where he derided the lawsuit as baseless. Furthermore, Bettman asserted that player safety issues and compensation for injuries should be hammered out through collective bargaining rather than litigation in court. The court didn’t buy the argument, refusing then to dismiss the case. The voluminous pages in the complaint share disturbing and heartbreaking testimony from player after player, describing symptoms which all have a common thread. Almost all the players report those symptoms as having their origins from the ﬁrst concussion they suffered, and the subsequent hits which just exacerbated their condition. At last week’s NHL All Star Game, Bettman said little about the ongoing lawsuit, which may reach its crescendo in spring of 2017, also criticizing the release of some of over two million pages of documents which the league has deemed “protected.” Said Bettman, “The selective released leaking of documents out of context may cause some people to scratch their heads, a couple of other people maybe to for a brief moment be a little embarrassed about salty language or the like. But I’m very comfortable with our record. I think in terms of us doing our business on an ongoing basis and the fact that we have the league to run, I’d prefer these things not be public. They’ll be a distraction at best, but I don’t think they impact the rest of the case.’’ The lawsuit seeks unspeciﬁed damages, which may reach into the $1-billion range. More importantly, the suit demands lifetime medical monitoring for the approximately 4800 current and former NHL players. Meanwhile, former players’ lives go on, never fully realizing if that sudden loss of memory, or that immediate mood swing, is just a “senior moment,” or something far more dark.

Collins expounded a bit on exactly what you can expect when you order up some Sour Is Love. “It’s nice and tart and has a great acidity to it. The kettle sour character and the lactobacillus give you a really nice tartness on the side of your tongue. You can expect a sour tart cherry flavor, bright carbonation and a nice body and mouthfeel. It also has a lot of puckering tartness to it. Really, in all honesty, it’s what you would expect a cherry cider Berlinner Weisse would taste like.” As far as the heft of the beer, Collins says, “it should be around 6 percent because the cider is pretty much completely fermentable. My beer was close to 4.5 percent and when you add the cider in, it brings up the ABV.” Plans also call for a barrel-aged version. Three kegs of Sour Is Love were set aside and will be placed into a Buffalo Trace Sour Mash Barrel, obtained by Kevin, for future enjoyment. As far as future collaborations between the Collins’ boys from Resurgence and Cider Creek, Collins said that one is already in the works. “For what we are calling All the King’s Horses, we took some of our The Don Imperial Saison, aged it in Elijah Craig barrels and added some of Cider Creek’s cider and re-fermented it with Brett, so it is going to be super weird.” That creation currently lives at Cider Creek, but Collins said that it will be bottled and available at Resurgence in the future. You can drink your fill of Sour Is Love when it is released on Friday, February 12 at Resurgence. The taps will begin flowing at 4pm. And for those of you looking for a great idea for a road trip, Sour Is Love will also be tapped the following day, Saturday, February 13, at Cider Creek in Canisteo, New York. ollowing up on their successful initial attempt at a craft beer/craft cider mashup (All the King’s Men Smoked Cider Saison), Resurgence Brewing and Cider Creek have again joined forces, this time for Sour Is Love, a cherry cider Berlinner Weisse that is the end result of a base kettle sour beer being blended with cherry cider, then fermented together. Sour Is Love also features three different yeast strains (Brettanoymyces, Saison, & Bavarian Wheat Yeast) as well as Plain Wegmans Organic Greek Yogurt, which was added for its natural bacterial content. The outcome of all these different elements pours a vibrant, almost neon, pink. It opens with a big tart cherry nose before a subtle puckering takes hold on your palette. There’s a non-acidic bite at ﬁrst, with a soft mouthfeel courtesy of the employment of the yogurt used during the brewing process. Dry fruit, apples, peaches, cherries and some barnyard funkiness are also at play. Cherry-rich sweetness balances out the sour aspects for the most part. It’s bright, easy drinking and overtly approachable, which should please both cider and sour fans. Cider fans, don’t be afraid to try a glass of this, and sour beer fans, vice versa, don’t be turned off by the inclusion of cider in this brew. Also, be on the lookout for a barrel-aged version to be released in the coming months.

yler is 22. He grew up somewhere between Buffalo and Rochester (UFR is also keeping his precise location undisclosed, for the reasons cited above). A three-sport athlete in high school, he’s been a Bills fan as long as he can remember. What he can’t recall, though, is much of anything his team has done right during that span. He was an infant when Buffalo reached its fourth straight Super Bowl. He has no memory of The Music City Miracle, the Bills’ last appearance in the National Football League’s post-season, which ended with Tennessee’s Kevin Dyson catching the most infamous lateral in the game’s history and delivering it to the Buffalo end zone 75 yards away. Since that day more than 16 years ago? To be fair, there isn’t a hell of a lot to remember. Asked for the high point of his fandom, the game he remembers most, Tyler has to think about it. And think about it. Finally, he comes up with one. “That time they blew out New England in the season opener,” he says. “What was that, 2008?” His team’s recent history has been so bleak, even the relatively vivid memories are vague. The only time anything like that has happened this millenium was in 2003, when the Bills, fortiﬁed by the

A great day, to be sure. Drew Bledsoe led the Bills to touchdowns on their first two drives against his old team, while Malloy helped the defense batter Tom Brady into one of the worst games of his career. The then-26-year-old completed just 14 of his 28 passes for 123 yards, while the Bills picked off four of them. With 350pound defensive tackle Sam Adams thundered 37 yards with one of them for a touchdown that put Buffalo ahead 21-0 in the third quarter, seemingly shattering the Patriots’ hex on the Bills, then just three seasons old, in the process. Satisfying as it may have been, though, it was only the first game of a long season. The next one went pretty well, too, as Buffalo drilled Jacksonville—then a perennial AFC contender, believe it or not—38-14 to inspire Super Bowl talk both locally and nationally. Highly premature Super Bowl talk, as it turned out. Bledsoe and the Bills went 3-11 from there, getting obliterated by New England in the finale by a highly appropriate score—31-0. That Tyler’s best memory of his team stems from an ultimately meaningless game pretty well sums up his generation’s experience with the Bills. But at least it was directly football-related. Jackie, age 24, has to go back even further for her high point as a Bills fan, to Dec. 1, 2002, when the Bills beat the Dolphins 38-21 on their way to an 8-8 finish (which, it should be noted, is the second-best record the franchise has posted during its playoff exile). Not because Bledsoe threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns, or because Travis Henry ran for 151 yards long before embarking on a less-successful career as a drug trafficker and deadbeat dad, or even because Buffalo won despite a careerbest 227-yard rushing day by Miami’s Ricky Williams. The game is indelible for Jackie (and she’s not alone—it’s the only 21st-century contest on the list of most-memorable Bills-Dolphins game compiled by buffalobills.com) because of

