PAUL WRIGHT STUDIO THE PORTRAIT
A SMALL SELECTION OF PAUL WRIGHT PORTRAITURE
When Paul is chosen for commission, it is not for a facsimile, but for capturing that person and all that they are to their family, friends and colleagues. The human face is where Paul began and where he continues to return to throughout his career. The discovery of Self is his constant and evolving muse. It is Paul’s intention to interpret a moment in a person’s life, distilling what has brought them to this moment in time. Not a still, but a person amidst their constantly evolving motion. Showing this unseen in a person’s make up is never more relevant than in our Digital Age. Revealing the essence of the sitter is elusive in 2D. Portraiture can aim to avoid the highly
ltered examples of the still,
facsimile moment particularly evident in portraiture of the last 50 years. Instead we can draw upon an earlier history, interpreted through modern thinking and understanding of the signals used by the Old Masters. It can offer an expression from the very heart of the sitter. Lucian Freud said, he hoped that each of his paintings had three different expressions: three different things going on at once, not a single smiling face, but a more nuanced understanding of the mind, heart and motivations of the sitter. Painting this unseen is a unique collaboration, and allows us, the viewer, to see the sitter through the eyes of artist. Hopefully through this interpretation, showing them as they are known to the people whose lives they have touched along the way. Paul Wright clients are typically those who are both progressive and ambitious but who respect and carry
fi
forward their interpretation of traditional values in their daily professional and personal lives.
