Brush Country Bulls consists of six like-minded Texas seedstock producers: Filegonia Cattle Company, Ford’s Double S Ranch, Premier Beef, RX Simbrah, Tom Brothers Ranch, and DA Cattle. While each of our ranching operations is managed independently, we all share the common goal of providing high quality, performance-tested bulls that will improve your bottom line.

The combination of Simmental and Angus genetics continues to gain industry wide acceptance. Both breeds are committed to using science to select for traits that affect the commercial cattlemen. Along with Simmental and Angus genetics, a number of these bulls have one-eighth to three-eighths Brahman influence. It is no secret that Brahman-influenced cattle thrive in hot, humid environments. If you retain replacement females for your herd, you should consider our selection of SimAngus™ HT and Simbrah bulls.This is the largest offering in the country of performance tested SimAngusTM HT and Simbrah bulls. Bull development took place at Tom Brothers Ranch in lots large enough to allow the bulls adequate space for exercise.The bulls were continuously evaluated for performance and disposition. A nutritionist was consulted to create rations that achieve gain without sacrificing rumen health and foot soundness. All bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam and are ready to work. HEALTH Herd Veterinarian – Dr. Ronnie Ussery, Atascosa Veterinary Clinic Bulls were dewormed with Dectomax Injectable 10/29/13. Bulls were vaccinated with Ultrabac-7, ViraShield 6, and StayBred VL5 on 11/18/13. Bulls are current on their respiratory, 7-way, and vibrio/lepto vaccinations. Bulls conform to Texas Animal Health Commission standards for Trichimoniasis Free Certification. Health papers will be in order for bulls to pass for both interstate and international travel. International health papers and health testing will be provided at cost to international buyers. All bulls selling have been fertility tested and scrotal measured and are guaranteed breeders. TRUCKING $50 off bulls hauled sale day. If purchaser requests at time of settlement, we will assist in making delivery of bulls. Free delivery within 150 miles. For bulls traveling beyond 150 miles, the most economical trucking available will be arranged, and the 150 mile credit will be applied towards the delivery cost. RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST Buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value and ½ semen interest of any bull purchased in this sale while respective owner will retain ½ semen interest. This semen interest entitles Brush Country Bulls owners to ½ of the revenue of any semen sold. If a bull is sold to a third party, Brush Country Bulls owners’ interest remains and it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure semen interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. Brush Country Bull owners will not be responsible for expenses related to semen collection of any bull purchased unless a mutual agreement is reached for expenses prior to semen collection. Brush Country Bull owners retained semen interest includes the right to collect semen on purchased bulls at the owners expense and the buyer’s convenience. BRUSH COUNTRY GUARANTEE Every bull is guaranteed to be sound on sale day and has passed a breeding soundness exam performed within 30 days of the sale. Every bull selling carries a 100% guarantee for one breeding season, provided the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health, not to exceed 120 days beyond sale day. In the event a customer has a problem with a bull (health, injury or death) prior to or during the bull’s first breeding season, the customer should immediately contact a Brush Country Bulls representative to report a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem will be required and Brush Country Bulls reserves the right to have the bull returned if deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed upon quality will be provided if Brush Country Bulls has one available with delivery distance to the customer not to exceed the 150 mile free delivery. SIMMENTAL $ INDEXES Though EPDs allow from the comparison of genetic levels from many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in – blending EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes. All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained, and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

WHAT IS A SIMANGUSTM AND A SIMANGUSTM HT The American Simmental Association (ASA) recently added the designation of SimAngusTM HT (Heat Tolerant) to their promotion. SimAngusTM HT is a SimAngusTM with at least 1/8 Brahman. A SimAngusTM, to be exact, must have at least 1/4 Angus and 1/4 Simmental and the combination of the two needs to add to 3/4 or more. To get the SimAngusTM designated to HT, the animal must possess at least 1/8 Brahman blood.

American Angus Association EPD and $ Index Definitions PRODUCTION EPDs

CARCASS EPDs

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Group/progeny (Carc Grp/ Pg and Usnd Grp/Pg) reflects the number of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultrasound progeny included in the analysis.