the steady, heavy snowfall that led it to be dubbed “The Snow Globe Game.” “I just remember the whole crowd singing, ‘Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow,” she says. Her friend Nevada, 23, cites a more recent Buffalo-Miami clash, the Bills’ 1914 win on Nov. 15, 2012. Not that it had much significance for either franchise, but because it was the first Thursday night home game played at Ralph Wilson Stadium (for the record, the Bills were technically the home team against the Jets in a 2009 Thursday-nighter at Rogers Centre, but UFR refuses to officially acknowledge that the whole Toronto debacle ever occurred). Fans over 30 remember the Bills going to the Super Bowl four straight years and reaching the playoffs six times in a row, eight out of nine and 10 out of 12 from 1988-99, as well as the big regular-season wins that got them there. The older the demographic you fall in, you might also recall Jim Kelly getting motorcaded to training camp in Fredonia. Or Joe Cribbs jumping to the USFL, then returning. Or the 1980-81 playoff teams who inspired an incredibly cheesy theme song. Or the years when O.J. Simpson was known solely as the best football player on the planet. Tyler’s generation, meanwhile, remembers weather and the calendar. And, of course, the sprawling pre-game tailgate party that has kept the stadium in Orchard Park sold out through most of this bleak era, despite widespread harrumphing from some older scolds among the fan base. “Any home game at the Ralph is awesome,” says 21-year-old Austin. Even slightly older peers have some memory of Bills games that mattered, even if they’re not the most pleasant. Josh, now 28, was 12 years old and grounded, due to some infraction lost to the ages, and therefore forced to watch Buffalo’s Jan. 8, 2000 visit to Nashville on a 4x4-inch black-and-white television in his bedroom. When Steve Christie’s 41yard field goal pushed the Bills ahead of the Titans with 16 seconds remaining, he made a break for it. “I came running out of my bedroom, yelling, ‘Oh my God, they won!’ I got yelled at by my dad, ‘Get back in there – you’re going to jinx them!’ Before I could, the Music City Miracle happens. He’s blamed me for it ever since.”

Can “Clean for Gene” Become “Learn from Bern”?

DEMOCRACY BLUES In January, Robert Battle took the oath of office for his second term as a city councilman in East Chicago, Indiana—administered at the county lockup, where he is being held without bail, charged with a cold-blooded murder during a drug deal. The crime made news in October (i.e., before election day), yet Battle still won his race. According to law, he cannot be forced out of office unless he is convicted or admits the crimes, and he had the right to vote for himself in the election (except that he failed to request an absentee ballot).

> BY PETER SMITH nce upon a time I introduced Senator Gene McCarthy to an audience of students at Dartmouth during the 1968 primary season. The largest auditorium at the College was packed to overﬂowing—the stage was full of people as well as all the seats and aisles. When “Gene” came on stage the audience exploded.

Fifty years later another insurgent is challenging the establishment of the Democratic Party. In 1968 McCarthy did not win in New Hampshire, but President Johnson decided not to seek another term. In 2016, the question is whether a former ﬁrst lady will, amazingly, end up without the Dems’ nomination just as LBJ did? One of the most important unknowables right now is whether young and enthusiastic supporters of the “insurgent” can face a few facts and become a more cohesive political force. “Clean for Gene” was all about asking young men and women in 1968 to shed their counterculture characteristics and go canvassing in clothes that would not wrong-foot them when they called on regular folks. They did so. The equivalent today is surely to persuade young supporters of Bernie Sanders to get serious. I have been watching politics for a long time, and I cannot recall ever seeing the number 86 beside a percentage point except in totalitarian countries; but 86 is the percentage of under25 voters Sanders won in the Iowa caucuses on February 1st. IMHO that is stunning. What “getting serious” means is doing something more than “liking” this or that on Facebook, or following a trend on Twitter. A few days ago there was a very important and totally relevant Op-Ed in the New York Times. In it, Tom Friedman gave a young Egyptian the opportunity to share with

a wide audience his experience with using social media as a political tool. The nub of the matter is that while social media launched the “Arab Spring” and played decisive roles in the overthrow of Mubarek in Egypt and other authoritarian rulers elsewhere in the Middle East, the role of FB and the others in creating a new regime—anywhere—was very limited indeed, if not totally absent. Young Americans, engaged in politics for the first in their lives in 2016 must learn a lesson from that history if they are to help the revolution Sanders proposes to lead. The fact that—I am told—Sanders supporters are posting horrendous words about Hillary Clinton has to mean that his young backers have to “Learn from Bern!” The first thing is to learn patience. The first thing is to learn consistency. The first thing is to learn civility. The first thing to learn is channeling passion. The first thing to learn is persistence. A great many “First Things to Learn;” all of them are options. Different people will find some lessons easy, and they can act on their new knowledge immediately. But all of them will need to learn all of them if Bernie’s work is to prosper and succeed. If he wins the Democratic nomination he will win the presidency. And a large percentage of the one-percent will have to figure out how to respond. I am sure I am one of millions who are looking forward to finding out what they make of it all. CANONICAL MARIJUANA ■ (1) The Albany, New York, company Vireo Health told reporters it would soon offer the world’s first certified Kosher marijuana, announcing that the Orthodox Union of New York had authenticated it as having met Jewish dietary laws (e.g., grown with insect-free plants). (Other Kosher-validating officials complained that the approval should apply only to marijuana that is eaten, not smoked.) (2) Two habit-wearing nuns were scheduled to ask the Merced (California) City Council in January to decline its prerogative under state law to ban dispensing or cultivating medical marijuana. The nuns’ order makes and sells salves and tonics for pain management, using a strain of cannabis containing only a trace of psychoactive material.

BRIGHT IDEAS ■ Since the (naturally insulated) uterus can be a lonely space, Institut Marques of Barcelona, Spain, recently demonstrated a tampon-like “speaker” to carry soothing, specially selected, 54-decibel (“hushed tone”) rhythms that supposedly improve fetal growth. In the Babypod’s first “concert,” the singer Soraya performs Christmas carols. (However, documented evidence for such a device was limited to success of in-vitro fertilization when music was wafted through during the first 48 hours of sperm-egg union.)

