u Bulldogs Looking To Bounce Back With a veteran-laden roster, the UNC Asheville volleyball team looks to rebound from a disappointing finish last season with a strong 2015 campaign. The Bulldogs return everyone from last year’s squad – 12 in total – and add two incoming freshman to their 14-man roster. After have zero seniors in 2014, Asheville boasts four final year players, each of whom will be counted one to continue playing major roles this fall. Picked ninth in the Big South Conference’s preseason poll after an 8-22 (4-10 BSC) record last fall, the Bulldogs are looking to show everyone that last season was an anomaly. Since 2002, Asheville has enjoyed winning records in nine seasons, including Big South regular season championships in 2002 and 2009 and three runners-up finishes in conference tournament play during that stretch (2003, 2005, 2006). “This team has grown since last season and the expectation is to improve back to where we know we can be and get into the Big South Conference Tournament,” head coach Frederico Santos stated. “Our players are intent on getting back into the mix and competing for a championship.” The Bulldogs will play nearly half of their matches at home this season, hosting visitors inside the Justice Center for 12 of their 26 contests. The schedule includes hosting the UNC Asheville Invitational on September 10, 11 and 12, welcoming four visiting teams to town that weekend. Asheville’s matchup against New Orleans on Thursday, September 10 as part of their tournament is the only home contest the Bulldogs will play that is not on a Friday or Saturday, offering fans great opportunities to see the Blue and White in action.

Senior leadership will be huge for the Bulldogs in 2015, and Asheville has veteran experience all over the floor. Catherine Lakatos led the team in kills and service aces in 2014 and was second on team in digs as she posted 14 double-doubles last season. Katie Davis led Asheville in assists in 2014. She was fourth in kills on the team and third in digs last season & came within one kill of a triple-double three separate times. Bryn Pfeiffer led the Bulldogs in digs and averaged more than four digs per game in conference matches last season, posting two matches of 30+ digs. Catherine Fischer was in the top five in four different statistical categories last season, including: total kills, kills per set and service aces. Regaining their place in the Big South standings will not be an easy task, but Santos points to the way the Bulldogs finished last year as a sign of what could be coming in 2015. Asheville won three of its last five matches in 2014, including road victories at Campbell and Liberty. The Bulldogs also dropped a tight, 3-2 match against Presbyterian in that time frame. The 2015 schedule includes three of their first five Big South matches – and four of their final six contests – at home inside the Justice Center, something that could bode favorable down the stretch for the Bulldogs. “I look forward to the challenge of the Big South Conference. The league boasts two teams ranked in the top 80 in the country in Radford and Coastal Carolina. The Big South has become very competitive and our team will look to build on our late success last season and keep challenging the conference,” Santos said.

Before UNC Asheville: Julia comes to Asheville from Orland Park, Illinois. In high school, she was an All-Conference selection in the 2014 season. She also received Plainfield North All-Tournament honors. Borschel was a 2015 Illinois State Scholar.

Before UNC Asheville: Cara Joins the Bulldogs from Jupiter, Florida. In 2013, she was a First Team All-Conference selection. In 2014, she was elected 2014 Palm Beach County Player of the Year. She also received State 8A Volleyball Academic Team honors.

Frederico Marcondes (dos Santos) joins the UNC Asheville volleyball team as an assistant volleyball coach for the 2015 season. Marcondes brings a wealth of knowledge to the Bulldogs, having coached at all levels, collegiately and internationally.

9 Marcondes coached most recently at NCAA Division II school Barry University from 2008-2010 under his son, UNC Asheville head coach Frederico Santos, while Santos was the head coach at the Florida school. Marcondes has also been an assistant coach collegiately at the University of South Carolina and University of Oregon and served as the head coach at the University of Nevada-Reno during his career. He has extensive international coaching experience in Brazil, notably in Rio de Janeiro, and has coached teams to over 15 championships over his nearly 40-year coaching career. Marcondes has also coached 14 Brazilian Olympic Team members between the men’s and women’s national teams, including Olympic gold medalists Jackie Silva (Beach Volleyball, 1996 Olympics) and Kerry Pottharst (Beach Volleyball, 200 Olympics).

HC frederico santos • 5th season Frederico Santos, a former assistant coach for UNC Asheville, begins his fifth season at the helm of the Bulldogs in 2015. The former Bulldog assistant came back home in June of 2011 after serving as head coach at Barry University in Miami for three seasons.

