◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆ BEGGER’S DIAMOND V RANCH

Greetings Isn’t it amazing how the years fly by, it just seems like we just held our sale, and here it is again. They say time flies and I am starting to grasp on to that meaning. This past year is one to remember, as fast paced and busy as ever. Cattle prices seem to keep climbing, who would have ever thought that we would be selling steer calves right off the cow for a $1,000 to $1,200 a head. It is record breaking, but so is the cost of operating. Pay weight still is king even at today’s market prices, cattle that weight heavy bring more dollars per head, than light weight cattle. The year 2013 will go down in the history books as one of agriculture’s most trying and rewarding years. This past spring was a tough one it stayed cold and wet during calving causing some problems along the way. Although it turned dry early on and it looked like there would be little to no grass and hay at turn out time, it didn’t look good. By the end of May the rains came and the grass grew, the hay was the best I can remember, crops in our area were excellent as a whole. We got into summer and rains were trimly. Grass was lush and tall. It stayed green into late fall, so we did not wean calves very early. The bull calves came off the cows October 7, 5 weeks later than normal. For this reason they are a little lighter than normal, but still stout and have the makings to be some of the best we have produced. Cattle around our ranch are bred to survive on little or no extra feed if mother nature cooperates. We never pulled the heifer calves off the cows until November 26th, they came in fat and heavy. We turned the cows back out and never fed them anything until later December, we brought them home December 23rd, to start feeding. Even then we have 73 head of cows left out, never fed them a bale of hay until Christmas Eve. They have been on their own in deep snow and several minus 20-30 degree days and up to minus 56 wind chills, digging out a living and doing very well. The breed back on these cows was very good, only 15 opens out of 350 cows exposed for spring calving. The fall calving cows again calved out in the pasture including the 2 yr old heifers again our death loss was only 3 calves out of 170 cows calved and there was 4 sets of twins so we are still batting 100. We did not start feeding the fall calvers until the second week in December, as a whole they look great. The severe cold is hard on the calves, but they still look good. The cattle industry is in good shape to make a little extra profit, so I hope that everyone positions themselves to use the best genetics available. Breeding cattle that work on the range is still one of the most profitable decisons a rancher can make for themselves. There are so many multipliers of cattle that focus on one or 2 traits. I don’t think that is healthy, a good blend of traits is where it is at. We believe that first of all we need to take care of the rancher. Cattle have to be efficient and be able to survive and breed up early in order for them to be profitable. They need to raise big efficient calves that are in demand and bring market topping prices. Anyway you cut the pie, pay weight is still what pays the rancher’s bills. The industry is preaching end product, the packers say carcass is the way to go, most AI studs talk EPD’s, all is good if we use a common sense approach, but what pays you, the rancher, is cattle that can survive the tough harsh environments. Cattle that breed on time, produce a live healthy calf, and wean calves that press down the scale. EPD’s are a guide line the biggest numbers are not always the best. True breeders of cattle know how to blend all the traits so all can be profitable. What I am trying to say, is buy the bulls that will sire daughters that have staying power. Buy your bulls from seed stock breeders that know how to look at and breed cattle that can survive when times and weather conditions get harsh. These are the cattle that will pay the bills. I believe that cross breeding is the easiest way to add extra profit to your bottom line. Too many times I see and hear breed associations and seed stock producers claim you don’t need to cross breed. This is not science, it is greed. Every test on straight breeding verses cross breeding leads to cross breeding being the most profitable. Calves put on more weight, cattle convert feed better, and cows stay in production longer by crossbreeding. I believe that a Simmental Angus animal is hard to beat, and the test stations and University studies back that up. Today Sim Angus cattle bring premiums and