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS ■ The Latest in Corruption News: (1) Italy’s highest court freed a man in January because the bribe he offered a cop to avoid a DUI ticket was “too small” to be serious—100 euros (about $108). (2) Lawyers for John Bills (former Chicago city commissioner on trial for taking bribes on a traffic-camera contract) said Bills was obviously innocent because everyone knows that, in Chicago, only bribing the mayor (or at least an alderman) will get anything done. (3) A security guard in Nairobi, Kenya, despairingly told a New York Times reporter in November (detailing corruption so rampant that, for example, ballpoint pens were being sold to the government for $85 each) that “If (people)’re going to steal, please, just steal a little.”

THE CONTINUING CRISIS ■ A former lecturer for Spanish classes at the liberal arts Amherst College near Northampton, Massachusetts, sued the school in December after it failed to renew her contract—leading the lecturer to charge that the Spanish department had tried to solicit student course enrollment by prostitution. Lecturer Dimaris Barrios-Beltran accused her supervisor, Victoria Maillo, of hiring only attractive “teaching assistants” and encouraging them to “date” Amherst students with the ulterior motive of signing them up for Spanish classes—to boost the department’s profile. (College officials said they could not corroborate the accusation, but a lawyer for Barrios-Beltran said Maillo is no longer employed at Amherst.) ■ William Bendorf, 38, filed a lawsuit in December against the Funny Bone comedy club in Omaha, Nebraska, and comedian-hypnotist Doug Thompson after plunging off the stage and breaking his leg following Thompson’s having hypnotized him during his act. Thompson claimed that he had “snapped” Bendorf out of the trance, but the lawsuit claims that Bendorf, instead of exiting via the stairs as Thompson instructed, wandered directly toward his stage-side table because he was still “under” Thompson’s spell. ■ A patient who had been blind for a decade (a condition thought to have been brought on by brain damage from an auto accident) suddenly “regained” her sight, according to a research report in the latest PsyCh Journal—but only in one of the 10 identities (a teenage boy) populating her dissociative identity disorder. STRAIGHT DOPE The Conspiracy Behind Cannabis Prohibition

“Shocking” anti-cannabis movie posters of the 1930s are now recognized as mere kitsch. > BY MARC GROMIS hy is the United States the only industrial country in the world that prohibits its farmers from growing hemp? And, why, in a nation that permits adults to use tobacco, alcohol and deadly pain medications like OxyContin and Xanax, is it unlawful to use marijuana for medicinal and other purposes?

To answers these questions one must examine the history of cannabis prohibition from the 1930s till today.

The origins of reefer madness In 1930, Harry Anslinger was appointed the ﬁrst commissioner of the newly created Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN). The Narcotics Bureau, like the Bureau of Prohibition, was under the U.S. Treasury Department. Anslinger had been appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, banker/businessman Andrew W. Mellon of Pennsylvania, the wealthiest man in America and his wife’s uncle. The Federal Bureau of Narcotics was given a budget of $100,000 (about $1.5 million today). Anslinger did not consider marijuana to be a serious threat to American society. He changed his mind in 1934, the fourth year of his tenure (Prohibition ended in 1933), at which point he spearheaded an anti-marijuana campaign aimed at scaring the public and outlawing cannabis in all forms. Receiving heavy support from the famous newspaper magnate William 8

Randolph Hearst, Anslinger propelled the antimarijuana sentiment to a national movement. Many historians have concluded that Anslinger and the campaign against marijuana had a hidden agenda: The E. I. DuPont De Nemours company had strong business interests in suppressing hemp, the common name used for cannabis. “Uncle Andrew” W. Mellon had invested heavily in the Du Pont family’s new synthetic ﬁber, nylon, a ﬁber that was competing with hemp. Dupont had been making major breakthroughs at the time in synthetics like nylons, polymers and plastics, but almost all of their synthetic products could be competitively matched in quality and produced cheaper using industrial hemp. Hemp was also threatening to become a cheap substitute for wood pulp made paper used in the newspaper industry; that was a threat to the enormous timber holdings of William Randolph Hearst. The conclusion is that Dupont working together with William Randolph Hearst, conspired to create the highly sensational anti-marijuana campaign to eliminate hemp as an industrial competitor. As owner of the largest coast-to-coast newspaper chain in America and the creator of sensationalist news, dubbed “Yellow Journalism,” William Randolph Hearst was a master at manipulating public opinion. He is largely credited with pushing the country into the Spanish-American War of 1898 by publishing fabricated stories of gruesome

murders, rapes and slaughter committed by the Spanish against the people of Cuba—it was a turning point in the history and the power of propaganda. Between 1934 and 1937, Anslinger, in conjunction with the Hearst/DuPont empires, had convinced several states to outlaw marijuana possession. As time went on, more states that had been swamped with antimarijuana propaganda, outlawed the harmless herb. But to truly preserve the DuPont interest in keeping hemp and its derivatives from becoming a commercially viable product, Anslinger needed federal legislation. He pursued such legislation and was successful. Hearst also knew that telling lurid lies about Mexicans and the devil weed marijuana

causing violence, rapes and murders had an added bonus, it sold newspapers. Some samples from Hearst’s San Francisco Examiner: “Marihuana makes ﬁends of boys in thirty days—Hashish goads users to bloodlust.” “By the tons it is coming into this country—the deadly, dreadful poison that racks and tears not only the body, but the very heart and soul of every human being who once becomes a slave to it in any of its cruel and devastating forms…Marihuana is a short cut to the insane asylum. Smoke marihuana cigarettes for a month and what was once your brain will be nothing but a storehouse of horrid specters. Hasheesh makes a murderer who kills for the

love of killing out of the mildest mannered man who ever laughed at the idea that any habit could ever get him…” As a result of this smear campaign, and in particular Anslinger’s lies before a naive Congress, the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, was passed, the effect of which was to ban the sale of all forms of cannabis. The Act was drafted by Anslinger and introduced by Rep. Robert L. Doughton of North Carolina, on April 14, 1937. The seventy-fifth Congress held hearings in April 1937. Anslinger testified before the Ways and Means Committee. Included in his testimony were these statements: “Some people will fly into a delirious rage, and they are temporarily irresponsible and may commit violent crimes. Other people will

The evidence showed that he had smoked marihuana.” “In Chicago recently two boys murdered a policeman while under the influence of marihuana. Not long ago we found a 15-year-

international prohibition. Additional misinformation was presented in lurid anti-marijuana movies with titles like Marijuana: the Weed With Roots in Hell, released 1936; Marijuana Assassin of Youth, released 1937; The Burning Question, released 1936. The most well known film Reefer Madness, released in 1936, was a typical propaganda exploitation drama film that presented as truth certain melodramatic events that occurred when high school students were lured by pushers to try marijuana—from a hit and run accident, to manslaughter, suicide, attempted rape, hallucinations, and descent into madness due to marijuana addiction. The film can be viewed on YouTube. The end result of the anti-cannabis campaign, the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, not only effectively banned the sale of marijuana but also killed off industrial hemp; the real enemy of Hearst and those with petroleum interests.