1990 and starred for the University of Nevada-Reno club team from 1992-1996 where he was a setter. His club team was ranked fifth nationally by USA Today. In 1998, Santos played for the Reno Volleyball Club team as both a setter and outside hitter, leading the club to the USAV Nationals in Tucson, Ariz. His coaching experience includes stops in Brazil, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland and Reno. Santos coached the Stjarnan Club team in Reykjavik, Iceland. He led the club to a 7-3 record in 2000 and a first place finish in the fall tournament. The team also finished runner-up in the Icelandic Cup and Icelandic Championships. Santos has also worked with the men’s and women’s Brazilian national teams, which are among the best in the world. He earned his degree in the spring of 2007 from UNC Asheville. Santos is married to the former Nathalie Steffen. Nathalie played volleyball for the Bulldogs from 1993 through 1996 and is a 1997 graduate of UNC Asheville. Nathalie’s sister Elissa also played for the Bulldogs and is a member of the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame. Frederico and Nathalie are the proud parents of two children, Gabriel and Tatiana.

Santos has quickly showed that the winning tradition of UNC Asheville volleyball would continue under his guidance. In his four years back in Asheville, Santos has taken two teams to the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament and has seen former Bulldog Rachel Wells lead the nation in digs in 2013, earning her a tryout with the U.S. National Team. In three seasons as head coach at Barry, Santos led the Buccaneers to a 46-31 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament in 2010. A native of Brazil, Santos has more than 20 years of international playing and coaching experience at all levels of the sport. He spent eight seasons at UNC Asheville, including the last three as associate head coach under former head coach Julie Torbett. Santos assisted in all phases of the Bulldog program, including recruiting, on-court coaching, travel and pre-game setup. While at Asheville, Santos helped the Bulldogs to a 135-124 overall record. The Bulldogs reached the Big South Conference Championship match three times during his tenure and won the regular-season championship in 2002. The 2002 team was the most improved team in the country that season as Asheville finished with a 26-8 record. Santos has been playing volleyball all his life beginning with club teams in Rio de Janeiro. He moved to Reno, Nev. in 13

u UNC ASHEVILLE HALL OF FAME UNC Asheville’s Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2003 and has had 12 classes inducted. A total of 40 athletes and administrators have been enshrined. Of those 40 inductees, four are former volleyball players: Ilona Fekete, Danielle Meyer, Elissa Steffen and Loralee Smith. One is a former coach, Lisa Rhodes (inducted in 2012).

Ilona Fekete Thimmer established a tradition of great volleyball at UNC Asheville from 1990-92. She led the Bulldogs to three straight Big South Conference regularseason titles and two straight tournament crowns. She also led the nation in blocks as a sophomore in 1990 and was among the nation’s leaders in that category the next two seasons. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native was the Big South Player of the Year in 1990 and was an all-conference and all-tournament selection for three seasons. She is the school’s all-time leader in total blocks and block solos. Thimmer was inducted into the inaugural class of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame. She and her family reside in Vero Beach, Fla.

Danielle Meyer Harrison was the Bulldogs’ starting setter for four years and is third all-time on the career assist list with 5,187. She helped lead UNC Asheville to three straight Big South Conference regularseason championships and two tournament titles. She was the Co-MVP of the 1992 Big South Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs were 35-6 against Big South opponents during her career. She was an allconference selection twice and was part of the 1991 UNC Asheville team that was selected to the National Invitational Volleyball Championships in Dayton, Ohio. She and her family reside in Illionis.

Elissa Steffen Mount enjoyed a sensational career for the Bulldogs. She is UNC Asheville’s all-time career leader in three different categories. Elissa is the all-time leader in kills (1,775), digs (2,179) and attempts (4,993). She was an all-conference performer as a junior and senior and was a part of two Big South Conference championship teams as a freshman and sophomore. Elissa helped lead UNC Asheville to its first ever post-season tournament as a Division I school when the Bulldogs were selected to participate in the 1991 National Invitational Volleyball Championships. She and her husband Jeremy live in Hawaii with their two children.

Lorelee Smith was a three-time first team Big South All-Conference selection. She completed her career as UNC Asheville and the Big South’s all-time leader in assists with 5,904 and that record still stands today. Lorelee also holds the school and Big South record for most assists in a season with 1,852 set in 1996. She was the 1997 Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and twice earned All-Region All-Academic honors.

