YOU MAKE ASDSO

MORE COMMITTED THAN EVER

Thank you for becoming an Active Member of ASDSO, the leading national non-profit association dedicated to dam and levee safety. Since ASDSO was founded in 1983, we have worked to establish and strengthen state dam safety programs and improve interstate and intergovernmental communication about dam safety. Together, we have continued to advance this mission and to hold ourselves to a high standard. ASDSO members believe we have a responsibility to make a difference in our communities and nation by decreasing the risks associated with dams. ASDSO supports a diverse membership who are unified by mission. Your professional and mission-driven interests are supported by ASDSO. This booklet is an intro to maximizing your membership, finding opportunities, and discovering your role in ‘building a future where all dams are safe.’

WHO ARE THE

ASDSO MEMBERS?

Iowa State Representative Jon Garton, who had a growing interest in video production, worked with the Dam Owner Outreach Committee to explore ways to create videos specific to dam owners. The work led to what would become ASDSO’s Dam Owner Academy, a growing series of educational YouTube videos.

Young professional, Lee Mauney, is an avid reader and discovered many books that he felt could interest ASDSO’s membership. Lee reached out to the Journal of Dam Safety Editorial Committee and began the ASDSO Book Club, a review of books that now appear in each quarterly issue of the journal.

Following the 2019 failure of Spencer Dam in Nebraska, the owners, the state program, and ASDSO leadership saw the importance of discovering and sharing the causes and lessons learned. Mark Baker, the Dam Failures and Incident Committee co-chair, led what would be ASDSO’s first independent dam failure investigation.