ﬁber. The government had a ﬁlm made, called Hemp for Victory, urged farmers to grow 36,000 acres of hemp to support the war effort. After the war ended, prohibition continued as cannabis reverted to its “evil” status.

The Nixon/Reagan/Bush years President Nixon ofﬁcially started the “War on Drugs.” Historical documents show that his hatred of protesters against the Vietnam War, and hippies in general, motivated his actions. Nixon made it clear several times that he wanted studies that supported his views and “tough on crime” policies, no matter what the facts might be. “At a critical juncture when the United States decided how it would handle marijuana, President Nixon’s prejudices did more to dominate policy that the thoughtful and extensive review of his own Blue Ribbon Commission, observed Kevin Zeese, President of Common Sense for Drug Policy. “If we had followed the advice of the experts rather than Nixon’s prejudices we would have less marijuana use, be spending less money on marijuana enforcement and many million less people would have been arrested.”

In its patent (#6,630,507) titled CANNABINOIDS AS ANTIOXIDANTS AND NEUROPROTECTANTS, the government makes many impressive claims about cannabis stating that: “Cannabinoids are potent antioxidants...they easily penetrate tissues giving them the ability to enter the central nervous system and brain. Cannabinoids such as CBD (cannabidiol) are particularly advantageous as they are non-toxic...and exhibit unique antioxidant properties.” This hypocritical position of the government is unknown to most members of the public.

The tide is turning Almost every day, research studies are published showing new medicinal uses for cannabis. Cannabis has been found to improve the lives of Alzheimer’s patients, individuals in chronic pain, and even to help broken bones heal quicker and stronger. The National Cancer Institute has recognized that marijuana may kill cancer cells. Children with severe seizure disorders are obtaining relief from medical marijuana. Recently, New York State has approved medical cannabis for patients suffering from Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and a number of other serious illnesses. Industrial hemp, which also is cannabis sativa like marijuana, is being used as an environmentally friendly product to build homes, parts for cars, and for fuel and fiber. Hemp seeds are considered a superfood, and hemp oil is used in cosmetics and hundreds of other products. There is consensus among observers of the cannabis movement that the days of prohibition are coming to an end. More than 80 percent of Americans support medical cannabis, and more than 50 percent support legalization of marijuana. A number of universities now have projects wherein hemp is being grown and researched. Studies regarding the medicinal use of cannabis are now going forward in states where cannabis has been legalized and at universities and research centers in the United States and around the world. In the words of Victor Hugo, “No army can withstand the power of an idea whose time has come.” George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who were hemp farmers, may finally stop spinning in their graves. Because hemp produces more biomass than any plant species (including corn) and can be grown in a wide range of climates and locations, hemp could be a major source of ethanol fuel. Literally millions of wild hemp plants currently grow throughout the U.S. Wild hemp, like hemp grown for industrial use, has no drug properties because of its low THC content. U.S. marijuana laws prevent farmers from growing the same hemp plant that proliferates in nature by the millions.

From 1776 to 1937, hemp was a major American crop and textiles made from hemp were common. Yet, The American Textile Museum, The Smithsonian Institute, and most American history books contain no mention of hemp. The government’s War on Drugs has created an atmosphere of self-censorship where speaking of hemp in a positive manner is taboo.

Hemp Uses: Facts ■ One acre of hemp will produce as much ﬁber as two to three acres of cotton. Hemp ﬁber is stronger and softer than cotton, lasts twice as long as cotton, and will not mildew.

One acre of hemp will produce as much paper as two to four acres of trees. From tissue paper to cardboard, all paper products can be produced from hemp. Hemp paper will last hundreds of years without degrading, can be recycled many more times than tree-based paper, and requires less toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process than does paper made from trees. ■

Hemp can be used to produce strong, durable and environmentally-friendly plastic substitutes. Thousands of products made from petroleum-based plastics can be produced from hemp-based composites.

■ It takes years for trees to grow until they can be harvested for paper or wood, but hemp is ready for harvesting only 120 days after it is planted. Harvesting hemp rather than trees would eliminate erosion due to logging, thereby reducing topsoil loss and water pollution caused by soil runoff.

Hemp seeds contain a protein more nutritious and more economical to produce than soybean protein. Hemp seed protein can be used to produce virtually any product made from soybean: tofu, veggie burgers, butter, cheese, salad oils, ice cream, milk, etc.

■ Hemp seed oil can be used to produce nontoxic diesel fuel, paint, varnish, detergent, ink and lubricating oil. Because hemp seeds account for up to half the weight of a mature hemp plant, hemp seed is a viable source for these products. ■

eith Raniere, 55, the founder of NXIVM, keeps a harem that averages about 20 women – a few of whom come and go, He has sexual relations with many others, too –as he evaluates them for inclusion in his harem. Since 2003, Clare and Sara Bronfman, heirs of the Seagram’s liquor fortune, have subsidized Raniere, his harem and NXIVM, his life coaching seminar company that critics have called a cult. Bronfman money pays for homes, offices, clubs, and condos in Albany, resorts in the Caribbean, Fiji, West Palm Beach, and Los Angeles. And it pays for dozens of workers, some of whom are illegal aliens, to serve Raniere and his business schemes and provide comfort for him and his harem. Clare Bronfman in fact is one of the harem. A NXIVM source told me Raniere “has servants and sex slaves who wait on him hand 12

and foot 24/7 and 100’s of people who keep their whole lives on hold waiting to arrange their schedules and aspirations to support his every whim…. “Keith is the most comfort driven, indulger that ever lived. And any man who is so completely lost in satisfying his moment to moment desires, regardless of the consequences to his followers, and their millions which he has burned through, must have destroyed all his conscience by now. Unless of course, he never had one to begin with.” The Bronfman’s reward for subsidizing Raniere was him losing [or swindling] more than $100 million of their money through failed commodities trading and a scam real estate deal. The Bronfmans also spent an estimated $10 million on lawyers pursuing lawsuits against people Raniere designated as enemies. Former harem members say that much of the Bronfman millions that changes hands is unreported or misreported and that sever-

Raniere lives in Albany in a modest home with two harem members. The rest of the harem live in homes nearby where the door is always open to him. They help run his company. While Raniere is the mastermind, most of the work is done by his harem. To be in his harem means to work for NXIVM.

