Gay, the hospital’s chief neurosurgeon, said a brain scan performed late Monday showed bruising “a little bit everywhere” in Schumacher’s brain — but also an unexpected easing of pressure. “The brain scan was, I must say, surprising,” he said. But Gay and other doctors cautioned that Schumacher’s condition was still grave after the successful two-hour surgery to eliminate the largest and most accessible bruise, on the left side of his brain. “We cannot say he is out of danger,” said Dr Jean-Francois Payen, head of the hospital’s intensive care unit. Payen said any neurological evaluation

Bomb kills 6 The Philippine military and police say at least six people have been killed and 15 others wounded in separate bomb attacks in the country’s southern region. Armed forces spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala says a homemade bomb exploded at a kiosk in Basilan province’s Sumisip township, killing six people and wounding 10 others during a New Year’s party. Police say that hours earlier a grenade was lobbed outside a Protestant church, wounding a mother, her three children and another girl in Carmen township in Cotabato province. - AAP

was “out of the question” for now. Payen said medical literature puts the recovery rate at 40 to 45 per cent of patients. Schumacher was being kept artificially sedated and his

body temperature was lowered to between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius (93.2 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit), to reduce swelling in the brain, reduce its energy consumption and allow it to rest. - AP

A woman walking across a Boston drawbridge was crushed to death after an operator raising the bridge for a boat to pass heard her screams and lowered it, accidentally trapping her between the two plates, investigators said. The woman was crossing the bridge around noon when a bridge operator, not aware that she was on the bridge, began raising it for the boat in the Chelsea River. The woman grabbed hold of one of the sides of the bridge and the operator immediately lowered it when he heard her scream, but she became trapped in between the plates and suffered massive trauma, police said. - AAP

■ ANTARCTICA

Wet weather delays Antarctica rescue Scientists and tourists stranded on a ship off Antarctica are waiting for weather conditions to improve so they can be evacuated. A helicopter on board the nearby Chinese Xue Long icebreaker will be used to evacuate 52 of the 74 people who have been stranded on the Akademik Shokalskiy since Christmas Eve when it became stuck in deep pack ice. But yesterday, the Austral-

ian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said rain and winds of 20 to 30 knots meant the helicopter could not fly. “Rescue situation in Antarctic remains unchanged,” AMSA tweeted. It also said it had contacted the Akademik Shokalskiy and all on board were safe and well. Overnight, those stranded posted videos of themselves celebrating New Year’s Eve. In one, they perform a song

about their plight, while in a second they sing Auld Lang Syne as they stamp down the snow near the ship in preparation for the arrival of a rescue helicopter. Expedition leader Professor Chris Turney tweeted that it was warm, wet and windy. The decision to resort to a helicopter rescue was made after freezing winds and snow showers prompted the Aurora Australis icebreaker to retreat.

■ NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE WORLD

Global fireworks party welcomes 2014 The world welcomed in 2014 with a series of spectacular firework displays as a wave of pyrotechnic extravaganzas swept around the globe to celebrate the New Year. About 2.3 million people thronged Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Copacabana Beach for a raucous celebration as 24 tonnes of fireworks launched offshore lit up the sky. Europe joined in the party with a giant salvo in London, after Dubai attempted to break the world record for the biggest fireworks show and Sydney got the ball rolling ahead of Asia

with a dazzling display. In London, huge cheers went up as parliament’s clock tower chimed in 2014, as people packed the banks of the River Thames to watch the pyrotechnics at the London Eye. About 50,000 took part in “the world’s first multi-sensory fireworks display”, when peach snow, edible banana confetti and orange-scented bubbles descended on a section of the crowd. In Dubai, the Middle East hub was attempting to break the Guinness World record by setting off more than 400,000

