Emerging from these restrictive times, we look to the importance of the wellness of our community and renew our commitment to our Strategic Plan Together Toward 2025 – Ensemble vers 2025.
The disruption of the 2020-21 school year saw the Ashbury community adapt quickly and effectively to a new teaching and learning paradigm. Although far from ideal, our faculty and staff ensured continued learning in students in-person, online or in a hybrid model. Thanks go out to all in our community who supported the many transitions required in response to the pandemic.

At the same time, Ashbury was able to advance some of its core strategic objectives, especially around pluralism, with over 80 community-wide constituents involved in various design teams. This will remain a continuum of focus as we implement recommendations that build on Ashbury’s welcoming and inclusive nature. The completion of our Centre for Science and Innovation saw students benefit immediately from new and inspiring spaces. Various projects around the school saw facilities improved during a quieter time on campus. Financial Assistance continued to grow at Ashbury, particularly helpful during uncertain times and broadening access to the Ashbury experience. 1
Message from Kevin Pidgeon Chair, Board of Governors It is with great honour and humility that I have had the opportunity to serve as the 38th Chair of the Ashbury Board of Governors over the past school year. To say that the past year had been “different” would be a monumental understatement. Earlier this year, I asked the 2021 graduates to consider their Ashbury experience as one of the greatest treasures they possess. It is a treasure that requires much work and effort and will provide great rewards. It would be remiss of me not to commend the students for the tremendous tenacity shown in pursuit of an Ashbury education, despite the enormous challenges of a global pandemic. Kudos to the leadership team, teachers, students, and the entire community for tremendous accomplishments under some of the most adverse conditions ever. Specifically, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the teachers and staff for their innovative work over the school year in adapting to delivering a world-class education in various ways, including Ashbury’s distance learning format. I have been truly privileged to have a front-row seat to the unique and inspirational environment 2
created here. During my tenure at the College, including assisting as a football coach, it became apparent that the community’s culture is something very special. This culture of excellence is not something specific to the sports field but is illustrated throughout school life. Whether students happen to be one of our incredibly gifted musicians, refining their skills in the magnificent new CLC, or a young scientist enjoying the path to discovery in the newly completed CSI building, the school culture is the underlying bond that unifies Ashbury. For the most part, the College has managed to achieve its overall goals and remained minimally affected by the pandemic. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the entire Ashbury community for persevering this year. The adversity you faced in the last two years is something that any previous cohort has rarely seen. I know our students will draw on this experience as they go forward and make the world a better place while enjoying all that it has to offer along the way. Probitas, Virtus, Comitas – Honesty, Courage and Kindness, as during these turbulent times, these three words will serve you well.
Message from Hugh Scott ’88 Chair, Foundation Board There is strength in philanthropy, and this was clearly exemplified across the Ashbury community over the 2020-2021 year. This strength is drawn from the collective effort of individuals who strive to make an impact on the lives of others. Donors responded to the call for support in solidarity; I am inspired by the response from the Ashbury community. As at June 30, 2021, the Ashbury College Endowment achieved a year-end value of $15.7 million, its highest year-end closing ever, rebounding well after market fluctuations over the last 18 months. As the custodian of the Ashbury College Endowment fund, the Foundation Board oversees a diversified portfolio and seeks to minimize the impact of market fluctuations. Through generous support from Ashbury donors and prudent oversight of the endowment, Ashbury maintained its goal of providing 10% of
current students with needs-based financial assistance at an average of 50% of fees. A new tradition was established with Ashbury’s inaugural 1891 Day (day of giving) where our community demonstrated incredible support for needsbased financial assistance. Support of the annual giving program more than doubled from the previous year, with increased participation from alumni, parents, and Ashbury faculty and staff. Connections between donors and student recipients of needsbased financial assistance were strengthened as donors and students connected virtually through videoconferencing, emails, letters, and in-person visits, when safe to do so. Many former recipients of financial assistance are choosing to pay it forward to the next generation of students, creating a virtuous cycle, deepening engagement between alumni and students, and helping expand access to the Ashbury experience. Thank you to all who supported Ashbury College Foundation this year.