As I see it, NXIVM has three goals: 1. get [untaxed] money from Mexican and American students. 2. systemically strip the Bronfmans of the rest of their fortune. 3. Find new students to serve Raniere through intense 18 hour per day seminars which critics have compared to classic brainwashing sessions. There is a ranking system for students – using colored sashes to denote rank. To anyone who knows Raniere’s lust for money it was no surprise the Bronfman sisters rose high in the ranks quickly Sara Bronfman attained a green sash in record time [after about $50 million]. Clare rose to orange then became vice president in charge of NXIVM operations [after about $100 million]. According to a 2003 Forbes Magazine story, “Sara Bronfman says, admiring the silky cloth around her chest, “…coming from a family where I’ve never had to earn anything before in my life, [it] was a very, very moving experience for me to be awarded this yellow sash. It was the first thing that I had earned on just my merits.” Both sisters say they believe Raniere, who calls himself Vanguard, is a world savior and an enlightened being. The Bronfmans also help fund an annual week long birthday celebration for Raniere called Vanguard week where the harem along with hundreds of students come to worship Raniere and take seminars at a

In the 15 years the Bronfman sisters have followed Raniere they have blown through a sizeable portion of their inheritance. Clare Bronfman once showed me paperwork designed to fool the Bronfman trustees where the sisters listed the $65 million for commodities trading gifted to Raniere [without paying gift taxes] as a loan. They claimed they were getting interest on the money because they wanted their father Edgar Bronfman to believe the money was earning a profit. Instead of a profit the $65 million evaporated. According to court documents, their own testimony, and numerous witnesses, including former financial advisor, ex-harem member and whistleblower, Barbara Bouchey, the Bronfmans have gifted/invested/lost $200 million to Raniere on various plans and schemes and living expenses. It is unknown how much he secreted for himself. So why do the Bronfmans – especially Clare stay with Raniere? As ex-harem member Kristin Keefe said, “Keith completely emotionally, sexually, and financially enslaved Clare by convincing her early on in her relationship with him, that all the bad press that befell him was a result of her actions in not upholding him properly and thus turning her father against him. That all these horrible things are because of her ‘ethical breach’ and only her nobility, relentless work on his behalf, and her resources can heal this breach and save her soul and humanity…. Clare [is] like the secretary for Bernie Maddoff who was recently sentenced to prison. … [Clare] has suspended all personal discrimination and

judgement and defers to Keith on all things without question. No matter how completely obvious her criminal and civil liability is, and irregardless of her past professional experience.” All of the ex-harem members I interviewed are afraid of Raniere as he is known to spend any amount of Bronfman money to punish a woman who has left him. Almost all of them have asked to remain anonymous. As one former NXIVM student wrote, “He is tireless for destruction when he doesn’t get his way. He is coo-coo and will hunt you down with the funds of one of his Seagram’s fortune concubines.” Ex-harem members told me that once they have sex with him – and he ejaculates inside them - they must forever forego sex with any other man. Sometimes women wait months or years between encounters. During that time, they must maintain celibacy. They are told that once they take his semen, they are “energetically connected” to him and this gift will have a tremendous spiritual impact unless they have sex with another man. Infidelity on their part, they are told, would break their spiritual connection and might kill him because of his super sensitivity. Raniere requires most of the women to take birth control pills. An ex harem member told me “if you accept his semen, then you are connected and he wants to ‘cum’ in every women. It’s a way to dominate and have power over her.” All the women are required to keep their hair as Raniere commands. One harem member, Ivy Nevares, was told she must never cut her hair until she cured some

Another ex-harem member told me, ‘what happened to Daniela Fernandez and Ivy Nevares is an atrocity. Everyone that has circled through Albany in recent years knows about Ivy and her long hair, and her shunning by Keith etc. Many knew about Daniela’s shunning and imprisonment too. These were acts of abuse explicitly executed by Keith’s harem. Methodically, and deliberately over many years. It is wrong.” When harem member Barbara Jeske cut her hair without his permission, she was ostracized by Raniere and shunned by the women of his inner circle. “You should want your hair the way I want it,” Raniere reportedly said to her. A source told me “Jeske wanted to get out and I saw the inner circle women attack her.” The women must also remain thin. A weight gain of 3–5 pounds can result in censure, punishment and banishment since fat disturbs Raniere’s vital energies, he says. “All of the women look grey,’ an ex Raniere harem member told me. “Most of them are on the pill. “You can tell when a student starts sleeping with Raniere. She starts losing weight. She has certain pallor and dullness. She rarely smiles. She looks pensive. “I would never recommend that anyone get involved with him sexually. It is abusive. These women are so desperate for love and affection and he can go years with them without having sex. And

While it is generally hid from the rank and file students, those who stick around soon learn that NXIVM is run by his harem. As one 6-year student of NXIVM observed: “What Keith proposes and the organization espouses is that ‘this is all for a better world and a better ethical humanity’… Who doesn’t want to believe that? [But] when I began to see how many of the women, especially those close to the Kingpin behaved I knew in every ounce of my being that he was screwing them all. The cover up was so obvious. I … asked insiders … it was confirmed. f you’ve seen the film trailers, then you already know that the members of the Suicide Squad comprise the worst heroes ever. They’re bad guys, and what they do best is f@%k things up—for the U.S. government. Kicked in the Teeth compiles the New 52 interpretation of the team, under the control of mega badass Amanda Waller. The Squad is sent to contain a techno-organic nanovirus loose in a stadium by killing every single person there, save for Patient Zero, who holds the secret to the cure. But surely they won’t kill hundreds of innocent civilians, right? Well, with expert marksman Deadshot in charge, you can bet the Squad will get the mission done, and even provide a built-in patsy for the authorities to blame. The book’s second half involves a break-out at Belle Reve prison that the Squad is tasked to quell by any means necessary, and a hunt for the woman responsible, Harley Quinn. If you want a taste of the coming film, this book gives you that. It’s a thrill ride that simply does not stop, driven by Adam Glass, whose writing nails the characters’ personalities, and Federico Dallocchio, whose art is sharp enough to put your eye out. You’ll enjoy getting to know what makes Floyd Lawton tick, seeing inside his head to view why he kills as Deadshot. As for Harley Quinn, you’ll see a retelling of her origin, how she went from psychologist Harleen Quinzel to the lovable and hilarious psychopath we know today. The book delves deep into their motivations, but read fast. By the end of the book, one of them will be bleeding out on the floor. Fair warning.