fireworks. The glittering display lasted around six minutes and spanned 100km of the coast, focusing on the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower at 830 metres high. People crowded in the streets below took pictures as the thundering display filled the skies. “It’s amazing,” said May Hinnawi, a 35-year-old Syrian. “I will tell my children and grandchildren I was here to see this.” In Europe, Berliners partied at the Brandenburg Gate, while hundreds of thousands in Paris thronged the Champs Elysees. Jamaican police say they have foiled an attempt to smuggle marijuana through an island airport in a wheelchair. Transnational crime police at Kingston’s international airport say they arrested two wheelchair-bound Jamaican men as they tried to board a Tuesday flight to the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao. When the first man was stopped for security screening, police say a search of his wheelchair revealed nearly 8kg of pot stuffed inside the seat. They say that the other man in a wheelchair was stopped minutes later with nearly 2kg of marijuana hidden in fiberglass compartments in his carry-on suitcase. - AAP

Thieves steal gold Thieves have stolen 75 kilograms of gold and silver from a Brisbane home on New Year’s Eve, using a wheelie bin to move their loot. Police say the thieves ransacked several rooms before finding a safe and breaking into it. The intruders stole gold and silver bullion and coins from the safe worth about $200,000. Police believe they then used the household wheelie bin to move their loot to the end of the street. - AAP

Mercury rising Queensland is about to swelter in a heatwave, with the mercury tipped to reach close to 50C in some parts of the state this week. In the western Queensland town of Birdsville, the mercury could soar as high as 48C on Thursday which in Brisbane, temperatures are predicted to hit a sultry 39C on Saturday. Meteorologist Gordon Banks from the Bureau of Meteorology said a large, dry, hot mass of air stagnating in the nation’s interior was the cause. - AAP

Pattinson fires up James Pattinson has declared his brilliant 4-24 for the Melbourne Renegades the perfect buildup to his international return. Recalled to Australia’s one-day squad this week, Pattinson responded by ripping through the Hobart Hurricanes’ top order in the Renegades’ 51-run Big Bash League win. The 23-year-old was on a hat-trick when he removed former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik (1 from 5) and Englishman Owais Shah (0 from 1), both caught behind the wicket, with superb deliveries in the third over. He then helped mop up the tail, clocking more than 140km/h during his four overs as he looks to add to his 12 Tests on Australia’s tour to South Africa next month.

McIlroy’s best birdie Golf superstar Rory McIlroy has snared the most important birdie of his life, announcing his engagement to tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy used the New Year’s Eve fireworks at Sydney Harbour as the spectacular backdrop for his midnight proposal, with the sporting love match hitting Twitter to make their big announcement. “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!” Wozniacki, 23, proudly posted a photo of her diamond engagement ring, saying she said “YES!!!” after McIlroy popped the question.

■ ASB CLASSIC TENNIS

Hampton senses opportunity Tuesday’s carnage at the ASB Classic didn’t go unnoticed by Jamie Hampton, who is the only seed remaining in the top half of the draw and sees it as an opportunity to claim her maiden WTA title. Five seeds were ousted in the first round of the tournament, including top seed and world No 14 Roberta Vinci, who was toppled by promising 16-yearold Ana Konjuh on Tuesday night. Hampton yesterday eased through to today’s quarter-finals with a comfortable 6-3 6-4 victory over Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Third seed Kirsten Flipkens and second seed Ana Ivanovic stand out in the bottom half of the draw. The 23-year-old Hampton was beaten by eventual winner Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals of last year’s tournament, which set her up for her best year on tour. She rose to a career-high 24 in July and finished 2013 ranked 28. “Absolutely,” Hampton said when asked if she saw the loss of so many seeds as an opportunity for her.

