Whether you're a beginner, an expert or somewhere in between, you're bound to learn something new. Explore your creativity and curiosity and join us for a fun summer class!


Art.Science.Gallery. is an art gallery and science communication space featuring science related art in Austin, Texas. We are a local, woman-owned small business that collaborates with artists, scientists, and other galleries and museums to produce art exhibitions of science-related art. Our goal is to create and cultivate a community space where artists and scientists can forge new and collaborative relationships and where everyone can rediscover science through new lenses. Our mission is to provide a friendly environment to make science more accessible to everyone through science-related visual arts exhibitions, and programs to foster the careers of emerging and established artist-scientists and to provide professional development opportunities for scientists to become more engaging public communicators.

ART 101 | Introduction to Block Printing Workshop Instructor: J. Dore Saturdays July 23 & 30, 2016 • 9:00am-12:00pm $95 per student (2 meetings, 6 hours) In this two-part workshop you will learn the basics of block-printing from the botany and chemistry of the linoleum used to make the blocks, to designing, carving, and printing a block print! Design and carving will take place week 1 and printing week 2. All supplies included to get you started in block printing; you’ll receive a complete block printing tool kit to take home with you! ART 102 | Introduction to Solar Printmaking Workshop Instructor: M. Gillespie Sunday July 31, 2016 • 12:00-3:00pm $60 per student (1 meeting, 3 hours) Harness the power of the sun’s rays to create original prints on paper in this afternoon printmaking workshop. You will learn the basics of solar printmaking using a variety of colorful photosensitive pigments and will get hands-on experience making your own original prints. All supplies are included.

BIO 101 | The Science of Chocolate Workshop Instructor: R. Burks Saturday June 25, 2016 • 6:00-8:00pm $50 per student (1 meeting, 2 hours) Learn all about the science of chocolate from the biogeography and evolution of the cacao plant to the biochemistry of compounds in chocolate. From the forest to your grocery store shelf, the story of chocolate is fascinating, and delicious! Experience chocolate tastings and receive a handmade greeting card, magnet or pin depicting the molecule theobromine (a compound in chocolate).

BIO 201 | Integrated Anatomy Class Instructor: A. Masino Thursdays June 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28, 2016 • 6:30-9:00 pm $155 per student (5 meetings, 12.5 hours) Form follows function, or does function follow form? In the study of the human body, we find that form (anatomy) and function (physiology) inform each other so intimately that we cannot comprehend one without the other. This course will apply this integrated view to a tour of the body systems that delves beyond surface musculature to investigate the unifying concepts of body structures. Great for artists wanting to deepen their understanding of figure drawing and those wanting to learn more about the body!


CHEMISTRY CHEM 101 | Color Chemistry Workshop Instructor: D. Kneeland, K. Lewis, C. Gaston Sunday July 24, 2016 • 9:00am-12:00pm (for teachers) or 1:00-3:00pm $55 per student (Discounts for high school teachers or ACS members)

Learn chemistry concepts such as how electrons in atoms & molecules create absorption and emission in the visible spectrum, how acid-base indicators work, and how reactions are used to create molecules through hands-on activities. Concepts are illustrated with examples from color chemistry, including the observation of color in light, pH indicators, pigments & dyes.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES ES 101 | Poetics of the Natural World Class Instructor: E. Beyda Wednesdays June 22, 29, July 6, 13, 20, 2016 • 6:30-8:30pm $95 per student (5 meetings, 10 hours) Take a literary approach to exploring the mysteries of the universe and follow in the tradition of Thoreau’s early work, Japanese court poetry, and the writings of Hildegarde Von Bingen. In this course you will explore a specific region of scientific inquiry, both historical and contemporary through the appropriate poetic form. Then, learn how to assemble and hand-bind a chapbook of work. ES 102 | Botanical Field Sketching Class Instructor: J. Dore Sundays June 26, July 10, 17, 24, 31, 2016 • 12:00-3:00pm $175 per student (5 meetings, 15 hours)

This course will teach you how to create location-based drawings and illustrations with emphasis on natural and botanical scenes, and will inspire you to create projects based on class drawings. Drawing trips to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Zilker Botanical Garden, and the Austin Nature & Science Center will begin or end with short lectures and group crit. Recommended to take concurrently with Natural History of Austin which meets back-to-back with this class; 10% off if you take both classes. Students are responsible for admission fees to the parks visited (est. $3-10 per trip). No drawing experience is necessary.

ES 103 | Natural History of Austin Class Instructor: H. Gillespie Sundays June 26, July 10, 17, 24, 31, 2016 • 3:00-5:00pm $95 per student (5 meetings, 10 hours) In this field-based class, you will learn all about the amazing plants and animals of Austin and the ecosystems that they call home. Through adventurous field trips to some of Austin’s most iconic natural places, you will learn to identify native species and how to keep a field journal of your observations. Recommended to take concurrently with Botanical Field Sketching which meets back-to-back with this class; 10% off if you take both classes. Students are responsible for admission fees to the parks visited (estimated $3-10 per field trip). Prerequisites: curiosity about nature, ability to swim, and ability to hike 2 miles in the Texas heat.