lan Moore, comics’ most acclaimed writer (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) is best known for re-imagining ﬁctional characters created by others (Swamp Thing, Miracleman, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Batman: The Killing Joke). He has written only one historical graphic novel, From Hell, and it’s a doozy. From Hell is a Jack the Ripper novel. But unlike most others in the genre, it is not a whodunit. The murderer and his ostensible motive are known from the start—“ostensible” because everything in an Alan Moore novel is more than it seems. As his gripping tale unfolds, Moore explores spiritualism, freemasonry, London’s dark psycho-architecture, the ominous churches designed by Nicolas Hawksmoor, vivisection, the nature of time and the practices of Victorian prostitutes. Eminent Victorians appearing in the book include novelist/playwright Oscar Wilde, John Merrick (better known as the Elephant Man), the artist Walter Sickert and Alexandrina Victoria herself, better known as Queen Victoria, who ruled Britain from 1837 to 1901. Moore appends footnotes to every chapter. Most record his research but many are droll commentaries on the act of writing his story. Moore, whose published manuscripts reveal that he demands much of his illustrators, found the perfect collaborator for From Hell in Australian artist Eddie Campbell (Bacchus, Alec, The Black Diamond Detective Agency), whose skritchy black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings perfectly evoke the illustrated broadsheets of 1880s London without sensationalizing the violence of the Ripper’s murders. From Hell is a weighty tome, 477 illustrated pages, 42 pages of footnotes and a 24-page appendix that illustrates the vagaries of Ripper research. For all of that, it’s impossible to put down. Fair warning: From Hell is strictly adult reading.

About his recent work, Another War, Golove says “It is the final song in my setting of poems by Susan Lewis entitled Imaginary Songs II. Imaginary Songs II is scored for soprano, alto flute, and cello. My setting of Another War takes hold of certain poetic images and renders them musically, very much in a word-painting or madrigalist mode, beginning with a nod to the cowboy song to go with the ‘odd horse’ of the poem’s first line. It was composed for the late flutist Cheryl Gobbetti Hoffman and premiered in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2004. Cheryl was an imaginative and generous colleague and friend who gave me my first opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2002. For our followup trip to Weill in 2004, she offered me the chance to premier an original work there. What a thrill!” Williams says that the motoric, repetitive textures heard in Bach’s Partita and Preludes are referenced in her new solo piano work, Cineshape 4. According to the composer “This piece also borrows structural elements from the German film Run Lola Run. This film is divided into three episodes; Lola repeats the same day three times, starting in exactly the same way, but each time hoping that a slight modification of her actions will save the life of her boyfriend. This simple concept—that there are numerous ways to develop a particular idea and that minor choices have serious consequences—leads to a multifaceted structure. The three sections of the piano piece, each lasting approximately four minutes, can be performed in any order, predetermined by the

performer and played without pause. Each episode must be perceived as convincingly reaching its inevitable conclusion, despite the three different results. Much like the film, the piece is a highpaced, energetic tour-de-force, literally running from start to finish with only occasional moments to stop and take a breath.” Soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle joined the faculty of the UB department of music this semester, and based solely on her mesmerizing performances of a setting of a poem by Baudelaire by Elliott Carter, along with a pair of the vocally challenging Récitations by Georges Aperghis at a UB lunchtime concert last week, it’s clear that she has the talent necessary to succeed the much-loved soprano Tony Arnold, who left UB over a year ago for a new position in Boston. DuMouchelle, who has gained an enviable international reputation as an interpreter of contemporary music, will be singing a selection of lieder by Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert. “I’ve always been drawn to the subtleties of vocal expression,” says DuMouchelle. “For me, singing is much more than vocalizing a beautiful line, it’s about communicating emotion and experience. As a lieder, or art song singer, chamber musician, or contemporary music specialist, I am offered an opportunity to explore human nature and auditory perception. Lieder offers singers the opportunity for intimacy and vocal experimentation that orchestral singing, such as opera cannot afford. In orchestral music, a singer’s first priority is always projection, but in lieder, projection is rarely an issue.” “When I was a student at Mannes College, opera and lieder singing were both emphasized. I found lieder to be a wonderful creative outlet for me, where I would create the back story of each character I portrayed. Songs become mini operas, and because they are so short, an interpreter must use a wider variety of vocal colors and textures, and explore the sounds of the words themselves to demonstrate a deeper meaning. I find this style of interpretation incredibly rewarding. Another aspect of lieder is the interactions between voice and piano, the piano becoming an active participant in harmony and rhythm. I find Clara Schumann’s lieder especially rewarding because of this. Clara was a fabulous pianist, and her songs offer an interesting relationship between voice and piano of both intensity and intimacy.” So, what about those Mouse People? “Martin Bresnick’s Songs of the Mouse People, which has near quotes from Bach’s solo cello sonatas,” says Williams, “is based on Franz Kafka’s last short work ‘Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse People.’ In that remarkable valedictory story, Kafka meditates on a mouse diva, and her relationship to her art and her audience. Bresnick has translated sentences from the original that suggest titles in the mouse people’s multi-volume treasury of songs.” Songs of the Mouse People will be performed by Golove and percussionist Steve Solook, who will be making his Buffalo debut. ometimes powerful truths hide beneath our petty differences. That’s the case in Joshua Harmon’s comedy, Bad Jews, now running at the Jewish Repertory Theatre of WNY, in a production directed by Steve Vaughan. Arin Lee Dandes, Adam Rath, Nick Stevens play the grandchildren of a beloved man, who survived the holocaust but has recently died. In contention is who should most rightfully inherit the gold Chai pendant the old man hid in his mouth for two years while imprisoned in a concentration camp, and which he used, after the war, to propose to grandma when he couldn’t afford a ring. This does not sound like the stuff of comedy, but it is. Cousins Liam and Daphna played by Adam Rath and Arin Lee Dandes, behave abominably as each maneuvers to own the meaningful piece of jewelry. Liam’s fairminded brother Jonah, played by Nick Stevens tries to stay out of the fray, but ﬁnds that to be impossible. This trio is marvelous, tweaking every ounce of comedy and angst out of Harmon’s engaging script. Jamie Nablo is similarly able as Liam’s Christian girlfriend from Delaware.