“The top half of the draw has kind of fallen apart but also you have unseeded Venus Williams, which is a bit of a tough one.” Williams survived a tough three-setter against experienced Austrian Yvonne Meusburger but her form has so far been erratic - plenty of winners but also numerous unforced errors - and Hampton will fancy her chances if the pair meet in Friday’s semifinals. Hampton is the third-ranked American behind Serena Williams (No 1) and Sloane Stephens (12) but further down in the profile stakes with the US public. “It’s OK,” she said. “It has its advantages. No one really knows who I am so I can fly under the radar a little bit. I would like some exposure. “Maybe not [as much as Venus]. It comes with the territory. If I do well, I’m going to get more exposure and I will have to embrace it.” That might come if she continues her upward trajectory. Last year she played in her first WTA final (Eastbourne), appeared in three semifinals and

Jamie Hampton beat Czech Kristyna Pliskova yesterday.

made the third round at both the US Open and Wimbledon and fourth round at Roland Garros. Those results helped “prove I can compete with the top players and win”. Flipkens also came to Auckland on the back of her best year on tour highlighted by a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon and more than US$1.1 million in prizemoney.

The 27-year-old Belgian refused to look too far ahead in the draw, despite the loss of so many seeds, and was even unaware of who she was due to play next. In fact, Flipkens has tried to shut herself off from most things this week - she went to bed at 10.30pm on New Year’s Eve with earplugs in the hope of sleeping through the fireworks. - APNZ

In brief

Rising Romance on Derby trail Rising Romance has a long way to go to match the deeds of a former Donna and Dean Logan stable star, but she’s heading in the right direction. She added the Gr.2 New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes at Ellerslie on Wednesday to her record and will now progress toward the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby won last year by Habibi. “It was a big blow to the stable when she (Habibi) was sold, but we’ve been fortunate enough to get this filly,” Donna Logan said. Like Habibi, Rising Romance is by Ekraar and won the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial at Ellerslie and she would have tried to emulate her former barn-mate’s victory in the Gr.2 Sound Championship Stakes but for a wide gate. “I wanted to run her against the boys and the draw was the only question mark,” Logan said.

Rising Romance.

“It’s forward to the Derby and she’ll follow the Habibi trail. “The further she goes the better she’ll get.” Rising Romance had finished third in the Gr.2 Eight Carat Stakes on Boxing Day with a performance that convinced Logan of her staying good potential. “I was very pleased with the

run and it ticked the box of her getting over a trip,” she said. Rising Romance was ridden closer to the pace on New Year’s Day and she finished off strongly in the straight to win by a length and a-half. “She always showed a lot and keeps stepping up,” successful rider Michael Coleman said. “She gave me a lovely ride and

relaxed and quickened up when I asked her.” Lucia Valentina chased gamely in the straight to run second in her final New Zealand appearance before joining Kris Lees’ Sydney stable and Royal Dominance took third money from Her Choice, who made the front early in the run home. – NZ Racing Desk.

Sydney beckons Speed machine Vinnie Eagle has beaten the best in New Zealand and now the precocious youngster is set to put his perfect record to the test in Sydney. The Tony Pike and Mark Donoghue-trained two-year-old was put aside after a debut victory in the spring and at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day he returned in style with a slick performance to claim the Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Eclipse Stakes. “He won at Ruakaka and wasn’t overly impressive, but he has strengthened up a lot since and his lead-up trial was super,” Pike said. “He’s eligible for the Inglis Classic at Rosehill on January 18 and that’s always been his long-term target. We’ll get through Sydney and then he’ll come back and we might look at the Sires’ Produce races.”

Pike makes amends Cambridge horseman Tony Pike delivered a super late Christmas present to parents Wayne and Vicki when he and training partner Mark Donoghue produced Chintz to score narrowly in the Gr. 2 Rich Hill Mile. Bred and owned by the Pikes, the four-year-old Savabeel mare backed up from a narrow defeat on Boxing Day to collar pacemaker Jubilate in the shadows of the post with outsider Fortune Knight flashing home late for third. Settled on a steady speed set by Jubilate and Diademe, rider Mark Du Plessis angled Chintz into the middle of the track and a challenging position as the field straightened for the run home.