Lisa Rhodescoached the Bulldog volleyball program from 1989-1993 and led the Asheville program to three Big South Conference regular-season championships, two tournament titles and the school’s first ever postseason trip in the Division I era. The Bulldogs won the 1990, 1991 and 1992 regular-season titles and compiled a 22-1 Big South regular-season record during those years. Counting Big South Tournament play, Rhodes teams were 29-2. In 1991,Asheville was awarded a berth to the National Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. The Bulldogs were the first volleyball program in Big South history to go to a post-season tournament. In 1992, Asheville finished with a 32-6 record and became the first team in league history to go unbeaten in the regular season and in the league tournament.

The Big South Conference For more than 30 years, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” On April 24, 1983, Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South and less than four months later on August 21, the Big South Conference was formed when Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop committed to the new League. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted fullfledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid -- an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 18 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to unprecedented new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership with double-digit member institutions for six consecutive years. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 800 annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 325 All-Americans, has reached the quarterfinals in the FCS Playoffs as well as the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball; has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf; had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship eight times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection; had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals; had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country; had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice; has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006; has had nine NFL Draft picks; and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an atlarge participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years

as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reached the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2 0 1 0 - 1 1 , Chelanga won two more NCAA N a t i o n a l Championships (cross country, o u t d o o r 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. In 2012-13, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -- for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a Leaguerecord four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. This past season produced the League’s first FCS playoff quarterfinalist, had four postseason wins in men’s basketball, had its second women’s golf team qualify for nationals, and tied the Conference-record with 13 Academic All-Americans. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams played in the NBA from 2010-14, Campbell’s Eric Griffin signed with the Dallas Mavericks this past summer, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won nine PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Two former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2014 (Eddie Butler and Tommy La Stella), while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA three years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. As part of the League’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2013-14, All-Decade Teams were recognized for the first time in each sport. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past five years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 120 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last five years.

The $42 million Wilma Sherrill Center and Kimmel Arena opened in 2012. Kimmel Arena serves as a premier location for NCAA basketball games. In addition to being the home of the Bulldogs, it has hosted the Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Championship, the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship and the Southern Conference Wrestling Tournament.

The Justice Center Pool was completely renovated in June 2012 to welcome the return of the UNC Asheville women’s swimming team. The six-lane, 25-yard pool has been completely outfitted to host home competitions.

The Justice Center has been the home to the UNC Asheville women’s volleyball team since 1982. With a capacity of 1,000 this is a great venue to cheer on the Bulldogs. The Justice Center has hosted six Big South Conference volleyball tournaments over the years and was renovated in 2011 including a completely new playing surface.

Home to the UNC Asheville men’s and women’s tennis team, the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown is located just five minutes from campus. With indoor and outdoor courts, the ARC gives the Bulldog teams one of the best facilities in the Southeast.

The Karl Straus Track serves as the training and copetition site for the men’s and women’s track and field programs. The facility saw improvements at its grand reopening in spring 2015 include grandstand seating, restrooms, a press box, concessions and upgrades to the lighting. The track’s surface has also recently been resurfaced.

Janet R. Cone, who has served as UNC Asheville’s athletics director since 2004, is the only woman currently serving on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee that selects and seeds the teams for the March Madness Tournament.

Cone previously served as associate athletics director for Samford University, and also coached women’s basketball at Samford, Western Carolina University and Mars Hill College. Cone holds a bachelor’s degree from Furman University and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. She was one of just 28 Directors of Athletics to be named as Under Armour AD of the Year in 2013 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Cone, who also serves as the Senior Administrator for University Enterprises, oversaw the successful opening of the Wilma M. Sherrill Center which houses the Kimmel Arena, a new tennis facility, and the expansion of the Karl Straus Track Facility. In addition, a campaign to build on-campus baseball and soccer stadiums is underway. More importantly, the Bulldog athletic department Academic Progress Rate is 977, and Bulldog studentathletes have an overall 3.108 GPA and a Graduation Rate of 85%. A sustainable revenue plan has been implemented to increase the athletics budget from $2.1M to $5.7M and will add another $1.2M over the next two years. Bulldogs have also won Big South Conference Championships in Baseball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, and Women’s Soccer and perform thousands of hours of community service each year.

In addition, Cone has rigorously worked to improve Gender Equity, and earlier this year, she announced the addition of women’s golf as the 16th NCAA Division I athletics program at UNC Asheville. When women’s golf tees off in 2016-17, they will become the second sport added in the last five years.
