Cattlemen, I would like to welcome you to our 14th annual bull sale! It always amazes me when I look back from year to year what changes we have made in our program and what hasn’t changed. This year is the first year we will be having our own independent sale day at Aberdeen Livestock. We felt to better serve our customers we needed the bulls available in a bit more relaxed setting prior to the sale and without the distraction of bred cows going by the lanes and the fear of someone getting hit by a gate while looking at bulls. For these reasons we moved to a Thursday sale. This year, for the 4th consecutive year, we have met the requirements and have been acknowledged as a Performance Advocate of the American Simmental Association. This program was developed 4 years ago to acknowledge breeders that consistently submit data for every cow in the herd for 6 different traits. We are very proud of this distinction as this year we are 1 of only 38 herds in the US to achieve this. Again this year we are also enrolled in THE program which tracks every cow in our herd through the ASA. We feel the reasons to do both are pretty straight forward, to be able to make change you first must generate accurate and useful data in a structured way on many individuals so you can compare results of individuals. The bulls were weaned this year on Sept 1st and have been developed on a high roughage total mixed ration. As usual we are not in a rate of gain contest rather a developmental process allowing enough time for skeletal growth, muscle development and scrotal development. These bulls will not fall apart on you when you get them home, guaranteed. I want to reiterate one of our core beliefs - “You should never have to worry about a bulls feet going bad because of overfeeding”. Our vaccination schedule is very rigid and we work closely with Dr Holly Roe-Johnson with our herd. We are on a modified live program with several boosters each year. All cows are Johnes tested each fall at preg check time. We believe this is another advantage to our herd; we make every effort possible to eliminate the transmission of this or any disease. When you look thru the catalog you will notice the Lot number coincides directly with the tattoo of the bull. We do this for a couple reasons. First it allows bulls to be cataloged by birth date, second it eliminates another tag and expense putting in Lot tags and most importantly for me and my family we have gotten to know these individuals by their tattoos. When we go to lot numbers it is difficult for us to relearn pedigrees by a new number, Sorry. You will also notice in the footnotes I speak a lot of cow families and past production. We feel it is vital to pass on any information that can help you select the correct bull for your needs. Those of you who retain your own females I try and point out bulls out of cow lines that are trouble free with good maternal traits. It is the same for producers who just want to wean pounds and I try and point out those growth bulls. Many bulls can do a good job of both without sacrificing much performance. Again this year we will take the bulls home after the sale and feed at no charge until March 25th. At that time we will semen check and deliver to your ranch. If you elect to take the bulls home simply have him tested by a licensed vet and mail the copy of your invoice to us and we will pay for it. As usual we stand behind our cattle 100%! Bulls are available for viewing anytime at the ranch south of Veblen. We will be hauling bulls to Aberdeen Tuesday the 4th in the afternoon if you wish to look at them there. Here is something a bit different. A Club King sired calf out of a registered Angus cow we purchased from Triangle J Ranch in Nebraska. This bull has less bone than most Club King's and is very neat and tidy in his makeup. He is what a composite bull should be: A blend of top performing individuals from different breeds.