Disappointment over James McDonald put aside the disappointment of missing a Group One win with the Donna and Dean Logan-trained Durham Town with a superb ride on stablemate Mosquito in the Gr. 2 Scot Thrust City of Auckland Cup. Rain on the day blunted the chances of Durham Town in the Sistema Railway Stakes as he finished a gallant fourth, but it played into the hands of Mosquito who scored by a nose in a driving finish from 2013 Auckland Cup place-getter Chaparrone, with a neck back to Storming The Tower. Race favourite More Than Sacred finished a further length and a-half back in fourth after a brave run on the track that had been softened.

Group One relief for Bounding team Relief was an emotion shared by Ken Kelso and Mark Du Plessis after Bounding had upstaged her older rivals at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day for a richly-deserved Group One victory. The Matamata trainer, who prepares the three-year-old with his wife Bev, and his jockey com-

bined to celebrate at the highest level after the star filly had claimed top honours in the Sistema Railway Stakes. “It was a big call to run her and I’m glad it’s over,” Kelso said. “She really deserved that after what happened at Christchurch and we can forgive

Du Plessis now.” He was referring to Bounding’s defeat in the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton where she was beaten by Costa Viva after racing three wide in the open in an eight horse field. “We decided to freshen her up and run here instead of the

M7 Central Otago harness

Eight Carat,” Kelso said. “I didn’t know whether she would handle it and she has galloped in it a bit at home, but that’s different to a Group One. It’s a huge thrill and she’s a special filly.” Bounding became the first filly since Gold Hope in 1981 to win the Railway.

Family affair Ashburton’s champion skier, Rachel Donaldson, coached 19 youngsters during the Water-ski Lake Hood club’s twoweek school, including Hunter, grandson of Lynn and Malcolm Stewart who once owned the farm the lake is built on. The Stewarts sold the land to the Aquatic Park Society in 1989.

Hunter’s cousin James Moore joined him at the ski-school - his grandmother is Bev Bagrie, Mr Stewart’s sister, who also grew up on the family farm. To add to the family connections story, Josh Hood - grandson of Doug Hood who built the lake, also honed his skills at the summer school.

Anderson record steals the show Jesse Ryder is back - but he was somehow overshadowed by a 23-year-old in his seventh one day international. Corey Anderson stroked a scarcely-believable innings of 131 not out in New Zealand’s win over the West Indies at Queenstown yesterday, breaking the world record for the fastest ODI century. His ton came off 36 balls, beating Shahid Afridi’s 18-yearold record by one delivery. His stay at the crease lasted 51 minutes and spanned 41 balls, good for a strike rate of 279.

He hit 14 sixes, falling two short of the all-time mark. But numbers alone can hardly do justice to a display of hitting that was as brutal as it was sustained. “I guess it’s one of those things that you never really plan on doing when you go out there,” Anderson said after his knock. “It’s nice to have that feeling when you’re out there and getting the out of the middle.” Relegated to something of a footnote amid all the carnage was Ryder. His century took a comparative eternity - 46 balls,

good for sixth-fastest ever. They were Ryder’s first runs in international cricket in almost two years, and his first ton since February 2011, ensuring the New Year began in a much brighter fashion than his previous 12 months. Then there was the match itself. The Black Caps racked up 283-4 and won by 160 runs, for the record, levelling the series at one with two games to come. After steady rain fell all morning, the contest was reduced to 21 overs aside, paving the way for the type of power hitting

that must make a bowler wonder why he even bothered. New Zealand took just five from the first over, the fewest in the innings, and Martin Guptill fell cheaply in the second. Then the fun began. Brendon McCullum set the tone, hitting boundaries from his first five balls before holing out for 33 from 11, evoking memories of his 28-ball 80 at the same venue six years prior. Ross Taylor’s stay was brief but, in hindsight, his wicket was a blessing. It brought Anderson to the crease.

Ryder was already on 41 by that point, demonstrating equal parts force and finesse. In one Ravi Rampaul over - who finished with the sorry figures of 0-64 from three - Ryder opened the blade to run one down past third man before swivelling to pull off his hips for consecutive boundaries. The opener’s timing was impeccable and his hitting clean, bringing up his fastest ever 50 with a straight six. But he was soon surpassed by the man standing at the other end. - APNZ