was the first African American movie star to become a millionaire. In later years he would be criticized for having perpetuated the negative stereotype of the lazy and mischievous man of color. He contended, by contrast, that he entered Hollywood through the back door so that others could enter through the front. Gradually, his legacy as a Hollywood pioneer has grown. It was given a major boost in the 1960s, when he became a friend of boxing champion Muhammad Ali. Will Power’s play, Fetch Clay, Make Man, visits the Fetchit-Ali relationship and explores the idea of success, legacy, being an agent for social progress, and being true to oneself. The production at the Paul Robeson Theatre, directed by Laverne Clay, benefits from the formidable talents of “Fisher” as Stepin Fetchit, and Johnny Rowe as Ali. The pair appealingly channels the familiar personalities of two cultural icons. They are assisted by the fine work of Joe Giambra as the head of Fox Studios, Leon Copeland as Ali’s assistant, and the stunning and talented Courtney Turner who plays Ali’s first wife, Sonji Roi. The production continues through Feb. 28.

FETCH CLAY, MAKE MAN

Ordinary Days is a little musical by Adam Gwon about young adults forging out on their own. Speciﬁcally, the show explores that moment of terror when a person realizes that the future might not hold fame, fortune, the Nobel Prize, and the career of Napoleon. In other words, these young people must learn to savor the ordinary. Directed by Victoria Perez for O’Connell & Company, the chief virtue of this production is the abundance of talent embodied by its cast of four young actors: Reed Bentley, Edith Grossman, Adam Hayes, and Jennel Pruneda. The show is fresh and appealing, and with honesty, these young talents are, in their way, quite extra-ordinary.

Before the evening is over, we have examined what it means to be a good person, a good Jew, and a good relation—and have been prompted to consider the value of a speciﬁc heritage. There are times when the family fracas threatens to spin out of control, but Vaughan’s production always ﬁnds its way back on track. > BY TONY FARINA f there’s a ﬁnancial crisis at Erie Community College, as certainly appears the case, there’s no sign of it if you take a look at the salaries at the college headed by President Jack Quinn at $192,500 even though he spends many days away from the institution on outside paying assignments as far away as California.

The recent state audit of ECC told the story of unauthorized pay raises and bonuses handed out by the Quinn regime to senior staff even as the burden of carrying the college was being shifted to students with a steady diet of tuition hikes and another looming in the coming year. But let’s pause in the wake of that scathing state audit and look at some recent numbers, even though they may not fully reflect all the raises and bonuses handed out over the last few years in secret and without board approval. Quinn tops the list, of course, at $192,500, but not far behind is Quinn’s former Washington congressional aide, Michael Pietkiewicz, senior vice president for operations, who earns a whopping $140,000 or $67 per hour, for a position many say he is academically unqualified to hold. But that’s only the top of the list of high paid staffers. Third on the list is Bill Reuter, chief administrative and financial officer, at $135,000. Richard Washousky, the executive vice president for academic affairs, earns $120,360, followed by Kristin Klein Wheaton, the vice president for legal affairs, who was earning

Another big salary is the $117,300 paid to Benjamin Packer, the executive vice president for student affairs, while two other staffers, associate tech vice president Joseph Stewart, and associate vice president for health sciences Patrick Wiles each are paid at the rate of $53 an hour, or put another way, $109,242. There are eight other senior staffers who earn at least $90,000 at ECC which has a payroll that looks like the patronage-fat Erie County Water Authority, only rate payers foot the bill for the bloated Water Authority payroll while much of the burden at ECC is falling on the backs of students as the declining enrollment can’t carry the big salaries although they are still there. We’re still waiting for a formal response on the audit from Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz who had been expected to have something to say last week about his plans for the college in the wake of the blistering review, but so far Poloncarz has not issued anything. The legislature went easy on the ECC regime after Wheaton resigned although the problems at the institution run far deeper than her. We did report last week that some insiders expect the county to absorb the $500,000 legal empire that Wheaton had established at ECC to deal with numerous lawsuits against the college although so far, Poloncarz has been silent. The ECC board is putting together a response to the state audit that is expected by April about the time early numbers for the ECC budget plan for the coming year are due with insiders saying another tuition hike is inevitable. Meanwhile, Quinn goes on his merry way, earning the highest public salary in Western New York even as the college he heads sinks further into crisis. What is it that protects Quinn? Many wonder how he has managed to hold onto his job despite the problems and the lack of transparency and accountability identiﬁed by state auditors. Board Chairman Steve Boyd is expected to depart in June and the question is, on many people’s minds, is will Quinn follow him out the door in the near future.

The Judges and Police Conference was established in 1932 by Erie County Sheriff Charles A. Freidberg and was formed to provide a forum for interaction between the judiciary, law

s we have been reporting for the last several weeks, Tonawanda Town Attorney John Flynn appears to have locked up the Erie County Democratic Party’s endorsement for district attorney, and he is expected to officially get the nod at the Executive Committee’s meeting on Saturday (Feb. 13). Sources say Flynn, a Tonawanda political heavyweight and former town judge is the first choice of the party over Acting DA Mike Flaherty and former assistant district attorney Mark Sacha, a strong critic of former DA Frank Sedita who Flaherty served as first deputy. The job of district attorney is one of the most coveted positions in the county, and while he may not receive the party’s backing, Flaherty has already put together a war chest that is approaching $400,000 and he says he’s in the race to stay no matter the party’s vote on Saturday. Flaherty says he believes the party’s more informed leaders may still have second thoughts about endorsing someone “who is going to lose,” and is holding out hope he may still prevail in the voting although sources say that Flynn has the endorsement locked up.