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION SCOM 101 | Creating Data & Information Visualizations Workshop Instructors: S. Morris & E. Weerts Thursday June 23, 2016 • 6:30-8:30pm $30 per student (1 meeting, 2 hours) Effective visuals play a critical role in communicating scientific data and complex ideas to a diverse audience. This interactive workshop will help you explore best practices, resources, and tools for creating data and information visualizations that tell compelling stories. Hands-on guidance during the workshop will assist students with current projects. BYO computer highly recommended. SCOM 102 | Designing Effective Scientific Presentations Workshop Instructor: H. Gillespie Tuesday July 19 (posters), July 26, 2016 (powerpoints) • 6:30-9:00 pm $45 per student (2 meetings, 5 hours)

Learn techniques to create engaging, fun, and well-designed scientific posters (session 1) and oral (powerpoint/keynote) presentations (session 2). The course will include discussion of common pitfalls to avoid, good design principles, how to target your desired audience, and a group crit to gain optional feedback on your own poster or presentation files. BYO computer highly recommended.

Emily Beyda, BA, MFA candidate Emily Beyda is a graduate of the Global Liberal Studies Program at New York University where she studied literature and translation. An experienced traveler and teacher, Beyda has also worked in publishing. Romi Burks, PhD Dr. Burks is an Associate Professor of Biology at Southwestern University where she studies aquatic ecology, and she is a returning instructor at Art.Science.Gallery. A self-taught scholar of chocolate, she now teaches a multidisciplinary first-year seminar at SU on chocolate. She earned her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. Jedidiah Dore, MFA An award-winning illustrator, Jedidiah Dore is founder/owner of Ink & Sword art and design studio. He earned a BFA in drawing and communication design and an MFA in painting from the Pratt Institute and studied under artist Dave Passalacqua at the Passalacqua School of Drawing and Illustration. Clair Gaston, MFA Clair Gaston earned her MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Houston. She is an artist with a passion for nature and all things botanical. Hayley Gillespie, PhD An ecologist and artist, Dr. Gillespie is also the founder of Art.Science.Gallery.. She has a special interest in science communication and natural history and earned her PhD in ecology, evolution and animal behavior from the University of Texas at Austin.


Melissa Gillespie, BFA Melissa Gillespie is an artist from Fort Worth, TX. She earned her BFA from University of Texas at Arlington in papermaking and printmaking. Diane Kneeland, PhD Dr. Kneeland earned a PhD for her work in the photochemistry of cobalt complexes. She has taught general chemistry and been a career advisor for students in the Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin and enjoys coordinating outreach activities as a member of the American Chemical Society. Karen Lewis, PhD Dr. Lewis is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Texas State University in San Marcos. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and enjoys science outreach. Amanda Masino, PhD A geneticist and developmental biologist, Dr. Masino has been teaching human anatomy and physiology for over 10 years in college and university settings. She is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Huston-Tillotson University and earned her PhD in genetics & developmental biology from UT Southwestern. Sarah Morris, MA, MS A librarian and non-profit director, Sarah Morris has a decade of experience working as an educator and program coordinator in museums, libraries, schools, and higher education environments. In 2014, Morris co-founded Nucleus Learning Network. Emily Weerts A program manager who has developed and managed STEM-focused education courses and multi-disciplinary art based events, Emily Weerts co-founded the Nucleus Learning Network where she currently serves as the co-director.

Registration & Cancellation Policy | Payment is required in full the day you register. Class registration closes 48 hours prior to the course start time. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class if it does not make a minimum number of registrants. We will notify you 24 hours in advance should we have to cancel a course and we will provide a full refund. We will refund your registration, less a 25% cancellation fee, up to 15 days prior to your class. Please note that cancellations made with less than 15 days notice are nonrefundable. In the event you can no longer attend your class, registration may be transferred to a friend or family member free of charge. Can I pay weekly? | A weekly payment option is available for classes over $95, whereby your credit card will automatically be charged each week until the full amount is paid. Email laboratory@artsciencegallery.com to register using this option. How do I register? | Course registration can be completed online at artsciencegallery.com/labs or by phone at (512) 522-8278. Please contact laboratory@artsciencegallery.com with any questions. What should I bring? | Each course has different supply needs. Prior to the course or workshop, attendees will be informed by email what supplies, if any, they should bring. Who teaches your courses? | Because Art.Science.Gallery. is a multidisciplinary organization, our university-level instructors come from a variety of scholastic and professional backgrounds including arts, sciences, liberal arts, communications, and public affairs. Is there an age requirement for your classes? | Because our courses are taught at the freshman undergraduate level, students must be 16 years of age or older to participate in our courses, except with written permission from the instructor. How does a class differ from a workshop? | Workshops typically have 2-6 hour meetings that highlight a specific subject, technique or skill area. Courses are longer, exploring a broader subject over several weeks, and meetings are generally taught at the freshman undergraduate level. Both workshops and classes can take place in the gallery or in the field if a field trip or fieldwork lends itself to the class learning objectives. Any field trips or alternative locations will be mentioned in the course description.