are in demand in the sale barn, feedlots, and on the rail, add some Simmental to a set of Angus or British cows, and watch your weaning weights and bottom line improve. You will really notice there will be less small peewee cut back. By cross breeding it just seems the little fly weight cattle disappear. We believe that we can help you find that profit driven animal. When you look at this offering look at the way they are designed. They are raised in the big country without creep feed and they still weigh heavy. The dams of these bulls are moderate sized, not big horsey coarse cattle that need extra feed when it gets tough out . Udder quality and disposition are some things we take seriously, they have to have good udders and a brain or they don’t survive this outfit. Don’t get me wrong, there are times problems arise and if they do, we are here to make it right. If you don’t get along with them, we will take care of you it’s that simple. I had a man that has used nothing but Angus for decades, buys 3 Simmental bulls last spring, his comment was boy these bulls stay in shape and are so gentle. Another first time customer said our bulls all came in sound and in good condition. He also bought 3 from another source and every one came in lame and sore footed. I believe that is the difference in how we develop them. The guys that clip our bulls commented, you are one of only a few breeders that we clip for that isn’t afraid to put a band on a bull right up to sale time for disposition. They said most breeders don’t do that. They also commented that these bulls just walk out of the chute, they don’t get upset very often. I take these comments as a complement, but we also take them seriously. We have been working the bulls getting the ready for the sale. We have removed a couple bulls that we felt needed to be culled for various reasons, by doing this we feel that the bulls that make the sale will be top herd bulls prospects. I want to thank all of our past bull buying customers, it is a privilege to work with you. To those of you that are first time customers or just looking, thank you for taking the time to look our offering over, I think you will like what you see. After you purchase a bull, we will keep him free of charge until April 1st. He will be delivered free of charge within reason, and have a breeding soundness exam at no charge to you. Unlike most places, the bull is not your responsibility as soon as the gavel drops. When you buy a bull at Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we take the responsibility to keep him sound, healthy and alive until you have him in your possession. If he dies or gets hurt, we will replace him or give you credit on a bull next year. We will do what is right and get your cows bred. Our doors are always open and we welcome your visit or call. If you would like, come look at the bulls before the sale, come see how they are developed in large pens, so they can exercise and move around. Come see their mothers and see how they are maintained. We just ask that you do it before sale day, so we can take the time you need. Sale day is busy, but we want to meet you and are on hand to answer questions, and help you choose the right bull for your program. If you have questions, please come up and ask us, we are here to help. After the sale, we will have a social to relax and visit. If you have time we would enjoy having you stay for awhile, have steak sandwich and a refreshment. If you need to get back home, grab a sandwich and a pop or water for the road. Again thanks for choosing us as your seedstock supplier.

The time has come to make room for a new generation. After spending over 7 years working construction, with 4½ years in remote Alaska, we welcome John back to the ranch. On June 22nd, John married a great young lady named Alicia. They decided that it was time to come back to the lower 48s to raise their family. They made the announcement that they were adding to the family tree in May. It seems that it has a double limb, as the Doc said it’s twins. Grandma and Grandpa can’t be more excited to have them come home, so that we can see the kids grow up near family and on the ranch. It is exciting and time to add some young blood to make every day operations work a little smoother.

Results will be available sale day or call, we will forward them to you.

This bull is one of the High Octane bulls, he will definitely sire pay weight and performance. He ratioed 114 at weaning with a powerful 847 pound 205 weight. His dam is a calf raiser, she weans heavy year after year. This bull is for the cowman that demands heavy weaning calves.

(The advise I gave my kids when they were growing up) Whenever you are about to do something, think of your mother, if she would approve, do it, if she wouldn’t, it’s probably better left alone. Remember whatever you do, can’t be undone. The way you conduct yourself will be how you are remembered. Be a leader, not a follower. Take care of your friends and each other, if they need help or advice, do what is right, even if you get ridiculed, and it seems unpopular. 9 Begger’s Diamond V Ranch Big Sky Genetic Source Bull Sale Sale

This Pioneer son is one to check out. He was on his way to be one of the top elite bulls. His dam ended up with hardware and we lost her in May, from that time on he was on his own; no creep, no milk. He is without a doubt the bull calf that will sire more power than he shows, although he looks pretty good anyway. If you want one of the best genetic packages here is one to consider; excellent genetics and excellent opportunity wrapped up in this bull.

This calf should add fleshing ability and stoutness along with milk. Use him on British cows to add pay weight and power to a set of calves. He is out of a very good, excellent uddered dam that is becoming a top cow. His sire is unknown, as he is out of one of our past sale bulls. They got out with the cows, and this guy is the result.

RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST IN BULLS:

Testicle Measurements:

You will notice that we are selling 3/4 interest and full possession in all bulls in this offering. This means we are retaining a 1/4 revenue sharing semen interest in all the bulls. This semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles Begger’s Diamond V Ranch to 1/4 of the revenues of any semen sold. It means the bull is in your control andpossession unless otherwise stated or for a mutually agreed upon handling of the bull for promotional purposes. You get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch retained semen interest remains even if the bull, or any interest in the bull, is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest if the bull is ever sold. Any semen you choose to collect as an ‘insurance policy’ on your bull for your own in herd use, is 100% yours. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will not be responsible for expenses related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased.

The scrotal circumference of each bull was tape-measured on December 15, 2012. The scrotal measurements were adjusted to yearling, and sometimes will vary one way or another as actual yearlings. We guarantee our bulls 100% for fertility, unless damage is induced at your ranch, and then it’s out of our control.

Unless a mutual agreement is reached for these expenses prior to promotion and semen collection,. Cost incurred in collecting semen for Begger’s Diamond V Ranch within herd use will be the responsibility of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch. Any semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the new owner of the possession interest in the bull. If you the buyer decides that you would like to own 100% of the semen rights, simply add 25% of the bulls purchase price to your settlement. This will entitle you to 100% of the bull’s future semen sales. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will still retain the right to collect 200 units of semen for within herd use at our expense.

Suggested Guidelines for using Yearling Bulls: We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will perform better, over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls. Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 pounds per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season. Where possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time or as soon as possible, remove the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength to compete with older bulls for feed and space. You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.

Begger’s Diamond V Ranch Big Sky Genetic Source Bull Sale Sale

About the bulls: This year proved to be a good one, the grass was plenty and hay piled up. This past fall was very busy and the grazing was at its best late into the fall. It seemed like we were behind in our fall work, and so we never pulled the bull calves off the cows in September as usual, we finally pulled them off the cows on October 8th, so they were put on gain test 5 weeks later than normal. I believe that they may be a little lighter than usual, but I feel that they are in excellent shape and are expressing their genetic potential well. This set of calves has been a super set to work around, they are very easy to work with and have a very calm disposition as a whole. We have been feeding them a TMR of corn, peas, and a pellet vitamin pack from Hubbard Feeds, along with ground hay and haylage. They have had no health issues at all. They have been put through the test as far as weather conditions are concerned, big swing in the temp certainly is not the most desirable feeding conditions. There were days when the temperature swing went from 30 above, to -20 to -30 degrees below zero in 12 hours, and then back the other way a few days later, I don’t know it seems like this pattern lasted all winter. How they can handle these swings and changes as well as they have, but they definitely handled these conditions better than we could have expected. These cattle were born and raised in extreme conditions and are the proof that when mother nature throws you the worst, they can survive even the harshest winter weather. Please note that the spring born bulls have never ate a bite of creep feed in their life, and they still posted excellent weaning weights. On test they were set up to gain about 3.5 a day, they have exceeded the average on the ration designed to gain 3.5 I believe this is a testament to the efficiency you can expect these bulls to possess.

The fall bulls likewise were put through a tough winter on the cows, and spring was very sloppy, so it was hard to get them weaned and put on test like we would have liked. We felt that they would be better served left out on the cow, then in a sloppy wet yard. For this reason the test on these bulls was very short. They were weaned and put back out on grass within 3 weeks of weaning, they were never supplemented other than lick tubs until they were brought back in late October to be conditioned for the sale. They we very sound and are not over fatted, they will be ready for heavy service. You may notice that there is a bigger age span in the fall born this year, we had a bull get injured and we never noticed that he was not getting cows serviced. When I finally realized it, these cows were either going to be open or I had to put another bull in and get the bred for November calving. Only the cows in that pasture were exposed that late, most did get bred. For this reason, there is a pen of young aged fall born. This past year all of those cows caught back up and all calved by the end of October, showing the fertility they possess. We believe that when cattle are expected to work for a living and are not pampered, they will become a better more profitable animal. It seems that when you over feed or pamper cows, they seem to expect a hand out every time the conditions are less than favorable. Thus costing you more to keep them going. Yes we do put up hay and feed , and yes we do use it, when it is necessary.