The acting DA says over the last several weeks he has established himself as an independent and professional prosecutor who has formed the ofﬁce’s ﬁrst public integrity unit and vowed to take a second look at some cases that his predecessor declined to pursue. John Flynn, who has had a long and successful run in the Town of Tonawanda, is seen as a favorite of party regulars and enjoys the strong backing of the town’s Democratic organization headed by John Crangle, nephew of longtime Democratic Chairman Joe Crangle. Flynn said last Saturday at the Conservative chairman’s breakfast in Lackawanna that he is getting his team ready to start raising money and make the case of why he is the best choice for district attorney during what is expected to be a bruising primary battle with Flaherty. Conservative Chairman Ralph Lorigo is expected to sit on the sidelines for now as the Flynn and Flaherty camps go at each other over the next several weeks. There’s no sign of a Republican candidate as yet although the name of attorney Mark Arcara, nephew of U. S. Judge Richard Arcara, himself a former DA, has been heard in some circles. Former State Attorney General Dennis Vacco, who has been tapped by GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy to head a search committee for a Republican candidate, is staying mum.

small, understated drama concerning emotions subdued and uncomfortable truths ignored, the British domestic drama 45 Years is not your average screen romance, and will certainly disappoint viewers expecting one. Expanding on the contrived premise from the David Constantine’s short story “In Another Country,” 45 Years is a quietly devastating portrait of an aging couple whose long marriage is fractured by unexpected revelations from the past. The ﬁlm’s opening scenes introduces us to Geoff (Tom Courtenay) and Kate (Charlotte Rampling), as director Andrew Haigh skillfully establishes their daily routines and lets us inside their comfortable lives just a week before their 45th anniversary. All seems well until Geoff receives a letter informing him the frozen body of the woman he loved and was previously engaged to has been discovered, frozen and perfectly preserved in ice following her death in the Swiss alps over four decades ago, and whom Kate had no knowledge of. The arrival of this near-literal ghost from a previous life awakens old wounds and feelings in the couple, forcing Kate to re-examine their relationship as she learns more about the woman Geoff loved in secret before her, and the invisible traces she left throughout their home. 45 Years is the third feature from the remarkably mature 42-year old writer/director Haigh whose previous ﬁlm, Weekend, was similarly observant in its exploration of young love between gay men in modern Britain. If Weekend recalled David Lean’s Brief Encounter

in its portrayal of a deep but fleeting love that develops in a short timespace, the great romantic drama of Europe’s post-war cinema 45 Years most closely resembles is Robert Rosellini’s Journey to Italy. Both films detail the dissolution of a marriage with a haunting, almost-dreamlike intensity, and ask the difficult question: How much can two lovers can really know about the other’s individual inner world? Veteran thespians Courtenay and Rampling in particular provide masterful performances, able to convey a decadespanning, lived-in relationship full of shared experiences with the most specific of gestures in the film’s early scenes. In this way they reminded me of the married couple Erland Josephson and Liv Ullman so fully realized in Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage. Like Todd Haynes Carol and Christan Petzold’s Phoenix, 45 Years is a focused drama that draws its power from how acutely it observes human behavior and the psychology of its characters. That all three were also so smartly and artfully directed in a manner which recalls the best European films of an era passed also unites them. I have some some reservations with 45 Years, it’s arguably an overly dour experience, and occasionally one might suspect Haigh’s screenplay is opaque to a fault. As much as I admire 45 Years, I don’t feel much desire to revisit the film anytime in the near future. Still, given how thoughtful films of this ilk seem to be increasingly rare in these days, 45 Years stands as a rich and rewarding look at the dark uncertainties that can exist in even the most seemingly enduring of marriages.

After building some chops busking in NYC subway stations, their primitive sound began to take shape. They’ve since gone on to become favorites at various festivals, as well as landing some cool opening slots for major headliners like the Dave Matthews Band, when not bouncing around the country in their short bus performing for an ever widening circle of fans at their own headlining gigs. Their primal Americana sound has been compared to a cross between The Band and Nirvana—although decidedly gooﬁer than either—making for a foot-stomping good time live. (That irreverent artistic and literary avant-garde movement first begun in 1916 at Zurich, Switzerland’s Cabaret Voltaire, defined by its mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes and its opposition of bourgeois cultural norms). (Think of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain, which was a urinal turned upside down). Members of the original Hallwalls artist group, directed by LP Lundy, created and started a yearly celebration of Dada day back in February of 1976 and this Saturday marks the 40th year since that tradition began. Saturday’s event will feature experimental music ensemble BuffFluxus and will include compositions by Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Mac Low, and Michael Colquhoun. Excerpts from reel-to-reel video documentation of Dada Day 1976, recently conserved and digitized as part of the ongoing Migrating Media project of archival restoration (videotapes, audiotapes, and exhibition slides), will be shown. Artist LP Lundy, originator of the first Dada day, will be returning from Chicago for this special event/celebration of all things Dada, including live music, poetry, films and performances.

Always striving to think outside the box and create unique concert experiences, Particle paired their high-energy dance music with cutting-edge multimedia production, thematic special events, and epic marathon sets that quickly developed a loyal fan base of Particle People spanning genre lines. Particles unstoppable blast of gritty, electronic jam band standards employ a loose 70s feel which recalls Pink Floyd’s prog-rock and Return to Forever –styled jazz fusion with insistent disco-esque dance beats. Principal Keyboardist and songwriter Steve Moltz makes smart use of lush textures and synth-pop beats, creating a ambient sound their fans have dubbed “space-porn” which pushed Particle towards becoming a big staple at U.S. festivals as well as a major inﬂuence any today’s top touring jam, funk, and electronic acts. Particle is set to release their ﬁrst studio album in over a decade sometime within 2016, but new and old fans alike shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see them this Sunday when they take to the stage at Buffalo Iron Works.

eorge Frayne, aka Commander Cody, has been hammering out all kinds of American music from his place behind the piano ever since his inﬂuential band Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen landed in San Francisco in 1969. The band, which at times swelled to eight pieces, included guitar madman Bill Kirchen, whose driving licks made their 1972 cover of “Hot Rod Lincoln” a runaway hit in 1972. The Old Commander—as he’s affectionately known to his fans—continues to run full throttle, banging out old time rock ‘n’ roll, redneck country, boogie woogie and swing tunes like on his 2009 studio release Dopers, Drunks, and Everyday Losers, and 2013’s Live from the Island with his band the Modern Day Airmen. “Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues,”—an old original about a pothead grieving over a lost love—is as funny and genuinely touching today as it was when it was released in the 70s. he Danish String Quartet is a superbly talented chamber group, however, something unusual sets them apart from other chamber ensembles. The cellist is Norwegian and joined the group in 2008, but the three Danes met as children in a summer camp for music enthusiasts and became fast friends. They hung out with each other all the time, playing football as well as chamber music together. When camp ended they continued their friendship through the school year and met often to play music for fun. It’s no surprise they all ended up at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen together. It is their personal bond that lends the group an organic connection to the music they play with each other. Like a family of harmony singers, everything ﬁts perfectly. Since forming they have toured the world, made several recordings and are the hit ensemble of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Their performance at the Mary Seaton Room, their ﬁrst in Buffalo, will include works by Beethoven, Medelssohn and Janácek.
