Also, stop by and check out the website throughout the year, as it is continually updated with the art and artists you love. On behalf of the County of San Diego, I am pleased to invite you to Mission Federal ArtWalk 2013. Now in its 29th year, the festival celebrates both the visual and performing arts of our region. The walkable neighborhood of Little Italy sets the bar high when it comes to hosting large, free public festivals and events year-round. ArtWalk has become a treasured asset of our cultural landscape. For this annual free gathering, ArtWalk brings together performing arts institutions, educational children’s art programs and a wide array of cultural non-profits.There is truly something for everyone to see, hear, taste and enjoy. EBRAHIM AMIN (OPA)

RICHARD CURTNER

Painter/Oil | aminart.com | tent #115/117

Mixed Media | curtnerart.com | tent #344/346

Yellow Reflection | Oil on Canvas | 72” x 48”

Noted Marvel | Word Collage | 18” x 24”

Since first experiencing the joy of painting at age 13, when Ebrahim Amin began exploring the galleries and exhibitions in Tehran, until now, Amin has spent over 40 years crafting his artistic excellence. Each of his realistic still lifes, impressionistic landscapes, and dream-like modern paintings tells a vivid story. Amin finds inspiration in nature and has learned his craft from artists throughout the world.

NORM DANIELS

Native Californian Richard Curtner’s artwork writes epic poetry within the visual. His word collages are created by combining hundreds of cutouts of written text all pertaining to a particular theme. Every detail in the collage is done by hand, never manipulated with a computer. The end result is a distinctive form of artwork that reveals something different each time you look at it.

SHAY DAVIS

Painter/Oil | normhere.com | tent #319

Painter/Oil | shayvision.com | tent #541

Pardon Me, Do You Have Any Grey Poupon? | Oil on Canvas | 20” x 30”

The Emperor and his Road | Oil on Canvas | 36” x 36”

Born and raised in San Diego, Norm Daniels has dabbled in the arts beginning with early scribblings of ocean waves on the corners of his homework. After a few health challenges afforded him the opportunity to begin pursuing painting full-time, Norm finds his inspiration on tropical surf safaris and in San Diego’s beautiful landscape. As a long-time ArtWalk participant, Norm states that his favorite thing about this large festival is connecting with the public and re-connecting with collectors who attend year after year.

Beginning his art career at the age of 5 with an interest in sports and superheroes, those early inspirations are still found in Shay’s work today. Likewise, a sense of playfulness from Shay’s life as a football star, surfer and free spirit is linked with his own internal challenges in the real world. Through his art, Shay provides powerful emotional responses to a world of real and fantasy stimuli.

HANNIE GOLDGEWICHT

Atardecer Urbano | Stone, Glass and Aluminum | 36” x 18” x 3”

Woman in Green | Ceramic/Basketry | 20” x 9” x 9”

Using a variety of unique stone from various parts of the world, sculptor Gabriela Firehammer’s art stone inlay technique combines the disciplines of relief and sculpture in her masterpieces. Following a process which consists of hand-cutting, shaping, polishing and setting numerous pieces of stone into a distinct design and shape, Gabriela’s completed works are a collaboration of thoughts, ideas and craftsmanship with her husband Jeremy.

JAMES HILL

Sculptor | jameshill.com

| tent #538

Anima | Stainless Steel | 81” x 32” x 18”

Ceramic | hanniegold.com | tent #327

Since childhood Hannie has been experimenting with every type of creative medium she can find. At age three she sat at the potter’s wheel for the first time. After graduating from the Universidad de Costa Rica and traveling around the world, it was on a trip to Argentina where Hannie first encountered pine needle basketry, which she now combines with handthrown pottery. Her passion for color, design and nature come together with her simple clean forms that have the rustic feel of the earth, formed from clay and pine needles.

MARK JESINOSKI

Painter/Mixed Media | jesart.com

| tent #158

Currents | Acrylic and Oil Pastel on Panel | 40” x 72”

For over 20 years, Los Angeles sculptor James Hill has masterfully fashioned and fused metal, steel and bronze in service to his artistic vision, transforming the coolness of these materials into “living” dynamic forms. His sculptures have been described as “a celebration of optimism that unites the elegance of the organic form with the structure of the modern world.”

Growing up in rural Minnesota, Mark Jesinoski’s hard-working roots and insatiable curiosity have taken him from working in the coal mines of Wyoming to obtaining a PhD in Psychology. Now actively involved in the San Diego arts community, Mark’s present style moves beyond linear forms, focusing on organic shapes and aquatic themes to explore the process of change. Over the years Mark has used his art as a means to connect, educate and share ideas.

Enjoying the Vintage | Mixed Media on Canvas | 36” x 36”

Born and raised in Atlanta, Nicola embraced art as a lifestyle when she moved to Los Angeles and surrounded herself with artists, working with them in various capacities before trying her hand at the creative process herself. Nicola finds beauty where others may see grime. She incorporates photographs, stencils and acrylics, as well as the occasional found object. All of her work is then applied onto wood panels and finished off with several coats of clear resin.

NIKI J SANDS

Known as “The Painter of Chefs,” Christopher M’s expressive paintings go beyond literal depiction to honor the most prolific chefs of our time. Possessing a style grounded in traditional realism with a contemporary twist, Christopher’s technique has garnered much attention and earned him the coveted spot of celebrity artist & poster artist for several food and wine festivals throughout the country.

DAVID WIEMERS

Painter/Oil | davidsprettygoodart.com | tent #321

Musica Musica | Oil on canvas | 22” x 28”

Hurricane Dame Edna | Oil on Canvas | 18” x 24”

Pablo Picasso once said “There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others, with the help of their art and their intelligence, who transform a yellow spot into the sun.” Niki J Sands is a self-taught painter who uses her imagination, intelligence and introspection to transform her “spots” of thought and time into intriguing expressions. Through diligent self-study and experimentation and an innate ability to combine form and color, Niki’s work embodies the soul of her subject.

While working as a Hollywood television writer and producer for the Walt Disney Company and Universal Studios for 25 years, the studios were always asking David Wiemers to transform properties they owned into television series. Sometimes it was a movie, such as Baghdad Café and Teen Wolf; sometimes it was a book, such as Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Through Hollywood, David had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest artists in America today. As an artist, his vision is simple: “I am a storyteller and humor is at the heart of every piece of work I create. It’s the gift I have to offer.”

 BREAKING THE ICE 

BREAKING THE ICE WITH ARTISTS Ask questions and learn the backstory of an artist whose work you love. It definitely enhances the experience of shopping for art and ArtWalk participants enjoy interacting with art lovers. Here are a few questions to help you start the conversation: • • • • • • • • • •

Is your work inspired by life, photographs or from the imagination? What is the meaning behind your artwork? What is the most important influence behind your art/technique? How did you develop your style? What type of music do you listen to while creating? What do you do to combat artistic block? How do you know when a piece is finished? Once you have a concept in mind, how do you begin executing? What is your ultimate goal when creating a piece? What is the most challenging part about working with this medium?