$VALUE INDEXES

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

$Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

MATERNAL EPDs

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG) $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG) $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Developmental Duplication (DD) DD is an abnormality that has long been recognized in Angus cattle. It is simple recessive in its inheritance and very few affected animals have ever been seen in the industry. There are a significant number of cattle that show no symptoms or negative affects even in the homozygous state. To assist you with your selection decisions, we have listed all tested and potential carriers for DD. DD has only been found in cattle of Angus origin. DDC bulls can be used on cows that do not have Angus in them with no problem. Bulls that are not listed are animals that do not have carriers in their pedigree. Genetic conditions are believed to be found in all animals. With enhanced DNA technology scientists are able to identify more and more of these conditions. With this information we can make better breeding decisions. A genetic test can be requested of any bull you are interested in purchasing that is DDP. 2013 Brush Country Bull Sale – 27

About the Brush Country Group Working together is essential to success, especially in the harsh, dry climate of the Brush Country in south Texas. Located about an hour south of San Antonio, just off Interstate 37 near Campbellton, the historic Tom Brothers Ranch is the home to the Brush Country Bull development and sale. “Our family began ranching here in 1857, but started in the seedstock business here in the late 1950’s. We are extremely excited about the opportunity to restart the program with the help of so many other experienced breeders,” says Ellen Tom of Tom Brothers.

Ellen represents the 6th generation of family to operate the ranch and along with her uncle, Philip Tom manage the cows, feedlot, hunting and other enterprises on the ranch. In total there are six breeders cooperating to populate the bull development center and offer a seedstock package with options designed specifically for the needs of producers in the area.

The “dean” of breeders involved in the group is Sally Buxkemper owner of RX Simbrah, Ballinger Texas. Having been in the seedstock business herself for 50 years, she was a pioneer in the use of Brahman genetics and one of the original developers of the American Simbrah. Today Sally still produces heat adapted seedstock using Simmental in combination with red and black Angus. By focusing on economically important trait improvement, retained heterosis and cows that thrive in southern climates, Sally and RX Simbrah have maintained a leadership position in the genetics business. Sally was a 2011 inductee into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame by the American Quarter Horse Association for her years of service to the ranching business in this country. You’ll find Premier Beef and the Brad Leen family ranch in Southeast Texas between Austin and College Station near the town of Thrall. The Bermuda pastures mixed with patches of good farmland make this great country for cattle and agriculture production. “We chose this part of the country because of the opportunity for our family business and the potential to make and impact in the beef industry here in Texas”, said Brad. “The Simmental business was incredibly successful here back in the 80’s, but was too slow to make practical change. Today we offer a much improved product with great calving ease, solid color and do-ability in addition to the growth and muscle customers expect”. 28 – 2013 Brush Country Bull Sale

For Ford’s Double S Ranch at Thrall, Texas a positive change came in the late 90’s when Tom and Sandy Ford made the move to black Simmental genetics in response to a changing beef business. With the return to the ranch of Dustin Ford and his wife Heidi after graduating from Tarleton State University, infusions of new cattle and ideas came together to help shape the operation that is today. According to Dustin, “Since that time, we’ve added SimAngus to our purebred program and have set significant genetic focus on carcass value traits in addition to providing the problem free maternal genetics that our customer’s need to be successful.” Dustin and Heidi have two sons Justin and Cameron. The Dusty Ford Family of Ford’s Double S Ranch The ranch is owned by Tom and Sandy Ford. With more than 30 years experience in the restaurant industry in addition to the seedstock business, The Ford’s bring a wealth of understanding as to how the beef supply chain functions and how crucial starting with high value genetics is to the profitability of the entire system. Tom started his career with Sirloin Stockade corp. and is now the owner/C.E.O. of the company. Sirloin Stockade owns/operates three different restaurant concepts, Sirloin Stockade, Montana Mike's and Coyote Canyon.

Filegonia Cattle Co. is located in central Texas near Troy. Owned and operated by Joe and Beth Mercer, the operation strives to breed and improve a heat adapted combination of Simmental with Red Angus genetics, for more than 20 years. “This combination really works for our customers. Whether it is in the traditional 5/8, 3/8 combination of purebred Simbrah, of an updated percentage based on functionality and value, these cattle now offer a great combination of maternal, longevity traits and terminal value,” says Beth.

DA Cattle is committed to producing Angus cattle that are proven performers for cattlemen in Texas. DA Cattle is owned by Charlie Murray and Paul Aelvoet and located in D'Hanis, Texas. DA Cattle's Angus herd is raised and developed under the harsh conditions associated with south Texas. Breed leading Angus genetics are selected to produce cattle for top performance and eye appeal, not just EPDs. DA Cattle's goal is to produce cattle that are uniform, fertile, and loaded with economically important production traits. The 2nd Annual Brush Country Bull Sale is scheduled for December 14, 2013.