Where do we go from here. The Simmental breed has stepped up to the challenge the past few years and has jumped through many of the hoops that at one time were stumbling blocks and pit falls for the breed. It wasnít very long ago that the word Simmental was associated with hard calving, hard keeping, rat tailed elephants of unpredictable colors, cattle that get sick in the feedlots With the help and focus of aggressive cattle breeders that had a vision along with our ASA staff. We changed many of those perceptions and realities. Today the Simmental breed has positioned itself to be the number one choice of the continental breeds. Why the change of attitude among commercial cattlemen, feeders and packers? The reason is, we have changed. The breed has changed and today we have cattle that are very prediciatable in calving ease, color, polled traits and still we maintained excellent growth and improved our overall mature size and increased the efficiency and profit ability of the Simmental breed, but at the same time I am concerned some breeders are forgetting the past and are putting more birth weight and mature size and frame back into their genetics. I don’t want to go back there again and I don’t feel that you do either. Today the buzz word is CARCASS. How do we fit into the beef industries picture? Very well as a whole, but we need to keep improving our cattle in each and every generation. Today our industry has very little margin for error. We as producers of food have very tight margins for profit and still the perception of the vast majority of the world’s population is food is to high priced, they donít understand or care what it takes. All they want is to be fed economically. So how do we improve and keep up with technology and the fast paced demands that the world presents and still stay profitable? It seems like it was just yesterday that ultrasound came into the picture, some felt it was gospel, some feel it is not very accurate and some don’t care. Some feel that we lost our efficiency in our cow herds due to high selection of carcass traits. Some claim they have all the answers, sometimes I wonder if anyone knows. Now along comes genomic testing, the test where a little blood, hair, or DNA can tell us ancestry, color, horned or polled, genetic defects, and now they claim they can separate the good and bad for carcass quality, feed efficiency, disposition, and so much more. Is this sound science that will make you more profitable or just a sales pitch to make the genomic companies wealthy? Back in 1974 I was a senior in high school, I was active in 4-H and FFA, and I knew that cows and Ag was what I wanted to do. I didn’t have any idea or clue that 35 years later the world would be revolving at the fast pace that it is today. Heck, we didn’t even have computers or cell phones. Do I enjoy my choice of life? Yes I do. Am I over whelmed at what it cost to do business? At times. Will I use the technology available to build a better product? I will. But, how do we and our customers analyze all the data that is available today? How do we leave enough money in the bank to pay our bills? All good questions, all hard to answer. What I do know is we still need to produce a product that will support our families and the people in Ag. This product has to be easy to handle, easy to calve, produce a profit and be accepted by the rancher, the order buyer, the feeder, packer and the consumer. Now that’s not such a big order is it?

QUICK GUIDE TO ASA EPDs AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

28

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes.

Farm & Ranch Guide lost one of its family members last spring when Terry Robinson, long-time livestock sales representative, died suddenly. For the past 30 years this page was set aside for Terry to talk about what he thought were important topics for the livestock industry and to “visit” with his friends and customers. Last years Terry’s column was particularly poignant and eerily ironic as he wrote about what was important to him as an individual. In it he “talked” about the passing of a dear friend and fellow producer and the importance of the legacy we all leave behind. “The events of this past year, and especially this fall, have reminded me to be keenly aware and very appreciative of the life and the gifts we are given,” he began his editorial. “It is easy to look at others and be envious, to look across the fence and feel like others get the better breaks in life. It is easy to be blind to the really important things in life and forget those things that are so precious. And it has been uncomfortably scarred on me how quickly life can change, how quickly it can be gone and how truly unimportant many things are when it happens.” He talked about the example of his friend, how he treated people and how all people should treat each other. He talked about how one is remembered and what it means to him: “We are all going out with exactly what we came in with. What we own, what we have earned, how many we have of this and how many of that is not going to matter. The only thing that will really matter is the memory that others will have of us. Just one ‘he was a good man’ would be priceless” Little did anyone know the events that would transpire just five months later and that hundreds of people would be gathering at his funeral to say just that: “Terry Robinson was a good man.”

I would like to say thanks to all our present, past, and new customers. We don’t take your choice of doing business with us lightly. In today’s fast paced world it is at times hard to make all the contacts we should. Always remember, if you ever have a problem with your purchase, call, we need to know. As always we will have a bite to eat and some refreshment after the sale. Please stay around a while if you can. It is a time that we can get to know each other better. Thanks so much for taking the time and choosing us to be your seedstock supplier. It means a lot. Bill, Darlene, Bob, Virginia, John and Alicia, Harry and Elaine
